West Lothian Pride is proud to invite the community to join us once again for our Pride March and Pride Village 2026 — a day dedicated to celebrating equality, inclusion, diversity, and community spirit right here in West Lothian.

This year Pride March will take place on Saturday 25th July from Livingston Designer Outlet to Reconnect Howden Park. The March will gather in the square by Cadbury at Livingston Designer Outlet from 11.30 with the March taking place from 12pm. Our Pride Village will return to Reconnect Howden Park also Saturday 25th July 2026 from 1pm, bringing together an exciting day of live entertainment, community stalls, local organisations, food vendors, activities, safe spaces, and celebrations for everyone to enjoy.

Following the Pride March through Livingston, Howden Park Centre will once again transform into the heart of Pride in West Lothian — filled with music, performances, drag acts, local singers,

community groups, charities, businesses, and activities for all ages. Whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally showing your support, Pride Village is a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

Pride Village is more than just an event — it is a celebration of visibility, acceptance, and community. It is a place where people can come together proudly, safely, and openly to celebrate who they are while supporting equality across West Lothian. Since the very first West Lothian Pride event in 2015, the community has continued to grow stronger year after year, showing just how important Pride is to so many people across our region.

VISITORS CAN EXPECT:

• Live music and performances

• Drag entertainment and local talent

• Community and charity stalls

• Food vendors and refreshments

• Family-friendly activities

• Information stands and support services

• Safe and welcoming spaces for connection and celebration

As a volunteer-led organisation, West Lothian Pride relies heavily on community support, donations, sponsorship, and volunteers to continue delivering free and accessible Pride events for everyone. By attending Pride Village, supporting our events, or getting involved, you are helping keep Pride alive and growing within West Lothian.

Together, let’s make Pride 2026 louder, prouder, and more inclusive than ever before.

At the HEART of the community

This year has been one of the most difficult years financially for West Lothian Pride as we continue working hard to deliver free, safe, and inclusive events for our community. Like many community organisations across the country, securing funding and sponsorship support has become increasingly challenging, with rising costs placing more pressure than ever on volunteer-led events and charities.

Despite these challenges, we have been incredibly

Let’s make Pride 2026 louder and prouder than ever before

fortunate to receive support from a number of amazing sponsors and partners whose generosity and belief in our community has helped make this year a success. Without their support, many of the events, activities, and opportunities we provide simply would not be possible.

We would like to give a huge thank you to all of our incredible sponsors and partners including Reconnect Theatres, Sky, Livingston Designer Outlet, CF Sound & Light, CORRA Foundation, Pride FM, Konect Magazines, LUSH, West Lothian Council, Red Hot Kitty, and all of our community partners and supporters who have stood beside us throughout the year. Their support

helps us continue celebrating diversity, equality, inclusion, and visibility across West Lothian.

As we now begin looking towards next year, we know it will likely be our toughest year yet financially. The reality is that organising Pride for the community comes with significant costs, and as a volunteer-led organisation we rely heavily on community support, sponsorship, fundraising, and donations to continue delivering these important events.

That is why we are asking our amazing community to continue supporting West Lothian Pride in any way you can. Whether that is attending events, volunteering your time, becoming a sponsor, making a donation, fundraising, or shopping for priderelated gifts and fun products at PROUDLY YOU our online store, every single bit of support genuinely helps us continue our work and build an even stronger Pride for the future.

Our events earlier this year, “Loud and Proud” at Reconnect Howden and our drag bingo afternoon in Bathgate, were sold-out. They were not only brilliant fun, but also a powerful reminder of the amazing support that exists within our community for Pride and everything it stands for. Seeing so many people come together to support West Lothian Pride shows just how important inclusive, welcoming, and safe community events are to so many people.

Together, we made this year great — now let’s make next year even better.

YOGA

FOR MOBILITY AND LONGEVITY

Monday mornings 9.45 from August, with Eva Paterson.

This new class has been developed with support for ‘not young’ bodies at its core. It will be at a pace and level for people who still hope to bring about change, preserving mobility and strength for as long as possible. Having taught many people older than herself, and having experienced a stroke at 42, Eva is very aware of the different challenges people have to navigate in life.

Eva offers a 10% discount for pensioners, and is extending a further 20% discount to Konect readers (full price £90), for a first block of 10 classes, for the new Monday class. Spaces are limited, must be booked in advance.

10% DISCOUNTfor pensioners,PLUS a further 20% DISCOUNTforreaders*Konect

Yoga involves a reasonable amount of work on the floor. The ability to get up and down, with chair support if necessary, is the base level of fitness required for participation. The 75 minute classes are made up of approximately 60 minutes of physical yoga (including warm up stretches) and 15 minutes of relaxation.

Eva has developed her yoga teaching style over 22 years. Now 50 years old, she qualified in her 20s with zero idea what the coming decades would bring. She now understands fully that some bodies are naturally strong and need support with flexibility, and others are naturally flexible and need support to build muscle, for longevity. Her yoga teaching focus is now an equal combination of both mobility and strength, as well as the all-important section in every yoga class - relaxation.

Care at home vs care home: How to choose the right support for your loved one

Spotting when an older loved one needs more support is rarely straightforward. Subtle changes - physical, emotional, or behavioural - can signal that they may no longer be coping as well as they once did.

When families notice that their loved ones forget to turn off appliances, often feeling disorientated and prone to falls, or feeling frustrated, anxious and slowly withdrawing themselves from their own family and friends – many consider, is it time to consider care at home, or would a care home offer the right level of support?

As a starting point, families would start by comparing the two options and here’s how care at Care UK homes would differ to having care at home:

Care at home

Time spent with each person can often be very limited, which means that your loved one may not receive such person centred care.

• When carers are instructed to cook meals, their nutritional knowledge and culinary skills may be limited.

• Although a carer may be able to support your loved one to get around their home, there are many hours left which are spent alone and if there is the risk of falling, they may need a live-in carer or another solution.

Care home

At Care UK there is no limit to the time we spend with residents, and we deliver care that’s personalised to your loved one’s needs, preferences and interests.

• At Care UK our chef-led kitchen teams provide delicious home-cooked meals throughout the day. Everything is tailored to your loved one’s needs and tastes, and the team provides tasty meals for residents who need a fortified, modified or specialist diet. Meal times at the home are all about enjoying food and spending time with friends in beautiful surroundings. We’re happy to prepare meals at any time. Snacks and drinks are always available too.

• We provide round-the-clock care and support whenever your loved one needs us - giving you and your loved one the ultimate peace of mind.

• Whilst care at home offers familiarity, flexibility and a sense of independence for your loved ones, we find that most families would eventually opt for long term, quality care at care homes as they prioritise long term stability and optimal mental and physical well being for their loved ones.

At Cairdean House care home, we offer care that’s truly personalised – from the moment your loved one moves in, they can hang their favourite pictures in their rooms and even chat to our Head Chef on how they want their favourite homemade dish to be cooked. Our recently refurbished home has a hair and beauty salon, café and cinema room, along with lovely gardens and outdoor terrace areas. Residents living in Care UK homes are offered a range of day trips and organised activities in their surrounding areas. These outings are a great chance for residents to get out and about and enjoy activities, exercise and a change of scenery.

Our experienced and dedicated activities team organises daily activities that are suited to all residents with different abilities and needs.

Residents can also enjoy outings to Stirling Castle, The National Wallace Monument, National Museum of Scotland, Mortonhall Garden Centre and many other locations across Edinburgh.

TOCCATA LADIES CHOIR

Toccata Ladies Choir has had another fantastic year, culminating in two brilliant concerts in May. "Toccata" is a musical term derived from Italian meaning to touch, and we hope always to touch the hearts of our audience.

The choir sang two Christmas concerts and then in February we returned to the Fife Music Festival, taking part in a wonderful evening of Choral singing, with fantastic feedback. Following that we went to Perth Music Festival entering and winning the Competitive Choral class, coming home with the Rose Bowl Trophy. The year was rounded off by our annual meal, which this year was at Top of the Tower Restaurant.

We have a break over the summer to allow for holidays etc and resume in August with Auditions and the AGM.

We will be looking for new choir members (18+) and will hold Auditions with our Musical Director, Claire Christie, in Carmondean, Livingston on Tuesday 18th August.

This is the venue we rehearse at every Tuesday evening.

For more information and to note your interest in auditioning please visit: www.toccataladieschoir.co.uk

THE BENEFITS OF DOING NOTHING !

I lead a busy, full on life as I’m sure many of you do too! Life has become that way with work, family commitments and pressures.

I’m currently preparing for a retreat I am running and the topic is “simplicity and spaciousness.” Pause right now and just have a moment to think about this in relation to your own life! How much space do you have and do you experience simplicity? These are good questions to ponder.

Joseph Jebelli in his book, “Why doing nothing can change your life” quotes, “Being busy has become a status symbol, a way of validating our own existence and self worth.”

His book is excellent! He says people don’t value resting, and that it is important to find balance between doing and being, effort and ease. I know in my own experience when I slow down I can feel guilty or bored, it takes

time for the nervous system to slow down.

Guilt manifests in thoughts of, “I need to do more”, “I’m not productive enough”! Can we see guilt as a mere story we are telling ourselves? We don’t have to believe the stories! Boredom, Jebelli says, is an opportunity to be creative and explore our potential.

Doing nothing is good for us! Our bodily systems can rest. Push through discomfort of doing nothing and see what happens, dare to be idle even! The key to flourishing, according to Jebelli, is actually to do nothing occasionally!

A West Lothian resident is embarking on a fundraising and awareness campaign in order to set up a local hedgehog rescue centre.

Hedgehogs in the UK are classified as vulnerable to extinction. In the past two decades, numbers have declined dramatically, due primarily to habitat destruction and traffic. West Lothian is no exception, with huge developments making life more and more difficult for hedgehogs. Without conservation intervention they are likely to become extinct in the UK.

Via her own volunteer hedgehog transport service, Danby Hogs, Eve Armour responds to calls from members of the public who have found a sick or injured hedgehog. She is able to carry out basic hedgehog first aid, and liaises with the hedgehog hospital in Fife, where she takes them for further care. She has now launched a fundraising campaign with a view to setting up a complete rescue centre here in West Lothian.

To kick off the Danby Hogs fundraising campaign, Eve is walking the whole 32 miles of the Union Canal from Falkirk to Edinburgh on 25th June.

“Hedgehogs often have to walk a long way to get food and shelter,” explains Eve. “I will complete the walk dressed as a hedgehog, and eating the same food as hedgehogs.” By which she means she will actually be eating worms and insects – human-safe ones!

Eve and her husband’s property in Blackridge will be the location for the rescue centre. “My goal is to create a safe, knowledgeable, and well-equipped facility where hedgehogs can receive the care they need before being released back into the wild. With the sponsored walk, I hope to raise £1000 to help

fund the essential start-up costs needed to begin rescuing and caring for hedgehogs.” This includes first aid and medical supplies, incubators, PPE to safely handle and care for wildlife, food and feeding supplies, rescue and transport equipment, and training to ensure the highest standard of care.

Eventually, the aim is to create purpose-built rehabilitation enclosures, pre-release pens to help hedgehogs regain natural behaviours before returning to the wild, as well as a range of specialist and medical facilities.

Eve will have completed her walk by the time Konect is distributed, but her fundraising page will still be open. Please search “Danby Hogs” at gofundme.com to make a donation.

HOW ELSE CAN YOU HELP HEDGEHOGS?

Eve says, “The good news is that helping hedgehogs doesn’t require anything complicated. Small changes like leaving gaps in fences, checking gardens before strimming or mowing, avoiding slug pellets, and providing food and water can make a huge difference. If enough people make those small changes, together they create a much safer West Lothian for hedgehogs.”

Turkey and Courgette Burgers

With BBQ season in full swing, these burgers are simple to make and a great alternative to a beef burger for something a little different. Alternatively, you could make the mixture into meatballs instead of burgers and serve with pasta and a tomato sauce!

Serves 2

Ingredients:

• ½ large courgette (grated)

• 250g 2% fat turkey mince

• 2 spring onions (diced)

• 1 tbsp. fresh herbs of choice (we used parsley and chives, but coriander or mint also work well)

• 1 garlic clove (crushed)

• 20g plain flour

Method:

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6.

2. After grating the courgette, try and squeeze out as much liquid as possible

using your hands then add the courgette to a mixing bowl.

3. Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and mix together well.

4. Using your hands, mould the mixture into burgers. You can either make two large patties or four small ones using these quantities.

5. Put the burgers onto a baking tray and place in the oven for around 20-25 minutes until cooked through. They can also be cooked on the BBQ.

6. Serve in wholemeal rolls or pitta breads with salad and homemade potato wedges!

JULY SUDOKU

This summer, one simple act of kindness could transform how a child feels walking into school.

As families across West Lothian begin to think about the new school term, for many children the excitement of starting fresh is overshadowed by worry. The cost of school uniforms and everyday essentials can be overwhelming, and for some families, simply having the basics isn’t guaranteed.

That’s where The School Bank West Lothian’s “Fill-A-Bag” initiative is making a real difference.

This summer, we are inviting individuals, families, workplaces and community groups to come together and take part in a simple but powerful act: fill a carrier bag with essential school items and help a child start the school year with confidence, dignity and a sense of belonging.

A Small Bag, A Big Impact

The idea is beautifully simple. Supporters are asked to fill a carrier bag with everyday essentials that many of us take for granted, but which can make a huge difference to a child preparing for school.

Brand new items needed include:

• Socks (black, grey or white – no knee-high styles)

• Tights (15 denier black for teenagers, or black/grey for primary-aged children)

• White polo shirts (5-13 years old)

• A reusable water bottle

• Toiletries such as shower gel, shampoo or conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant.

The children no longer felt embarrassed at school or when joining after school clubs. Their confidence soared. Before, they did not attend anything. The parents’ worries were eased about their child, and this helped build a positive, trusting relationship with the school.

Without these essentials, some children can feel different, excluded or unable to fully take part in school life. One local referrer shared the difference this support can make:

This is what a school clothing pack can do:

• It gives young people the confidence to attend school and take part

• It helps remove feelings of embarrassment or isolation

• It supports families, easing pressure and strengthening relationships with schools

Put simply, providing essential items doesn’t just meet a practical need - it opens the door to confidence, participation and belonging.

A Community Effort

One of the most inspiring aspects of the FillA-Bag initiative is how it brings the community together. Whether it’s:

• A workplace organising a team donation drive

• A family encouraging children to get involved

• A local group collecting items together

Every bag represents kindness, care and a shared commitment to supporting local children.

How to Get Involved

Taking part couldn’t be simpler:

• Pick up a carrier bag

• Fill it with the suggested items

• Drop it off at The School Bank West Lothian office in Livingston or at one of their red dropoff points across the area

You can find your nearest location here: schoolbank-westlothian.org/drop-off-points

With the summer holidays here, now is the perfect time to get involved and help ensure every local child starts the new school year feeling ready, included and supported. Because when a community comes together, even through something as simple as a filled bag, it creates something far bigger: opportunity, confidence and hope for our children and young people.

“I Have the Power” is probably one of the most famous lines of the sci fi–fantasy melting pot that is Masters of the Universe.

The original TV show and the film starring Dolph Lundgren are nothing short of iconic, despite being very much products of their time. It was only a matter of time before we received a full on reboot of the franchise. Travis Knight, one of the founders of Laika and director of Bumblebee, took on this task. The result is enjoyable, but mixed, to say the least. There’s a growing cynicism toward legacy properties, particularly their history and character names. Rather than being seen simply as products of their times, these elements are often used as vehicles for comedy, leading to moments that can only be described as cringeworthy and ashamed of the property they’re trying to adapt. This is disappointing, because when the film fully embraces its campiness, it becomes a lot of fun. When Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, it is nothing short of immaculate. The film also tackles themes of masculinity and staying true to who you are, which are wonderful to see in modern blockbuster storytelling. The cast is similarly mixed, with Nicholas Galitzine and Idris Elba standing out, while Alison Brie feels lacklustre and underutilised.

As family entertainment, you could do much worse than this. It’s not perfect, and I wish it were less silly at times, but does that matter when the kids in my screening clearly had a great time?

Images are a major factor in conveying the appeal of a property. Your property may be a home to you, but it has to be packaged like a product if it is to be marketed and sold effectively. Your estate agent will advise you on all these matters, and a good estate should always be trying to ‘get ahead of the game’ –that includes getting the right images together at the right time so that your marketing can happen when you want it to happen and to best effect at any time of year.

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your family is one of life's most exciting moments. From first cuddles and playful zoomies to discovering their unique personalities, every day brings something new.

But alongside all the fun comes an important responsibility – giving your newest family member the healthiest possible start in life. The first few months are some of the most important. Early veterinary care helps protect them frompreventable diseases, supports healthy development, and gives you the confidence that you're doing everything possible to keep them safe.

Vaccinations provide essential protection against serious illnesses and help pave the way for safe socialisation. Positive early experiences with people, places, sounds and other animals are vital for helping puppies and kittens grow into confident, happy companions.

Our health checks are also an opportunity to identify any congenital or hereditary conditions at the earliest possible stage. Spotting potential concerns early can make a significant difference to your pet's long-term health and wellbeing.

And because raising a puppy or kitten doesn't come with an instruction manual, our experienced team is always on hand with practical advice on training, behaviour, socialisation, nutrition and general puppy and kitten care. The habits and healthcare routines established during those early months can have a lasting impact for years to come. By choosing preventative care from the start, you're investing in a healthier, happier future for your pet.

The Vet's Tip is contributed by Roxanne Ferguson. Roxanne is Practice Director at Lamond Veterinary Clinic in Livingston.

At last we are in high Summer and days out and about are the order of the day (whatever the weather).

Our free art in the garden event runs during July and August when we install original works of art in our demonstration gardens. Come an explore the exhibition, treat yourself in the Orangery tearoom and be tempted by the goodies offered for sale in Scotland’s home of garden ornaments.

We wonder whether you and your garden would be delighted by a classical beauty or perhaps a hand painted classical portrait like this Medusa by artist Joanna Westwater shown at last year’s event. Joanna has installed another gallery of her hand painted images on recycled wood for this year’s event. You’ll be surprised by the range of her subjects, some very handsome and others cute and cheeky!

We are always delighted to discover creations by garden owners when we visit their gardens. It might be an attractive arrangement of stones, painted watering cans or living plants trained as topiary.

Dougal maintains that topiary is the ideal gardening activity for men: it only needs attention once a year unlike the lawn; when you’ve finished everyone tells you how clever you are; he usually manages to get help with the clearing up!

The Gardening Project is contributed by Dougal Philip, New Hopetoun Gardens. Inspiring, informing and entertaining, for more than 40 years.

Sponsorship of this event would not only sustain and enhance its delivery but would also allow us to allocate more of our resources to other areas of community need, extending the overall impact of our work. In the current climate, opportunities for positive social interaction and connection are more important than ever, and this event plays a vital role in bringing people together.

We achieve this by providing a diverse programme of daily activities that enable individuals to connect and build meaningful relationships. In addition, we deliver community events and day trips. We have a range of volunteering opportunities and provide signposting to appropriate support

Partnering with us also reflects a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility, demonstrating your organisation’s dedication to supporting and investing in the local community. A range of business sponsorship packages are available, please contact us for information.

Volunteering opportunities are available both on board and ashore. Whether assisting passengers during cruises, helping with boat operations, supporting fundraising activities, or providing administrative assistance, every volunteer plays an important role in creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for guests.

No previous boating experience is required, as full training and ongoing support are provided. Volunteering with Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho branch offers many personal benefits. Volunteers can develop new skills, gain valuable experience, meet new people, and become part of a friendly and supportive team. Many volunteers also find the role highly rewarding, knowing that their contribution helps provide opportunities and experiences that many passengers would otherwise be unable to enjoy.

By joining Seagull Trust Cruises, volunteers can help ensure that vulnerable and isolated individuals continue to enjoy access to safe, inclusive, and memorable days on Scotland’s waterways. A few hours of your time could make a lasting difference to someone else’s life while providing a rewarding and enjoyable experience for you.
