CHARITY OF THE MONTH

Edinburgh School Uniform Bank “It was one of those times when you think, ‘I’ll just help my friend out a bit with her project’ and before you know it you’re fully involved in running a very busy charity!” says Balerno resident Linda Russell.

The project was what is now the Edinburgh School Uniform Bank (ESUB). It started as one of Linda’s friends in Edinburgh keen to fill an increasing need for many kids not able to get new school uniform due to financial hardship. Going to school in the “wrong” clothes, children are vulnerable to bullying, social exclusion and low self esteem; the knock-on effects on their education are significant. I met Linda and her fellow volunteer Julia Grindley in Balerno to find out more.

“Families are referred to us by professionals such as head teachers or social workers.

They apply for a school pack which we then assemble from donated items, and we send it back to the referrer.” It sounds simple, but there is a huge amount of work and coordination involved.

“People are incredibly generous with their donations, and when all our living rooms started being taken over by uniform and other school equipment, we realised we had to get a premises!” says Julia. They were lucky to acquire the use of a room at Balerno High School to store, sort and pack everything.

SPONSOR A CHILD “Over the summer, we’re looking for supporters to sponsor a child. We give you the age and gender of the child in need, and you can donate a set of school uniform and equipment such as pencil case and stationery for her/ him.” The community was incredibly generous with the Sponsor a Child appeal last summer, and the ESUB are hoping for a good response this summer too.

Alternatively you can donate just an item or two – pick up a pack of polo shirts or a pair of trousers while you’re doing your shopping. Additional items such pencil cases, lunch bags and stationery are welcome too. All the shops will have their “Back to School” ranges in store this month before the holidays!

The local drop-off point for donations is: • Colinton Library,14 Thorburn Road, Edinburgh, EH13 0BQ There are many other drop-off locations throughout Edinburgh, so do spread the word.

“We prefer to use new clothes,” says Linda.

“We don’t want to hand out anything that is not in excellent condition. It’s about respecting the recipients.”

ESUB handed out over 300 packs of uniforms last year and this year demand is likely to be higher. “The number of @KonectDirectory

referrals has taken off exponentially in the past couple of years. Families experiencing financial hardship come from all walks of life. In particular, we get referrals from Women’s Shelters – sadly it is not unusual for a woman to have to flee domestic violence and leave her home with the children and nothing else. Imagine what it’s like for the children starting at a new school in a different area and not being able to have a decent set of appropriate uniform.”

SUMMER PACKING PARTY! Over the summer, Linda and Julia would like to host small Packing Parties where you are invited to get a few friends together and come to Balerno High School to spend an hour or two packing and blethering. There might even be home-baking! “We’re not asking for a regular commitment, but if you can manage a one-off during our busy time it would make a huge difference to how many we can get out to families in time for the new term,” says Linda.

LYNNE’S COLUMN

With Father’s Day on the horizon my thoughts have been turning to my Dad whose birthday was also in June. Despite being “older” when I was born (he was 46 when I arrived as the “surprise” third child), Dad never lacked energy and enthusiasm and had many ideas that were way ahead of his time.

A joiner to trade, Dad could turn his hand to anything cleaning chimneys, painting and decorating, mending TVs, building wardrobes, heeling shoes, making wooden toys. He had a vast knowledge of ancient Egypt, China, astronomy and wildlife, all gleaned from reading books and watching BBC documentaries (he hated ITV with a passion - all that advertising for things we didn’t need when so much of the world was in such poverty).

He had remedies for most common ailments – a Vick inhale for colds, a poultice of Epsom salts or glycerine, sugar and Lifebuoy soap for removing splinters or “spails” as we called them.

Dad also cared about the environment and championed recycling.

Nothing was wasted in our house – old newspapers and carboard were burned on the coal fire if they couldn’t be utilised elsewhere, an old fridge was completely stripped out and used as a store cupboard and every tiny piece of wood was put to good use as @KonectMagazines

firelighters or wedges for doors and windows.

On sunny days he’d insist we should wear hats to protect against sunburn and heatstroke - although being requested to wear an emergency hat fashioned hastily out of newspaper (but resembling a giant chip-poke!) was SO uncool for a 10-year-old out on an unexpectedly sunny hillwalk!

Our local park was Harrison Park but for a special treat we would pack some sandwiches, get on the number 10 bus and either go for a picnic in Spylaw Park and a paddle in the Dell or head for the hills, often with the Peter Powell stunt kite in tow - bought, allegedly, for me, although I remember doing little other than helping unravel the tail when it crashed to the ground and asking “Dad? When can I get a shot?”

Writing this piece made me realise something – that we build memories every day. Sometimes it’s obvious – milestones reached,

life-changing events, holidays etc. But it’s also the everyday, ordinary things that we remember when we look back at our lives and those of the people closest to us.

The little habits and quirks that make us who we are and remind us of happy times.

Whether or not you’ll be celebrating Father’s Day this June here’s to a month of reflecting on all that’s good about life and creating more happy memories to make us smile in years to come.

LOCAL WALK

IN THE

PENTLANDS Picture me if you can, standing on one leg which was slowly sinking into the mud, while trying to maintain my balance with my walking stick and attempting to get a stockinged foot back into the other waterlogged boot, embedded in cloying mud.

Suction effect had removed it from my foot as we attempted to walk across very sodden and marshy ground. This picture will give you some idea of the mile or so of open moorland between Bavelaw Mill Farm and Wester Bavelaw after a night of heavy rain. The ground was saturated and the very rough and indistinct path was deep with running water. Fortunately it wasn’t raining now, so we paddled on despite the bitterly cold wind.

Returning now to the start of our walk, which was the Threipmuir Car Park, we set off in the opposite direction to our normal route by heading back to the Marchbank Hotel and westwards along the North side of the Red Moss Nature Reserve towards East Rigg.

As we approached East Rigg we heard the unmistakable calling of a skein of greylag geese flying overhead. As we 16 | THE DELL

watched they all appeared to drop from the sky as if at a given signal to join at least a thousand of their kin already settled on a field between us and the Bavelaw Nature Reserve at the western end of Threipmuir Reservoir.

Never before had we seen so many together in all our years of tramping the hills.

Something had attracted them, perhaps the fresh green shoots of a cereal crop but from where we were it appeared to be just a green field. On reaching the end of the metalled road we turned off on the track to West Rigg and Bavelaw Mill Farm where in a field to our right we spotted a flock of at least forty whooper swans with their distinctive yellow bill patches.

Moments later we heard the sound of wing beats as another group of six flew in and landed about a hundred metres from the whoopers. We wondered

why, until we realised that the incoming flight were mute swans who didn’t fancy joining the others but still wanted to share in whatever was on offer.

Somehow we missed the ‘path’ which would take us to Wester Bavelaw and we came to a gate by the Mill Farm which appeared promising and, as it was in roughly the right direction, we took it and found ourselves in a waterlogged field. On the far side we were faced with a burn in full spate, while being watched by a flock of interested black-faced sheep. With no way to cross we turned back and splashed our way back to the farm where we met the farmer, ‘You lost?’ he asked. To our nods he continued, ‘you’re not the first and you won’t be the last’. He kindly directed us back to a gate that we had missed and an almost invisible bridge over the burn. Following @KonectDirectory

his directions we set off on the most waterlogged mile we had ever crossed and that brings us back to where this tale began.

It came as something of a relief to reach the incline leading up to Wester Bavelaw and even more so find ourselves on the metalled road beyond. Passing the signposted Red Road track to Nine Mile Burn we reached the avenue of beech trees leading down to

Threipmuir

Reservoir and our last port of call, the Robin Aitken Bird Hide at the Bavelaw Marsh Nature Reserve.

It had been an eventful walk; we had seen many things of interest, paddled a mile or so and couldn’t help wondering if a signpost just before the Mill Farm would save the farmer from being bothered by the like of us.

On returning home with sodden boots and socks I was asked , ‘Why didn’t you turn back?’ My reply was simple, ‘We don’t do turning back’.

Carolyn Thornton helps make wishes come true for children with life-threatening illnesses.

She lives in Craiglockhart with her husband George and son David.

It was as a result of experiencing a serious illness herself that Carolyn Thornton learned she loved – and had a knack for – fundraising.

After successfully pulling through Viral Encephalitis, Carolyn had a go at raising funds for Western General Hospital’s brain scan appeal. She pledged to raise £1,000, but in the end handed over £18,000.

Since then she has worked for Sick Kids’ Hospital and George Watson’s College, both in Edinburgh. For the past eight years she has been Regional Fundraising Manager for MakeA-Wish “It’s a fantastic charity,” says Carolyn.

“We grant wishes to children aged 3 to 17 with life-threatening conditions, where the average cost of a wish is £2,500.

Children with cancer, leukaemia, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, severe epilepsy, heart defects and other illnesses can be referred to MakeA-Wish. After the referral, two of the charity’s 600 active volunteers visit the family. They talk with the child and try to discern his or her “one true wish”.

“There are about 120 volunteers in the area I manage – Scotland and North East England,” says Carolyn, “and I could not do my job without them. Recently we granted a wish to a little girl who wanted to go to Centre Parcs with her family. And we were able to send them all for a five-day holiday. The girl loves Little Mix, so we gave her a rucsac with their picture on it. She also loves horse riding, which she will be able to do on the holiday.” @KonectMagazines

Wishes, like children, come in all shapes and sizes. One little boy’s wish was to wash an elephant in the zoo. Other children wish for a bedroom makeover, a trip to Disneyland Paris, special equipment such as a laptop, or the opportunity to meet their favourite celebrity.

One girl, who dreams of becoming a vet, did a mock operation on a stuffed dog at Braid Vets. She wore the appropriate uniform and a purple stethoscope to do surgery on the dog, which was normally used as a training prop.

Afterwards she was driven in a limo to the restaurant of her choice, Pizza Hut, along with a chocolate cake for dessert.

“This work is so rewarding,” says Carolyn.

“It’s for children, but it’s also for their whole family because they are so affected by the illness too. I’d love to hear from anyone who would like to help us through volunteering, fundraising or playing some part in helping us grant children’s wishes.

“We cannot add days to a child’s life but we can, with your help, add life to a child’s day.”

When we come across people - socially or at work - who seem egocentric, judgmental or unfeeling, it can be tempting to be equally harsh in our judgment of them.

We might pause to consider that these people are formed by their years of life thus far - just as we are. Perhaps they’ve never grown beyond the shallow world view which believes it’s satisfying to be ‘better’ than others. They probably completely believe in the ‘rightness’ of their own opinion. This is the domain of the ego and its striking features are lack of humility and an absence of gentleness to be able to truly feel for others.

In times when life feels difficult, one positive outcome might be that we can be shaped by our vulnerability in a way which increases our compassion for others. And of course, whilst we would never wish our times of suffering to last any longer than it seems they must, they can surely lead to a stretched heart with more awareness of how very much we have to be thankful for.

And these people who are painful to be around? Well, perhaps we can be true to ourselves and simply notice the sadness we feel around them. We might even try to be kind. And if that makes no difference? Well, where possible, we can just walk right around them and leave them to the battleground of their own egos.

a pain in the

neck “They’re a right pain in the neck” is an expression that most of us will be familiar with.

This colloquial expression dates from around 1900 and, according to a Thesaurus, is used to describe a “difficult or annoying person”, or “someone who causes trouble”. Those of us who have had neck pain will know that it, too, can be very annoying so what can be done to help?

Neck anatomy

There are 7 bones, called cervical vertebrae, which stack on top of each other to form our neck. These bones are held together by a network of ligaments and muscles and have small joints between them on each side called “facet joints”. These joints combine to allow us to move our head in any direction.

Between each vertebra there is a shock absorbing cushion known as an intervertebral disc.

What can go wrong?

Neck pain or a stiff neck is a common problem and rarely a sign of anything serious.

Causes often fall into three categories: Cervical spondylosis, whiplash or tension.

Spondylosis is the general term for neck pain caused by wear and tear over many years.

Whiplash injuries are seen after car accidents where the head is thrown either forwards or backwards suddenly stretching and damaging the ligaments, muscles and nerves around the neck. Neck pain can develop several hours or even a few days after whiplash. Tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders, which can be aggravated by stress, anxiety or by poor posture, can cause 22 | THE DELL

neck pain. Many desk workers are familiar with this type of neck pain.

What can help?

Exercises can be very useful in easing neck pain in that they can stretch tight tissues to ease stiffness, build up muscle strength and stamina to improve posture and help overall fitness. Physiotherapy can be extremely effective in helping people with any muscular or joint problem. In fact, research has shown that 80% of people who had physiotherapy for their musculoskeletal disorder were able to keep working and did not have to go off sick.

What would a Physiotherapist do for neck pain?

A Physio would assess your neck to identify the structures contributing to your pain and work with you to plan effective treatment.

This may include “hands on” mobilising techniques to improve individual facet joint movement, tailored exercises to improve your muscle strength, and to give specific advice about your workstation. We can also identify any serious problems and refer you on to your GP if necessary.

What to expect from a complimentary hearing assessment at The Edinburgh Hearing Practice First and foremost, we will listen to you. Hearing loss is personal and we take the time to listen to your experience. We recommend that you bring someone with you as they can often provide useful information and support. Our hearing assessments usually take about 90 minutes.

Most hearing centres will measure the quietest sounds that you can hear and based on this will make a recommendation. Although this type of hearing test provides useful information, by no means does it provide a full picture, we hear with our ears but it is our brain that understands speech! We take you through a thorough hearing evaluation using the very latest audiometric equipment to record the quietest sounds that you can hear, but also importantly, the way that your brain is able to understand the signal from your ears. This involves testing your speech recognition in both quiet and in the presence of the dreaded background noise. Where appropriate, we perform tympanometry to check how the middle ear is working (this is a really simple comfortable test, and is nothing to be nervous about).

At each stage, we will explain the results really thoroughly to you and make sure that everything is completely clear. Occasionally we may feel that onward referral is required – this is unusual, but you can trust us to always do the right thing. If hearing aids would help, we will discuss all the different solutions that are available to you based on your hearing loss, lifestyle, cosmetic preference and ease of use. Local Opportunities for Older People It can be hard to know what’s going on in your local area and how you can access the support and services you need.

This becomes especially difficult when our lives are changing, for example after a fall that knocks our confidence or after the death of a loved one.

Our Community Navigator and a team of friendly local volunteers will support you to find out what is on in your local area, and how you can access the support you need, in the way that you want.

Community Navigators provide regular Information Stations in the places that people are likely to be, such as shopping centres, libraries and supermarkets. Information Stations not only include a friendly face but also a wealth of knowledge about the local services, support, social groups and activities tailored for older people.

Look out for your local Information Station in Currie Library from 2-4pm on the last Tuesday of every month, we’d love to see you there!

We also publish two ‘Discover’ magazines in each locality, per year, providing information specific to each locality for those aged 65+. Look out for the next edition of Discover South West which is due to be published in June. You can pick up your copy from your local library or you can sign up to our mailing list to receive your copy directly to your door.

Coconut Seafood Curry

Full of flavour, this speedy curry is great for a summer supper.

Replace the asparagus tips with green beans or sugar snap peas, if liked.

Ingredients:

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 8 shallots, peeled and halved • 2-3 tbsp Thai green curry paste (see Tip) • 225g new potatoes, scrubbed and halved • 1 large carrot, peeled and thinly sliced • 400ml can reduced fat coconut milk • 150ml vegetable stock • 2tbsp light soy sauce • 450g cod fillet, skinned and cut into chunks • 175g fine asparagus tips • Juice from 1 lime • 200g cooked tiger prawns, thawed if frozen • 2tbsp freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Chopped red chilli and fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green curry paste and cook for 1 minute.

2. Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are almost tender.

3. Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further 6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and beginning to flake.

4. Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli and coriander leaves. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.

Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red chilli pepper with the shallots. @KonectDirectory
