he amount of behind-the-scenes work going on in the local voluntary sector, that I get to witness in my role as Konect editor, never ceases to amaze me. This month, I was blown away by my visit to the West Lothian Foodbank, in particular the extraordinary vegetable and fruit producing garden they have. Not satisfied with “just” providing canned and boxed emergency food and other essentials – already a massive operation – CEO Kathleen wanted to provide fresh produce too. See the article on pages 8-9. The volunteer sector in West Lothian is supported by the Voluntary Sector Gateway, which has an event coming up in September. There are many opportunities to help in the local community so if you are inspired to help, and to get out and about in the community for your own benefit too, check the article on page 26. As ever, feel free to get in touch to let me know what you think of the content, and I hope you enjoy Konect this month.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” This quote from Anne Frank is one of several on the walls of the West Lothian Foodbank headquarters in Bathgate. It captures one very real aspect of their work – when someone runs out of food, it’s an emergency that can be relieved with an immediate action that any of us can help with, such as popping in a food donation for the foodbank next time we’re shopping. I visited the Foodbank’s large premises in Bathgate to speak with CEO Kathleen Neilly and learn how this extraordinary operation works. “When I started working at the Foodbank in 2014, when someone received the benefits payment they were entitled to, most of the problems would be solved,” says Kathleen. “Now though, it doesn’t work like that. People are getting all the benefits they are entitled to but it’s not enough.” The West Lothian Foodbank has been in action for 14 years. In common with many others in the UK, it’s part of the Trussell Trust network and is an emergency service to help people through crisis - the majority of their clients need them only once or twice before

they get back on track. But those occasions make a huge difference. When you’re hungry, it’s impossible to think about anything else, and taking steps to get out of the situation becomes even more difficult. Adults struggle to make decisions, children can’t concentrate at school, and the long term implications are worse. For many people, the tipping point is a single event such as an unexpected bill, illness or a delayed payment. The Trussell Trust and Rowntree Foundation calculate that Universal Credit does not cover the basic essentials for living including rent, energy, food, toiletries and saving up for clothes. There are long delays in getting some benefits payments. In the past year (2025/26) the West Lothian Foodbank has supported over 6000 people with emergency food. “We make time for a cup of tea, treating people with dignity and connecting them to the wider support they need to address the underlying causes of their crisis,” explains Kathleen. “If someone is in a situation where they are needing
emergency food more than a couple of times, we follow up to find out what their challenges are and to sign-post to other services that will help with their long-term situation.” Nine distribution centres throughout West Lothian are served by the Foodbank’s large headquarters, warehouse and substantial vegetable garden in Bathgate, where food donations are divided into parcels for fivedays worth of emergency food for individuals and families. There are distribution centres in Whitburn, Broxburn, Armadale, Linlithgow, Bathgate, Boghall, Dedridge, Deans and Craigshill. Referrals for emergency food are made via various agencies including the Advice

Shop, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Social Work. At the warehouse, rows and rows of boxes, packets and cans of all sorts are stacked neatly, having been organised by volunteers who sort all incoming donations and make up standard parcels. These are then customised for the individual recipient as the referrals come in. Besides food, each emergency parcel that West Lothian Foodbank sends out includes soap and toilet paper (“I insist on this because I think that is just essential” says Kathleen) and other items as necessary including other toiletries and baby supplies. All dietary requirements are accommodated. “Our busiest time is January because when it’s cold and heating bills are higher, sometimes there is just not enough money for both heating and food. I always worry about the more mature people sitting at home wondering if
VOLUNTEER! - Gardening, sorting incoming donations, delivery driving, helping in the Whitburn charity shop – the Foodbank is a large operation which relies on volunteers. If you fancy working in the garden, the warehouse, charity shop or out on the road, there is a role for you. Visit the website at westlothian.foodbank. org.uk and follow the link to volunteer. DONATE FOOD! - Any donation, however small, makes a difference! Add one item to your next shop. They always need: tinned meat, tinned potatoes, tinned custard, tinned fruit, tea bags, hand soap and toilet paper. There are drop-off points in some supermarkets – check for the ones that are specifically for the West Lothian Foodbank. You can also drop off in Bathgate at the address below left. Please visit: westlothian.foodbank.org.uk/ support-us/donate-food for more details. MONETARY DONATIONS - With the cost of food constantly rising, food donations don’t always keep up with demand and the Foodbank has to purchase basic items on a regular basis. You can make a monetary donation via the website at westlothian.foodbank.org.uk and click on “£ DONATE”. LINLITHGOW BATHGATE | 9
they should heat or eat. I also worry about the mum who has a few jobs but gets a big energy bill through the door,” says Kathleen. Unique in Scotland in terms of the scale of the operation, West Lothian Foodbank has a substantial garden adjacent to the warehouse in Bathgate. It has 335 raised beds, three poly tunnels, 100 fruit trees and much more. “I just wanted to be able to give folk fresh food too,” explains Kathleen, “and when we moved to this premises five years ago we inherited with it a large, dirty yard. Putting two and two together, we took the plunge and had it cleared out and the ground prepared for food production.” Head gardener Clarissa is assisted by a team of volunteers to keep the food production flowing. It was bursting with colour and flavour when I visited in August, heading into the busiest harvest time. It has a seating areas and is fully wheelchair accessible, and so, more than a productive garden, it’s a lovely environment to bring a cup of tea and chat. “I love this time of year when you see people harvesting in the garden in the morning and produce goes straight into the food parcels and is with people that afternoon. It can’t get any fresher, with no air miles or chemicals.” The fresh produce going into the food parcels illustrates the above-and-beyond ethos at the West Lothian Foodbank, and the genuine care to give people the best possible support. While it’s not a longterm solution to poverty, it’s an excellent emergency service which relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors – see the side box for how you can help! “While there are still hungry people in our community, we will keep fighting on” Kathleen Neilly. LIVING WELL
Looking after your heart does not have to mean making big changes overnight. For older adults, small, steady habits can make a real difference to long-term wellbeing. As we age, our heart and circulation naturally change. Blood pressure may increase, stamina can fluctuate and everyday routines can become more important. The good news is that hearthealthy living can be simple and achievable. Gentle movement is a great place to start. A short walk, light stretching, seated exercises, swimming or an appropriate fitness class can help support circulation and strength. West Lothian has many accessible options, including local health walks, Xcite leisure facilities and community groups featured in Home Instead West Lothian’s What’s On Where Guide (homeinstead.co.uk/westlothian/whats-on-where). Food, hydration and medication routines also matter. Preparing balanced meals, drinking enough fluids and taking prescriptions

consistently all support better health. Regular GP appointments and preventative checks are important too, particularly if there are changes such as breathlessness, swollen ankles, persistent tiredness or reduced confidence when getting out and about. Heart health is not only physical. Stress, loneliness and lack of routine can affect wellbeing. Regular conversation, companionship and community connection can help people feel safer, calmer and more supported. For some older adults, a little extra help at home can make these habits easier to maintain. Home care can support meal preparation, medication reminders, gentle movement, appointments and companionship, helping people continue living independently while prioritising their heart health. Take one small step for your heart – and keep building from there. The Living Well column is contributed by Home Instead West Lothian. RECIPE & FOOD NOTES
These simple make-ahead desserts are made with seasonal fruit including apples and autumnfruiting raspberries, layered with a delicious coconut cream. Serves 2 Ingredients:
• 3 jazz apples, deseeded and chopped into pieces, plus extra slices to serve (optional) • 1 tsp of coconut oil • 1/2 tbsp of lemon juice • 1/2 tbsp of maple syrup (optional) • 125g frozen or fresh raspberries, plus extra for decoration
For the coconut cream:
• 1 x 400ml tin of full-fat coconut cream stored in the fridge overnight – please don’t skip this step • 1 tbsp of maple syrup • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Method:
1. Place the chopped apples, coconut oil, lemon juice and maple syrup (if using) into a pan with a dash of water. Cook the apples on a medium to low heat with the lid on for about 10-15 minutes or until they start to fall apart.
2. Add the raspberries and cook for another 5 minutes. You can either use the compote as it is or, if you like it smoother, you can blend it up using a hand blender. 3. While the compote is cooling down, make the coconut cream. 4. Remove the tinned coconut milk from the fridge and scoop out the thick part, which should sit on top. Don’t use any of the watery part, otherwise the cream will turn out too runny (you can save it for smoothies or curries). 5. With a hand whisk, start to whisk the cream before adding in the maple syrup and vanilla extract. Whip until you have a super creamy and smooth consistency, almost like whipped cream! 6. When the fruit compote is completely cold, assemble some jars/glasses with half the compote and half the coconut cream. Serve with some fresh raspberries and some sliced apples, if liked.

Inside
Outdoors
For years, we’ve associated garden buildings with home offices. But an outdoors room can be an inviting, year-round retreat where wellbeing, relaxation and connection to nature come first. The possibilities are extensive, from Pilates or yoga studios and home gyms to reading retreats and calm relaxation areas for meditation and mindfulness, fitted with soft seating and low lighting. Even easier is a timber deck for yoga or a hanging chair in a hidden spot.
IMAGE CREDIT: Garden rooms from Urban Pods, www.urbanpods.co.uk
SAUNAS, TUBS AND MORE Traditional acrylic hot tubs are popular, but there’s an increasing market for designs that integrate more naturally into the landscape. They may be clad in timber, sunken into the ground or even made from a rugged, natural material such as cedar or stone. Saunas are another fastgrowing sector and even in a small plot, you can fit a compact, barrel-shaped design for one or two people.
20 | BATHGATE
It’s also relatively easy to complement a sauna with a cold-water plunge pool.
A quirky option is an outdoor bath, perhaps a traditional roll-top type, which could be plumbed in or placed within reach of a hose. LIGHTING
Good, functional lighting is essential. Aim for warm bulbs set at a low level and try to choose organic materials and shapes for the fittings. Hang string lights through tree branches for a pretty glow. WATER FEATURES
A gently bubbling water feature can be a soothing addition to a garden spa. Alternatively, simply add a wall-mounted or free-standing fountain, provided you can connect it to a power supply.
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Use hedging or tall plants to create a natural screen, or add trellis or slatted-timber screens in appropriate places. Hide a hot tub, plunge pool or bath beneath a pergola and plant climbers if you are overlooked. Check whether you will need planning permission for large structures or major landscaping and always involve a qualified electrician where electricity is concerned. Small touches make a big difference: add a hook or two near a hot tub for robes or towels, and a table near a relaxation area for books or a glass of water. Wouldn’t you just love a carpet of these colourful Oriental Hellebores in your border in late winter? They are so easy to grow and their bold evergreen leaves, sometimes with lovely markings, look very stylish all year round. Many plant breeders have been producing mind blowing selections of these exotic hardy perennials. They all have Helleborus Orientalis as one of their parents and then a range of other varieties to pollinate them, producing the different plants on offer now. Hellebores are a bit promiscuous and you will find lovely young seedlings around your plants, but they may have different coloured flowers from your original plant if there are different hellebores nearby to pollinate your plant. Buying a plant in flower during the winter may seem expensive but they are very long lived and well worth the initial outlay. You may
Hellebore (close up) choose to keep your new plant where you can see everyday and enjoy it in flower, then planting it in its permanent home in the spring.
September is a good month to be planning any changes to your garden for next year and also starting to make those changes before the winter weather descends on us. You may want to wait a couple of months so you see the flowers on Oriental Hellebores, and decide which ones you like the best, but preparations for their new home can start right now! LIFE COACHING
CASUAL Connections
Every day gives us opportunities to form connections with other people, whether that’s nodding at a neighbour or a casual chat at the newsagent’s. These may seem like unimportant and undramatic exchanges but each of them bring something into our lives. Not every relationship has to be deep to be significant, sometimes those low stakes interactions that are undemanding and don’t require too much from us are just what we need in our lives. The power of casual connections, the ones that hinge on that regular pub quiz night or the shared chat at the allotment have real power in our lives. It’s the kind of camaraderie that doesn’t require us to dress up and is made up conversation and cups of tea that stretch out for longer than we intended. Although these interactions can be considered
to be ‘casual connections’ that doesn’t mean that they have no impact. Relationships with colleagues, neighbours and those friendly faces at the shops play a special role in social cohesion bringing comfort and visibility to us all. So, if you have been waiting to feel more connected, maybe the answer isn’t finding another deep connection or soul mate. Maybe it’s going along to a community event or a weekly walk. Creating a bit more space for the people around us and smiling at that neighbour we see every day as we head to our car, might be the first step in a whole new way of being and might be enough to change our lives forever. The Life Coaching column is contributed by Francine Orr, NLP coach, hypnotherapist & reiki practitioner. Francine is based within Linlithgow Chiropractic on Wednesday afternoons and is also available online. See www.orrganise.co.uk

Matt Johnson’s second film of 2026 is stylistically different from his previous non mockumentary feature, BlackBerry. However, Tony carries the same charm and affection that runs through all of Johnson’s work. Set in the summer of 1975, the film follows Anthony Bourdain as he begins as a narcissistic writer and gradually discovers his love of cooking. Notably, it compresses what would have been years of his life into a single summer; despite this, the film still feels entirely authentic. Similar to the authenticity of great food. Tony shows that it doesn’t matter whether it comes from a tiny food shop or a Michelin-star restaurant; food unites us and brings us joy. Dominic Sessa is incredible as a young Anthony Bourdain; despite constantly lying to keep his head above water, he never comes across as a bad or sinister person. Instead, he feels like someone with the potential for brilliance who simply needs to be knocked down a few pegs to become the man he would later be. Antonio Banderas is, as always, excellent as Chef, a mysterious figure who becomes the guiding force that helps Bourdain fall in love with cooking. The supporting cast is also strong, and the humour feels straight out of other Matt Johnson films despite this being one of four writers. Tony is a great biopic that, while it may not reinvent the wheel, offers a vivid glimpse into the life of one of the most famous celebrity chefs to have ever lived. In Cinemas Now The Film Review is contributed by Robert Ewing. Robert is passionate about film as an art form, and shining a light on films that may not be on people’s radar. The West Lothian History and Amenity Society starts its 2026-27 season with a talk by the well-known Geoff Bailey, formerly Falkirk’s archaeologist and museums officer. His subject will be Arthur’s O’on (oven), one of the most complete Roman structures in Britain, that stood near Stenhousemuir – stood until the Vandals of the day demolished it. Hear the whole extraordinary story, at Ecclesmachan Village Hall on Wed 16th Sep at 7.30pm. Why not come along and try us – we’re a friendly society, and if you’re not yet a member, just put a donation in the jar on the night. As extra incentive, it’s a good evening to try us out, since the first meeting of the session is followed by tea, coffee and home baking! The Society meets on the third Wednesday evening of the month at 7.30pm, and offers
seven talks in the course of the year – see below for the syllabus. We’re always glad to see new faces and if you like what you see, you can join the society for £20, which works out at less than £3 per evening. Interesting talks on a wide variety of topics – last year we covered from Bo’ness whaling to James VI and witchcraft, to Scotland beneath the surface. Each talk is by an expert in their field, plus the occasional organised visit to a place of interest. We meet at a number of venues throughout West Lothian – see the details below. You can join at any meeting, or by emailing us at info@wlhaas.org.uk

RATHO DRY DOCK
SOLUTION TO AUGUST As the Union Canal’s summerCROSSWORD cruising season nears its end, Seagull Trust Cruises is reminding boat owners, clubs and charities that its fully enclosed dry dock at Ratho is available for their own use when it is not being used by the charity’s own fleet. The dry dock, the only facility of its kind on the Union Canal, sits at the charity’s Baird Road base and provides a roofed, protected environment ideal for autumn and winter maintenance. With the main cruising season finishing at the end of October, boat owners are encouraged to book early to secure a slot before Seagull Trust’s three passenger boats enter the dock for their annual overhaul. The dock is made available from Saturday to Saturday for other canal charities, boat clubs and private owners.
