Our local history feature this month looks at “The Killing Time� - a somewhat gloomy subject but important events during this period took place in and near the Pentland Hills and it's interesting to ponder, whilst enjoying our beautiful and peaceful hills today, that they have in the past been the scene of momentous conflict.

"The Killing Time"

November 1684: The Kirk of Calder in Mid Calder is the scene of a military enquiry into the circumstances of the death of two of His Majesty's Life Guards, who were murdered at a place called Swyne Abbey near Livingston on the 20th November 1684.

Every parishioner in Mid Calder was bought into the Kirk for interrogation regarding the circumstances of the deaths of the two Guards, whose names were Thomas Kennoway and Duncan Stewart … but the villagers revealed nothing and the perpetrators of the crime were never found. The enquiry was called by His Majesty’s (James II's) commanding officer, was held under the Lords Livingston, Ross & Torphichen.

What was the background to this extraordinary event?

Kennoway had become notorious in the village of Mid Calder for seizing an old man who, he alleged, was a rebellious Covenanter and had him “beaten and bound in a most barbarous manner,” as it was said in the annals of the times.

The Covenanters - such as the old man allegedly attacked in Mid Calder - were Presbyterians who were seeking to protect their faith in the face of the Episcopal Church of England that the Stuart kings were trying to impose on Scotland. They had drawn up the “National Covenant of Scotland,” (signed in Greyfriars Kirk in 1638) hence the label “Covenanters.” The Episcopal Church of England had the king at its head and then a hierarchy of archbishops, bishops and so on. They ruled under what they called the “Divine Right of Kings.” The Scottish Presbyterians, however, did not think that a king should be at the head of a church, and stood against them.

This stand against the imposed English church resulted in tremendous cruelty, torture, imprisonment and deportation over the period while the Stuarts were in power, a timeline of approximately 50 years. The era is known as the “The Killing Time” in Scotland and lasted from 1625 until 1688 through the reigns of Charles 1, Charles II and James II with an intervening period of respite of 21 years when Cromwell was Lord Protector of England. The National of Covenant of Scotland, besides protecting their faith, actually swore fealty of the Covenanters to their king. But this didn’t make any difference and they suffered greatly under the Stuart kings for the right to worship with God as the head of their church.

Returning to the Mid Calder incident - a few people went into Edinburgh to complain to General Dalzell of The Binns (near Philpstoun) about the cruelty shown to the old man. In reply Dalzell, who was one of the king’s men, made the old man sign a paper on pain of death that Thomas Kennoway had never wronged or harmed him in any way. This infamous General Tam Dalzell, who became know as “Bluidy Tam” had been the leader of the kings troops at the famous Battle of Rullion Green 18 years earlier, so this reaction is unsurprising.

The Covenanters held their secret prayer meetings throughout the “Killing Time” at remote sites known as Conventicles. The Cauldstane Slap in the Pentlands just off the Lang Whang was one such site, and records from 1684 tell of gatherings of

between two and three hundred people near the Slap, some armed with swords and pistols. There were many sites in the Border country too.

There is still a conventicle held once a year near Durisdeer (Dumfries and Galloway) on the Duke of Buccleuch’s estate. It is an open air prayer meeting held up in the hills on the site of a ruined kirk and an old graveyard where many of the Covenanters were buried. The people gather annually to remember the sacrifice that they made.

It wasn’t until 1688 that the Scots were allowed to worship in their own way. Under all of this tremendous pressure brought about the by Crown, the Covenanters refused to give up their rights and they should still be respected for their bravery and sacrifice for what they believed in.

Battle of Rullion Green, Pentland Hills The site of Rullion Green is in the Pentlands near Glencourse. The Battle here in 1666 was a showdown in the attempt by the Covenanters to earn their religious freedom.

A troop of around 3000 Convenanters - a mixture of professional soldiers and ordinary citizens - assembled from Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire heading for Edinburgh to present a petition to Parliament.

Many of their number deserted however, disheartened, leaving only around 900 by the time they got as far as Colinton.

Their leader decided to call a parade and review at Rullion Green in the Pentlands. General Tam Dalzell, commander of the Kings troops, was in Currie at the time with a force of around 3000, and decided to cut straight through the hills and confront the Covenanters.

The Covenanters were vastly outnumbered and roundly defeated, the survivors allegedly treated very cruelly. There is a monument commemorating Rullion Green near the Dreghorn Barracks at Colinton.

Currie Parish Horticultural and Industrial Society The 16th Currie Show is on Saturday 30th August at Balerno High School.

A quintessential village show, the aim is to promote and celebrate gardening and crafts in all their variety. It doesn't require the same level of horticultural expertise as a major show. Local Walk

A walk to brunch

Karen Murray finds that a promise of food makes for a more harmonious walk A walk in the area of the Harlaw Reservoir is always a popular one in our household at any time of year as it can be fairly short – the kids not partial to a long walk if they can possibly get away with it – but more than that, there is much of interest to be found along the way so a simple walk ends up taking much more time as dens are made in trees and undergrowth, stiles are climbed, water is paddled in, frogs are found etc.

I have described the basic walk around the Harlaw Reservoir before and other walks that begin here, as the Visitor Centre is the hub for a myriad tracks heading off over the Pentlands.

The difference this time is that when we headed to the Visitor Centre to begin our walk, we discovered something new – Vanilla Pod. This is a pop-up kiosk that sells fabulous crepes as well as other yummy delights.

Now if you can use the ‘carrot’ to encourage walking with my lot, then you will get a whole lot further. Promise of a chocolate crepe and cold drink for Sunday brunch was sure to get them going. As hubby and I were equally keen on a double espresso and accompanying breakfast crepe, we kept the walk to the basic loop around the reservoir – including of course some stone skimming at the water’s edge.

However as I said there are several variations on the walk and additions of the basic route that means you can head up to Harlaw for a quick stroll, or a whole day hike. A particularly good option, once parked in the main car park, is to head to the visitor centre and begin by turning right immediately crossing the dam with Harlaw Reservoir on your left. Once over the dam turn left to follow the broad, well-made path parallel to the water.

The path here is pretty straight, divided from the reservoir by woodland on the left and you can follow rough paths through the woodland rather than the main path – guess which route my kids opt for? At the far end of the reservoir cross the footbridge over the feed channel. The earth dam of Threipmuir Reservoir is dead ahead and you can opt to turn right and follow the path alongside this reservoir up to another car park and into the Red Moss nature reserve, then retrace your steps and continue around Harlaw reservoir back to the start.

Alternatively you can head left and walk along the earth dam before going right at the side of the Threipmuir reservoir, crossing a short stretch of boggy ground and hitting the woods once more, keeping the water close by on your right.

The woods are eventually left behind and the path improves as it continues by the water. There is a causeway across the reservoir, then you follow the path as it curves left to head through a gate then uphill into the trees. At another gate, pass through it then dogleg right to the next gate. After a final gate, you will see signpost in the wall enclosing Harlaw Reservoir.

Cross the stile then follow the path to the right back to the visitor centre.

Now you can enjoy a well-earned treat from Vanilla Pod. Family run, this upmarket kiosk has been a long time in the planning but eventually all the hurdles were jumped and the kiosk could open. Situated outside the Visitor Centre it is in a perfect location and once you have had one of their sweet or savoury crepes, you are sure to be back for more. The coffee is excellent and there are different lunch options each day from delicious soups,

to curry or sandwiches, cakes and pastries. The owners are very keen on making the enterprise as sustainable as possible down to the recyclable coffee cups, spoons and napkins. The ethos of the Vanilla Pod is to harmonise food with the environment, say the owners. Where possible food will be seasonal and locally sourced, nutritional and tasty. According to my hungry lot, it was just that.

Ratho Community Centre Cafe A hidden gem

I love cafes in all their variety, and believe there is a cafe for every occasion. I like to check out the best places locally to get a good Italian coffee. So I was delighted when I finally got round to tasting the wares at the Ratho Community Centre cafe, to find that it is an absolute hidden gem. If you've not already been there for a coffee and cake, or a lunchtime soup, make it your next meet up point.

interest and hobbies. People love their special cakes and each one is a labour of love on Andrew's part. “I find it very relaxing to spend time on the tiny details of the cake decorations,” he says. You can see pictures of cakes he has made to date on his website at www.acakeforalloccasions.co.uk

The cafe is run by Andrew, who has a Dutch accent with a Scottish lilt. Andrew grew up in central Amsterdam near the famous Vondelpark, with bikes and canals. Dutch education at the time meant that you had to choose a specialist subject at age 14, and Andrew chose to go to cookery school. Leaving school at age 17, he had some months to kill before national service so he worked in a bakery for six months. He was hooked!

During national service he trained as a UN peacekeeper and although never deployed, the skills he learned there got him into security work.

After 15 years of security at five star Amsterdam hotels, he met his Scottish wife who was working in Holland at the time, and in 2004 he decided to move to Scotland. For work in his new country, Andrew turned to his love of cooking and baking.

Despite his cookery training he had never worked in a professional kitchen, but while working for a call centre he applied for and got a restaurant job in Edinburgh. From there he went on to the RBS executive kitchen, catering for the senior staff and corporate hospitality functions.

By the time he was made redundant from RBS in 2012 he was a parent and involved in the Ratho school and community. As a family-oriented person he wanted something that would fit around his family life in Ratho. Setting up the cafe was the perfect solution, and nearly 18 months on it's going from strength to strength. He loves being a pastry chef, and besides running the cafe he has developed a side-line in celebration cakes. Lucy Mitchell: Why I’m committed to Muir Wood Park

Lucy Mitchell grew up in Currie, and moved into town when she was 23, not expecting to move back. However, when she and her husband started looking for a family home, it was Currie that eventually got their vote!

Occupational therapist Lucy, husband Steve, and their first child Mairi (14) settled in the village in 2002. A few years later, when Erin (8) was on the way, Lucy joined the Friends of Muir Wood Park (FMP). This group was started by local resident Margo Arnott, with the purpose of caring for and developing the park.

“I grew up in Currie, and our house backed up onto Muir Wood Park,” Lucy comments. “So I guess it was partly for sentimental reasons that I wanted to support the committee. I remember spending all day in the park as a child, and I wanted my children to have that experience too.”

Lucy has served as Membership Secretary, Treasurer and Vice Chair for FMP and has seen a lot of improvements in the park during the seven years that she and Steve have been involved.

These have included a new hardcore path; the addition of bird, bat and owl boxes; new fencing; and a better football pitch, complete with artificial turf.

the plants and trees. “This encouraged a sense of responsibility and ‘ownership’ in the kids,” she says. Several years ago Lucy received a phone call from the P5/P6 friends of her daughter Mairi, who asked, “What should we do? We’ve seen broken glass at the park!”

“I think this sense of ownership makes it less likely that the park will be vandalised,” comments Lucy. She says that vandalism is rare, although there were a couple of incidents in early July. Muir Wood Park received the “Keep Scotland Beautiful” award in 2006, and the Green Flag award in 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Although Lucy is no longer an officer on the FMP committee, due to family and work commitments, her involvement over the years has had a lasting effect on her children. Mairi still attends the meetings of the FMP and is interested in pursuing a career related to caring for the environment.

And Erin? With a laugh Lucy says, “Well, I think Erin would live in the park if we let her!”

The hard work of the FMP, and local volunteers, has resulted in the planting of bulbs each spring and a general tidy-up and litter collection each autumn. FMP meets quarterly, and normally a member of the Council, who has worked extensively with the group, is present. Meetings are held at Nether Currie School. “This made it easy for the head teacher to attend, and improved our community links,” Lucy explains.

“Nether Currie, which is an eco-school, has been our partner in caring for and developing Muir Wood Park. “ Lucy describes how she regularly took P4 classes and their teachers around the park, acquainting them with what it had to offer, and identifying

New Individual Savings Accounts (NISA) Part 2

In a previous edition of Konect we outlined the changes to the old ISAs and the rules and benefits of the New Individual Savings Account ( NISA).

We have been inundated with enquiries regarding this and hence either our article was not as self-explanatory as we had hoped or people are genuinely confused on the change from the old ISAs to the new NISA on 1st July 2014. In view of this we felt it would be useful to reiterate the main points of the new NISAs.

What are they?

The new ISAs have simply replaced the existing ISAs.

Any existing ISA will be automatically converted to the new ISA and the limit in any one tax year has been increased to ÂŁ15,000.You can put all of it into cash or all into investments or any combination of the two.

Other changes

You will now be able to transfer money from what was a cash ISA to an investment ISA or move money from an investment ISA to a cash ISA with no restrictions. The advantage of a cash NISA is the interest earned is paid gross even if you are a higher tax payer. The advantage of the investment NISA is there is no Capital Gains Tax to be paid.

Disadvantages

As mentioned previously, they belong to an individual so when the individual dies the value of the NISA will be added to their estate and could be taxed at 40%.

The good news is the government now permits AIM shares to be put into a NISA. The benefit of AIM shares is they are exempt from IHT after being held for 2 years. AIM shares are considered riskier than ordinary shares and hence professional advice should be sought.

Becoming a Good Food Nation

In June this year the Scottish Government published a consultation document “Becoming a Good Food Nation. Recipe for Success: Scotland’s Food and drink Policy”* You might think this has little to do with ordinary folk, but in fact it's a very important document for everyone in Scotland today and for the population of the future. The plan is to change the whole way we all think about and react to our food. The Government want us to be fit, well and eating in a better way in 12 years’ time. Radical stuff and an amazing ambition for us all.

The hope is that “the most intractable dietaryrelated diseases will have begun to decline by 2025, and people from every walk of life will take pride and pleasure in the food served day by day in Scotland. An increase in Scottish food exports will attract overseas visitors and the quality of the food we serve will become one of the key reasons to travel to Scotland. Everyone will know what constitutes good food and why. All players in Scottish life – from schools to hospitals, retailers, restaurants and food manufacturers – will be committed to serving such food” Some points from the document are : •

The proportion of adults in Scotland that are overweight or obese is 64% and rising.

Scotland has the fifth highest prevalence of obesity compared to other countries worldwide Fruit and vegetables consumption in the poorest 20% has fallen by 20% since the recession.

Diet-related disease contributes substantially to healthcare costs in Scotland.

Nevertheless, many people of all ages in Scotland remain profoundly unaware of how and where the food they eat – and its ingredients – are produced.”

“I was profoundly depressed on a plane returning to Edinburgh recently.

There were good food deli packs, meal deals and low calorie sandwiches on offer BUT the Kid’s Pack consisted entirely of highly processed food with special treats of sweets and chocolate spread with a fizzy drink!”

Try to read what is planned, and if you have strong views tell the Government what you think should happen.

In our area schools are helping children to eat better and breakfast clubs give many young pupils a good start to their learning day.

Allotment holders grow food and involve their kids in understanding where food originates. Still there is much, much more we can do for ourselves. Food is the fuel for life and preparing, cooking, sharing and eating it is a cultural event every day of our lives.

We need to consider what we buy and how much we eat.

Processed food forms the bulk of most people’s diet, but this can change. If we cook we know what we are giving our family and we are in greater control of the quality of our diet. In the long run it is cheaper to cook, even when you take account of fuel costs. It need not take much more time to prepare a family meal especially if weekly shopping is planned with this in mind. Uncooked ingredients keep better than ready meals and leftovers are often the base for soup or a casserole later.

If you learn good eating and exercising habits from birth you are more likely to keep fit and well the rest of your life. I was profoundly depressed on a plane returning to Edinburgh recently. August is a good time to eat well. There is an abundance of fruit, veg and fish in season.

Salmon steaks with a green sauce 1 packet watercress and spinach leaves Small onion finely chopped Lemon juice Olive oil, pepper, 1 salmon steak per person Heat a little oil and cook the onion till pale and soft Add the leaves and cook all together till wilted.

Add a little water and lemon juice and wiz with a hand blender or liquidizer. Keep warm.

Either bake in a hot oven or grill the fish, turning once.

Add any fish juices to the sauce and reheat.

Serve with small new potatoes and perhaps a tomato, cucumber and olive salad.

Poached peaches, nectarines, apricots or plums Either cook one type of fruit or a mixture as you prefer.

Wash the fruit.

Cut each fruit in half and remove the stone.

With nut crackers crack the stones and put the kernels in the pan with the fruit.

Add about 2 pudding spoonfuls of sugar and a very little water (just to prevent burning).

Bring slowly to the boil.

Turn the fruit to make sure it cooks evenly.

Serve cooling or cold with plain yoghurt.

For an indulgence have a shortbread or ginger biscuit.

Any leftovers could go as the base of an up-sidedown cake.

Art In The Park Colinton

Art in the Park is the highlight of historic Colinton Village’s events calendar, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever, boasting a fantastic range of entertainments including a wonderful array of art/craft stalls, live performances, old fashioned games, fun activities for children and adults at our Kidzone, and a hugely popular dog show.

Whether your dog is a pup or in their prime, drooly, scruffy, waggy, or just downright smart, there’s a category for everyone, including, of course, ‘Dog with the Most Fabulous Hat’.

Stallholders are gearing up and busily crafting a range of offerings from original artwork and photography to hand-made jewellery, woodcraft, artisan food and more. The Art in the Park stage will feature a lively mixture of dance and music, including belly, ballet and Zumba dance; and choral and folk music.

There are a number of new additions to the programme this year. Lorraine O’Shea, Chair of CVE Group said: “We are excited to announce that this year’s event is hat themed, and we’re asking everyone who fancies themselves in a hat to come hatted up. At 3pm the ‘Hats in the Park’ parade will see fantastic prizes awarded to those sporting the most seriously impressive headgear!”

A giant piñata will further add to this year’s spectacle. Lorraine said: “Come and help us decorate a giant papier mâché donkey that we’ve commissioned specially for the event. It’s going to make a stunning community art centrepiece – though not for long! At 3pm the donkey will be ceremoniously hoisted in the centre of the park and children can take turns giving it a bash to break it apart and release the goodies inside.”

Elizabeth Strain, CVE Committee member has been organising the Food Hub. She said: “Enjoy lunch out - grab a burger from MacKenzies or pasta and pizza from Dantes.

Alplings, new this year, will offer vegetarian dumplings and apple strudel. There will be speciality coffees for that all-important caffeine boost from Cafe2u, as well as candy floss for that sugar rush! And don’t forget the ice-cream van!”

In response to popular demand, the family dog show, Bark in the Park, has some additional categories.

There’s also a doggy triathlon, and dog agility heats for athletic types, and opportunities for dogs wanting to try their paw at agility for the first time. Registration for the show categories opens at 11, so make sure you come and sign up as soon as you arrive!

Art in the Park takes place in Colinton Village’s Spylaw Park on Sunday 31st August - or the following Sunday September 7th if bad weather forces a postponement.

The fun and festivities kick off at 11am, and run all day until 5pm. Spylaw Park is situated on the banks of the Water of Leith, providing a gateway to a network of wonderful woodland walks – perfect for an idyllic stroll when you need a break from all the excitement!

Art44 Open Studios Day - 9th August 2014 ART44 is a collective of practising artists whose individual studios are linked by the nearby Water of Leith and the 44 bus route connecting the three villages – Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno.

The group is hosting an Open Studio Day on Saturday 9th August 2014. There are six artists in this group, within five studio locations, practising across a wide range of media and craft disciplines.

Each of the artists’ studios will be open between 10 am and 4 pm. A visit will allow a unique chance to see their work and also talk to the artist and gain an understanding of their thinking and process.

There is also an opportunity to purchase their artwork at affordable studio prices.

Back to School

School uniform shopping August, and it’s back to school time. And every August we’re reminded of the brutal truth that children grow.

Besides uniform of course there is also the new stationery, bag, calculator, ring binders and all the other bits and pieces that seem to need replacing every time they go back to school.

But as a society we're becoming more and more conscious of waste and realising that you don't actually have to replace everything every year just for the sake of having something new.

I'm happy to report that as my daughter heads into S5 she will be using the same school bag that I got her for the princely sum of £9 when she went into S2. It has survived amazingly, hauling all her senior school books around for three years. And despite getting filthy during term time (forgotten remains of snacks, leaked pens... the usual bottom-of-bag mess that is familiar to any parent) it looks as good as new when it comes out of the washing machine.

Nevertheless, kids grow and kids use things up, and you’re faced with two choices every August: either buy cheap stuff that may not last the year, or buy expensive stuff that they’re going to grow out of well before it wears out.

Some of our local schools now have thrift shops where you can pick up good quality second-hand uniform.

If you've bought good stuff that's still serviceable but your children have outgrown, take it to the school thrift shop so that a) someone else can get the benefit of it and b) the school gets muchneeded funds from thrift shop sales. There used to be a stigma attached to second hand clothes but increasingly it's seen as a responsible and perfectly acceptable option.

Dean Park Primary school has a thrift shop onsite open regularly throughout term, starting Tuesday 12th Aug 9am – 12pm then 9.30-9am and 2.30 – 3.30pm Wednesday and Thursday. Contact the PTA for more details and for regular opening times.

Currie Primary School has a second hand uniform stand at the May Fayre. In the meantime parents tend to use facebook to swap and sell uniform.
