Street names an historical pot pourri

T

he name of the streets we live in and use everyday is something we don’t normally think about at all.

Most of them can be explained by history, and it’s interesting to browse this list of names and learn a little about what’s behind them. Some of them have been named after significant local people, some got their names from what they were used for and the origins of some are lost in the mists of time. This is a selection of a few and I’m sure there are many locals who could supply further information. We’d be delighted to hear from you!

Woodhall (Juniper Green) - the name of an ancient estate, first mentioned in the early fourteenth century. Woodhall House dates from around 1630 and was Junpier Green’s most important residence for many years.

Foulis (Juniper Green) - the name of the family who owned Woodhall House and estate from 1519. Sir James Foulis aquired the estate in 1519 and the estate was in the family for many years.

A certain Sir John Foulis recorded his time at Woodhall House in a diary. A country gentleman, he kept himself busy gardening, bee-keeping and managing a number of local farms and cottages.

Tenants worked for him, filling his coal cellar, planting orchards, thatching his roof, or repairing his carriage. He, in turn, was a kind man, and contributed drink money to several local weddings.

Sir John loved a good party and even had energy enough at age 67 to take on a fourth wife. When he wasn’t at work, a special treat would be hare-hunting with friends, a trip to the Leith races, or a smart new wig!

Thomson (Currie) - named after James Thomson, local poet 1763 – 1832. James Thomson was an Edinburgh boy who was bought up in Currie by his grandparents.

He joined his grandfather in his weaving business at Mid Kinleith at the age of 13 and was instrumental in turning the ailing business around. He married a Currie girl and they moved to the cottage between Mid and East Kinleith Farms, which he later named Mount Parnassus – presumably a reference to the lime bing for Kinleith Paper Mill. Life was hard with a large family to support and meagre income from weaving. Thomson composed poems in the evening, and was also somewhat of a musician. Two volumes of his poetry were published to high critical acclaim at the time, and at the time of his death he was relatively prosperous. A third volume was published after his death.

Baberton – site of an ancient estate originally called Kilbaberton. The history of Baberton House dates back to the early 14th century. Baberton Mains housing was built on the site of Baberton Mains farmland.

Stewart (Currie) – Named after Reverend David Stewart, minister of Currie 1898 – 1949.

Lang Whang – the long stretch of the A70 from Balerno to Carnwath.

Moorland most of the way, over 1000 ft above sea-level at several points, part of an ancient route linking Lothian to Strathclyde. Lang Whang means a long strap or ribbon.

Bryce (Currie) – named after the Bryce family who moved from Currie to Juniper Green in 1881 and set up a large and successful haulage business, as well as several other businesses locally. The family and the company took an active part in community life.

Station Loan (Balerno) – led to the Balerno passenger station, which took passengers between 1874 and 1943.

Burn (the boundary between the two estates). The king took him up on this and wagered the forest of Pentland moor against the life of St Clair. St Clair threiped (Scots for “urged”) his hounds on, who were successful in catching the deer just before it crossed the burn. The area Threipmuir is apparently named after this incident.

Clayhills (Balerno) – this area is shown on a 1627 map as is apparently descriptive of the type of ground; it is reputed to be the site of a pottery. It is the also the site of a former farm and mill on the corner of Lovedale Avenue and Johnsburn Road.

Nether Currie (Currie) – was a small hamlet wiped out by a cholera epidemic in the mid 18th century. Nether means “lower.”

Weaver’s Knowe (Currie) – named after the workers who lived in the area, working in the local weaving industry. A knowe is a small hill.

Threipmuir (Balerno) – named after Threipmuir reservoir. William St Clair of Roslin was hunting with King Robert the Bruce in the Pentlands. The king had apparently often started a white deer but never been able to catch it. On this occasion he asked the nobles with him if any of them had hounds that they thought might be more successful. St Clair said he would wager his life that his two hounds would be able to catch the deer before it crossed the March

Dolphin (Currie) – The name of the ship on which a member of the Gibson-Craig family died, in 1930. Cadet Cummings was the son of Admiral Cummings and Lady Henrietta Gibson-Craig.

Lovedale (Balerno) – named after the Lovedale mission station in South Africa, founded in 1824 by the Glasgow Missionary Society. (A leading member of the society was Dr John Love). The Lovedale housing estate was started in the late 1920s, on land belonging to Mr Menzies of Larchgrove; Mr Menzies was keenly interested in missionary work, hence the naming of the estate after Lovedale Missionary Institute.

Emma Galloway Emma Galloway is one of the dedicated team of people responsible for running the Balerno Music Festival, which this year runs from Wednesday 28th September to Sunday 9th October.

“This year’s Balerno Music Festival should be really exciting, with lots of new additions to the programme. In fact, there were so many events to accommodate, we had to extend the number of days!” Emma says.

Emma first heard about the festival in 2008, while selling ‘Caring Christmas Trees’ at the Balerno Farmers’ Market.

“I have two great passions: music and the community, so when Richard Dennis came to my stall and told me about the Balerno Music Festival, I thought, what a fantastic idea! And wouldn’t it be great to get the village dancing!“ Emma and her lively ceilidh band, Sporrandipity, got people onto the dance floor! The first year they played there were 150 dancers—but expect more than that this year when Sporrandipity play on Friday 7th October. The festival also promises dinners, discussions, music workshops for children and adults, performances by professional musicians and singers, folk concerts, choral concerts, brass jazz, children’s musical entertainment, jazz dance, gospel praise, and lots of youth talent too.

I ask Emma about Caring Christmas Trees.

“I thought around 200 trees would be enough, but we sold 2,000! And last year we became the biggest online charity retailer of Christmas trees. There are now franchise operations in Glasgow, Paisley, Perth and London too. It’s really grown.”

You might get the sense that Emma doesn’t let the grass grow under her feet.

“Just now I’m running a nationwide online event to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Groups turn up on high streets all over Britain with digital pens and paper, and passers by copy two verses of the Bible in their own handwriting, to a huge online version. It will be completed on November 16th (16/11 - because the King James Bible was first published in 1611).

15,000 people will have taken part! There will be a special service to celebrate in Westminster Abbey. “ And what next?

“Well, I’m aiming to be a bit of a social entrepreneur, really. I’m looking for ways to support businesses that contribute to their community. But first I’m just going to enjoy the Balerno Music Festival.”

Everything’s fresh and new at the Bridge Inn, Ratho.

W

hether you’ve visited recently or whether it’s been a while since you called in, you’ll find there have been a lot of changes at the Bridge Inn, with something fresh and interesting each time you come back.

The major renovations are complete.

The scaffolding is a distant memory and the newly painted exterior is a big improvement.

The new Bistro has lots more space, more tables overlooking the canal and a much lighter and fresher room. For a midweek lunch, evening meal or special weekend occasion, we’re sure you’ll love the new look.

The new Bar is ideal for an informal drink or bar meal, seven days a week. It will soon be time to light the real log fire, so come and join us for a drink or informal evening. Look out for our relaunched pub quiz and calendar of live music throughout the autumn.

The new Terrace offers a great spot to enjoy any dry weather and look down on the Union Canal. Bring a coat for the cooler days and come and sample one of the best waterside locations in the Lothians.

neutered rabbit is a happy and healthy rabbit! Neutering of our fluffy friends is often not thought about as much as getting our dogs and cats castrated or spayed. But neutering has many benefits.

Rabbits love to live in pairs, or groups.

Castrated males are much less aggressive and territorial. They are less likely to mark their territory by urine spraying, and they are less like to dig, chew, and generally be destructive. It is also impossible for them to go on to father babies! Neutered females are also much friendlier but it also has health benefits.

It prevents uterine cancers and they are much less likely to get mammary cancers too. Around 80% of un-spayed females will go on to develop uterine tumours after the age of 5 years. Males can be

castrated from around 4 months, females can be spayed from 5 months.

Another important aspect of keeping rabbits is having them vaccinated. There are two vaccines available – Myxomatosis, and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD).

Myxomatosis is a virus that causes a nasty upper respiratory infection. Sticky eye discharge, snotty noses and facial swellings are signs that often progress to a horrible slow, often fatal, disease.

It is spread by fleas, other biting insects and of course contact with infected rabbits. VHD is a disease that is almost 100% fatal. Infected rabbits develop high temperatures, refuse to eat, internal bleeding and often fit. In both diseases, prevention is much better than cure.

A sunny Sunday stroll

T

here are certain times when a walk is most definitely required - something in the air calls for it to be breathed and enjoyed. It was just such a time early on a sunny September Sunday when unbelievably all children and husband were accounted for and work was not yet calling me. The first hint of Autumn was definitely in the air but the sun was warm and the day calm.

Where could I go? I was in Balerno and did not want to venture too far least the weather change, so driving along the A70 toward Carnwath, I took a very minor road on the left before the Kirknewton turn off, signed to a B&B and a footpath to Carlops.

The road twists and turns becoming ever narrower until it forks. I took the right hand fork which turns further right and then on the left is a layby with a sign to Carlops, 5.5 miles. The path is wide and gravelled and I assume it continues that way until heading up into the Pentland Hills and over to Carlops.

The tarmac road however continues, marked no through and signed a Scottish Rights of Way to Leithhead, 1.5 miles. I decided it looked like a good option and with a deep breath of the delightful air I set off. A stile takes you over a gate where a sign asks for care over nesting game birds, so I am guessing that at prime pheasant or grouse shooting season it might not be so peaceful here.

However all was quiet as I wandered up the trail taking in the stunning views on the right over fields to the airfield at Kirknewton and even further to the Forth Bridge, its three spans just peeking up over the horizon. On the left, the landscape was more heavily forested but the views equally stunning as the Pentland Hills stand sentient along the skyline.

As I marched along I was thinking how lucky we are in Scotland to enjoy these rights of way and we probably use them frequently without even realising we are.

Many of them are ancient drovers roads or Kirk Roads that are now on privately owned farmland but still open for the public to use - only of course if you use them responsibly, following the Outdoor Access Code.

Eventually the main path peters out.

There is a ruined building on the right and a gate ahead that you have to jump over. You will see the Pentland Paths sign with an arrow and I have to say I was not sure whether continuing would get me to Leithhead or not. As I did not fancy being stranded on the Pentlands and had been out for a good half hour in gorgeous late summer sunshine, I decided to enjoy the view, and head back.

The return journey allowed me to enjoy the views from the other direction and I slowed my pace all the more to experience the sunshine. However as is often the case with walking in Scotland, I am sure that even in not so clement weather, this would still be a most enjoyable stroll.

Plan your building project with David Hastings

I

f you’re embarking on a building project, and in particular an extension to your house or an attic or garage conversion, forward planning is a must.

All too often people jump into such projects without putting all the paperwork in place first and the costs tend to end up spiraling out of control.

Enter local Building Surveyor David Hastings with all the expertise you need. David has over 40 years experience in all areas of building work. From his younger years helping out his grandfather and uncle who were builders in London, the bug to build was well established.

After graduating from a building course at Heriot Watt David worked at the National Building Agency - a multi disciplinary quango encompassing architects, engineers, surveyors and economists. He was involved in the research and development of building projects, eventually becoming senior technical officer.

When the agency was wound up in 1981, David and two colleagues established their own multi professional firm Williams, McDonald and Hastings. With ultimately four partners and 40 staff, it was and still is a successful business although sadly David is the only partner left.

David still works on housing association and commercial projects but now has more time to spend on the jobs he began his career working on - namely local domestic and office alterations and extensions, bestowing the benefit of his considerable knowledge and experience on his clients. He also manages to fit in a fair amount of golf!

Very involved in the local community, more recently as an energy adviser to the Kirknewton area, David takes pains to ensure that anyone considering building work knows exactly what they are taking on.

“I ensure my clients are involved in all aspects but I am sensitive to developing their ideas in a way that works. I explain the various constraints and all the building and planning regulations,” says David, going on to explain how he will establish a budget and explain how far it will go.

“It is easy to let the finances get out of control when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms,” he smiles, explaining how it is the fitments that bump up the price.

Once the specifications have been agreed, David will prepare sketch designs that comply with planning and building permissions before work can begin. “Building regulations change every few years so you need to ensure your plans conform,” states David. “Sometimes the layout you want can’t be achieved and it’s best to know this ahead of building.”

David offers a free initial survey and consultation up to sketch design stage so that you are on the right track before any outlay. If you’re happy, he then moves to the planning permission stage and obtains this for you before submitting your plans to building control to obtain the Warrant.

David suggests you get your building warrant before approaching any contractors and you have finalised drawings. Contractors can then tender for the work.

David also offers a further service - supervision of the project which often turns out to be a much longer and more time consuming task than first perceived. If you have ever seen an episode of Grand Designs you may well be aware of this, so if you are planning your own ‘grand design’ or even a not so grand one, contacting David at the beginning will get your project on the right track and keep it there.

Recipe and October Food Notes

O

ctober is a time for apple harvest. Apple trees can be planted now while the soil is still warm. There are hundreds of different varieties and many specially bred for the Scottish climate. This spring we planted 8 different trees which in a few years, we hope, will give us both eaters and cookers, in succession, over the winter.

There are 3 apples on these trees already, not much of a harvest but a start.

If you have a small garden you can plant a Family Tree which will have several varieties grafted onto one root. Some are even on roots that will keep the tree small enough to be grown in a largish pot. At the Botanic Garden of Wales they have trained apples on very dwarf root stocks as edging to the flower beds. The “trees” are only about ½ meter high and look neat but are more use than a box hedge. The variety is Howgate Wonder, a tree raised the other side of the Pentlands so this is an idea you could copy here.

Autumn - the nights are drawing in and we begin thinking of food to sustain us and to keep out the cold. This is a good time to turn to traditional work-aday dishes. Many are easy to make, use local ingredients and are not expensive.

So with apples in mind here are some recipes.

Apple Amber 500 gm cooking apples peeled and cored, or a mixture of cookers and sharp-tasting eaters 1 tablespoon honey or sugar for sweetening the apple 2eggs; separated, yellow beaten, white kept for the topping 110 gm white sugar Sliced bread Butter 32

A hand-full of dried fruit if liked.

Or a couple of strips of lemon peel. Do this by using your potato peeler. The rest of the lemon can be used later.

Method Butter the bread and line an oven proof dish with the butter side to the outside.

Cook the apples gently till they fall (go mushy). Take off the heat, add the honey (or tablespoon of sugar) and fruit or lemon peelings, if used, and the beaten egg yellows. Mix well together and pour into the bread lined baking dish.

Bake in 160oC oven for 20 mins.

Make a meringue top by whisking the egg whites till stiff, but not dry, and then add, little by little the sugar. Whisk hard between additions. Turn the oven down to 80oC. Spread the meringue over the apple and cook in the cool oven for 20 mins more.

Timing is not too crucial. The end result should be a crisp outer bread case, creamy filling and a crunchy meringue top. This is delicious at any temperature and needs nothing more; but you could have some clotted cream if you felt selfindulgent. 

 Potato and Apple Bake - Serves 4 500gm potatoes, sliced thin; peeled if you want 500gm cooking apples peeled, cored and sliced 300gm bacon bits. Smoked or not as you prefer. Many supermarkets sell off-cuts or mis-shapes. These are perfect for this dish and not expensive.

Butter or oil for greasing the dish Salt and pepper.

Method Put the sliced potatoes in boiling water and bring them back to the boil. This cuts the baking time. Drain them.

Starting with potatoes. layer the ingredients in an oven-proof dish, seasoning as you go. End with a layer of potatoes. Push the layers down well. Dot the top with a little butter or drizzle oil over the surface.

Bake at 180oC for about 35 minutes or till bubbling and crisp on top.

As a variation you can add layers of fried onions or cover the top with grated cheese.

Curried Apple and Parsnip Soup Serves 4 1 onion; chopped 2 large cooking apples; peeled and rough chopped 2 large parsnips; peeled and rough chopped Teaspoon curry paste or powder 1 pint veg or chicken stock; stock from a stock cube is fine.

A little oil or butter for frying 34

Method Warm the oil/butter, add the onion fry till golden. Add the apples and parsnips and cook for 2or 3 minutes. Add the curry powder or paste; stir everything over the heat to mix. Then add the stock, it will fizz a bit at first, cook on a low heat with a lid on the pan, for 10/15 minutes, by which time the fruit and veg should all be soft.

If you have a blender wand blitz the soup in the pan. If not, either sieve the soup in a mouli or blend in a liquidizer till you have a smooth pale yellow soup. Taste and add salt and pepper to your taste.

Some stock cubes are quite salty so do not add extra till the end.

Re-heat and serve with a blob of plain yogurt and/or some fine cut coriander leaves.

With some crusty bread you have lunch for 4.

f you like putting your feet up at home or love to go out, each month Tony Foster will take you through the highlights of what to do and where to go across the Lothians.

INSIDE Halloween is coming Expect the unexpected on 31st October, traditionally known as Halloween. Kids will come “Trick or Treating” to your door but it is also known as ‘guising’. Children disguised in costumes are recorded in Scotland as early as 1895 carrying turnip torches and being rewarded with cakes, fruit and money. To celebrate this event ‘Inside & Out’ has a spooky theme this month, beginning with the master author of horror books Stephen King. His new book, 11.22.63, is out in hardback on 8th November. This horrific time travelling corker features Jake Epping who travels back in time to 1958, giving up his mobile and iPod for the world of Elvis and JFK. During this time he meets loner Lee Harvey Oswald and begins a series of events and time itself could be changed.

James Morrison and Alice Cooper The Awakening. Is it a new film about the sighting of a child ghost starring Dominic West? The sequel to sci fi horror ‘Species’ or even a 1980 British Horror Film that they ‘thought had been buried forever’?

This Halloween ‘The Awakening’ is the name of James Morrison’s third album, and is released at the end of September.

Another musical morsel very much in keeping with Halloween has to be Alice Coopers ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’. Out early September the new album has songs entitled ‘The Nightmare Returns’, ‘Ghouls Gone Wild’ and ‘Under the Bed’ that are bound to become Halloween soundtrack classics!

It’s superhero month With the number of superheroes on our big screen this summer expect many kids 40

to be out in their Batman, Superman and Spiderman costumes this Halloween.

They can also enjoy Thor, Green Lantern and X Men-First Class this month on DVD and Blu Ray. DC Comics in the US are relaunching all 52 of their superhero comic books. Scottish writer Grant Morrison, who has just released his autobiography ‘Supergods’ is writing the new Superman in Action Comics before tackling Wonder Woman next year. If horror is your thing then pick up Justice League Dark, written

by Brit Pete Milligan, that features characters including Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Zatanna and Hellblazer himself John Constantine. You can pick up the titles at specialist comic shops or online.

Dead Island We knew the gaming industry wouldn’t let our Halloween theme down. Dead Island is available on all formats, for over 18’s only, on 9th September. The game promises a holiday paradise gone mad after a zombie outbreak. Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ this isn’t!

If only because at the end of a game some of the players look like zombies I thought it was worth mentioning the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. It may mean an early morning in front of the telly but the final is on Sunday 23rd October at 9am. By the time you read this you may still get to see England and Scotland play each other on 1st October at 8.30am.

OUTSIDE Things that go bump in the night Having a baby or looking for guidance on your new baby or toddler? The Bump and Baby Fair takes place at the Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel on 6th November with a whole host of exhibitors who will give you help and guidance along the way. There is also a Jack and Jill Market at West Lothian College on 23rd October at 10.30am where you can buy and sell nearly new clothes for kids aged 0 to 9.

Music to your ears

hen a new baby arrives your world is never the same again.

Suddenly there’s another voice to be reckoned with. I’m not talking about the screaming one that keeps you awake at night, but the niggling voice that buzzes around inside your head repeatedly asking, ‘what is best for my baby?’

Finding the answers can be a daunting process. There’s a plethora of conflicting advice and opinion on how to rear happy children and picking your way through it can cause more sleepless nights than colic, teething and soggy nappies combined!

My own answer was music. As a trained classical musician and having taught music to very young children, I was aware, long before becoming a mum, of the importance of introducing babies to music as soon as possible.

All children are born with an innate musicality and only if this is encouraged early enough will a child fulfil their natural musical potential. But the benefits of music for very young children, particularly when taught within a group, go much deeper than this. Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can sharpen up a whole range of educational skills.

That’s why I set up Monkey Music.

Thirteen years ago, I wanted to create a class for my baby daughter which would introduce her to the power of music in a lively, imaginative and social environment.

The spin-off benefits for that first group of little monkeys were immediately obvious. Language and numerical skills flourished through action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills were refined through playing hand held percussion instruments, while an awareness of space and one another was developed through movement. The children’s confidence and self-esteem grew rapidly as their 42

involvement in the classes increased.

Today, Monkey Music classes are a weekly ritual for thousands of young children and families across the country.

For many parents music has gone a long way to answering the eternal question, ‘what is best for my baby?’. For others, the classes are simply a time to enjoy being part of a local community and meeting new parents. As for the children? They’re having such a good time at Monkey Music that they barely seem to notice how clever they are!
