Hello neighbours Our regular writer Karen Murray has been talking to the Director of Harmeny Trust in Balerno and finding out about the littleknown good work they do there. As well as our usual pages for the local walk, puzzles and clubs and classes, this month we have articles on some local business people, and I was also pleased to be asked to include some information on the Currie Show. The sister edition of this magazine, Konect in the Calders area, has been going for two years this month and has become an indispensable handbook for “who does what” in the local area. This edition for Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green and Baberton is also growing, so if you organise community events of any sort in this area do contact us and we can help let people know about them on our What’s On page or even provide space for an article.

Congratulations to Roberta Paton of Balerno who won the crossword prize last month. This month The Weavers in Currie are offering a meal for two. The Weavers has been under new ownership for a year now, and they have been celebrating their first birthday, so try the crossword on page 36 for a chance to win a meal there. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory.

So Many Muscles to Frown! It’s true what they say that it does take more muscles to frown than it does to smile, but over time both sets of muscles lead to wrinkles in our skin. Some of these add character to our faces, but some can age our appearance significantly. For a number of years now we have been placing Botox injections to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Sometimes patients are keen to have these after having some work done on their smile and wanting to compliment this with smoother lines around their face and sometimes it is quite independent to dental work. It needn’t be something extreme, but is usually a gentle softening of lines which can last around 4-6 months.

During April we will treat your frown lines for only £99. Hope that makes you smile.

Harmony at Harmeny Karen Murray talks to the new Chief Executive of Harmeny School

H

idden in the woods in a tranquil setting in Balerno is a wonderful place called Harmeny School. It is unobtrusive and there are those living in the local area who don’t even know of its existence. First set up in 1958, the service then became a Grant Aided Special School providing specialist services to local authorities, families and primary aged children with additional support needs, the school is expanding its resources and offering them to the local community while at the same time continuing the fabulous work it does with children in real need of nurturing. The house was donated to Save the Children by the Younger family (of Younger‘s Tartan Special fame), but by the 1990s it was agreed that Harmeny should become an independent charity and Harmeny Education Trust Limited was established. Recently a new Chief Executive has taken over the reins and is working with his team to continue promoting the links between the School and the community. Coming from Barnardo’s, Neil Squires has all the skills and experience required for this position and took time to show me around the facility. “The children here are those with the most complex additional support needs and their time at Harmeny really has to count,” he explains. “The average stay at the school is two years, eight months and we have a real chance to make a difference in each child’s life,” he continues enthusiastically. The children come from across Scotland but as well as the 25 who live there on a residential basis, there are around 10 children who come from nearer and access a day education service. The aim is to try and get the children who are Harmeny back into their local communities and to live in families and go to school within those communities. Mindful of this, the standard of education is high and follows the Curriculum for Excellence, but learning is taken at the pace of the individual child, with much smaller class sizes and a higher staff / child ratio. For the residential pupils it is a 24 hour curriculum in a nurturing, homely environment.

uires

ive Neil Sq

Chief Execut

The main house has been re-furbished over the years and now includes the main admin block and one of the residential houses. In addition there are small homely cottages, where children are looked after by dedicated teams of care staff. There are well designed class rooms and various lovely specialist learning spaces including an interactive library, music and drama room and craft and design centre. The class group sizes are kept small as are the residential units and as well as learning in a classroom environment, outdoor learning is an equally important aspect of the curriculum at Harmeny. Out with class, there are lots of leisure activities including various groups and clubs. One such initiative is the Girls Group - a time when all the girls at Harmeny get together for a chat and maybe a specific activity. The girls love this time when they can all get together. The Harmeny Enterprise ‘Share’ Certificates are an altruistic initiative where fundraising carried out by Harmeny is shared between the school and a charity of the children’s choice, teaching the children to understand the needs of others. The whole environment at Harmeny is conducive not only to learning but to nurturing and one of the important aspects of life and learning here is community involvement. The children attend various clubs and societies outside Harmeny including everything from Sunday School to rugby or swimming lessons. The local community also play a significant role within the school. Local sports clubs use the facilities, and corporate and individual supporters volunteer time and effort working directly with the children or on environmental projects.

The Friends of Harmeny is made up of an active group of community supporters who host fundraising and social events in support of the school. The Friends are a very important aspect of the School, but being a Friend does not necessarily require attending continual meetings or being at every event. If you are interested in contributing to this exceptionally worthwhile cause, you can simply offer what time and commitment you have, helping organise events, providing equipment or expertise, lending a pair of hands when you can, doing some voluntary work with the children or fundraising. As the saying goes, every little helps. Fundraising events are a great way for everyone to be involved and of integrating with the local community. The St Mungos Christmas Fair held every year in Balerno High School is a great fundraiser with Harmeny selling various wares. The next event being organised by the Friends is a duck race along the Water of Leith in conjunction with Currie Rugby Club. Neil has plans to continue the school’s involvement with the community. The house is situated on a 35 acre estate which includes an all weather sports pitch, adventure playground, mountain bike track, woodland and a raft of fantastic outdoor play equipment. “We have great resources here,” he says, “and we are happy to make some of these resources available to the local community.” He wants to see the grounds put to good use and as environmental issues are important to the school, there are plans afoot to establish an allotment, involving volunteers from the local community. “Our environmental policy is part of a three year plan to reduce our carbon footprint and make responsible use of the wonderful space we have,” he explains. Harmeny Outdoors is also a hugely important aspect of the school. The Outdoor

ntre

Outdoor Ce

Learning team comprises professional facilitators skilled in instructing and leading groups in activities such as mountain biking, kayaking, skiing, as well as environmental activities. These activities are fantastic for the pupils and there are plans to offer these to external groups too. As well as the mountain bike track, the school has a fleet of mountain bikes which are used for lots of fun but also as a tool for learning. As part of the curriculum, some of the older children become part of the ‘Pit Crew’, where they learn to how to maintain and repair the bikes. “It is offering the kids a real skill for life,” says Neil, adding that this is a key element in the ethos of Harmeny -helping the children to assimilate back into everyday life in their own community. Neil clearly enjoys the excitement and challenge of leading the team at Harmeny Education Trust and the fulfilment he gets out of this rewarding role. Harmeny exists to make a difference to children’s lives and the staff and volunteers all work hard to ensure that this happens. It is a wonderful resource and as integration with the surrounding community continues to develop, the Trust will become better known and hopefully receive more support to continue its good work. If you are interested in finding out more about Harmeny, please contact the school on 0131 449 3938 or by email at: admin@harmeny.org.uk

Currie Show

C

urrie Show is a traditional village show, an annual celebration of flowers, fruit, vegetables and handicrafts that has been running every year almost without interruption since 1849. This year the Show will be held on Saturday 27th August at Balerno High School from 2pm – 4pm.

You don’t need any special expertise to enter an item in any of the sections of the show, simply an interest in gardening in all its branches, homebaking or handicrafts. Sections include pot plants, floral art, vegetables and fruit, flowers, homebaking, preserving, needlework and others. There is a junior section for the under 12s to get involved and a chance to display their creativity in a range of items. In the years from 1845 to 1855 there was an explosion of village horticultural shows brought on by the collection mania for more “exotic” plants by the Victorians. Currie Show was one part of that explosion, with the first Show in 1849. Sadly today many of the Societies are gone. Currie is one of few remaining but urgently needs more interest and involvement from the community, in both the running and organisation of the Show and more entries on the Show benches. Without more support there is a strong possibility that the 2011 Show may be the last. If you would like more information on any aspect of the Currie Show, on becoming involved as an entrant or organiser, please visit the website at www.currieshow.org.uk or email robertsimpson1@blueyonder.co.uk. The Show is open to residents from Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green, Hermiston and Baberton Mains. People who reside outside the villages but who attend organisations or are employed within the area are also eligible to take part at Currie Show.

Currie Balerno Rotary Club

C

urrie Balerno Rotary Club is 30 years old this year. Rotary clubs are found all round the world, involving themselves with local and international community projects by raising money for worthwhile causes and having fun in doing so. Rotary is involved in all the world’s great disasters and campaigns. The greatest one is End Polio which has involved Rotary clubs around the world in the past decade. We have now nearly succeeded - since 1988 it is reckoned that the worldwide programme has prevented 5 million cases of childhood paralysis and 250,000 deaths, with 99% of polio now eliminated. The final world-wide challenge for Rotary, working with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and the US Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, is now to eliminate polio in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. The last $200million being raised by Rotary is supported by $355million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary is also recognised for influencing

16

politicians and providing volunteers on the ground to get the job done. The End Polio Now Message lit up iconic landmarks around the world to celebrate Rotary International’s 105th anniversary - the Pyramid of Khafre in Egypt, Taipei Arena in Taiwan and the Obelisk in Buenos Aires. Currie Balerno club has participated actively in this great campaign, and thank our local community for money raised. As participants in the world’s largest service organisation, with 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs, we are naturally proud of our involvement in many local and international service projects and welcome new members. What will the next 30 years hold for your local Rotary club? See our website at www.cbrotary.org.

Fabric Addiction! V

isiting Marys’ Patch is like stepping into an Aladdin’s cave of fabrics, textures, colours and all things patchwork. The shop is owned and run by Sara Brown. Growing up in Dundee, Sara was surrounded by handicraft and fabrics; her mother made their own clothes and always had a bag of scraps. Sara learned to knit and sew at an early age and loved all types of craft; her teenage rebellion, she comments wryly, consisted of knitting cardigans and bobbin lace items for charity! The family moved to Balerno when Sara was 14, where she started in the third year at the brand new Balerno High School. After studying Modern History at university, she worked for a while in the publishing industry, doing freelance editorial work for scientific and medical journals. She kept up her interest in needlecraft, although it wasn’t until she attended a day workshop in patchwork at Currie High School with her mother, that she got hooked on patchwork and knew she had found her calling. It was still a while before Marys’ Patch opened though. Whilst living in the States when her own children were little, Sara’s nearest shop was a fabric shop. There, while her husband was at work and with her toddlers in tow, Sara fed her fabric addiction. The craft business started off as more of a hobby than a serious business, selling an eclectic mix of items including beads, hooks and eyes, velcro dots, elastics, buttons, ribbons, novelty yarns, as well as items that Sara had made herself. She was part of a craft co-operative in East Lothian, and attended craft fairs once a month in different locations. In 2004 she decided to find a permanent home for a craft fair, and so the Balerno Craft Fair was born in the Community Centre. With her network of craft businesses from the co-op, Sara got the craft fair going, promoting it with leaflets and posters

18

around Currie and Balerno. The fair still Sara Brown runs today alongside the farmers’ market every month. She has an eye for unusual fabrics and found that customers were mainly interested in where she got her fabrics from. So the focus of the business shifted to selling fabrics rather than the finished handicrafts. After five years at premises in West Calder, Marys’ Patch has recently moved to The Barn at Veitch’s Garden Centre, East Calder. “The Barn is the shop that I envisaged having for a long time”, says Sara. It is light and airy and she has set up a wall of fabrics. There is plenty of space for teaching and plenty of parking space. The only disadvantage, she laughs, is that she spends far too much in the garden centre – gardening is her other passion. Besides selling materials for patchwork and quilting, teaching has always been an important part of Marys’ Patch. There are currently around 70 students at different levels and they have won three competition prizes in the past two years at the Scottish Quilt Show at Ingliston. True to the origins of patchwork, nothing at Marys’ Patch is wasted. Their fabric scraps are just strips, and along with cotton reels, fabric cores and other bits and pieces they are given to local schools, scout groups and other organisations for children to use in craft projects. Even the packets that threads come in are re-used as seed planters! The only thing they throw away is the plastic wrapping that the rolls of fabric come in. So whether you are addicted to textiles, just like to do some needlework as a hobby, pop into Marys’ Patch in East Calder and Sara and her team will be delighted to help out.

Spicy Village, Balerno Mohammad, who owns and runs the Spicy village in Main Street Balerno, comes from a well-established line of Indian chefs. His father Mr. Gulzar was the first Indian chef in Glasgow, working at two restaurants the Shish Mahal in Gibson Street and the Taj Mahal in Park Road. The Spicy Village curries are the finest Indian curries still made to the same traditional recipes as Mohammad’s father. They are also very different to the usual Edinburgh-style curries which are mainly Bangladeshi. For those of you not sure of the difference I recommend you give them a try and taste the difference. I have eaten at the Spicy Village a few times and each time I have really enjoyed the freshness of the flavour and the complexity of the spices. I recently

20

ordered the South Indian garlic chilli lamb which was tender and as they said.... it was spicy hot! The chicken Jaipuri had an intense fresh flavour and the Special Punjabi Korma is just like the popular creamy kormas but with an added blast of Punjabi spices which gives it a totally unique medium spicy flavour. The tandoori oven cooks nan breads, chicken and lamb tikka, tandoori chicken and shish kebabs are made to order fresh every day. If you haven’t been to try them yet I recommend you go and taste the difference, you won’t be disappointed. Jenny Thomson

It is now run by Isso, who has made significant changes to the menu and has more changes planned for the future. He has done away with most of the pre-prepared frozen food that used to be served here, and now all pizzas, kebabs and pasta dishes are made fresh everyday from fresh ingredients. Isso makes everything from scratch including the pizza dough. He has also introduced

a delicious range of handmade Italian ice cream, so as the weather warms up check out his ice cream this summer which is available in a wide range of flavours including Belgian chocolate, strawberry fudge, double vanilla, raspberry ripple, mint choc chip and other favourites. Isso is originally from Syria, and has been in the UK for 10 years. He has over 10 years’ experience running chip shops and takeaways and has lots ideas that he wants to implement at Papa Crolla’s. His priority was to get the menu and food up to scratch, but he also plans to change the name of the business and improve the décor in the future.

Village People: Adrian Smith By Emma Merchant

I

wander happily round Adrian Smith’s shop, Sofa so Good, while he chats with a customer. Surrounded by quietly elegant sofas, bookcases, sideboards and tables, I’m struck by the beauty of the furniture and find I want to glide my fingers over every piece. The smooth finish and rich colours are very appealing. Ordinarily I’m a flat-pack furniture girl, with many hours’ experience of poring over instructions and fiddling with allen keys. But today I am converted to crafted solid wood. “Most pieces come from Eastern Europe, the far East, Italy or England,” Adrian explains. “Everything is individually made from sustainably produced wood— European Oak or Sheesham, a fast-growing Indian hard wood.” Then he points to a bookcase shaped like an up-ended rowing boat. It has a particularly attractive wood grain and an aged character. “But this piece is made from reclaimed wood,” Adrian says. I imagine the wood’s previous life—as floorboards in a Lithuanian castle, perhaps, or as panelling in a transatlantic paddle steamer. What secrets the wood might tell, if it were able.

Adrian originally entered the furniture business as assistant manager in a city furniture store and sank so comfortably into it that he eventually opened his own shop in Howe Street, Edinburgh. Selling furniture suits him: he likes design, and enjoys building a good relationship with customers, helping them choose colours and styles.

early birthday request (even though my birthday is not for months). Adrian also sells colourful lacquered artwork, interesting lamps and ornate candlesticks. Which brings me neatly on to his other passion—acting. He most recently appeared as Dick Wick the Candlestick, in Balerno Theatre Company’s Christmas show, Bonnie and the Beast. I tell Adrian I thought the show was hilarious. “Rehearsals are tremendous fun!” he enthuses. “I enjoy the complete change from my normal day and it’s a great way to meet folk.” A founder member of BTC, and now chairman, Adrian has taken part in nearly every show since he first trod their boards eighteen years ago. No doubt he will be performing in next Christmas’s Hello Dolly! too. Until then, he is being kept busy with his latest production:-a second shop which he has opened in Morningside this month. Considering his musical theatre involvement, I suggest he should, perhaps, name the new shop Sol-fa So Good. “Thanks,” says Adrian. “I’ll think about it.” The new Sofa So Good store opened at 6163 Morningside Rd at the start of May. Take this article along to the shop before 31 June and Adrian will give you one free song with any purchase!

What does he look for in good furniture? “Simple designs, a classic look that will last, interesting upholstery, exciting fabrics and occasional quirky pieces. Above all I look for good quality and good value,” he says. And he finds them. To my surprise, Adrian’s prices compare favourably with my previous flat-pack purchases. I make a mental note to come back. Soon. With husband and

Currie Circle : Enjoying an evening stroll By Karen Murray

I

sn’t it wonderful when the days get longer and the evenings draw out? When we are also blessed with sunshine, it means evening walks in daylight and even warmth can be enjoyed. Great for those who are working all day and trying to fit in some exercise or simply a good way of unwinding after a long day. The dedicated moonwalkers can be seen out and about now - fitting in their longer training sessions and delighting in the extra hours available. But you don’t have to be in training to enjoy an evening stroll. On a particularly sunny Sunday evening recently, I gathered together the family for a walk and amazingly enough there wasn’t too much of a protest from any of the assembled crew, all down to the fact that it was warm and I had promised sweet treats afterwards.

We headed to the car park at the Harlaw Reservoir. This is a favourite haunt of ours, but we usually head around the reservoir. This time however, we decided to try a different route. Instead of heading to the visitor centre, we went through the gate directly at the end of the path leading to the car park and followed the narrow path through what is currently a potato field. The sun was low in the clear blue sky and the Pentland Hills rose up before us. This path veers to the left and then heads between the hills, not rising too substantially before before dropping down to the Glencorse Reservoir and Flotterstone. After walking for about 20-25 minutes, you come to a wall with a ‘kissing gate’. Straight ahead is the way to Flotterstone which will probably take between 1.5-2 hours depending on fitness levels and whether you are walking with kids or not.

However, as the evenings are still not quite that long and the promised sweets not enough of an incentive, we chose to take the path to the left signed for Currie. The terrain becomes a little rockier along here but you can also walk on a woodland path running alongside the main track that meanders through the trees, with views of the hills all along the right and over fields to the left. The gorse bushes bring a splash of colour and the birdsong adds the musical accompaniment. The evening sun was bringing the best out in the children and there was no squabbling or moaning. They were enjoying the exercise, fresh air and even the views as much their parents! This path continues pretty much straight with the woodland eventually becoming scrubland, until you come out at the sharp bend on the tarmac road that leads up from Currie to Harlaw. Again we stopped to take in the views as you can see across the whole city of Edinburgh from here.

Turn left and walk along the road between the fields to the point where you see the road up to the Harlaw Reservoir on the left. Head up here and you have completed the circle. The whole walk takes around an hour, perhaps a little longer with small people in tow, quicker if done at training pace. Back at the car park, you can always pop into the visitor centre if it is during opening hours or sit and enjoy a picnic in the wildlife garden. As for us, it was home via the shops for the promised sweet treat. A most enjoyable way to end the day.

Homemade bread

Recipe from The Hedgerow Bakery and Tearoom

Ingredients 600g Strong White Flour 400g Water 5g Salt 8g Fresh Yeast or 4g Dried Yeast 25g Butter Turn on your oven to the highest it will go approx 220ºC /gas mark 7-9 Method 1. Dissolve the yeast in some of the water in a separate bowl then place the remaining ingredients - flour, salt and butter - into another mixing bowl and combine the ingredients by hand. 2. Pour the yeasty water into the mixing bowl with the flour and add the remaining water. If you are using a stand mixer with a dough hook mix on slow until all the ingredients are combined then increase the speed to medium for 4 minutes. By this time the dough should be quite stretchy, not sticky wet. If you are mixing with your hand hold the bowl with one hand and use the other to mix the ingredients together. As soon as all the dry ingredients have become wet, scrape out onto a work top for kneading. It is important not to add any more flour at this stage even if the dough seems too wet or sticky - as you knead the flour it will absorb the water and the mix will slowly become more elastic. Depending on your muscle or stamina it will take approx 10 – 15 minutes. 3. Place the bread dough into the mixing bowl and cover with a supermarket carrier bag and leave at room temperature. After 1.5 or 2 hours your dough will have risen, but if the dough still does not look as if it has doubled in size just leave it a little longer. 4. Grease a large baking tray, set aside, then tip the dough back onto the work top - you may need to flour the surface slightly at this point. With the heal of 32

your hand flatten it until it is the size of a dinner plate and now taking one of the edges of the circle take it over to ¾ the opposite edge of the circle. Press it down and continue around the loaf repeating the operation. The idea is to stretch the dough so that when you turn it over it should form a reasonable round ball. 5. Gently lift your bread onto your baking tray cover with cloth or bag again and leave for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes your bread should be ready to go into the oven. 6. Remove the cover from your bread. It is possible to wet the top of the bread and put seeds or flour or score it with a sharp knife - be careful not to cut too deep. As quickly as possible, get the dough into the oven. This should take 3040 minutes. After 25 minutes turn down the oven to 200ºC or gas 7. Your loaf with be ready with a golden brown top. Lift it out with a tea towel and it should sound hollow; if not place back in the oven and cook for another 10 min. Leave it to cool for 30 minutes. It is important to wait to ensure it is easy to cut. Once you have made your own bread you will find it difficult to buy packet bread! Recipe and method provided by The Hedgerow Bakery and Tearoom, Almondell Garden Centre, East Calder, 01506 885572. Delicious freshly baked bread straight from the oven to take away. Homemade lunches and cakes to enjoy in the tearoom.

Currie Rugby Club - P6 Tour Dublin By Ben Wilson, Tour Captain

A

t the end of March, I had the pleasure of being the tour captain of Currie Rugby Club’s P6 tour to Dublin. It was such a great success and all the players benefited immensely from the experience.

The tour was a team effort which started months before. The team had to learn more advanced rugby rules to play in Ireland. Weeks of late night training in Ratho paid off. Lots of fundraising activities by the parents and coaches just increased the sense of anticipation as the day arrived. Two buses left Balerno with the players, coaches and the Mums, Dads and Siblings. After a long trip, we got to Dublin just before midnight. Next day, our Amber team got off to a speedy start against St Mary’s. They could not cope with our pace, but then came back time of music Nur turing a life

in the second half to draw. Our Black team dominated their game in parts but were unable to contain their opponents by the final whistle. An even tougher opponent at Old Belvedere, was up next. Both of our teams had got to grips with the new rules and everyone put in a fantastic performance. Another draw for the Ambers meant they were unbeaten on tour, with the Black’s putting in a great effort – making all the coaches incredibly proud. We held our “end of season” awards at the dinner on Saturday night and this allowed us to say thank you to all our brilliant coaches and supporters. Our head coach, Darren Cartlidge, is moving to Hong Kong. He has been a superb role model and we will miss him. Both our host teams provided great hospitality and we are keen to reciprocate next year. Overall, it was a very successful tour and a hugely enjoyable experience. We are already planning our next big adventure – our S1 tour to France. The fundraising starts now!
