DEPLAN DESIGN COLLECTIVE

SABBIC OFFICE, Dammam

1600sqm area of the Sabbic office landscape area is renovated with contemporary design elements, to incorporate more open-shaded seating areas, that eventually turns out to be iconic element of the projects.

The earlier landscape was subdivided to create smaller spaces within the whole, creating interesting spatial definitions. Materiality of the landscape is also redefined by incorporating gravel area separted by PVC dividers

APARTMENT BOULEVARD, Riyadh

A boulevard designed in a 5m wide and 300m stretch in a Narjis district Apartment. The goal was to create a collage of spaces across the stretch which feel homogenous but are mutations of a unit system. The Play area for kids becomes the highlight of the boulevard, breaking the monotony with its colourful setting and a sense of order that exists as in a kids’ story; enough to hold it together while giving way to the fun-loving nature of children.

HAJER COMMERCIAL

2400 sqft rooftop retreat. An escape to a green niche from the daily hustle for the office users of the Hajer building. The design concept allows one to accept the reality of being away from the ground while allowing them to enter into a surreal yet natural experience away from the ground.

STAY COMMERCIAL

Design Proposal for STAY Commercial building. The design proposal covered the entrance yard, the atrium space and the rooftop seating, comprising a total area of 1400 sqft

M.ARCH THESIS

MEGA EVENT AS AN URBAN REVIVAL STRATEGY

Bottom-up initiative: Top-down management and promotion:

An urban revival strategy: Mega sports events promotes sports activities and inspire healthy lifestyle among people. Infrastructure development benefit the economic and social development

• Thesis is inpired by global movements and initiatives like ‘Global Active City’. The concept is to promote use of city resources and planning policies for the welfare of public health and activities and Global open street movement like Ciclovia and CicLAvia

• NYC Marathon; About which an article on ‘Gehl people’ says: “...strategic contribution to a city’s social offerings, branding, reputation, and tourism initiatives” “Direct and indirect economic benefits to the city”

• “The social energy (..)strong catalyst in uniting a city and recognising, celebrating and promoting public life.”

• The focus area is dilineated using GIS data analysis. Indices used include Built-Use Index(BUI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI)

• A number of parameters were considered to bring down the focus area of the thesis. These include nodality, proximity and networking.

• Land use and on-site analysis data were used to define the characteristics of each nodes within the focus area. These characteristics were then interpreted in the proposals

• Each nodes were analysed for the various recreational related activities that occur in nodal centres and the urban characters that supported these activities.

• Graphs of number of people engaged in each Activities over time showed how the intensity of these activities were distributed over time.

MEGA EVENT AS AN URBAN REVIVAL STRATEGY

Views

• Life balance centre: As explained above the design solution addresses the temporary nature of the event-part of the strategy and proposes a training centre which act as a permanent ‘anchor’ of the revival strategy. The training centre is designed to cater physical training requirements and recreational activity needs of the society.

• An open public performance space which is conducive for hosting cultural and social events. This allows for cultural interpretation among tourists and communities alike.

• The spaces are designed to be adaptable for a wide array of activities and games.

• Based on Generative design, the Façade of the Training centre is generatively optimized. The façade design with fenestrations is optimized for the lowest total solar radiation in the summer and the highest solar radiation in the winter.

• This can attract wide range of age groups and interest groups to the training centre.

• Creating a boundary condition that merges with the public realm makes the training centre feel more community-centred and welcoming.

AIM: To design NID campus that is conducive for collaboration of diverse minds

The design was inspired by the concept of ‘oasis within’, in a site that does not provide outward attractions or interests, the attention is driven inwards. The design explores diverse interactive spaces and spaces conducive to different modes of learning and functioning. While exploring different formal and informal spaces the design demonstrates how this duality co-exist in everything; formal-informal, order-chaos, simple-complex. The design makes use of ‘thresholds’ as explained by Richard Dober to contrast the duality in spaces.
