Hive pick stokes complement the original d.school stoke deck. We borrowed these stokes from many different places, and practice them before events, workshops, and classes at the Hive. BURNING QUESTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Write your question for a selected topic on a piece of paper. 2. Circle the group up. 3. Crumple and throw your paper to the middle of the circle. 4. Randomly pick one and read it to yourself. 5. Throw it back into the circle. 6. Repeat. 7. Go around the circle and share out the most interesting question you read.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Triangle: Pick 2 people and form an equilateral triangle with each person at a corner of the triangle. Silently choose one of the two as your “enemy�. 2. Escape: Move around while keeping someone between you and your enemy at all times.

3. Defend: Stay in between 2 people at all times.

Notes: A good warmup with movement and collision. Use when energy is low to make people think about conditions.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Without talking, line up in order of birthday (day, month, year).

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Make groups of 2. 2. Tell teams to quickly make physical representations, without talking, of what you say. 3. Merge into groups of 4 and repeat, merge into groups of 8 and repeat, merge into one big group of everyone and repeat. Prompt for groups of 2: peanut butter + jelly, fork + spoon, paper + tape, mouse + keyboard, night + day Prompts for groups of 4: table + chairs, salad Prompts for groups of 8: river, forest, car Prompts for all: airplane, ceiling fan

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Divide the room into 4 corners (or set up the room in a 2x2 axis with tables/chairs). 2. Put a stack of cards with written prompts face down at each of the 4 corners/ends of the axes. 3. Have people flip over and read out one prompt from each axis/corner and ask them to move and place themselves where they identify on the axes/ in its quadrants. Repeat for all prompts. Sample axes: - coffee/tea; mountain/beach - wine/beer; book/movie - introvert/extrovert; morning/night

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Find a partner and face each other. 2. Each partner slaps their hands on their knees. 3. Then move their hands up and to the right, to the left, or above their heads in rhythm. 4. Repeat this process as fast as you can. 5. If both partners’ hands go in the same direction, slap your knees, and then high five each other with both hands. Go fast!

I’M LOOKING FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME

INSTRUCTIONS 1. The group stands in a circle with one person in the center. 2. The person in the center completes the statement: “I’m looking for someone like me who...” 3. People who identify with the statement step into the circle. 4. The person who was in the center selects someone to complete the statement next, as the rest of the people go back into the circle.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. The whole group forms a circle. 2. Two people step into the middle of the circle. On the count of 3, they each say a random word and then step back to their original spots. 3. Two new people step into the circle and say 1 word each. The goal is to say a word related to the two words said previously so that eventually, two people say the exact same word. 4. Repeat with new pairs stepping into the circle until one pair says the same word. chair

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Everyone forms a circle. 2. Point to one person so that everyone is pointing to a different person in the circle. 3. Now, watch the person you are pointing at and mimic their actions.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Have the group make a list of random objects/ things (e.g. cardboard, shoelace, stool, cheese, coffee cup, laptop, cow). 2. Now have people pick one and add an “ing” and describe it as a new product or service. Example: “Cheese-ing is a new product that captures group photos and automatically adds a wide smile to everyone’s face.”

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Have each person in a group find a partner. 2. Ask each other, “Where are you from?� Task: Create a secret handshake together. 3. Find a new partner and ask each other about a childhood memory. Task: Come up with a nickname for each other. 4. Find a new partner and discuss a recent failure. Task: Make up a life motto for each other. 5. Find a new partner, and discuss a recent success. Task: Create a celebratory dance. 6. Ask everyone to walk around and find their handshake partner and shake hands, find their nickname partner and yell out their nickname, and so on until all tasks are repeated.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Have each team make two lists: one of objects and the other of animals or plants. 2. Then have people take turns making a pair featuring one word from each list and explain what it is. Objects chain pencil shoe rock table bed

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Form pairs and decide a person A and person B. 2. Ask A to tell a 30-second story of something that happened to them recently. 3. Have B repeat the story in first person. 4. Then ask B to tell a 30-second story of something that happened recently. 5. Have A repeat the story in first person in 60 seconds, embellishing wherever they want.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Write the word “right” on a piece of scrap paper or post-it note. 2. Crumple it up. 3. Throw it out. 4. Discuss: How did that feel?


TREASURE ISLAND


TREASURE ISLAND

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Select a person to be the gatekeeper who will sit blindfolded in a chair at one end of the room. 2. Everyone else collects any items in the room and puts them around the gatekeeper. 3. Everyone starts at the other side of the room (opposite the gatekeeper) and quietly sneaks their way forward. The goal is to steal all the items back to their side of the room. 4. The gatekeeper can point at any noise they hear around themself. If a person gets pointed at, they must drop any items they have in hand and return to their side of the room to start again. 5. The game ends when all items are collected.
