The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: The objectory exercise helped to understand the design detail of an object, Analyse how its parts and components come together, the manufactuing and working process of the object. It developed an eye for detail, precision, accuracy and tolerance. The first stage of the exercise is to identify object that intrigue us, inspire us and also capture our attention. The object choosen here is Brass Sanch machine, whic is 60 year old hand made antique piece. The second stage emphasises on analysing the object through its geometry, proportions, sizes, scale, form, structure, ergonomics, components and kit of parts, details, materials, colours, usage, assembly and its sequence. The final output demonstrates precision by way of observing and representing. The study of tolerance is achieved through identifying the assembly of parts, materials, and accuracy by way of orthographic and exploded isometric drawings.

Analytical sketches of the object

Manufacturing Process : Brass Sancha machine is made of a manual process called Sand Casting. The pure brass is seperated from its ore and heated at 900-940 C°. Then the brass is poured into the die cavity in its molten state. The rough parts that have been produced through this method is then finished by abrasive blasting, machining or polishing.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Process: The Factory exercise is all about planning of making. The exercise revolves around exploring the ideas of the detail, assembly, tectonics and material as a central core of making of an object. The maganize holder designed considering and analysing the strcutural properties of the material palatte given. A factory is a place where materials are processed and transformed with precision, accuracy, and tolerance for assembly. This exercise imitates a manufacturing environment where the process of making starts with a well-planned strategy. It focuses on the planning of manufacturing and execution. The magazine holder had to be designed within a volume of 600x600x1500mm and shaped from the given kit of materials. Size of Domus Magazine: 300 x 220 (In closed condition) 300 x 440 (In open condition) Approx weight :350 to 500 g The team of 3 from diiferent backgrounds worked with same material palette given and tried out different iterations of the object. It was interesting to see the multiple possibilitites and exploration with the material. We analysed pros and cons of each iteration done and took advantage of each model, put it together as one single output. The object is free standing and floor mounted. The details and their techniques, used in the assembly of the object prevented any kind of deformation that may be caused due to any external dynamic forces. The learning outcomes are giving shape and dimension to the given materials for appropriate usage. Identifyng and using appropriate fixing hardware and accessories. Developing awareness about the manufacturing process and tools. Applying the act of assembly as a predominant function of the design process.

Material List for the object is as follows: 1. Wood- 75 x 40 x 1000 (1piece) 2. Wood- 40 x 40 x 750 (2 piece) 3. Metal- M.S. Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) 4. Perforated MS Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) 5. M.S. rod- 10 dia & length of 750; (2 piece) 6. M.S. L angle of 25 x 25 x 750 (3mm thk) (2 piece) 7. Week 05 | FD PG Module 01

Developing the Argument Brief: The exercise began with understanding of what is an Interior technique by examining various built projects and identifying the ones that have the potential to be taken up further for study. 9 projects of 3 different category was selected ( a:Historical /era centred project, b:standardised- mass customised project and c:individual identity-driven projects ) based on the ‘role of interior designer’ across a multitude of projects. The interior techniques, the core key values of decisions taken by the designers were critically examined. The study of these selected projects are put in a matrix, with their methods of interior techniques i.e to modify, to alter, to conceal, to expose, etc. Multiple Arguments were built by looking at the same methods across the projects, and various methods within the project. One Master Argument is then arrived at based on the analysis.

Analysis of designer’s project drawings: The drawings of the projects were studied. The Thresholds between interior and exterior, spatial relationships, material, light quality were carefully examined.

Argument Developed Threshold is the transaction point between the spatial environments. They live in the sequnce of what lies in the past, present and future. They exist in interior elements, such as doors, screens, corridors, anteroom, any fenestration that establishes physical and visual relationships between objects and places. The shape and form of the threshold gives visual clue about upcoming space. It can also affect how users capture spatial sequence and predict what happens in or around. The visual interest in the threshold spaces is created by light- which is modulated by planes in threshold.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: Argument: The modulation in form of the threshold at any transaction point between the two interior environment gives visual clue about upcoming space. It can also affect how users capture spatial sequence and predict what happens in or around. This exercise is all about creating experience through image of an historical site with respect to the master argument. The Experience of space is understood through the elements, compositions and moments one may encounter in the space. This is seen through a visual study of how light, texture, color, material and finishes play out in space. Program : Exhibition space that houses Leonardo da Vinci’s Dream machines. The exhibition is open to all Science enthusiasts. Site : Mill owners’ association building, Ahmedabad. The iconic Mill Owners’ Association building designed by Ar.Le Corbusier has a strong threshold itself which supported the argument. The building has open freeflowing spaces, that would be a great place for it to be an exhibition space. The crucial role of an interior designer is to understand the qualities of the existing space and combine it with the functional requirements of new use. Range of interior enviroments was created that articulates the identity and atmosphere, through the spatial volume and placement of elements like wood metal screens and stone furniture. The original space is very much retained in its original Structural state and the new interior is blended within it. A sense of balance and harmony of interior elements with respect to the scale and materiality between existing space and the proposed interior is achieved. A new contemporary layer of value and consequence is added to the building, which is appropriate and sympathetic to the original building. Intresting and intriguiging spatial volumes created using threshold spaces.

The site: Three different site historical context were given for adaptive reuse. 1. Mill Owner’s Building,Ahmedabad. 2. Ruins 3. Udaipur City Palace. The Mill owner’s building is selected since is has strong threshold which reflects the master argument.

The Subject: The space has to be reused as an exhibition. The exhibition features ingenious inventions by Leonardo da Vinci: various prototypes of flying machines, robots to be used both in the battle field and on stage, all accompanied by large scale models.

The site photographs that has strong thresholds are selected. The perspective of the interior space in each picture is analysed. The light from the existing openings is taken into advantage. The material palette that goes in hand with the existing built space is choosen. The planes were created that encloses the exhibits.. The exhibits are positioned in such a way it is not directly reveaed to the user. The planes and forms are modulated to give visual clue about the space and the exhibits through the threshold. The corridors and anterooms created to remember the past space and to anticipate about the upcoming space.

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: The designer’s role is to create an unique interior space in one unit of the mass standardised project. This standardised unit site intervenes in major design desicions of the space. The exhibition space is developed based on the interactive countinous momentum and how thresholds helps that momentum visually, physically and psychologically and choreograph the space. An effective threshold can enhance and choreograph an interior space. In this design, the exhibits are placed along this momentum. Fenestrations are made in the partition that performs as visual and physical threshold. These thresholds in the horizontal plane are enhanced through sequence of the arches. The perspective has been manipulated by diminishing of the arches. Thus, the journey is exaggerated and the focal point is made clear. The vertical threshold in the vertical plane is made through Periscopes that deliver a sense of simultaneity with deep vistas of the object crossing multiple levels. These periscopes make the exhibition space interactive and universally accessible. The partitions are suspended to the ceiling, to give clear floor space and to let light in to the inner corners of the dark interior space. The light materials like 16mm Flexiply and 16mm Polycarbonate sheet is used. The polycarbonate sheet is translucent and it visually expands the space. When the design is approached via the eye of the Master Architect Peter Zumthor, the circulation and the partition were made cohesive, intimacy created by altering the partition proximity and materials, movement induced via play of natural and artificial light

Ideating Role 3 of Interior Designer Brief: The role involved in designing an interior space irrespective of the specific site but following the same material and interior technique developed in the previous design stages. The spaces designed based on various design decisions like light, circulation, acess, vistas and transition. The details of elements, junction and construction assemblies all inform the production of spatial experience as well as organization. The thresholds between 2 exhibits in one interior enviroments, threshold between two different interior environment horizontally and vertically, threshold between interior and exterior is explored. The physical visual temporal and psychological thresholds were also explored. An evelope developed that compliments the intervention.
