The scripture passages for Mass the first couple weeks of Advent focus on the reality that we're now living in the time between the Lord’s first coming as a Babe in Bethlehem and when he'll come again in glory. We know not when he will return, but we understand that the purpose of his first coming was to instruct us, that he the Christ came and suffered his Passion, cross and death to model for us how to love sacrificially. We apparently have a good while to go before everyone in this world begins to follow that model, because we recognize that war, death and destruction, as well as greed, focus on the material things of this world and seem to rule the day until this time. The Lord is patient with humanity, however, at some time each of us will experience our particular judgment. If we die before the Lord returns, we'll personally stand in his presence and make an accounting of ourselves. So that's why he says, "Stay awake; be conscious of the fact that your purpose of living out this life is to become Christ for one another." Now, we might say, "Well, only 2.5 billion of the world's population even know about Christ," and that's true. But now we have this amazing means of communication called the "Internet," and every little nook and cranny of the world will ultimately receive the Word. Unfortunately, they'll also receive a lot of negative, and even vulgar, images in the process. However, the Word of Christ will penetrate the darkest, furthest and most remote places in the world. Each person will have the opportunity to decide for himself: "yes" to the will of God, or "yes" to his personal will. Today we experienced from our first reading the beautiful vision that Isaiah proclaimed about the mountain of the Lord's house being established as the highest mountain, and that from Zion will come forth instruction and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. We know that Jesus came to fulfill all of the scriptural prophecies; he indeed came as Messiah to Israel. He came proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is in your midst and revealed the Father's plan for our salvation. He mounted his throne which was the altar of the Cross in Jerusalem, and he modeled sacrificial love that we're called to adopt in our lives. It's not easy! The struggles of this lifetime will continue until he returns in glory. Each day we make decisions as to whether we'll respond to what the Lord wants us to do, or to pursue what we view as in our own interest. St. Paul, speaking to the Romans, says that we should throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. That armor is the Lord Jesus Christ. We will explore this matter deeply during this Advent Season. In particular, we're asked for four weeks to sincerely review the circumstances of our life: to examine whether we're living in accordance with what the Lord would have us do and, if not, to make the decision for Christ. On Christmas the Child arrives; as we commemorate that first coming of the Lord, let us be prepared. As we do our Christmas preparation for our family and our home, let us also create a beautiful clean room within us, where the light of Christ will come and shine. That's what we should be striving to achieve in preparation for Christmas during this Advent Season. Attending Daily Mass During Advent The daily Mass routinely recognizes and celebrates the memorials of the Saints. Saints such as St. Augustine, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Pope John Paul II or others such as St. Theresa of Calcutta are celebrated and recalled for how powerfully they conformed their lives to Christ. At the daily Mass we learn about their personal lives and how their devotion to the Lord and His people became a cause for sainthood. There is great value in this as we strive to follow the examples they give us. “Too often we have put the saints on pedestals, imagining that their degree of holiness is beyond our reach, but the saints we meet at daily Mass are ordinary women and men just like you and me. They have not fallen perfect from heaven nor do they have some superhuman DNA. Like us, the saints were good, but, also like us, they faced big challenges. Some were overworked and financially strapped; some were crippled with doubts, fears, and scruples; some were betrayed by friends or slandered by enemies; some were entrapped in sin and had to find the grace to fight their way to freedom, and so on.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church at section 1195 states: “By keeping the memorials of the saints—first of all the holy Mother of God, then the apostles, the martyrs, and other saints—on fixed days of the liturgical year, the Church on earth shows that she is united with the liturgy of heaven. She gives glory to Christ for having accomplished his salvation in his glorified members; their example encourages her on her way to the Father.” Please consider joining us for daily Mass, when you are able, in order to experience the wonder of these, our great friends and intercessors. They will inspire you and help you through the struggles of this life, encouraging you to join them in the heavenly realm with Jesus.

Advent Wreath Tradition
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is Nov. 27. In observance of this holy season, let’s renew a family tradition of gathering around a meal with family and friends and together lighting the appropriate candles and reciting the Advent prayer. With this in mind, we are asking interested families to purchase a family advent wreath that includes candles for $5.00. Look for sample wreaths on display now in the back of each church and fill out the order form below, detach and place in the collection basket.

Tim light a memorial candle held by Christine Rankin during the remembrance ceremony, part of the All Souls’ Day Mass celebrated by the Bishop for our Partner Parishes on Nov. 2 at The Historic Church of St. Peter. Bishop Malesic sprinkles Holy Water as he blesses the graves surrounding the church during the outside service prior to Mass. The choir sang songs of remembrance and praise during both the outdoor and indoor services. Sixty-six deceased loved ones were remembered at the remembrance ceremony. Family and friends received a memorial candle with their loved one’s name to keep.
