scourging, the cohort of soldiers took him into the praetorium with the intention of further humiliating him. They actually honored him in an ironic way. A cloak of royal purple was placed on his shoulders. Then the soldiers weaved a crown for him: a crown, as of thorns, and pressed it forcefully into his scalp. They then took a reed and used it to beat upon the crown so that the thorns dug more deeply, more painfully into his skull. To complete their mockery, they handed him the reed as if it were a royal scepter and they fell down before him in mock homage, proclaiming him as "the King of the Jews." Pilate attempted to have Jesus released but the crowd cried out to crucify him. Pilate, fearful of the Jews, turned him over to them to be crucified. However, he had the inscription placed above him on the cross: "This is the King of the Jews." So in this ironic sense, everyone acknowledged him as "king" but, in reality, they only sought to humiliate and degrade him. Through all of this, he offered no resistance; he presented his body as a sacrificial offering on our behalf. Is it possible for us, in our humanity, limited as we are, caught up in our daily activities and the complexities of life, to take this lesson to heart and truly recognize Christ as our King? I propose we can if we think about the nature of our loving God and his plan for our salvation. Jesus came in order that we might have life! The Father’s plan for our salvation included the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s Incarnation, Passion, Cross, Death and Resurrection. The passage from St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians reflects this truth: “He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn of the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.” God’s love for us, his creation, is so beyond our human understanding. He gives us complete freedom to choose for God or separation from him by exercising our free will. The Father gave us his son as an offering in order that we might be restored to relationship with God. Jesus said yes to his Father’s plan as our “Servant-Leader.” He died so that we might have life. He gave us this model of sacrificial love in order that by following him we will share in the eternal promises of the Father. He is indeed the “head of our body, the church.” We proclaim him King and Lord each Sunday as we gather once again to share as a faith community in the Eucharistic Celebration, doing all as he commanded us “in memory of him.”
Advent Begins November 27th Advent is a wonderful time to increase commitment to our faith life. As appropriate to our personal journey we should use this holy season to restore, strengthen or begin a deeper faith life. We do this through daily prayer, fulfilling our Sunday obligation and, for some, by beginning the practice of attending daily Mass. Many people speak about having experienced a great benefit to their faith journey when they began the discipline of attending daily Mass. They speak of how the practice transformed the depth of their relationship with Jesus and brought increased joy and peace to their lives.

Advent Wreath Tradition
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is Nov. 27. In observance of this holy season, let’s renew a family tradition of gathering around a meal with family and friends and together lighting the appropriate candles and reciting the Advent prayer. With this in mind, we are asking interested families to purchase a family advent wreath that includes candles for $5.00. Look for sample wreaths on display now in the back of each church and fill out the order form below, detach and place in the collection basket.
Advent Wreath Order Form $5.00 donation for each wreath purchased Only 50 wreaths are being made this season _____Yes, I would like to renew the Advent Wreath Tradition with my family and purchase an Advent Wreath.

Anointing Mass to be Celebrated Nov. 26 at St. Cecilia
On Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10:00 a.m., the Partner Parishes of The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia will celebrate a Mass for the Anointing of the Sick. As we do each May and November, the Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia with a luncheon to follow immediately after in the parish social hall beneath the church. Fr. Tim and Fr. Alvin will anoint all parishioners who, because of advanced age or specific physical, emotional or spiritual difficulty, seek the healing and strength the Lord’s grace provides through this powerful sacrament. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick takes place during the Mass. It consists of three parts: the prayer of faith of the people, the laying-on of hands, and the anointing with oil. During the prayer of faith, the entire community prays for God’s help for our sick who are participating. The laying-on of hands recalls Jesus’ manner of healing. “They brought the sick with various diseases to him, and Jesus laid hands on every one of them and healed them.” (Luke 4:40) The anointing with oil signifies healing, strengthening and the presence of the Holy Spirit. On Holy Thursday, Bishop Malesic blessed these oils during the Chrism Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. They were then distributed to all of the diocese’s parishes. If you attended the Lord’s Supper celebration that evening, you witnessed the reception of our parishes’ blessed oils. The healings that occur in so many instances can be either physical, emotional or spiritual. Come take advantage of the wondrous gift of God’s healing love for His people in the midst of our parish family.
Bishop Malesic Celebrates All Souls’ Day Mass and Remembrance with our Parish Families
Sixty-six deceased loved ones were remembered at the remembrance ceremony. Family and friends received a memorial candle with their loved one’s name to keep. Bishop Edward Malesic and Fr. Tim light a memorial candle held by Christine Rankin during the remembrance ceremony, part of the All Souls’ Day Mass celebrated by the Bishop for our Partner Parishes on Nov. 2 at The Historic Church of St. Peter. At right, Bishop Malesic sprinkles Holy Water as he blesses the graves surrounding the church during the outside service prior to Mass. At left, Terry Sheehan and Tracy Zivkovich participate in the outdoor candlelight prayer service in the cemetery surrounding The Historic Church of St. Peter. Hundreds attended the All Souls’ Day Mass and remembrance ceremony for our departed loved ones of the Partner Parishes of The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia. At left, family members and friends gather at dusk to pray with Bishop Malesic and Fr. Tim for the repose of the souls of those who died during the past year.
