“By your perseverance you will secure your lives." Our readings throughout this month of November are leading us to the close of our liturgical year. The last Sunday of the month will be the first Sunday of Advent. We will hear readings that are apocalyptic in nature, that speak of the end times. Of course, we're all conscious that this journey of our lifetime is limited. Our existence in this physical dimension, on this earthly plane, is relatively short in every respect. Ultimately, we all will come before the Lord either at the end of time or at the time of our death. The teaching from Luke’s Gospel this Sunday is addressed by Jesus to those who were gathered with him in Jerusalem. The last several Sundays, Luke’s Gospel readings have presented the teachings Jesus shared as he traveled toward Jerusalem. He had completed his public ministry in Galilee and traveled to Jerusalem in order that he might fulfill what his Father had asked which, of course, would include being handed over to the Jews, suffering his Passion, Cross and death. The majority of the Jewish people, who were the Chosen People to whom the Messiah would come, failed to recognize him and had refused, for the most part, to accept him. The apocalyptic prophesies about Jerusalem and the Temple’s destruction that would come would be fulfilled in the lifetime of the inhabitants within 40 years of our Lord's death. When the Jews rose up against the power of Rome, Roman legions would come and lay siege to Jerusalem. Its armies would destroy the city and tear down the Temple, that Temple which was so important to the identity, to the very nature, of the Jewish state. It was their home; it was their security. As noted in the Gospels, it had taken 46 years to build the Temple. However, following the Roman attack, the only thing that remains today is the "Wailing Wall" where faithful Jews go with their written prayer petitions to lodge them between the chinks in the mortar of the wall. This has become an accepted way to offer up their petitions to the Lord. The prophecy about "even being handed over by your parents, your brothers, relatives and friends" would also come true, because the Jews were frustrated by those who were followers of Christ, followers of the Way, the Christians, who refused to assist the Jews in defending Jerusalem against the Romans. The failure to assist and the new teachings of Jesus caused the Jews to feel that the Christians were diluting the Jewish Faith. As a result they would cast Christians out of the synagogues and turned them over to the Roman authorities. The division between the Faithful Jews and early Christians would begin several hundred years of very serious persecution of the followers of Christ. In many instances their punishment would cost them their property, sometimes their freedom, for others even their lives. The Lord's prophecies all came true. However, Jesus’ truth was that he would be with us: that if we persevere, we will secure our lives. Even the Prophet Malachi, who utters a threatening prophecy in our First Reading, says at the end: "Those who believe, those who follow the Lord, for them, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays." History is filled with examples of how the Lord and his providential hand has saved his faithful people against all odds. I’ve spoken several times in homilies about the video called, "Nine Days That Changed the World." It is a documentary about the Holy Father, John Paul II, upon returning to Poland following his election as pope in 1978. The following year, he returned to Poland and so powerfully inspired the people with the understanding that the Lord was with them that he laid the groundwork for the destruction of the Communist grip on Eastern Europe. It culminated with the tearing down of the Berlin Wall as one Communist regime after another fell. We can recall Hitler, the Nazis and the axis powers that attempted to dominate the world. To the people who lived there, who were subjected to the Holocaust, it seemed like the end was upon them. But each time, the Lord raised up champions, people of good heart who lived by the principles and values that were established by the Lord, and the light of justice was restored in our world. We can look at our own country. Society is threatened by a secular culture that has lost its way, "a culture of death," as I like to refer to it. Yet, the Lord will continue to sustain us. However, we must persevere in our faith; in order to overcome the challenges we face, we must believe in Jesus and follow his commands by living them out, day in and day out. We are asked to testify to him, to witness to the truth of the Gospel: the Gospel of Life, the Judeo-Christian principles and values that our nation was founded upon. Jesus has not deserted us. He made us members of his Mystical Body. All of us are united in him. We are joined to one another as members of the Body of Christ. This is true concerning those who have gone before us who are in heaven and those in Purgatory who are attaining the perfection they were called to in order to enter the Lord’s presence eternally. We pray for one another; we ask for their intercession. Let us persevere, continuing to strive for what we are called to, which is to share that eternal life with the Lord. As we focus this month on the realities of life and death, eternal salvation or damnation, let us turn to the Lord. Let us open our hearts and allow the light of his love to penetrate, to strengthen, to nurture and renew our faith, our trust. We will then become lights for one another, an empathetic voice, a healing hand that touches those who are in need. For indeed, Christ’s love will penetrate any darkness. His light must shine through us. We are his hands and his feet, his voice here on this earth. We thank him for the graces that he gives us to meet and overcome every challenge we encounter. We relish Jesus’ love that enables us to persevere when uncertain and to attain the salvation we are called to with thanksgiving.

Advent Wreath Tradition
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is Nov. 27. In observance of this holy season, let’s renew a family tradition of gathering around a meal with family and friends and together lighting the appropriate candles and reciting the Advent prayer. With this in mind, we are asking interested families to purchase a family advent wreath that includes candles for $5.00. Look for sample wreaths on display now in the back of each church and fill out the order form below, detach and place in the collection basket.

The Solemnity of Christ the King Closes Jubilee Year of Mercy Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016 We celebrate an afternoon of adoration, formal Vespers and the new movie, “The Face of Mercy” Come and join us for prayer and devotions at The Historic Church of St. Peter “The Face of Mercy” begins at 12:30 p.m. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament 2:00 pm. followed by formal Vespers and Benediction 4:00 p.m.
This day coincides with official closure of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Jubilee Year of Mercy began Dec. 8, 2015, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will end on the feast of Christ the King. Announcing his plan, Pope Francis said, “I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time.”
Everyone is invited to attend! Anointing Mass to be Celebrated Nov. 26 at St. Cecilia
On Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10:00 a.m., the Partner Parishes of The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia will celebrate a Mass for the Anointing of the Sick. As we do each May and November, the Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia with a luncheon to follow immediately after in the parish social hall beneath the church. Fr. Tim and Fr. Alvin will anoint all parishioners who, because of advanced age or specific physical, emotional or spiritual difficulty, seek the healing and strength the Lord’s grace provides through this powerful sacrament. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick takes place during the Mass. It consists of three parts: the prayer of faith of the people, the laying-on of hands, and the anointing with oil. During the prayer of faith, the entire community prays for God’s help for our sick who are participating. The laying-on of hands recalls Jesus’ manner of healing. “They brought the sick with various diseases to him, and Jesus laid hands on every one of them and healed them.” (Luke 4:40) The anointing with oil signifies healing, strengthening and the presence of the Holy Spirit. On Holy Thursday, Bishop Malesic blessed these oils during the Chrism Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. They were then distributed to all of the diocese’s parishes. If you attended the Lord’s Supper celebration that evening, you witnessed the reception of our parishes’ blessed oils. The healings that occur in so many instances can be either physical, emotional or spiritual. Come take advantage of the wondrous gift of God’s healing love for His people in the midst of our parish family.
