When Jesus asked, “Who do people say that I am?”, Peter responded, "You are the Christ". "Christ”, a Greek word; "Messiah", a Hebrew word. Both mean "the Anointed One." Jesus is the Anointed One. He was the long-expected Messiah. Unfortunately, Peter and the other Apostles viewed their role as His disciples as leading to honor and recognition when Jesus established his Kingdom. They hoped to be seated at his right and left. They believed Israel’s glory would be restored. It would be like the days of David and Solomon, not like the humiliation they had suffered when they were subjugated by the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans. Israel lived as a subjugated people; in effect as slaves. They thought the Messiah would exercise power and authority. In their minds, Jesus’ throne would entail healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind and raising the dead. They thought Jesus would feed the multitudes as he had with bread and fish. He could walk on water; his power would direct nature and, as necessary, cause nature to change course. However, the Lord said to Peter, and ultimately to us: You are thinking as humans do, not as God does. If you follow me, you will pick up your cross, forget yourself, and follow the path that I walk. We know that Jesus’ path entailed the cross which is something that we all have a difficult time embracing. If Peter and the other Apostles gave Jesus’ words any thought, they would have remembered the words of Isaiah. Four times in his prophetic passages, Isaiah spoke of a "suffering servant". We heard his words today, that the Lord God had opened his ears that he might hear and he had not rebelled. He had not turned away, but gave his back to those who beat him, his cheeks to those who plucked his beard. His face he did not shield from buffets or spitting, but recognized that the Lord his God was his help. Therefore, he was not disgraced, but instead, set his face like flint, knowing that he would not be put to shame. There are many examples we could enumerate. For the past sev-

eral Sundays I've mentioned the large number of funerals we’ve had in our parishes since my arrival. Some have been for elderly members of the parish, as much as 97 years old when the Lord called them home; always a painful loss but natural in the course of our human condition. Some were very active, just recently retired, working in the community, on their farm, etc., enjoying their retirement in their 60s or 70s. We often wonder why the Lord didn’t allow them to enjoy the fruits of their life- long labor more fully. Others were as young as 22 years old; a total shock to their family who had no indication that something like this would happen. The suffering is so intense. How can there be such suffering if we have a loving God? Yet, indeed we do, and he would heal our suffering if we would permit him. We encounter varying and complex crosses in our journey to the Lord : death of a loved one; a terrible illness that afflicts us or a member of our family for whom we are care-givers; spouses who don’t live out the commitments they made, who don’t respect us, don’t treat us as an equal or affirm us; a job that we don’t like. Yet we recognize that if we don’t have that job or put up with that difficult spouse, we won’t be able to support our families. Jesus has said to us, “You who are my disciples, as you carry these crosses, if you cling to me, the Lord God will be your help; you will be not disgraced. So we set our faces like flint, knowing that we shall not be put to shame. For indeed, the Lord embraces us when we enter into our daily prayer with him and he strengthens us as we live the sacramental life of the church, attending Mass each Sunday. However, that's hard to believe if in the midst of the day-to-day suffering, we can't comprehend emerging from our current darkness or sorrow, and even on occasion, depression that overcomes us. Yet, the Lord is my Light; he promises to sustain and enable me. Our Reading today from St. James is a powerful statement about our Faith, and he's speaking about how our Faith finds expression through the works that we do: that if we have a brother or a sister (a spouse or our children, somebody in the workplace) who has no food

or source of strength, we say to them, "Go in peace, keep warm and eat well", but do not provide for them in their necessities, what good is it? If my spouse is sorrowing, and I don't reach out in an effort to be the healing hands of Jesus or to say words which enable them to experience the love of God through me and my presence, according to St. James, I’ve, in effect, sent them on their way without the necessities of life. If I know someone as a friend or in the workplace but I'm not willing to be there for them in their hour of need saying "God bless you", and just walk away, St. James says, "You're not living out your Faith. You show me your works, and I'll show you the Faith that animates those works." In order to respond to Jesus’ directive to forget ourselves, pick up our cross and follow him, we must consider participating in ministry as we live out our Faith. Not only do we accomplish what the Lord asks us to do but we help heal ourselves by ministering to the needs of others. In our family, our faith community, our workplace, our schools, as we minister we pick up that cross, forget ourselves, and we follow him. It's a hard formula. Nobody said it would be easy. But when we do it, when we embrace that cross, the Lord will sustain us. He'll manifest his presence in our life each day so that we experience that peace and joy that comes from no other source and that cannot be taken from us. We must consider the cross; not always seek to avoid it. As we progress on this journey, we try to be more Christ-like in every way. In our human experience we know ultimately we will begin to lose the gifts we've been given. The Lord slowly takes them from us. Each of us will someday become dependent on another for care, and Christ says, to both the person losing those gifts who humbly accepts the care, and for the person who provides it, "You are my sons and daughters; you are my hands and feet. You're my voice with one another. You are giving yourself away in order that another might have life through you. "
