A back-to-school thought:

In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson. — Tom Bodett

Our Readings this Sunday, particularly those from Ezekiel and from Matthew's Gospel, are about fraternal correction. We are instructed to speak to the individual who's gone off course, who is sinning about his failure. We are to do so in a respectful way. Our purpose should be to achieve healing and reconciliation. We are always to speak the truth to those we correct, but we speak our truth in a Christ-like way. Our objective is to respect the other as we strive to heal and to reconcile relationships. That's our objective. But it's not always easy. I'd like to share an account with you concerning Pope St. Gregory the Great. His feast day is celebrated on Sept. 3; however, since it fell on a Sunday this year, we did not have his memorial. He was the Pope from 590 until 604. It was of course a long time ago, but his humility and approach to correcting others is a valuable lesson. Pope Gregory is called "the Great" for many reasons. One reason was his great humility, even though he was chosen for Shepherd of our Church. There have been only three popes called “Great.” He was brilliant and very dedicated to the service of God. Many of his writings are still available today. His homilies and commentaries are extraordinary. We still have the homily he preached on today’s passage from Ezekiel about the prophet being designated by the Lord a watchman on behalf of the people of Israel during the Babylonian exile. He starts by saying: "Son of Man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the House of Israel." Then he says, "Note that Ezekiel, whom the Lord sent to preach his Word, is described as a watchman." Now, a watchman always takes up his position on a height so he can see whatever approaches from a distance. Likewise, whoever is appointed as a watchman for the people should live a life on the heights so that he can help them by taking a wide view of their circumstances. If I live my life on the heights, I'm visible; therefore, I model the behavior I'm calling others to, and that is particularly true when conducting fraternal correction. Pope St. Gregory speaks with great humility when he says, "These words are hard for me to utter for, when I speak, it is myself that I am reproaching." (He doesn't think he's living out what the Lord is calling Ezekiel and each of us as disciples to do.) He said, "I do not preach as I should, nor does my life follow the principles I preach so inadequately about. I do not deny that I am guilty. I see my fear, my uncertainty and my negligence. Perhaps the very recognition of my failure will win pardon for me from my sympathetic judge, Jesus Christ." Such humility from Pope Gregory–called “the Great.” Pope St. Gregory thought that he was inadequate, a failure in view of his own life, the work he accomplished on behalf of the Lord, the Church and all those he served. If so, we must recognize that our own efforts will not always be successful. We know how difficult it is from personal experience when we have a family member, someone in our workplace, perhaps even a supervisor, a boss, who needs fraternal correction. Some of our families have great difficulties. Perhaps one of the members, maybe a spouse, has an addiction. It could be drugs, alcohol or even pornography. Maybe they're a workaholic. Maybe they're abusing other members of the family. So, our job, as the healthy one, is to address the issue. We know how difficult it can be to correct a member of the family. However, if we allow it to go on without correction, in effect, we enable the other person to live that way. All in the family may recognize the problem but, fearful of offending, we permit the issue to fester. However, what the Lord is asking us to do is to directly address the issues that exist. Our purpose is to heal, to reconcile, but to do so in a respectful way. When I speak in a Christ-like way, what that means is: not that I sugar-coat everything; it means that I speak the truth, but I do it with the intent—not of throwing little darts that inflict pain so they'll know that I'm serious and I get their attention—but I do it in a way that will bridge the division, overcome the separation and reconcile those involved. It's not easy. I often think of times in the confessional when someone has spoken of their difficulties with their spouse, a child, or whomever. When I advise them about speaking the truth by directly addressing the difficulty, I preface my suggestion by saying: "It’s unusual if it works the first time; it probably won't work even the tenth time, but if I make that effort, it becomes a part of who I am in relation to the person suffering.” I must ask and then allow the Lord to inform me of the proper words to speak his truth. If you seek his guidance, you'll be amazed. You'll say to yourself: “Where did that wisdom come from? Certainly not from me. But because I'm living in relationship with my God, he has enabled me.” If I don't talk in a Christ-like way, I typically express emotions and express all my human weaknesses. In my frustration I respond with thoughts and words of this nature: "They did it again; they hurt me; they hurt other members of the family.” I respond by allowing my anger, my frustration at the unfairness of the situation to explode. But if I reason and talk, the Lord will inform me; he'll give me the words to speak the truth, the words of reconciliation. The reality is that some people, particularly those subject to an addiction or other similar difficulty, are not easy to heal. We know addiction creates such a major problem in the household that the entire family can become dysfunctional. Such addictions can impact one generation after another. In those circumstances, we must look for help. We need to go outside the family, perhaps to members of the church, or somebody who is a professional. We live in a different world than the Lord did 2,000 years ago when everybody in Israel was a member of the Jewish Faith, and they could respond in the way Jesus described. It was a tenet of their faith. If we decide to get professional help, we must ask the individual who is the subject of concern to be open to assistance, but do so in a Christ-like way, trying to solve the problem. The Lord is asking us to do so: to be courageous, to speak with respect, and thereby find the necessary healing and achieve reconciliation.

Catholic Cemetery Plots Available As members of the Catholic Church, we learn by faith to live our lives in a way that plans for the final resting of our immortal souls in heaven with God our Father. But as members of the human race, we may find it difficult to plan ahead for the final resting of our mortal bodies here on earth. Here in the Brownsville area, there are three cemeteries, all located along Route 40 within a few miles of one another. Two are Catholic, St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s Cemeteries. The third is owned by a corporation.

For ease of planning your final arrangements, all have burial plots available. St. Peter’s/St. Mary’s Lot price: $ Open/close (Mon.-Sat.):

Cal U Students to Map Cemetery At Historic Church of St. Peter Beginning this week, several students from the Department of Earth Sciences at California University of Pennsylvania will be mapping out a grid of the cemetery surrounding The Historic Church of St. Peter. Oftentimes, people will contact our church office in search of information about deceased ancestors as they conduct genealogical studies of their families. This grid will enable us to pinpoint all gravesites in the cemetery and have records of nearly all of our deceased parishioners buried there. Photo courtesy of Larry Franks III

Our proposed Parish Activity Center will enhance our ministries and services for all our parishioners, from our youth to our seniors. Everyone recognizes the importance of our faith community gathering for social events and participating together in our ministries to strengthen the parish. In conjunction with our planning, we currently are conducting a study in preparation for a significant capital campaign. Today, you can assist us with this very important process by completing an In-Pew Survey. We would like to solicit your feedback concerning our project. By completing a survey, you will be providing us with crucial feedback and allow us to best meet the needs of our parishioners. There are no right or wrong answers. We simply ask for you to be as honest as possible. Surveys can be found in each pew. Everyone should fill out a survey. The ushers will come down the aisle to pick up these forms during Mass. PLEASE REMEMBER — The success of this effort depends on all of our parishioners working together. We need your help and prayers in order to make our campaign the success we are all praying for.

Several trips to the Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood Clinic are scheduled during the Fall 2017 40 Days for Life campaign. The schedule below reflects the actual times we’ll be at the clinic. Pickup times vary for different days. Please monitor this schedule or contact Fr. Tim, 724-785-7781, for more information. Departure times from the parking lot of The Historic Church of St. Peter in Brownsville will be Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 7:00 a.m.
