“He has done all things well", was what the people said when witnessing Jesus healing the man who was deaf and dumb. The gift of hearing and the ability to speak that was restored to the man was a wonderful sign of healing during Jesus' public ministry. However, the Lord’s public ministry was not intended, per se, only to be one of healing. If so, Jesus would have healed everyone. Nor does he heal everyone today. Instead, it was to manifest the presence of the Father in the person of Jesus Christ. Today’s First Reading was a prophetic utterance by Isaiah. He begins by saying “to those whose hearts are frightened” because the people of Israel were frightened. Isaiah lived roughly 700 years before the Lord's birth. The Northern Kingdom was being threatened by the Assyrians who intimidated them and eventually conquered the 10 Northern Tribes, taking the inhabitants into exile. We're frightened on occasion ourselves, aren't we? Perhaps there's trouble between spouses, between Mom and Dad, or maybe I've been left alone; my spouse is deceased. Perhaps there's a financial crisis in the workplace when I thought I had a secure job, or a child in the family has gone off course, is disrespectful or has gotten into trouble. We're concerned; we're frightened at what the outcome might be. And the Lord says through Isaiah, "Say to those whose hearts are frightened: be strong, fear not. Here is your God; he comes with vindication, with divine recompense. He comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared. Then will the lame leap like a stag; the tongue of the mute will sing. " Isa. 35:3-7a The Lord healed during his public ministry, but those gifts of healing, the miraculous work of feeding the multitudes, were to teach and display that he is God so that the people might understand that Isaiah’s and the others’ prophecies were being fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who is the fullness, the very revelation of the Father's plan for our salvation. Do you remember when Jesus went

to the Jordan and John baptized him? Then he went to Nazareth. On the Sabbath he went into the synagogue, and they gave him a scroll to read. The scroll he received was also from Isaiah, and he read, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. " Luke 4:18-19 Once again, all of the prophetic utterances from the Scriptures were to be fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. You remember when John the Baptist criticized Herod the King and was thrown into the dungeon. John's disciples came; they fed him, they took care of him, and they related to him the amazing stories concerning Jesus: about his public ministry, the healings, how boldly he was proclaiming the Good News, particularly to the poor. So, John asked his disciples to go question Jesus on his behalf. When they came to Jesus, they said to him: "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" Jesus said to them in reply: "Go and tell John what you have heard and what you have seen: the blind regain their sight; the lame walk; lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the Good News proclaimed to them. Blessed is the man who takes no offense at me. " cf. Matt. 11 :3-6 Yes, Jesus was raising the dead, but Lazarus would die. He was healing all those he encountered who were blind, who had hearing difficulties or impediments in their speech. But the point is: it was supposed to be a spiritual experience of the truth of God's love for us: that Jesus came to manifest the Father’s plan for our salvation. An extraordinary revelation but think of what the man in today' s Gospel had to do when his hearing was restored. That night when he went to bed, he heard the crickets and the night creatures outside. He had to determine what that sound was. He had never heard it before. When he woke up, there was a mourning dove. What was that sound? When he encountered his loved ones, sometimes in their voice there was an indication of anger, or

maybe fear, or love, or concern. He had to learn all of those things. He engaged, like us on a journey of a lifetime as we learn to encounter the truth of Jesus Christ and to respond to that truth. A while back I read a news article about a test they had done to see how much people really do listen, and how attentive they are to what's going on around them. They hired one of the world's most renowned violinists. The gentleman had a four million-dollar Stradivarius violin. They took him into a metro station of the D.C. subway. I worked in D.C. for eleven years, and I remember that many times there would be panhandlers who would put down a little container and play music with whatever instrument they had, hoping to receive some money. The gentleman, a concert violinist, who had played with every symphony orchestra of any substance around the world, stood in the station, playing his Stradivarius. They put a camera on him to see what would happen. Of the approximately eleven hundred people who walked by, seven stopped and listened. He received $32.00 in his little container. But just think. If that same group of people, those eleven hundred individuals, realized who he was and that he was playing that night with a local symphony orchestra at the Kennedy Center, they would pay hundreds of dollars to sit in that box. They would be dressed to the nines and looking their best. They'd be there with all the right people who are able to appreciate the beauty of his music and its majesty. If we put what St. James said in the Second Reading in today’s context, we would understand the 1100 individuals’ focus. They were going about the work in which they engaged, the complexity of their day. "I have to hurry; I have to make it on time." But if they were seated near the symphony orchestra, they would focus on the beauty of the concert hall, the fact they were with the “right kind” of people, and how well they personally presented themselves. But St. James says, "You're not to be impressed just because someone's attractive, influential or has a lot of money. You're to focus on the reality of Jesus Christ in each person that you encounter.
