The Historic Church of St. Peter

Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine Marian Vigliotti by Family

Do you remember this quote from Matthew’s Gospel from last Sunday’s Mass? Peter had proclaimed that Jesus was the “Christ, the Son of the Living God”. Then Jesus said, “…You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." So, the Lord lifted Peter on high. He would be that rock, that foundation for the Church, this institution that has survived for 2,000 years and gives the Church authority to establish dogmas, to proclaim scripture and to teach the commandments. It was a powerful expression of Peter being honored. But in today’s passage, within just a couple of verses, Jesus says to him, "Get behind me, Satan; you're thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Isn't that true for most of us? We’ll do everything in our power to avoid crosses in this lifetime: whether they entail physical suffering from an injury that we've experienced, financial setbacks, or personal problems in the family. Our response is, “No thanks, Lord.” Please take them away; maybe somebody else would handle the suffering better. But Jesus says in scripture, "Whoever wishes to follow me, to be my disciple, must deny himself, pick up his cross and follow me." The question is, how do we bring these two contrary human realities into perspective? The Lord is saying, "Embrace the difficulties you encounter; unite them with my suffering. Make them redemptive." Yet we try to avoid them. The Lord is not saying, "If you're sick or have been injured, do not go to a doctor and get the necessary medication,” or “Don’t have the procedure done that will relieve your suffering." He's saying, “Stay in relationship with me through daily prayer. You will come to understand my love for you is beyond your comprehension. You're being formed in this lifetime to serve me and formation sometimes includes suffering." Sirach, one of the authors of a Book of Wisdom from scripture, said, "If you come to serve the Lord, be prepared for persecution." We, as members of the church, strive always to serve the Lord; as such, we should be prepared for persecution. For indeed, as the Lord prophesied, today Christians are being severely persecuted. We must look to the Cross. We, as Catholics, keep Jesus' corpus, his body, on the cross to be a reminder of what sacrificial love sometimes requires. It can be so difficult, because serving requires loving others when we don’t approve of their lifestyle; serving entails loving others when we've been offended. We know that loving the other when that individual has intentionally hurt us is hard to do. We sometimes forget that Jesus came to die, not for the good people, but for sinners. Now, that's hard to fathom: that his love is so broad and so deep that he would actually die so that sinners would be healed, so that they would share with him as co-heirs, the eternal promises of the Father. But, indeed, that is the truth; that was his purpose, and we are all the beneficiaries of this immense love. All of us are sinners. Every one of us has gone off course, has lost our way at one time or another. It's difficult, most particularly in the context of the suffering we experience, to say, "Well, Lord, I'm not happy about it, but I understand, I accept this cross and I unite my suffering with you in order that it be redemptive." In our First Reading from Jeremiah, he said to the Lord, "You duped me." The actual phrase in Hebrew was, "You seduced me!" The Lord insisted Jeremiah be his prophet. He provided many and varied gifts to him so that he could proclaim God’s truth. The Father also gave him great consolation in his prayer, drew him into a very deep, intimate relationship with him. Jeremiah was seduced by the wonder of experiencing a profound relationship with God and the great gifts that he received from the Lord. However, when he fulfilled the work of his vocation as a prophet, he encountered great opposition and persecution. He cried out, "I'm an object of laughter; people mock me. Violence and outrage is my message. I say to myself, I will not mention him (God), I will speak his name no more. But then it becomes like a fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in. I cannot endure it.” Jeremiah recognized that dichotomy: that the Lord had blessed him inordinately, had made him "a fortified city, a pillar of brass, a wall of bronze” to stand up against all of the opposition he would encounter. However, the suffering he encountered was intense. St. Paul speaks to this issue in his letter to the Romans; he says: "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed… that you may discern what is the will of God.” On the other hand, this secular age tells us it's all about pleasure. You're number one. You should seek pleasure; gather many material things to yourself, become wealthy. We are encouraged to position ourselves in order to be recognized, to exercise power and authority. But the Lord is saying, “No, it's about the cross. If you would be my disciple, you must pick up your cross and follow me.” Suffering in this life is a reality. We all know it; we've all experienced it. But the love of God that goes beyond human comprehension, and the joy and the peace that belongs to those who are in a deep relationship with him, is a reality that is stronger than death, more powerful then hell. Let us constantly turn to Our Lord Jesus in our time of need, and ask him to pour forth the abundant graces of his love into our hearts, so that we, too, might be transformed, so that we, united with him, can encounter and overcome every difficulty in our lives.

Meet Our 2017-2018 Faith Formation Teachers!

This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on Sept. 17, 2017. The 2017 theme will be "Living as Missionary Disciples." Those whom the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Faith Formation classes begin next weekend, so register your child NOW. Remember the importance of religious education for your child today as a basis for his or her lifelong spiritual foundation!

Please join us as we meet and welcome our Partner Parishes Faith Formation teachers for the 2017-2018 class year: Nikki Harvey — Faith Formation Director I am excited to take on the director's position for Faith Formation this year. I have been in the preschoolers room at Faith Formation these last three years. For the past 13 years I have taught American History at Brownsville Area Middle School. I am the mother of four children: Sadie, 12; Lacie, 10; Ty, 7; and Wyatt, 5. I look forward to working with the children of our Partner Parishes families.

Patty Craig I received my BS in Social Work and my MS in Community/Agency Counseling from Cal U. In August 2016, I was certified as a catechist in Level 1 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. I recently completed the Echoes of Faith on-line course for Basic Certification as a catechist through the Diocese of Greensburg. I look forward to working with the 3- to 6-year-olds in the atrium (our special learning environment) and hope that I can spark in them the desire to know and to love Jesus that I always experience when I am in the atrium. I’ve been teaching Faith Formation for 2+ years.

Ninette Stowe I moved to the Brownsville area in 2003 with my husband Tim. The greatest part of my being: my son Dylan,11, and my daughter Madison, 9. I work for BASD as a teacher's aide. My goal in life is to be a good wife, mother, friend and, most importantly, a good Christian. This is my second year as a Faith Formation teacher.

Meaghan Clister I am a lifelong member of The Historic Church of St. Peter. I live in Brownsville with my husband Ron and two children, Luke and Anna. I am the Director of the Internship Center at California University of Pennsylvania and have been at the University for 24 years. I enjoy working with students and preparing them for successful internship experiences. In my free time I enjoy baking, reading and watching my kids play soccer. I am excited to begin my second year teaching Faith Formation classes and sharing the tenets of our faith with our parish youth.

Irene Franks I‘ve been married for 25 years with two children and grandchildren in Florida. I have a degree from Temple University, and also spent four years as a postulant and novice for the Sisters of St. Joseph and studied at Carlow College, Duquesne and St. Vincent’s. I’ve been teaching Faith Formation for The Historic Church of St. Peter for many years. My personal relationship with Jesus impels me to share his Good News.

Anthony and Vicki Gallo We have been married for 28 years and have two adult children, Julia and Katy. Tony is a cradle Catholic and Vicki is a convert of 21 years. We both have spent the past 21 years teaching Faith Formation: CCD, all the Sacraments, RCIA and youth group, and we’ve participated/facilitated Bible Studies. We both work in the radiology department of Canonsburg hospital as radiologic technologists, and Tony is also a Radiology Practioners Assistant. Vicki has just finished her studies and has achieved her BS degree in Health Care Administration. We are consultants for Ambit Energy, Monat Hair care and Asirvia, and are active in the care of the homeless and the Pro-life movement.

Rita Koffler I am a mother and wife, married 41years with three children and two grandchildren. I am a cashier and work produce at Foodland. I have been a Faith Formation teacher for 15 years at St. Hedwig’s and St. Cecilia’s. As children, my six siblings and I lived the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Because of that, one of my guiding principles comes from the quote that, “Service and witness to our faith are necessary for salvation.” Our God cannot be outdone in His generosity. We are meant to share our faith, our joy, and our love.

Kimberly Andria I moved to Brownsville about 10 years ago and have been blessed with two beautiful and ornery girls, Alivia, 9, and Zoey, 6. I graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors in Social Work in 2003 and a Masters in Social Work in 2005. I became an Incredible Years parent educator through Fayette County Head Start in 2010 and was licensed as a Behavioral Specialist in 2013. I am currently a Medical Social Worker at Medi Home Hospice and a Behavior Specialist at Connellsville Counseling and Psychological Services. My journey as a faith formation teacher began in high school. I was actively involved in my youth group at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, PA. I had the opportunity three years ago at The Historic Church of St. Peter to get involved again with the youth in the church by teaching Faith Formation. I have enjoyed working with the students and challenge myself to make Faith Formation an enjoyable experience for each student. Seeing their love for God grow each year is an opportunity I'm truly grateful for.

Gina Startare I am so excited to be a part of Faith Formation. I currently teach preschool and love all the triumphs and challenges it brings! I was also a CDD teacher at St. Agnes parish where I taught several different grades throughout the years. It is truly an honor to be teaching the first grade class this year and I look forward to working with parents to help build their children's Catholic faith.

Rose Comport I am the proud mom of Tiffany, Tabitha, Shane, Samantha and David, and “Gigi” of Arianna and Angelina. I work at Fayette County Community Action WIC (Women, Infants and Children). I have been a lector at The Historic Church of St. Peter for 12 years. I have taught third grade Faith Formation for three years. I’ve been volunteering for the Brownsville Parent Advisory Council and currently serve as vice chairperson. I love to help others and to feel like I’m making a difference.
