Society of Catholic Women (SCW) will be having a meeting on Wed. Sept. 5, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. located at Cross keys.
We have heard of the traditions, the wonderful rituals of the Jewish people. In the Catholic rituals we have retained some aspects of the Jewish traditions which help draw us more deeply and more fully into relationship with the Lord. However, this week we focus on how the Pharisees became obsessed about living those rituals and rules perfectly that they lost sight of the “spirit” of the law. We often speak about how the commandments are all distilled down to two: that we love God above all things and our neighbors as ourselves. As St. James said, as he criticized those who focus more on being hearers of the Word instead of doers of the Word, we must take these commandments to heart and live them out as fully as we are able. You hear the Word each week at Mass and receive the graces shared in the Eucharist. These gifts should impel us to go forth with the love of God being made manifest through our serving, sharing and building up the body of Christ. These truths are so important for us to understand. In our first reading, Moses was instructing the people. He had received the commandments on Mt. Sinai, shared them with the people Israel and swore them to fulfilling the covenant. He established the Mosaic Code which consisted of 613 rules that were based on the commandments and God’s instruction for the people’s welfare. The Mosaic code and individual rules were specific. They were intended to ensure the people’s survival while in the desert. The people sojourned together for forty years prior to entering the Promise Land. It was necessary for their survival to have a code to live in relationship with one another and the elements of the desert they encountered. They, of course, didn't have access to services that we do in the modern times. The people relied entirely on God and the support of the community for survival. They closely observed and lived out the Mosaic Code until, after coming into the Promised Land, their prosperity caused them to look beyond their covenant with God. As St. James in his letter noted, we recognize the need not only to hear, but to live God’s law each day of our lives. This is true in the context of our
family, the members of our faith community, our workplace and throughout our world. We must commit to fully living out the Gospel and responding to what the Lord calls us to do. We all have heard God’s Word; we must, as fully as possible, be animated by living it in our relations with others. Our Lord was so critical of the Pharisees. He said: "The people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. In vain do they worship, teaching as doctrine human precepts." Unfortunately, in many ways we have succumbed to our secular culture that no longer supports the principles and values which directed our society for so many generations. As such, we must be focused on protecting our families from an electronic media which proposes morals and actions that do not comport with God’s law. The media is so pervasive and can be so vulgar in the images it projects into our homes we can be overwhelmed. Nonetheless the Lord is calling us to respond powerfully to the truth of the Gospel; loving God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. Unfortunately some of the traditions that previously bound people of faith together and reflected our beliefs to the broader world have faded away. Just a couple of examples we may remember are the May Crowning or when baseball players made the Sign of the Cross as they came to bat. These traditions have for the most part disappeared. However, we still dip our fingers into the holy water and bless ourselves. The question is do we realize that when we use holy water, we are renewing our commitment: to our baptismal commission? When we make the Sign of the Cross, we're invoking our Lord's crucifixion, his offering of himself on the Altar of the Cross on our behalf. Just some subtle reminders about living our faith in all circumstances of our lives. The Israelites, when they came into the Promised Land and achieved its relative prosperity forgot the essence of their faith. This has also happened to so many of our good Catholics. The churches are not nearly as filled as they once were, and our young people, in particular, are not present. This past week we celebrated the feast days of St. Monica and her son St. Augustine. St. Augustine is such a
powerful illustration of what prayer can accomplish for returning our children to the Catholic Faith. He was gifted intellectually, a powerful speaker and a wealthy attorney who never lost. He was a handsome man; people were drawn to him. He was well paid by those who sought the benefit of those gifts that he had received. He personally pursued pleasure and the material benefits of his success. He lived a dissolute life. For thirteen years he lived with a woman outside of marriage; they had a child. He sought only pleasure. His poor mother, Monica, prayed for over twenty years that he would be converted and, ultimately, he was. Reflecting upon his earlier life in his he speaks book, about how he lived, and he remembers how his conversion began. He said to the Lord in prayer, "Lord, make me chaste; make me holy, but not just yet!" He wanted to enjoy that life a little bit longer, or so he thought he was enjoying it. He speaks to the fact that he sought beauty and pleasure and the material things of this world, not recognizing fully that those things were all created for God. All things created are intended to give praise and glory to God, and we are to use them for that purpose. Augustine said that he sought those things and didn't recognize that they were created by God in order that He might be glorified. The saint spoke of the fact that God called him, shouting his name, but that he was not listening. Ultimately, he came to the realization that, indeed, the only peace and true joy that he would experience in this life was through a relationship with the Lord. He tasted the sweetness of God’s gifts in a new way. He valued them more fully; he craved them. He is quoted as saying, "Our souls were made for you, Lord, and they will not rest until they rest in you." That is certainly true for all of us. We need to recognize the fact that the Lord wants each of us to have a very deep, personal relationship with him. We accomplish that through our daily prayer and by living the sacramental life to which we're called. This will enable us to literally be his hands and feet here on earth, and to render justice, as we should, by living mercifully with one another as an expression of Christ's love.
