Our Deepest Sympathy

Our parish family mourns the loss of parishioner Helen Balas. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Our first reading from the Book of Kings about Elijah encountering the Lord on Mount Horeb (aka Mount Sinai) requires some context to understand the prophet’s great need to find solace in God. Elijah had fought against the Baals, the pagan gods, and against their priests. He had challenged the pagan priests to competition. If you remember the account, they each built an altar offering their sacrifices and invoking their gods to start the fire. The fire did not ignite for the pagan priests, but the moment that Elijah invoked Yahweh, the fire came down and consumed not only the sacrificial offering, but the altar of sacrifice itself, thus proving to the people of Israel gathered to observe that it was their Heavenly Father who was God and not the pagan deities. Yet King Ahaz, and particularly Queen Jezebel, continued in their effort to kill Elijah. Elijah thought that all he had done was for naught, that there was no purpose for his life. He thought the Lord was not with him so he considered just lying down to die. Yet the Lord directed him to go to Horeb, the mountain, the holy mountain of Sinai where Moses had received the commandments. When Elijah arrived, he heard that the Lord would reveal himself to him. His expectation was that the God of power and might would manifest himself in that blinding power of the wind that blew, in the earthquake which shook the mountain, or in the fire that consumed everything in its path. But no—God revealed himself in a whisper that Elijah could hardly hear. So it is with God in our lives. Our expectation, our vision, is normally quite narrow and relates to our own self-interest. It does not often understand and perceive that the Lord's vision encompasses all things and all people, that God’s plan takes each individual into account in order that his purpose is accomplished. The Lord would fulfill the prophecy he made through Elijah, but not as Elijah expected. Elijah failed to be open to the surprise that the Lord would bring into his life. By way of illustration, I'd like to share a story that I read recently. It was about a young man who was in the military. He was a very thoughtful young man, somewhat of an intellectual. He read a lot and was very interested in matters of the heart and of the brain. He happened to be in the local library shortly before his deployment to Iraq. While he was in the library, he felt particularly drawn to a book that seemed to reach out to him. In it he found a little piece of paper on page 75, and on that piece of paper was an e-mail address. He thought, "Well, anybody who would be interested in this same book might be somebody I'd like to correspond with." So he was deployed to Iraq, and he began to correspond with that individual. As it turns out, the person was a woman whose name was Sally. His name was Bryan. They corresponded and, over time, they opened their hearts, one to the other, and spoke about the things that were most dear and most important to them. They found that they were kindred spirits: "soul mates" you might call them. But whenever he would ask for a picture, she would not send one. When he would ask for personal information, like: How old are you? Where do you live? What's your last name? she would not provide it. So he began to think, "Well, perhaps this is someone who will correspond with me through e-mail, but really doesn't want to meet me. Maybe she's embarrassed by the way she looks, or maybe she's older. I don't know." She wouldn't tell him much. He was about to return home. His entire unit was coming back in the early days of Iraq. It was the early days of the war when large numbers of people would come to the airport to greet the soldiers as they disembarked from the plane. Sally wrote, "I'll be there. I'll have a yellow ribbon on my arm that has your name on it so you'll know who I am." He was excited with great anticipation of meeting Sally. When the soldiers arrived at the airport and he disembarked from the plane, a very attractive young lady came up to him and said, "Thank you for your service." She gave him a hug and began to engage him in conversation. He didn't notice a yellow ribbon on her arm, but immediately behind her was an older woman, and she had a yellow ribbon around her arm with the name "Bryan" on it. So he disengaged himself from the attractive young woman, and walked to the older woman, a little disappointed in heart and thought, "Well, perhaps I can never really, truly care for her in a physical sense, but we'll still be soul mates for life." And as he went up and introduced himself, "Hi, Sally, I'm Byran," the woman said, "This must be some kind of a joke because that young lady asked me to put this ribbon on my arm. No, I'm not Sally; she's Sally." Well, Bryan was ecstatic. He said, "Oh, my goodness!" Sally had a purpose. She wanted Bryan to care for her, about the depths of her feelings, where she was coming from in terms of her intimate thoughts. She sought a soul mate, not one focused on appearance. She saw Bryan’s willingness to forgo the potential of a young attractive woman for who he believed was Sally. Sally knew her appearance would not be the determinative factor and a detriment to their relationship. The point is that all of us in our lives must be open to surprise. Elijah had difficulty with it; we all do because, while we are people of faith, our faith can sometimes fade to be followed by doubt. We can all identify with our first shepherd, St. Peter, and his failures. We have a mountaintop experience, such as a great event in the family, a wedding, the grandchild born. We feel the Lord has manifested his presence in our life with some special communication. We are inspired, just as Peter was, to step out, to take a risk, based on our faith in the Lord. But we, like Peter, lose sight of the Lord. He looked about at the waves, felt that heavy wind blowing, and he began to doubt; he began to sink. We all do the same thing. We must remember the Lord is always with us and, while we do have doubts, we must continue to trust, to step out each day, one foot in front of the other, sharing a prayerful life, communing with our Lord, entering into this Eucharistic meal, the sacramental life so that we are continuing to grow in him, so that the faith that started as that little mustard seed continues to grow and expand until ultimately we are secure in our faith. For just as Elijah experienced many threats in his time—a culture that returned to the pagan gods, literally the power of that culture, the King and Queen seeking his life—we live in a culture that has turned away from the principles and the values that our Faith teaches. We must, in relationship with the Lord, develop that lifelong faith, that trust that will enable us to step out of the boat of our security. We need to go towards the Lord, recognizing that even though it won't always be the way we imagined, he will respond to our prayer. He will be there in our time of need, just as he was with Peter when he cried out, "Lord, save me."
