Christian Mothers Meeting Set for May 17
The Christian Mothers will meet in the St. Cecilia Social Hall at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018. New members are always welcome and encouraged to attend!
This is the Seventh Sunday of our Easter celebration which places us right in the midst: we're straddling the Ascension and Pentecost, the Lord's promise of sending forth his Advocate, the Holy Spirit. If you remember, as the Lord ascended into heaven, he said, "Remain in the city until my Spirit, the Paraclete, comes upon you." Next Sunday, when we celebrate Pentecost and the presence of the Holy Spirit, it will be a glorious festival indeed. I'm going to provide an overview of what the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit is about. If you remember, from Ash Wednesday through Pentecost we have a special season of preparation, then rejoicing in the gift of our Resurrection in Christ. During the beginning of Lent, the first five weeks or so, we read from the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke). The purpose of those Readings was to cause compunction, to make us to realize how often, in our limited human nature, we do fail. So we make our vows: "I'll fast; I'll pray more. I'll be more charitable throughout Lent." And we truly try but, in our humanity, after a difficult day and the general complexities of life, we don't fulfill those commitments. The Church in its wisdom recognizes this reality. Every member of the Church is fully human. We fail, fall and sin. The leaders of the church recognize this because they do the same. The personal compunction we experience is intended to increase our awareness of the extraordinary love of our God for us. We are to remember that, even in our sinfulness, the Father sends his Son to suffer so that we might have life in him. During the last couple of weeks of Lent, the Church presents John's Gospel. During Holy Week, at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, there's that beautiful passage in which the Lord puts on an apron, takes a basin of water, and goes around and washes the feet of all the Apostles. Afterwards, he says, "You call me Master, and well you should, for indeed I am. But what I've done for you, you must do for one another." So, there's the teaching about literally humbling ourselves before one another, giving ourselves away. Then, of course, comes Good Friday, when we celebrate the Lord's Passion, and then Easter, the celebration of his Resurrection: all intended to strike deeply into our hearts this reality of the love of God made manifest, made incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ, presented through John’s Gospel. John, more than any of the other Evangelists, presents Jesus as the transcendent son of God. He makes us see clearly that the Father’s plan for our salvation entailed Jesus’ passion, cross and death.
Sometimes we're engaged and observe this reality; other times we're not. We're so caught up in whatever the challenges are in our life that we can fail to truly enter into the high holy days of the Church. However, we relive the celebrations every year with the thought that, at some point, the wonder and beauty of God’s love for us will transform our lives. At some point, we're going to make that transition by developing a deeper understanding of what Jesus accomplished on our behalf. We do know his crucifixion was to teach us about sacrificial love that we're called to live out as fully as possible. So, as we go through the celebration of Easter, these 50 days, we read from John's Gospel and from the Acts of the Apostles about the amazing things that were accomplished following Jesus' Ascension, following Pentecost when, as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. Today, we have the passage about selecting Judas' successor so that, once again, there would be 12 Apostles. Remember that after Pentecost, the Christian community lived and held things in common; they shared everything. Those who owned property sold it and laid the funds at the feet of Peter and the Apostles so the funds could be shared in common. Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if the Spirit was moving that powerfully amongst us today, that the Church was growing as exponentially as it did during that period? The reality is that it's not. We continue to struggle, trying to live a virtuous life. Each day we want to live more fully in Christ, but we encounter difficulties. There are problems in our family; we have challenges at work. We see the problems in the world and they can seem overwhelming. I was trying to think of an illustration of the impact of these realities on our relationship with the Lord. Sometimes we all just wonder if all the struggles are worth it, when we're dealing with the realities of life, the difficulties that we encounter; sickness of a loved one; battles within our
"Consecrate them in that truth, and the truth is that my love will be so powerfully expressed by being crucified,” the absolute worst, most degrading way to die, Jesus did die. He mounted his throne, the altar of the Cross. He spread out his arms between heaven and earth on our behalf in expiation of our sins, and he offered himself as a perfect sacrifice. He knows we won't do the same because he knows us. He created us, he formed each of us for a particular purpose. Jesus knows that we will fail, but the whole point is that we continue to strive each day; we persevere in our trials. We overcome them through faith that, indeed, the Lord is with us; we realize that life is not about what tomorrow will bring, but what eternity will bring. We are consecrated in his truth and we live out his love to the greatest extent that we are able, based on who we are, the gifts we have, and the vocation to which we're called. Jesus Christ came that we might have life. Jesus Christ mounted the altar of the Cross so that we would live with him for all eternity. We, his brothers and sisters, become coheirs, sharers in the eternal promises of the Father. We celebrate this reality of the Resurrection, the coming of the Holy Spirit because, when the Lord returned to heaven, his promise was fulfilled. Jesus was only one person, living in human physicality, who could only be in one place at one time, but in the Spirit that he sends, the Advocate, the Paraclete, to live within us, to be expressed through us on his behalf, anointed in that one same Spirit in our Baptism, we are commissioned to go into every nation to proclaim Jesus Christ crucified and risen, to proclaim the Gospel, in order that his Kingdom will be established more fully and built up on this earth as it is in heaven.
