My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? — Psalm 22
Lent officially ends with the beginning of the 72 hours of Triduum (TRID-u-um) with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper Mass on Thursday evening of Holy Week. Our Partner Parishes faith family will observe the Triduum liturgies of the Lord’s Supper, the Exaltation of the Cross on Friday, and the Easter Mass Celebrations beginning at dark on Saturday with the Vigil Mass. Please make every effort to participate by attending these beautiful liturgies that celebrate the gift of our eternal salvation through the love of the Father by his gift of his Son, Jesus. Our celebration of the Triduum, the commemoration of Jesus’ passion, cross and death, and triumphant resurrection at Easter represent the definitive salvific acts through which was revealed, in the person of Christ, the Father’s plan for the salvation of the world. As a faith community we celebrate this wondrous truth with unabashed joy. I pray that you and your family’s joy is complete in the knowledge that Christ’s sacrificial offering on our behalf has accomplished its intended purpose.
Holy Thursday At 10:00 a.m. all the priests of the diocese gather with Bishop Malesic to celebrate the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral. We renew the promises that we made at the time of our ordination. This powerful tradition reminds us that Jesus instituted the priesthood during the Last Supper which the priests will commemorate later in the day with our respective faith communities. In addition, all of the oils: the Sacred Chrism, Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick are consecrated by the Bishop with the priests assisting. The oils are then transported by the priests back to our parishes for formal presentation during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the actual beginning of the Triduum. We read from John’s Gospel about how the Lord at table with his Apostles celebrated the Passover Meal. We give thanks that he instituted the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Priestly Ordination. Jesus would speak of his body to be broken and his blood to be poured out for the life of man. He asked us to do the same in memory of him. We celebrate the Eucharist each day in remembrance of his sacrificial offering on our behalf. After dinner was over, Jesus puts on an apron, takes a pitcher of water and a basin and washes the feet of the Apostles. He speaks of service to one another. Our celebration will include the priest washing the feet of 12 parishioners in accord with Jesus’ wish that we serve one another. Following the Lord’s Supper Mass, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose. The Blessed Sacrament will be placed in a tabernacle on a side altar. The tabernacle on the main altar will be emptied, the tabernacle door will be left open, the altar stripped and all images of Jesus covered. Throughout the evening until midnight, parishioners are invited to spend time in adoration before the Lord.
Good Friday We commemorate the Lord’s passion, cross and death at this liturgy. The altar and tabernacle are bare, representing the Lord is in the tomb. The priest will prostrate himself before the altar at the beginning of the liturgy in silent reverence, adoration and humility in acknowledgement of this wondrous sacrificial offering on our behalf. During the liturgy, we come forward to reverence the wood of the cross on which Jesus died. Although we will distribute Holy Communion, there will not be a consecration because we use the hosts consecrated at the Lord’s Supper for distribution. At 8:00 p.m. that evening we will celebrate Tenebrae in commemoration of the Lord’s sacrificial offering on our behalf. Ministers will read from Sacred Scripture and the choir will sing beautiful hymns that remind us of the depth of Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. After each reading, one of the seven candles on our candelabra will be extinguished. Following the dousing of the last flame, the sound of thunder will rumble through the church with all lights out to remind us of the events that took place at Christ’s death. The rumbling like the earth quaking at his death, the sky darkened, the curtain in the temple torn in two and the dead rising from their tombs is the foreboding ambiance of the service.
The Easter Vigil This liturgy on Holy Saturday Night of the Triduum is the greatest of all the Church’s Liturgies. We start in the dark, the Easter Fire blessed will be the source of the flame to ignite the newly blessed Paschal Candle. As we enter the darkened church, that single light represents the light of Christ risen from the tomb. One candle power will not illuminate the church but, when we light the tapers of all present, the church is lit up. Our individual lights combined illumine the entire church; they represent what the community of faith can be when all shine with the light of Christ. The Liturgy of the Word consists of readings that tell the story of Salvation History. From Genesis through the prophets we hear how the Father in partial and fragmentary ways revealed his plan for the salvation of mankind through those prophets. We then read from the New Testament and Gospel which represent the fullness of God’s revelation of his plan for our salvation in the person of Jesus Christ. We then celebrate the Liturgy of Baptism when the Elect will enter the saving waters and emerge members of the Body of Christ. They will be the newest members of our church whom we welcome with great joy. They will be confirmed and receive First Holy Communion in full communion with our community of faith. As the Exsultet (Easter Proclamation) proclaims over and over, “This is the night!” our celebration acknowledges all of God’s plans fulfilled in Christ’s Resurrection. We join in the celebration as the beneficiaries of his triumph as Jesus’ brothers and sisters.

We Celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday April 23, 2017 Come and join us for prayer and devotions at The Historic Church of St. Peter as we address the plight of those suffering and in need of Divine Mercy as a result of the drug overdose and death epidemic afflicting our area. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Confessions beginning at 1:00 p.m. During the Jubilee Year of 2000, St. Pope John Paul II established the second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday on the universal Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar. The universal church each year since the inception of this Feast has celebrated the devotion of Divine Mercy which Jesus revealed through St. Faustina. In Brownsville we will have a beautiful liturgy for this yearly celebration at The Historic Church of St. Peter beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2017. The faithful will participate in this special liturgy including Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction, Confessions and recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The vocal accompaniment of our choir will truly make this a beautiful and inspiring afternoon of devotion. Recognizing the great suffering that our community and nation experiences as a result of the opioid epidemic threatening our people, we will invoke the Lord’s Divine Mercy upon our community, the families and individuals afflicted by this disease. We will watch a video that portrays the great work of Community Cenacolo (Italian word for the Cenacle – the Upper Room). Cenacolo (chen-AH-ko-lo) requires an intense commitment to prayer and work from those in residence. The results of this faithbased approach to healing has been extraordinary. The individuals healed by their encounter with Jesus are far beyond typical treatments. Those afflicted are being permanently healed by the grace of God so abundantly present through the work of Cenacolo. The witness of those residing at Cenacolo, in the video, concerning their progress in faith and healing is truly inspiring and gives us hope for those we know and love. We will have a local young man speak about his personal journey through the darkness of addiction to healing and attaining the light of Christ. He will share his experience and provide particulars about Cenacolo for those who would like to further investigate this grace-filled organization as a potential source of healing for their loved ones. This is an invitation to God’s Mercy! The special presentation will be followed by the Holy Hour filled with prayers of mercy from the Diary of St. Faustina! We invite you to join us for a unique time for prayer, healing, thanksgiving and consecration of the family to The Divine Mercy.
Thanks to all our volunteers who helped on March 25 and April 1 to clean up St. Peter and St. Mary cemeteries! LOTS of trash and debris was collected and removed, and many headstones were returned to their proper positions. We at the Partner Parishes, and all those who have loved ones buried in our cemeteries, appreciate your generosity of time and effort! Once again, our cemeteries look beautiful as we begin our Spring 2017 maintenance program!
