disciples who are to be the light of Christ in this world. I encourage you to come, to participate, to truly enter into this Holy Week. Just a couple of thoughts that I'd like to share with you. As I was preparing my homily for Palm Sunday, I read from one of the commentators who wrote about a great Dominican preacher from the nineteenth century. He was preaching on Palm Sunday (now Passion Sunday) in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He was trying to convey to the people that they must truly enter into the Lord's Passion-tide in order to experience it, and to unite themselves with the Lord. He spoke about Luke's Passion narrative where it says that the Pharisees came to Jesus as he was being led into the city triumphantly, and they said, "Tell your disciples to stop crying out." They were crying out, "Hosannah, son of David; Hosannah, the king, the most high," proclaiming Jesus, and they would have made him king. Jesus' response was, "If they do not cry out, the very stones will." The preacher was trying to make a point, so he turned and he began to speak to the stones of the cathedral instead of to the congregation, in effect saying, "You must cry out with Our Lord and proclaim Our Lord. You must be his witnesses before the world." And the point, of course, is that we are the disciples in this age, that Our Lord did not hear, but he has called us by our baptismal commission to literally be his voice, to be his hands and feet in this world. Whether that was an effective way to get the attention of the congregation or not, the point is that we, hopefully, will all gather this week on Holy Thursday at either St. Cecilia or St. Peter to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. I had an interesting experience of my own on a Friday night that really put all this in perspective. One of the women to whom I give spiritual direction had come to the Stations of the Cross. Following the Stations, we were going to spend some time together. I had to close up the church, turn out all the lights, put the incense away after the Benediction. So I said, “You just wait here, and we'll go to the office for our meeting.” But as I came back through the church, it was just dusk, and light was still streaming through, illuminating our beautiful windows, shining not as brightly at dusk, but enough luminous effect of candles. It was beautiful. A very strong, powerful emotion, the gift of the Spirit, swept over us. So we just decided to sit for a little while and enjoy the beauty of the moment in the darkness, with this infused light coming in. Afterwards the woman shared with me an epiphany that she had, having grown up in this parish and remembering all those experiences from the time she was a little girl: coming to church—the family had a particular place where they would sit, as most of us do—remembering all of the different sacraments that she had received here. At times when she would be going away, she would just slip into church, she said, and pray. All those emotions swept over her; all those memories were calling her back to the Lord, to reunite, to reestablish that relationship she had with the Lord, to renew it. All of us get caught up in the immense hustle and bustle of this culture in which we live: a culture which says, "It's not about God; it's about me; it's about pleasure; it's about material things. It's not important to remember your Faith." But we all know that indeed, it is the number one priority in our lives. We have come from the Lord; we are returning to him. So this week, whether we had a special Lenten journey or not; whether we maintained our discipline or not, let us gather at these liturgies of the Triduum and truly and boldly proclaim the glory of our God. For, just as Jesus encountered his Good Friday before Easter morn, each of us, in our own lives, will do the same. Let us strive now, as we unite ourselves with the Lord so that we can journey with him. We’ll be united with him as we encounter the difficulties of this life, looking forward to our own resurrection. The Father’s eternal promise is ours because we are all brothers and sisters with Christ. This reality of Jesus’ humanity makes us coheirs with his shares in that powerful and everlasting inheritance.
