Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday, March 12, 2017

Soon it will be time to “Spring Forward” at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2017, when Daylight Saving Time begins. Perhaps you’ll want to set your clocks one hour ahead before going to bed on Saturday night. Remember that with Daylight Saving Time also comes the change of time in our Saturday Vigil Mass, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, this change takes place on the Saturday following the beginning of Daylight Saving Time, which is March 18 this year.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal March 4-5

Forty percent of the dioceses in the U.S. are “home mission dioceses” because they struggle with severe priest shortages, overwhelming poverty, high unemployment, geographical challenges, religious hostility, and other burdens that make it difficult to practice the Catholic faith. Without the help of others, these home mission dioceses cannot provide for many of the basic pastoral services that we here in the Greensburg Diocese take for granted. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal collection will be taken up at all Masses next weekend. Please be as generous as possible. Thank you!

"You cannot serve God and mammon." We all know in order to exist in this physical world we need food, we need shelter. There are some, however, who are focused only on mammon for its own sake: seeking great wealth; gathering material things in order to have security just for themselves; desiring to attain positions of power, recognition and prestige are their only concern. They forego everything else: family, friends, a relationship with God, so that they might focus all their energy, time and effort on the things of this world. However, the moment we pass from this world, all of the material things are gone. Unless we seek God and his righteousness, unless our relationship with God is the priority of our life, we ultimately experience great emptiness. Our encounter with God in prayer each day, participation on Sunday at our Eucharistic celebration, and living out the sacramental life of the Church, will ensure a deep and abiding relationship and the eternal security we seek. When the time comes for us to transition from this life to the next, very little will matter but our relationship with God. As a matter of fact, if we’ve worked to develop the deep, personal and profound relationship which Jesus Christ that he wants from each of us, we will be conscious of his abiding presence. Such a reality would enable us to enter that transition in his peace, having been assured of his eternal promises. Jesus made his human journey on our behalf most particularly when he accepted the cross. He enables us, if we walk with him, to extend our existence unto eternity through his Resurrection. Based on the wondrous nature of the eternal life to which we are heirs with Christ, mammon (things of this world) have limited value. The value of eternal life, achieved through a righteous relationship with our loving God, is beyond calculation or measure. The question is: How do we achieve this goal of a lifetime? How do we overcome our human limitations, our normal concerns and the fears that make us look only to security during the time of our physical existence? Not too long ago I watched a powerful YouTube presentation by an individual who called himself Bishop Tony Palmer. He was addressing a conference of approximately a thousand members of Kenneth Copeland Ministries, an Evangelical/Pentecostal church. Bishop Palmer identified himself as an Evangelical Anglican. He was advocating the need for there to be unity in the Church, for all Christians to be one. He started out by saying to all the ministers, "Now, you do know we're all Catholic, don't you?" They looked at each other in disbelief and said, "Huh?" He responded that "catholic" means "universal," and he delved very deeply into a presentation on unity of faith in Jesus Christ. When the assembled group seemed to respond reluctantly to the idea of striving for unity, the Bishop said it is because of your fears. He then said, “FEAR is nothing more than false evidence that appears real." I would like to explore that profound observation. All of us have natural human concerns. We're worried about tomorrow. Are we going to run out of money or have anyone to take care of us when we are old? Is the roof going to leak or other problems with the house develop? What about the children and our health? Bishop Palmer says we’re looking at false evidence; the Evil One wants us to be in darkness; he wants us to fear, even to despair. The Bishop and everybody who believes/trusts in Jesus Christ say fear is useless. As a matter of fact, it's destructive. Matthew's Gospel, which we study this entire liturgical year, speaks powerfully about fear, as we are discussing today. Think about this passage from Matthew Chapter 11 verses 25-30. This is the Gospel passage I read to every person who is sick or dying when I anoint them. Jesus has completed his public ministry: the healings, the miracles, the preaching, and he's turning to go towards Jerusalem. He knows that his Passion, Cross and death await him, but as he journeys with his Apostles and disciples, he sends the Apostles out two-by-two, saying, "Go to the towns and the villages we'll pass through. I want you to heal in my name; I want you to drive out evil spirits in my name; I want you to proclaim the Good News in my name." Remember, they are only simple fishermen whom Jesus sent out to heal, drive out evil spirits and proclaim the good news. The Apostles went out, probably fearful as we often are. They came back, overwhelmed with joy because they could heal. They did drive out evil spirits, and when they proclaimed the Good News in Jesus' name, the people listened and responded. This passage from Matthew's Gospel is an account of the prayer of thanksgiving that Jesus raised up to his heavenly Father for the authority that he was given on Earth. He said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for although you hid these things from the wise and the learned, you revealed them to the little ones." Now, we don't like to think of ourselves as "little ones," but in this sense, we truly are. We're not the wise and the learned who sit at the top of some corporate board, or other positions that reflect our great intelligence or education. Jesus has given us faith just like the Apostles. If we can step out in trust that he will journey with and protects us, our fears can be overcome. He says later: “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on your shoulders and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. Your soul will find rest, for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." And in these passages, he's not saying, "Stop working and sit around and pray all day.” He's saying, "Exercise prudence. Your gifts are sufficient for you to care for your family. Your gifts are sufficient to provide them with the necessary food and shelter: whatever they need.” In effect he is saying: I want you to go beyond your fears. When we've gone beyond them then we'll live out that discipleship to which he's called us. We will become the salt of the earth and the light of the world that he desires us to be. However, it does require faith. “Jesus, I trust in you!”

Dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return. — Gn. 3:19

Ash Wednesday, March 1, marks the beginning of Lent. It is a day of Abstinence and Fasting. We all have heard these terms over the years, but do we recall the particulars of them? Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national, and worldwide programs of sharing.

Update on Partner Parishes 2016 Diocesan Lenten Appeal Lent is approaching. Next week, March 5th is the first Sunday of Lent. We soon will begin conducting our yearly Diocesan Lenten Appeal (DLA). However, before we approach another appeal, it is important to recognize the results of 2016’s very successful DLAs at our Partner Parishes. In 2016, St. Cecilia had a DLA goal of roughly $11,000 from the Diocese. Our parish goal was just over $17,000. The funds were earmarked for restoring the interior of the church. Painting of the Vestibule, Nave and Sanctuary was completed early last year. A generous parishioner paid the difference between the $6,000 raised over the diocesan goal and the total cost of the restoration, which was $11,200. The painting and associated work was beautifully done. In 2016, The Historic Church of St. Peter had a DLA goal of $33,340 from the Diocese. Our parish goal was just over $50,000. The total raised exceeded $66,400. The funds were earmarked for the development of architectural plans for the new Social Hall/Rec Center and evaluation of ground conditions for construction purposes. Below are the expenditures, to date, associated with this initiative and an update on progress. We have just over $6,000 remaining from the 2016 DLA. These past weeks, meetings were held with the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Commission and Bishop Malesic concerning the Social Hall/Rec Center Project. We received very positive and supportive responses from Fayette County and the Diocese. Our building plans continue as we await bids from a number of local companies which have expressed interest in the role of General Contractor. We have had an amazing outpouring of assistance and volunteer hours from our parishioners. We

can’t thank you enough for your financial assistance, labor and patience in support of this project!
