I would like to give some background and context to our Readings for today. When we read the account of Abraham being asked to take Isaac, his son, to Mount Moriah and to sacrifice him, you say to yourself, "That's pretty frightening" that God would do such a thing. "Abraham" means "father of many nations." If you recall from the earlier scriptural accounts, he was originally called "Abram, father of one tribe." He was from an area of what is today Iraq. It was called “Ur of the Chaldeans." Recent archeological digs have determined that those who were the Ur of the Chaldeans had a horrific religious practice of sacrificing their children, of immolating them to their pagan gods. So, for example, if the village was under the threat of attack, they would think, "What could I offer my pagan god, my idol, in order that he would give me the protection I need? I'll offer my greatest treasure: my son or my daughter." This was the background, the tradition and experience of Abraham from his former life as a pagan. He was asked by the Lord to take Isaac and to go to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him; he said yes! At the time of God’s request, Abraham was more than 100 years old; his wife Sarah had borne Isaac in her ninetieth year. Abraham and Isaac traveled to Moriah. As they climbed the mountain, Isaac said, "Father, I have the wood on my back, and we have the fire. What will we sacrifice?" Abraham could not tell him, "It will be you." He said, "God will provide." As I noted, Abraham was a man of great faith. However, he could not understand how it was possible that God would demand Isaac since he and Sarah bore this child very late in life. He was confident that the Lord would provide a solution but he knew not how. They climbed the mountain. Abraham built the altar and placed the wood upon it. He bound Isaac and placed him upon the altar. He was about to sacrifice his son, but the hand of God held him back. There in the brambles was a ram provided by God that was placed upon the altar of sacrifice and offered up. And then, God said to Abraham, your faith is so profound that you would give me “your own beloved son.” Those words are similar to those which came from the clouds on Mount Tabor in today’s Gospel passage: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” The Old Testament contains the New Testament. The New Testament fulfills the Old Testament. All part of God’s plan. Many profound actions related to God’s plan for our salvation were accomplished through these prefigurements. Abraham is being taught that human sacrifice is not permissible, that the value of human life, whether it be a youth or an elder, is too precious. The teaching of the Jewish faith became--no human sacrifice! When Moses, the giver of the Law, was at Mount Sinai, he understood and made clear that human sacrifice should never be practiced. This life-changing teaching from God came to us Christians through our forebears of the Jewish Faith, from the Hebrew Scripture. Today in the letter of St. Paul to the Romans, we are asked the question: “What can separate us from the love of God?” Nothing. He gave us his only begotten Son to manifest his love. There is nothing that will separate us from him. Jesus, on Calvary as the true unblemished Lamb, would become the perfect offering that would be sacrificed on our behalf upon the altar of the Cross. The covenant gift that had been promised to Abraham, that he would be the father of many nations, was accomplished. He became the father of Jews, Muslims and us Christians. His people inherited the land, which was the Promised Land, and they were blessed by God. Our New Covenant is manifested in the person of Jesus Christ. His ministry was a powerful revelation for the disciples. Jesus said that sin would be destroyed and death itself would no longer threaten God’s people. Jesus’ Resurrection assured eternal life. Jesus Christ obediently submitted to his Passion and Cross so that we have life in him. Mt. Tabor is the mountain in today’s account from Mark's Gospel. Prior to ascending the mountain, Jesus had just told the Apostles for the first time that he would be handed over, that he would suffer his Passion, Cross and death, and then he would be raised on the third day. The Apostles wondered what he meant, why he had made comments about his death and that he would rise again. They didn't understand. Peter had responded, "Lord, do not talk like that. That could never happen to you." And Jesus said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking as humans do, and not as God does." For God's love for us is so profound, broad and deep that his Son would be sacrificially offered on our behalf to give us this model of love to follow. However, there are many challenges (mountains) we must overcome in our humanity to follow Jesus. The following are just a few examples. Each of us is formed in the image and likeness of our loving God. We are endowed with the gift of courage. We have the Holy Spirit within us who enables us to boldly proclaim our belief in Jesus Christ and his Gospel. But what happens? We become fearful. We don't want to say too much. We’re afraid we might offend someone. We think others may laugh at us if we boldly proclaim our Faith, so we go along with the crowd without speaking God’s truth. Jesus also modeled generosity by loving all he encountered. Are we following that model in our family? Do we love one another sacrificially or do we get caught up in this materialistic world, focusing more on things than family members? Are we sometimes merely cogs of a consumer culture instead of true disciples? Let's talk now about a third area on which to focus during Lent: the ability to forgive and to seek forgiveness. There are times when we would like to overcome difficulties with estranged family members. However, we’re afraid to be hurt if the others refuse to accept our extended hand, or that they may even ridicule us. In our pride, our unwillingness to be humble, we don't attempt reconciliation. We maintain the status quo, the difficulties that exist between us. These are just three examples of difficult personal mountains to climb during Lent. We should follow the Lord’s model of 40 days in the desert for our Lenten journey--increased fasting, daily prayer and being more charitable. The discipline of Lent is not something to which we willingly submit. We have become too comfortable with responding to our physical appetites and pleasures in life. Through our prayer, fasting and almsgiving, the Lord will bless us with the necessary strength to overcome these desires. Let us not miss this opportunity to draw more deeply into relationship with Jesus.

St. Cecilia DLA 2018 – $1,200 and Counting!

Historic Church of St. Peter Combines Diocesan Lenten Appeal & Capital Campaign As many of you know, we are working with Bishop Malesic and Diocesan staff to obtain final approval for a capital campaign to begin construction on our new facility, St. Mary’s Hall. We are waiting for final cost estimates that will help to determine the scope of our project and the needs of our future campaign. Bishop Malesic has given us permission to combine the 2018 Diocesan Lenten Appeal (DLA) into our Capital Campaign when it begins. For this reason, and for this year only, you will not receive any DLA mailings from the Bishop. I anticipate that we will receive final approval in the coming weeks and hope to begin the campaign sometime in March or shortly thereafter. Thank you for your continued support and prayers during this exciting time for The Historic Church of St. Peter’s parish family. — Fr. Tim
