"This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel." Jesus of course proclaimed this as he began his public ministry in Galilee. These words have equal application and meaning for our lives. For, indeed, this is the time of fulfillment for us and for those people with whom we live each day and in the broader world. The Kingdom of God is always at hand, and we are to be the hands, the feet, and the voice of the Lord among his people. During these 40 days of Lent, let us focus on repentance and living the Gospel. Our account today from St. Mark’s Gospel is limited in terms of what transpired after the Lord received the anointing of the Holy Spirit that came in the form of a dove in his Baptism. The Spirit drove Jesus into the desert for 40 days where he fasted and was tempted by Satan. If you're familiar with Matthew's and Luke's Gospel accounts of the 40 days in the desert, they're very detailed. They chronicle the temptations to which Jesus was subjected, and Luke, at the end of his passages concerning the temptations, says, “And Satan left him for awhile.” We know when Jesus began his public ministry, he encountered all sorts of opposition. We hear the stories from the Gospel passages week after week how the scribes, the Pharisees and the Sadducees attempted to trap him. They continually opposed him and persecuted him. Those all represent temptations for Jesus to say: "I don't need this; I've had enough." However, the temptation Jesus experienced and overcame that is most pivotal to our salvation is that night after his Last Supper when he went into the Garden of Gethsemane and experienced his Passion. Jesus’ Passion was deepened by his understanding of the physical abuse to which he would be subjected, the degradation, the humiliation that he would suffer. Many commentators, and I personally, believe that Jesus’ suffered even more because he knew that, even though he would give his life on behalf of all humanity in order that we might have life in him, many would refuse the gift. Multitudes of people have turned their backs on Jesus and salvation, refusing to accept his gift of love. We all know individuals who no longer believe. They were baptized Catholic and for some time followed the teachings of the Church. If those who have left returned for Mass or other denominations’ services, the churches couldn’t contain them. They’ve said "No!" to the gift of life that Jesus offers them. Jesus’ knowledge of this reality caused suffering so intense that Jesus said to his Father: "Father, if this cup might pass me by, but your will be done, not mine." And his Father asked Jesus to drink deeply of that cup of suffering. Jesus said his "Yes," and he entered into his crucible. None of us will suffer so severely. During these 40 days, as we journey with the Lord, we must seriously consider what we're asked to do on his behalf. Are we willing to fast, pray more and give alms? No one enjoys fasting, but it won't kill us. Not all of us spend time each day in prayer, although I strongly encourage us to do so. When we begin the daily encounter of prayer with the Lord and faithfully follow through, we will experience great consolations and joy in our lives. Our almsgiving is not about an increase in parish collections. Almsgiving entails charitably giving our time, talent or treasure to accomplish the good in many spheres of our lives. The question for us is how do we, during this period of 40 days, make a sincerer effort to accept that we are to be Christ, by being more charitable, even if it's just in our homes? We begin by responding more generously with our spouse and children. At work and in our faith community, we become more Christ-like in our dealings with others. Now that Lent has begun, let us focus on our relationship with the Lord and become introspective by looking most particularly at our personal relationships. Are there divisions? Are there separations? Have we built walls between ourselves and others? Have we sought to achieve reconciliation with them? Have we forgiven, and sought forgiveness? Those are the sorts of things that the Lord would have us do as we prepare to share the Paschal Mystery with him: that Holy Week experience where we join with him in his Passion, Cross and death. If we prepared, we will joyously encounter his Resurrection and his Easter promises to us. We will inherit the benefits of his love, his promise to us, as his brothers and sisters in his humanity, that we are co-heirs, sharers with him in the eternal promises of his Father--powerful gifts, a wondrous mystery that we are all part of, for we are all members of the Mystical Body of Christ. Our first reading, a passage from the account of Noah in Genesis, speaks of the covenant with God. However, the verses immediately prior make clear how sin was so prevalent in Noah’s time: idolatry, adultery, an array of sins that God addressed through the punishment of a massive flood on earth. But Noah and his family members believed when the Lord said the flood would occur. They built the Ark and floated safely above the waters that represented death and destruction. In St. Peter’s letter today, the account of Noah’s family being saved from the waters is a foreshadowing of Baptism: the washing away of sin. Each of us has been baptized. We've been anointed in the one same Spirit that Jesus was when the dove descended upon him. We're commissioned by that same Spirit to proclaim his Gospel. The Lord knows that our human limitations will preclude us from being perfect; we will fail and sin. Of course, this is the tendency of our humanity. The journey of our lifetime is all about being formed more fully into the person of Christ. So, this Lent, let us become more focused; let us say our "Yes" to the will of God for our lives. We will do what we're able in a more prayerful way. We will become more Christ-like in the charity that we express on the Lord’s behalf. It's a challenge; it's difficult. We all have complexities in our lives: the constant stresses that cause us to say, "It's not worth making sacrifices," but indeed it is. The graces we receive, particularly in prayer when we encounter our Lord and he begins to manifest his presence more fully in our lives, where he instructs us as to his will for us, will pay dividends—not only in this life, but in the life to come.

Historic Church of St. Peter Combines Diocesan Lenten Appeal & Capital Campaign As many of you know, we are working with Bishop Malesic and Diocesan staff to obtain final approval for a capital campaign to begin construction on our new facility, St. Mary’s Hall. We are waiting for final cost estimates that will help to determine the scope of our project and the needs of our future campaign. Bishop Malesic has given us permission to combine the 2018 Diocesan Lenten Appeal (DLA) into our Capital Campaign when it begins. For this reason, and for this year only, you will not receive any DLA mailings from the Bishop. I anticipate that we will receive final approval in the coming weeks and hope to begin the campaign sometime in March or shortly thereafter. Thank you for your continued support and prayers during this exciting time for The Historic Church of St. Peter’s parish family. — Fr. Tim

St. Cecilia Parishioner Authors Book On Giving and Forgiving Late last summer, Mr. Ed Materkowski, a parishioner at St. Cecilia Parish, shared a copy of his recently completed book referenced on this page. We had hoped to share a copy with Bishop Malesic who was scheduled to be in Brownsville the following week to give an invocation for the official inauguration of a new program initiated by Crosskeys. The Bishop was unable to attend the dedication and therefore no copy of The Journey of the Good Wine was provided to him at that time. Ed followed up with the Diocese in order to acquire the necessary “Nihil Obstat,” which means that nothing contained in the book is objectionable on doctrinal or moral grounds. Additionally, the Bishop gave Ed’s work his “Imprimatur,” which is an official license by the Roman Catholic Church to print a religious book. Therefore, the Partner Parishes are happy to publicize Ed’s achievement and this wonderful biblical novella. Hopefully, we will be able to make copies available for sale in the foyer of the churches in the near future.

Congratulations, Ed! — Fr. Tim “The Journey of the Good Wine is a biblical novella that takes place in the early part of the first century A.D. Come and share in the experiences of the characters as they interact and travel through the various regions and towns of the Holy Land. Journey with them and encounter situations and problems that present opportunities for giving and forgiving. You are there. Will you react as they do? Will you make the same choice?” — Ed Materkowski, Author
