From the Desk of Fr. Tim... After our wonderful celebration with Bishop Malesic last Sunday and the inspiring response of our people, it is hard to resume my “weekly bulletin notes” without feeling the presence of a powerful Spirit of the Living God moving in our faith community. I can’t tell you the number of people who have approached me or called the parish office with statements to the effect, “I don’t know how I can help but I want to participate in our parish(es) ministries.” How edifying! How exciting! The Lord knows his people and how best to touch their hearts. Perhaps the beautiful music of our Liturgy or maybe a remembrance in prayer of a family member who has gone before but whose constant participation in the life of the church stands as a reminder of the values their life so powerfully expressed is causing this response. Whatever the motivation, it is a joy for me to be part of the outpouring of love touching our people. Bishop Malesic is such a gentle, down to earth shepherd whose humor and radiant joy added greatly to the celebratory mood of all who participated in the Installation Mass last Sunday. The music was uplifting and joyous, all who participated as ministers for the Liturgy acquitted themselves so well and the spread of delicacies the ladies prepared and so beautifully presented at the reception speaks for itself. As I have mentioned in the past, the Lord always accomplishes his purpose in amazing ways. His providential hand is always at work in us and the church. This week’s readings seem so timely and appropriate when considered in the light of the Spirit moving so powerfully in our parishes that I attempted to express above. Whether Isaiah, Paul or Peter, who are featured this week in the readings, the accounts of their spiritual transformation are extraordinary. Isaiah’s vision of the power of God resplendently displayed in the Temple frightens him but moves him to the depth of his being. In the presence of God he can do nothing but acknowledge his sins and say “I’m unworthy.” However, as the Lord touches him through the healing ember he is moved to respond to God’s will for his life. When the voice of the Lord asks “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah is compelled to respond “Here I am, send me!” The scriptures are replete with accounts of the courage of Isaiah speaking truth to power as advisor and prophet to many kings. Paul recounts his transformation from chief persecutor of the followers of Jesus to one who “toiled harder than all of them” (the apostles) to proclaim the Gospel. He in true humility shares an account of the revelation he had received about Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and appearances before his ascension. Paul did not participate in any of these momentous events but through revelation was made part of them so his evangelization efforts might bear fruit. Jesus called him on the road to Damascus and he responded to become one of the greatest disciples’ of Christ. Peter who wore the “Shoes of the Fisherman” was transformed on the waters of the Lake of Gennesaret. The former Simon would be so moved by Jesus’ teaching and miraculous power that he would literally leave everything that very day and follow Jesus. We know the rest of that story of how this fully human individual, like us in our failures and mistakes, would be the leader of the Church Jesus would establish upon the “rock,” Simon would become as Peter. We are not Isaiah, Peter nor Paul but we are all called as they were to respond. In the midst of our respective vocations, we are to achieve the work of building up the Body of Christ as we fulfill our daily duties. Perhaps you remember the Song “Here I am, Lord”. In that hymn the constant refrain by the voice of the Lord, after describing the suffering of his people, is “Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?” The hymn’s response is “Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.” I remember specifically the time in a Mass, many years ago, when that hymn moved me to respond more fully to Christ’s call. How about you? Lenten Daily Mass I hope that we’ll all be moved to participate in the life of the church during Lent. Whether through attendance at daily Mass or the Stations of the Cross with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, we will have a multitude of opportunities to respond to the Lord’s call during our Lenten retreat. It is difficult to determine if many took to heart the “Daily Mass” portions of my notes that were in the bulletin the last nine weeks. However, I continue to encourage you to consider this response to the bounty of gifts and the love with which God has showered you and your family.

Music Notes On this final Sunday of Ordinary Time before Lent, we bid farewell to the “Alleluia”, which will not be proclaimed again until the Easter Vigil. Likewise, during Lent, the “Gloria” is not sung, except on Solemnities, many of our hymns take on a more somber tone, and we will use the chant-like Mass setting, Mass of Charity and Love. These subtle and not so subtle differences in our Lenten liturgies help to remind us of the penitential nature of the season. We deny ourselves the “Alleluia” and “Gloria”, and more upbeat music, to show our contrition. By doing so, may our celebration of the Resurrection be all the more glorious.

FYI Catholic Newman Club at California University of Pa will be hosting a Distribution of Ashes Service at 12Noon at the Old Main Chapel on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome to attend.

Bishop Edward C. Malesic Installed Fr. Timothy Kruthaupt as Pastor Surrounded by several altar servers, the Knights of Columbus, and fellow priests, Fr. James Petrovsky and Fr. Ron Simboli, Fr. Tim was installed as Pastor for the Partner Parishes of St. Peter and St. Cecilia by Bishop Edward C. Malesic. A beautiful mass complete with Fr. Tim’s family, both parish councils, the parish staff members, two cantors, two lectors, the full St. Peter choir, instrument ensemble and multiple Eucharistic Ministers was held on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at St. Peter. The day was lovely with no snow, warm with plenty of sunshine adding to the celebratory mood as nearly 300 witnessed the occasion. A celebratory reception was held at the Sons of Italy where Jerry’s Catering and the Society of Catholic Women, St. Cecilia’s Christian Mothers, and Cross Keys provided the wonderful, celebratory fare!
