Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine In Memory of
Stella Solak by Daughter Lorraine Kelley & family
Our first passage from the book of the Prophet Isaiah relates to the return of the people Israel from the Babylonian exile. They confront the reality that the city of Jerusalem is destroyed, not a stone left upon a stone. They are lamenting that the Lord is not assisting their efforts to rebuild. They thought their prayer and fasting would bring the Lord’s support. However, the people had not been faithful to the covenant. They believed it unfair that the Lord was not recognizing the fasting and the abstinence in which they engaged to win favor. They didn't feel the Lord was responding appropriately because difficulties kept mounting all around them. Isaiah speaks on behalf of the Lord, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Share your bread with the hungry; begin to shelter the oppressed and the homeless.’ If you would clothe the naked when you see them, and not turn your back on your own, then your light would break forth like the star. The wounds you have would be quickly healed; your vindication would go before you, and the glory of the Lord would be your rear guard. Then you shall call out and the Lord will answer. You shall cry for help, and he will say to you: ‘Here I am.’” Powerful instruction and a sound remedy. All of us have had experiences with the Lord when all seemed lost and then he responded to assist us. In my life, to the extent that I devote myself to responding to the Lord's promptings concerning my vocation as a priest, he'll respond. Often he responds by encouraging me to enter more fully into the cross I'm carrying on his behalf. Suddenly, his light does appear: when I trust, when I say in faith, “Lord, your will be done; do with me as you will.” He responds and resolves the difficulty. He makes sure that his light penetrates so that I understand what is taking place. God’s assistance is there for all of us to the extent that we devote ourselves to accepting the purpose for which we were created: to know, to love and to serve our God. One of my favorite examples is the Meals on the Boulevard. It is so profound because it relates directly to what Isaiah asks us to do, which is to feed those who are hungry and to clothe the naked. It's so amazing when I look around on our trips to the Boulevard to feed the homeless. I have one 90-year-old, two 87-year -olds, and a couple of kids who just turned 80. The bulk of the rest are in their 70s. I'm one of the youngest. I'm in my 60s. But the point is: these folks are going out in faith, feeling that they need to respond to the promptings of the Lord in their lives. We don't have any special gifts in terms of how we respond to these homeless folks. We just go with the food and the clothing and a smile. We embrace them in that smile because it's the Lord's love saying to them: “You have integrity of person; you're worthy of this consideration and this sharing in God's love.” He's in heaven. We're here, and we're the ones who are to be the light-bearers on his behalf. But as I said: it doesn't require special gifts. Listen to St. Paul. We know that he went throughout the Mediterranean basin and established Christian communities. He powerfully proclaimed Jesus Christ. Week after week we read from his letters. But listen to the letter he addressed to the Corinthians today: “I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling. My message and my proclamations were not persuasive words of wisdom, but were a demonstration of the Spirit and God's power, so that your faith might rest—not on human wisdom, but on the power of God.” So, he's saying, “I came and I was weak; I was fearful; I was even trembling.” As a matter of fact, as he's writing to the Corinthians, he's in prison in Ephesus for proclaiming Jesus Christ. He says, “I didn't have any great wisdom; my words weren't so persuasive, but because I was there on behalf of the Lord, they had the power of his Spirit.” Paul was beaten; he was struck with rods three times—not three individual whacks, but three times of 40 whacks. He was scourged; he was shipwrecked, stoned, and left for dead. Paul was constantly bombarded with suffering, but look at what he accomplished because he was willing to step out in faith! And that's what the Lord says to us. He says, “You are the salt of the world.’ So think about that. Salt enhances. Like any spice, it flavors the food we eat. It will preserve the food if we're in circumstances where we don't have refrigeration. But let's look at it the other way, in terms of our gifts. If we have a period of drought, we don't have enough water to stay hydrated. If we would put salt in our mouth, it would choke us. If we didn't have food and were starving, and we took salt to replace the food, we'd become ill. But the point about that is that salt is a great natural gift intended for a proper purpose and a proper function, just as the gifts we have. When we utilize our gifts focused only on building up our own interests, such as pursuing an inordinate income; making sure security is ours in every circumstance; seeking recognition, power and authority, we miss the point. We become like that salt when there is a drought; our gifts are being used for the wrong purpose. I was given the gifts in order to share them, so that as the Lord said, I would be a light for the world or like a city on a mountain: I shouldn't be hidden. I should let my light shine! The Lord said that the light should shine for all those in our house, that we should not forget our own. This is true in our residence with our family and true here in our faith community. Let that light shine so others know that in the love of Jesus Christ, they are being embraced by a smile or a warm handshake that we give them. That's not difficult. But it's hard to say, “I’m going to quit focusing on my self-interest and focus on the needs of others.” That's a difficult decision. However, we believe what the Lord has told us through Scripture: that his eternal promises will be fulfilled if we respond as we should to our respective vocations. I'm a parent; I'm a spouse. I devote myself to my family. Each day I commit to dutifully fulfilling my responsibilities--even on the humdrum days, even in difficult times. That's all the Lord asks of us. We are to make sure that the light that envelops our families is the light of Christ, and not one of selfinterest. Our light is to shine so that our good deeds give glory to our heavenly Father.

Lenten Series Scheduled: RENEW and “Live Lent!”
In light of our need to experience a true conversion to Gospel living, we are offering an upcoming opportunity to strengthen our faith. In less than a month we will begin our Lenten celebration with Ash Wednesday. As we approach the Lenten season, let us consider how this year we could journey with the Lord through his public ministry to his passion, cross and death. We have until April 16 to evaluate and define more clearly how our individual journey with Jesus will enhance our celebration of Easter glory and his Resurrection. Our Partner Parishes will be conducting a “RENEW” Lenten Series called “Live Lent!” It will consist of small faith-sharing groups meeting once each week, one meeting during the day and the other in the evening. It will focus on studying the Sunday Gospel and Old Testament readings. We will seek to RENEW our depth of the Lenten experience and to begin the transformation of our lives by living more fully the Beatitudes. Watch upcoming bulletins for details!
Candles Available from Candlemas Day Candles from this past week’s Candlemas Day service are now available in the back of each church of our Partner Parishes for a suggested donation of $2.00 per box. In days past, it was customary for Catholics to bring candles from home to be blessed on Candlemas Day. Nowadays, most parishes provide the candles, which are at least 51% beeswax. These candles are used in the home for devotional purposes: they can be lit after dusk on All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1,) during the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, and during storms and times of trouble.
