The passage from Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount was a very powerful reading for this Sunday’s Gospel. Before we explore the Beatitudes proclaimed by Jesus, I'd like to begin by referencing St. Paul's Letter to the Corinthians that challenged them with the following commentary he’d written about them in his letter: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth, but God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise. And he chose the weak of the world to shame the strong; those who count for nothing to reduce to nothing those who are something that no human being might boast before God. — 1 Cor. 1:26-29 To be described as a foolish and meek people would not normally be considered noble or positive. However, the Lord had revealed to Paul that this earthly journey from our birth to our death is not about recognition. As a result, he proposed to the Corinthians that life is not about gathering things, seeking positions that garner attention or that mark us as someone special. The Lord’s life and ministry reflect what he truly calls us to be. Jesus left us a model that is far beyond our human understanding: his was a model of sacrificial love—powerfully expressed in the Cross. I often comment that the reason we as Catholics leave the Lord's body, his corpus, on the Cross, is to be a continual reminder to us that, as we follow the Lord, we are called to a self-sacrificing love, a literal giving of ourselves away for the other. When we listen to the Lord's Sermon on the Mount from a perspective of sacrificial love, it begins to make sense. Jesus blesses those who are poor in spirit, who mourn, who are meek, who hunger and thirst for righteousness. In effect he asks even those who are gifted with great strength, intellect or material resources to reflect his gentle, loving approach to others. We are called to identify with those who are dispossessed, the poor, the orphan and the widow. We are asked to unite with them on this journey, to be a generous people. Jesus asks us to recognize that it's not what we accumulate during this lifetime that accompanies us when we transition to the new life in Christ, but what we give away during this lifetime. Our love, generosity and service will accompany us when we enter the Lord’s presence. Think about that reality. If we give ourselves away by being a loving person and sharing our material possessions, we will never be separated from our goodness. The giving away of ourselves, such as through our understanding and empathy for others, actually increases what we possess. If we are willing to be present for others at their time of need, to nurture and strengthen them on their journey, the net effect is to increase our likeness to Christ. We share with others from our abundance. Our sacrifices before the Lord will not go unnoticed. He will recognize in us the humble servant who meekly seeks to follow the model that he gave us by caring for our brothers and sisters in whatever circumstance we find them. This is true when we serve members of our immediate family, our faith community, those in the workplace or if we're called to a vocation of service to those in the broader world. The challenge St. Paul presents to the Corinthians and that Jesus proclaims through the Beatitudes is difficult but not impossible. Some say living the Beatitudes is not realistic. I would like to continue using St. Paul as an example of one who not only spoke of the Gospel virtues but truly lived them. He modeled for all humanity what a life based on the Beatitudes would reflect. St. John Chrysostom, a Bishop and great commentator on the scriptures, gave a homily titled, “For love of Christ, Paul bore every burden.” This brief quote from the homily contains the substance of his teaching concerning Paul’s life in Christ: “When danger, injustice and abuse threatened Paul, he said: I am content with weakness, mistreatment and persecution. These he called the weapons of righteousness, thus telling us that he derived immense profit from them. “Thus, amid the traps set for Paul by his enemies, with exultant heart he turned their every attack into a victory for himself; constantly beaten, abused and cursed, he boasted of it as though he were celebrating a triumphal procession and taking trophies home, and offered thanks to God for it all: Thanks be to God who is always victorious in us! This is why he was far more eager for the shameful abuse that his zeal in preaching brought upon him than we are for the most pleasing honours, more eager for death than we are for life, for poverty than we are for wealth; he yearned for toil far more than others yearn for rest after toil. The one thing he feared, indeed dreaded, was to offend God; nothing else could sway him. Therefore, the only thing he really wanted was always to please God.” We are not asked to suffer how St. Paul did as he proclaimed the Gospel. Our vocation is not to be an Evangelist, but we do strive to respond to Jesus’ call to live out Gospel values, including the Beatitudes. If we truly enter into relationship with our Lord, seeking to understand what his will is for our lives and striving to live it out, we will enter into the heavenly, beatific realm. In the everyday struggles of life, the path Jesus calls us to follow doesn't always seem clear. However, if we faithfully seek to know his will, he does reveal himself to us. In light of our need to experience a true conversion to Gospel living, I’d like to share an upcoming opportunity to strengthen our faith. In just over a month we will begin our Lenten celebration with Ash Wednesday. What I'm asking you to consider, as we approach the Lenten season, is how this year you could journey with the Lord through his public ministry to his passion, cross and death. We have until April 16 to evaluate and define more clearly how our individual journey with Jesus will enhance our celebration of Easter glory and his Resurrection. Our Partner Parishes will be conducting a “RENEW” Lenten Series. It will consist of small faith-sharing groups: one meeting during the day and the other in the evening. The series is called “Live Lent!” It will focus on studying the Sunday Gospel and Old Testament readings. Once a week in small faith-sharing groups we will seek to RENEW our depth of the Lenten experience and to begin the transformation of our lives by living more fully the Beatitudes. Watch upcoming bulletins for details!

Teaching Our Children to Share Through Children’s Offering Envelopes

Teaching your children to share their time, talents and treasure from a young age is an important but sometimes difficult responsibility of parenthood. Here at the Partner Parishes, parents have an opportunity to teach their children the rewards of sharing their blessings through the Children’s Envelope program. Children’s envelopes were mailed last week for Faith Formation classes for grades 1 through 12. If your child did not receive his or her envelopes, please call the office, 724-785-7781.
