From the Desk of Fr. Tim... “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me ….” Thus the quote from the Prophet Isaiah that Jesus reads in the synagogue on the Sabbath begins. St. Luke references this scriptural passage that Jesus proclaimed in the verses we read from his Gospel for this the Third Sunday of Ordinary time. In his home town of Nazareth Jesus after quoting Isaiah had said, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” His old neighbors from Nazareth were not too pleased with Jesus after he challenged them to recognize him as a prophet of the Lord. Instead, in an angry response, they attempted to cast him off the brow of the hill upon which Nazareth was built. Last week’s Sunday Liturgy included the reading from St. Paul’s first Letter to the Corinthians through which he enumerates a lengthy list of gifts God’s faithful people receive in order that they may serve him effectively. St. Paul says “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” “Each individual” means us! In my bulletin notes last week I asked that we all expend some time discerning the gifts that we’ve been given. Have we reflected on those “talents” the Lord has bestowed on us? Are we attempting to develop those talents and expending them on behalf of the Lord and his people? These questions are so important for members of a community of faith. On a personal basis, I must continue to reflect and expend time in prayer asking the Lord how to expend the gifts of time, talent and treasure that he has given me. This is particularly true as Bishop Malesic visits our Parishes to officially install me as pastor of St. Peter’s and administrator of St. Cecilia. I’m greatly honored to be chosen for this work on behalf of the Lord. However, regardless of the spiritual gifts, the energy and desire to serve I’ve been given, nothing of consequence will be achieved without the help of all our people. Our people, the other members of the Body of Christ here in our Parishes, must also exercise their gifts in conjunction with mine, as spiritual leader, to accomplish great things on behalf of the Lord. Please continue to help in every way that you are able, as a member of our Parishes, by praying, participating and continually striving to strengthen the life and light of Christ in our churches. Little can be accomplished when we work alone but by complementing one another’s talents and by expending them on behalf of the Lord and his people, we can make a significant contribution to building up the Kingdom of God in our corner thereof.

Daily Mass (Receiving Our Daily Bread) When we attend daily Mass we have the opportunity to partake of the Bread of Life, are great gift. Receiving the Eucharist daily or as regularly as we are able supercharges our spiritual life. We change, transformed a little more each day into Christ. F.J. Sheed in his book Give Us Today Our Daily Bread says “the life we are now concerned with is Christ living in us; the only possible food for it is Christ.” That’s why Jesus gave us this assurance: “My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (Jn 6: 55.) Feeding on Jesus sustains our life in him. When Jesus taught us to pray, he instructed us to ask the Father to “Give us today our daily bread.” (Mt 6: 11) On one level, we are asking God to provide food for our bodies. We count on him for our daily sustenance, but that petition of the Our Father has a deeper meaning. From the earliest days, the Church has understood that “daily bread” referred to the Eucharist. Jesus wants us to feed on his Body and Blood every day. F. J. Sheed says, “The Blessed Eucharist is the sacrament. Baptism exists for it, all the others are enriched by it. The whole being is nourished by it. It is precisely food, which explains why it is the one sacrament meant to be received daily. Without it, one petition of the Our Father—‘ Give us this day our daily bread’—lacks the fullness of its meaning.” F.J. Sheed Eating Christ’s Body and drinking his Blood has a marvelous effect on us: we become what we eat! “When we receive Communion,” said the bishops of the United States, “we need to remember that we are not changing Christ into ourselves. Jesus is transforming us into himself.” Daily Communion magnifies our share in Christ’s life and makes us more like him. “The Eucharist,” said St. Augustine, “is our daily bread. The power belonging to this divine food makes it a bond of union. Its effect is then understood as unity, so that, gathered into his Body and made members of him, we may become what we receive.” In addition to encountering the Lord Jesus and being more fully formed into his very body by partaking in the Eucharist, our community of faith is strengthened. Participating with fellow parishioners in daily Mass enables the members of our parish to develop deeper relationships with one another. The parish is fortified by the union of its members in Christ.

Music Notes Both the first reading and the Gospel this Sunday relate occasions when the word of God is proclaimed in the midst of the community. This offers an opportunity to explain the meaning and importance of the Gospel Acclamation. While we remain seated during the first and second readings, we stand for the proclamation of the Gospel and we greet this proclamation by singing the acclamation. Singing this acclamation announces our belief that the person of Christ becomes present in our midst in the very proclamation of the Gospel. (GIRM, no. 62) The verse sung by the cantor is usually taken from the gospel text and acts as an invitation that we open our hearts to hear what will be proclaimed and let ourselves by changed by it.

Painting at St. Cecilia’s Church The interior of St. Cecilia's Church is being painted. Therefore all Masses are being celebrated at St. Peter's through Saturday, January 30th. If all goes according to the painter's proposed schedule the next Mass celebrated at St. Cecilia's will be on Sunday, January 31, at the normal time of 9:45 A.M. We appreciate your patience. A number of parishioners have made an inquiry concerning funding for this project. St. Cecilia's project for the 2016 Diocesan Lenten Appeal (DLA) is specifically for payment of costs connected with the painting project. The details will be presented to the parish as the yearly DLA begins after Ash Wednesday. Little is known about Saint Blaise prior to his mention in a court physician's medical journal. The physician, Aëtius Amidenus, spoke of Saint Blaise's aid in treating objects caught in the throat. He was also mentioned in the book of Acts, where he was aided by animals and treated people and beasts alike. Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles. Saint Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The similarity of the steel combs and the wool combs made a large contribution to Saint Blaise's leadership as the patron saint of wool combers and the wool trade. The feast of St. Blaise is on Wednesday February 3rd. Blessing of throats will take place after Masses to ensure that all who desire the St Blaise Blessing will have an opportunity for the blessing.

St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School is hosting an Open House on Sunday, January 31st from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Faculty, staff, and administration will be available to answer any questions you may have. Tours will be given and Financial Aid information will be available. For more information, please call 724-438-8598.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

Save the Date… Lent begins early this year with Ash Wednesday celebrated on February 10th. We will have the entire schedule of Masses for Ash Wednesday to be celebrated at St. Peter's and St. Cecilia listed in the February 7th bulletin and on the February calendar.

A note from our neighboring Parish St. John the Baptist, Perryopolis. St. John the Baptist, Perryopolis is aware that St. Hedwig Cemetery in Smock suffered damage due to vandalism. We are working in conjunction with the State Police and Diocese on this issue. If you would like additional information, please contact the St. John the Baptist Parish Office at 724-736-4442.

The theme of this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is "Called to Proclaim the Mighty Acts of the Lord." (cf. Peter 2:9). According to Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute (GEII). . . , "the theme finds its origins in the First Letter of Peter. The relationship between baptism and proclamation, and the calling shared by all the baptized to proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord was inspired by two verses from the First Letter of St Peter." The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years , in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity. By annually observing the WPCU, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one." (cf. John 17:21) The Week or Prayer for Christina Unity is being recognized from January 18-25, 2016. Further promotional and preparatory materials for the 2016 WPCU can be found through the World Council of Churches and the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute.

Special Collection Appeal from Bishop Malesic

Dear Monsignor or Father, Severe weather has recently impacted states in the South and Midwest regions of the country. Recently, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, President of the USCCB, requested the U.S. bishops to consider taking up a special collection for relief from these recent storms and possible future domestic calamities. The funds collected in this one-time special appeal for the 2015-2016 storms and other natural disasters will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA, the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they and their member agencies respond to immediate emergency needs for such necessities as water, food, shelter, and medical care, as well as to the long term need to rebuild and recover after widespread destruction, and to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church. The Diocese of Greensburg will respond to this appeal with a special collection to support these relief efforts. I would kindly ask that a special collection be taken up for this worthy cause at all Masses in the Diocese on the weekend of January 30 and 31. Working together, we can do so much to advance God’s Kingdom on earth, and most especially in these troubled times. With thanks to you and your people and asking God’s blessing on all of you, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, + Edward C. Malesic The Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic, JCL

Your generous donations to help others in need is greatly appreciate!
