In Cycle A, this entire year, we will study Matthew's Gospel. At the point we hear in today’s passage, Jesus has begun his public ministry in Galilee. John the Baptist has been arrested and the Lord begins his proclamation of the “Good News” saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of God is upon you." Jesus is in the town of Capernaum, the home of Peter, Andrew, James and John. In Chapter Nine of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, quoted in Matthew’s Gospel, the prophet living 700 years before spoke of these events of Jesus’ ministry. During the life of Isaiah, the Northern Kingdom consisted of the 10 tribes that had broken away from Jerusalem and Judah. Isaiah was living when Assyria defeated the Northern Kingdom. The people were taken into exile in Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians. That is the darkness; those are the taskmasters who weigh upon the shoulders of the people of that area, including Galilee, to whom they were subjected and of whom Isaiah spoke (as referenced above in Isaiah, Chapter Nine). Isaiah had prophesied in part, "For those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, this light will arise." The light that arose was none other than our Lord, the light of the world, a light to every nation. Jesus began his public ministry attracting Jews and Gentiles, including Samaritans who lived in that area, in order to form a people of a New Covenant. Those who followed him, who became his disciples, after his death would begin spreading the “Good News’ throughout that area. Ultimately, through the work of St. Paul and other disciples who went throughout the Mediterranean basin attesting to Jesus as the light to the nations, the entire area would convert and enter the “light.” We hear, in today’s second reading, St. Paul speak of this truth in his letter to the people of Corinth. He had gone there and had established a Christian community. Traveling on to another location, he subsequently heard that there were divisions among the people: that some of the people said, "I'm a follower of Paul;" others, "I follow Apollo," and still others attest to Peter. There were some who recognized the source and the summit of faith and were followers of Jesus Christ. Paul, in his frustration, writes and says, "You don't understand. It wasn't I who was crucified for you; it was the Lord, Jesus Christ. Let there be no divisions among you. Do not follow human instruction or any individual but look at the light of all nations, Jesus Christ, and be formed in him." These divisions, unfortunately, were very real in Corinth and other Christian communities. Sometimes we experience similar divisions in our own time. For example, you'll hear people speak of the different devotions they practice. "I have devotion to the rosary; I pray it every day." Others say, "At the three o'clock hour, I pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy." Others say, "This coming Friday is First Friday; I follow very closely the devotion revealed to us by St. Margaret Mary, the Sacred Heart.” Others on the First Saturday venerate the Immaculate Heart of our Blessed Mother. So while some have these devotions, and all of them are wonderful, we should not allow our personal approach to Christ to cause distinctions or rivalry among us disciples. Sometimes you'll hear people say, "I like to participate in the Latin Mass like before Vatican II; that's when I can really focus on my prayer." Others say, "I love to hear the Mass said in English. Then I can truly understand the Word of God.” Once again, let us not be separated, but recognize that both of these Liturgies are valid, but they will touch individuals differently. For some, one more than the other will be inspiring, just the right prayer, that will enable them to come into a deeper relationship with the Lord in their prayer. However, they are not mutually exclusive. This week, when we go to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, it will be a very powerful experience of joining with the hundreds of thousands participating in this yearly pilgrimage of faith. Many in attendance will have different approaches to the same objective of proclaiming the value of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Some will carry banners saying, "Pray the Rosary." Others will have very graphic pictures of aborted fetuses. They think the images might shock people into supporting pro-life activities. Many have told me these images are offensive to them. However, no one can deny what they represent. The point is, all in attendance are focused on one thing, which is to proclaim the truth that each individual is created in the likeness of our loving God, with a distinct and a unique value unto themselves, and that all life is precious. Many will have different approaches, but each has one and the same purpose. This must also be true for us; as a faith community we individually will have our preferred prayers but, gathered at the Altar of Sacrifice, we share a common meal. We are of one heart and one mind in the knowledge of this gift from our loving God. We must be conscious of never letting our personal devotions, our approach to prayer, or other factors separate us. We seek common ground, recognizing the unique love and vocation God has for each of us. We focus on the Gospel of Jesus Christ that is the binding force and unity of our faith community. As members of the Body of Christ we go forth at the end of Mass commissioned to be the light of Christ in our portion of God’s Kingdom.

Teaching Our Children to Share Through Children’s Offering Envelopes

Teaching your children to share their time, talents and treasure from a young age is an important but sometimes difficult responsibility of parenthood. Here at the Partner Parishes, parents have an opportunity to teach their children the rewards of sharing their blessings through the Children’s Envelope program. Children’s envelopes recently were distributed in Faith Formation classes for grades 1 through 12. If your child did not receive his or her envelopes, please call the office, 724785-7781.

Would you like to join Fr. Tim and fellow parishioners as we journey to Washington, DC, for the March for Life? We would depart on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 10:00 a.m. and return Friday, Jan. 27. If you are interested or have questions, please call Fr. Tim at the church office, 724-785-7781. Space is limited. If you are unable to attend, EWTN will broadcast the Vigil Mass and the March for Life. Please see the EWTN Programming Guides in the back of both churches.
