The celebration of the Solemnity of The Epiphany of The Lord is so extraordinarily important in terms of the light that it sheds on God's plan to save all people, not just the Jewish people. For those who aren't familiar with it, the word "epiphany" is derived from a Greek word meaning “appearance or manifestation." It also means "revelation." In the celebration of the feast of Epiphany, it refers to the revelation of God's plan for the salvation of mankind. This is one of the extraordinary events that we commemorate in our celebration of the Advent and the Christmas seasons. By the way, the Christmas Season officially ends on Monday, Jan. 9, with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. Of course we have just celebrated an entire series of earth-shattering “revelations” in these seasons. The Angel Gabriel revealing to Zechariah that he and Elizabeth, advanced in age and thought to be barren, would have a child John who would be the precursor of the Lord. Gabriel’s annunciation to Mary that she would be the Mother of God, of Jesus, who would bring salvation to mankind. Now the Magi, pagan astronomers, who would come and bow down in homage to the newborn king. Monday in the Baptism of Jesus, the Spirit of God manifesting itself as a dove descending upon him, as his cousin John baptized Jesus in the river Jordan. All of these events, beyond our imagining in terms of their impact on human history, do not astonish us as they would if occurring directly in our lives. In other words, our yearly celebrations cause us to lose the intensity of our appreciation for God’s revelation of his plan for our salvation. This is why we must recognize in our youngest family members the wonder they express during the season of celebrating the incarnation of Christ. Even as the gifts begin to take precedence for the children, they maintain the wonder of the season. We should strive to be like what Jesus said in Mark’s Gospel about the children: “Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” I would like to share one of the stories which I use each year to help illustrate the significance of Epiphany. Maybe some have seen the DVD called "The Star of Bethlehem." We actually showed it last year in one of our Faith and Family Movie events. There is an individual—he's not an astronomer; he's an attorney by trade, but he studied the Bible extensively and got so caught up in this question about the star of Bethlehem: whether it really existed or not, that he began to study astronomy. When he achieved a depth of understanding about the stars, planets and constellations, he developed a reasonable explanation of what the wise men saw. He believes there was an actual star (a planet aligned with a star) that they followed. I'd just like to share a couple of the comments about the DVD he produced from those considered experts on astronomy. From the former chief of planetary astronomy for NASA and a technical editor of Sky and Telescope Magazine, the comments were, “The DVD was well-researched and reasonable.” From the magazine Christianity Today, it says, "An interesting look at the star." From the distinguished professor of Old Testament studies at the Dallas Theological Seminary: "It models the scientific method at its best," and from the former publisher and editor of Scientific American Magazine and the President of the American Association of Advanced Scientists, he said, "It's wide-ranging and insightful scholarship." What the author found was that by utilizing software that is readily available today, he could reconstruct the movement of the stars for every date in history back to the year 6000 B.C. He was able to pinpoint where the referenced stars and planets were located in the various constellations. He discovered what astronomers have known forever, that there are mathematical formulas, patterns in the movement of the stars and the planets. He could actually input dates and the software would display the arrangement of the stars and planets at the time. He chose from dates 2,000 years ago, roughly in the period when Christ was believed to have been born. He found that, indeed, the alignment of a certain star and one of the planets produced an extravagantly bright light, and that that particular celestial image appeared to travel from the east to the west. The astronomers, the three Wise Men, determined that the constellation’s alignment meant that the Lion of Judah would be born, the King of the Jews. They followed that star, arriving in Jerusalem where they met with Herod. They went before the Child and did him homage and followed the star by another route to their home. The author continues his explanation and lays out, in a very scientific way, other events, such as when the Lord died. He describes alignments of the stars at times such as during the Passover celebration, how the constellations were revealing God’s plan. His point is that the Father had a plan from the beginning and that plan included the celestial bodies. Not only was that plan revealed in the scriptures but it was actually written in the stars. As the author reminds us from Psalm 19: “The heavens proclaim the glory of God.” We as faithful disciples of Christ celebrate the Father’s plan by acknowledging the wonder of his gift of his very Son who revealed the plan for our salvation. If you would like to enter more fully into these great revelations and joyfully encounter the gift of God, such movies as the “The Star of Bethlehem” and “The Fourth Wise Man” are inspirational presentations of the truths of our faith. The videos are easily found and available to all for viewing.
