Our Partner Parishes are pleased to welcome several new families who joined our faith community during 2016. As we ring in the New Year we look forward to many more in 2017. Please offer a friendly smile as you greet them !

On behalf of our staff, all engaged in ministry and our faithful parishioners, let us not only wish one another a good and prosperous New Year but prayerfully support each other on our respective journeys. In the New Year we will continue to grow and prosper as Partner Parishes. We will strengthen our ministries and outreach to the broader community. We will construct a Parish Social Hall/ Rec Center for St. Peter which is planned for use and benefit of all. A few reminders about our celebration of Mary, Mother of God. Today is the Church’s oldest celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also designated as the World Day of Prayer for Peace. There can be no better way to start the New Year than to honor our Blessed Mother and to pray with her for peace in our world. As we pray together today at God’s invitation, let us be mindful of how the Holy Mother of God cares for the Church and the world that her Son died to save. We pray that through the intercession of Mary the Mother of God, you will be strengthened on your journey of faith. The sacred scriptures we hear proclaimed today continue our celebration of the Christmas season. We still have shepherds, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus at the manger in Bethlehem. The first reading recounts a very beautiful blessing from our ancient tradition, and Saint Paul proclaims that we are adopted children of God through Jesus Christ. Let us ponder these readings today, reflecting on them in our heart.

Let’s take a look back at 2016. It was a great year!

We begin with our Partner Parishes’ celebration of our Savior’s birth on Christmas 2015, when hundreds attended services at The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia.

Fr. Tim was installed as Pastor for the Partner Parishes of The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia on Jan. 31, 2016. Bishop Malesic celebrated Mass and joined our parish families in welcoming Fr. Tim. Nearly 300 witnessed the occasion. A celebratory reception was held after Mass.

Our Partner Parishes welcomed five new members (neophytes) in 2016. Above, 2016 neophyte Lauren Friedman was baptized, made her First Communion and was confirmed at our Easter Vigil at The Historic Church of St. Peter. At left, she displays her artwork of the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy she created for the Partner Parishes.

Our new Music Director, Annette Buffer, joined the Partner Parishes in 2016, bringing with her more than 40 years of experience directing both adult and children’s choirs.

The 2016 Diocesan Day of Mercy was held at The Historic Church of St. Peter. Lots of volunteers turned out to clear brush from hillsides, weed gardens, clean up cemeteries, and work on the interior walls of the church. Our volunteers are priceless!

Above, Fr. Tim celebrates the Easter Vigil Mass. More than 900 people attended our Easter weekend services.

Above, Sister James Ann Germuska received the 2016 Outstanding Human Service Organization Award on behalf of Crosskeys Human Services from Bishop Malesic at the 18th Annual Catholic Charities Salt & Light Awards Dinner in April. Above right, Margaret Peters, Eva Giannetti and Diane Sheridan take a selfie photo with Bishop Malesic at the awards dinner.

Our hearts were sad as we said goodbye to Fr. Jim Petrovsky, but we were happy for him at his new assignment as Pastor of St. Joan of Arc Church in Farmington. We welcomed Fr. Alvin Cabungcal, who arrived from Immaculate Conception Parish in Irwin as the Parochial Vicar for the Partner Parishes of The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia and for St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Our Brownsville Catholic Padres basketball varsity team for grades 7-8 returned for its second year in 2016, joined by our new junior varsity team for grades 5-6. Go, Padres!

Fourteen second-graders from The Historic Church of St. Peter and St. Cecilia made their First Communion in 2016, the largest class in several preceding years.

The Historic Church of St. Peter got a new set of wheels in 2016, a golf cart generously donated by a parishioner. The golf cart is available to assist anyone who has difficulty getting from the parking lot to the church door. Several volunteers drive the golf cart and it has to make multiple runs for almost all church services and functions!

As the 2016-2017 school year began, Fr. Tim commissioned the Faith Formations teachers with a special blessing during Mass at The Historic Church of St. Peter. The parish established a special Youth Mass to encourage more participation by our youth in our Masses and other services. Our Faith Formation program added the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd class for children ages 3-5.

Bishop Malesic celebrated All Souls’ Day Mass at The Historic Church of St. Peter as part of our Remembrance for the 66 deceased loved ones who passed away over the past year. Family and friends received a memorial candle, above left, with their loved one’s name to keep. Above, Bishop Malesic sprinkles Holy Water as he blessed the graves surrounding the church during the outside service prior to Mass. At left, participants in the outdoor candlelight service before Mass pray for the souls of the departed.
