“Freedom is not won by passive acceptance of suffering.

Freedom is won by a struggle against suffering.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1967) What I’ve grown to love and appreciate even more about Dr. King as I’ve gotten older is not that he was a beacon of hope for millions, which he was.

Not that he was instrumental in our fight for civil rights, because he was that too. But that he was a flawed man. A man with fear. A man with doubts. A man who indulged in temptation. Especially towards the end before he was murdered. That’s why this play is so beautiful and profound. It allows us to explore this icon on the last night of his life as just one of us. Guided by a remarkable woman who constantly keeps Dr. King on his toes. The anxiety, the joy, and hope we see play out in this story should inspire us all to remember that perfection isn’t what makes us capable of great things but that we are able to live with and overcome our own faults to help not just ourselves, but our community. That’s what made Dr. King powerful. It reminds me that with all the many missteps I’ve made and the insecurities I feel, I can still do good. And after these past 20 months of pain and loss we’ve experienced as a community, we need to overcome our own faults as one to push to a better future. To struggle against that suffering. To a Freedom we all should crave.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE The Hippodrome Theatre is a first-class regional theatre and artistic space committed to excellence in North Florida and creates programming that reflects and elevates the diverse cultures and perspectives of our region as well as create and maintain ongoing engagement with our community.

But what is a regional theater?

Regional theater is a permanent nonprofit professional theatre company that has established roots outside the major theatre centers. Besides bringing first-rate theatre to our region, we often have programs to nurture local talent and to encourage new plays of special regional interest.

But what makes professional theater different from community theater or educational theatre?

In a professional theatre everyone associated with a production, from directors, technicians, designers, and actors, are paid for their time and talent. And while community and educational theater provide opportunities for the community to take an active role in all phases of theater, our professional regional theater hires professionals who are highly trained and, at least during the production, the production is their full time job. This allows the theater to produce high quality productions very quickly - in less than three weeks!

As the artistic center of downtown Gainesville, The Hippodrome, your regional professional theater, will continue to search for new forms and new theatrical voices, support local community talent, bring in the highest quality professionals, and continue to encourage creativity and diversity in all of its performance spaces.

WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP Katori Hall (Author) is a playwright and performer hailing from Memphis, Tennessee. Her award-winning play HOODOO LOVE premiered at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 2007. It was developed under Lynn Nottage as part of the theatre’s 2006 Mentor Project. HOODOO LOVE received three AUDELCO nominations (Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, August Wilson Playwright Award). Her other plays include: REMEMBRANCE, HURT VILLAGE, SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY MORNING, THE MOUNTAINTOP, ON THE CHITLIN’ CIRCUIT, and FREEDOM TRAIN (KCACTF ten minute play national finalist). Her work has been developed and presented at the following venues: the American Repertory Theatre, Kennedy Center, Cherry Lane Theatre, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Schomburg Center, BRICLab, Women’s Project, World Financial Center, Lark Play Development Center, New Professional Theatre, The O’Neill, the Juilliard School, Stanford University, and Columbia University. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lecompte du Nouy Prize, North Manhattan Arts Alliance Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts Commission Grant, New Professional Theatre’s Writers’ Festival award, Fellowship of Southern Writers Bryan Family Award in Drama, New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship in Playwriting and Screenwriting, Royal Court Theatre Residency, and the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award. She has also been a Kennedy Center Playwriting Fellow. As an actor, her credits include “Law & Order: SVU,” THE PRESIDENT’S PUPPETS (The Public), GROWING UP A SLAVE (American Place Theatre), INCIDENTS IN THE LIFE OF A SLAVE GIRL (American Place Theatre), the world premiere of AMERIKA (Theatre de la Jeune Lune/American Repertory Theatre), SPRING AWAKENING (Moscow Art Theatre School), AIN’T SUPPOSED TO DIE A NATURAL DEATH (Classical Theatre of Harlem), SCHOOLED (WOW Café Theatre), and BLACK GIRL (Sande Shurin Theatre).

As a journalist, her work has been published in "The Boston Globe," "Essence," "Newsweek," and "The Commercial Appeal." She graduated from Columbia University in 2003 with a major in African-American Studies and Creative Writing. She was awarded top departmental honors from the university’s Institute for Research in African-American Studies (IRAAS). In 2005, she graduated from the American Repertory Theatre Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in Acting. She is now a student in the Juilliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program. WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP Ryan George*^ (Director) Ryan George is an artist, creator, and director who currently lives in New York City. He received his BFA in Theater Performance at UF and is a proud company member of The Hippodrome Theatre.

His past directing credits include The Royale, the digital streaming production of Proof of Love, as well as staged readings of The Brothers Size and White. All done here at, and for, the Hipp. He’s excited and proud to be presenting this wonderful play to Gainesville.

Chaz Rose* (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr) Chaz is thrilled to be making his Hippodrome debut and much-anticipated return to live theatre. His off-Broadway credits include Black Angels Over Tuskegee and She Like Girls (GLAAD Award winner).

He produced and appeared in the film Writer’s Block, starring Bryan Cranston. Other credits include Ragtime, Little Shop of Horrors, Full Monty, Topdog/ Underdog, Elf, The Little Mermaid, Court-Martial at Ft. Devens, Shout Sister Shout, Prom and Our Town.

He is a graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a proud member of Actors’ Equity.

He is thankful for the never-ending support he receives from his beautiful wife, family, and friends.

WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP DeShawn White* (Camae) What does it mean to be an “artist” in this day and age? DeShawn White is a Washington DC native and a Brooklyn, NY transplant still trying to figure that out. On that journey she has been a principal performer in 20+ commercials and print ads. Some of her TV/Film credits include recurring on HBO’s The Deuce, Hulu’s Wu Tang: An American Saga, Law and Order: SVU, and alongside Edward Norton in the film Motherless Brooklyn.

Not only is she a force to be reckoned with in front of the camera, she also demonstrates great skill and love for all things behind the lens. She has directed episodes of various web series that have found homes on streaming platforms, produced and directed 3 short films that have found their way into prestigious film festivals, and produced a one woman show performed to a sold-out crowd entitled: Reflections of A Dream Deferred.

The Mountaintop is DeShawn’s very first Equity Regional Theatre credit and she is extremely honored to be performing Katori Hall’s work at the Hippodrome Theatre.

She would like to acknowledge all of the folks over at Stella Adler, including her classmates, for teaching her to love the theater again; Her 12 plants for giving her something to take care of other than herself; and her family Andrea, Glenn, Violet, Destiny and Desiree for their love and support always.

WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP Amber Wilkerson*^ (Stage Manager) Amber is a professional Stage & Event Manager. She has been affiliated with the Hippodrome Theatre since 2003, first as Properties Intern, then as Assistant Stage Manager before moving to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. She returned to the Hipp as the AEA Stage Manager of A Christmas Carol in 2005 & 2006. She has worked professionally for The Metropolitan Opera (NYC), The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, NJ), North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, MA), and Times Square New Year’s Eve 2006-2010 (NYC). In 2006, Amber served as a Production Assistant on the Broadway musical, Grey Gardens. Amber spent five years working with Manhattan Theatre Club as a Subscriber Services Representative and two years as a House Manager at Playwrights Horizons, both in New York City. Originally from Maryland, she holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Salisbury University. Amber is a proud member of the Hippodrome Company and the Actors’ Equity Association.

Amanda Nipper (Sound Designer/Video Designer) Amanda is thrilled to be in her ninth season at the Hippodrome. Other regional credits include Cape Fear Regional Theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and The Parchman Hour: Songs and Stories of the ’61 Freedom Riders as the mix engineer in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Dorset Theatre Festival: Good People, The Whore and Mr. Moore, Boeing Boeing, and Deathtrap. Keep moving forward.

Warren Goodwin (Technical Director) Warren joined the Hippodrome in 2004 as a carpenter in the scene shop, and assumed the role of Master Carpenter in 2006. In addition to helping build over a hundred of Hippodrome sets, Warren served as co-scenic designer on The Christians and The Wolves. He is thrilled to be currently serving as Technical Director. In his free time, Warren enjoys painting, and is an accomplished local artist. You can often find his work on display next door at Maude’s Cafe.

Bill Boothman (Lead Electrician/Video Designer) Prior to joining the Hipp, Bill worked with the stagehand’s union IATSE local 115 in Jacksonville, FL. Bill prefers neck down work, but to stay employed will occasionally dip their toe into design.

“We’ve all had to branch out and learn new skills in this new era we all find ourselves in.”, says Bill. Recent Hippodrome design credits include video designer for Souvenir, This Wonderful Life, and A Show Must Go On. Bill is a synthesizer hobbyist.

WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP Robert P. Robins (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) Bob is enjoying his 35th season at the Hippodrome. During his tenure here at the Hippodrome, Bob has provided lighting designs for over 300 Main Stage productions. Over the course of his time at the Hippodrome, Bob has held many titles such as lighting designer, sound engineer, live audio mixer, stage manager for Hippodrome Mainstage; touring productions and Theatre For Young Audiences tours, pyrotechnician, lightboard operator, and bartender. Today, in addition to lighting designer and production manager, Bob is also the facility manager of the 110 year old building that the Hippodrome calls home. Bob also provides freelance lighting designs around the country when he can. He is also an Actors’ Equity Association stage manager, and proudly holds a BFA in Theatre Production from the University of Florida. See more of Bob’s work at www.robertrobins.com Mihai Ciupe (Scenic Designer) Originally from Romania, Mihai Ciupe received a double MFA degree in costume and set design from Carnegie Mellon University and his BFA from Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. During his MFA he was awarded the George Kimberly Scene Design Award and the Oren Parker Award in Design and Production. Prior to the United States he was resident scenographer at The National Theatre of Cluj, Romania. During his former years he traveled extensively in Europe in tours with the shows that he designed, getting exposure to the various schools of theatre from England, Scotland, Hungary, France, and Yugoslavia. As a designer he worked with some of the greatest Romanian directors: Gabor Tompa, Alexandru Dabija, Iulian Visa, Mihai Manutiu, Victor Ion Frunza. In 1991 he received a scholarship to attend The London International Festival of Theatre. Since 1995 he is a member of The United Association of the Romanian Fine Artists in the scenography section. In 1999 he joined the theatre and dance faculty at University of Florida, where he was assigned to start the graduate program in Set Design. By 2013 his graduate students won The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Award three times: in 2005, 2007 and 2013. During his tenure at UF he has built a strong artistic relationship with The Hippodrome State Theatre, the only professional theatre in North Central Florida, where he has designed the sets for over twenty-five productions. He has continued to work professionally at national and international level.

WHO’S WHO IN THE MOUNTAINTOP Erika Capin (Properties Designer) Erika is very excited to be working on her third production at the hippodrome. She has been involved in theatre since childhood & has done a little bit of everything including acting, directing, stage managing, painting sets, and even running the spotlight, but she finally found her true calling in the wonderful world of props. Her artistic creations have appeared on the stages of several local theatres in many shows over the years – most recently in Lone Star Spirits, The Blue Period of Milton Van der Spuy, Mamma Mia, Gypsy, Time of My Life and Ins and Outs. When she isn’t making props or working at her day job, Erika also designs jewelry and takes care of an assortment of rescued animals.

Erin Jester (Costume Designer-in-Residence/Shop Supervisor) is delighted to make her costume design debut at the Hippodrome with The Mountaintop. Erin is a UF alumna and a former Hippodrome costumes intern (2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons), and last year received her MFA in costume design and technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Previous costume design credits include productions of Cabaret, Much Ado About Nothing and Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. Other credits include costume historical research for North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, historical costume reproduction for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS, and costume coordination for the Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker and the independent film series 12 Westerns in 12 Months, directed by Travis Mills.
