DIRECTOR’S NOTE The Time - 1873. The place, Paris during the Reign of Terror.

Well that doesn’t sound like the start of a comedy.

And yet, author Lauren Gunderson has written a brilliant, out of time, mostly comedic exploration of characters based on real women, struggling in real situations to raise their voices for equal rights for men, women, and the enslaved peoples in the French colonial territories. What could possibly go wrong?

As we all know, pretty much everything. So who were these women?

Olympe de Gouges - was a bad-ass feminist who worked to improve the rights and conditions of women, and she wrote prolifically about this, most famously in her Declaration of the Rights of Woman. De Gouges also wrote plays – performed by her own theatre company – calling for an end to slavery and raising awareness of social issues.

Charlotte Corday - So, yes, she was definitely a murderer. A sympathizer of the moderates, during the French Revolution she was determined to kill Jean-Paul Marat whom she held responsible for the Reign of Terror. Corday believed she was saving the Revolution from becoming too radicalized.

Marie-Antoinette - What’s she doing in this play? While certainly not a supporter of equal rights, and her outright rejection of reform would not go down well in history, she actually played a prominent political role by negotiating secretly with monarchist factions and with her brother to save the monarchy. The French were not amused by her use of power and, well, we all know what happened next.

Marianne Angelle - this badass woman is not one real person but a composite figure, based on real free black women revolutionaries in Saint-Domingue, which is the nation we now call Haiti. Every character in this play wants to be her. She is our rock and our anchor in this play.

So why should we care about these women and this time period? While most of these women failed to reach their goals in their own time, many of the rights women throughout the world enjoy today match up perfectly with the rights Olympe de Gouges espoused in her pamphlet. It’s clear the Revolution played a major role in influencing women’s rights for centuries to come.

These women and their bravery made our world a better place today. So we produce this play today to celebrate the brave women, the revolutionists, in our own community. The ones who push us forward, who won’t take no for an answer, and who will make the world a better place today and tomorrow.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE The epic yet fascinating tale of The Revolutionists and the Hippodrome I know we are all sick and tired of Pandemic stories, but that is where the foundation of this production of The Revolutionists starts. In January of 2021, when the Hippodrome was still closed to the public, we were given permission by the Actor’s union (AEA) for the first time to film a production (The Revolutionists) with the actors together in the same room and on our stage. This was a huge opportunity for us - a first step to coming back to live theater.

In order to do this, we had to do all rehearsals online or outside, only coming into the theater for a couple of tech rehearsals and 3 days of filming.

Fine, no problem, we said.

Our actors rehearsed outside in 40 degree temperatures (thanks FL for being abnormally cold that month) in my backyard, and sometimes my garage when it rained (always with the door open of course). But we were all determined to bring this story to our community. We believed in it that much!

Sadly, we had what turned out to be a false positive test result, and we had to cancel the filming which meant canceling the show. For those of you who saw it, our A Show Must Go On Cabaret (which we put together in 4 days) was our brilliant substitute for our Hipp and Home season that year.

We planned to try again in May, but changing rules forced us again to cancel.

Now, today, we are finally here. We made it! This is a moment of pure joy for the cast and crew to finally be here today, able to share this story with you.

We believe in this play. We believe in the complex and moving story it tells. We believe in the women and the spirit that it celebrates. And we knew our community would want to see it.

So get ready for a wild, inspiring, and wonderful ride with The Revolutionists.

WHO’S WHO IN THE REVOLUTIONISTS Lauren Gunderson Lauren has been one of the most produced playwrights in America since 2015, topping the list twice including 2019/20. She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for I AND YOU and THE BOOK OF WILL, the winner of the Lanford Wilson Award and the Otis Guernsey New Voices Award, a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and John Gassner Award for Playwriting, and a recipient of the Mellon Foundation’s Residency with Marin Theatre Company. She studied Southern Literature and Drama at Emory University, and Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School where she was a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship.

Her newest play THE CATASTROPHIST, about her husband virologist Nathan Wolfe, premiered digitally in January 2021. She co-authored the Miss Bennet plays with Margot Melcon, and her audioplay THE HALF-LIFE OF MARIE CURIE is available on Audible.com. Past credits include; Ronette in Little Shop of Horrors; Nettie in The Color Purple, Tiana Vocalist at Hong Kong Disneyland, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joes Cafe, Sophisticated Ladies and the Off-Broadway show, ‘Sistas the Musical!’ She’s thankful to God, her parents, family, friends and her precious husband for their support and love. Elise Hudson* (Marie Antoinette) Elise is ecstatic to be playing her dream role written by her dream playwright in her first show at The Hipp! Elise is a Nashville native currently residing mostly in Philly and sometimes elsewhere, depending on the day. Favorite credits include The Show Off (St. Clement’s, Off-Broadway), A Christmas Carol (Trinity Repertory Company), A Moon for the Misbegotten (Playhouse on Park), The Taming (Cape May Stage), Laughing Stock (Peterborough Players), Twelfth Night (Philly Shakes), and Coriolanus (Commonwealth Shakespeare Company). WHO’S WHO IN THE REVOLUTIONISTS Laura Hodos* (Olympe de Gouges) Laura Hodos is an actor, singer, improviser, and cabarista, and is thrilled to return to The Hipp!

Audiences may remember her from her cabarets A Show Must Go On: A Hipp-Hipp-Beret and By the Light of the Silvery Screen, as well as Miracle on 34th Street for the holidays! She’s been honored with the Suzi Bass, New Times, BroadwayWorld, and Silver Palm awards, as well as being a seventime Carbonell nominee. She’s been a soloist with the Orlando Philharmonic, Jacksonville Symphony, and Sarasota Orchestra, as well as performing with Orlando Shakes, Mad Cow, Asolo Rep, freeFall Theatre, American Stage, Winter Park Playhouse, Orlando Rep, Orlando Theatre Project, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Slow Burn, MNM, Actors’ Playhouse, The Wick, GableStage, TheatreZone, Alhambra, and Island City Stage. She’s performed at The Duplex and Don’t Tell Mama in NYC, along with Radio City and Lincoln Center. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with her devilishly good-looking husband and two very handsome cats. Stephanie Lynge (Director) is an accomplished actor, director, producer, teacher and coach.

Stephanie has enjoyed a career of more than 27 years in professional theater and education.

Since 2013 she has worked on more than 50 productions at the Hippodrome either as an actor, director, choreographer, or dramaturg. She was seen on stage in The Wolves and Let The Right One In. Her other acting credits include performances in New York City on Broadway and Off Broadway at Lincoln Center, BAM, Jean Cocteau Rep, and the York Theater Workshop. Regional theaters include Freefall, Goodspeed Opera House, Sacramento Music Circus, Pasadena Playhouse, Rep Theater of St. Louis, Flat Rock Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Seaside Music Theater, as well as several National Tours.

Directing credits include the Hippodrome’s Every Christmas Story Ever Told, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Sex With Strangers, The Blameless, and Lone Star Spirits as well as plays at the 45th Street Theater (NYC), New York Musical Theater Festival, and the University of Florida.

Stephanie has served as a Visiting professor at Indiana University, and an Adjunct professor at New Jersey City University and University of Florida. After receiving her BA in Musical Theater from Indiana University, Stephanie lived and worked as an actor in New York City for over 20 years. Stephanie holds a Master of Fine Arts in acting from University of Florida and is a proud member of Actors Equity Association since 1996.

WHO’S WHO IN THE REVOLUTIONISTS Amber Wilkerson*^ (AEA Stage Manager) Amber is a professional Stage & Event Manager. She has been affiliated with the Hippodrome Theatre since 2003, first as Properties Intern, then as Assistant Stage Manager before moving to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. She returned to the Hipp as the AEA Stage Manager of A Christmas Carol in 2005 & 2006. She has worked professionally for The Metropolitan Opera (NYC), The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, NJ), North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, MA), and Times Square New Year’s Eve 2006-2010 (NYC). In 2006, Amber served as a Production Assistant on the Broadway musical, Grey Gardens. Amber spent five years working with Manhattan Theatre Club as a Subscriber Services Representative and two years as a House Manager at Playwrights Horizons, both in New York City. Originally from Maryland, she holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Salisbury University. Amber is a proud member of the Hippodrome Company and the Actors’ Equity Association.

Robert P. Robins (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) Bob is enjoying his 35th season at the Hippodrome. During his tenure here at the Hippodrome, Bob has provided lighting designs for over 300 Main Stage productions. Over the course of his time at the Hippodrome, Bob has held many titles such as lighting designer, sound engineer, live audio mixer, stage manager for Hippodrome Mainstage; touring productions and Theatre For Young Audiences tours, pyrotechnician, lightboard operator, and bartender. Today, in addition to lighting designer and production manager, Bob is also the facility manager of the 110 year old building that the Hippodrome calls home. Bob also provides freelance lighting designs around the country when he can. He is also an Actors’ Equity Association stage manager, and proudly holds a BFA in Theatre Production from the University of Florida.

Warren Goodwin (Technical Director) Warren joined the Hippodrome in 2004 as a carpenter in the scene shop, and assumed the role of Master Carpenter in 2006. In addition to helping build over a hundred of Hippodrome sets, Warren served as co-scenic designer on The Christians and The Wolves. He is thrilled to be currently serving as Technical Director. In his free time, Warren enjoys painting, and is an accomplished local artist. You can often find his work on display next door at Maude’s Cafe.

WHO’S WHO IN THE REVOLUTIONISTS Bill Boothman (Lead Electrician) Prior to joining the Hipp Bill worked with the stagehand’s union IATSE local 115 in Jacksonville, FL. Bill prefers neck down work, but to stay employed will occasionally dip their toe into design. “We’ve all had to branch out and learn new skills in this new era we all find ourselves in.”, says Bill. Recent Hippodrome design credits include video designer for Souvenir, This Wonderful Life, and A Show Must Go On. Bill is a synthesizer hobbyist.

Amanda Nipper (Sound Designer) Amanda is thrilled to be in her ninth season at the Hippodrome. Other regional credits include Cape Fear Regional Theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and The Parchman Hour: Songs and Stories of the ’61 Freedom Riders as the mix engineer in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Dorset Theatre Festival: Good People, The Whore and Mr. Moore, Boeing Boeing, and Deathtrap. Keep moving forward.

Erin Jester (Costume Designer/Shop Supervisor) is delighted to return to the Hippodrome for its 49th season. Erin is a UF alumna and a former Hippodrome costumes intern (2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons), and in 2020 received her MFA in costume design and technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Previous costume design credits include productions of Cabaret, Much Ado About Nothing and Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. Other credits include costume historical research for North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, historical costume reproduction for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS, and costume coordination for the Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker and the independent film series 12 Westerns in 12 Months, directed by Travis Mills.

Susan Schuld (Accent/Dialect and Text Coach) has been acting and vocal coaching nationally for over 25 years and is an Associate Professor of Voice and Speech here at the School of Theatre and Dance. M.F.A in Acting from Rutgers University, Designated Linklater Teacher, Certified Teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and a National Michael Chekhov Association Teacher.

WHO’S WHO IN THE REVOLUTIONISTS Mihai Ciupe (Scenic Designer) Originally from Romania, Mihai Ciupe received a double MFA degree in costume and set design from Carnegie Mellon University and his BFA from Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. During his MFA he was awarded the George Kimberly Scene Design Award and the Oren Parker Award in Design and Production. Prior to the United States he was resident scenographer at The National Theatre of Cluj, Romania. During his former years he traveled extensively in Europe in tours with the shows that he designed, getting exposure to the various schools of theatre from England, Scotland, Hungary, France, and Yugoslavia. As a designer he worked with some of the greatest Romanian directors: Gabor Tompa, Alexandru Dabija, Iulian Visa, Mihai Manutiu, Victor Ion Frunza. In 1991 he received a scholarship to attend The London International Festival of Theatre. Since 1995 he is a member of The United Association of the Romanian Fine Artists in the scenography section. In 1999 he joined the theatre and dance faculty at University of Florida, where he was assigned to start the graduate program in Set Design. By 2013 his graduate students won The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Award three times: in 2005, 2007 and 2013. During his tenure at UF he has built a strong artistic relationship with The Hippodrome State Theatre, the only professional theatre in North Central Florida, where he has designed the sets for over twenty-five productions. He has continued to work professionally at national and international level.
