WHO’S WHO IN MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET DIRECTOR’S NOTES Everyone sitting in this theater shares something special. No matter our age, we all grew up with music that’s been heavily influenced by Rock and Roll. This music has been the soundtrack for our entire lives, performed by musicians who owe their careers to innovations of Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. In this rudimentary, one-room studio, producer Sam Phillips became one of the most important figures in 20th-century American culture. He was the vital creative innovator at the epicenter of establishing rock n’ roll as the fresh, new sound that would expand across our planet brought forth in large part to Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley. On Tuesday December 4, 1956, a twist of fate brought these 4 rock and roll legends to Sun Records, the exact spot where each had been discovered by Sam Phillips. The jam session that followed (and luckily recorded by Sam Phillips) retains its historical significance as a landmark event: the “Mount Rushmore of Rock n’ Roll.” Million Dollar Quartet is a memory play in which Sam takes you back in time to those exact moments when each of these 4 legends discovered their own unique sound. It is also a tale of passion, broken promises, secrets and celebrations where the facades of fame are peeled back and you get to know the men behind the music which has affected each and every one of us in this room. Plus, I bet we’ll get you out of your chair and dancing before you go home.

Enjoy! Hugh Hysell* (Director)
