A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder

Boisterous dance numbers. Hilarious staged deaths. Romantic rivals. And a plot for revenge that proves all is fair in love and murder. This critically acclaimed musical tells the story of Monty Navarro, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by – you guessed it – eliminating the eight pesky D’Ysquith family relatives who stand in his way. Laughter, whimsy, and cut-throat payback ensues in what Time Out Chicago called “One of the best Broadway musicals in years.”

The Broadway hit swept up four Tonys, and was the most nominated show of the 2014 Broadway season, pulling in more award nominations than per-show death scenes, which, for this murderous romp, is no small feat. Adding to the comedic complexity, the victims of the numerous murders are all played by just one actor. Also, no small feat.

As the bodies stack up, you might start to think of Monty as a monster. But as each succeeding D’Ysquith family member reveals his or herself to be more callous and self-serving than the last, it becomes less clear who is the true villain in this delightfully deadly musical.

As director, I am always eager to bring these big Broadway musicals to the Hippodrome. In a real way, we are ‘translating’ the big version of these shows into something more intimate and intriguing for our audiences, who expect and enjoy the intimacy of our theater space.

So get ready to laugh and perch on the edge of your seats to see what happens next.

The Hippodrome is thrilled to have you here with us for our season Beyond Limits as we celebrate the spirit that founded the artistic heart of our community, beating right here in downtown.

From its inception in 1973, the Hippodrome Theatre has brought stories to the stage that explore and celebrate the human condition. 50 years ago six determined individuals, (Marilyn Wall, Bruce Cornwell, Greg Von Hausch, Kerry (McKinney) Oliver-Smith, Mary Hausch , Orin Wechsberg) took a leap into the unknown, creating a theater that challenged expectations.

Throughout its history, The Hippodrome has pushed the limits of storytelling, creating memorable productions like Equus, The Elephant Man, Amadeus, The Royal, and The Mountaintop. The Hippodrome Improvisational Teen Theatre (HITT), Open Stages and TYA (Theater for Young Audiences) brought innovative works beyond the walls of the theater and into the Gainesville schools and community, proving that theater is an important tool that can be used to explore deep issues, educate, and spark discussion.

The Hippodrome Theatre’s 50th season Beyond Limits continues storytelling outside the norm, producing stories that challenge our assumptions, and reminding all of us that there are no limits to what we can do and who we can be. The Hippodrome also continues to explore new ways of bringing storytelling and the community together. By pushing the limits through its New Works Festival celebrating Floridian voices and stories, our educational Summer Spectacular and outreach programs creating the artists of tomorrow, and the Hipp Unplugged series that fosters new playwrights, new directors, and helps us grow the talent right here in our community.

Our founding history and energetic present will continue to launch us beyond all limits as we move into the future. Come take this journey with us as we leap joyfully into our next 50 years.

AUTHOR’S BIO

Robert L. Freedman

Robert L. Freedman won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Book of a Musical for the Tony-winning Best Musical of 2014, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Score, with composer and co-lyricist Steven Lutvak, with whom he shared the 2014 Drama Desk Award for Best Lyrics. Among his television career highlights, Robert won the Writers Guild Award for HBO’s A Deadly Secret, and was nominated for an Emmy Award and a Writers Guild award for the miniseries Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows. Other teleplays include Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, for which he received a third Writers Guild nomination; What Makes A Family, which received a GLAAD Award and for which Robert was a Humanitas finalist; What Love Sees, winner of the Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Television Festival; as well as the highly-rated true crime dramas Murder In The Hamptons, The Pastor’s Wife, Honor Thy Mother, and Bitter Blood. In 2006, Freedman and Lutvak received both the Fred Ebb Award for songwriting and the Kleban Award for lyric writing for their work on the musicals A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and Campaign of the Century. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Robert has B.A. in Theatre from UCLA and an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing and Musical Theatre from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Robert is currently at work on a film for HBO and Sundance Films. He is married to actress Jean Kauffman, and they are the proud parents of Max Freedman, a writer and community activist living in Brooklyn.

Steven Lutvak

Steven Lutvak made his Broadway debut with his score to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love And Murder, for which he supplied the music, and co-wrote the lyrics with Robert L. Freedman. A Gentleman’s Guide won the Drama League, the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama Desk and the Tony Awards for Best Musical of 2014. Since its successful run of over two years on Broadway, there have been two National Tours (the second of which is currently on the road), and productions have already been seen in Sweden, Japan, and the first Chinese language production opens this December. Previously, Lutvak and Freedman won the Kleban and Fred Ebb Songwriting Awards for their songs to A Gentleman’s Guide, which was originally developed at the Sundance Theater Lab, and which premiered as a co-production at the Hartford Stage, and the Old Globe in San Diego. Lutvak and Freedman previously wrote the musical Campaign of the Century, which won the California Musical Theater Competition from the Beverly Hills Theater Guild. Campaign was originally commissioned by The American Musical Theater of San Jose, and was later presented in a concert version at Chicago’s Humanities Festival, and featured in the New York Music Theater Festival. Other musicals include Almost September, which premiered on the mainstage of the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, and was subsequently produced at Missouri Repertory Theater, and won eight Bay Area Critics’ Circle Awards for its run at Theater Works in Palo Alto, California. The Wayside Motor Inn, his adaptation of a play by A. R. Gurney, began as a commission by the Harmony Project of the National Alliance for Musical Theater, for which Lutvak was named Artist-in-Residence at the Eugene O’Neill Opera Music/Theater Conference. His Esmeralda premiered at the Studio Theater of the St. Louis Rep, and was awarded a New American Work grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Lutvak scored Off-Broadway’s Hannah Senesh, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award, and was later produced at the Zephyr Theatre in Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Theatre Company, the Baltimore Center Stage, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and more recently at Penguin Repertory Theatre. The production also toured throughout Canada and Israel. During the 1994 Toronto Summer Arts Festival, a revue of Steven’s songs was presented as part of Garth Drabinsky and Live Entertainment of Canada’s New Voices Series. Other works of his have been performed at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, La Mama ETC, Weill Recital Hall and the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Lutvak wrote the title track to Paramount’s hit film, “Mad Hot Ballroom”, and, the score to “Anything But Love”, which starred Eartha Kitt and Andrew McCarthy, and was released by the Samuel Goldwyn Company.

As a singer/songwriter, Lutvak has performed his songs around the country, including such prestigious New York venues as Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, Rainbow and Stars and the Russian Tea Room. His two CD’s are called THE TIME IT TAKES and AHEAD OF MY HEART. He is also the winner of the Johnny Mercer Emerging American Songwriting Award, the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, and is the only two-time recipient of the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Grant. Steven is proud to now be an Adjunct Professor at his alma mater, the NYU Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program.

And now that several of his songs are discussed in David Jenness and Don Velsey’s “Classic American Popular Song”, the follow-up to Alec Wilder’s classic book, “American Popular Song”, Steven Lutvak’s place in the American Popular Songbook is even more firmly planted.Steven lives in New York City with his husband, choreographer Michael McGowan, and their daughter, Eliot Rose Lutvak-McGowan.

Lukas Poost* (Monty Navarro)

Lukas Poost (He/him) started his career crisscrossing the nation rescuing the princess from a dragon-guarded tower beside his trusty steed Donkey (Broadway National Tour of Shrek the Musical). More recently he’s inherited a number of shoe factories and made several pairs of Kinky Boots (Gateway, 3-D Theatricals, Moonlight Amphitheatre); he’s been looking into the future to steal Shakespeare’s next big hit in Something Rotten (Cape Rep); grifting his way across the French Riviera as a Dirty Rotten Scoundrel (Maltz Jupiter); and delivering meals to the elderly citizens of New York City to keep them safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kelly Atkins*^ (Miss Shingle)

Gentleman’s Guide is Kelly’s fifteenth production at the Hippodrome. Most recently she was seen starring in Living on Love as La Diva Raquel de Angelis and in Souvenir as Florence Foster Jenkins. Past Hipp favorites include The Toxic Avenger, Hand to God, The Great American Trailer Park Musical and the title roles in Alice in Wonderland and Scrooge in Rouge. As a member of Actor’s Equity Association for 25 years, Kelly has performed many leading ladies at theatres around the country, ranging from classic like The King and I, Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Pirates of Penzance, as well as contemporary musical comedies such as Mamma Mia, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Victor/Victoria, Little Shop of Horrors, …Spelling Bee, and Hairspray. Stephanie Lynge^ (Director)

Stephanie Lynge (Director) is an accomplished actor, director, producer, teacher and coach. Stephanie has enjoyed a career of more than 27 years in professional theater and education. Since 2013 she has worked on more than 50 productions at the Hippodrome either as an actor, director, choreographer, or dramaturg. She was seen on stage in The Wolves and Let The Right One In. Her other acting credits include performances in New York City on Broadway and Off Broadway at Lincoln Center, BAM, Jean Cocteau Rep, and the York Theater Workshop. Regional theaters include Freefall, Goodspeed Opera House, Sacramento Music Circus, Pasadena Playhouse, Rep Theater of St. Louis, Flat Rock Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Seaside Music Theater, as well as several National Tours. Directing credits include the Hippodrome’s Every Christmas Story Ever Told, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Sex With Strangers, The Blameless, and Lone Star Spirits as well as plays at the 45th Street Theater (NYC), New York Musical Theater Festival, and the University of Florida. Stephanie has served as a Visiting professor at Indiana University, and an Adjunct professor at New Jersey City University and University of Florida. After receiving her BA in Musical Theater from Indiana University, Stephanie lived and worked as an actor in New York City for over 20 years. Stephanie holds a Master of Fine Arts in acting from University of Florida and is a proud member of Actors Equity Association since 1996.

Amanda Nipper (Sound Designer / Mix Engineer) Amanda is thrilled to be in her tenth season at the Hippodrome. Amber Wilkerson*^ (Stage Manager) Amber is a professional Stage & Event Manager. She has been affiliated with the Hippodrome Theatre since 2003, first as Properties Intern, then as Assistant Stage Manager before moving to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. She returned to the Hipp as the AEA Stage Manager of A Christmas Carol in 2005 & 2006. She has worked professionally for The Metropolitan Opera (NYC), The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, NJ), North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, MA), and Times Square New Year’s Eve 2006-2010 (NYC). In 2006, Amber served as a Production Assistant on the Broadway musical, Grey Gardens. Amber spent five years working with Manhattan Theatre Club as a Subscriber Services Representative and two years as a House Manager at Playwrights Horizons, both in New York City. Originally from Maryland, she holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Salisbury University. Amber is a proud member of the Hippodrome Company and the Actors’ Equity Association.

Belle Boothman (Master Electrician) Belle joined the Hippodrome as Master Electrician in September of 2019. Six months later the pandemic would be in full swing, and Belle would become a videographer/editor for the Hippodrome’s virtual productions. Favorite productions from this time include This Wonderful Life and Shakespeare, Thou Art Translated. Before getting into technical theatre Belle earned an AA in Anthropology from Santa Fe College, a BA in Sociology from Florida State University, and studied Chinese Language and Culture at Tianjin Foreign Studies University. After a brief (and expensive) detour to graduate school for Museum Studies, Belle went on to earn an AS in Theatre and Entertainment Technology at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Favorite productions worked as a student include Young Frankenstein as Props Designer, Stalking Ottis Toole: A Southern Gothic as Master Electrician, and Peter and the Wolf as Lighting Designer. After graduating from FSCJ, Belle worked full time as a union stagehand with IATSE local 115 in Jacksonville, FL. Belle is an art and music hobbyist.

Caryl Fantel (Music Director) Caryl is a Carbonell, Silver Palm and Remy Awardwinning Music Director who has performed from Carnegie Hall and Off-Broadway to the acclaimed 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle and regional theatres around the U.S. Also a composer and vocal arranger, Caryl has supervised vocal group performances for the Tony Awards, the South Florida presentation of Hugh Jackman’s World Tour, and other events, as well as accompanied many renowned performers, including Andrea Bocelli, Liz Callaway, Tovah Feldshuh and Beth Malone. She is Producer/Music Director of the South Florida Carbonell Awards, an adjunct university instructor, a vocal and audition coach, workshop presenter, and member of the Broward County Cultural Council. Erin Jester (Costume Designer/Shop Supervisor) is delighted to return to the Hippodrome for its 50th season. Erin is a UF alumna and a former Hippodrome costumes intern (2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons), and in 2020 received her MFA in costume design and technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Previous costume design credits include productions of Cabaret, Much Ado About Nothing and Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. Other credits include costume historical research for North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, historical costume reproduction for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS, and costume coordination for the Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker and the independent film series 12 Westerns in 12 Months, directed by Travis Mills

Elaine Shoaf (Properties Designer) Alma Elaine Shoaf is a painter, illustrator and book artist based in Gainesville, Florida. She graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration, and has created illustrations for Radix Media, the Florida Trail Association, Hachette Books, Before the Door Pictures, Keepers of the Springs, Swamp Witch Pedals, and the Tampa Bay Brewing Company. Her second solo show, Ghost Lines, premiered at 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, FL in 2017, and her drawings and paintings have been exhibited across the country. Additionally, she makes and sells handbound journals and sketchbooks under the moniker Inky Cap Books using a combination of repurposed materials and her original prints and drawings/paintings.

John Gray (Choreographer) John is elated to return to The Hipp for A Gentleman’s Guide… He has previously directed A Christmas Carol at The Hipp as well as stage managed the New Works Festival 2020 and The Effect for the Hipp Unplugged series. He is the General Manager for Broadway Unlocked/ All Together Now, the company that hosted the online Opening Night for The Hipp’s production of Souvenir.  He has spent most of his career in educational theatre working with kids from kindergarten to college age and has former students working in all aspects of theatre from performing to design. Favorite shows include A Christmas Carol (The Hippodrome), An Ideal Husband (Sonnet Repertory Theatre), Merrily We Roll Along (Wichita State), Phantasmagoria (Prospect Theater Company), Broadway Bombs (Joe Allen Players), Grease (Tippecanoe Outdoor Amphitheater and Das Barbecu (Heartists.) In addition to directing, John has choreographed and costumed numerous productions and is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association. Favorite performance credits include Falsettos, Fallen Angel, The Foreigner, Lead Heavy Sky and How To Succeed… Much love to his wonderful and patient partner, Jason.

WHO’S WHO IN A GENTLEMAN’S GUDIE TO LOVE AND MURDER

Robert P. Robins^ (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) Bob is enjoying his 39th season here at the Hippodrome, where he has designed lighting for over 700 Hippodrome productions and events. He has worn many Hipp hats throughout the decades: Lighting Designer, Production Manager, Facility Manger, IT Manager, AEA Stage Manager, TYA Tour Stage Manager, Safety Officer, Intern Recruiter, Light Board Operator, Sound Mixer, Mainstage State Tour Technical Director, and Bartender, just to name a few. Bob also continues to provide lighting designs throughout the country, working with clients that include architects, theatres, dance companies, industrial events, schools, colleges and universities, municipalities, various types of small and large companies, and homeowners. He proudly holds a BFA in Theatre Production from the University of Florida.

Timothy J Dygert^ (Scenic Designer) Tim is a staff member of The Harn Museum of Art, and the owner and operator of Dygert Design LLC, a professional design firm based in Gainesville Florida, specializing in entertainment, residential, and commercial design and consulting. He has been involved in theatre and event production for the entirety of his adult life, having been instrumental in the creation of more than 500 live theatre, dance, music, and corporate events. Tim has worked with internationally recognized and award-winning designers, playwrights, performers, and entertainment professionals. Tim also serves as the Harn Museum of Art’s Exhibit Installation Coordinator and Preparator. He is a professional art handler, assists in the design and installation of exhibitions, and fabricates mounts and custom art installations. His design work can be seen at dygertdesign.com.

Susan Schuld (Accent/Dialect and Text Coach) has been acting and vocal coaching nationally for over 25 years and is an Associate Professor of Voice and Speech here at the School of Theatre and Dance. M.F.A in Acting from Rutgers University, Designated Linklater Teacher, Certified Teacher of KnightThompson Speechwork, and a National Michael Chekhov Association Teacher.

Warren Goodwin (Technical Director) Warren joined the Hippodrome in 2004 as a carpenter in the scene shop, and assumed the role of Master Carpenter in 2006. In addition to helping build over a hundred of Hippodrome sets, Warren served as co-scenic designer on The Christians and The Wolves. He is thrilled to be currently serving as Technical Director. In his free time, Warren enjoys painting, and is an accomplished local artist. You can often find his work on display next door at Maude’s Cafe.
