DIRECTOR’S NOTE Whenever I’ve directed a play by Shakespeare, I’m always asked if I am going to “update it.” I’ve always found this question odd because during the time that Shakespeare’s plays were written, the theatres didn’t care about historical accuracy. If a play was set in another time, actors would simply wear contemporary clothes that matched the status of the character. Therefore, based on the production practices of the time, all of Shakespeare’s plays were presented in some version of what we would now call “modern dress.” This understanding is the first step in realizing that his plays should live in the now, not centuries away. In AS YOU LIKE IT, a Duke has been usurped by his brother whose erratic and cruel behavior reminds us that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. For this reason, I have set the play circa late 1960s/early 70s, the heyday of dictators such as Nicolae Ceausescu and Francisco Franco, men who seized power and never let it go. It was also a time you could watch professional wrestling on television, a favorite sport of the Duke. So what is the play about? As You Like It has elements of what used to be called a “pastoral play.” In this genre, corrupt court life is rejected in favor of living in an idealized natural world populated with happy shepherds. Shakespeare clearly knows the form but he can’t maintain it with a straight face -- he knows there is no world without conflict, especially in matters of the heart. For me, AS YOU LIKE IT is primarily a play about love and friendship and how they interconnect. Rosalind and Orlando seem to experience love at first sight in the world of the court but once they run into the forest to escape the Duke’s oppression, will it survive? Rosalind dresses as a man to ward off danger but when she runs into Orlando in the woods, she has the rare opportunity to befriend him in disguise and test the bounds of their love. Of course, those two aren’t the only romantic pairing in the play but as the title reminds us, it’s up to you to decide what you think of them. And finally -- why all the talk about deer horns? Back in Shakespeare’s time, “wearing the horns” meant you were a cuckold (a man whose wife is unfaithful). As it turns out, this horn metaphor still exists in many countries and cultures. To borrow a line from another Shakespeare play, “The course of true love never did run smooth.” I hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoyed creating it. Charlie Mitchell (Director As You Like It)
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE The Hippodrome State Theatre is proud to continue our co-production collaborations with The University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance with this production of AS YOU LIKE IT. The School of Theatre and Dance and The Hippodrome formalized our agreement seven years ago and that collaboration has brought to our stage The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Peter and the Starcatcher, Avenue Q, 1984, and many other fantastic productions. But what is a co-production? And why do it here at the Hipp? The Hippodrome is committed to building relationships with emerging artists as we create first class regional theater here in North Central Florida. And UF SOTD is a wonderful partner, training the next generation of actors, designers, and directors. The gaps between what theatres can do, and what they would like to do grow every year, but this collaboration provides opportunities for emerging artists, and with support from UF SOTD, allows us to create larger and more spectacular productions, to explore storytelling from a very different angle. These young artists gain the experience of working with a professional theater company as well as actors from all over the United States. And the Hippodrome is able to explore stories we couldn’t serve without the support of our partner. And let’s be honest, having all that wonderful excitement and energy from the students makes the co-pro one of our favorite productions every season. PLAY SYNOPSIS Orlando, the youngest son of Sir Roland de Boys, has been denied his inheritance and education by his jealous younger brother, Oliver. When Oliver learns that Orlando has challenged Charles the wrestler to a match, he tells Charles to hurt him as much as possible. Duke Frederick has stolen his kingdom from his brother, Duke Senior, who has fled to the forest of Arden with his loyal followers. At the same time, Duke Frederick has allowed Duke Senior’s daughter, Rosalind, to remain due to her friendship with his daughter, Celia. Orlando beats Charles and falls in love with Rosalind. Rosalind shares his feelings and gives him a chain to wear as a token. Duke Frederick, angry at the people’s love of Rosalind, banishes her. Rosalind goes to the forest of Arden with Celia and disguises herself as a man. Touchstone, the court fool, joins them. Rosalind takes the name of Ganymede and Celia becomes Aliena, his sister. Oliver now intends to kill Orlando but his trusty servant, Adam, warns him of Oliver’s plan and the two also escape to the forest. Still in disguise, Rosalind and Celia buy a property and hire a friendly shepherd named Corin to manage it. They also run into a lovesick shepherd named Silvius who is trying to woo a woman named Phoebe, who scorns him. Rosalind chides Phoebe for her cruelty, but Phoebe ends up falling for Ganymede. In the forest, we find Duke Senior and his supporters living off the land. Among them is Jaques who lives to be melancholy. Orlando and Adam, desperate for food, discover them and are welcomed. Ganymede, Aliena, and Touchstone find love poems addressed to Rosalind hung on branches by Orlando. Ganymede meets Orlando and proposes to cure him of his love by pretending to be Rosalind. In another part of the forest, Touchstone woes a country girl named Audrey. Oliver, who has been ordered by Duke Frederick to find his brother, is attacked by a wild animal but saved by Orlando. The two become reconciled. Oliver delivers the news to Ganymede that Orlando has been injured and immediately falls in love with Aliena. Rosalind finally decides to end her disguise and hatches a plan to unite all the lovers. In the end, all couples are married and blessed by Hyman, the god of marriage.
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Charlie Mitchell (Director) Charlie Mitchell is an associate professor at UF’s School of Theatre and Dance. He has worked as an actor for a variety of theatres in New York, Chicago, and Baltimore, including three years as an artistic associate in the award-winning Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. He is currently a Hippodrome company member where he has directed A Doll’s House, Part 2, The Snow Queen, and co-directed Avenue Q. At the Hippodrome, he has performed in Let the Right One In (Halmberg/ Mr. Avila) The Tempest (Gonzalo), Mr. Burns (Sam/ Homer), Peter and the Starcatcher (Alf), Hand to God (Pastor Greg), Hamlet (Polonius), and The Legend of Georgia McBride (Eddie). At UF, he has directed In the Blood, You Can’t Take It With You, The Grapes of Wrath, A Piece of My Heart, Urinetown, Hobson’s Choice, Metamorphoses, Luna Gale, and Eurydice.
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Amber Coleman (Audrey) Amber is very excited to make her debut at The Hippodrome Theatre. She is currently a first year at the University of Florida where she is pursuing her MFA in acting. Amber studied Theatre Performance at University of North Carolina Charlotte, where she received a BA. Her stage credits include Lady in Purple in For Colored Girls (Duke Energy Theatre), Death in Everybody (UNC at Charlotte) and Fabian in Twelfth Night (UNC at Charlotte). Bryan Mercer^ (Adam/Sir Oliver Martext) Bryan returns to the HIPP since playing the Announcer in Miracle on 34th Street, Walter in Lone Star Spirits, the piano in Scrooge in Rouge, the candyman in Let the Right One In, Horatio in Hamlet, Steve in Becky’s New Car, Jane in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol, Mrs. Bumbrake in Peter and the Starcatcher, Gibson in MR. BURNS, a post electric play. He has also musical directed Trailer Park: The Musical, Mr. Burns, The Marvelous Wonderettes, Honkytonk Angels, and many others. He has been known to Atlanta audiences for over thirty-five years as an actor, singer, director, designer, painter, and served as puppeteer, composer, musician, and musical director for 15 years at the internationally acclaimed CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS. WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Christian Carlson (Charles the Wrestler/Silvius) Christian is currently pursuing his MFA in acting at the University of Florida. He graduated from Troy University with an undergraduate degree in theater, and performed in several plays there such as Dollhouse, Eurydice, and Flyin’ West. He has also been in several film projects and commercials. He hopes to one day star in superhero and action films. Interesting fact, his first professional job was as a hand model for Southern Living.
Clint Thornton^ (Jaques) Clint is pleased to return to the Hipp stage, having previously appeared in A Christmas Carol (FEZZIWIG), A Year with Frog and Toad (TOAD), Let the Right One In (HAKAN), and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (ED). Other professional roles include Trestle at Pope Lick Creek (DRAY), Amadeus (SALIERI) Buried Child (BRADLEY), Frankenstein (THE MONSTER / DEATH), Henry V (CHORUS / MONTJOY) and Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (SWEENEY). Also a professional director, his work has appeared at the Hipp in A Year with Frog and Toad and Scrooge in Rouge. He has many Atlanta credits, including Around the World in 80 Days, The 39 Steps, The Tatischeff Cafè, and The Santaland Diaries. In June of 2022, he will direct James Joyce’s Ulysses for Arís Theatre in Atlanta. Clint also serves as the Front of House Manager for the Hippodrome, and he hopes you are having a lovely experience.

Matthew Lindsay*^ (Duke Senior/Duke Frederick) After a long hiatus, Matthew is thrilled to be back on the Hippodrome stage in this production of As You Like It with such a talented cast! He was last seen at the Hipp as various roles in another of Shakespeare’s plays, Hamlet. Matthew holds an MFA in Acting from UF and is currently a professor of theater at Santa Fe College, where he teaches acting, theater history, and improvisation. Seth Greenberg (Jaques de Boys) Seth Greenberg is making his debut on the Hippodrome Theatre stage. Seth Greenberg is a BFA Musical Theatre major at UF and has been wanting to become a jester since he was 8. He would like to especially thank his loving family and his sister, Madeline.
Sophia Paige (Phebe) Sophia is so excited to make her debut at the Hippodrome! She is currently a 2nd year BFA Actor at the University of Florida. You may have previously seen her surprise performance as Vera Similitude in a matinee showing of Dog Act at UF. Working on this show has been an incredible time and she can’t wait to share this story. She would like to thank her friends and family for their unending support, especially her mom, who’s love for Shakespeare taught her to love him, too.
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Steven H. Butler (Corin) Steven is the Founder/Executive and Artistic Director of Actors’ Warehouse in Gainesville, FL, and is also the Executive Director for the Florida Theatre Conference (a non-profit theatre arts education program). As a director over the past 10 years, he has been instrumental in staging such favorites in the Gainesville area as: Single Black Female (Lisa B. Thompson), The Mountaintop (Katori Hall), Satchmo at the Waldorf (Terry Teachout), The Amen Corner (James Baldwin), Ruthless (Joel Paley) and Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Horwitz & Maltby). One of Steven’s biggest honors was representing the United States, at the 2017 Mondial Du Théâtre International Amateur Theatre Festival in Monaco, with the South African production of Tshepang (Lara Foot Newton).
Zöe Wilde (Celia) Zöe Wilde is from Orem, Utah. On a performance scholarship, Zöe graduated from Utah Valley University with a Bachelor’s in Theatre Arts with a Performance Emphasis. Zöe is in her last year of completing her Master’s in Fine Arts at the University of Florida. Zöe’s favorite credits include Mykelle in Once I was a Beehive and Once I was Engaged, Porter in Macbeth, Betty in Betty Blue Eyes, Jessie in Sweat, Natalie in Next to Normal, Erma in Anything Goes, Mary Patrick in Sister Act, and Pimple in She Stoops to Conquer. She would like to thank Charlie and Stephanie for their support and guidance and her UF cohort for being the best “chosen family” a girl could ask for!
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Amber Wilkerson*^ (Stage Manager) Amber is a professional Stage & Event Manager. She has been affiliated with the Hippodrome Theatre since 2003, first as Properties Intern, then as Assistant Stage Manager before moving to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. She returned to the Hipp as the AEA Stage Manager of A Christmas Carol in 2005 & 2006. She has worked professionally for The Metropolitan Opera (NYC), The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, NJ), North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, MA), and Times Square New Year’s Eve 2006-2010 (NYC). In 2006, Amber served as a Production Assistant on the Broadway musical, Grey Gardens. Amber spent five years working with Manhattan Theatre Club as a Subscriber Services Representative and two years as a House Manager at Playwrights Horizons, both in New York City. Originally from Maryland, she holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Salisbury University. Amber is a proud member of the Hippodrome Company and the Actors’ Equity Association. Katie Grayson* (AEA Assistant Stage Manager) Katie is an AEA Stage Manager visiting us from Denver, CO. She started her stage management career with the Hippodrome in 2014. After a few years away in the mountains, she is very excited to come back home to the swamp. Robert P. Robins (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) Bob is enjoying his 35th season at the Hippodrome. During his tenure here at the Hippodrome, Bob has provided lighting designs for over 300 Main Stage productions. Over the course of his time at the Hippodrome, Bob has held many titles such as lighting designer, sound engineer, live audio mixer, stage manager for Hippodrome Mainstage; touring productions and Theatre For Young Audiences tours, pyrotechnician, lightboard operator, and bartender. Today, in addition to lighting designer and production manager, Bob is also the facility manager of the 110 year old building that the Hippodrome calls home. Bob also provides freelance lighting designs around the country when he can. WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Julie Ray (Scenic Designer) Julie Ray is a scenic designer for theatre, film and television, and Associate Professor of Scenic Design at the University of Georgia. For the Aurora Theatre Julie’s had the honor of designing Christmas Canteen annually since 2015. Other Aurora designs include The Bridges of Madison County, Mama Mia, and the premiere of Men with Money. Other notable credits include The Color Purple for Actors Express in Atlanta, The School for Scandal, Stones in His Pockets, and The False Servant for Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre Company, She has held various roles in multiple art departments, including Production Designer, Art Director, and Set Designer. TV and film credits include Netflix’s Mindhunter, The X Files, Babylon 5, Neighbors 2, Abduction, Love & Other Drugs, and 13 Days. Julie holds a BFA from Cal Arts, and a MFA from the University of California, Irvine. www.jraydesign.com Warren Goodwin (Technical Director) Warren joined the Hippodrome in 2004 as a carpenter in the scene shop, and assumed the role of Master Carpenter in 2006. In addition to helping build over a hundred of Hippodrome sets, Warren served as co-scenic designer on The Christians and The Wolves. He is thrilled to be currently serving as Technical Director. In his free time, Warren enjoys painting, and is an accomplished local artist. You can often find his work on display next door at Maude’s Cafe. Bill Boothman (Lead Electrician) Prior to joining the Hipp, Bill worked with the stagehand’s union IATSE local 115 in Jacksonville, FL. Bill prefers neck down work, but to stay employed will occasionally dip their toe into design. “We’ve all had to branch out and learn new skills in this new era we all find ourselves in.”, says Bill. Recent Hippodrome design credits include video designer for Souvenir, This Wonderful Life, and A Show Must Go On. Bill is a synthesizer hobbyist. Amanda Nipper (Sound Designer) Amanda is thrilled to be in her ninth season at the Hippodrome. Other regional credits include Cape Fear Regional Theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and The Parchman Hour: Songs and Stories of the ’61 Freedom Riders as the mix engineer in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Dorset Theatre Festival: Good People, The Whore and Mr. Moore, Boeing Boeing, and Deathtrap. Keep moving forward.
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Erin Jester (Costume Designer/Shop Supervisor) is delighted to return to the Hippodrome for its 49th season. Erin is a UF alumna and a former Hippodrome costumes intern (2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons), and in 2020 received her MFA in costume design and technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Previous costume design credits include productions of Cabaret, Much Ado About Nothing and Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. Other credits include costume historical research for North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, historical costume reproduction for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS, and costume coordination for the Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker and the independent film series 12 Westerns in 12 Months, directed by Travis Mills. Susan Schuld (Accent/Dialect and Text Coach) has been acting and vocal coaching nationally for over 25 years and is an Associate Professor of Voice and Speech here at the School of Theatre and Dance. M.F.A in Acting from Rutgers University, Designated Linklater Teacher, Certified Teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and a National Michael Chekhov Association Teacher. Tim Dygert (Properties Designer) Tim is a staff member of The Harn Museum of Art, and the owner and operator of Dygert Design LLC, a professional design firm based in Gainesville Florida, specializing in entertainment, residential, and commercial design and consulting. He has been involved in theatre and event production for the entirety of his adult life, having been instrumental in the creation of more than 500 live theatre, dance, music, and corporate events. Tim has worked with internationally recognized and award-winning designers, playwrights, performers, and entertainment professionals. Tim also serves as the Harn Museum of Art’s Exhibit Installation Coordinator and Preparator. He is a professional art handler, assists in the design and installation of exhibitions, and fabricates mounts and custom art installations. His design work can be seen at dygertdesign.com.
WHO’S WHO IN AS YOU LIKE IT Tiza Garland (Fight Director & Intimacy Consultant) Professor Garland is a Certified Movement Analyst (CMA) of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). She is a Certified Teacher with the National Michael Chekhov Association and a Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD), a Certified Teacher with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat (BASSC), and a Senior Teacher with Dueling Arts International. Professor Garland is a classically trained actor and has trained with the Dah Theatre in Belgrade, Serbia, in Grotowski-based work, she has studied Meyerhold’s Biomechanics with Gennadi Bogdanov, as well as trained with the United Stuntmen’s Association in Seattle, Washington. Her primary teaching responsibilities at UF include teaching the Movement for the Actor courses and Stage Combat.
