Through the tireless dedication of our artists, staff, and supporters, we have continued to bring powerful narratives to life on our stage, igniting conversations and fostering connections that are as profound as they are enlightening. These past few years have been a testament to our resilience and unwavering dedication to the arts. We faced unprecedented challenges and reimagined the way we connect with our audience. Amidst the uncertainty, our commitment to our mission never wavered. We found new ways to innovate, adapt, and explore the boundless possibilities of live performance, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of our patrons and artists.

Message from the As I look back on our last season, I can’t help but reflect on the origins of this theater, the passion and commitment of the founders. I reflect not only on the six creatives that launched a living, breathing legacy, but of the first patrons to make their way to that 7-11 store; the couple navigating the ginormous pothole in the parking lot and deciding not only to come back, but to guide, shape and support that fledgling organization and to also become the Hippodrome’s very first board members. I think of all the patrons waiting for the rain to stop on the tin roof at the old warehouse on 441 so the show could go on; and the community that voted for the Hippodrome to be given the old post office building to create a new home for art that would bring the downtown community back to life over the next 40 years.

Artistic Director Cities the size of Gainesville aren’t home to professional regional theaters. It’s just not a common experience. Cities our size aren’t large enough to sustain the funds and maintain the patron attendance that non-profit professional theaters require to produce high-quality productions and employ professional artists. And yet, here we are, 50 years later, doing the impossible. This community, our community, has proven time and time again that the arts matter; that they are worth investing time and money in; and that, at the end of the day, cultural arts is what ties our community together. We are beyond grateful to be a part of this very vibrant and special community. We truly would not be here without every single one of you.

The Hippodrome’s From its inception in 1972 the Hippodrome Theatre has brought stories to the stage that explore and celebrate the human condition. The Hippodrome has pushed the limits of storytelling, creating memorable productions and our 50th season was no exception. Our theme Beyond Limits continued our tradition of storytelling outside the norm and producing stories that challenge our assumptions. We challenged the community to talk about the demonization of books and knowledge in our season opener and co-production with UF SOTD, Fahrenheit 451, then asked them to find a way to connect across the political divide in Running Mates. We celebrated the holidays with our classic A Christmas Carol, adapted by a local playwright, and laughed the night away with those two amazing musician actors in the musical, Murder For Two. We pushed the boundaries of storytelling with the Pulitzer prize winning The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, set in a literal wrestling ring on stage, and produced a clash of cultures comedy, Native Gardens, to make us all laugh and wince at ourselves.

50th Mainstage Season We inspired the entire community to reach for the stars in Silent Sky as we collaborated with women in science from across the county, and ended our season with the largest musical produced on the Hippodrome Stage in many years, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.

The Hippodrome also continued to explore new ways of bringing storytelling and the community together, pushing the limits through its New Works Festival celebrating Floridian voices and stories, and the Hipp Unplugged series that fosters new playwrights, new directors, and helps us grow the talent right here in our community.

Education & Community The Hippodrome has been providing educational programming since its founding. Education and the engagement of young audiences is at the heart of the mission of the Hippodrome. This year, the Hippodrome continued the tradition with classes, camps ,and collaborations with local organizations and events. This year’s Spring Break camp was titled We Found Things. This series, inspired by a scavenger hunt, offered participants an exploration of Downtown Gainesville.The students devised scenes, poems and songs about the articles found during their scavenger hunt.

Engagement Summer Spectacular hosted 150 campers. This year’s plays were The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, The Jungle Book, and Hain’t Blues. Our youngest campers worked on character development and poetry. This culminated in the creation of a play inspired by Dr Seuss’ story, The Lorax. All of the plays were performed by the campers on the Hippodrome’s Main Stage. The Education Department also developed active community partnerships with Alachua Academy , the Center for Peacebuilding, The Center for Humanities in the Public Sphere and Peaceful Paths.

Hipp Cinema This year, the Hippodrome Cinema invited cinema patrons to not only view great films but to participate in them as well. Our Cocktails & Classics series showed several original Universal Monster films and we began a series exploring the cinema of science fiction themed: Beyond Space, Beyond Time. Our partnerships this year were eclectic by design. Through our partnership with the American Institute of Architects, we encouraged awareness of the built environment and design. Our collaboration with composer David DiDonato brought him back to perform his score to Nosferatu live in our cinema. We were privileged to show Yelling Fire in an Empty Theater, an independent film that was created by a group of artists formerly from Gainesville. There is something captivating about familiar faces on the big screen.

We showed several films that created big waves in the industry for their novelty and reception. As The Whale was being praised critically, we screened it in tandem with the director’s, Darren Aronofsky, cult classic PI to give greater depth to his body of work. The instant horror phenom Skinamarink, challenged our less adventurous patrons, but also demonstrated that even a film with a $15,000 microbudget can still manage to amaze audiences. Our regular programming continues to expand to include a significant number of international films. This year, we had contributions from West African, French, and South Korean cinema. One of our best performing films was Broker, a South Korean production starring, Parasite favorite, Song Kang-ho. We ended our season early to begin undergoing a much-needed revitalization, generously funded by the Wild Spaces & Public Places sales tax. Stay tuned for more details. Art Gallery The Hippodrome Theatre Art Gallery is dedicated to showcasing the work of local and regional artists and fostering a vibrant arts community in Gainesville. With a commitment to promoting creativity and cultural expression, the gallery provides a platform for artists to share their unique perspectives and engage with the community. This past year we showcased the works of Celino Dimitroff, Wes Lindberg, Alma Elaine Shoal, and other local artists including Hippodrome staff.

50th Birthday Celebration The Hippodrome’s 50th Birthday Celebration was held on April 15, 2023 and commemorated the Hippodrome's Past, Present, and Future. Each area of the Hippodrome was dedicated to showcasing the theater's history, engaging with the Hippodrome’s current programming, or imagining the future of the Hippodrome. Over 1,000 people attended our community celebration. Lot’s of things have changed in the past 50 years, but the Hippodrome’s commitment to professional theatre has never waivered!

Special Events In 2022-23, the Hippodrome had many special events in our Cinema and Basement! Events included ongoing programs and several one time special events. Many of these events were done in partnership with other organizations. Basement Sessions showcased new, up and coming, and local artists allowing them to experiment with new music, sound, and art. This event served as a platform for the artists to grow their audiences. A few of the artists showcased this past year included Kingkooling, Short Stack, Krystin Blaire, and many more.

Unguarded The Movie - The event culminated with a panel discussion with the Filmmaker Simonetta D’Ltalia and members of the Department of Corrections. The film and discussion was done in collaboration with the Department of Corrections and UF Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere. Magical Approach - Experimental film and live music performance in collaboration with Pulp Arts. Acrocats - Feline Extravaganza featuring real life felines in collaboration with Rock Cats Rescue. Lost Boys of Sudan - Panel discussion and screening with Sudanese students impacted by the civil war and current crisis in Sudan in collaboration with the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding

Strategic Plan The 2023-2028 Five year Strategic Plan grew out of the collected staff, board and community input around questions about where the Hippodrome wants to be in five years and how we get there. We identified six pillars foundational to the Hippodrome longevity and sustainability; Mission Clarity, Marketing and Public Relations, Financial Sustainability, Community Engagement, Infrastructure and Process, and Board of Directors. As a result of this inquiry a revised mission and vision for the Hippodrome were created.
