Ruby inspires change

o here we are with another edition of the Sunny Coast Times.

We hope you like it!

Production of this month’s issue has been hampered a little by an injury to my knee, so I’m writing this with half my leg bandaged up and elevated after surgery. Thankfully all went well and I should be much more mobile again soon.

It was timely, therefore, that this month I got to meet Ross Copeman. After years of living with pain, he finally decided to have his knees and hip replaced. Now Ross has started competitive cricket and tennis again, 25 years since he last played.

“Instead of living to exist I’m living to enjoy myself,” he told me.

“I have taken the attitude that I’ve got 25 years to catch up on and I’m going for it.”

You can read Ross’ story on pages 38 and 39.

Calling all young writers T

he Sunny Coast Times is partnering with its sister paper the Hinterland Times to present the HT/SCT Young Writer of the Year Award for 2021.

The annual award has run for the past two years in the Hinterland Times, showcasing the writing talents of the region’s young scribes.

More than $1000 of prizes are on offer. The winner and two runners-up will claim a Montville Coffee one-on-one barista training session and book vouchers from The Little Book Nook, Palmwoods.

All three stories will be published in both papers, and the Sunny Coast Times will feature the winner and two runners-up inside the paper.

The judging panel will be made up of writers and editors from the HT and SCT. Entries are sent to the writers with no names or ages attached, to avoid any bias, and they choose their favourites in order of preference. They are then returned to the editors who will also list their favourites and ascertain the most popular stories.

Interestingly, in previous years, most of the judges had a different number one favourite.

We make the final decision based on the number of votes for each chosen piece. (No correspondence will be entered into regarding the votes.)

There will be one winner, two runners-up and five highly commended.

The age range is 10 to 17 years. Due to the differing ages, the overriding criteria is how

imaginative, descriptive and evocative a story is – essentially, how a piece made us feel, rather than the grammar and punctuation.

The subject is ‘2020’. You can write about your experiences, or about someone you know, or make something up completely with characters from your imagination, from any point in time looking at the past year.

The word limit is 600 words, but we may accept pieces running slightly over this.

Entries close on July 31.

The six chosen writers will be announced in the September editions of the Hinterland Times and Sunny Coast Times.

We believe awards can be helpful to galvanise and encourage people to step outside of their comfort zone and to put their work ‘out there’ – but they don’t label your worth as a writer if you don’t ‘win’. Creativity is personal and subjective, and another set of judges may choose completely different stories. We really look forward to reading your ideas.

Angie driven to succeed

A

ngie Mansey did not know that a decision made to help her family would see her inspiring an entire community, starting a charity, building a multi-award-winning business and writing a book about her life story that would go all over the world. How could she?

She was just trying to find a way for her family to survive.

“We struggled financially when my son was born with a severe medical condition,” Angie says. “Being in and out of hospital all that time, we really struggled maintaining our jobs and keeping on top of our bills.”

In 2016 Angie and husband Luke sold the family home and put everything they had into purchasing Kuluin Mufflers, a small business on Fishermans Rd. “We started the business out of necessity,” she says.

“I needed to be able to take time off work, when needed, to support my son through surgery and hospital visits (he is just about to have his 29th operation), so we went into business for ourselves.

“I was a dental nurse and my husband was a diesel mechanic. I had actually married my best friend, we met at Caloundra High School on the first day of grade eight.”

Their whole world changed when their son Corbin was born.

“Corbin was born with VACTERL association and biliary atresia,” she says. “In short, he had 28 surgeries, spent almost his first year of life on life support, has been resuscitated from flat-lining six times, has holes in his heart, epilepsy,

three kidneys, multiple throat surgeries, esophageal atresia, chronic lung disease from long-term life support, is fed via stomach tube, and has a rare liver disease that saw him placed on the transplant list at a year old – and that is just some of his conditions.

“This young boy is the reason Kuluin Mufflers exists in the first place.

Having an income and being able to work around caring for her son was vital for Angie.

“Whenever I introduce myself to anybody, I am first and foremost a mother of four,” she says. “I have four beautiful sons and I love being a mum.”

Known for her charity involvement and philanthropy, Angie also founded successful charity Driven By KM to help other families on the Coast.

“Driven By KM provides financial support and care packages to Sunshine Coast children diagnosed with chronic life-threatening illnesses,” she says. “(It gives) immediate respite from financial hardship that has been placed on the family due to the chronic life-threatening health of a child.

“This charity was really important to me. We didn’t want other families to go through what we had been through, having to worry about making the mortgage repayments that week or having to go to work so the siblings could go to a school camp or something like that. Having experienced that first-hand, this was something that we felt was really

important to try and help other families with.

“It is the last thing a person with a sick child should be thinking about, where to get the money to put food on the table, so I’m hoping that our charity will at least take some of the pressure off. Make it a bit of a lighter load to carry.”

Angie says getting to know the car community on the Coast has been one of the biggest joys along this journey, citing them as some of the most caring and giving people you would ever meet.

“There are so many incredible car clubs on the Sunshine Coast, and a lot of the

car clubs do big charity events and help the community in quiet ways,” she says. “There is a lot of work behind the scenes for the community.

“Every year at KM we give back and hold big fundraisers.

Last year we took over the Air Museum at Caloundra and filled it with food vans and cars, a gigantic drive-in theatre and put musician Juzzie Smith under the big fighter jets. We raised just over $12,000 for cancer research charity Love Your Sister.”

Angie has been recognised for her business achievements, passion and charity work on the Coast. She is a 2021 Australian of the Year Local Hero Queensland finalist, won the Telstra 2019 Queensland Small Business Women’s Award, the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards for Excellence in Social Responsibility and the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Young Business Woman of the Year.

“To have a business that worked around the kids, and these cars, was something pretty cool,” she says. “We never expected it to be as successful as it was – we hoped it would be, but never expected it. We never expected it to be so much fun either, it’s been wonderful!

“My biggest passion is giving back.”

Angie has now published How I Made Lemonade, a book about her incredible life story. It is a raw and apologetically authentic tale about being a businesswoman, devoted mother and role model with an undefeatable spirit.

Ruby’s bright idea for school

A

Buderim Mountain State School student is proving you’re never too young to make a difference – and in doing so earn the praise of the principal.

Year 2 student Ruby Russell wanted to brighten up the bathrooms at the school so, with the help of her mum Janelle, she prepared a formal proposal to have them painted. She then took her plan to principal Neil Jenkins, who successfully asked for the school’s P&C to fund her proposal.

Now Ruby and the school are seeking an artist who can assist her fulfil her vision by volunteering to help paint the bathrooms.

Ruby wanted to change the school’s junior bathrooms so they were more like the senior students’ amenities, which have been brightly painted with positive messages. She used the school holidays to form a plan to have the bathrooms upgraded. Her proposal included the problem, impact, solutions, budget and fundraising, as well as the positive benefits for students that aligned with school values. She says it was hard work “but I liked doing it”.

“My mum explained how to write a business proposal – she gave me the headings and I had answer them all,” Ruby says. “I did the best I could so Mr Jenkins could understand my problem with some ways to fix it.”

Janelle adds: “She spent about four hours in drafting her responses, endless hours in drawing different designs then researching positive quotes and affirmations, before piecing it all together in her hand-written proposal.”

Ruby then asked her mum to arrange a meeting with Mr Jenkins so she could present her proposal, with Janelle saying Ruby was “equally excited as she was nervous”.

“For a seven-year-old, it’s quite a big experience to sit in the principal’s office and present an idea,” she says. “I think she did really well and was able to link her responses back to the school’s PERKS well-being program, which was amazing.”

Mr Jenkins also paid tribute to Ruby’s courage and vision.

“Ruby was very confident and enthusiastic, and was keen to be proactive and do whatever she could to improve something that she saw as an issue,” he says.

Following the presentation, Mr Jenkins took Ruby’s proposal to the school’s P&C. “We have a very hard-working P&C who oversee three very successful business units,” he says. “This has allowed the P&C to generate an excellent income that can fund improvements to our school … The P&C agreed to fund this project as a result of Ruby’s presentation.

“All of our toilets were refurbished a couple of years ago and in that time, the senior students’ toilets were brightened up with positive messages that relate to our PERKS Project.

This is a program that our staff have created to improve our students’ social emotional learning. It stands for ‘positivity, empathy, resilience, kindness and self-awareness’. We will now go ahead and brighten up the junior toilets with similar PERKS Project messages.”

It is hoped the upgrades will be completed in the next school holidays.

So how did Ruby feel when she heard her proposal had been successful?

“Excited, a bit nervous, happy and proud,” she says.

“It feels like a really kind gift I get to share with my school friends. I want the art to have positive messages so when you are in the bathrooms you can read kind messages to yourself, because when you read them enough you believe them.”

Janelle adds: “We were jumping for joy. There may have been a few happy tears too.

“I am so proud of her. We try to inspire solutions focused thinking at home. When you have a problem, you also have a choice: complain or change. Ruby is a change-maker.”

Mr Jenkins is also full of praise for Ruby and her commitment to change.

“Ruby did a terrific job with her initial written presentation and followed this up with a very confident presentation with me,” he says. “Ruby is a terrific example of our younger generations and their confidence, respect and willingness to be proactive.”

Janelle is hoping someone might volunteer their time to help complete the job.

“We have had a few responses from Facebook but nothing concrete yet,” she says. “We would absolutely love to hear from more local artists who would like to help bring this project to life.”

She also thanked Mr Jenkins and the P&C for their support.

“We are really grateful to Mr Jenkins for taking the time to support and inspire, and to the wonderful BMSS P&C,” she says.

“We hope this will inspire all kids, that no matter how big or small an idea change is possible and anyone can achieve it.”

Ruby also has a message for those who want to make a difference.

“You can be the change,” she says.

“If you can find the problem you can make the solution. Be brave, make a good plan and share it with people that can help you.”

No regrets in career conversion

risten New describes walking away from an established career in the travel industry for something completely new as “taking a leap of faith”.

“I had been in the travel industry since I was 18,” says Kristen, who has just celebrated her 50th birthday. “Changing career was something that I guess I had contemplated for a few years but it was the fear of the unknown.

“I have to admit it’s really hard to get your mindset to a completely different career.”

And it’s probably something she wouldn’t have done without a little push from her husband, Paul, who owns NY2K Jewellery at Cotton Tree.

“He’s taking credit for it,” she says with a laugh.

Years earlier, Paul had bid on a real estate course at a charity auction.

“He won the bid, so I’d been sitting on this course for years,” Kristen explains.

“When all the COVID story came out, I thought maybe now is the time to change career, so I went and did the course, and I was lucky enough to get employment.

“Loren Wimhurst (from Next Property Group) is a customer of ours through the shop so I’ve known her for a long time.

“At the charity auction, we’d had too much to drink, and she said to Paul, ‘If you win it, I’ll give Kristen a job’.

“He knew I loved the travel industry but it was dying, mainly because of the internet.

“I would put all this time into preparing people’s itineraries and then they’d go and book online so he could see I was doing a lot of work for little money and he could see my frustration.

“He is proud of me because he could see it was a really big change to make, changing from one industry to another.”

Kristen says making the change was a leap of faith, but having a supportive network of friends, family and colleagues around helped her through those early days.

“I have had the help of a lot of people, which has been wonderful,” she says.

And Loren remained true to her word.

“I called Loren and said this is what I’ve done, can I have a job?” Kristen says. “She said straight away, ‘Definitely’. In that respect I was lucky.”

Kristen admits to being “out of my comfort zone” on her first day in a new career.

“On the first day, I was so scared,” she says. “We had an office meeting where I had to introduce myself and I felt so inferior.

“I’d gone from knowing the travel industry like the back of my hand to something that I didn’t know at all.”

Kristen and Paul have lived on the Sunshine Coast for 17 years and, during that time, established a strong network that formed an instant client base.

“When I first started in real estate, I contacted a few people I knew through the shop and some have become clients,” she says.

“That helped me step into the industry because I knew so many people already – which I didn’t think I did, actually.”

Kristen says that while both industries rely on sales experience, they are very different.

“Real estate is more emotive,” she says. “People have an attachment to houses and it’s just different.

“With travel you’re selling fun and excitement and a dream for someone.

“With real estate, it is exciting for some, but for others there’s a lot of emotion involved and it’s about being there for them. You have to be a little bit of a mentor and like a counsellor. You’ve got to have an ear because there are so many stories out there and you have to listen and be very empathetic to people because it is such a stressful process for some.

“I called a lady for her three-month anniversary to see if she was OK because I knew she was a bit apprehensive

about downsizing. She was really surprised I called. That’s just part of what we do; we don’t just sell you something and forget about you.

“She is still struggling with it so I said I would pop in and see her.”

At the end of the day, does Kristen have any regrets about changing careers?

“If the travel industry hadn’t changed and hadn’t evolved in a negative way, then I might but, no, I have no regrets,” she says.

“Plus, I have the opportunity to travel now and not be in work mode.”

Kristen and Paul have just returned from a trip to the Northern Territory where they celebrated her 50th birthday.

“It was a bucket-list item – something I had been wanting to do my whole travel days but we always had the opportunity to go overseas instead,” she says. “For my 50th we were meant to go to Africa, so this was probably the closest I could get.

“It was an amazing holiday and probably my next port of call is Broome and the Kimberleys.”

A highlight was meeting crocodile man Matt Wright.

“We stayed at his property and did his overnight tour and met him at breakfast the next morning,” Kristen says.

“He had been on the turps the night before and was a bit seedy so that just manifests his whole character.”

Unable to ignore her inner travel agent, Kristen suggests that now is the time to discover the NT. “It’s amazing and it’s right in our backyard. It’s really untouched and not that busy. It’s a good time to visit,” she says.

M

any hours of driving back and forth along the Bruce Highway on weekends certainly keeps dancer Victoria Ryan on her toes.

But “suffering for her art” – after starting a new job as an exercise physiologist in North Lakes and Caboolture at the beginning of the year – is all worth it for the former Sunshine Coast resident, whose parents still live in Kawana Waters.

She has time to mentally prepare for rehearsals in the lead-up to Neo Vida Dance Company’s latest production, Somnium, and reflect on the efforts of her young students at Amethyst Dance Studios in Moffat Beach, where she has been teaching for six years.

In fact, Victoria would be the first to admit her life of dance is the stuff of dreams.

“Dance is a great creative outlet for me and has been for

most of my life,” the 22-year-old says.

“Throughout school, university and now full-time work, it has always been the best form of stress release, expression and exercise for me.

“I also love seeing my friends every week with the same interest as me, which is another factor that makes it so enjoyable.”

Victoria was only a toddler when she was introduced to the joys of dance in the United Kingdom.

As she progressed through learning different styles, she found herself focusing on ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz.

When her family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2006, while she was still in primary school, Victoria continued her dancing instruction.

“Amethyst (Dance Studios) was such a great foundation for me and where I continued all of my training,” says Victoria, whose “biggest dance inspiration” is Queensland Ballet artistic director Li Cunxin, of Mao's Last Dancer fame.

“It is such a lovely dance school with wonderful leadership from Catherine Lim.

“This is where I met Patricia Jar as she started teaching me ballet in my later years of school at Amethyst. From there, she offered me a position with Neo Vida Dance Company.”

Twenty years since attempting her first pirouettes on stage, her enthusiasm has never wavered.

In between, Victoria has participated in a handful of dance eisteddfods across Queensland and numerous Amethyst dance concerts, as well as Neo Vida productions.

Somnium – Reflections of Dreams is taking up many of her waking hours before hitting the stage at The J Theatre in Noosa on July 8, 9 and 29 at 6.30pm.

“I have been with Neo Vida since the start of 2017 and have been fortunate enough to be a part of all the major shows Patricia has produced,” Victoria says.

“With the company rehearsals being based in Maroochydore and Caloundra, it has made it quite the effort to get back and forth but I'm so glad that I did. It has been well worth all the hours of driving.

“Rehearsals have consistently been three hours on Friday nights and four hours on a Sunday afternoon. Now that the show is getting closer and closer, we have started rehearsing on Saturday afternoons as well.

“I'm super-excited for the public to see what we've been working on for so long. I think it will be a great show that everyone can enjoy and relate to, not just the dance fanatics.”

Like many creative artists around the globe, Neo Vida’s dancers were forced into a performance hiatus last year due to COVID-19.

Patricia says rehearsals had to be postponed indefinitely. But the easing of restrictions has brought renewed vigour.

“As soon as we were able to get back in the studios, we began exploring ideas for our comeback,” she says.

“We hosted a successful audition and built a strong

group of dancers for our 2021 season. My goal as a director and dancer, myself, is to reignite the flame of dance performance on the Sunshine Coast and inspire audiences through our unique storytelling choreography.”

Patricia, a school teacher, founded Neo Vida, which translates as “living your life in the now”, in 2006 because she saw a gap for performance artists on the Coast.

She also wanted to inspire ideas, encourage students to learn through creativity and help them explore different career avenues.

Dance works are developed with an emphasis on modern dance movements, influenced by European and Australian art forms.

Victoria has been there from the start, performing with Neo Vida in its first-ever production, Control, which she says “will always be a highlight for me – but my favourite production so far would definitely have to be our new one coming up in July”.

“Performing with Neo Vida is such a great creative outlet for me and I am so lucky that we are able to perform Patricia's work to an audience,” she says.

“I'm really looking forward to dancing in Somnium and getting back on stage after such a long break.

“Our show is centred around four main themes that commonly occur in dreams and nightmares, showing the effects that our daily lives can have on our sleep.

“I play a few different roles in the show and also worked collaboratively to choreograph some of the pieces with our director Patricia and my fellow company members.”

Somnium, which comes from the Latin word “to dream”, explores the idea that dreams can reveal insight into hidden desires, hopes, anxieties and emotions.

performance art, the production shows the audience how our dreams and nightmares can teach us something and help us instil a change in our actions, thoughts or behaviours.

“There are so many different aspects of dreams and reality that we were able to explore through dance, and being able to portray this in the production is very gratifying,” Victoria says.

“The dream narrative was something that we were all really excited about – seeing how Patricia wanted to explore it – and made the whole process so fun.”

Healing energy provides spark to carry on

E

ighteen months ago, reiki master Faye Wenke was given just three to six months to live after being diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer. But you wouldn’t know it to look at her.

Faye looks the epitome of good health and is still conducting reiki workshops on the Sunshine Coast, as well as in Sydney and on the Gold Coast, refusing to let her diagnosis slow her down.

Instead, she’s just fitting in her usual activities around chemotherapy treatments and hospital visits.

“I could have gone down the all-natural path but decided to use a mix of traditional and western medicine,” says Faye, who spent many years in Noosa.

“So I am having chemo and giving myself reiki every day.

"I feel great. I figure I have more yet to do, that’s why I’m still here.”

She’s convinced that her years of practising reiki have helped her manage the symptoms and she has no intention of giving

up – quite the opposite – as she wants to share her knowledge and give the gift of reiki to as many people as possible while she’s able.

At one weekend workshop in May, Faye had four new students as well as four returning students who had come along for a “refresher course”.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese hands-on healing technique that uses energy flow and Faye teaches a form called Jin Kei Do. “It is a form of reiki healing based on the teachings of Sensei Mikao Usui that was further developed by the ancient meditation and healing system called Buddho, discovered by the Japanese monk the Venerable Seiji Takamori after a long search and study in India, Tibet and Nepal,” Faye says. “Then it was further refined by Dr Ranga Premaratna.

“The words Jin Kei Do mean integrating compassion and wisdom into your daily life using reiki and meditation.”

Faye says she has been on a long journey of self-development and growth since 1976 to build self-confidence and

To act with wisdom instead of reacting to situations has been life-changing – I feel calmer and more confident

self-awareness, and became a reiki master in 1990.

“There’s a quote I like from Mark Twain, 'I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened’,” she says. “That is so true. It’s so easy to worry about the things that might go wrong, instead of just worrying about the things that have gone wrong.

“Reiki gave me a wonderful way to understand and release what was holding me back and to open me to more of my full potential.

calmer and more confident.”

Faye sees this battle with cancer as just another step in her journey. It’s not easy, but she’s not letting it get her down.

When she was first told she had just months to live, her first response was acceptance.

“I had more scans and the doctor said to me, ‘You realise now you only have three to six months left to live?’ and I said, ‘Alright’.

“I asked my daughter Natasha, who was with me, how she felt about that. She thought it was rough that he put it like that.

“But, that’s what the scans show, that’s what is on the screen.

“I didn’t ask him any more questions because, I thought, that’s how it is.

“It is what it is.”

Faye said her oncologist had been amazed by her progress throughout the treatment.

“My oncologist, I really like him, he said to me not long ago, ‘I’m learning a lot from you’.

“I’m not like his usual patients.”

Faye had asked him if it was OK to keep teaching and was told that she could “if she felt up to it”.

“He’s really good. I try to schedule my workshops when I’m not having chemo but it didn’t work for this one – I only had the pump taken off on Friday,”

she tells her reiki class on the Sunday.

“I’m in there usually two to three hours. The drip goes in and the pump goes on, which I have on for two days, and then I have to go back and have it taken

off.

“I try to do the workshops in between but because I had unexpected surgery, it just didn’t work out that way.”

She gives reiki to herself every day and has friends come over to give her reiki too, often three at a time to multiply the healing effect.

As Faye flicks through photos from years ago, she laments the loss of her long locks.

For a moment there’s a shimmer of sadness in her eyes.

“My hair became so thin and I had to have it cut,” she says.

“Everyone says it looks lovely but I look in the mirror and I don’t even recognise myself.

"I’ve always had long hair … and I’ve lost so much weight.

“But I’m still here.”

Dream festival for beer-lovers E

ight of the Coast’s best breweries will showcase their creations at the Hinterland Craft Beer Festival at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel on Saturday, June 26.

The event was put on hiatus in 2020 but this year it returns with brewers from Heads of Noosa, Copperhead Brewery, Boiling Pot Brewing Co, Moffat Beach Brewery, Sunshine Brewery, Brouhaha Brewery, Your Mates Brewing and Eumundi Brewery in attendance.

“After what’s been an unquestionably challenging last year, we’re excited to be back again for what will be our third Hinterland Craft Beer Festival,” Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery manager Paul Thomas says.

“This much-anticipated event gives beer-lovers a great opportunity to sample and discover new beers.

"With more than 40 craft beers on offer, there’ll be something for everyone – ales, lagers, sours, porters, stouts, IPAs and other specialty beers.

“And if you know a thing or two about brewing and are passionate about your craft

beer, it is a great chance to meet and share stories with the fabulous team of brewers who’ll be there on the day.”

he brain behind beloved Nambour burger joint Downtown Burgers is branching out with a new kombucha venture.

Aptly titled NamBucha and with the proud tagline ‘Crafted on Currie Street’, Cam Scott says “it’s the best thing out of Nambour since K-Rudd”.

“We are just joking – there are so many great things that have come out of Nambour and we want to be a part of that movement,” he says.

Cam says it took about a year to find the right recipe for kombucha production on a commercial scale.

“We have developed a more delicatetasting, non-harsh kombucha than what is traditionally on the market.” he says.

“NamBucha’s probiotic green tea is wildly fermented and you won’t be believe how great it tastes.

“As we say, ditch the bin juice ’bucha and liberate your buds.”

NamBucha’s base is made with jasmine green tea, has no added preservatives or artificial sweeteners and is unpasteurised.

Cam says the result is a drink “carefully curated for gut-loving effervescence”.

He says the drink pays tribute to the town it was created in.

“We love Nambour and have always thought it needed its own drink,” he says.

FOOD, DRINK AND DINE SULTANA AND APRICOT SLICE Serves: 16 Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 20-30 minutes Fruit and veg: ½ serve per portion Ingredients 125g olive oil spread 2 tablespoons golden syrup 1 cup desiccated coconut ¼ cup caster sugar 1 cup self-raising flour ½ cup rolled oats 150g sultanas 100g dried apricots 2 eggs, lightly beaten 3 tablespoons sunflower seeds Method • Preheat oven to 180C and line a 20cm x 20cm tray with baking paper.

• Add olive oil spread and golden syrup to a small saucepan over low heat and stir until just melted. Set aside.

• Combine coconut, sugar, flour, oats, sultanas and apricots in a large mixing bowl.

• Add the golden syrup mixture and the eggs to the bowl and stir until well combined.

• Pour the mixture into the slice tray and bake in the middle of the oven for 20-30 minutes, or until golden.

• Cool the slice then cut into squares.

The slice can be stored for 3-4 days in an airtight container.

What’s great about it?

This slice is quick and easy to make, and is a great snack on the go. The dried fruits and rolled oats are good sources of dietary fibre and help to keep you fuller for longer.

Fear of the dark THE BEER FROM ROUND HERE

T

he common reaction when I present a dark beer to someone is a look of fear, sometimes even horror and disgust, as they tell me “sorry I don’t like dark beers”.

Now I don’t take offence to this reaction, but see it as more of an opportunity to challenge preconceived ideas about a huge range of beer styles that all get lumped into the dark beer category.

I recently attended an event called All in Good Taste, which gathered a range of drinks for tastings and discussions with industry professionals and those interested in expanding their beer knowledge. This month’s event was focused on malt, the forgotten ingredient, and the backbone of pretty much every beer style.

Before hops became the cool kid on the block with their citrus, fruit, pine and resinous flavour profiles, malt was the workhorse behind the scenes providing the essential sugars (which the yeast converts to alcohol) but also providing flavour, colour and body for beer. Most beer styles use barley, rye or wheat in their recipe, and malting is the process of germinating the grain and kilning it dry, which makes fermentable sugars available to the brewer (and the yeast) to convert to alcohol. Malt can also provide non-fermentable sugars

that provide a residual sweetness you find in many darker styles of beer.

Dark doesn’t necessarily mean a heavy beer either (and yes, people still say there is a steak in every pint of Guinness).

Darker-coloured beers can have a light body but still impart those roasted and sweeter flavours that are prevalent in brown ales, Belgian styles, stouts and porters.

Sweetness is a key element in beer as it balances the bitterness of the hops and can provide flavours like toffee, caramel, biscuit, chocolate and coffee across many darker styles of beers.

During the colder months you will see more of these styles of beer appear on the taps at your local brewery, often as a small batch or seasonal release. I recommend getting out there and trying local offerings like Bat Migration from Boiling Pot, the Bock from Heads of Noosa, or Cereal Killer from Moffat Beach Brewing Co. Want to go full dark? Then check out the barrel-aged options from 10 Toes and Your Mates, or the crossover black IPA style from Blackflag Brewing called Liquid Metal.

So, my message to you is don’t fear the dark. Don’t let your eyes make the decision before giving your tastebuds the opportunity to have a crack because I guarantee you there is a dark flavour sensation just waiting for to experience.

or most of the past 100 years, the Palmwoods Memorial Hall has held a reputation as an excellent dance venue.

During the 1920s and early 1930s the Palmwoods Show Ball was the social event of the year. The organising committee provided its patrons with a different program each year.

In 1932 Mr. F. Webber and Miss Doreen Buchanan, Australian dance champions since 1930, demonstrated the quick step, diagonal waltz, slow foxtrot, Viennese waltz, tango and rumba.

Brisbane bands were hired at a cost of 25 pounds. In 1929 music was provided by Mr. J. Grants of the Brisbane Jazz Band, while in 1930 and 1932 a “program of attractions

previously only held in the metropolis” was provided by Mr Billo Smith’s Trocadero Orchestra of six players. The players arrived by train and after suitable “refreshment” were at the hall by 8.15 to start playing. The admission charge for a double ticket was seven shillings and six pence.

Nothing was spared by the ball patrons when it came to formal attire for the night. The ladies wore new evening dresses, fur evening coats with a matching purse and gloves, and on arrival received a book for the gents to book their dances. The gentlemen wore dark suits, white pleated starched shirts, bow ties, white gloves and black patent shoes.

The hall was decorated for the occasion, as in 1929 with “coloured streamers, bangalow and cabbage tree palms” and “massed greenery and poinsettias” on the stage.

Special train arrangements were provided for patrons from Eudlo, Mooloolah, Landsborough and stations south; in 1928 it left Palmwoods at 2am.

Balls were held during the winter months by different Palmwoods organisations. In 1937 the season started with the St Patrick’s Ball in March followed by the Church of England in May, Country Women in June, the Show Ball in July (until the show ceased) and the Roman Catholic in August.

During the years of the Second World War very few balls and other entertainments were organised. The Church of England held one of the first balls post-war in 1946, and the following year a gala Silver Jubilee Ball commemorating 25 years since the hall was built was organised by the Memorial Hall Committee.

An amusing story came out about tea-making for supper. Tea leaves were usually tied up in a cloth and placed in the pot but on one occasion it was discovered later that a sock had been used instead when the husbands were left in charge of straining the tea.

aloundra’s Gateway Care has launched its Random Acts of Community Kindness initiative that allows people to purchase vouchers that families can use towards much-needed groceries.

Gateway director Amanda Peterson says the RACK vouchers are a way to show kindness while providing practical support to families and people on the Sunshine Coast that need help.

“Gateway have over 10,000 families on its database and last year alone we provided support to 3500 families – an increase of 50 families each week against previous year averages,” she said. “We know that the cost of food and living can at times exceed what many people can afford and many families are crying out for help.

Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt has welcomed the initiative and hopes Coast residents will show their generosity buying vouchers to support families in need.

“There’s a real need for a service like Gateway and RACK is a great way to practically provide support to families who are struggling to put food on the table,” he said. “We know throughout the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused additional stress and hardship for many people, but the Sunshine Coast community is strong and when there’s a need for support locals chip in. And RACK is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”

“With the average daily spend at Gateway being less than this amount, this means that for many people their daily groceries are covered, and for some families this may be enough to meet half of their regular weekly grocery bill,” she said.

RACK vouchers are tax deductible and can be purchased at the Gateway Food Centre, by phone or as a donation via the RACK Initiative page on the Gateway website.

Gateway is also gifting RACK vouchers to local charity groups including Kyabra, The Salvation Army, Rotary Club, Caloundra and Baringa community centres, St Vinnies as well as government agencies.

Bloomhill Cancer Care’s annual fundraising campaign, Be There for Bloomhill, has been launched for 2021.

The Buderim-based charity has provided integrated cancer care and support to people of all ages and cancer types for more than 23 years.

Bloomhill chair Michael Wise said he was “thrilled” at the generosity of community groups such as Mooloolaba Bowls Club, which used its annual May Day pairs event to raise $815 for the charity.

In 2019, Murph Manthey, Rachel Jarvis and Ian Rowe set out to raise awareness about the rise in veteran suicides associated with severe PTSD. Murph’s son still struggles with PTSD after returning from Afghanistan.

The trio’s ultimate goal was for Murph and Rachel to summit Mt Kilimanjaro, and they held fundraisers and raised awareness. But due to COVID cancelling travel plans, they decided to donate all the money raised, totalling $11,922.20, to Mates4Mates, which helps support veterans.

More than 350 Sunshine Coast wine imbibers have raised $170,000 for a local charity that supports our community’s most vulnerable.

The Travis Schultz Winemakers Master Class was held at the Maroochy RSL to help SunnyKids. It was the ninth year for the event, which has now raised $610,000 for SunnyKids.

“This event enables SunnyKids to continue to offer important services such as our early intervention program for families, critical to providing kids with an opportunity to reach their full potential,” SunnyKids general manager Kathleen Hope said.

Since celebrating its 35th anniversary in March, the Probus Club of Caloundra 86 has had two enjoyable day trips.

Members visited the Caboolture Historical Village, with guides showing the group around the historical buildings.

They gave an understanding of the era, and a train ride was included in the tour.

Then it was off to St Helena Island by ferry from Manly.

The group learnt of the island’s beginnings as a quarantine station and then a state penal establishment. Lunch followed under the trees.

“Our student numbers continue to increase year on year and we expect to continue to grow well past our 800 students in the next few years,” Mr Quinn said. “The school hall is an important facility for our school as it hosts sporting events, cultural events, graduations and assemblies as well as concerts and a school musical every second year. This year’s musical Shine Your Own Way has been written by the students of Bli Bli State School and will be performed by over 150 students on September 9-10.

tireless Prototype to help farmers Nicola’s efforts rewarded I G magine a world without drought, and where access to clean, safe and sustainable water is no longer a problem.

Two students at St Andrew’s Anglican College are one step closer to making this a reality, winning the gen[in] student entrepreneurial challenge and $4000 prizemoney.

Year 10 students Kia and Ethan have developed Gen Aquarius, a product designed around the philosophy of a clean, safe and sustainable future for how we generate water.

The device, which they have developed through extensive research and community consultation, uses a nanofibre to collect water from the atmosphere around it, alleviating the need for a pre-existing water source.

“This problem needs to be addressed here and now, not just for the farmers and their livestock, but for our planet’s sake,” Kia said. “We considered how we could create a commodity that would benefit people living in areas where clean drinking water is scarce.

“We don’t do enough for them in these harsh times.

However, when we work together, we can make real change happen. So join us on our journey to make a difference – we are passionate for our national community and this is our message.”

Kia and Ethan joined the gen[in] challenge earlier this year and were shortlisted as a finalist from more than 250 entries. They then spent two days workshopping with business mentors, fine tuning their idea and gathering information and feedback from industry professionals.

“We had been feeling very confident with regards to nailing our concept and delivering it effectively to the judges,” Kia said.

“We took advice of our business mentors on board and being flexible with change and open to suggestions, practised a lot for our presentation and did loads of

research to make sure that the product was unique and valuable.”

The next steps for the dynamic duo were to create an MVP (minimal viable product) and enter the testing phase with real farmers.

“We will use Kia’s family garage to manufacture our product in-house in the beginning stages,” Ethan said.

“This is where we will begin our journey to establish Gen Aquarius.

“We will continue to make improvements until it meets customer satisfaction and are focused towards making a fully functional product to begin selling in the near future. “ Kia and Ethan plan to enter more entrepreneurial competitions to further increase their innovation portfolio.

ood Shepherd Lutheran College Year 12 student Nicola Lafferty has been awarded the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs award.

The goal of the award is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising the candidate’s commitment to the volunteer sector, leadership achievements and dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Nicola has an extensive track record of achievements. She has regularly walked in ANZAC Day parades; volunteered with the Cooroy Rotary Club; participated in science competitions, debating groups and musical events; and been involved in numerous sporting activities. Her academic awards are extensive and significant and she is currently Donella school house captain.

A colourful character’s tragic end NATURE

ast month I waxed lyrically about the visit to my property of a bird that I regarded as rather special: the bush stone-curlew. This month I sadly have reason to reflect on another of my avian visitors that, over the years, has always raised my interest levels whenever I have known it was around – which was never that often.

On some occasions I would only become aware that it was paying me a visit by hearing the quite distinctive ‘walkto-work’ call. While this call may be heard at any time of the day, I have more usually heard the call from the forest edges as dusk was approaching. At other times, I would glimpse the colourful bird during my quiet walk through the small bit of rainforest that edges the creek, my attention drawn to it by a busy scratching and scattering of fallen leaves as it rummages on the forest floor for insects and other delicacies that form its diet. If you can imagine a bird crashing about in hob-nailed boots, you will get the picture. Particularly favoured are snails for which, like the European song thrush, our visitor will have a favourite stone or log on which to smash the shell to reach the invertebrate flesh inside.

This celebrity visitor is the noisy pitta (Pitta versicolour), which can be found from the tip of Cape York down a strip along the eastern coast of Australia, largely to the east of the Great Dividing Range, to as far south as the NSW-Victoria border. They are also found in the Torres Strait Islands and southern New Guinea. While they are described as moderately common, they are rather shy and I can count the known visits to my small piece of the Sunshine Coast hinterland in single figures over almost two decades.

This really colourful bird, only 20cm from tip of beak to the end of its stubby tail, is absolutely unmistakable. A chestnut brown cap covers its black head. Back and wings are a rich, almost emerald, green but with an iridescent turquoise streak along the leading edge and a similar coloured band where back meets the short tail. A pale buff chest, black belly patch and bright crimson vent complete the kaleidoscopic plumage.

A few weeks ago, when sitting inside my home, an almighty crash echoed through the house. I immediately knew it was a bird hitting one of the windows with some force. Normally these strikes are caused by pigeons that either have a death wish or are pretty hopeless at distinguishing what is glass and what is a safe fly zone.

Imagine my great dismay when, on this occasion, I discovered the lifeless form of a noisy pitta, for which an unusual venture so close to the house, and quite a distance from the usual rainforest environment, had proved to be the bird’s unfortunate undoing. I have been lucky enough, during my many years of bird photography, to capture a few decent images that fully display the true magnificence of this delightful bird and, somehow, convey the very essence of life it enjoys.

What a dreadful shame that this wonderful bird has had such a tragic end. It has now been respectfully laid to rest in the precise spot beneath the jasmine bush from which it is believed it took off for its final fateful flight. The unfortunate deceased noisy pitta

eal Country! is this year’s NAIDOC Week theme and the name of the annual NAIDOC exhibition at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre during June and July.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who are connected to or living on Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi lands will share their understanding of connection to country and the need to Heal Country! through painting, weaving, sculpture, video, poetry and performance.

“Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre constantly strives to create a place with a sense of safety, belonging and inclusion within the community and allows for First Nations voices to be heard with their regular NAIDOC exhibitions,” BFAC coordinator Alicia Sharples says.

“This year we have the generous support of Accor hotel group to make this exhibition possible and we are excited to host an incredible array of artists with Elders such as Aunty Hope O’Chin, Aunty Beverly Hand and Uncle Paul Calcott, along with established artists like Jandamarra Cadd, James Hurley, Bridgette Chilli Davis and new emerging artists such Cholena Drew Hughes and Ivy Minniecon.

“We are incredibly lucky to again have artworks by Uncle Paul Calcott’s NuunaRon group who are First Peoples Disability Network artists. Their work will be seen for the first time in this exhibition at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre before their unveiling in the UN headquarters in New York.”

Local Indigenous artist and exhibition co-coordinator Melissa Stannard says the Heal Country! message is an important one.

“Our connection to country is inherent to our identity,” she says. “When we walk on country, we come alive as our ancestors watch over us and guide us, they are embodied in our waterways, trees, rocks, plants and animals. It is part of the way we practice, learn, rekindle and redevelop our creative skills and to listen deeper to ourselves and the land.

orld-famous flautist and classical music trailblazer Jane Rutter is the star attraction in a one-off performance for Noosa Alive! at Tewantin State School on July 17.

Jane (pictured) takes the stage alongside the Noosa Orchestra and Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir, conducted by Antoni Bonetti and Fay Baker respectively, in a two-hour concert spectacular for flute, choir and orchestra.

The program is certain to appeal to all musical tastes, from serious Baroque music to Celtic with a light-hearted nod to ABBA. “We wanted to create a program to celebrate an end to COVID lockdown,” Jane says. “As a young teenager I looked up to Antoni Bonetti. Together we were founding members of the now celebrated Sydney Youth Orchestra, so it's a thrill to be working with Toni and his baton after all this time.”

Jane divides her time between Paris and Sydney but says performing in Noosa is a kind of “homecoming” after living with her young family in Queensland a couple of decades ago.

“I’ve been to Noosa many times, and had a kind of honeymoon there when first married,” she says.

Jane has played alongside music giants such as Pavarotti, Carreras, Michael Crawford, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, Teddy Tahu-Rhodes, Peter Cousens, Tina Arena and more.

The BATS Theatre Company is proud to present Eurydice, the classic Greek myth of Orpheus reimagined through the eyes of its heroine.

Eurydice is in love with Orpheus. With her father’s words in her hand, Eurydice crashes down a flight of stairs and wakes in the underworld, her memory wiped. Orpheus knows his love is now in Hades, and makes a plan to travel into the land of the dead. But will he be able to revive his beloved wife? And will Eurydice even want to go home?

Ed Kuepper, of The Saints, Laughing Clowns and The Aints fame, will team up with Dirty Three drummer Jim White for a sensational night of music at the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi on Saturday, June 19.

Together they will tackle 45 years’ worth of Kuepper catalogue with a twist that only these two game-changers could apply.

Heavy burden of light rail Two men have influenced my attitude to the proposed light rail along the Nicklin Way. The first was my son, newly arrived from California, where he has purchased a smart car with some self-drive capabilities. He was scornful at the proposal of a retro light rail up the Nicklin Way because smart cars will be the future, with their electronic sensors that are many times quicker than human responses in traffic and can drive almost nose-to-tail already.

Many tightly packed vehicles could soon snake in great safety along the Nicklin Way, many more than we can do today in our traditional vehicles. These lines of cars would be similar to giant trains, yet safer than today’s traffic along that road. The incredible expense of putting light rail for a mere 13km will be seen as what it is: a total waste of time and money.

And pause for a second and consider the traffic chaos while the light rail is being developed.

Which brings me to the second man to shape my opposition to the light rail concept. He was an engineer on the Gold Coast light rail project for some years and with whom I had some good conversations. He was wanting to return to his home in England but was frustrated how much longer the project was taking than originally estimated. Of course, this made the light rail Gold Coast way over budget.

Similarly, light rail along the Nicklin Way is likely to take years longer than proposed and be well over budget. Imagine trying to drive along the Nicklin Way

while all this construction is taking place for an extended period.

You can escape all this disturbance and cost by submitting your vote against the proposed light rail before June 22. You need to do so as an individual because your letter will count as one submission, while a petition even with thousands of signatures also counts as only one submission.

Transport choices The push for “light” rail from Caloundra to Maroochydore is disturbing. To start with, there is nothing light about “light” rail, which is a euphemism for trams. This form of transport is heavy on the taxpayer, heavy on land use, heavy on accident risks and heavy on ego boost for Mayor Jamieson. Once built, the cry will go up for more high-rise housing along the line and bingo, Gold Coast here we come.

On the other hand, we have new suburbs like Aura with innumerable houses on tiny blocks spread over vast areas that are difficult to service with a rigid public transport system. They need frequent mini buses to feed to a larger, more central system.

One system, very efficient in terms of cost, land use, capacity and flexibility, are sky trains. European and American cities have had them for decades. Bangkok introduced them and changed the city and its traffic woes in a short time.

Tiananmen shame Let us never forget that June marks another anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen (“Gate of Heavenly Peace”) Square Massacre, in which hundreds of innocent university students were murdered and crushed under Chinese tanks for defending the ideal of a free and democratic China.

Our western world seems to continue to ignore and whitewash China’s brutal repression of its citizens under its one-party communist rule for the sake of trade and profit.

With the huge image of Mao Zedong still looming over the entrance of the Forbidden City in Beijing, it is a stark reminder that we are being purposely denied the truth of China’s state-controlled regime.

nyone who knows me knows I love creating vision boards. Because it’s very easy in our day-to-day life to forget about our goals and dreams, a vision board helps keep them all in front of our eyes. Aligning ourselves and keeping our focus on with them continually keeps us on track. Creating a vision board is often the first step to achieving those goals and dreams as it helps keep them front and centre in our life.

There are some suggestions here you can follow to support your alignment with your vision board that will help you maintain momentum to your vision board fulfillment.

And remember, vision boards can be created any time of the year, not just when a new year rolls around.

So once you’ve decided when to begin, invest in a vision board, make one, or use the back of a door and then spend time finding images that resemble what you see in your heart to put on your board. Then take a pen and paper or digitally write down all of your heart’s desires. Next, take the top 10 things you want to achieve, such as write a book, the places you want to visit, financial goals, a business idea, home decor, style ideas, fitness goals, social plans, relationships goals, family and so on.

go with your goals and place them on your board. A top 10 helps keep you focused, and always include some long-term goals too.

Another idea is to use a theme word. For example, this could be “authentic”, so put this on top and place everything else underneath. Now put it somewhere you’ll see it every day because there’s great power in creative visualisation.

The most important part to your vision board creation is to “let go and trust”. You can still take action towards your goals and dreams when necessary and you’re able, but never hold on so tight to your vision that you obstruct it. Instead embrace your images, goals and dreams knowing in your heart they come to you easily and effortlessly, and will be in their perfect time.

Next spend some precious time being grateful; express your thankfulness for them and have faith they are coming to you. Vision boards are a delight as they clarify and enhance the imaginings that reside within us. Saturate your soul with your vision board and let the images permeate your inner being. Begin letting your dreams live in your heart before they arrive in your life. Vision boards allow you to express and believe in the beauty of your inner genius, grace and greatness through the persuasion of images.

ueensland is back in the sights of property investors, with buyers near and far recognising the myriad benefits associated with purchasing rental properties in the Sunshine State. In fact, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics lending indicators, the value of new loan commitments to Queensland investors is the highest in four years.

In March 2021, $1.36 billion in property investment loans were recorded – an increase of 66 per cent compared to March last year, according to the ABS. In fact, the volume of investor activity in Queensland has not been this high since investment lending restrictions came into effect in March 2017.

While those finance challenges have since been wound back, until relatively recently it had remained more difficult than necessary for many investors to purchase a property in an affordable location such as Queensland.

However, record low interest rates as well as the betterthan-expected economic rebound has motivated more investors back into local markets over recent months.

Sales agents from across the state report strengthening investor activity from local residents as well as from buyers from intra- and inter-state. Some of the many reasons why more investors are purchasing in Queensland are due to the more affordable buy-in prices compared to southern states, but also because of the healthy rental yields that can be achieved.

Consider that in Sydney the gross rental yield is just 2.4 per cent for houses but in Brisbane it’s 4 per cent, and higher again still in regional Queensland at 4.9 per cent.

Likewise, when it comes to units, our affordability is far greater than many other capital cities, including even Canberra and Hobart. In Melbourne, the gross rental yield

for units is 3.5 per cent but in Brisbane it’s 5.1 per cent while in regional Queensland it’s 5.4 per cent.

A rental yield is generally the difference between the overall costs of a property and the rental income that it returns. In Queensland, weekly rents have been increasing strongly over the past year. This is due to the ongoing undersupply of rental properties, coupled with an increase in the number of people moving here from interstate and the reduction in the volume of people leaving for other states.

According to the REIQ’s latest Queensland Market Monitor, the vast majority of major locations around the state experienced robust rental price growth over the past year due to these factors. Regional areas saw rents increase sharply with vacancy rates falling to record lows in some areas. The vacancy rates on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are just 0.6 per cent and 0.5 per cent respectively, as an example. These percentages represent critically under-supplied rental markets, which is unlikely to change significantly for some time.

The lack of available of rental properties has resulted in rents soaring in these locations. The median weekly rent for a two-bedroom unit on the Sunshine Coast increased 7.9 per cent to $410 between December last year and the year prior. And the median weekly rent for a three-bedroom house grew by 6.5 per cent to $490 over the same period.

While the increase in the number of investors active in markets across the state will add some such-needed rental property supply, there’s no question that the fundamentals of investing long-term in the Sunshine State remains sound. With a rising population courtesy of interstate migrants, affordable property prices as well as healthy yields and future capital growth prospects, it really does pay to invest in Queensland.

Storm strengthens links to the Coast

T

he Melbourne Storm has confirmed the extension of its partnership with the Sunshine Coast Falcons as its NRL feeder club until the end of the 2024 season.

The club will also establish the Tornados Academy to provide a new pathway for talented rugby league players into the Storm system.

It has also committed to return to the Coast for the next three years for training, preparation or promotional opportunities.

Storm CEO Justin Rodski said the initiatives would provide greater opportunities for local rugby league players to play NRL, and showed a long-term commitment by the club to its members, fans and commercial partners in the region.

“The Sunshine Coast has become a second home for us in the last few years,” Mr Rodski said. “We always feel very welcome here and we have some valuable partnerships in place with the community and commercial sector.”

Storm general manager football Frank Ponissi said the development of players in the region had been important to the club’s recent successes.

“The Falcons have been the perfect fit for our players who aren’t playing first grade, giving them the chance to develop their craft against some quality opposition in the Intrust Super Cup with quality coaching,” he said.

“To have our partnership with the Falcons confirmed until the end of 2024 means we can plan with certainty, knowing our young, talented players have a pathway to playing first grade in addition to playing with our other feeder club, Brisbane Tigers.

“The Storm have been together with the Sunshine Coast Falcons since the 2015 season and during this time a number of Falcons players such as Nicho Hynes, Tui Kamikamica, Ryley Jacks and Chris Lewis have been recruited directly from the Falcons team to the Storm.

“There is also a host of young players recruited to Storm such as Harry Grant, Ryan Papenhuyzen, Justin Olam, Jahrome Hughes and Brandon Smith who have been allocated to the Falcons in the Intrust Super Cup before embarking on successful NRL careers.”

The Tornados Squad will be overseen by former Storm premiership player and Queensland State of Origin representative Tim Glasby, who is now Storm pathways manager.

A

return to competitive cricket has been a long time coming for Ross Copeman.

The 69-year-old, who has had both knees and one hip replaced, has recently returned to the sport after 25 years, playing for the Sunshine Coast in the Queensland Veterans Cricket competition.

Ross says he gave up the game he has played “since I could hold a cricket bat” all those years ago because of his injuries.

“I couldn’t run, I couldn’t do anything, my knees just hurt,” he says. “They hurt enough as it was after work, the last thing I wanted to do was play anything. I was living in pain and it affected everything I did, from my sport to my work to my relationships.”

But it wasn’t until Dec ember 2019 that he had his left knee replaced, followed by his right knee in August last year.

His hip was also replaced in March 2019.

“Eventually I relented and went and had the operations done,” he says. “I’m cursing myself I didn’t have them done 10 years ago.

“I’m a rebuilt man – they’ll have no trouble finding me with a metal detector!”

a week, and walks and runs three other days. He says his yoga lessons with Belle Stevenson at Bikram Yoga Sunshine Coast in Caloundra have been “integral” to his rehab since starting earlier this year.

“Bikram yoga is simply and effectively helping Ross regain his mobility, not only through his new knees but his whole body,” Belle says.

“I see the transformation occur with every class he takes.

“He really deserves recognition for what he is doing. I hope he inspires people out there to get off their bums and stop thinking that they are too old, too tired, too broken to just do something."

For the uninitiated, this is how Ross describes Bikram yoga: “They sit you in a room at 40 degrees, you sweat like a pig without even doing anything … Basically you do yoga exercises, nearly all stretching.

“A lot of people thoroughly enjoy it – I didn’t at first, but I don’t mind it now … It’s done wonders for my joints, especially my knees. I can squat now where I couldn’t before – even before the operation I couldn’t squat.

“Belle’s very good too, she instructs you and puts you through your paces.”

Steer clear of shipping channels, boaties told

aritime enforcement agencies are cracking down on recreational boaters who anchor in shipping lanes.

Coast Guard Caloundra’s Commander Roger Pearce says boaties must take a safety-first approach when fishing in the bay.

By anchoring or fishing in or near shipping channels, you are not only breaking the law but also putting yourself into the path of big ships.

Large ships do not have brakes and can't steer around small boats. They cannot

alter course easily and their draft confines them to designated channels. It can take 500m to turn and they create 2m waves as they pass.

On the water, it can be difficult to estimate the speed at which big ships travel. It may not look like it from a distance but big ships can travel at speeds up to 20 knots.

Also, with large tankers that can be up to 274m long and 48m wide, the pilot is not able to see for many hundreds of metres ahead.

"If you are going out fishing, steer clear of big ships and do not anchor in shipping channels or fairways,” Roger says. “In particular, you must not anchor, drift or fish in the shipping channel off Caloundra.”

eterans cricket on the Coast has boomed in popularity in recent years.

Sunshine Coast veterans cricket regional co-ordinator Gary Madsen says there are eight local teams that play in the Queensland Veterans Competition, which covers from Wide Bay to Toowoomba to the Gold Coast. Teams generally play once a fortnight, home then away, starting in early April with finals by the end of August.

The Sunshine Coast had a team in the inaugural competition in 2013, starting with just six players. That number is now up over 100, with more teams expected next year.

“Veterans cricket is one of the fastestgrowing cricket groups of the lot,” says Gary, 76, who had both knees replaced 15 years ago.

He is also expecting a women’s veterans competition to begin next year, with about 40 women believed to be interested on the Coast.

Taking up yoga and returning to cricket is just another chapter in Ross’ storied life. Originally from Moree in north-west NSW, he has a strong connection to the land and owned an abattoir at Oakey before an unfortunate bankruptcy. He was also heavily involved in politics and is a former member of the central executive of the National Party in NSW. He has sons who live in Brisbane and Perth, and has called Landsborough home for the past 18 months.

He now runs a business called Practical Anything doing all kinds of handyman work. But he stresses that work is no longer his priority.

“I used to fit everything around my work,” he says. “Now basically I’ve changed my priorities – if I have a job I work it around my health."

“There’s some bloody good cricketers there,” he says.

“Some of these blokes, they’re not as vigorous as they used to be but they’re cunning. They float the ball and you think ‘right, I’m going to hit this’, then it just drops on you and you’re stuck in no-man’s land.”

Like Ross, Gary also encourages people who’ve suffered setbacks with their bodies to remain as active as possible.

“Some have got this fear of activity, and yet if you go to sports doctors and get your knees done, they’re telling you to get out and enjoy life, and that’s my general instruction to most guys,” he says.

The Sunshine Coast is set to host the national over-60s championship in September.

Ross’ cricket commitments now involve training during the week at Maroochydore Cricket Club and games generally every second weekend. The all-rounder says it’s been challenging returning to the game after 25 years out.

“I had so much trouble getting my rhythm and came to the realisation what a difficult, intricate game cricket is,” he says.

Ross – who credits his surgeon Dr Gerard Kilian at Noosa Hospital for much of his new-found freedom – is now urging other people who have had suffered injuries to take back control of their lives and enjoy sporting pursuits again.

“The philosophy of what I’m doing is to get my mind back into the notion of enjoying myself,” he says.

“Instead of living to exist I’m living to enjoy myself. I have taken the attitude that I’ve got 25 years to catch up on and I’m going for it – if anyone wants to come with me they can.

“I think that’s half the battle for people who’ve had knee replacements and hip replacements is that the doctor says ‘no, you can’t do that, you’re going to injure yourself’, so they don’t do it … Don’t take it from one person – if you want to use it as an excuse not to do anything that’s fine, but if you love your sport then question the instructions you’re getting regarding their lifestyle after they’ve had surgery.

“It’s not the end of the world if you’ve had your knees replaced.”

Learn to stay safe around water

any Australians enjoy aquatic activities but also care for family members of different ages. The Coast has many great beaches, backyard pools, dams and other water environments, but do we know how to respond to an emergency?

The Grey Medallion is back again for 2021. The free Royal Life Saving Society two-day course teaches skills that could one day save the life of family members, friends or even you.

The course covers how to act in emergency situations on land or around the water; CPR and defibrillator use; basic first aid; and water safety skills. Dry rescue skills show people how to help in an aquatic emergency without necessarily getting into the water.

“The Grey Medallion is a not swimming course – you don’t have to swim, or able to swim, or even be fit to do it,” trainer Patricia Barry says. “This course is a must if you look after children, as we also include a section on water

familiarisation. It aims to teach people how to be emergency aware and what they can do to help in an emergency.”

Ithaca Caloundra City Life Saving Club has run the course annually for 11 years.

This year there will be two different free two-day courses at BreakFree Grand Pacific Resort in Caloundra: July 31 and August 1, and August 28 and 29. Sessions run from 9am to 4pm each day.

“Every year that we have run the course places fill very quickly (so) people do need to pre-enrol,” Patricia says. “We’d encourage anyone over 50 to take part.”

Wallabies legend to share his wisdom

ormer Wallabies captain and World Rugby Hall of Fame inductee John Eales will be the next special guest for the In Conversation series at Venue 114.

Off the back of the sold-out event with special guest Layne Beachley in March, Eales will share his messages on leadership, teamwork and culture at the July 16 event.

Internationally renowned poet Rupert McCall will MC the event, while also sharing some of his greatest pieces of work.

Eales (pictured) debuted for the Wallabies in 1991 and captained the side from 1996 until the end of his Test career in 2001. He remains the highest point-scoring forward in the history of rugby union.

“How could I have known where this game would take me when, as a seven year old, I ran onto the field for the first time in Brisbane,” Eales said. “Anyone who has embraced rugby has been rewarded by the game many times over.”

Swimmers ready to make splash for charity

S

everal hundred hardy souls are expected to brave the ocean waters for the fourth Rotary Solstice Swim on June 27.

Organised by the Alexandra Headland Rotary Club and hosted by the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, it includes 1km, 3km and 5km events. The winners of each event will share in more than $1000 of prizes.

The funds raised from the swim will be used to help establish a headquarters at the Thrive hub in Maroochydore for SalTy Souls Legacy, an organisation that helps disengaged and vulnerable youths heal through the power of the ocean.

Alex Rotary secretary John Malloy says the event – which is hoped to attract 300 entrants – was started “to have a bit of fun or to keep fit in the middle of winter”.

“Although it’s a charity swim, we do keep times of swimmers so they can check out their personal bests, and we put the results on Facebook,” he says.

“We get great community support. The on-water activities are managed by Alex SLSC; the Moolooaba Yacht Club have kindly donated oversize buoys for the day to mark out the course; and our personal trainer Josh from REVL Training will do the all-important warm-up before the event in Buhk Family Park. Local electricity provider LPE has sponsored the trophies."
