t’s now more than 15 months since coronavirus first forced us into lockdown, and as the past month has shown the threat of the pandemic remains.

Several virus cases have been reported in the region, triggering a three-day lockdown earlier in July and forcing us all to continue wearing masks. Who knows what will happen in the weeks to come.

The ongoing restrictions are frustrating for many in the community, but they’ve become a part of our way of life. We now seem more resilient than ever thanks to our ‘been there, done that’ attitude. What is heartening is how people are recognising the importance of helping each other and supporting local businesses.

Our feature story on Kim Edwards underlines how the pandemic has brought out the best in people. Kim ran an English academy for international students on the Coast and was due to take on a new role in Saudi Arabia, but international travel bans scuppered those plans and since then she’s taken on jobs of all kinds, including strawberry picker. You can read Shirley Sinclair’s story on pages 6 and 7.

This month we also profile the local chapter of Friendship Force, a group originally based around international exchanges that has been forced to adopt a local focus because of the pandemic.

Landmark for children’s charity

there is so much power in knowledge. Informing children in an appropriate way instead of keeping them in the dark would give them the understanding they need to better face their challenges ahead.”

Tegan says more corporate sponsors are always welcome.

“It is such a rewarding program to be a part of – small business owners get to donate 10 dolls on behalf of their business and receive their own special branded Bravery Buddy with their logo as a reminder of the impact they have made,” she says.

“We are nothing without our sponsors – every single doll is lovingly sponsored and because of that we have given away 3000 Buddies to little warriors. It's truly a community initiative at its core.”

Tegan is now gearing up for the Superhero Ball, which will be held on the Gold Coast on September 18.

“It’s going be so much fun!” Tegan says. “It's going to be at Movie World – superhero central!

“It'll be a huge-scale, epic party – to give kids and their families a joyous night off from all the difficulty they are facing due to their illness.

“I have always wanted to do something like this since starting Bravery Buddies, but the timing was just perfect now. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month but it will also be my 20th ‘cancerversary’ – 20 years since I was diagnosed with leukemia. I can't think of a better way to celebrate that I am still here, living a beautiful rewarding life, than to have a big party with little superheroes who inspire me every day.”

Coast-based charity that provides companion dolls for children affected by cancer has reached a significant milestone – and is preparing to celebrate with a Superhero Ball.

Since beginning just three years ago, Bravery Buddies has distributed more than 3000 dolls around Australia, as well as overseas.

Founder Tegan Kubler, from Caloundra, is proud of reaching the milestone.

“Each year I set a goal bigger than the one before and so far I have managed to reach all goals set, which is wonderful,” she says. “Of course, it's sad that 3000 dolls are even needed but the reality is that 1000 children in Australia alone are diagnosed with cancer each year, and in addition to all the children who have a loved one with cancer, our job providing Bravery Buddies will never be done.”

Tegan, 32, has battled cancer herself since she was 13 and began Bravery Buddies in 2018 as a way to say “you are not alone” to children impacted by cancer.

“Our special dolls truly make a difference to kids who are battling cancer,” she says. “And it's not just the kids who are impacted – their parents send the most beautiful messages of gratitude upon receiving a Bravery Buddy, because when you are in the midst of cancer treatment, every single moment of joy is precious.

“Just knowing that Bravery Buddies provides so much comfort is truly the most amazing thing.”

Distributing so many dolls around Australia and the world is a big task, but Tegan has a team of helpers supporting her.

“My mum Lyn helps me on a daily basis packing orders and fulfilling requests that come in from little warriors,” she says.

“In addition to that I have amazing supporters who have been working hard behind the scenes to share our cause and bring in donations and sponsorships.

“Most notable is celebrity Christian Hull, who single-handedly got 1500 Bravery Buddies sponsored in the space of a weekend, and Peta from The Road To Loving My Thermo Mixer, who has helped me spread the word and run several successful Thermomix raffles to raise funds.”

Tegan is hoping to expand Bravery Buddies in other ways too.

“We are already distributing overseas – international requests are now being taken for the UK, USA and New Zealand,” she says.

Tyler’s legacy lives on

F

rom unimaginable tragedy has come something incredibly positive.

Charity organisation SalTy Souls Legacy is giving Sunshine Coast youths access to a surf therapy program that is seeing incredible results, and in doing so honouring the memory of Coast surfer Tyler Kennedy, who tragically died while on holiday in Bali in 2017.

The charity was launched in 2018 with what it describes as: “A dream to offer vulnerable children a surfboard of their own, sparked by the memory of our SalTy Soul brother, Tyler.

Tyler Kennedy had a zest for life and a heart that was bigger and deeper than any ocean. He was the saltiest of souls. He lived to be in the water and his legacy will see struggling young people be given the same opportunity.”

Co-founder and Tyler’s sister Tamara Smith says everything about the program ties back to Tyler.

“He learnt to surf on a second-hand board so that’s what we do with kids,” she says. “We teach them to surf and then offer them a second-hand board and they might just end up like him – in the middle of a Tracks magazine.

“It really is a legacy.

“The name, even our shirts, the whole concept of all that, came from Tyler.

“He and I had very similar fashion, we would end up with the same pairs of sunnies. One thing of his I always wanted was his black Sea Shepherd tank, not because I am a fan of skulls but because it represented something. So that’s why we did black muscle tanks.

“When people buy a shirt (from the charity), the profits go into the program and that’s how we funded our first eight

Tamara says the changes she sees in kids involved in the program makes all the work involved worth it.

“Normal therapy has its place, but there are so many kids and teens that really benefit from the physical side of it, and the focus, the belonging,” she says.

“When we first started we thought, we can’t change what happened. It’s about resetting a different future and giving them skills. Whether it’s surfing, swimming, bodyboarding, whatever, it really doesn’t matter, it is just about giving them an outlet.

“We have some kids for two years. It is a more relaxed, natural environment and that helps the kids a lot with anxiety. While they are out there all they are thinking about is them and the wave and the board. It really is that mental health therapy outlet.”

Tamara says one of the biggest hurdles they faced in setting up the charity was wanting the program to be broad.

“It isn’t just for kids with autism or cerebral palsy or for those being bullied,” she says. “It is so broad. We really struggled getting DGR (deductible gift recipient) status because we wouldn’t just stay in one lane. If we had only done, say, kids with autism it would been a lot easier. Kids are being referred from everywhere and it’s such a mix, it just works. It is the best energy when we are all together.”

The positive change in the kids is also felt long after they leave the program.

“Sometimes I get a photo and it could be of a kid that went through our program 18 months ago and they are up at Double Island surfing, saw a SalTy Soul sticker somewhere and they send us a photo,” Tamara says. “That’s when you see they are still surfing and when you go ‘wow’.

“I just got home (from work) and looked at the SalTys ‘Batphone’ and there are all these messages from parents.

You get the feedback that it’s changing the parents’ and carers’ lives as well, because they are seeing their kids change.”

Due to the popularity of the program it now needs a permanent base, with an office and workshop to repair the boards. It will give the charity the ability to grow and take on more kids and reduce the wait list.

“I currently have 30 Mick Fanning brand new softboards in the front yard,” laughs Tamara. “That is how grassroots we are.”

Alexandra Headland Rotary Club has been one of the organisation’s supporters, helping secure a space at the Thrive complex in Maroochydore for the new headquarters.

It also organised the Winter Solstice Swim event on June 27, which attracted more than 200 swimmers and raised $10,000 for SalTy Souls Legacy.

“It was very successful and we had some fantastic swimmers,” Alex Rotary director John Malloy says.

“It was an amazing finish to the 5km swim leg, where budding Olympian Bailey Armstrong just pipped Thomas Raymond by 17 seconds, both completing the 5km in under an hour.

“International netball champ Laura Langman also took part in our 3km swim.”

John was thrilled the club was able to help raise so much money for SalTy Souls.

“It’s a great cause – it has struck a chord with the community,” he says.

Powered by positivity Kim Edwards’ career plans were derailed by the pandemic but she’s never stopped moving forward, writes SHIRLEY SINCLAIR

I had my first Christmas at home in eight years and the time with my family and friends was a gift.”

At first, her new job simply appeared to be delayed a few months.

But as the travel bans and closures began, the lockdowns and restrictions followed, and Kim’s life was turned topsy-turvy.

“After six months, it became clear that I needed to refocus and readjust,” she says. “Then after 12 months, I knew I had to completely change myself and my expectations.

“After 20 years of an intense international career, I now had to became focused about keeping connected, staying positive and being open to new opportunities.

“The past 18 months have been tough, but I’ve learnt that I’m tougher.”

Kim now realises her current equation is the sum of all her life experiences that have been added together to make her strong and resilient.

She is able to find solutions to situations and dilemmas. She is willing to take on new roles and duties to be active, keep a positive outlook, contribute to her community and stay employed in some way.

It’s been a wild ride but one she can still be grateful for experiencing.

“From being a school director to working as a cleaner in a retirement home reminded me of the importance of caring for our most vulnerable,” she says.

“Leading our local triathlon club has taught me that being mentally tough is just as important as being physically fit. Working at polling booths during elections enabled me to keep voters safe by handing out masks and hand sanitiser,

he’s the first to admit her career has been quarantined

by COVID-19.

But after a tough 18 months, Kim Edwards is breaking out and unmasking her 21st century self. She is forging wider connections and gaining new skill sets as her next work phase evolves.

And since the pandemic hit, she’s learnt much more about resilience (and strawberries!) than she probably ever imagined.

Many long-time Sunshine Coast residents will remember Kim as the pioneer and co-CEO of Sea English Academy International from 2002 to 2012.

The award-winning company was based in Maroochydore and conducted training in 27 locations in 16 countries, providing employment for hundreds of staff around the world.

The company was sold in 2012, when Kim’s own world opened up to new possibilities.

She packed up her essentials and moved her life to Saudi Arabia, where she spent the next seven years as the dean of one of the first women's vocational colleges and director of an international school.

“In January 2020, I was about to start my new role as the Middle East regional director for an American international school in Saudi Arabia. It was my dream job,” Kim says.

“Unfortunately, as the pandemic swept across the world, the school opening could not proceed and I found myself caught up in a complete career crisis and stuck in Australia.

“Initially, it was a great relief to be home safe on the

and ensured their voices were heard in government.

“Project managing the relocation of 25 vulnerable mental health patients and settling them into their new home taught me the value of belonging and that everyone has the right to feel safe. Assisting a friend set up her e-training program – that helps businesses become more environmentally responsible – reignited my love of research and sustainability.

“Becoming a board member for a not-for-profit disability service has introduced me to a whole new network of talented and remarkably resilient people. Picking strawberries on cold winter mornings has given me a fresh appreciation for our farmers.

“Serving at a local cafe in the hinterland has shown me

how important a cup of tea and scones is when shared with old friends.

Volunteering at a Visitor Information Centre has enabled me introduce travellers to the beauty of the Glass House Mountains.

“Holding my first photography exhibition gave me the opportunity to donate towards a children’s charity.

Joining and training with local State Emergency Services means I will now be ready for the next floods and bushfires.”

Now, Kim has returned to the classroom to gain new qualifications and prove to herself that education truly is a life-long journey.

But she knows only too well that finding gainful employment – even with further education and training – is never easy.

“I’ve applied for over 1000 jobs. I’ve been shortlisted dozens of times,” Kim says of her pandemic job search.

“I’ve been told I’m overqualified, too old, too female, too experienced. I’ve been let down. Promises have been broken. I’ve been offered jobs overseas that I can’t travel to.

“At times, I’ve felt isolated and alone. But I’m still hopeful. I know I’m not the only one who’s life has been unexpectedly turned upside down.

“Resilience does not come naturally. You have to work on it, and you have to be intentional about implementing positive strategies into your everyday life.”

Kim certainly has learnt some harsh lessons, but she hopes that her example might help others struggling to maintain a positive outlook day-to-day.

Recycled fashion helps great cause

A

much-loved recycled fashion and homewares store has opened its second location – and it’s set to benefit some of the Coast’s most vulnerable people.

Independent op shop White Tigress and Co has been operating from Coolum since October, with a percentage of profits donated back to SunnyKids, a local charity that provides support for families suffering the adversity of domestic violence.

Now owner Christine Mai has opened a second White Tigress store, this time a recycled fashion boutique in Buderim, and it’s hopefully going to mean even larger contributions to SunnyKids.

“I have a goal with SunnyKids with what I would like to provide for them, so to do that I needed to expand,” Christine says.

SunnyKids general manager Kathleen Hope says the generosity of Christine and the White Tigress team is invaluable to the charity.

“Christine had a real interest in giving back to those who had experienced domestic and family violence, and she had this dream of having a boutique shop as a way of doing that,” she says. “She wanted to partner with us if possible so that proceeds from what she brought in at the shop would contribute to the support services we have available on the ground, and of course that was something we agreed with.

“I met with Christine and we just had a bit of a chat about what her vision was, which was just amazing – her heart was really in the right place. We partnered together and she created the op shop that is in Coolum, and then this is now her sister boutique shop.”

Christine says she is in awe of the work done by SunnyKids, which provides emergency accommodation and counselling to those in need.

“I was introduced to SunnyKids through DV Connect when I decided to do an op shop and support domestic violence victims,” she says. “I was thankfully introduced to Kathleen from SunnyKids and we connected straight away.

“The organisation is just amazing and we could both see the vision. I’m just really grateful to be working with SunnyKids as they’re fantastic.”

But the opening of the Buderim boutique was not without its hitches. It was due to open on Thursday, July 1, but was delayed because of the COVID lockdown until Saturday, July 3. Christine, however, saw a silver lining.

“We sort of looked at it as a positive so we could do more finishing touches to give that better experience when people first come in,” she says.

the original Coolum store. “Buderim is our first sister store, our White Tigress boutique store – it’s for label lovers, fashion lovers,” she says. “Our Coolum store is for op shop lovers.”

A single mother of three, Christine has called the Coast home for the past eight years after moving from Phillip Island in Victoria, and has worked in retail her whole life.

“I started off at McDonald’s and I’ve been in retail since then,” she says. “It’s just something that I live and breathe. I’m very passionate about customer service and at White Tigress, we like to provide fantastic customer service and give people a full experience when they come into one of our shops, whether it’s the op shop or the boutique.

“We’re really proud to be supporting SunnyKids and after all the years in retail, just to be able to do something and know that you’re giving back to something that’s actually making a difference to people’s lives, that’s the biggest thing. It just makes you feel that job satisfaction on the next level.”

full-time by Portia Sullivan, who herself started as a volunteer at Coolum. Portia also looks after the marketing for both locations.

And there’s a special behind-the-scenes helper, who unfortunately missed the opening of the Buderim store.

“My mum, my beautiful mother, she was going away so she wasn’t here for the opening, and I was like, ‘What am I going to do without my mum?’” Christine says. “She washes and irons everything for Coolum and Buderim. She did an amazing job before she went away of ironing absolutely everything and making sure everything was beautiful for our opening.”

Kathleen says SunnyKids would be more than happy to hear from other businesses interested in collaborating with the charity.

“Absolutely,” she says. “If there are more businesses that are wanting to partner with SunnyKids in this way, every little bit really does make a difference. I know that sounds like a cliche but we see how that makes a difference directly to people that we support, so we’re always open for that sort of collaboration.

“I’m just really excited for Christine, her heart is really in it. She’s put everything into both stores and she gives so much from it for us, so we’re so grateful.”

Horsing around is serious business

hat begins for some kids as the chance to have a day off school quickly becomes a transformative experience that changes their life forever.

That’s the power of horse-facilitated learning, says Leading the Way International founder Alane Millions (aka AJ), who works with Sunshine Coast school students to build respect and confidence, and give them the skills to take control of their emotions and their future.

While some call it equine therapy, AJ prefers to steer clear of the term because her programs teach essential life skills and provide support to expand a person’s quality of life.

“We want to stop putting tiny Band-Aids on gaping wounds of children, give them a safe place to grow and learn how to stop dysfunctional cycles and create positive futures,” AJ says.

“We develop emotional intelligence, personal awareness and relationship skills through participants learning directly from horses.”

She says the classes balance theory sessions with authentic, real-life practice that involve grooming and handling.

“Horses don’t judge. They are very honest creatures … and they see us for who we really are,” she says.

“For children with trauma involving human relationships, opening up to another human immediately

presents challenges and road blocks. Partner them with a horse and you can see the progress very quickly.”

Serifina was one such student who begrudgingly went along to get a day off school.

“When I was first invited to the equine therapy I was sceptical,” she says.

“I had spent years in and out of therapies, none of it had

worked, so how could some mumbo jumbo horse therapy help?

“But it really, really did. I agreed to go even though I was sceptical because I wasn't going to miss out on the opportunity to take a day off school.

“The first visit was really nice, everyone was lovely, positive, and the property was beautiful, but I still held on to my whole negative, sceptical mindset. It wasn't until the third visit that I really let go of that and starting taking things on board. Once this happened, I really started to learn.”

Serifina says she came to realise that she was responsible for how she felt and learnt how to control her feelings.

“I learnt about how to put up boundaries and let people in or push them away if I need to, I learnt about my brain and why it works in the way it does and how to change the way it works if it’s not doing what I want it to,” she says.

“I now have a better relationship with my family, friends and myself.”

The school-based programs are designed to build respect and confidence, teach controlling emotions, understanding aggression and bullying, learning resilience, applying problem solving, acquiring verbal and non-verbal communication skills, exploring neuro-biology and wielding power appropriately.

AJ says that one of the first things she teaches participants is to step back and breathe.

“It’s important to understand that by stepping back and taking a big, deep breath, it shows the horses that we mean them no harm and it gives them the time to feel comfortable having us near them,” she says.

“Horses are very sensitive to how we are feeling and can pick up on our emotions like anger, sadness and frustration.

They can also sense a lack of confidence.

“So often the students will come in and pick one of the horses that they like and want to work with, but the horses have other ideas.

“I like to let the horses choose who they want to be partnered with for each course and it’s sometimes surprising which student they choose.”

Canadian-born AJ has a Diploma in Community Services and learnt early on to put her trust in her horses.

“I grew up on a ranch in Canada with my grandfather, who was a horse trainer, but he only taught me how I didn’t want to train horses,” she says. “When I started training my own horse as a teenager, I decided to do everything the opposite way to my grandfather. I didn’t want to be cruel or forceful; I wanted to work with the horse.”

Park in 2012 and has been supporting schools and at-risk youth on the Sunshine Coast ever since.

For a woman who had what she describes as “a less than ideal childhood”, it’s her way of sharing her knowledge with others.

She’s surrounded herself with 12 acres of calm and her herd of facilitators grazing lazily in the paddock when they’re off-duty – lead mare Fly, lead stallion Holmes, stallions Slash, Baloo and Chico, mare NeeGee and geldings Tahi, Maverick, Flynn and Roo. In addition, she has a team of qualified helpers, including Amy Wilson, Claire Meraki, Courtney Brown, Piper Grant and Korin Kilgore.

And it’s not just students that AJ’s horse-facilitated learning programs are tailored to help. She also runs programs for community groups, corporate entities, veterans and families to tackle a range of issues from leadership and motivation through to healing past traumas.

any Coast residents have been affected by the ongoing restrictions on international travel, but there’s one community group in particular that’s been hit harder than most.

Friendship Force Sunshine Coast is a group based around ‘home hosting’ international visitors. Members invite visitors to live with them and share meals, ideas and customs, and in turn members venture overseas to receive the same hospitality.

The group’s activities are all done in the name of friendship and cultural understanding, and its motto is “a world of friends is a world of peace”.

But since international travel restrictions have been in place, the group has been forced to change tack. Members have instead been busy supporting local communities by journeying around the region, as well as hosting local events.

“Since COVID and the need to modify the activities and extend the fellowship within the club, we have decided to explore and support our local communities,” says Robyn Stewart from Friendship Force Sunshine Coast. “So, apart from Zoom trivia nights, local dinner dates, picnics and theatre evenings, the club has journeyed around the Sunshine Coast visiting sites from Gympie to the Glass House Mountains, the hinterland to the beaches.”

Friendship Force Sunshine Coast is a non-profit, non-political group founded in 1989, and part of a global network of more than 300 clubs. The local group began when founding member Glenys Marsh advertised in the local paper for home hosts for 27 members from Atlanta, Georgia. The response was immediate and the exchange was a success for making friendships, learning about different cultures and showcasing the Coast. Since then, the club has gone on 78 overseas journeys to 22 different countries and hosted 76 overseas clubs from 17 different countries.

without its cross-cultural amusements. Robyn mentions an incident with Dutch visitors who, after a swim at Maroochydore beach, stripped off entirely to dry off before getting dressed. They were surprised to learn Australians don't view the naked body as normal on their beaches.

Friendship Force Sunshine Coast has also stepped up to help those in need. In 2013 the club hosted 20 children and three chaperones from Japan.

“These highly traumatised kids had lost parents and other family members as a consequence of the tsunami that hit northern Japan in 2011,” Robyn says. “To add to this problem, the group were also exposed to the nuclear power plant at Fukushima damaged by earthquake at that time.

“The idea of the humanitarian exchange was first raised by club past president Graeme Donaldson but

Jean says: “Although we are not usually fundraisers, we had much support from Friendship Force members and clubs worldwide, church groups, Rotary clubs and friends and family members (through) organised raffles, garage sales and publicity for the event.

“A committee of club members organised visits to surf clubs, a school, university, Australia Zoo, a croquet club, a family sports day at the botanic gardens and other coastal activities.

“We all – hosts and visitors – made many new friends, learnt about different President David Allen and wife Jenny with Julie Burke and Coral and Ron Usher at Bankfoot House earlier this year

cultures and customs, and saw what could be achieved by co-operating with people from disparate backgrounds.

Sad children became happy while living with new families.

One boy who had not spoken after the shock of losing both parents learned to play card games and laugh again, and they shared their traumatic experiences with us.”

The group’s recent activities have included a guided a tour through the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra by pilot and aviation buff Noel Dennett, and a fellowship picnic with the North Moreton Friendship Force. Sixteen members also embarked on an intrepid 3179km adventure west to Charleville and Thargomindah. Members are now planning a visit to Perth later this year.

“Club members might be grounded due to COVID restrictions around the world but they are certainly maintaining their spirit of adventure and innovation,” Robyn says.

“Normally the members would be planning the next year's program to visit associated clubs both overseas and around Australia, however the compromise focus has evolved into explorations of our local environment with all its attractions.”

Charity group Waves of Kindness has made a $50,000 donation to fellow Noosa organisation Youturn Youth Support for its Big Hearts for Tiny Homes campaign.

The tiny homes provide short-term, transitional housing to young people in need of homelessness support.

Each year the Zonta Club of Noosa awards bursaries to two women undertaking studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

This year’s winners are mature-age students Inali Lutschini, who won the Women in Science Bursary for her Bachelor of Science majoring in biotechnology, while Krystal Sinn won the Indigenous Women’s Bursary to assist her in completing her law degree.

Twenty-seven teams from the Sunshine Coast will be joined by 65 teams from the Fraser Coast for the 2021 Dunga Derby charity rally. Teams will assemble at Aussie World in Palmview from 7.30am on Thursday, July 29, before travelling from coast to country, returning on Sunday, August 1.

The Dunga Derby raises funds for Rally for a Cause, which supports families with life-limiting medical conditions.

Since 2015 it has raised more than $1.3 million.

Music legend Angry Anderson will be a special guest in the derby and singer Caitlyn Shadbolt will perform on night three.

Remembering the role of POWs

oor Nicola. His part in the war was over almost before it started ... and ultimately brought him to Buderim.

Nicola Evangelista, a farmer from Cassino in the province of Frosinone in Italy, was a private with the Italian guard unit II Reggimento Granatieri di Savoia during World War II. He was stationed with his unit at Keren in Italian East Africa (Ethiopia) in March 1941 when British and Allied armies overran the area. Nicola spent the next four years as a prisoner of war.

The place has a working pearl farm named "Willie Creek Pearls", which gives chance for a fascinating two-hour eco-tour of its aquatic beds and gives a chance to learn about the industry's astonishing History.

December 29, 1943, before being transferred to Cowra No.12 (A) on December 30. He later transferred to the Gaythorne detention centre in Brisbane.

Another casualty of war was Buderim farmer Henry Ernest Beamish.

Although born in London, Beamish had migrated to Australia and was living in Brisbane during World War I, when he enlisted with the AIF on August 18, 1915. He was appointed to the 15th Battalion (12th Reinforcement).

Beamish was returned to Australia suffering severe shell shock after an explosion left him half-buried and unconscious. His experience of war left him with longterm nerve damage, nervousness and insomnia.

By 1944, Beamish was living with his wife Agnes and four school-age daughters on his Buderim fruit farm. With just the girls plus his own poor health, he needed help with farm machinery and heavy lifting. He was one of the many local farmers who volunteered to take in prisoners of war.

On March 3, 1944, Henry Beamish was assigned three young men: Nicola Evangelista, Sebastiano Fresilli and Tommaso Mallozzi.

Beamish supplied a hut for the men with beds, toilets, showers and food. The POWs worked a six-day week and on Sundays the farmer had to allow them to attend church. As most POWs were well behaved, quiet and good workers, they were welcomed into the local communities.

Nicola had been working on Beamish’s farm only about 14 months when he became ill. He was just 28 years old when he died on April 30, 1945, from lobar pneumonia and pancreatitis. He was buried at Nambour Cemetery on May 1, 1945. The only remaining record of him is a burial card for Old Nambour Cemetery held by Genealogy Sunshine Coast saying “EVANGELISTE, Nicola, age 26 yrs, Italian POW, Religion RC. NB1 08 19.

Burial No. 16558”.

His remains were later sent to the Italian Ossuary in Victoria, where commemorations are held each year. Nicola’s family in Italy, who had wondered about his whereabouts for more than 70 years, now have peace in knowing his final resting place.

Nicola’s story is included in a book called Walking in their Boots by Joanne Tapiolas. She is part of an Australia-wide project to link Italian families with lost relatives, and runs a Facebook page that continues to look for more information.

Organic wines are making their mark WINE TIME

A

s you read this column, we find ourselves somewhere near the second half of the month commonly known as Dry July. You may also know its siblings FebFast and OcSober. It’s a month where abstinence from alcohol is encouraged, to raise some valuable money for a good cause, with the added overall health benefits and of course giving the old liver a break.

As someone who enjoys beer, wine and various spirits, I have completed this challenge in the past and take my hat off to all those who take on what I truly believe is a tough assignment. Those who embark on this endeavour will have their character and resolve tested as they try to withstand not only their own internal force of habit, but the added social pressure of what to drink when out with mates, at the footy or at a wedding.

The culture of having a drink when socialising is strongly embedded in our social fabric, which is why I ask the following questions: What do you drink as a substitute for alcohol? Are you going cold turkey, locking the front door, shutting down the social calendar and not returning phone calls from friends? Are you choosing to be the designated driver with a soft drink or sparkling water with lime? Or, alternatively, are you trying some of the new zero-alcohol options on the market? I have used all the above techniques with varying success.

You may not have heard but zero-alc beers are a growing trend here in Australia, and in other parts of the world have become an established part of the market.

In Germany more than 11 per cent of total beer sales are

from this category. The big commercial breweries have had a few available here in the Aussie market for a while: Carlton Zero, Heineken 0.0, Peroni Libera and now, with its big marketing budget, you must have spotted the blue marlin zero-alcohol offering from Great Northern?

If these guys are prepared to invest money into it then you can guarantee there must be something in it for them too. Heineken spent $50 million launching its 0 per cent beer!

While personally I think all the above taste like bin juice (there goes my free samples for future articles), there are surprisingly a few good options made here in Australia. Check out Heaps Normal XPA, and Nort from Modus Operandi, which are my pick of the bunch.

Would I choose them over a regular mid or fullstrength beer? No chance. Would I choose them over water or soft drink? Sometimes. Do they provide a social way to enjoy a drink with mates? I think so, and so do plenty of others based on the increase in sales.

Locally, our breweries have not yet opted to make a zero-alc beer, mainly due to the cost and time involved.

But if you are looking for a local alternative then check out the zero-alcohol Hop Valley H2O from the crew at Heads of Noosa. This is a zero-sugar, zero-alcohol, sparkling, hop-infused water. For a hop-loving beer fan like me, I highly recommend giving this a try. In fact, I’ve been known to drink these while driving a brewery tour.

Hats off again to all the Dry July gang this month.

While I love a beer, I also think it is important to have a healthy relationship with alcohol and to drink responsibly.

Drink local, drink responsibly or even drink a zeroalcohol beer and tell me what you think.

ontinuing the journey of exploring the range of organic wines available, we are delving into the world of whites this month – more specifically, the See No Evil 2020 rose, the Indigo Organic Grape Growers Collective 2019 white and the Hear No Evil 2020 sauvignon blanc.

In case you missed my last column, the list of benefits for drinking organic wine includes no harmful chemicals, fewer sulphites, less added sugar, fewer additives, hangovers are not as bad, and higher concentrations of antioxidants.

The See No Evil 2020 rose ($20) is a grenache, shiraz and ruby cabernet blend that offers scents of sweet rose petals, red fruits and spice notes on the nose. The flavour is of vibrant red berries and candied fruit, with a crisp acidity and long, dry finish.

This dry wine certainly benefitted from being paired with the richness of garlic prawns, and I really don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much with a more delicate seafood flavour pairing.

Much kinder on the palate was the Indigo Organic Grape Growers Collective 2019 white ($20).

This rich blend had aromas of lemon citrus and florals, and a real buttery flavour to follow.

This is a satisfying and fuller-flavoured fresh white wine, but do not bother cellaring this one – drink it straight away.

The Indigo Grape Growers Collective is a modern range of organic wines sourced and crafted by a small number of like-minded vignerons from their organically grown vineyards in the historic wine regions of north-eastern Victoria. Though collectively known as the greater Indigo region, more specifically the fruit for these wines was grown in the heart of Rutherglen and neighbouring Glenrowan, famous for producing warm, fuller-bodied wine styles with rich flavours and heady aromatics.

And, finally, the Hear No Evil sauvignon blanc ($20) was crafted by the fusion of 5 per cent viognier grapes with 95 per cent sauv blanc grapes.

The grapes are handpicked and chilled before being fermented in stainless steel. The result is a wine with a pale straw hue with bright green tints.

The delicate bouquet offers fresh aromas of gooseberry, white apple, river stone and florals, and the intense palate is filled with flavours of passionfruit, citrus and lime.

The finale is elegant and enticing. Drink this with freshly shucked oysters.

FLAXTON FOOD, DRINK AND DINE CAULIFLOWER AND CURRIED LENTIL SOUP Serves: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Fruit and veg: 2½ serves per portion Ingredients 1 cauliflower, trimmed of leaves, chopped roughly 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons fennel seeds 1 cup red lentils 3 tablespoons curry paste 1L vegetable stock, salt reduced ½ lemon, juiced and zested Method • Preheat oven to 180C. Line baking tray with baking paper.

• Heat half the oil in a large pot. Add lentils and stir through curry paste, adding vegetable stock, then bring to a slow boil. Simmer for 25 minutes until lentils are cooked through.

• Toss the cauliflower in a bowl with remaining oil and fennel seeds until evenly coated.

• Arrange cauliflower over baking tray in single layer and roast in oven for 15 minutes.

• Cool cauliflower slightly then add to deep jug to blitz with stick blender until smooth.

• Add cauliflower to cooked curried lentils and stir through with lemon juice and zest.

What’s great about it?

Roasting vegetables is the best way to develop their flavor. Pumpkin or tomatoes with basil could be substituted for cauliflower for two interesting options.

• Place sweet potato, spring onions and half the chilli in a bowl and dust with half of the flour mixture.

Book puts spotlight on bullying

Rotary club asking community for help

T

he Rotary Club of Buderim, which has been working for the local community for the past 27 years, urgently needs help to find space where it can store its goods.

In a few weeks the club will lose its storage facility and needs a small piece of land, shed or part of a warehouse where it can keep items such as its barbecue trailer.

“We are used to people coming to us for help, not the other way around, but we have every confidence in the generosity of our local community,” says Buderim Rotary member Cathy McKenzie.

The club is well respected in the community for its organisation of the Buderim Australia Day event, as well as its involvement with the yearly Street Party, Carols in the Park, Walk for Mental Health, Pride of Workmanship Award and, this year, the inaugural Book and Puzzle Sale.

For many years a generous Buderim local has allowed the club to store its goods in its own shed on his large block of land where the Buderim Men’s Shed was located. The Men’s Shed has since relocated and the land has been sold, meaning the club needs to relocate its goods.

“We are hoping that someone in our community might have some spare land big enough for us to erect our 3m x 5m shed, or a vacant shed or garage they don’t use,” Cathy says.

A

Sunshine Coast mum and casual primary school teacher has written her first children’s book, which aims to stimulate conversations about the prevalence of bullying among children.

Lisa Edgar’s The Playground Hero is a heartfelt and beautifully illustrated story about a schoolboy named Jack who doesn't have any friends and explores the hurtful feelings of being lonely, isolated and bullied. It also shows how sport can be a great way to bring a group of very different kids together and find common ground.

“As a primary school teacher and a mum, I’ve spent a lot of time around children,” she says. “In doing so I’ve seen a lot of bullying, and I’ve also seen many acts of kindness. I wrote this book to put a spotlight on both of these topics and to hopefully give parents a tool to influence their children in a positive way.”

Lisa, who lives at Peregian Springs with her two children and two dogs, has taught at a range of primary schools throughout Australia and abroad, and holds post-graduate qualifications in applied linguistics.

“I’m hoping the book will become a call to action for children to make a positive difference in somebody else’s life through inclusion,” she says. “It is a perfect example of modelling to children the actions underpinning the words, which are quite simply ‘be kind, always’.”

Foundation grants go to those in need F our organisations providing support to people on the Coast experiencing homelessness and financial distress due to domestic violence and other circumstances have received grants totalling $110,000 from the Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund.

Youturn Youth Support received funds to fit out two tiny homes, which will provide affordable living for vulnerable young people, and support for driver’s licence costs for four young people.

SunnyKids received a grant to provide assistance to 100 individuals at risk of homelessness due to domestic violence and economic instability.

Ozharvest received money to purchase more than 16 tonnes of food to support 20 agencies that provide essential meals for people in need.

And Lily House received a grant to provide funding for emergency living and school needs, and food support for women and their children in crisis.

These grants are the first to be distributed from the newly established Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund, which is the result of a large donation by Coast residents Roy and Nola Thompson.

“The Buderim Foundation knows what it’s doing and does it well,” Mr Thompson says.

The foundation was established in 2004 and, thanks to strong community support, has a $2 million fund that has been used to provide grants.

To date it has distributed grants worth almost $637,000 to 83 local communities. It is now the sixth largest community foundation in Australia.

Our giant of the insect world NATURE

F

rom time to time over the years I have seen a laughing kookaburra flying away from the tops of the massive eucalyptus trees growing some 50m from the house carrying in its substantial beak what looked, initially, to be a short stick with a cleft at one end. The bird’s excitement, sometimes coupled with the fact another kookaburra was flying in eager pursuit, suggested to me that whatever was being carried was probably some sort of substantial meal.

A quick check through the binoculars revealed the ‘stick’ was a little floppy and quite bright green in colour, leading me to conclude the precious prize was, in fact, a goliath stick insect (Eurycnema goliath).

Endemic to Australia, it is the second largest stick insect

to be found here after the titan stick insect. It is, however, not widespread, with its strongholds being here in south-east Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales, with small populations in northern Queensland, mainly around Cairns, and a few sightings in the Northern Territory.

These massive insects – the males can grow to 15cm and the females 20cm – are folivorous (leaf eaters) and favour eucalyptus and broad-leaved acacia trees. It is reported a fully grown insect will eat about 10 leaves each day. Although officially classed as common, they are, for essential survival purposes, not easy to see and because, from my experience, they seem to prefer the giddy heights near the top of their eucalyptus home.

I did once see one of these fascinating insects, probably a female, flutter from the upper branches. Quite clearly, so did an ever-watchful kookaburra for, just after it touched the ground, it was quickly pounced upon and the perceived delicacy was immediately whisked away for consumption far from the eyes of any other birds that might be tempted to participate in the banquet.

Both sexes have wings but the females, due to their size and weight, are incapable of real flight, while the males have rather larger wings, which, coupled with less body weight, enable them to fly quite strongly. The insect I was able to photograph does, in view of what can be seen, give rise to quite a number of questions. Bear in mind that this particular male specimen was fully grown around the expected 15cm.

While it can be seen that the wing furthest away is perfectly formed, the nearest wing is quite clearly malformed. Was it born like this, or has it been damaged as the insect grew, either by an attacking bird or possibly by being injured while escaping a bushfire? As the insect can thrive simply by crawling about its chosen food-source tree, it is possible that it has lived satisfactorily with this handicap since birth and, all being well, may still be doing so today, if it has not revealed itself to the local kookaburra community.

Before reaching adulthood, our goliath would have gone through five developmental stages called instars, where the exoskeleton is shed to permit growth. At each of these instars, one or more changes will occur in respect of size, colouration, sexual dimorphism (visible differences between male and female), leg length and wing development. The final moult will reveal their apple green colouration and unfolding of wings to their full size.

To live to the ripe old age of a possible five years, the insect will need to learn all the defensive tricks, including remaining motionless to rely on natural camouflage, flashing the bright red underside of their wings as a warning, kicking its spiny legs and emitting an off-putting hissing sound to deter would-be predators.

Keep those beloved pets warm in winter

inter is well and truly with us and our animals feel the cold almost as much (if not more) than we do. Did you know pets get hungrier in the cold months? But be careful not to over-feed them and keep them at a healthy weight for their own comfort.

It’s important to look after our pets in changing seasons, especially younger and older ones, and ones with short coats. Even though they have fur they still feel the wind, wet and cold.

Here’s some simple tips to help your pets get through winter without too much discomfort: • Keep them indoors at night if possible.

• If they do have to be outside, don’t leave them unattended for long periods of time.

• If they are outside make sure they have a kennel or cat enclosure that is waterproof and wind-proof. Ideally kennels should be off the ground.

• Make sure bedding is clean, dry and warm, and in a sunny spot where possible.

• Padded bedding is best for dogs and cats with arthritis.

• Get some warm pet clothing.

• Keep exercising your dogs, just make sure they are warm and comfortable while out.

• Limit outdoor time for cats and dogs when it’s windy and raining.

• Make sure they still have access to drinking water.

Missed a trick?

So Nambour has had some new branding lately, I am Nambour, which I read is part of the Nambour Economic Transition Strategy. Apparently it “invites business to collectively market under one consistent look and feel to encourage business investment and pride in the town”.

It’s a nice idea, so could someone involved explain why only a handful of businesses from the town were in the promo video? Surely it would have been a perfect time to show a wide range of businesses, community groups and locals? Where were the cafes? Where was the Nambour Book Exchange? What about the market? How about Backbeat Records? Or the local newsagent? And where was the marvellous Lind Lane Theatre, which has been established in Nambour for more than 75 years?

Our town is diverse and eclectic, and deserves more than just four or five people or businesses in the promo.

The marketing team behind this have missed a trick – and a huge chunk of Nambour.

‘Alarming abrogation’ Here we go again. The Australian National Audit Office has released its report into the National Commuter Car Park Fund distribution immediately prior to the last federal election. $660 million of public money was distributed to either Liberal-held or marginal seats to the disadvantage of

CREATIVE CUTS SUNNY COAST TIMES Ensemble Beyond Borders will give Songs of Gaia its world premiere at Horizon Festival

Connecting cultures

he Sunshine Coast’s premier arts and cultural celebration Horizon Festival returns from August 27 to September 5, bringing together local and national artists to offer vibrant, immersive and entertaining

experiences for all ages. Among the 10 days and nights of music, visual art, theatre, dance, film, spoken word, comedy and more is Songs of Gaia, a cross-cultural music performance that reflects on diversity and the importance of our planet.

Songs of Gaia director and musician Linsey Pollak says

it will be the world premiere performance from Ensemble Beyond Borders, which features eight musicians from different cultural backgrounds.

“The idea is that the group is working together to create new music that reflects the diversity of everyone’s cultures,” he says.

The musicians are Airileke Ingram, Bukhchuluun Ganburged, Lizzie O’Keefe, Lyndon Davis, Nadia Sunde, Tenzin Choegyal, Tunji Beier and Linsey himself. They cover cultural backgrounds including Mongolian, Indonesian, Papua New Guinean, Croatian, Indian and more.

“You’ve got local Kabi Kabi elder Lyndon Davis, who’s the didge player with the group, so he represents the local Indigenous people from this area,” Linsey says.

“Then you’ve got Tenzin, who’s quite a renowned Tibetan musician. He came here as a refugee many years ago but here’s been here now for a number of decades.

He’s well known around the world, he’s done collaborations with a whole range of people globally and he’s also really experienced with this kind of cross-cultural collaboration.

“And then you’ve got myself, who’s another example of various mongrel Australians who have really mixed heritage – my father was Austrian, my mum comes from a Norwegian background. But I fell in love at an early age with Macedonian music and went and lived in Macedonia to study the traditional music there.

“All the musicians are really at the very top of their game.”

Linsey says Songs of Gaia will feature pieces specially developed for the ensemble.

“Rather than bring existing pieces into the group, what we’re doing is, as a group, we experiment, we jam, we

ix local artists are in the running for the prestigious 2021 Sunshine Coast Art Prize, after the 40 finalists were announced.

Miles Allen (Flaxton), David Green (Buderim), Jennifer Herd (Eumundi), Peter Hudson (Maleny), Trevor Purvis (Cooroy) and Amanda Shadforth (Alexandra Headland) were among those selected from the 425 submissions received from across Australia.

Entries covered a range of genres including painting, drawing, photography, printing, textiles and assemblage.

The winning artists will be selected by Renai Grace, director/CEO of the Museum of Brisbane, and announced at a gala event on September 23. The major prize winner will receive $25,000 cash, sponsored by

“The standard of finalist works in this year’s exhibition is remarkable,” gallery director Jo Duke said. “We are delighted to have Renai joining as guest judge, bringing her expertise to the challenging task of choosing this year’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize winners.

“There are six Sunshine Coast locals in the finalist selection, which demonstrates the creative talent we have right here in our region.”

The work of all 40 finalists will be on display at the Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 27 to October 10. Finalist works are also available to view online now at gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

improvise, and pieces develop out of that,” he says. “Then we work on those pieces to give them form and shape.

“It’s like each piece is really a combination of the people in it. It’s sometimes duos, sometimes trios, sometimes quartets, sometimes all eight of us, so it will be like a 70-minute journey that really just explores the music that we’ve developed.”

It won’t just be the music that takes the breath away – Songs of Gaia will be performed at Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains at sunset.

“Songs of Gaia is taking on Horizon Festival’s theme of place, and the importance of place, so it’s celebrating the

Glass House Mountains,” Linsey says. “The audience will be looking out to Mount Tibrogargan as the sun is setting, so it starts on dusk and goes into night.

“It’s a celebration of the planet and the connectedness of everything and the importance of diversity, so the music reflects that importance of cultural diversity.

“What we’re trying to say with Songs of Gaia is all about the fact that we’re all connected in some way. Basically Gaia, or the Gaia concept, is the idea that the planet is one complete system – which sometimes people call ‘nature’ or ‘Mother Earth’ – but basically it’s one system that we’re all part of.”

Linsey, who’s also a renowned instrument maker, was recently recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to music.

“One of the things I’m very passionate about is the importance of music to us, and particularly community music … As well as performing I’ve done lots and lots of projects over the years all over Australia that get community groups playing music,” he says. “I guess the OAM was a response to that, the work in the community with music as well as the work that I’ve done setting up the multicultural music centre over in Western Australia and all the other various performances, both nationally and internationally.”

A resident of the Coast for 30 years, the past nine of them in Maleny, Linsey has performed at Horizon Festival several times previously and says the event is a credit to the region.

“It’s a great festival and we’re very lucky to have it run on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “I particularly love the way it links place, environment and the arts, and that it’s across different art forms … I think it’s really well curated and a fantastic boon to the region.”

Horizon Festival artistic director Dr Lynne Bradley says this year’s festival will shine a spotlight on the extraordinary talents of Sunshine Coast and Queensland artists.

Keeping it all in the family

S

unshine Beach local David Williamson, widely recognised as Australia’s most successful playwright, will see his 2001 play Up For Grabs explode onto the Noosa Arts Theatre stage in July and August – but be warned, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The production will be a Williamson family affair, with David’s sons Rory and Felix also involved. Rory, who runs his own successful real estate agency Williamson & Co in Noosa Junction after moving to the area in 2016, will direct his father’s play, while Felix, a Sydney-based actor and National Institute of Dramatic Art graduate, will play Manny, a successful entrepreneur with a dark secret.

Up for Grabs asks whether art dealers are parasites or prophets. Simone Allen would prefer to see herself as the latter, but when she is given the opportunity of her career, a chance to sell one of the better Brett Whiteleys, her behaviour becomes less than angelic as the pressure mounts.

Driven sometimes by greed, sometimes by aesthetics, David’s characters discover how far they will go when more than just a beautiful work of art is up for grabs in this sexy comedy of manners.

It is a visceral, blunt and confronting roller-coaster ride.

It may even shock you. David, who has retired from writing, says it is among his most scandalous works.

“He (Rory) is going to do a production of one of my plays, in fact one of my most outrageous plays, which of course he chose and I have to go into hiding,” David says. “It’s the one Madonna played the lead in London. But this will be a local production with the best local actors.”

Rory last appeared on stage at Noosa Arts Theatre in another of David’s plays, Jack of Hearts, in 2017. He grew up in Sydney and graduated from NIDA in 1999 as an actor. His first role was starring in New Zealand’s favourite serial Shortland Street and he has since been in Paper Giants, Underbelly, All Saints and Home and Away. He also produced the AFI Award-winning documentary That Sugar Film in 2015.

Felix has had a long and successful career in film and TV, memorably playing Paul Keating in Hawke, as well as having roles in The Great Gatsby, Palm Beach, Rake, Mabo, Backyard Ashes, Underbelly, Dirty Deeds and many more.

He wrote, directed and acted in Avalon Now, a hilarious observational take on pretentiousness on the Northern Beaches in Sydney.

The show runs on various dates from July 22 until August 8, with both evening and matinee sessions. The gala opening night on July 23 is presented as part of the NOOSA alive! festival and has already sold out. Proceeds from the July 29 performance will go to assist the people of Cobargo in New South Wales, whose town was destroyed by the devastating bushfires of last year.

Featuring the work of local First Nations artists, the NAIDOC 2021 – Culture Remembered; Revitalised; Reactive exhibition is on show until August 15 at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

The exhibition presents art, stories and cultural works that remember, revitalise and react to the telling of First Nations’ history and combined histories.

Highlights include a full-scale kom'bar (bark canoe) hand-crafted from swamp mahogany by Kabi Kabi artists Lyndon Davis, Kerry Jones and Brent Miller; and a Kabi Kabi community possum skin cloak etched with traditional art and stories, which took six months to create.

First Nations artist Melinda Serico (pictured), whose experience is captured in a digital story, said she was inspired to bring a community group together to create the cloak after learning of the traditional techniques practised by her aunty.

“The experience was absolutely wonderful. We connected regularly on country, exchanging cultural knowledge, family connections, traditional art techniques and stories,” she says.

Tickets are now on sale for the Caloundra Music Festival, which runs from October 1-3.

“We’re pumped to officially announce our return,” festival director Richie Eyles said. “We’re embracing the opportunity to change things up a little and we're working hard to ensure we comply with all requirements to run a COVID-safe event for our community.

“The artist playing schedule will be across four stages and has been themed loosely each day. The Friday line-up includes a mix of rock, blues, roots and reggae bands; a more alternative mix of artists on the Saturday; and Sunday will be a great day for the family with a mix of music genres for all ages.”

The line-up includes Ben Lee, the Whitlams, Ball Park Music, Thelma Plum, the Superjesus, Gyroscope, Sneaky Sound System, Baker Boy and many more, plus a special tribute to the Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers featuring Tim Rogers, Phil Jamieson and Adalita.

The Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific will present Opera in the Hangar on August 28 from 6pm.

The unique event will take place at the Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra and feature the Brisbane-based Underground Opera Company.

Jazz nights hit right note W hile the pandemic has had a huge impact on the arts scene, there is one genre that seems to have flourished: jazz. As a result, the regular Jazz Sessions event has been hugely popular with patrons on the Coast.

The Jazz Sessions transforms one of the Coast’s most popular breweries into an intimate jazz club.

“People have really enjoyed being able to get out, enjoy a meal and soak up some world-class jazz from some of the most talented musicians in Australia,” says organiser Robyn Brown, who is also a jazz singer. “The patrons keep coming back as we present such high-quality acts. Being able to listen to incredible music while you’re enjoying a meal and sipping a glass of wine seems to be a combination that really works.”

On August 1 one of the most talented jazz ensembles in Queensland will present a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald.

The musicians are Marnix van Bruggen, Peter Walters and Max Sportelli, along with Robyn herself.

Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the greatest female jazz singer the world has known. Dubbed “The First Lady of Song”, she had a career that spanned more than 50 years. Robyn and the band will be performing a selection of her songs and telling some of the stories from her extensive career.

Then on August 22 the Jazz Sessions will be hosting its first jam session. With a house band leading the night,

The Sunny Coast Rude Boys are a 10-piece group playing uplifting ska and reggae covers and originals, drawing on musical influences from the Jamaican movement through to British two-tone.

A rock star, Hollywood producer and former Prime Minister believe the Sunshine Coast has the potential to have a significant influence on the film and television industry, so they’ve created a new contest to make it happen.

The Sunshine Coast Showdown will give emerging local talent the chance to kickstart the next step in their dream to break into the world of film and television.

The contest is offering tens of thousands of dollars in production funding across multiple categories to develop, produce and deliver their project, then launch them at a gala night in January.

The contest is backed by Powderfinger drummer Jon Coghill (pictured right), former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Dan Munday (pictured left), who has recently returned from Los Angeles after 18 years working for the likes of MGM and NBC. The trio of former Nambour High School students has united with not-for-profit group the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective.

Bloom, a festival coming to Birtinya’s NightQuarter on Saturday, July 31, promises to an experience by the creative community, for the creative community.

Hundreds of brass musicians are set to descend on Nambour and Sippy Downs for the 52nd annual Festival of Brass.

Brass soloists, ensembles and bands from around the state will participate in two days of entertaining competition on July 24-25.

The event is hosted by Sunshine Brass, one of the oldest volunteer organisations on the Coast, having been established in 1906.

On Saturday, July 24, a solo and ensemble competition is being held at the Salvation Army, Nambour. This day offers many school students the opportunity to play before an adjudicator and audience.

And on Sunday, July 25, at Siena Catholic College in Sippy Downs, eight brass bands will compete.

The Passion on the Passage (POP) Group is presenting the Pelican Collection 2021, its inaugural group exhibition and sale of fine art, from July 24-27.

Featuring the work of 12 members from the small, established group of practised local artists, the offerings include creations in watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel and mixed media. Styles range from traditional to contemporary, impressionism, semi-abstract and abstract.

“The Pelican Collection 2021 is a watershed moment for this group,” curator Jonathan Jones says. “It will shine a light on the amazing depth and breadth of the resident talent in our membership. The high quality and diversity of the artworks displayed for sale will be of an exemplary high standard.”

It is the POP Group’s first exhibition since its inception in 2017. Audiences will have the chance to vote for their favourite artwork.

Time to hit the reset button IMAGE

T

he middle of the year is the perfect time to stop, look and see how we’re going towards accomplishing our goals for 2021. I know I’m well off on a few of mine so it’s time to hit the reset button and celebrate where I’ve had wins and access where I’m falling behind so I can finish this year strong.

I love to honour this time by lighting a candle, getting my favourite hot drink and thinking about and journalling all I’d need to pursue in the next six months.

Consider it a big brain dump of all the things – personal, professional, family, financial, home and so on – that you’d like to see happen. Spend some time focusing on all of these and get going again. Reflect on what, where, how, why, when and who. Write them down and be as detailed as you can be around them. But be sure they’re realistic and attainable, not too complex and unlikely or out of reach.

A mid-year reset is all about what we can accomplish by the end of the year and creating a doable action plan towards it. If that means starting from scratch and doing an entirely new plan because your priorities have changed in these past six months then do it. The next half of the year is far too important to not get real about our plans and purpose, and to waste it doing nothing towards them. Whenever I

do this I often find that some goals lose their value and drop off while others gain value and importance. Don’t forget we’ve had the first half of the year where life has happened and it could have changed how we look at things.

And that’s OK, just adjust, refocus and redefine your goals and begin again.

One of the most powerful things we can do is to look at where we spend our extra time. Is it watching TV, digital overload or being undisciplined, lazy or procrastinating? Consider unfollowing, unsubscribing, and limiting checking your emails, social media and talking on the phone as all of these save us a lot of time. Another helpful idea is to clear out any unwanted or unnecessary items or ideas that keep you from moving towards your plans. Think of it as a deep declutter of anything that doesn’t serve your desires. This keeps us focused on our goals and not pointless considerations.

When we spend time on our brain dump, getting rid of unnecessary things, creating our plan of action and getting more disciplined, we’ll arrive at the end of the year much more fulfilled and happy that we didn’t just coast through until 2022. Now is the perfect time to re-energise our plans and our mid-year reset. And if you’re like me there are many goals you still want to accomplish this year but without making some adjustments they will remain unachieved. I’m determined to make them happen, how about you? We’ve got this!

Bowls champion wins comp pain-free

J

ohn Chapman, a usually very active Maroochydore local, suffered hip pain which meant he could no longer do the activities he loved like 30km bike rides, lawn bowls, kayaking and walking.

After six months of fortnightly physio sessions and the odd painkiller he was still in 9/10 pain after going for a walk, meaning his other activities we're off the table.

"My friend recommended me to try Amino Neuro Frequency (ANF) therapy at Cluzie Clinic as I was still limited in the activities I could do.

Within the first session, my pain went from 7/10 to 1/10 pain within 15minutes. However, the pain came back after about a week.

I ended up having four sessions at Cluzie Clinic over a 4 week period, and the pain has now gone for good.

fter spending the past few years fighting to get a building permit for their dream aircrete dome home, things are getting very busy for Cath and Liz Wild at Elysian Falls in Flaxton.

Their dream home comprises eight arches and four interconnecting aircrete domes. The largest dome has a 7m diameter and 4.6m peak. Its organic shape blends perfectly with the lush rainforest and valley views below.

Aircrete bricks are a DIY alternative to hebel brick, made using a precise foamy mixture of air bubbles and cement. The build requires about 4500 bricks, and Cath and Liz can make about 200 from a day’s pour. They started making the

bricks in January, so things are really starting to take shape.

“What makes aircrete dome building so exciting and unique is its excellent sound and thermal insulation properties, as well as it being water resistant, fire-proof, cyclone-proof, super low cost and very DIY friendly,” Cath says.

Liz adds: “The best part about this build has been connecting to the amazing ‘domie’ community.”

This is the first aircrete dome structure to have council build approval in Australia.

The Wilds hope their building can be a precedent to help other ‘domies’ make their dream homes.

Hardware chain set to open new flagship store

unshine Mitre 10 will celebrate the opening of its new Nambour store on Saturday, July 24.

General manager Neil Hutchins said it was exciting to see the new 13,000 sq m site opening.

“The store at 980 Nambour Connection Road will employ 40 staff and offer the latest variety of products to our retail and trade customers,” he said.

“This new flagship store will include all the latest brands and products, and showcase the best hardware product available. The site will have everything you need to get in, get out, and get on with it.”

With 18 stores throughout Queensland, Sunshine Mitre 10 is one of the largest independently operated and owned hardware suppliers in Queensland.

“We have been steadily expanding over the past few years, with new sites in Bundaberg, St George, Brisbane City and now a flagship in Nambour. This new Nambour location is special because Nambour is where the company’s 110-year history began.

To celebrate the opening at 8am on July 24, the store will have a free sausage sizzle as well as fairy floss and balloon artist for the kids.

“At 10am Scott Cam, host of The Block, as well as 2020 series winners and Sunshine Coast locals Jimmy and Tam, will officially cut the ribbon and open the store. They will be around until noon to chat to fans and take photos.”

ne of the world’s most decorated netballers, former Sunshine Coast Lightning star and Silver Ferns captain Laura Langman, has taken on the role of manager of the Queensland hub of NetFit Netball.

Since retiring from the Lightning last year, Laura has continued to work as an accountant with a local firm but was keen to stay involved in the game and she sees NetFit as the perfect vehicle to share her vast knowledge to the next generation of netballers.

“NetFit Netball has a strong presence in Victoria and New South Wales, and when I was approached to establish its hub in Queensland I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up on,” she says.

“I think it’s a great program which provides young upand-coming players of all ages and abilities the very latest

tools and techniques to improve both on and off the court.

“The program includes weekly fitness videos, fitness plans, coaching drills and session plans, and we’ll be hosting coaching academies, empowering events and health and wellbeing workshops throughout the state.

“I have undertaken some of the programs for NetFit in the past and I really love the holistic nature of the program.

As I like to say, participants come for the netball and many stay for everything else.”

A NetFit tour will take place at Noosa North Shore from September 22-29, and a 10-week NetFit YouFit program is set to commence in October. A nine-month NetFit YouFit academy for players under 15 is also planned.

Engine fumes present danger in wet weather

ecreational boat users are being urged to keep fresh air circulating and exhaust outlets clear to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in wet weather.

Commander Roger Pearce from Coast Guard Caloundra says boaties seeking shelter from wet weather can inadvertently be risking their lives and those of their passengers.

“Boaties who roll down their side covers, curtains or clears to ward off the weather can trap deadly carbon monoxide engine exhaust gases, which would usually be carried away by natural air movement through the cabin,” he says.

“Carbon monoxide is an odourless and tasteless gas, which in high concentrations can be fatal in a matter of minutes. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headaches, nausea, feelings of fatigue and slowed reaction.

“While incidents involving carbon monoxide poisoning are rare, boaties should not be complacent because its effects can be catastrophic.

“Checking the boat exhaust system and ensuring good

ventilation can help ensure you and your passengers return safely.”

Other steps that can be taken to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning include: • keeping forward-facing hatches open to allow fresh air to circulate; • ensuring exhaust outlets are properly vented away from living areas; • performing regular maintenance and looking for signs of leaks in the exhaust system, including water leaks, rust and corroded, cracked or loosened fittings; • replacing any worn parts and ensuring cooling systems are in proper working condition; • ensuring temporary rain and weather covers are not blocking the normal free flow of air around the boat.

Make sure boat passengers are aware of the early possible symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning such as irritated eyes, headaches and dizziness.

If you suspect a person has been affected by carbon monoxide, immediately ventilate the area, move the person and passengers to fresh air, call for emergency assistance and, if the person is not breathing, perform CPR until help arrives.

Do not forget to look after your safety as you are helping others.

utstanding performances by five USC Spartans swimmers at the national trials in Adelaide have earned them places in Australian teams headed for the Tokyo Olympics from July 23 to August 8.

Kaylee McKeown, who broke a world record in the women’s 100m backstroke in the national trials, will compete in that event at the Olympics.

The 19-year-old will also compete in the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley.

Katja Dedekind, Ben Hance, Keira Stephens and Ruby Storm are on the team for the Paralympics, to be held from August 24 to September 5.

All but 19-year-old Katja (pictured) – who took bronze in 100m backstroke at the 2016 Rio Paralympics – are Olympic debutants.

Women prepare to hit the water

A

ll-women crews from around Australia are set to converge for the third Mooloolaba Yacht Club Women’s Keelboat Regatta from July 30 to August 1.

Despite a postponement due to COVID, the 2020 event attracted teams from as far away as Adelaide and Brisbane, with women ranging in age from 16 to over 60.

“Last year saw some great competition and exciting tactical racing,” MYC commodore Tanya Kelly says. “We had a broad range of skill levels and it was fantastic to see the support and camaraderie within – and between – the different crews. We’re looking forward to re-creating that atmosphere this year.”

For the first time, this year the event will include three days of racing, with at least eight crews competing in a short-course, round-robin tournament. The racing will be on board the MYC’s fleet of Elliot 6 keelboats on the Mooloolah River.

“We are looking forward to sharing our idyllic sailing venue with an enthusiastic, like-minded group of female sailors, welcoming back teams from last year as well as new contenders,” Tanya says.

The regatta is run in association with SheSails, the Australian Sailing campaign to increase women’s participation in the sport, and is sponsored by Next Property Group.
