his time every year we pause to commemorate Anzac Day and the sacrifices that have been made to protect our way of life.

In these trying times, the importance of the Anzac spirit is as important as ever. The ideals of mateship, humour, ingenuity, courage and endurance are what bind us as a community.

Although all in-person Anzac Day commemorations were cancelled last year, April 25 always serves as a reminder about how lucky we are to enjoy the freedoms we do.

Thank you to all of our veterans who put their lives on the line to allow us to live the fortunate lives we have today.

This month’s edition of the Sunny Coast Times includes another eclectic range of features, such as our story on 12-year-old singing sensation Layla Barnett, who has benefitted from the mentorship of the Coast’s own superstar Katie Noonan (p4-5); a profile of dog trainer John Borg, who taps into dogs’ natural instincts to bring out their best (p1415); and our cover story on Kerrie Burrows, who is teaching life skills to women through her new She Shed initiative (p6-7).

Reality TV star 'struck gold'

erry Knight knew the odds of finding Mr Right were not in her favour when she signed up to Married at First Sight.

Channel Nine’s reality TV juggernaut is Australia’s most talked-about dating show, but it doesn’t have a very good track record when it comes to happily-ever-afters.

But that’s why the Maroochydore-based occupational therapist considers herself doubly lucky to have found her match in Brisbane theatre producer Johnny Balbuziente.

They are still going strong six months since they tied the knot on the show, which wrapped up in a drama-filled finale this month.

“I struck gold, you might say,” Kerry tells the Sunny Coast Times.

“I knew on the wedding day there was an instant connection … since then, coming back to Brissy and being able to see Johnny in context, all my first impressions were exceeded. I see why he’s the person he is. We just spent Easter together with his family on the Gold Coast – they’re magic.

“Meshing our lives together has been hard but it’s been bloody worth it.”

The lovebirds now split their time between Brisbane and the Coast, where they’ve been spotted by fans at some of Kerry’s favourite haunts.

“All these tradies were going up to Johnny in the car park at Bunnings – that caused a bit of a stir,” she laughs.

“We’ve only had positivity from the people who come up to us on the street.

The feedback’s been that we are too normal to have been on the show.”

The only major drawback from her time on MAFS has been the intense scrutiny of the paparazzi.

“The paps are absolute idiots,” she says.

“They watched Johnny’s house for three days and we had no idea. They got some pretty unsavoury photos of me changing in the car park and threatened us with the photos.

“I was a little naive to be honest. I thought if we’d be out at a restaurant then we’d be asking for that, but I didn’t realise it would command that kind of attention.”

a bit of normality out of the national spotlight, Kerry has some advice for anyone considering a stint on reality TV. “The one thing you can control when you’re in there is what comes out of your mouth,” she says.

“You have to understand they’re there to produce a reality TV show and in that high-pressure environment there are so many opportunities to drop your guard or let the pressure get the better of you.”

Helping women connect We’ve all heard of Men’s Sheds but Kerrie Burrows is about to launch the She Shed, where women can learn, unwind and heal together, writes REBECCA MUGRIDGE

A

t 97 Aerodrome Rd in Maroochydore stood a weathered yellow auto-electrical workshop, graffiti on one wall and cracks in the pavement. For many years, it was a recognisable landmark for locals, part of a strip of older shops in the local streetscape.

Walls caked in grease, wiring that needed fixing and 100-year-old plumbing met Kerrie Burrows when she decided it was the bones of her dream. While some would see problems, the tenacious mum-of-five and grandmother-of-three, who has lived through being homeless with children in tow, saw potential.

It was because of this unwavering determination that others in the community began to believe in her vision for the She Shed.

Kerrie sees the initiative as a special place where all those who identify as women are welcome. She had very specific designs for the place: it would not be styled after a drop-in centre because she wanted it to be a place for all kinds of women to cross paths and interact, from the corporate career woman to the woman who finds herself homeless needing help.

“They will all find friendship, community and connection here,” she says.

Kerrie has found the Coast clearly wants a She Shed too. A simple Facebook post about the She Shed led to 45 messages instantly, 100 emails by that night, and eventually 1000 inquiries and a database of more than 300 women wanting to take classes – and she hasn’t even opened the doors yet.

“The way women are already unravelling their stories to me and contacting me excited, I have no doubt this will take off,” she says.

“There are going to be some beautiful workshops for women in this space, and hopefully some healing for some of these women too.”

It was the sheer weight of community support behind her that really made Kerrie realise it was going to be something special and helped the She Shed to come to life.

“My husband Craig, who has his own powerful story, has been right there by my side the whole way,” she says. “We were self-funding everything and even had a GoFundMe raising around $2000.

“Koastal Gas and Plumbing, I didn’t know him from a bar of soap, he contacted me and said, ‘What do you need plumbing wise?’ He came out and had a look and said the entire building needed new plumbing,” Kerrie says. “We needed to pull all those pipes out and put all new ones in. I told him, ‘OK, send me a quote and I’ll just have to see how we go.’ He did. But he sent me a quote with a zero balance. He said all of the plumbing is on the house, you just need to buy the pipe.”

A shocked Craig asked a friend where he might get the pipe, and that friend – who wishes to not be named – without hesitation paid for the piping throughout the whole building.

The community generosity didn’t stop there.

“Mark from MAD Painting and Decorating donated the entire internal and external building paint, because he wanted to help a place where women can come and feel supported,” Kerrie says.

“Suncoast Electrical did all of our electrical work at a massively reduced price. Kingi Constructions supplied a thousand-dollar beam, and the people to put it in. Sunshine Coast Coffee Machines serviced our machine for free, Robertson Web Design did our signage, Evolve Cabinet Materials donated the She Shed cafe kitchen, and builder friends gave up their time on weekends.

“We have been so fortunate, if we were to add up all of what these people gave, it would be over the $30,000 mark.”

She says the She Shed – which has the tagline ‘she is me. she is you. she is us’ – is about giving women somewhere they can feel happier within themselves.

“For me, She Shed has a dual meaning,” she says. “It is a place that we can get together, all the ‘shes’, and it is a place where we can ‘shed’.

“I’m a furniture restorer; when you do restoration, you take it from something it was and you make it into something it wasn’t. For me, the She Shed is a place where we can all learn, but also where each woman can shed a little bit of herself, leaving having had an experience, leaving having made friends, shared stories. I want them to leave feeling happier or lighter. It is not just a place we come to create stuff.

“A couple of weeks ago I was dropping off a piece of furniture and I had my She Shed T-shirt on. The lady noticed and asked what it was. She said to me, ‘I work as a first responder and I need somewhere like this, somewhere I can go with my girlfriends and enjoy myself and turn my brain off.’”

Unfortunately Kerrie’s preparations for the grand opening on April 29 have been hampered by a foot injury.

“I was helping a friend of mine move using my ute, who

we met through her buying some furniture from me,” she says.

“Their removalist didn’t show up and they had just moved here from another country, so I offered to go and help. As I stepped out of the car I caught my ankle on the kerb and tore both my tendons in my foot.”

The grand opening is a ticketed event and includes free pizza, a glass of bubbly on arrival and a chance for guests to meet some of the many teachers that will be holding workshops and courses. Classes will include furniture restoration, how to use tools, boho creatives, clay and wine classes, and more.

Meteoric rise to fame for talented teen

J

ust 12 months ago, young First Nations vocalist Layla Barnett was in the crowd watching singer Katie Noonan perform at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona. In May, the pair will be on stage together at Eumundi’s Sunshine Sounds Festival.

It will be the largest festival 12-year-old Layla has ever been to – and she’ll be leading the Sunshine Sounds Community Choir on the closing night.

Layla, who will lead the choir along with Germaine Cook and Jonah Hurren, says her favourite song to perform is Special Ones by George.

“I have grown up listening to it,” she says of the song released by Katie Noonan’s former band in 2001.

“I love singing it with Katie as it’s always been a goal of mine to be able to sing it.

“I am very fortunate to have Katie Noonan as a mentor

because most 12-year-olds don’t get these chances and I am very grateful.”

The Peregian Beach teen said she was very excited to be performing at the festival “with all these great artists”.

“I’m looking forward to watching the other artists perform as this will be the biggest festival I’ve ever been to,” she says.

Katie describes Layla as a very special young person.

“To me she seems like an old soul,” she says. “She’s only just turned 12 and she’s very grounded. She has a naturally beautiful voice. She is confident and self-assured.

“She has studied my music a bit and played with me, doing live-streamed concerts from my studio. I have been doing livestreamed concerts on the last Friday of every month, called Live from Zac Hurran’s Rainbow Room, and Layla’s done two with me.

“I posted a video on my Facebook page and it went a bit viral and a few people have reached out.

“It’s been a very special journey getting to know her. I still

can’t believe she’s only 12, and she’s only just turned turned 12, and she’s written a few songs and by god they’re good.”

The two first met when Layla asked Katie to sign her CD after the Majestic Theatre concert. Layla was so inspired that she auditioned – and was accepted into – the Eumundi School of Rock, which has fuelled her passion for music. The rest, as they say, is history … or will be.

The two-day all-ages festival at the Eumundi Showgrounds on May 1-2 boasts an incredible line-up of talented Queenslanders including Kate Miller-Heidke, Busby Marou, Miiesha, Asha Jefferies and Sahara Beck, and local artists such as Andrea Kirwin and the Yama-Nui Social Club, the Dreggs and Band of Frequencies. And of course Katie Noonan herself.

Eumundi-based songstress Katie has organised the festival after receiving an $80,000 Arts Queensland grant late last year.

“One hundred per cent of that money is going straight into the artists’ pockets where they desperately need it,” she says.

“The festival programming is 100 per cent Queensland artists, 50 per cent First Nations, 50 per cent Sunshine Coast and 75 per cent female artists.

“I never program according to quotas, other than all Queensland of course, because it was a Queensland grant.

“I wanted to keep it all Queensland to keep the investment in our community and on top of that all the vendors, all the suppliers, all the crew, absolutely everyone is local so all the money will be staying in community to help all the businesses like the food trucks and bars that have all been hit really hard as well.

“I’ve been a buy local person for many years but even more and more it’s just so important to support local businesses and support Australian made and Australian owned. You can start with music, the food you buy and the beer you drink.”

With local sponsors including Folktale Gin and Eumundi Lager on board, Katie says festival-goers can “eat and drink and listen entirely to Gubbi Gubbi music”.

“On the back of COVID, we’ve set out to create a festival that really brings people together,” Katie says.

The family-friendly and wheelchair-accessible festival on the Labour Day long weekend will have music from 11am-10pm each day (gates open 10am), plus food and drinks available on-site, as well as free local water for those who bring refillable drink bottles.

Tickets are strictly limited due to COVID regulations.

Big band for big album release Sunny Coast singer-songwriter Andrea Kirwin will have a big band on stage with her at the Sunshine Sounds Festival, where she’s releasing her new album Bloom.

Andrea says she tested out a few tracks while touring with Katie Noonan and Louise King late last year and is confident fans will love the chilled vibe of her songs, written through COVID and with the backing of a 13-piece band.

The band is a collaboration of Sunshine Coast musos calling themselves the Yama-Nui Social Club.

The name comes from musician OJ Newcomb and resident producer Paulie Bromley’s studio at Kiels Mountain, Yama-Nui, and means ‘mountain of abundance’.

Both are in the band, with OJ playing bass and Paulie on melodica and tambourine.

Other band members joining Andrea on stage include Brett Orr on drums, Brodie Graham and Tristan Rowley on electric guitar, Angela Newcomb on back-up vocals and percussion, Tanja Hafenstein on congas and percussion, Louise King on cello, Ant Aggs on keyboard, Sarah King on violin, Zac Hurren on tenor sax, Lee Hardisty on tenor sax

“The pros of recording an album during a COVID lockdown is that everybody is around so when I asked them to be a part of the project, they all said yes,” Andrea says.

“Bloom is my most mature album to date. It’s almost a coming-of-age album.”

On the album cover is her favourite COVID purchase, her border collie pup called Teddy.

Andrea says the arrangements and instrumentation are very thought-out and considered, with parts written for strings, the horn section and all instruments in the 13-piece band.

“It’s very much the type of album that sits in the same genre as the kind of soul/jazz of Norah Jones, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Carole King; that kind of easy listening but very groovy kind of sound,” she says.

Continuing an Anzac tradition

A

special relationship, born out of the saddest of circumstances, has made the world of difference to one of the Coast’s World War II veterans.

Every year at Anzac Day, 94-year-old Phil Wilkins is accompanied at the Kawana dawn service by Christine Wellfare.

The two met when Christine, who works for White Lady Funerals in Caloundra, helped arrange the funeral for Phil’s love of his life – his wife Robin, who sadly passed away from lung cancer aged 86 in 2015.

“I lay the World War II wreath at the cenotaph and Christine walks with me – helps keep me steady,” Phil says. “She doesn’t want me falling over!”

Phil, from Wurtulla, served with the 13 Field Squadron of the Royal Australian Engineers of the Australian Army for two years after enlisting at age 18.

He says Anzac Day holds special significance for him.

“My family has a history of serving in the Australian Defence Force,” he says. “My father was in the trenches in France and my brother Frank served with the Royal Australian Air Force (460 Squadron) as a flight sergeant during World War II. Frank was killed aged 21 during a bombing raid in February 1945.

He was a tail gunner during that fateful flight. He’s buried at the Commonwealth war cemetery in Germany. At that very cemetery there’s a stone of remembrance that bears the words ‘Their Name Liveth for Evermore’ from the Old Testament, and that’s my wish for Anzac Day. “I hope Anzac Day will continue for eternity. We owe that to all the men and women who served.

It’s important future generations know of the sacrifices made and for them to remember and honour those men and women.”

Phil, a father of three, was married to Robin for 63 years.

“Not a night passes without me dreaming of her,” he says.

He is a member of the Kawana Waters RSL Sub-Branch and four years ago founded the branch’s Mouldy Oldies club, whose members meet once a month for morning tea.

When his father passed away at age 54, Phil realised he knew nothing about his father’s early life, which is why he has also written a memoir, and created a "memoir starters kit" for fellow World War II veterans and seniors.

"I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't do this to my kids, so I wrote my life story and I am trying to get others to do the same,” he says. “It’s important. It's important for your kids, your grandkids and your great-grandkids. Within the next 10 years there won't be any of us (World War II veterans) left.”

Anzac Day also holds a special place for Christine, from Sippy Downs.

“I had many relatives who fought in the wars, some of whom never came home,” she says. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about his experiences of World War II.” Apart from Anzac Day, Christine also helps Phil attend

Remembrance Day services, and they talk regularly on the phone.

“Especially during COVID last year, I checked in with him regularly to make sure he was OK,” Christine says.

“Phil has faced so many adversities in life – I can’t count how many surgeries he’s had for skin cancers – but he still continues to have a great sense of humour, asking the young nurses to donate to his skin grafts,” she says. “He never complains or says how much pain he is in. He’s such a trooper and a great friend.”

The feeling of respect is mutual between the pair.

“Christine is a lovely person – she’s always there for me, always at the other end of the phone,” Phil says. “It means that someone is out there who cares about you. I live alone after I lost my wife six years ago so it can be lonely now. So when Christine rings up and says ‘g’day’ it’s pretty nice.”

PAYING RESPECTS The Light Up the Dawn initiative, which commenced last year after the pandemic forced the cancellation of inperson services, will return in 2021.

People are encouraged to stand on their driveways or balconies with a light at 6am on April 25 as a show of respect and remembrance.

A

loveable larrikin and former Nambour lad has found a renewed zest for life as a pastry cook and bakery cafe owner on the Granite Belt.

Many Sunshine Coast locals may know Stephen Lambert, 43, from his early teenage years at Nambour State High School, his apprenticeship at Woombye Bakery or later experience at the Hyatt Regency Coolum Resort, where he worked under a Swiss pastry chef who “showed me the path of pastry goodness”.

But after a few years toiling for others in restaurants and bakeries in Sydney and Brisbane, his tree change to Stanthorpe, where he is very much his own boss, is just what he needed.

“I just got really sick of the trade not doing things properly,” he says as he prepares a batch of mixed berry tarts on a Sunday

morning in a behind-the-scenes tour of his business, Zest.

“We packed up to travel around Australia from Brisbane.

“It was a gallant effort: we got to Stanthorpe and that’s it, really.

“I got here and went, ‘It’s a cool little town, a good little community.’

“I moved to the country to start this because I couldn’t do what I do for other people in the city.

“And I just couldn’t get a start in the city – whereas out here, it’s a bit more affordable. It’s a bit cheaper to live. The mortgages are smaller. The rent’s definitely cheaper.

“So we could actually get it going out here – whereas in the city, we had no chance.”

Stephen opened Zest in Maryland St, opposite the grand O’Mara’s Hotel historic Queenslander, eight years ago.

One of many funky new ventures that have opened in the past few years in the region, Zest attracts locals and visitors alike for its footpath al-fresco dining, its graffitied inside walls where many happy customers leave their mark, and the wide range of pastries and baked goods prepared solely by the owner and made fresh daily.

Pies – with all manner of tasty fillings – are his best-sellers but his signature item is his croissants, especially almond (though traditional plain ones are Stephen’s favourite).

His happy-go-lucky personality, broad, boyish smile and easy conversation with strangers must also be a big drawcard.

“I needed a trade where I wasn’t out in the sun because of my good-looking complexion,” ginger-haired Stephen jokes.

“I’ve always enjoyed cooking so it was one of those things at school that I just got into.

“I left school a bit early. My manual arts teacher was like, ‘School’s not for you, Steve.’

“I loved the science and chemistry of it all (cooking). I really enjoy all that.

“And it’s very rewarding filling that shop up every day to as much as I can and then having it emptied every day. It’s an amazing feeling.

“What’s the saying? If you enjoy your job you’ll never work a day in your life. (But) I don’t say that at 3 o’clock in the morning.”

It may come as a surprise to his high school cohort but Stephen has now turned teacher, offering pastry and bread classes to groups up to six in his bakery workroom, and planning future pizza classes by a wood-fired oven at home for larger numbers.

The classes run outside business hours on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings.

Flyers in store and posts on the Zest Pastries Facebook page announce upcoming classes, but groups also can call to book ahead when in the area.

The bread courses and pastry classes around the stainless-steel workbench take about six hours and are very hands-on.

“We all pick up rolling pins and we all rolls croissants and danish,” Stephen says as the tarts filled with custard or lemon curd take shape.

“And in the bread course, we all learn to mould bread by hand – there’s no machines. We mix the dough by hand and do

everything so you can take it home and use those skills.”

Adults and children are welcome for the six-hour instruction at a cost of $500 for a group of four and $100 for each extra person.

Everything you make, you take home.

Stephen is yet to work out the logistics of the pizza classes but, just like the bakery courses, they’re sure to be laid-back, with the opportunity for participants to bring a bottle of wine and enjoy the fruits of their labours in the backyard setting.

Making pizzas at home in the great outdoors is close to another of Stephen’s favourite pastimes: open-fire cooking.

“My true passion is cooking over open fire,” the father-ofthree enthuses.

“I’ve got spit roasters. I’ve got the wood oven. When SBS did that special on cooking with fire, I got so inspired. Cooking over open fire is my thing – camping, too.

“I do a lot of camp cooking. I cook up pretty amazing food just out in the middle of nowhere.

“Now I’ve got the oven at home … I do a pulled pork. It gets pickled with fennel, thyme and garlic and then I cook that at home inside a camp oven inside the wood oven for 12 hours (at only 90C degrees) and then we smash it at the end to get

crackling and that’s what we use in the sandwich (at Zest).

“It just melts in your mouth. You’ve got to use the pork belly because it’s a quite a tough piece of meat, so it likes the slow cooking.

“The chickens – like what we use for our chicken sandwiches – are cooked over an open fire on a rotisserie. So that gets done at home.

“I take my work home with me. I’m really bad.”

And that’s on top of a 10-hour day that starts in the wee hours of the morning, making the bread, pies, sourdough, tarts, croissants and danish pastries for that day’s customers.

Stephen admits he needs “a clone” of himself: someone who is also passionate about pastry and is a hard worker.

“Trying to find staff out here – that’s probably the biggest problem with living in the country,” he admits.

Instead, Stephen has decided to go it alone and has bought extra equipment to make life easier on himself.

He has named all his “helping hands”. There’s Stavros the oven (that took over from Sven), Cheryl the pastry sheeter (like a rolling pin with conveyor belts that moulds the pastry into sheets) and Tiffany the small mixer, to name a few.

Being part of the former Hyatt Regency Coolum kitchen team doing functions for up to 1200 people gave Stephen his tireless work ethic.

And that’s paying off as COVID-19 brings more domestic tourists to the Stanthorpe-Granite Belt wine region from areas such as the Gold and Sunshine coasts and Brisbane.

“Since the ‘corona’, people have realised it’s only a couple of hours’ drive,” Stephen says with a big smile.

“They (tourists) are all getting into it. It’s been really, really busy.”

Play centre has truly gone to the dogs

T

oys, colourful play equipment, snacks and comfy beds for nap time – it’s everything you’d expect to find in a daycare centre. But the only babies here are of the furbaby kind.

Tails wag madly as dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds have a ball.

When I arrive at Maroochydore’s Doggie Adventure Playhouse in Kayleigh Drive, Michelle and her young son Harvey are getting Sunny the poodle out of the car for his first ‘meet and greet’.

“I just think he needs something outside of home,” Michelle tells daycare owner Toni Pettigrew. “He just tries to push the boundaries a little bit and he’s so full of energy.

“Being a puppy he’s just into mischief at the moment. He loves toilet paper so he will get a roll of toilet paper and cover my apartment in toilet paper and there’s no catching him – he’s so agile.”

Toni says daycare can provide ‘better balanced’ dogs.

“One of the best things about socialisation with a dog is that they get rid of all that dog energy because they’re playing with other dogs and they just become better balanced because they know who they are and they know where they fit and then they’re way more chilled at home,” she says.

“They’re a lot easier to train as well. When they’ve got rid of all that high energy, they’re more focussed on you, and focussed on food. So the day after they come here is the best day to do training because they’re calmer.”

Toni, who opened the doggie playhouse in late 2018, says owners bring their dogs for a number of reasons.

“The dogs may be experiencing separation or anxiety issues and we have strategies to help desensitise them,” she says. “Other people don’t want to leave their dogs at home alone while they are at work.

“We offer structured play in a climate-controlled environment with three rooms for dogs of varying sizes.”

She says that during last year’s COVID lockdown, many people bought puppies for companionship and then, when they had to return to the office to work, found their pets struggled with the change.

brain games scheduled in the afternoon.

“The yards are fully supervised 100 per cent of the time,” Toni says.

“Any poor dog behaviour is quickly redirected so we basically distract them and divert them to a different direction so they learn that behaviour is not allowed.

"We gently redirect things like elevated play, humping and rough, rigorous play.

“So we’re very structured. We have our morning play zone between 8.30 and 10.30 with lots of ball games, tug-of-war and chasey to wear them out.

“Nap zone is between 11.30 and 1 so all the toys go away and the beds come out, then we have afternoon play zone. In the

Socialisation at doggie daycare creates more balanced dogs, according to owner Toni Pettigrew

afternoon it’s more brain games so we do a lot of training with them.”

George, an adorable big ginger ‘groodle’, barks to get Toni’s attention when he sees her through the window. She silently gives him a hand signal and he stops immediately.

“That’s our signal to stop barking,” she says, just in case I’d missed the effectiveness of her gesture.

George is brought to the front reception area to meet Sunny.

The two sniff to make each other’s acquaintance before George bounds back to play with his friends and no doubt share the news of the young new arrival.

Toni says there’s constant cleaning, just like a children’s daycare centre, but it’s more rigorous because ‘dogs play with their mouths’.

“We use vet-grade disinfectant and at the end of the day staff do a deep clean of all toys, play equipment and bedding, which takes about two hours.”

I wasn’t surprised to learn that Toni has a dog of her own,

plus another she takes care of on weekdays.

But I was surprised to hear that she left a successful job in IT to follow her passion, set up her own business and not spend hours commuting to Brisbane

as she had done for 17 years prior.

In just a couple of years she has amassed a database of hundreds of furry customers, with some booked in daily, weekly or sporadically – whenever their owners need a break.

“I’ve always loved animals so to be able to work with them every day is just so rewarding,” she says. “I have 14 staff and we are all fur aunts and uncles.”

King of the canines

A

s the owner of 13 border collies and a kelpie, John Borg needs to be good with dogs. Fortunately he’s better than good – and he’s making a successful living from it.

John runs Sheep Herding for City Dogs from his Peachester farm, teaching working dogs that live in suburbia how to tap into their instincts to achieve better control of their behaviour.

He also teaches people how to communicate with their dogs.

Born in the UK but a resident of Australia for 58 years, John has always had a connection with animals.

“The connection with animals for me is a very special bond that’s very hard to explain,” he says.

“The bond is both ways, from me to the animal and the animal to me. Many of my clients often are taken aback by their dog’s reaction to me.”

Sheep Herding for City Dogs started eight years ago and has gone from strength to strength.

“Where I used to do only Sunday mornings (it) has now become a seven days a week business training up to 200 dogs per week, all through word of mouth,” John says.

He says part of his skill with city dogs comes from learning to understand them.

“Remember, these are dogs that have never seen sheep before,” he says. “This is instinctive so even though they have never seen sheep before they know how to do this, it’s not taught like obedience. Playing with a tennis ball and frisbee is a taught thing – herding stock is instinctive and therefore not taught. I help bring this out and put commands to something that these dogs know how to do, thus gaining off-leash control of the dog.

“The other thing I do is teach people how to communicate with their dog. We currently communicate with dogs using human language, human instinct and human emotion. The issue is that the dog is not human, it’s a dog. I’ll be conversing with new clients on their arrival and I’ll tell them that while I’m talking to them I’m also having a conversation with the dog but in the dog’s language. I’ll explain what the dog and I had said to each other, I’ll turn and walk away and their dog will follow me, without me asking it to come with me as I’m the first human that’s ever spoken to the dog in dog language.

“Clients are just blown away by the massive change in their dog once they start communicating in dog ‘body language’.”

John says his interest in dog training evolved gradually, beginning when he got his border collie Bonnie.

“She was my first border collie, she’s just turned nine,” he says. “I knew border collies needed a lot of work or they could become troublesome. So I joined a dog obedience club and started training. Before I knew it we were competing in dog obedience trials. Our highest score was 99.

“I took to training like a duck to water but I’ve also had a way with animals all my life – some sort of energy connection; animals are just drawn to me.

“As time went on, I started competing in herding trials and did exceptionally well, winning the Australian National Kennel Council Queensland Championship in my first year with Bonnie.”

Later an opportunity arose For John to utilise a property with sheep where he could train his dogs. Other dog owners got in contact with him about training their animals and Sheep Herding for City Dogs was born. He trains working breeds only, so as to not provoke other dogs’ predatory instincts.

Has he had any dogs he couldn’t train?

“I’ve had the odd difficult dog but I’ve never found one that can’t be trained,” he says.

“I’ve come across maybe two dogs that had been a bit of an issue yet nothing that couldn’t be worked with. That’s what I love: dogs are so individual, just like people.

“Now on the other hand, people are way more difficult.

What I find is that these people aren’t open to other approaches to training a dog. My way is not by dominating a dog or by feeding it treats as a reward. I’ve a few fully certified dog trainers that come out here as students because as one of these trainers said to me ‘what you do and your approach is so radical’.”

For someone clearly so passionate about animals, John has just about his dream job.

“There are many things I enjoy about my job,” he says. “I’m outside enjoying the country air, the beautiful and picturesque surroundings, being with animals my entire waking day. But most of all I love seeing working city dogs realise their instinct.

John has a way with dogs that commands their attention

You can see the physical change in the dogs’ facial expression when the light comes on. In turn my clients’ faces beam when they see their city dog suddenly come alive and instinctively balances to me. I really enjoy working with animals and people – it’s very rewarding.”

John says he has plans to improve the business down the track.

“We plan to make the training yards all undercover so regardless of weather we can still train, as we are at the mercy of the weather at present,” he says. “We also plan to have a hydro bath available for clients to bathe their dogs if they wish.

Eventually we also want to offer dog obedience, tracking and nosework courses. Long-term a boarding kennel as well. Once we manage to get the farm looking as we’d like, I’ll be able to get back to competing in sheepdog trials.”

John and his dogs were recently featured on Channel Nine TV series My Way, with a film crew spending a day filming a

training day with regular and new clients.

“I find the popularity a bit overwhelming at times, so I’m sure I’ll be buried under an avalanche of inquiries after this,” he says. “All my business is purely through word of mouth. Many new clients tell me that I’ve been highly recommended to them, or they tell me that everyone is talking about you as a dog whisperer and that you change dogs instantly. I’ve many clients that come from interstate or travel hours through to get here.”

Despite the added exposure, John remains as humble and passionate about dog training as ever.

“I’m just an average bloke doing something I love,” he says.

“This was a hobby and something I could do with a dog that I love very much, yet it’s grown beyond all proportions and still growing at a much-accelerated rate. I’m not a dog whisperer as many people say I am, I’m just a guy that has always loved animals and enjoys being around them, that’s all.”

D

o you select dessert first and then decide on an entree and main to match when dining out?

I must admit it’s a habit of mine – good or bad – but I have a serious sweet tooth. So when it came to tastings at the cellar door of Flame Hill Vineyard at Montville, I went straight to the fortifieds.

I watched as the golden-hued liquid spilled into the glass, swirled it around to watch the legs form and threw my nose in to draw up the incredible rich aromas.

Without taking a sip, my senses were transported into sugary dessert heaven. The tasting notes mentioned Christmas cake and a butterscotch bouquet. I could smell honey and all the dried fruits from their Christmas cake reference, such as citrus peel, raisins, sultanas and dried apricots.

But, I did not take a sip, for this was a flavour to work up to.

A light at the end of the tunnel. My wine nirvana.

So I politely tasted the crisp pinot gris, with its sharp nose of stonefruit and a palate of citrus, spice and all things pleasant; then on to something a little bit different: the fiano.

This southern European grape is apparently flourishing in the traprock and granitic geology of Flame Hill’s Kurrajong vineyard, loving the cooler surrounds of the Granite Belt. There was cider, marmalade and elderflower at first sniff and the slap-youaround-the-face flavour of preserved lemon, tingling acidity and a lingering savoury sensation.

Next, please.

The Montville verdelho was less of a shock on my tastebuds, then I switched to reds with the barbera, which was, according to the tasting notes, a black mulberry conspiracy of glazed cherry, exotic spice and dried strawberry ... bursting with personality, great length, bright sweet fruit with fresh sage and rosemary peering through. It delivered on its promises.

Now I come back to the glass that was poured first. The muscat. Music in a bottle. Hark the herald angels sing …

The taste is as good as the promise and it lingers deliciously on the tongue and in the throat. I decide then and there to take home a bottle to make my dessert dream a reality.

Andy Williams, I applaud you. Andy leads the winemaking team at Flame Hill and is a born and bred local who controls all viticulture at both the Montville and Granite Belt vineyards.

Next time you’re taking a drive into the hinterland, I highly recommend stopping in for a tasting, or for lunch on the deck or terrace, which is open Thursday-Monday from 11.30am-3pm.

here is nothing quite like a beer festival. I’m not talking about the beer halls in Munich for Oktoberfest (mainly because I haven’t been yet, but it is on my bucket list), I’m talking about the modern-day beer festival with live music, food trucks and tasting paddles of beer from breweries across the country.

There is something that still excites me when I walk up to the stalls and have a chat to the brewers about their latest seasonal beer, their biggest seller or just to hear a little more about their story. Then I grab a beer, take a stroll to another brewery stall and repeat.

If you’re a newbie to the beer festival scene, think of it as an opportunity to find out what other breweries are doing, maybe find your favourite (or least favourite) beer, and at the same time have an awesome day out with your mates.

The Sunshine Coast has plenty of opportunities for you to pop your beer festival cherry. Just around the corner is the Hops and Horses Twilight Races event on April 30 at the Caloundra racetrack, featuring a range of local breweries. From the May 28-30, the Sunshine Coast Craft Beer and Cider Festival sets up for its third year in its new home at Night Quarter. It will feature not just locals but some pretty awesome breweries from all over the country.

The Hinterland Craft Beer Festival is also back again for

another year on June 26. This free event is held at the Imperial Hotel, which is also the home for Eumundi Brewery and always has a super-chilled vibe as you would expect in Eumundi.

The crew at Land and Sea Brewery also hold an annual beer event, and last year in November they showcased Australian and New Zealand breweries with an exceptional tap takeover-style event called the Explorers Beer Festival. Keep an eye out for this year’s event as these guys also have a distillery on site – did someone say gin festival?

Looking to travel further afield to get your beer on? Well then get down to Brisbane for GABS (the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular) on Saturday, June 12. These guys are the big daddies of the beer festival scene and put on an amazing event not to be missed.

When the international borders open, I will be straight on the plane to Wellington for what is my number one beer festival: Beervana. This is the holy grail of beer festivals (in the southern hemisphere at least) and is held over two days in August. It features more than 60 breweries from around the world, all housed in Sky Stadium (known locally as the ‘cake tin’).

Bonus points that the beer legends from the Garage Project are also based in Wellington, along with a heap of other incredible breweries you can visit while in town.

And when the rest of the world opens up ... yep, you will see me making the pilgrimage to Munich for the original beer festival Oktoberfest. Prost!

SUBURB PROFILE: BLI BLI

S

Family favourite right by the river

prawling away to the west of the Maroochy River, Bli Bli has become one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular family suburbs.

Situated roughly halfway between the Bruce and Sunshine motorways, and with easy access to Maroochydore, Nambour and the rest of the Coast, convenience is one of the suburb’s great drawcards.

The area is culturally significant to First Nations people, and what is now the popular Muller Park was once a gathering space for the Kabi Kabi people. A shell midden and associated artefacts have been found at the park, which has signage noting their importance.

The area became used for farming, particularly sugarcane, and the completion of the David Low Bridge in 1959 further connected Bli Bli to the rest of the Coast. In recent years the area has seen enormous growth through large-scale housing developments, including retirement living.

Picnic tables in The suburb is home to two Parklakes schools: Bli Bli State School (Prep to Year 6), which opened in 1901; and Good Samaritan Catholic College, which opened in 2019 and will eventually cater for Prep to Year 12.

Bli Bli has its fair share of attractions, with the iconic Sunshine Castle being built in 1972. It is also home to the Bli Bli Watersports Complex, featuring wakeboarding, David Low Bridge over an inflatables aqua park and barra the Maroochy River fishing; and the Maroochy River Golf Club, rated among the top 100 courses in Australia. There’s also the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary and its winding boardwalks, and in cooler months McMartins Strawberry Farm is a great place for a delicious fruit treat (or ice-cream).

The suburb is well serviced by shops, with Bli Bli Village featuring an array of stores including a White’s Supa IGA, cafes and more in a stunning setting near the river. And further down David Low Way is the popular Erbachers fruit and veg store and Waterfront Hotel.

The Probus Club of Caloundra 86 enjoys many different activities throughout the month, with an emphasis on fun and friendship.

A monthly general meeting is held in Caloundra on the third Tuesday of the month.

Australia's first underground automated waste collection system in the new Maroochydore city centre is moving closer to being switched on.

The technical experts required to commission the facility are in the country and out of quarantine, with Sunshine Coast Council excited to reach the commissioning phase of the project.

“COVID-19 delayed our commissioning schedule but the technical experts are checking the systems now, and we expect it to be operational mid-year,” council’s group executive customer engagement and planning services James Ruprai said.

“The Sunshine Coast is leading the nation with this sustainable and innovative technology.”

Thirty years of surf

Eighty-nine Rural Fire Service volunteers have been recognised for their service at a ceremony at Yandina.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton (pictured left with some of the recipients), representing Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan, said the volunteers received medals that acknowledged their long-standing commitment to ethical standards, diligence and integrity.

“Regional communities rely on the courage and expertise of RFS volunteers to keep them safe during emergencies,” he said.

“Collectively, these volunteers have amassed an incredible 1400 years of service. Some of these volunteers have individually given 50 years of dedicated service to their communities.”

The Sunshine Coast Stamp Club has recommenced its meetings in 2021, with a change from evening to daytime meetings.

The club now meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 1-4pm at the Red Cross Rooms, 21 Price St, Nambour.

Club activities each month include viewing exchange books, buying and selling stamps, a monthly quiz, show and tell, and more.

The Noosa Festival of Surfing returns in May, and this year it is celebrating 30 years.

Usually held in early March, this year the festival will be held from May 15-23.

More than 300 competitors have already signed up, competing across 11 age divisions, six open divisions, the team challenge, family challenge and SUPs – plus the famed dog surfing championships.

“It’s obvious people are looking forward to this event perhaps more than ever before,” co-event organiser Josh Allen says.

The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild is holding a woodcraft sales day on May 2.

Members will be showcasing and selling a large array of handcrafted timber items, as well as timber slabs and turning blanks.

The Woodies source their timber sustainably and locally.

Trees felled by storms or property owners are collected and milled by the Woodies and made available to members.

The event will be at 230-238 Balmoral Rd, Montville (next to the Montville Sports Ground), from 8am-3pm. Entry is free.

The Buderim Garden Club is celebrating its 75th year in 2021.

The club is planning celebrations from October 15-17 including a plant market, flower show and photographic display, open gardens and garden sculpture exhibition.

The club was founded in 1946 and is the equal sixth oldest horticultural club in the state. As of September it had 278 members.

Over the years members have planted trees along King, Main and Burnett streets, and built the original gardens at the intersection of Lindsay Rd and Main St. Members look after gardens around Buderim Memorial Hall and the Old Post Office Information Centre.

An associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Tropical Forests and People Research Centre has written a book on the vegetation of Fraser Island.

Grahame Applegate’s book Vegetation of Fraser Island/K'gari lists the 850-plus plants on the island and identifies the links between the vegetation types. It also includes a self-guided vegetation discovery tour that covers 10 locations in the middle section of the island.

The Buderim resident has long held a desire to publish his work on the island and share his fascination with the sand formations and vegetation to a wider audience.

After a recent talk from Rebecca Ind from Lifeblood Maroochydore, the members of Maroochydore VIEW Club were inspired to become a Lifeblood team, with Di Herd (pictured) becoming the first donor.

Boyle family has long links to region HISTORY

T

he Boyle name is synonymous with Nambour. The family and descendants have lived in the area since Nicholas and Maria Boyle and their large family – including baby Bernard, who was just eight weeks old – moved to the area in 1920. Many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other descendants still live in the area and are involved in local businesses.

Nicholas Augustus Boyle married Maria Litherland in Lismore in August 1899. Bernard (Bernie) was the second youngest of a family of 11 children, all of whom were born in northern New South Wales, except the youngest Veronica, who was born in Nambour. The other children were Ellen Sarah, Edward Charles, Samuel William Kevin, Charles Robert, Nicholas Augustus James, Sarah Emily Eliza, Mary Kathleen, Henry Bernard and Hughie Archie Leonard.

The original blocks of land owned by Nicholas were between what is now Petrie Creek Rd and Petrie Creek. The original name of the road was One Chain Rd. Part of the land was already cleared, with the rest done by hand by the older sons using a tree puller. The land was cultivated using draught horses in preparation for growing sugar cane. Kerosene tractors were later used.

Bernard lived in the Nambour area for most of his life, growing up on the farm and reluctantly attending the Rosemount School. One of his chores on the farm involved milking the house cow, separating the milk and feeding the calves.

At 15, Bernard was suffering from a stomach upset but home remedies did not relieve the symptoms. He was taken to the doctor, who diagnosed appendicitis, but the regular doctor was not there to operate. He was put in plaster, which was boiling hot and went around the middle of the torso. He could have nothing to eat for two weeks and was only allowed to have sips of water supplemented with an egg flip or soup at night.

inflammation, then sent home for three weeks. After this time he returned to hospital to have an appendectomy and was in hospital for another three weeks, after which he went home to recuperate.

Bernard enlisted in January 1939 in the Citizen Military Force in Nambour. He was a private in the ninth 49th Brigade and was transferred to the Regular Reserve Militia Force, C Company, at Nambour in June 1940. Two incidents of absence without leave occurred in February 1941 at Chermside, and then again in November 1942 while posted in Townsville. Apparently, Bernard and his cousin Bernard Hegarty (9th Battalion) decided to go fishing while in Townsville. On return to camp they found their unit had left for overseas. On each occasion Bernard was fined for the number of days absent.

Eventually Bernard enlisted in the Australian Infantry Force and embarked on the Queen Mary troop ship to New Guinea, where he served at Milne Bay. He later moved from Milne Bay to Port Moresby and then to the Owen Stanley Ranges. This was after the Kokoda Trail battles. He was discharged in February 1944 on compassionate grounds, and gained the Returned from Active Service Badge.

Battalion and became a prisoner of war in Changi and sent to the Burma railway before being discharged in 1945; and Hugh, who was killed by sniper fire two weeks before the end of the war on the in July 1945 at Tarakan, Borneo. He is buried in the Labuan War Cemetery in Malaysia.

It was a difficult time for Maria, as her husband Nicholas had died in December 1940. At least some of her sons remained to help on the farm.

After the war Bernard and his brother Samuel bought the neighbouring farm and also grew sugar cane, but it wasn’t large enough to support both families from sugar alone. So the brothers decided to diversify, with Bernard growing firstly pineapples then tomatoes, strawberries and later beans, while Samuel grew peas. Bernard kept hounds to keep the wallabies away.

Bernard first appears on the electoral rolls in 1943. His wife Elizabeth (Betty) Josephine Hogue first appears in 1949, as they had married in February 1947 in Nambour. They had three children: David Bernard, Kathryn Mary and Elizabeth, who were all born in Nambour and grew up on the Petrie Creek farm.

Betty was a craftswoman who enjoyed basketry, toy construction and machine knitting. She was also a great cook and enjoyed icing wedding cakes.

The farm was sold in the early 1970s and Bernard and Betty purchased a four-wheel-drive and caravan, travelling throughout Queensland, before eventually retiring to Coolum.

Bernard died in 2005, while Betty is living in an aged care facility in Cairns near her daughter.

Bernard’s son David has this memory of his father, which he shared at his funeral: “My enduring memories of my father Bernie are of a simple and humble man – a man of great integrity and honesty, generous to a fault and having great compassion for his fellow man. He had an enduring interest in sport. His greatest love was for surf fishing for tailor and bream.”

Support helps Sophia set social goals B

efore accessing support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Sophia Savage would hide in the house, refuse to go out in the community and was afraid of animals and pets.

But since utilising NDIS support in 2019, the 17-yearold from the Sunshine Coast has improved her speech, communication and social skills to the point where she is now aiming to go out with friends on school holidays and weekends.

Her mum Khanh says Sophia – who has an intellectual disability – has received the support necessary to help her thrive.

“Sophia is now gaining her confidence to join in the community – she talks more to express her feelings (and) can walk past dogs now without jumping, screaming or running away,” she says.

“Sophia is now supported in her goal to improve her speech and communication skills so she can interact with family, friends and the community effectively, to continue to build social and community activity participation (and) help Sophia to build her daily living skills in the community.”

Khanh says that before accessing the NDIS she was concerned about how her family was going to fund supports for Sophia.

“We love our daughter and did worry how we could find money to pay for all her therapy, and also how we could support her when she finishes school this year,” she says.

“We can relax now about Sophia’s future and how she is being supported by the NDIS.” Sophia attends physiotherapy to improve her motor skills, speech therapy to progress her verbal communication, occupation therapy and psychology.

The speech therapy is also helping Sophia to effectively use her Proloquo2Go app to best express her feelings.

Khanh says Sophia is now doing more activities outside and is accessing a support worker to attend a local service

“She loves it and is more confident,” she says. “She likes to go out more and is now not shy to see people around.”

Sophia received assistance to apply for and implement her NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Co-ordination Partner in the Community Program for the Maroochydore region.

Khanh says local area co-ordinator Shannon assisted her

to use her NDIS funds appropriately to get the most benefit for Sophia.

“Shannon always answers my questions in a short time and encourages me to communicate with her whenever I need help with the NDIS,” she says. “I always feel a warm welcome from our LAC.”

Author’s debut reaches Hollywood

A

novel by Sunny Coast writer Dacre Danes has been picked up by a Hollywood producer and is being turned into a screenplay.

Danyon was inspired by Dacre’s experiences as a victim of bullying and delivers a profound message of hope.

The author – who was featured in the October edition of the Sunny Coast Times – now uses his experiences in an ambassador role for anti-bullying organisations, and has also started his own podcast based around the issue.

The Shelly Beach resident says he’s thrilled at the prospect of his debut novel being given the Hollywood treatment.

“We are currently in the screenplay-writing stage, which is a big break for an indie author, and book sales are through the roof,” he says.

“The screenplay will be auctioned in July among the likes of Fox Searchlight, New Line Cinema and highend streamers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Apple. I am working very closely with the producer and screenwriter, and will be going over there during filming to be a consulting producer.

“This book is about hope and ending the stigma of bullying, which can then lead to suicide.”

Dacre’s podcast is called Bullrush and is about “hope and change, and the challenges we currently face with bullying, mental health and – more importantly – suicide prevention”.

“I am interviewing fellow ambassador Libby Trickett and the CEO of the National Suicide Prevention

Commission, Christine Morgan, in the next few weeks, plus a lot of other celebs are lining up to talk,” he says.

“I would like to reach out to any parent or teenager above 16 who can come on the show and talk for half an hour if they are going though bullying in the workplace or at school, or any educators who would like to reach out and discuss bullying. Please reach out – they can remain anonymous, but it’s these discussions that help find hope to these issues.”

The novel was a labour of love for Dacre, saying it took five years to write because bullying is such a heavy topic.

“The book is a mixture of my experiences plus other people’s experiences,” he says. “It’s all inspired by true events but it is definitely fiction, it’s not a memoir.”

Set in 2005, the story centres on Danyon Harp, who lives in the fictional town of Silver Beach, which Dacre describes as “any Australian coastal town”.

“Danyon is a young guy of 20 and he is a pro surfer. He starts blacking out and he’s saved on the beach by someone who’s bullied him his entire life,” he says. “There’s themes in there about suicide and bullying, but Danyon’s a great character and he really speaks for a lot of the people out there that are suffering.”

Walk on the wild side

A

n ice-cream shop is not where you’d usually expect a creative partnership to be formed, but it has proved a sweet surprise for emerging artists Ketakii Jewson-Brown and Laura Vecmane.

The pair are preparing to unveil their collaborative exhibition Let’s Play Wild at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre in May. It explores the themes of wildness and playfulness in their many facets; the diverse roles of the feminine, the surrounding environment and the sensual experiences of daily life.

Ketakii says the exhibition, which includes painting, photography, the moving image and sculpture, was inspired by her and Laura’s shared life experiences.

“The idea evolved from some of our many conversations and musings on life as women, as mothers, as creatives,” she says. “We both felt to explore the notion that no matter how domestic one’s life becomes, that the wildness and playfulness remains, simply awaiting reigniting.”

Laura adds: “Beauty in all its forms is very important in my work, and so is colour. This exhibition will have a selection of works with themes holding meaning to us at this point of life.

“I was inspired by my inner calling to embrace my freedom of expression and explore many roles and senses of day-to-day life as well as wildlife and nature around me.”

So how did that fateful meeting between the duo happen?

“Laura and I met at the ice-cream shop in Maleny, back when it was still called Colin James,” Ketakii says. “We would see each other there with our partners and children and smile at one another, perhaps acknowledging our similar situations. One day we started talking and the topic of creativity must have come up and the rest is history.

Ketakii completed her Diploma in Applied Photo Imaging at Sunshine Coast TAFE in 2013. She has been a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize, National Youth Self Portrait Prize and Melt Portrait Prize, and a semi-finalist in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. She says she’s primarily a visual artist in photography and collage, and sometimes dapples with the moving image and projection.

Laura, meanwhile, brings a more international flavour to her work.

“I come from Latvia, where my art studies began, but have been studying art in Spain and Denmark since and have absorbed art influences from other European countries,” she says. “I have master's degrees in fine arts and have participated in a number of group exhibitions as well as few solo exhibitions as an emerging artist.”

Ketakii says she hopes her art will make people stop and think.

“My ambitions as an artist are first and foremost to get people to question: themselves, their biases, the status quo, why something is the way it is and why we think it is good, bad, right, wrong,” Ketakii says. “Then my ambition as an artist is to build a profile that gets noticed in order for me to get my art in front of larger groups of people and more diverse audiences. I would love to be in a position to make art that can really help people – a reminder of the uniqueness we each contain and the beauty and magic in that uniqueness.”

Laura says she loves to depict the beauty of nature, including people and their day-to-day life, but also has more tangible ambitions as an artist.

“I also would like to break the spell that most of the artists live with, that artists must always be poor,” she says. “I would like to be a thriving artist, not starving!”

Let’s Play Wild was made possible by the Federal Government’s Regional Arts Fund, Sunshine Coast Council and the Regional Arts Development Fund. It is at the Butter Factory from May 7-June 13.

Joshua's soulful sounds fit the bill H gigs.

e might be a world-class performer and composer, but jazz musician Joshua Hatcher is just happy to be back doing

On May 9 Joshua will be bringing his quintet School of Hard Bops to the Jazz Sessions, hosted by the Glass House Brewery at Forest Glen.

He says jazz is the perfect soundtrack to the current global situation.

“It has been so beautiful seeing people respond to this sort of music after all us musicians had to take time off from performing last year due to COVID,” he says. “It’s soulful and has the feeling of the blues. It seems right for this turbulent moment in history.

“Each time we do this show, I have people coming and thanking us for playing this music.

I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the Sunshine Coast.”

The band specialises in Blue Note hip and its repertoire pays tribute to the great ’50s and ’60s hard bop bands of Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Dorham.

“Hard bop represented a movement in jazz to reconnect with a steadier groove after the intellectual leanings of bebop that preceded it,” Joshua says. “The style draws on the musical feeling of rhythm ’n’ blues and gospel music, and has really broad appeal

because it just feels so good. It’s a great introduction to jazz music if you haven’t been to a jazz gig before.

“Much of this music is really synonymous with the label, Blue Note Records. The thing about Blue Note is that they were one of the few labels that paid the musicians to rehearse before recording sessions, so the performances on record are very slick.”

A School of Hard Bops show focuses on tightly performed instrumental arrangements featuring Joshua on tenor saxophone, Shannon Marshall on trumpet, Damian Sim on piano, Helen Russell on double bass and Aaron Jansz on drums.

“Helen and Shannon are going to sing a few tunes too,” Joshua says.

“I really enjoy that we can showcase the talents of each member of the band at different times to present all sorts of good-time music. A quintet is a very flexible line-up. We can cover everything from a very intimate duet all the way to stuff that feels like a big band.”

The last two performances by School of Hard Bops at the Brisbane Jazz Club have sold out and received rave reviews.

Theatregoers will have a chance to see two new one-act plays

by Nambour author Joy Hinckley at Maleny and Buderim. Legacy and Holding the Centre are short comedy/dramas with social relevance, exploring the issues affecting some of the vulnerable people in our community.

Legacy shows how an elderly man forwards on lessons from his childhood to his young carer, while Holding the Centre takes us to a small community centre where the two-woman staff battles with and occasionally against each other to keep things together.

The Buderim Craft Cottage has a heritage firmly planted in local regional culture and its members work with time-honoured techniques alongside newer contemporary methods.

Within this creative community, the Mixed Media Group is comprised of established and emerging artists who are committed to exploring new ideas and pushing the boundaries on what’s possible. They are delighted to present their annual Mixed Media Exhibition, to be held in the centre’s independent gallery.

Live music has returned to the new Maroochydore CBD, with the relaunch of the weekly StrEATside Market.

Held at The MET, the market has new opening hours of 3-9pm Saturdays. It opened to large crowds in August last year before taking a summer break in December.

“Live music will continue to be an integral part of the day,” StrEATside operator Andrew Sisley says.

Steps have been taken to reduce the market’s environmental footprint by providing beverages from a range of companies with strong sustainability credentials.

“The market will also feature Shoppe Lightly, a new pop-up ethical store,” Andrew says.

Entry will continue to be free most weekends and StrEATside will provide umbrellas, picnic rugs and lawn games.

Author Allison Paterson has released the latest title in her Australia Remembers series for children, called Australia Remembers 2: Customs and Traditions of the Australian Defence Force.

It is the second book in the Peregian Springs-based writer’s series that focuses on Australian military history, specifically written for children aged 6-12.

“I worked as a teacher-librarian for over 20 years,” she says. ““There was a lack of information for students regarding war memorials, especially local ones. I wanted to provide a useful and curriculum-specific book that would add to the available resources, one that would be valued by both teachers and children.”

The first book in the series, Australian Remembers: Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and War Memorials, was released by Big Sky Publishing in 2018.

Allison received recognition from the Australian Book Industry Awards and Children's Book Council of Australia for the 2016 title Anzac Sons: Five Brothers on the Western Front, the children’s version of her adult non-fiction title Anzac Sons: The Story of Five Brothers in the War to End All Wars.

The Independent Theatre Inc, aka The Indee, has been reinvented as a ‘visiting theatre’ concentrating on staging its comedies in various Sunshine Coast retirement villages.

While The Indee does have young players, its mainstream comprises mature-age senior actors with a wealth of experience.

Many of them have been acting since their pre-teens and most have appeared in Indee productions over the past three decades, as well as with other Coast community theatres.

Performances have been scheduled for the first half of this year at IRT, Meridan Plains; Bellflower Retirement Resort, Sippy Downs; Hibiscus, Chancellor Park; Allora Gardens, Maroochydore; and Peregian Springs Country Club, with some return bookings already locked in.

Indee vice-president Carol Burls says each program consists of two one-act comedies with a duration each of between 35 and 50 minutes. The comedies are mostly multi-award-winners from The Indee catalogue and are proven laugh vehicles.

Five-time ARIA award-winner Katie Noonan will take the stage with her son Dexter as part of the Katie Noonan Trio at the Imperial Hotel on April 24.

Dexter, 15, will play drums alongside his mum and bassist and producer Steele Chabau.

Over the past five years, since releasing her all-originals crowd-funded and critically acclaimed album Transmutant, Katie has been building up a new body of work for her next album and alongside Steele and Dexter, they will be presenting the first live iterations of these new tunes.

Katie has proven herself as one of Australia’s most hardworking, versatile and prolific artists, producing 20 studio albums throughout her career. She has the rare ability to flourish in any genre, whether it’s gentle folk or a grand operatic performance.

Dexter's other band, the Feral Cats of Tokyo (all alumni of Katie’s Eumundi School of Rock), will be the support act.

Writers Marg Gibbs and Jenny Catalano have released their poetry anthology Kingdom of Rooms.

Readers are taken on a journey to explore nine royal rooms to discover what the king and queen keep hidden. The unique book explores collections including shields, helmets and jewels.

A collector at heart, Marg enjoys a treasure hunt herself and has cleverly put together a variety of reading for children ages four and up. The Mapleton resident is an experienced writer, poet, blogger and former teacher.

Meanwhile, it is the first published work for Jenny, from Diddillibah.

Roots singer Karl S. Williams is teaming up with Sunny Coast local Andrea Kirwin for a run of gigs in May. Northern New South Wales native Karl (pictured) performs a kind of folk, soul and blues, but not as you know it. With a weaponised voice that can soar, moan and ache with the best of them, he writes timeless music, rooted in tradition but also firmly conversant with the present.

Andrea is an Australian-Fijian artist and producer with a warm stage presence, retro soulful sound and a knack for storytelling. She has been steadily building a national following since the release of her first album From the Ground Up in 2013.

She writes and arranges her songs by weaving melodies and lyrics together with purpose and passion.

The duo will play at The Met in Maroochydore on May 13, Eudlo Hall on May 14, Spray of the Coral Coast in Mooloolaba on May 15 and the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre on May 16.

While Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is best known for his radio and television work (and his quirky personality), he also has degrees in physics and maths, biomedical engineering, medicine and surgery. He has worked as a physicist, tutor, filmmaker, car mechanic, labourer and doctor at a children’s hospital in Sydney.

He has written 45 books so far, beginning with Great Moments In Science in 1984, and including such titles as It Ain’t Necessarily So … Bro (2006), which was launched, quite literally, via rocket at Bondi Beach.

His curiosity and ability to communicate about science are infectious and he is coming to Maleny for a conversation with Steven Lang about things scientific but, with luck, also touching on things personal.

Introducing author Russell McGregor will also be talking about his biography of the remarkable Alec Chisholm.

Evoking visions of Parisian laneways, South American sensuality and the unbridled joy of European folk music, Brisbane-based quartet Estampa delivers an energetic, internationally inspired performance.

Musician Jeff Lang will perform at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel on May 1 for special night combining his songs with conversation and a Q&A session.

Jeff has built a reputation for making music that is accomplished, intricate, gutsy, melodic and loaded with soul, creating a stylistically diverse catalogue of more than 30 albums.

Then in 2019, he sat down and began to write what would become his first book, called Some Memories Never Die, a memoir of three decades on the road.

Celebrate 50 years of rock supergroup Queen with a tribute show at The Events Centre in Caloundra on April 24.

The show with feature 2011 Australia's Got Talent contestant Thomas Crane with his band Bohemian Rhapsody.

Queen is among the greatest rock bands of all time and Freddie Mercury is hailed by many as the most charismatic and flamboyant frontman in contemporary rock.

Fans will be well aware that a huge part of the live experience was their stage presence, flamboyance, theatrics and energy, which Crane delivers in spades.

Terra Nova is a powerful play by Academy Award-winning writer Ted Tally. Set in 1911, it follows the expedition of Royal Navy Captain Robert Scott and his team of Englishmen to the South Pole.

A journey that would have been challenging under any circumstances was made more so by Scott’s rivalry with Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was equally determined to be first to the pole.

After his death, Scott was feted as a hero, but questions were later raised about his competence and decision making.

Directed by Glenda Campi, Terra Nova is based on journals and letters found on his body.

Enjoy the smooth sounds of Mark Porter playing his tunes influenced by the music of America’s Deep South at the Tewantin Noosa RSL on May 9.

Mark, a blues musician from near Cooroy, released his latest album Blues Road last year, featuring Tim Gaze and Doc Span.

“It's an acoustic blues album with some folk influence consisting of 10 originals,” he told the Sunny Coast Times last year. “Most of the songs are about places that I've been to and people that I've met on tour, here and overseas.”

The third-generation muso plays acoustic and on Dobro guitars, backed by a stomp box. His influences range from Robert Johnson to Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

He has performed at festivals including the Gympie Music Muster, Agnes Blues Roots and Rock Festival, Rotorua Blues Festival, Tasmania’s Festival of King Island and more.

Design flaw The Morrison Government has ended the JobKeeper program, which was intended to keep people employed and connected to their place of work. It has been reported that around one-fifth of the money went to public companies whose revenue increased; that is $15 billion to $20 billion into the coffers of businesses that did not need it to survive the pandemic.

A design flaw by the government did not stipulate that any money, not needed by businesses to prosper and keep all their staff, should be returned to the Treasury.

Just think what the government could have done with that revenue as our national debt increases. It would be enough to extend JobKeeper to support one million workers for another six months; or perhaps a dozen new hospitals or some new schools; or even purpose-built quarantine centres; or bring home Australians stranded overseas by the pandemic.

JobKeeper was deemed necessary because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is not over yet. Until we are all vaccinated and lockdowns a thing of the past, we still need to support our businesses and their workforce.

The coming weeks will reveal whether some of our vulnerable companies cope and whether unemployment rises.

The Coalition government reckons it is a better economic manager, so why is it allowing public companies to boost their profits and keep up to $20 billion of taxpayers’ money?

Toad school I read the article ‘The good, bad and plain ugly’ article by Vic Jakes in February’s Sunny Coast Times. I enjoyed the article as it gave a good comparison and information between our native green tree frog and the introduced cane toad species.

I felt compelled, however, to send a comment to you in regard to the last line stating: "So, enjoy the 'goodie' and put up with the 'baddie'. After all, we have no other choice."

Readers do actually have a choice to act and make a

difference to this ‘good versus bad’ amphibian man-made crisis, by supporting the native green tree frog and euthanising the cane toad.

I have been euthanising cane toads for over a year since moving to Noosa. Most nights I have been catching cane toads and making fine compost.

When I first moved to Noosa I would go out at dusk and find 10 to 15 cane toads on the front lawn. After over a year of catching cane toads, I now find only one to three of them in the yard. I have also seen an increase in green tree frogs.

The RSPCA on its website provides a humane way to euthanise the cane toad.

Also, online videos provide information on how to catch cane toad tadpoles.

We all have a responsibility to play our part in supporting native species. It is not enough to sit back and let someone else deal with the problem and leave nature (in the form of the torresian crow) to fix the problem.

Relentless growth My wife and I chose to come up here 13 years ago, in preference to the Gold Coast, because of the horrendous development down there, with its population pressures and environmental destruction. That seems to have been the motivation for lots of other Sunny Coasters.

But in our brief time here, we’ve seen a relentless growth in house numbers and new developments, with corresponding decline in natural habitats and worsening traffic.

It won’t be long before our infrastructure won’t be able to cope (some say that’s already the case), and our problems might actually surpass the Gold Coast’s.

While Jessica Lawrence (March SCT) complains of a ‘housing crisis’, we feel the real issue is a population crisis.

Change land rules Last month Jessica Lawrence (March SCT) wrote about the housing crisis in this area and I also find it hard to fathom that the council seems content to keep developing, incessantly, often in flood plains and ruining natural habitats, and where the town infrastructure and services cannot keep up. (Palmwoods is a prime example.) The whole thing is about money, and people are suffering because of it.

On that note – why are people not able to build a second or third dwelling for their family on their land? (Unless it is ridiculously close to the main house, meaning no privacy.) There are plenty of families who have land, but little space in their actual home, and so their children (and sometimes their own young families) are having to leave and become part of the housing problem.

I understand that letting people build tons of homes on their land could lead down a messy path – but could it not be done via land size? For example, if someone has three acres, could they build a two-bed home on each acre? Not everyone will do it, or want to do it, but it could help those that can.

I do not look behind to see the footprints someone else will find but let the wind fill my hair and scan the beach ahead where life’s daily dreams are etched upon the sand.

The laughing trail of children darting to the sea, the toddler’s halting steps and the wafty, dreamy saunter of lovers filtering through the fitness-conscious joggers furrowed stride, skirt the water’s edge as if to dare the waves to stealthily remove the secrets of their tread.

ith all the ‘must dos’ and ‘have tos’ we do each day, it’s a great idea to simplify to amplify our life. There are some specific but easy things we can do that aid this thought. We often overcrowd our life with things that can easily be eliminated, turned down or simplified that make an enormous difference to the quality of our life.

Here are some on my list to help get you started on your own: • Unsubscribe to any email subscriptions that don’t resonate with you.

• Do the same and unfollow people on your social media.

• Turn off all social media notifications and only look at them once a day.

• Keep a simple, healthy meal routine and learn at least five nutritious meals that you can rotate through the week. Batch and freeze them. This is a great time-saving activity.

• Get more organised by using one handbag unless a special event, and keep your wardrobe, pantry and fridge uncluttered.

• Create a top three to-do list each day and write down tomorrow’s list that night.

• Mediate or pray for 20-30 minutes a day.

• Read 10 pages of a book every day.

• Get seven to nine hours’ sleep a night and keep your morning routine as simple as possible, including a regular breakfast. Set your workout wear the night before.

• Journal about three things you’re grateful for every day.

Continue to add to your simplifying list and go deeper by eliminating or limiting relationships and commitments that aren’t good for you. Learning to say ‘no’ is vital if we want to amplify our life.

Prepare pets for cooler weather

hat a welcome start we have had to autumn, with loads of rain and a gradual drop in our daytime temperatures. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that our pets feel the change in weather too.

Here are some tips to help get your pets ready for the cooler months: • Always provide bedding in an area that is warm, dry and off the ground or well padded, to prevent chills from cold floors.

• Place a bed in a sunny spot so they can warm up in the morning or afternoon sun if they want to.

• If you have older pets, or with little or no fur coat, start to get out their winter clothes.

• If your pet doesn’t already sleep inside with you, consider letting them inside on the cold and rainy nights, even if its just in the laundry.

• Keep walking your dog. Even though it’s getting darker earlier and the sun is coming up later, don’t let your pet miss out on one of the joys of their day.

It’s also a good time to remember that our pets find many things around the house toxic. Being aware of what is not good for your pets will help avoid expensive trips to the vet.

Here’s our quick list: • Human medications such as vitamins and pain relievers.

• Foods such as grapes, raisins, onions and chocolate.

• Some plants, especially succulents and lilies for cats.

• Rat and mice poisons.

Sadly we seem to be rescuing more and more seniors from the local council pound this month, which is very sad for these old cats and dogs who should be spending their last years with loving families. So here are two of our current seniors hoping to find loving permanent retirement homes. Remember, SCARS will continue to cover the cost of any vet care or treatment required for animals adopted with pre-existing conditions.

Sophia is an adorable 12-year-old german shepherd cross. She is a real sweetie and still loves to play. She isn’t fond of cats so we will be looking for a cat-free home.

Peebles is a 12-year-old boy who has ended up at SCARS through no fault of his own. He is quite the character and a bit of an independent fellow. He does like to sit on a lap and is happy to soak up attention on his terms. He likes to share time between indoors and outdoors, so a cat enclosure would be ideal.

Surprise visitor gives a fright NATURE

run of hot dry days that had seen the water level in the swimming pool drop to a concerning level made me decide to refill using the hosepipe, which had been stored outside for quite some time. Having attached the hose to the tap, ensuring the ‘business end’ was in the pool, I turned on the tap, only to get quite a shock.

There, swimming in the pool, was what appeared to be a small snake, probably about 30cm long. It had obviously been making itself at home inside the coiled hose. On closer examination, however, I could see a pair of small appendages 4cm back from its snout and a further pair about halfway along its body. Clearly this was not a snake and definitely something I had never seen before. But what was it?

Although it was mainly grey-brown and paler underneath, the shiny-bodied creature did have one significant feature in the form of a paler band across its head, just backward from the eyes. A search of the internet was needed. The head pattern seemed to match that of the very rare brigalow scaly-foot (Paradelma orientalis) but this grows to no more than 16cm and is only found in the brigalow belt of Queensland, not here on the Sunshine Coast.

Eventually further research resulted in a successful positive identification: a Verreaux’s skink (Anomalopus verreauxii), a member of the lizard family, also known as the three-clawed worm-skink. There are, around the world, more than 100 species of burrowing skinks that, through evolution, have seen reductions in limb size as the need for them had become redundant. Everywhere in the world except here in our local area, the degeneration of limbs has seen the forelimbs diminish before degeneration of the hind limbs. Uniquely, here in south-east Queensland, limb degeneration has followed an entirely different pattern

where forelimbs still have functional, but limited, use, each still retaining three stubby ‘fingers’, while the hind limbs are more significantly reduced to fairly useless short clawless spurs.

Although it is one of the most common of the burrowing skinks to be found on the Sunshine Coast, it is, in fact, very rarely seen, preferring a humid habitat and living a secretive existence mainly underground, or under logs, where it feeds on worms, larvae and other insects. It can occasionally be found above ground after dark, but is very quick to burrow into soil or compost if disturbed – hardly surprising as it is regarded as a prime delicacy by various species of snakes. As with many skinks, the creature can discard and later regrow its tail if it is necessary for survival purposes. To reproduce, clutches of soft leathery eggs are laid in moist cavities and then left to their own devices.

How fortunate we are in our patch of Queensland paradise to be surrounded by such a vast array of unique fauna and flora, so keep your eyes open and enjoy.

Little things make a big difference

ith strong market conditions across Queensland, it’s likely we will start to see more people list their properties for sale over coming weeks and months.

With demand for Queensland property at an all-time high, more supply will be welcomed by sales agents as well as potential buyers.

When it comes to selling your property, even in a rising market, vendors should always try to make a property look its best to help secure not only a great price, but also a quick sale. After all, none of us enjoy the strain of keeping our homes in gallery condition for extended periods of time. One of the first things to consider when preparing your property for sale is decluttering your home to help buyers imagine themselves living there. While we all have individual tastes when it comes to home furnishings and decorations, a large photo wall of your family members may be much loved in your everyday life, but perhaps not by a potential buyer.

The same can be said for the general bric-a-brac that we all collect in our homes, including old newspapers, magazines and takeaway menus. Creating a decluttered interior will not only enable buyers to picture themselves living there but also help to shine a light on your property’s best features.

Another truly cost-effective way to prepare your property for sale is by painting it. You don’t have to paint the exterior, but if you can you probably should to help create superior street appeal. However, by giving your property a fresh coat of paint internally it can remove the signs of wear and tear that are part and parcel of living inside a home. On top of that, a colour refresh can do wonders to modernise a property that may still have a paint on its walls that was popular back in the

’90s but is now seen as out of date.

One of the other most effective cosmetic upgrades you can undertake to prepare your property for sale is when it comes to your outdoor areas. Some buyers, after checking out a property listing online, will complete a drive-by to better understand its location as well as position in the street. At the same time, though, they’re making a judgement on whether they like the look of it.

If the property has an overgrown garden or a front fence in desperate need of paint, it may not put them off attending the open home, but it will highly likely make a difference to the price that a buyer is prepared to offer for it. Completing a tidyup in the front yard doesn’t need to cost the earth or even take too much time, but it can make a big difference to the overall street appeal of the property. The adage “first impressions count” is ultimately true in real estate sales after all.

When it comes to listing your property for sale, it’s vital that you work with a sales agent who understands your wants and needs and can help you market your property in the best manner. Figures reveal surging market

T

he latest quarterly data for Queensland property prices (September-December 2020) has confirmed what buyers and sellers already know – prices are rising across Queensland. In fact, figures released by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland via its latest issue of the Queensland Market Monitor show prices increased 6.1 per cent over the quarter across almost every region of Queensland in the final three months of 2020.

The Sunshine Coast is firmly positioned at the top of the property ladder, and it’s no surprise Noosa (pictured) retained its title for the most expensive housing market in Queensland, achieving 15.4 per cent growth to achieve a recording-breaking median house price of $900,000. Units increased by 14.3 per cent to achieve a record-breaking median unit price of $710,000.

“What’s helping propel property prices in particular is the fact that interstate migration is so strong,” REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says. “In fact, the Sunshine Coast, along with the Gold Coast, have been top destinations for internal migration for years now. And with minimal international migration at present, that internal movement is really benefiting our markets relative to other parts of the country.”

The figures reveal that out of 56 regional local government areas, 52 show positive annual growth, representing 93 per cent of the state’s regional market.

“While Brisbane continues to strengthen, it’s equally pleasing to see Queensland’s regional markets outperforming our capital city with widespread property demand and price increases recorded across most areas,” Ms Mercorella says.

“At the tail-end of 2020, the Sunshine Coast remains the shining star of the Queensland property market. Not only has the Sunshine Coast achieved strong property price growth for houses at 7.7 per cent over the year but the unit market is also firing albeit slightly stronger at 8.0 per cent.

“As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen Queensland’s property market perform in ways that go against every economic prediction made over the last 12 months. In fact, Queensland property has remained extremely stable, recording a steady rate of growth that’s really strengthen its market appeal. Between record-low interest rates, low stock availability for sale, improvements in consumer sentiment and Queensland’s unbeatable lifestyle, it’s no surprise we’ve also seen broader increases in values month on month in 2021.”

ith interest rates at historic lows, vacancy rates extremely tight and rents on the rise, there’s never been a better time to buy an investment property on the Sunshine Coast.

House prices are rising by 1 per cent to 2 per cent per month, with listings throughout Australia down 20 per cent year on year, while buyer inquiry is up 8 per cent over the same period.

Despite the price rises, there are still good investment opportunities within suburbs that are in high demand with renters, according to property investment expert James Fitzgerald, the managing director of Custodian.

His top three picks on the Sunshine Coast are Caloundra, Sippy Downs and Birtinya. He says those looking to invest or increase their portfolio should do it this year.

“The cost of borrowing money to buy is half what it was at this time last year,” he says. “The Reserve Bank of Australia has already said it won’t increase interest rates again until 2024 at the earliest so it’s an ideal time to invest.”

If you’ve got a bigger budget to work with, Birtinya (median house price $745,000) is James’ top tip.

“The thing I like about Birtinya is it has the hospital and sits right on the light rail extension, as well as having great amenity and proximity to the beach, airport and new town centre. Healthcare will be Australia’s biggest employer over the next decade so that’s a big plus for me,” he says.

Caloundra (median $575,000) has vacancy rates at

The light rail is going to bring on a lot of house price growth, much like we saw on the Gold Coast.

“It has plenty of amenity for families including beaches, parks, cafes, restaurants, shopping and schools.”

Slightly more affordable Sippy Downs (median $533,250) is another investment hot spot with high demand and low vacancy rates of 0.6 per cent.

“It’s in great proximity to the university and is an affordable area with highway access that will benefit from the new Maroochydore CBD, which is forecast to bring in 15,000 jobs,” James says.

Median asking rents for houses in Sippy Downs have increased 6.7 per cent in the past three months to $626 per week.

“When I’m personally looking to build a portfolio of investments, I’m looking for a bit of cash flow and population growth,” he says.

“These are my top Sunshine Coast areas because they are affordable, the rental yields are strong and their population is growing.”

New CBD opportunities

How to beat the robot resume readers CAREERS

H

ave you ever applied for a job at the same time as a less experienced colleague, but they got an interview and you were rejected? You may have been the victim of an applicant tracking system, or ATS. Applicant tracking systems are used by employers and recruitment agencies to manage online job opportunities across their organisations by screening incoming resumes.

They were first used by large corporations that received thousands of applications, but smaller businesses are now using them too. It is easy for job seekers to submit multiple applications simultaneously, so many people apply for so many jobs they really aren’t qualified for. It’s the culture of ‘may as well, you never know’. Sometimes that works but the result is that about 50 per cent of online job applications do not meet the criteria.

When you apply for a position online, ATS software has three jobs to perform: 1. Scan for basic information such as name, address, contact details, work history, qualifications and referees. If an ATS cannot find this information because your resume was not formatted correctly, it is going to reject you. In fact, it is estimated 75 per cent of resumes are rejected for online applications simply due to the way they are formatted.

2. Grade your resume against a job opportunity. The ATS will look for key phrases and information from the job description.

The software scores your resume in order to determine which candidates are most qualified to join a shortlist that a human will review. This grading is done by algorithms – and the good news is all algorithms can be deconstructed.

3. Filter your application against knockout criteria set by HR and recruiters.

These can be questions such as whether you are eligible to work in a country. If you are unwilling, unable or simply can’t be bothered to follow instructions, then rejection can still happen even if you have

the right skills and experience.

Given all this information, you may be tempted to run your resume through one of the many online ‘ATS software scanners’ out there to see how you stack up, and this could indeed be useful. However, you need to bear in mind that it is only useful for the specific applicant tracking system they will be using.

The best thing you can do is eliminate all the known problems that ATS have in common when they try to read your resume.

• Remove fancy headers and footers, graphics, logos, tables and so on.

• Choose your font wisely. Use sans-serif fonts like Verdana, Tahoma or Calibri. Don’t use anything smaller than 11 point size.

• Take care with bullet points. ATS (and humans) like them, but don’t go crazy with little icons instead of the basic points.

• Always give a physical address. If an ATS cannot find a field of information, chances are your application will be rejected.

• Don’t put your qualifications next to your name in the header. This can confuse ATS systems.

• Don’t start your work experience with dates.

Always start it with your job title, followed by your employer’s name, followed by the dates you held that title.

• Repeat important keywords for the job you are applying for.

• Don’t just use acronyms, also use their spelt-out forms.

• Develop a social media profile that will complement and enhance your applications.

• Don’t worry about submitting a long resume.

In fact, submitting a longer resume includes more relevant keywords increases your chances of ranking higher in the system.

• Don't send your resume as a PDF unless the site specifically asks for a PDF version.

• Check for spelling mistakes.

Setting sail on river adventures

I

t is a beautiful morning on the Noosa River. The sun shines brightly and the water looks good enough to swim in, despite the heavy recent rains.

Here at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, the participants of the Sailability program are making the most of the conditions.

Helped by a team of diligent volunteers, the participants are being taken out in the yacht club’s boats to experience the joys of sailing.

Co-ordinator Ken Plunkett explains that the main goal of Sailability is to give non-sailors with a disability an opportunity to experience sailing.

“The participants experience the wind in their hair and it allows them to forget what they can't do and concentrate on what they can do,” he says.

Each sailor is accompanied by a qualified instructor using a 12-foot Vagabond dinghy. All sailing activity is supported by a safety boat that is on the water at all times.

But the enjoyment of the program, which is not for profit and volunteer-based, isn’t restricted to the participants.

“The volunteers supporting the program find helping out very rewarding and satisfying, doing something they wouldn’t usually do,” Ken says.

Hundreds of juniors set to play on Coast

Sailability is an international program that was first introduced to Australia in the 1990s. This year marks its 10th year at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club after starting in 2010 (activities were cancelled last year because of COVID). The average number of participants can vary from 15 to 25, coming from as far away as Maroochydore and Gympie. They are supported by a crew of 20, which includes sailing instructors, safety boat drivers and observers, general helpers and clerical staff. The participants have conditions such as autism, acquired brain injuries, vision and hearing impairment, epilepsy, seizures and Down syndrome. The club also has specialised equipment so participants can enter the boats without being lifted.

Annette Doeland from the Endeavour Foundation at Noosaville has been a participant in the program for about three years. She says her favourite thing is “getting in and out of the boat now all by myself”.

“I like it and I enjoy it,” she says. “I enjoy going in and out of the boats.”

Ken, who has lived in Noosa for 21 years, has been involved with Sailability in Noosa since its inception.

Paddle-powered craft pose a real problem n the past Coast Guard Caloundra has attended a number of incidents involving canoes, kayaks and surf skis.

In one instance a canoe had overturned in the Pumicestone Passage. Our duty crew found a tourist, who could not swim but fortunately was able to float, being swept by the tide towards the bar and rescued her.

Another case involved a sea kayak in trouble off Kings Beach. The occupant was bailing water out of his vessel using a sponge. But to the shock and horror of our crew the occupant was wearing waders. If his kayak had overturned and his waders filled with water he would have drowned.

“After retiring from the corporate world in Sydney and moving to Noosa, I initially took up a volunteer position with a local disability support provider,” he says. “I then gained a qualification in disability support and after 12 years of employment in that field, retired from that role two years ago.

“Eleven years ago I spotted an opportunity for people with a disability to enjoy being on the Noosa River. The program was started in 2010 by the then sailing manager at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club and myself.”

Sailing has long been an interest for Ken, and it’s clear his passion for the sport is still there.

“I have been sailing competitively since 1980 and continue to do so,” he says. “It allows me to explore my competitive spirit as well as enjoy the social interaction and distraction from today's busy world.”

Noosa’s Sailability program is largely funded by the Noosa Come Together and Noosa Busking festivals, held in June each year. Various other donors also contribute. Any shortfall at the end of the season is made up by the NYRC. Participants pay a small fee, supported by the NDIS. The program started in March and runs for 25 weeks on a Thursday morning, excluding school holidays, and finishes with a regatta in September. Volunteers are more than welcome, a Blue Card is all that is required.

As many of these craft sit low in the water, other boats may not see you. At all times you must ensure you obey the rules of the waterway that you are operating on, be vigilant about your route, watch the weather and avoid shipping lanes.

Fit your personal floatation device (PFD) with reflective tape and wear bright clothing. It is also wise to add reflective tape to your kayak and paddle as well.

At night, carry a white light easily visible to approaching vessels and stay with your vessel if you fall overboard. It is a lot easier to spot a vessel than a swimmer.

aroochydore FC will host the 2021 FQ Community Cup in September, welcoming more than 500 junior boys and girls from across Queensland.

The tournament, to be held from September 20-24, includes a new format in which one zone will be crowned FQ Community Cup champion.

“Maroochydore FC is an excellent venue for the event, which will showcase the many visitor attractions available on the Sunshine Coast,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.

“We look forward to working with the council to deliver a memorable experience for all in attendance as we welcome members of our football community from across Queensland to the beautiful Sunshine Coast this September.

“The FQ Community Cup is a highlight of the Queensland football calendar, particularly for our junior players, and provides a valuable development opportunity not only for players but for young referees from all parts of Queensland.”

Ryan on the archery range

On target for more glory R io Olympics archery bronze medallist Ryan Tyack has secured his spot on the Australian team for the rescheduled Tokyo Games, due to begin in July.

The Mapleton-based athlete has been training up to 45 hours a week, firing off 250-300 shots a day with the Sunshine Coast Archery Club at the Ballinger Park Sports Complex.

Ryan’s preparation for the Games has been hampered by the COVID pandemic but he’s remaining positive about the situation.

“It’s been a really unique lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics but we’ve all had a chance to train longer together, which is great,” he says.

“We were meant to go to Thailand in March, Guatemala in April and China in May, but those plans were scrapped.”

At the moment training is almost a full-time job for Ryan.

“You do sacrifice a lot of time,” he says. “My main day job was doing public speaking in schools but that slowed down slightly with COVID. Any support would be very welcome.”

Ryan formerly lived and trained at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for four years, but says he really enjoys the facilities at Ballinger Park.

“It doesn’t have the flashiest technology but it has a lot of things other clubs don’t,” he says.

then we were the only club in the country that had a shaded area to shoot under. That made a huge difference in the summer.

“We also have an indoor facility. When it was built we were the only one in Queensland to have one.

“Providing archers what they need is important and that’s what Ballinger Park allows. It’s also really peaceful and serene here with the trees and the birds in the background.”

Ryan first discovered archery at age 10, when his mother insisted he get off video games and try his hand at a sport.

“I wanted to do archery or fencing because of the video game I played, so I nagged her (and) she rang the club and they had an open day that same day,” Ryan says.

“I was terrible but I loved it. The first coach I had told my mum not to bother bringing me back, I’ll never be good and to just give up.

“She didn’t tell me that, but after five years I was able to win a youth world championship and I achieved that from doing it again and again and again and working hard at it.”

Councillor Jason O’Pray says it is terrific to see a local club using local facilities and produce an Olympian.

“We are so proud of Ryan’s achievements and will be cheering him on loudly like the rest of the country come July,” he says.

Sunshine Coast Archery Club is a not-for-profit sports club dedicated to fostering all aspects of archery.

Caloundra stadium upgrades complete

Rotarian golfers set to tee off on Coast

ne of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular and versatile venues and it is now even better equipped to cater for sports, events and conferences.

The Caloundra Indoor Stadium has received upgrades to showers, amenities and kiosk facilities, enabling greater comfort and service for the thousands of people who use the venue each year.

“The Caloundra Indoor Stadium is one of the jewels in our region’s sporting crown,” Councillor Terry Landsberg said.

“It is the Sunshine Coast’s only four-court multi-purpose air-conditioned stadium and hosts a wide range of events, from local fixtures to national-level tournaments as well as expos, trade shows, conferences and community events.

“These upgrades to the stadium’s shower and amenity facilities and the kiosk will enable us to deliver an even better experience to the thousands of participants, competitors and visitors who come here for future events.

“Along with these recently completed upgrades, council is planning for the installation of an accessible lift at Caloundra Indoor Stadium to provide access to the mezzanine floor, which is expected to be completed and ready for use mid-year.”

Upcoming events at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium this year include the Queensland Gymnastics Championships in June, the National Table Tennis Championships in July and the Australian Schools Volleyball Championships in August.

he 43rd annual Australian Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians tournament will be held at the Maroochy River Golf Club from May 16-22.

The event is held on a seven-year rotation between the states and territories. It raises funds and fosters fellowship between Rotarians and guests from across the country.

The Rotary club organising the tournament donates the proceeds to the charity of its choice, so the Rotary Club of Maroochydore has selected Wishlist as its major beneficiary. It supports Sunshine Coast hospitals and their patients, families and staff, and provides funds for research, medical equipment and specialised support services.

The golf program includes competitions for a variety of daily prizes and perpetual trophies, plus other contests such as longest drive, closest to the pin and hole in one.
