Spring, already?! it’s been a busy month in my household, with sports events, book week, themed school discos, bush walks, auditions, barbecues and even a broken nose (not mine) – alongside interviews and writing. the time has flown and we are already in spring, with the light lingering for longer, which i love. september looks like another busy month across the hinterland, with the with the Palmwoods spring Harvest (see page 46 for events), the Maleny Youth Festival, sculpture on the edge, Kenilworth Arts Fest and Kenilworth show and Rodeo, all gracing these pages. You will also notice the ‘Back to Nature’ section is more defined – and we invite wildlife and environmental groups to send us their articles, as many of us are keen to learn more about nurturing the land and animals across the Range. We have regular monthly pieces from Barung Landcare, spencer shaw (In the Wild) and tony Wooton (About That Tree), and it’s also a perfect spot for garden groups to share their events and news. on a personal note, i had an illuminating morning with a group of students recently who opened up about their educational experiences, and why they have found ‘home’ at the Maleny Flexi school. one size certainly doesn’t fit all; so it is good to know

there is a practical, yet compassionate, space where young people can refocus and realign. i was so impressed with everyone involved, from the students to the teachers to the outside organisations who are keen to make a positive difference. (Full story pages 6 - 7.) staying with young people for the moment, as you know, last month was the results of the Ht Young Writer of the Year Award, and our winner Aliea Cattley’s story, Jharna, was published. Now is the turn for the runners up! this month we print The Frost, by Caitie davis and in Poets’ Corner, Life as a Tree, by Lucy Macdonald - both are vivid and moving pieces of work. We also have one more runner up story in october, and five highly commended entries to publish over the coming months - all deserve recognition for their exceptional writing. i hope you enjoy september’s Ht - i certainly enjoyed putting it together with my talented team and hearing the ideas, projects and passions of people across our wide and wonderful community. thanks, as ever, for your input and support. And now i'm off to try a 'Laughing Yoga' class - more on that next month!

Sculpture on the

Edge M

AGiC At eVeRY tuRN! one of the most beautiful experiences in the sunshine Coast Hinterland is a visit to the region’s biggest outdoor sculpture exhibition, sculpture on the edge. sitting on the deck of spicers tamarind Resort or strolling through the grounds fringed with rainforest and dotted with amazing sculptures is a must-see experience for locals and visitors of all ages. Attracting entries from all over Queensland, sculpture on the edge offers $10,000 in prize money and attracts work of a very high standard. the competition was founded by Arts Connect inc., a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers from the arts community to encourage excellence within local arts practices through shared activities, workshops, collaboration and mentoring. initially a collaboration with the Maleny Garden Club’s open Gardens Festival in 2010, it was such a success that it led to a stand-alone event generously sponsored by the spicers Group, plus the sunshine Coast Council, iGA and many others. Last year’s winner, Laura Vecmane, draped a tall tree in eco friendly materials linked in a long ‘necklace’ called Adornment for Trees. second place was the quirky Personal Best gymnast by retired engineer Phil Willy and the People’s Choice Award went to the group of three magnificent magpies called Tribe by sophy Blake. the Hinterland Artist Award was won by co-artists tracey Lewis and Leisa Gunton. this was tracey’s first experience entering a major award with a theme and a deadline and she gained so much confidence she’s planning to enter again. “Leisa and i as local artists were further encouraged to keep on with our artistic endeavours, to draw awareness to the history, beauty and vulnerability of our local natural environment, and when we were awarded the Hinterland Artist prize this was a surprise to us both!” Local photographer and President of ACi Richard Muldoon said "the 2019 sculpture on the edge will be the best year yet, with a very high standard of entries from artists across Queensland.” this year's prize will feature over 35 works set amongst the beautiful natural backdrop of the spicers tamarind Retreat in Maleny. opening saturday september 21, the exhibition runs for three weeks until october 13, and all

are invited to attend the awards evening on Wednesday september 25. “Join us for art, live music, and awards as we announce the winners of the 2019 sculpture on the edge Awards,” said Richard. “Held at the always delicious spicers tamarind Retreat, we will be enjoying a twilight viewing of the sculptural works on display from 4.30pm, then rolling into drinks and canapes at 5.30pm with the awards to follow. “Let’s celebrate the arts in our region, whilst we present the winners of the 2019 sculpture on the edge!” Visit sculptureontheedge.com.au for details.

Kenilworth

SHOW

Students showing their calves in 1940 at the Kenilworth Show

100 Years

The charming hinterland town of Kenilworth may have a small population, but it’s big on character and tradition. On September 21, it will be 100 years since their first show – and they intend to celebrate with panache.

by Judy Fredriksen

B

eFoRe tHe FiRst store opened in 1924, before the Post office came to town in 1926, a rich tapestry of community spirit was formed in Kenilworth and still lives on today. “in 1918 the community put on event they called ‘the show’,” says Lenore Meldrum, publicity officer for the Kenilworth show and Rodeo and club historian for the Kenilworth Historical Museum. “it was to raise money for the soldier’s Comfort Fund and at that day’s show, they raised 75 pounds.” the success of that event harnessed the enthusiasm of the locals and on Friday July 18, 1919, a notice appeared in the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser: ‘the First show of the Kenilworth P.A.H & i. society will be held on 25th November 1919’. “the Kenilworth Pastoral Agricultural Horticultural and industrial society was formed in september 1918 and they decided it would be a ‘dry show’, no alcohol,” says Lenore. this was to be a decision that later led to an amusing incident involving an ammunition bag.

4

HiNteRLANd tiMes – sePteMBeR 2019

despite being hindered by drought that year, the locals rallied, producing a wide variety of exhibits which included dogs, poultry, ring events, pumpkins, vegetables, potatoes, maize, butter, eggs, honey, flowers, fruit, paw paws and bananas. But the biggest event turned out to be the cooking. According to a newspaper report, ‘the household section, i.e. cooking, preserves etc., outshone the whole show’. “they had a competition for a collection of jams – the winning entry had 53 varieties of jams,” says Lenore. Who says MasterChef is a modern concept! the first show was deemed such a success that the following year, a group of travellers, including a journalist, came out from Nambour. “they made a special convoy out from Nambour, it was a very quick trip; it only took them three hours,” says Lenore. “Because Kenilworth show was a ‘dry show’, these travellers filled their ammunition bag before they left Nambour. they don’t state what was in the ammunition bag, but you can guess because it was put at the feet of the only prohibitionist in the car.” Fortunately, times have changed and thirsty patrons at the 2019 show are assured they will be able to enjoy a cold beer. the show’s popularity continued with visitors trekking out from Nambour each year, down the hazardous obi in vehicles ill-equipped to handle the steep, winding slope and gushing streams, then going home to tell tales of miraculous survival. in a tribute to these adventurous day-trippers, there will be a re-enactment of the convoy that attended the show in 1920. A collection of stylish vintage cars will transport the group, complete with a journalist, newspaper editor and the suspicious ammunition bag, from Nambour to the 2019 Kenilworth Rodeo and show.

the show was such an important occasion for the Kenilworth district in 1920 that it was gazetted a public holiday for the shire of Noosa with an appropriate announcement being published in the Brisbane Courier. Around 300 patrons attended the 1920 show. Lenore continues: “the first rodeo was held in 1941 and it was to raise money for the Patriotic Fund. the Patriotic Fund in Kenilworth funded the making and packaging of over 300 fruit cakes to the troops in the field during WWii.” this task was coordinated by the Kenilworth Country Women's Association. “they held another rodeo in 1943 and it wasn’t until 1948 that the first bushman’s carnival was held. From 1948, there has been a show every year.” As the name suggests, the bushman’s carnival was a test of strength and skill for the young men of the district with events like show jumping, camp drafting and woodchopping being crowd pleasers. Another local who, in the past, has been regularly involved with organising the show and rodeo is Colin Cunningham. Colin recalls one year, there was only one entry for the rodeo. But in true country spirit, the stoic committee adopted the attitude ‘the show must go on’. “there was only one rough rider,” says Colin. “He must have bucked out about ten times. each time, they just put a different hat on him and sent him out into the ring again.” if the crowd was wise to the ruse, they obviously didn’t care, apparently. the 2019 Kenilworth show and Rodeo will have all the fun, excitement and genuine country hospitality of previous years and more. take a trip down memory lane as you admire the vintage car collection - but watch out for anyone carrying an ammunition bag! expect to see loads of colourful flowers, arts, crafts and traditional baking in the pavilion. Kids of all ages will love the piglet racing and side shows. those who love the thrills and spills of the rodeo will not be disappointed, while equestrian lovers will be treated to the usual show jumping and ring events. other all-time favourites are the woodchopping and animal nursery and it wouldn’t be a birthday celebration without a band, laser show and fireworks in the evening. the Kenilworth show and Rodeo will be held at the Kenilworth showgrounds on saturday, september 21, 2019, 8am-10pm. Admission: adults $15; children 5–15 years $5. Let’s all go party!

ARE YOU A COMPANY DIRECTOR? The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. Directors are expected to: • Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total non-participation is impermissible; • Understand the role that a Director performs; • Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis. Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for. It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts “as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence:

A cause for

celebration

The Maleny Youth Festival is coming and, after meeting the team behind it, HT’s Victoria McGuin is hoping it’s the best year ever for them all.

• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or • when the Company incurred the debt the Director had relied upon the information from a subordinate; or • that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or

o You eVeR HAVe a day where you meet a group of people who fill you will hope and joy? i had one recently when i visited the Maleny Flexi school, based at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. the school is currently working on their annual Youth Festival, which will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Maleny Flexi school on Friday september 13, 2019, 3-9pm. the

theme is ‘day of the dead’, which gives them the opportunity to come together and celebrate ‘all that has gone before, all that is and all that will be’. “this theme has divided opinion, and we’ve learned from that,” said Jo Rickards, the Maleny Flexi school Coordinator, who has a background as a youth worker, social worker and teacher. “But we are using the idea as a celebration, and hope others see this when they come and experience the day for themselves. “We will be recognising students, staff and volunteers who have contributed to our learning community over the last 20 years.” With stalls, live music, workshops, fortune telling and food stands - the Maleny Youth Festival is a testament to the school’s teamwork and creative ideas. i was invited to meet the students recently and happened to arrive at the same time as a student development officer, a Youth Worker/Project Coordinator, Lead Case

• that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt. It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

Worker for CosY (Community Nambour solutions) and a Youth support Coordinator. All were present to listen to the students’ ideas on how to improve the school and offer programs and solutions to help and guide them. it was an example of active listening, humour, openness and kindness, with some exciting initiatives potentially on the horizon. But what impressed me most of all was the students. sat around a large room, some writing, some drawing, others using laptops and mobiles to work, i was given the

opportunity to find out why they chose this school and how they felt – the answers were resoundingly positive. one student, Nick, showed me a jar full of colour-coded slips of paper. each day someone would pull out a piece of paper and ask the question inside, to which the group would respond. i was invited to pull a paper from the jar… Favourite memory at the Flexi School? came out, and immediately a male voice piped up. “the day i joined.” to which many voices murmured agreement, with nods and smiles. “Most days are good,” said Javen. “i wake up and actually look forward to going to school.” Felix added, “discovering my potential, that’s what i’ve been doing here.” “it’s a great working environment,” said Marli. “Kids can fall through the cracks in some schools and feel the pressure, but here it’s a better working environment.” Nick agreed, “it’s home. My first day here, because i’m really shy, everyone was calm, welcoming, awesome. People here care about me. it’s a perfect mindset.” Hearing such encouraging responses is testament to the wisdom and warmth of the team involved, headed up by Jo Rickards. “they tell me this is a space where they can accept each other’s differences but still work together. We have created a therapeutic learning environment,” Jo said. “these young people are not ‘drop-outs’, they needed a different educational program to work to, or find their strengths. sometimes they have had so much else going on in their lives that their amazing talents are not given the green light.” the Flexi school began in 1999, with david Nancaro the teacher who started the school along with Paul tarbuck the first principal. the school works closely with Maleny state High school, who are very supportive and collaborative when possible. “there was very little for young people in the area, and little support, so david and Paul responded to an obvious

need within the community,” shared Jo. “We are still following that course of action, and also trying to get a youth space, which is so badly needed.” Vet (Vocational education and training) based, the Maleny Flexi school teaches Cert 1, Cert 2 and Visual Arts, encouraging students to learn foundation skills for life, such as how to write a compelling CV, banking, how to approach interviews, and learning about idMt (information, digital Media, technology). the students are currently training in tourism, hospitality, make-up, carpentry and much more. “every person has a paid traineeship in Year 11 or 12,” explained Jo. student Lani added, “i feel very accomplished being here. When i first arrived, i never thought i would get to this point. We put together our creative ideas, everyone has their own pace, and i’ve personally done more here than in the rest of my life. “it’s like a home – if i was ever in trouble, they would help. everyone is welcoming and includes each other.” the feeling of connection in the room was palpable. Jo finished with a hint of pride, “We had 100% of QCe (Queensland Certificate of education) outcomes last year these guys are incredible.” if you would like to experience the positivity of the Maleny Flexi school, come along and support them at the Maleny Youth Festival!

Racheal utilises the outdoor classroom set up to teach gardening combined with cooking and art. “i am a creative person myself,” says Racheal, “i just can’t

help but do things to inspire the children. it’s so much more than just weeding and watering.” As you walk through, the sense of wonder, fun and creativity is everywhere. the College also boasts an art kiln, a kitchen and its own market stall, held once a week selling fresh produce, baked goods, cut flowers and preserves. Racheal says the children leave the garden calm and more focused for their normal classrooms. “Children that are struggling with sitting still in class, this is a really good outlet for them, they can come out here and be themselves, get hands-on and dirty, do some active pruning and get all of that out of their system and then go back into the classroom and can focus more.” Racheal loves seeing the children eating more fresh foods, “i say to the children, today, you are going to try something you have never tried before. We get a bread board out and all sorts of bits and pieces and i lay it all out and they try things, it’s good fun.” Activities like digging for potatoes is an absolute hit with children, laughs Racheal, “it’s like a treasure hunt in the ground, you have never heard so much squealing and laughing in your life.” the loofahs that frame the gardens in cascades all stem from just a couple of seeds she says, showing the children the impressive side of nature. “We save our own seeds, including sunflowers and marigolds, and sell them at our stall. inside the garden we are as organic as we can be.” Racheal says it is the children who help it work and be successfully spray free, “if you have a class of 25 students come down for 40 minutes and you have some sort of structure, you can get heaps done.” student Koby is one of the kids who loves the garden, “i like growing food. it’s really active and fun to do,” he says. there is a worm farm and the chickens are a massive hit with children, “they are really friendly girls,” smiles Racheal, “they have lots of cuddles from the students and we use their eggs in our market stall cooking.” And the kitchen garden isn’t just for the younger children, it is part of the whole Prep to Year 12 College, with students from the senior campus and Griffith university students studying medicine and healthy eating habits in children. “i am finding more and more teachers are bringing their classes down, engaging in it, including food and nutrition students from the senior campus and teachers working one on one with Community Pathways students,” shares Racheal. there are so many skills the children learn, including maths, as they weigh the produce, decide on price points and serve customers Bec explains, “the children are getting used to handling change, taking the money, working out how much they need to be giving back. “taking away the devices and calculators makes them really think. it’s all monetary, there is no eftpos machine for the stall, so it’s all real maths skills and real money. the kids are so delighted to be able to provide that service to their College community.” the successful garden program at Nambour state College is a fantastic example of a College run with passion, “there is always something on the go for the children and we ensure our students have a voice and find as many different offerings as we can to provide for our students needs at our College,” smiles Bec.

Perfect abandoned and derelict resort. We worked hard to rise above language barriers as we transformed the buildings and appreciated the culture around us.” Lara’s deepening concern for issues of justice kept her aware of the poverty she could see on a day-to-day basis. the young family visited a refugee camp in thailand to gain a deeper understanding of the local challenges and struggles they were seeing around them. “Returning to regular Western culture in Australia was more difficult than we expected. it was a hugely shaping time. our day-to-day life felt so foreign and different after we returned. We took time out in south Australia in 2010, just to slow down and fully process what we had experienced as we re-established our family footings.” Lara continued her education in social justice by completing her degree in intercultural studies at tabor College and painting with her young children by her side. the family eventually settled back into a rhythm, while remaining keen to hold on to their first-hand awareness of how other people lived. “We travelled to Cambodia to visit and support organisations like Mother's Heart and strengthen our family’s social justice focus. it was important to remind ourselves of our values and that money is not the worth and measure of success.” Her support for the Centre for Men Australia organisation has led to her involvement in another recent project. Painting individuals from the project in intricate detail, she

aims to highlight the journey they have travelled and the dignity, strength, resilience and wisdom that has been etched into their features. “the organisation supports men through rites of passage via wilderness-based retreats, education seminars, mentoring, counselling and spiritual direction. it is a privilege to paint portraits of the men involved and hear their stories. “i see the value in how they teach the rites of passage knowledge and wisdom which is largely absent from Western cultures.” Lara’s Limited/Abundant exhibition this month shares those continued social justice and community support values that she wants to highlight. “this exhibition reflects on the celebration of abundance and the corresponding responsibility we have for the stewardship of limited resources. “My focus is especially important to me as we enter into unknown territory globally. With the effects of climate change being felt and experienced all over the world, it considers our ordinary, daily choices. “i want people to pause and consider how little things are connected to much bigger systems which have a global impact for good or for bad.” Lara is also a published illustrator, finishing two years of illustration work in 2018 on a children’s book by Rosanne Hawke and Lenore Penner, Chandani and the Ghost of the Forest, which was launched in June 2019. the exhibition begins on Friday september 6 at 5.30pm. You can meet Lara on september 6 and 7 and see her beautiful artwork on display in the tin shed behind Homegrown Cafe, Little Main street, Palmwoods.

RYstAL WAteRs Permaculture Village, located 25 minutes from Maleny, recently celebrated its 30th birthday. Residents Ally Bing and Flynn swain have watched the population evolve since Ally moved to the area in 2013. “the community must have been just resting when i first moved here,” says Ally. “While Flynn and i were almost the only people our age in Crystal Waters six years ago, we’ve witnessed the community blossom with a repopulation of young families in a short period of time.” this repopulation was, in part, what inspired Ally (with Flynn’s help) to open the Flowerpot Coffee shop on Crystal Waters’ Village Green. the experience has furthered her appreciation of what it means to live in a community. “From renovation and onwards, we’ve received so much help from friends and neighbours to make the Flowerpot the beautiful place it is today. i only realised after we opened how much a space like this has been needed.” the Flowerpot has fostered the community’s new energy by “giving people a chance to sit down, laugh together, have debates, and put plans in motion. it’s also a place where parents can have a break while their kids run free on the playground. it has been wonderful to see.” everyone is welcome at the Flowerpot. A joyful playgroup gathers on tuesday mornings and the Homeopathy and Chiropractic clinic of Jeff and shirley Bell also opens that day on the deck. the Flowerpot serves an a-la-carte breakfast menu, featuring free-range eggs and RsPCA-approved bacon.

The Frost By Caitie Davis, aged 16

E

ARLY MoRNiNG FRosts melting into warm winter’s days, the heat erased from earth as subtly as it arrived. the sun rises slowly, withdrawing the darkness of the night. the frost that happily suffocated the last fragments of grass the night before gradually fades away. once the sun has stripped the earth of its darkness, it is obvious this land is not the heaven it once was. the drought torturing the land, starving the water from every last piece of grass. this land is barren. the harsh reality of the environment dragging every last drop of strength from the farmers, still desperately trying to provide feed for both their animals and themselves. emaciated cows, horses, sheep and dogs are not an uncommon sight these days. Hay and molasses have become scarce and expensive. tempers are rising, as the grass turns to dirt, money turns to debt and living turns into surviving. the deep, parched cracks running through the lifeless soil illustrate the pain and emotions of the town. Farmers watch helplessly, as the few blades of grass that have regerminated are suffocated by the frosts of the night.

the morning starts off painfully slow because nothing much happens around here anymore. this drought is killing us in more ways than one. Farmers are penniless, the shops have gone broke and the livestock is dying. day by day, nothing changes. We wake up at sunrise with the smallest bit of hope that it has rained, followed by the agony that nothing has changed. eventually after picking ourselves up, the livestock are allowed a few precious licks of molasses. At the beginning of this hell, the cattle fought for molasses but now - sadly - they have come to accept their starvation. When the dusty clock on the mantelpiece finally ticks over to noon, the hours begin to roll through a little quicker, slightly easing the pain brought on by the times. As the scorch of the sun eventually begins to dissipate, the cattle are brought in for their savoured licks of molasses. the sweet drops of the syrup are just enough to keep them going, for the moment, anyway. Many people will never be forced to feel the crushing pain farmers fight as they watch their beautiful, prized livestock starve. these farms are our lives, passed down through the generations, these animals are our family and now we have nothing. No food. No water. Nothing. No one will buy emaciated livestock, no one will buy a farm the drought has squeezed the life out of. this drought has lasted three years now! three years without rain, the town’s population has decreased by half.

We promise ourselves that, if we keep pushing through, the rain will come. it will. it has to. But as the hours turn into days, that roll into weeks and slowly become months, the years drag on painfully without a drop of rain. the hope and the strength the farmers once carried is few and far between. As daylight fades from the vast, barren landscape the hope of rain is once again torn agonisingly from our souls. the bellowing of starving cows marks the end of another painful, hard and rainless day.

Letters Keeping informed

once again a really vibrant edition of Ht, the best giveaway magazine in the country.

i want to thank you for continuing to publish Mungo MacCallum's columns. What a joy! i look forward each month to reading his perceptive and often acerbic comments. in fact it's the first thing i read after i pick up the Hinterland Times. thank you all for your hard work in keeping Maleny informed. Patria Cardle, Crystal Waters

Mungo’s significance it is so reassuring to see Pam Maegdefrau’s letter in this month’s Hinterland Times (August 2019) regarding the worth and significance of Mungo MacCallum’s regular contribution to this paper’s pages. one can rightly understand the polarisation Mungo must at times generate but to respond to the other side and negate his voice would be to ‘turn to the dark side, Luke’.

LIGHT RELIEF & LEUNIG Relax, read a few letters, enjoy a crossword and cartoon, and maybe put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) yourself! We would love you to share your thoughts and experiences with us and Ht readers. email: editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au or write to Po Box 818, Maleny, Qld, 4552. Please include your name, email/address and location. Word limit is 200 and letters may be edited. As we are a monthly, please be aware we are unable to print date-sensitive letters.

i for one other, revel in his intelligent discourse each month and would feel rightly cheated if it should disappear from your pages. i believe that he is at core, even-minded and simply speaks a truth which others of any truly unbiased lucidity must appreciate, regardless of political leaning.

it is the life story of local resident (formerly townsville), Peter Miller. For 14 years in the ‘60s and ‘70s through a daily tV show, Peter delighted thousands of children. it is probably true to say that anyone from the townsville area over 50 would have fond memories of their childhood hero, Happy sam the Clown.

His offering this current month is as accurate and incisive as any i’ve seen from him grace your pages and i applaud it. it recalls a sonnet of my own which i felt impelled to compose quite some years ago now, when Peter Beatty left the stage to Anna Bligh. it was written in the wake of that election and i feel that the import of it has never truly left us in the intervening years. i have the temerity to include it at this point … (See Poets’ Corner).

But this is only one facet of the multi-gifted talents of the man who now lives locally with indifferent health, but with a smorgasbord of careers behind him. surviving a hard childhood and brutal treatment in institutions, Peter survived to become a drover, musician, band leader, music store owner, coffee shop proprietor, tourist coach captain, coastguard hero and cartoonist for a number of northern Queensland newspapers.

Brad Drew, Montville

it’s not a huge book, only about 125,000 words. if anyone is interested in a copy, they are welcome to let me know via yourself, if that suits?

Story of a clown i don’t know whether it would be of interest, but following my Maleny Memories – Through the Lens of Tennis, i have written another book, it ain’t all fun…

Life as a Tree

What Caused The Statesmen All

The Art of Hiding

Leaves rustle as the wind sighs through my boughs. Nodding at my feet flowers.

What caused the statesmen all, to go away; to leave affairs of state to rogues and fools who build a future tainted by dismay, foresight and wisdom absent from their tools? What left us with so very little choice; who at the ballots, is there to give hope and through the shadows, guide us by their voice, convince us of ability to cope?

We gather close around the fire

As seasons change, my leaves change too, Dark green, orange, red, in winter limbs turn icy blue. Thick round trunk branches swaying, little children gathering, playing. Peals of laughter, smiles of many, they love me much more than any.

Well-meaning men, believing they could fly and finish hard, the race they chose to run, too late have found they ventured far too high, their feathers softened, broken by the sun. Where are the men of substance at the helm whom greed or vanity shan’t overwhelm? © Brad Drew, Montville

They lean back against my bark, and stay under my shade ‘til dark.

A lonely stump, leaves littered on the grass, when they hear the news, they arrive very fast. Looking around, sombre and distraught, they’ve lost a battle that couldn’t be fought. Then rummaging around under the leaves, they find one small, brown seed. Sun and water, work and toil, finally it emerges from the soil. A small green seedling, leaves unfold, it may be small, but to them it’s gold. They prune and water with love and care, and eventually…there! A tall, strong sapling, with bright green leaves, a reward for their work, they now receive. A new generation sits round my base, an ear-splitting grin upon each face. Wildlife-friendly gardens

W

HAt HeLPs to make a garden wildlife friendly and attractive at the same time? Four ingredients are diversity, flowers, connections and linkages. Barung can assist with all of these, both suitable plants and helpful hints. diversity includes plant selection and growth habit. different birds and animals use different types of plants as protective cover from predators, for nesting in the case of birds or for shelter at different times of the day plus as a potential food source. insects may be hiding under loose bark, and other garden shrubs produce fruit and/or seeds. Flowers of course are sources of pollen and nectar for birds and insects. At this time of year our native gardens are full of colour. Red bottlebrushes, blue or yellow pea flowers, golden wattles, white and pink ozothamnus, blue dianella, vibrant paper daisies in a range of colours, scaevolas (fan flowers), Helichrysum daisies in blue or pink, white tea trees; the list is long.

Connections are both within and between gardens. A mix of groundcovers, low shrubs, taller shrubs and on to trees allow the wildlife to move up, through and across the garden in safety. Pot plants can be included. At this time of year connections between gardens, plus flowers and diversity, are likely to bring delightful scarlet and other small honeyeaters, willie wagtails, figbirds and

Barung native Plant nursery

others to your garden. Larger birds will travel across open spaces, but the smaller ones prefer to move through a more protected landscape. A friendly garden is likely to support robins and even tiny scrub wrens year-round. these little brown wrens are ground feeders, picking quietly amongst the leaf litter for food and can be remarkably unafraid as you walk past. Corridors link gardens and bushland are most important at the landscape scale but can also join gardens, streets and suburbs. Native street trees are included. in the more densely populated landscape, balconies and small gardens with flowers, low shrubs, herbs and vegetables will bring pollinators like honey and native bees. Birds will also come, especially if a clean, safe water source is provided. enjoy your garden and its visitors and wherever you are, provide water.

Climate Change

W

HeN ReVeGetAtiNG you can plant without tree guards but they can be a valuable aid in protecting the time and money you have invested in planting. tree guards protect trees from several threats including weeds (why can’t our trees grow as fast!), weeding (oops did i just spray my tree too!), frost (cold enough to freeze your leaves off!) and last but not least - grazing and browsing animals (always up for a free feed!). there are a wide range of tree guards available on the market from polyurethane bags, cardboard guards and Coreflute guards. We’ve been experimenting with many, over the years, but have settled on two types of guards that we are very happy with. At the bottom end of the scale we use a 2 litre juice/milk carton. these guards are quick to install, cheap and provide short-term protection for fast growing trees. We use these with a bamboo stake and this combination can provide good visibility for your planted stock if the weeds get away over the summer and you have to brushcut or spray. they only last about six months and are only 300mm high, so don’t provide much protection from grazing animals. For plants that we really want to look after and make sure they get off to a good start we use the Pink tree guards.

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral st, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193

these guards cost more initially but can be re-used several times because of their rigid construction and provide many years of protection. these guards you may see on several revegetation projects around the range including Mary Cairncross, Maleny Precinct and the Woodford Folk Festival site. i like the pink colour of these guards for their high visibility. We often maintain some weed cover on our sites to provide soil protection and improvement. these guards stand out and provide great protection during weed maintenance runs. tree guards are great for protecting stock in the summer months when the ground really heats up and some plants can get cooked at the base. Mulch is the other crucial part of your revegetation project success and Forest Heart ecoNursery / Brush turkey enterprises stock one of the best mulch mats on the market (but i would say that). our Palm Fibre Mats are a long lasting, easy to install mulch, which when used with the guards help trees get off to a great start. We have some great package deals for guards and mulch mats now to help with your spring plantings, come and check them all out at Forest Heart or give us a call to discuss.

Native Plants Sunshine Coast

T

His FRieNdLY GRouP of sunshine Coast locals are keen to grow, promote, study and conserve Australian native plants. some are plant experts who bring an enormous store of botanical, horticultural and local knowledge to the group. Most are enthusiastic amateurs. the group meet monthly for a bush walk or workshops to learn more about our amazing local flora. the next Native Plants sunshine Coast is on september 15 at 9am for a propagation workshop run by Karen shaw, Brush turkey enterprises, 468 Reesville Road, Maleny. $5 per person, with plenty of parking, all welcome. RsVP required to npscevents@bigpond.com or 0427 152 022. Please note this activity is on the third sunday of the month rather than the usual second sunday. Construction materials that can be used include concrete, steel, fibreglass, composites and natural timbers. Pictured is a stepped timber boardwalk we constructed on a steep site linking two beautiful areas of a garden that were previously hard to access.

wallabies and kangaroos. Barbed wire fences close to bat-attracting trees. When the phone rings and a voice asks, “is this who i call about wildlife?” you know something sad is on the way. But not always! some time ago, i got a call about a wallaby killed in Reeseville. Hit by a car, lying on the side of the road. Not much i could do about that but then the caller added, “there’s a baby standing by her!”

i joined another WiLVo - Mel Bell - to find the little orphan. there were two local ladies waiting for us – upset and unsure what to do. the infant wallaby had disappeared. No sign of it anywhere.

ReAd ReCeNtLY that China had created large areas of desert in their country by over clearing, and that they had begun to try to rehabilitate these areas by reafforestation. the results were staggering, in just a few years the fast-growing, drought tolerant species they used had contributed to the water cycle so much that rainfall increased by 100 mm a year, and the incidence of sandstorms was cut by two thirds. in Australia, where most of the country is desert, it seems crazy that we haven’t tried something similar. in fact, we seem to be hurtling in the opposite direction. You only have to look at our region where the remnants of our

forests are being removed for development, and then there are the agricultural areas out west, where it is still open season on anything tall, green and woody. it seems to me that a really simple fix for our climate woes would be a massive, global tree-plant. trees are an ideal way to sequester the carbon which is causing so much trouble in our atmosphere. there is no point waiting until our water supplies start to dry up, like the towns in western Queensland. it is almost too late then. the time to act is now. Go out. Buy a tree. Plant it. Your grandchildren will thank you.

i checked the dead mum’s teats, which were elongated, meaning she was still lactating. Mel and i withdrew a little ways and waited, hoping it would come back. it didn’t. the two locals promised to keep an eye out and do whatever they could to find the young one. After a day or two, i lost hope. then – a call from Mel – they’d found it! defying the odds, the local lady had managed to entice the orphan into her yard and bundled it up. Mel picked up the little one and took to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where it was checked out and put into care. My heartfelt thanks to the local lady. some days are diamond. A quiet request – if you see a dead wallaby, kangaroo or possum – please check to see if it has a young one in the pouch – or waiting sadly by their mother’s side. Sammy Ringer WILVOS #617

uR outeR appearance reveals the depth of the whole person. this Wendy Rosenfeldt includes our health, personality, and emotional state. When we are happy, healthy, eating well and exercising, our skin, hair and eyes are vibrant and clear. if we are stressed, not getting enough rest, eating junk food or taking stimulants and medication there is more dullness in our complexion and our hair and skin can look lifeless. Beauty therapists specialise in treatments that go on our skin to improve our appearance whereas Ayurveda recognises that it is what goes into our bodies that determines the quality of our skin. the skin is not separate to the rest of your body. each square inch of skin contains over a thousand nerve endings, creating a direct link between your skin and your brain. our thoughts and emotions directly influence our appearance. the skin is one of the largest organs in the body and closely connected to the liver. When the liver is unable to digest and fully transform our food and toxins into nutrients and waste, the skin takes over. Applying creams with chemicals or covering up blemishes with make-up, only contributes to the problem. When you apply a product to your skin, it is absorbed by the pores and then into your bloodstream. it is important to use natural products that are free of synthetic ingredients. introducing toxic substances into your bloodstream can aggravate your liver, immune system and ultimately your skin.

eating fresh, organic food including vegetables, fruit and wholegrains is helpful to ensure good digestion. Alcohol, coffee, cheese and fried food can create a load on the liver therefore creating more work for the digestive system. the skin is governed by the principle of Pitta dosha which is fiery by nature. Acne, rashes, dermatitis and itchy skin indicate an excess of Pitta’s heating qualities. Avoiding tomatoes, oranges, pineapple, cheese, spicy food and stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol can help to soothe these complaints. drinking plenty of warm water also helps the body to rid impurities while keeping the skin hydrated. Ageing of the physiology is really due to wear and tear. How we live and how we look after ourselves determines how old we look. Nothing ages us more than stress; whether it is mental stress such as worry, grief and anger or physical strain such as fatigue, excessive activity and lack of sleep. the antidote to both is rest and relaxation. Looking good is really just an expression of feeling good. our outer beauty depends on our inner health and wellbeing. By nourishing ourselves with good food, rest, relaxation and positivity we emanate a healthy glow that no amount of skin cream or make up can obtain. Craving a more restful night’s sleep?

seeM to Be getting more patients that present with low energy levels. some say that this has been an ongoing slowly developing problem, others that it seemed to happen after they got some sort of virus. some think it’s their job, or the weight of family responsibilities, etc. While there is no doubt that there may be many contributing factors, the symptoms that present are very much the same. Low energy levels that don’t respond positively to things that have worked before. Research suggests that the chemicals in our food, and the way it is processed and offered to us are impacting our health and emotional wellbeing in many ways. the Wifi addiction that holds so many of us captive either through stimulating our interest or by feeding our need for constant entertainment, or even as an extension of the work we do is altering our brain waves. We need natural light; our bodies require certain energy frequencies that keep us healthy. our exposure to sunlight and also the need for darkness is a prerequisite for our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

the sleep hormone Melatonin is an antioxidant that helps to promote deeper more refreshing sleep without the hungover effect we can get from sleeping tablets. Melatonin also plays a significant role in balancing immunity and promoting skin health. dHeA is another hormone that protects against stress, ageing and protects skin health. Your magnificent body has the ability to make both of these substances and by dampening down stress, your mind becomes clearer, you regenerate and you make better choices for your health and wellbeing. Mindfulness and Meditation are the most natural ways to re-establish healthy levels of Melatonin and dHeA. Yoga Nidra, perfect for busy individuals, is essentially just lying on your back and relaxing. Mindfulness and meditation can be as simple as observing the flow of your breath. Both have been shown to re-establish healthy levels of both these hormones. i’m happy to show you how these exercises can help, or just pop on Youtube and do some research for yourself.

Fall prevention

i

N AustRALiA, one in three people over 65 experience a fall each year. if you think that’s a worrying statistic, you’re right. Falls are the leading cause of hospitalisation for Australian seniors, with an average of seven days spent in hospital following a slip, trip or stumble. Falls are a major health concern for older Australians, and often the catalyst for a loss of independence. one incident turns into a fear of a falling, which then results in the person limiting their movements. of course, this is counterproductive – avoiding activities means we become less active, and over time, we become weaker and increase our risk of falling. it’s important to recognise that falls are not a ‘normal’ part of ageing and are preventable. For over 65s, the biggest risk factors for avoidable falls are: lower body weakness; mobility and balance issues; foot pain or bad footwear; vitamin d deficiency; vision problems; hazards around the home. thankfully, there are a number of tips to help you reduce your risk of falling. Tip 1: Build your balance some activities that help you do that include tai chi, yoga or aerobics, tennis or lawn bowls, or standing on one leg and other balance exercises. it’s also important to address any foot issues that might be affecting your balance, so talk to a podiatrist. Tip 2: Improve your strength Muscle mass declines with age, so it’s important to maintain your strength as much as possible, particularly in your legs. some everyday strength training exercises include walking the dog, gardening, leaning the house, and swimming. Tip 3: Give your body what it needs A healthy diet and lifestyle ensures your body has all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to work as it should. Calcium is especially important for bone development, while Vitamin d is needed to absorb the calcium. Tip 4: Improve your vision our vision tends to change as we get older. since bad vision is a big risk factor for falls, make sure you have your

eyes checked at least once a year. Also, always wear your glasses when you’re moving around, make sure your glasses fit properly and keep your glasses clean. Tip 5: Remove hazards around the home to reduce your risk of falling at home, you should: replace any loose or slippery tiles, especially in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry; keep loose cords and cables secure with electrical tape; install anti-slip surfaces in high traffic areas and stairways; rearrange furniture to give you more room to move around freely; keep all areas well illuminated, install motion sensors, use touch lamps or leave a light on at night; add hand rails to staircases or install ramps, and add grab bars and non-slip mats in the shower or next to the toilet. Ask for help if you need it. if you have any mobility concerns, make sure you talk to a health professional, like your GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist. they will evaluate your risk and discuss strategies to help you improve your balance and strength.

“We were greeted members of the Loud Crowd (individuals with Parkinson’s that participate in a weekly speech therapy group program) and family volunteers. these texans committed time and finances, and were passionate to meet and communicate the importance of this therapy to us.” the enthusiasm was contagious and Cathy, Karen and Louise have returned determined to increase patient access to this quality speech treatment. Parkinson Voice Project has developed a two-part therapy approach that strengthens the muscles used for speaking and swallowing by combining individual speech therapy (sPeAK out!®) with ongoing group therapy (the Loud Crowd®). “the program emphasises speaking with intent and converts speech from an automatic function to an intentional act,” explained Louise. “sPeAK out! consists of individual sessions and the Loud Crowd consists of weekly speech therapy sessions and provides camaraderie, support, and encouragement for this patient population that is battling a progressive, degenerative condition.”

The

N tHe Good oLd dAYs, when officers were gentlemen and sometimes vice versa, most barracks observed an iron rule: no mention of politics, religion or women in the mess. such subjects were considered not only indelicate but divisive – a distraction from the unity of purpose needed for the core business of killing off the actual enemies. And also the taboo conversations got in the way of serious drinking and healthy hijinks, the morale building exercises so necessary to sustaining an army intent on preserving and extending the empire. so it is painful to have to report that this wholesome tradition has been completely abandoned within the mess that is the modern Liberal Party of Australia. Not only do they regard a ban on politics, religion and women as unnecessary – they seem to talk of little else. Politics, of course, is the staple, the bread and butter topped with the garnish of the day. Politics is not to be confused with policy, an awkward and perplexing puzzle best left to the boffins or preferably ignored altogether. But politics is all the go: tactics, spin, deception, conspiracy, smoke-filled rooms filled with factions and would-be war lords scrabbling to mount the dung heap from which they can crow with meaningless triumph until displaced by the next rooster on the make. Neither unifying nor edifying, but an addiction they have no interest in shaking. And women? Well, the mere fact that the Libs spend so much time assuring each other that they do not have a woman problem suggests something close to an obsession. the women involved either put up with it or occasionally complain, or even resign, after which they cease to be a problem. But they are talked about anyway, especially by those who consider themselves the big swinging dicks who are really in charge, just as God intended. And so we get to God, or at least religion. And this is where the mess turns into a real dog’s breakfast, requiring tongs and rubber gloves to handle, and flamethrowers and fire hoses to clean out if things go awry. As they do, and have. our Attorney General Christian Porter has finally unveiled his package designed to mollify the disaffected rump rolled

a defence for wealthy employers to claim that as long as it is an essential part of retaining their profits, the sackings can be justified. so even if the new legislation goes through, israel Folau would still probably have ended up in court. As, inevitably, will a lot of other people, because the Porter model abounds in ambiguity: an important clause relies on what is regarded as “reasonable,” a highly subjective idea that will have any worthwhile lawyer slavering. And in any case the zealots are not remotely interested in reason: faith is what they affirm, and they have lost it in Porter. Not that their opponents are any happier: the LGBtiQ mob have correctly noted that this is basically all about them, without the same-sex marriage debate it would never have happened. so Porter’s announcement is just another battle to be fought, and, like all those in the past and all those still to come, it is essentially a zero sum conflict: every millimetre the Christians win is a millimetre they lose. they are worried that religious anti-discrimination may override gender anti-discrimination, they are not sure to what extent the impending federal legislation will upend the various state laws on which they depend. And of course Porter has only provided a draft – they know that the Christian lobbyists, already furious that they were not allowed to write the bills themselves, will be breaking down parliamentarians’ doors with threats of the hideous electoral vengeance to be wreaked if they do not get their way. Morrison has now celebrated a full year as Prime Minister and a full 100 days after his miraculous election win. But in spite of the boosters, he has substantially little to show for it apart from tax cuts, which have proved ineffective to date and have even less prospect of success in the future. the rest of it has been all froth and bubble, the bubble he regularly derides. We are constantly told that his party is united and in good heart – but as we have seen, the tensions have not gone away, they have merely been suppressed. And the showdown over religion could well provoke a serious schism. trouble is brewing in the mess.

Mess on same-sex marriage. this, of course, is not what either he or they call it: the crusaders see it as a gallant and desperate rear guard action to stop Australia sliding into the secularism guaranteed by the Australian constitution, a subversive document whose heathen overtones have only recently become apparent. one of the more hyperbolic, Greg sheridan, began his sermon with the absurd assertion: “Religious freedom is under genuine threat in Australia.” it isn’t, of course: not even the conservative Phillip Ruddock, who produced the review to bring the faithful succour and solace, said there was any need for alarm. But for the sheridans of this world, alarm and panic is their default position. so, against all their previously held conservative beliefs, they now want to rely on international law and convention to buttress their privileged positions against the marauding pagans at home. Porter, despite his first name, is clearly a heretic, a candidate for the stake once the holy war ends, as it must, in a theocratic victory, an Armageddon in which the unbelievers will be thrown into the fiery pit where they belong. the mild-mannered sandgroper has ducked the apocalyptic struggle, offering only a few extra tidbits for the already groaning trough. in the name of less discrimination, he is in fact planning to deliver more: further exemptions for those who claim to be godbotherers to break the laws of the land the rest of us must observe. But they will still not be allowed to run free; there will still be limitations on hate speech, although it is not entirely clear where the line will be drawn. And the right to hire and fire those who defy their contractual obligations by claiming evangelism as an excuse is to be offered a lifeline: incomprehensibly, it will be

L

oCAL CoMMuNitY organisation Cygnet Centre for Peacebuilding invites Maleny and surrounding communities to join them in ‘Growing Peace,’ a two-part, arts-based celebration to express, connect with, and dialogue about peace on international Peace day, september 21, 2019. ‘Growing Peace’ will commence with an afternoon event, ‘expressions of Peace,’ which will include an Acknowledgement of Country, a Corroboree, collaborative arts activities and a closing ceremony featuring music, song, and the creation of a peace tree. there will be a talking circle focussed around peace, inclusion, and reconciliation during the afternoon, followed by ‘Harmonies for Peace’, an evening concert of intercultural sacred music, closing with a minute of silence dedicated to peace. the celebration, to be held at the White eagle Lodge

in Witta, will include offerings from local indigenous group ‘Gifted Murris unit’ (GMu) and sydney sacred music singers, Kim Cunio and Heather Lee. Both groups share a strong affinity with Cygnet’s focus on peacebuilding. GMu is owned and operated by david and Mark Peters, Pititinjara men who are proud to be able to share ancient lore and culture, connecting and facilitating while maintaining a safe space for people of all cultural backgrounds to learn and create. Kim Cunio and Heather Lee are known to Coast audiences through appearances at Woodford Festival and sacred music concerts in the region. their approach is inclusive and expansive, working across many traditions and cultures. the afternoon event begins at 2.30pm, while the evening concert starts at 7pm. tickets are $5 per person for the afternoon, and $25/$20 (concession) for the evening concert. Community art and craft activities will take place throughout the afternoon. Art supplies will be provided, and tickets and food for both events can be booked through tryBooking. to find out more visit the events page on Cygnet’s website: cygnetcentre.com, check out their Facebook page, or phone Cygnet on 0424 793 095.
