Hinterland Times Young Writer of the Year 2021

O

nce again, our annual writing competition has been a pleasure for us, with so many young writers sharing their work. There were stories from Maleny to Pomona, as we have extended the competition to our sister paper, the Sunny Coast Times.

We received entries from students at various schools: Nambour State College, Mountain Creek State High School, Caloundra State School, Pacific Lutheran College, Nambour Christian College, Maleny State School, The River School and Montville State School.

Thank you for encouraging your students to fire up their imaginations and take part – it’s heartwarming to have your schools support us in this.

Thanks also to all the homeschoolers who entered, and those who decided to write from home, independently of their schools.

Our winner, Diya Joy, hails from Maleny, and we had to choose three runners up, rather than two, as it was too close to call! (Unfortunately, one of our runners up was away during the front cover photoshoot.)

We have two highly commended writers, who were only one point behind the runners up, and a few special mentions.

HT writer and one of the competition judges, Gay Liddington, said, “I was impressed at the high standard of creative concepts, imagery, and writing skills. Entering competitions encourages us to meet deadlines and be the best we can be at that time.

“Those who enter, show courage, belief in themselves and their willingness to learn and grow their craft.”

You can read the winner’s story and one runner up story on pages 10 and 11. The other two runner up stories will be in the next issue.

Nambour’s unofficial mayor Part 2

Standing with dapper elegance is the unofficial mayor of Nambour, Kevin (Kevi) Bryant, with his old-world gentlemanly charm a stark contrast in a crowd of bustling people with Covid masks. He is an advocate for the town, a regular fundraiser, and he has time for everyone.

evi walks from his home in the morning dressed in fine clothing that has been recycled from the local op shops, or some of the local seamstresses in town have created jackets for him. He pops into the local shops to say hi and probably knows nearly every business owner. Anyone he meets he will greet with a friendly smile.

Kevi says the town has so much going for it, Rob Skelton MP is a “top bloke doing good things”, Senior Sergeant Gary Bradley is an excellent bloke to have looking after the town.

“Top people here. They really are.”

Along with enjoying people, Kevi enjoys his music.

The Australian music scene is in his blood. “I used to manage a music shop with the original drummer of ACDC for a lot of years. 208 Anzac Parade. Gee, we used to absolutely run amok.”

And it all happened by chance. “I was coming home from the pub one night and thought, yeah, I wouldn’t

mind being involved in something like this and then Noel come out. Long hair, beard, smoking camel cigarettes, he has just left Rose Tattoo to join this band, Speed Limit. We got talking.”

He has met a lot of interesting people along the way.

“Neil Smith, what an absolute amazing musician, the first bass player in ACDC, he was declared blind in 1984. His brother wrote that song, Get a haircut and get a real job, for George Thorogood. I love that song.

“I sold a drum kit to Kerry Jacobson, that was interesting. And the last time he played with Joe Cavallari at the RSL the duty manager said to me, ‘How do you know Joe’s drummer?’ And I said, I sold him a drum kit in ‘83!

“It was all good fun mate; I learned a lot. Some of the funniest, amazing things. And I sort of think, I’m glad I was there to see that. Just amazing things.”

“We have had people from Hawaii. Last year 30 people came from WA even during Covid. The joint packs out. Everyone turns up.

And this rock and roll life led him to his involvement with Nambour’s very own Retro Rocks, bringing music and fun to the town.

“Pat Capoche is one of our best Rockabilly artists and he has just been rated as one of the absolute top in the last century worldwide.”

Retro Rocks was local entrepreneur Kathleen Ashworth’s brilliant idea and Kevi says he jumped at the chance to be involved. It has been going strong for eight years now and attracts tourism from all over Australia.

Kevi says the exciting happenings don’t just stop with the Retro Rocks Festival.

“There are a lot of things happening. It has so much potential [Nambour]. Hopefully by halfway through next year things will be really moving.

The Sunshine Coast’s first Custom Culture event of its type, Retro Rocks features custom and classic cars and bikes, Rockabilly music and dancing, and fifties fashion with a side of Nambour nostalgia.

“Things are already happening in town. Stay tuned! We just got to keep that vibe happening. If you sit around saying nothing is going to happen, nothing happens.”

Kevi says Nambour has so much going for it and people need to focus more on what it does have, rather than what it doesn’t.

Life is still good. Kevi and Tony Kay both know the importance of looking forward in life – image Rebecca Mugridge. 

He says when he was involved with the youth centre, at the old military hall in Price Street, there was a Leap Scheme Project where the kids all built walks out at Kondalilla Falls, and it gave them new direction.

“It was fantastic. And a lot of those kids ended up getting really good jobs. They are going great guns.

“Whatever you are given, work with that. You have more than you think.

“I just came out of hospital the other day and my doctor said I had a mini stroke. You don’t worry about too much stuff though because, you know, it will kill you if you do. And there is always someone worse off than you.

“A friend complained about a bit of a headache that turned out to be five brain tumours. You run into people like that. But you know what, he is just happy to be here, at this time, on this planet, happy to wake up. And that's how I see it, mate.”

Tony Kay is one of the locals whose day gets a little brighter when he bumps in Kevi.

“This bloke is a true champion, doing what he does.

He goes out there and chats to people and gets involved in things, always has a nice word to say.

was in Cairo when the Gulf war broke out, in Moscow during Glasnost, in Berlin when the wall came down, on a beach in Thailand during the Boxing Day Tsunami, and in the room when love walked through the door.

“Life is full of amazing moments, and we never know when they are going to happen. Some would say it’s luck, but I think it’s just life, and if you aren’t out there living it, you won’t be there when it happens.”

“We are a family of barefoot travellers and builders!

My father, one of the founding fathers of Thredbo, was born to Austrian parents and grew up with no shoes in the Solomon Islands.

“They moved back to Austria, where my father walked back with no shoes from a prison camp on the Russian front when the war ended. He started with no shoes and finished with no shoes. My grandfather was a timber merchant, my dad a builder, and my son, a carpenter.

“My Mum, who is of Irish ancestry, was a schoolteacher, then a business owner, and in retirement became a book editor.”

Alex was born in Lindfield, Sydney, the second of three children. Her love of English was the anchor that kept the youngster in school.

“We climbed a cliff and then the waves started hitting the cliff. It had been dug out by bulldozers to make room for a few more huts and I thought, this is not safe. So, when the wave receded, I grabbed my children and ran down the cliff carrying Ella. Voices behind called, ‘Don’t go, don’t go’.

“I ran, then turned for a moment and looked back.

Everyone who was on the cliff was following me. We ran through the bush and up the mountain.

“I went to an acceleration school for gifted children for the last couple of years of primary school, but I was bored and dropped out by Year 10.

“My parents were very forward thinking. They believed in doing what fills your heart— doing what makes you happy, and I wasn’t happy. They gave me a choice: Go to a different school for Years 11 and 12 or get a one-way ticket to Byron Bay and a backpack for my birthday. That was in 1982.”

“We backpacked around the world for ten years.

Back in Australia, we travelled the country in a Kombi, upgraded to a troop carrier and went up through the centre where we lived at Uluru for the winter and worked on the new resort. Buddha came everywhere with us.

Buddha and Alex toured Australia, living out of a HT Holden, then a Kombi.

“She was like my little shadow. I was her person. I didn’t have to teach her anything, she just knew. She was amazing.”

Alex speaks of her journey as though life is on a travelator and tells a fleeting tale of “a bit of a run in with cervical cancer”, which took her back to Sydney, surgery “that didn’t go well”, then a $50 courier airplane ticket to England. It was at the airport Alex met her future husband.

November edition of HT: Single mother Alex sells her furniture to pay for a business course. She starts the Sunshine Coast Women Entrepreneurs and in 2015 is a Businesswoman of the Year finalist. Within a year, tragedy strikes. A motorbike accident leaves Alex with an acquired brain injury.

“I spent a lot of time with the Pitjantjatjara people. Uluru had just been handed back, and they were taking over management. I went on tours with them and learnt how to throw a spear and light fires the traditional way.”

With traveller’s blood coursing through her veins, Alex chose Byron Bay and found a companion to accompany her on the road.

“I travelled alone, often barefoot, mostly in northern New South Wales and Queensland, and did a bit of hitch hiking. It was during a storm that I found my dog, Buddha. She was in a phone box in Tugun and had been shot with an air rifle. She was tiny, only a few weeks old—wounded and dumped.”

“That was a major turning point in our lives. I was a bit of a mess when we came back from Thailand.”

In 2004, divorced and with two children, Flynn and Ella, six and four years old, Alex moved to Thailand intending to teach English.

“We backpacked around for a couple of months and then went to Ko Phayam Island up near the Myanmar border. We were living on the beach when the Boxing Day tsunami came. There was no warning.

“We had just come to the café for morning tea. The initial wave hit at the mouth of the bay, about 100 metres out. It was like a barrel. It kept coming. The sound was like being on a tarmac with a jet plane landing. I saw my four-year-old daughter standing on the table screaming, but I couldn’t hear her because of the noise. The wave swallowed up the beach and kept coming.

“I grabbed Ella and ran out the back door. Flynn, who had climbed a tree to get out of the water, also appeared at the back door. We connected and dashed into the bush. Too slow. An English backpacker threw Flynn over his shoulder and ran.

“It was incredibly hard to lose my mum to cancer when I was 28. It has informed my journey with breast cancer in that I was determined to fight it with every tool in the box. I’ve done everything in my power to be here and I wanted to enjoy this new life now rather than when I am 70!” Jo says grittily.

While the climate of the hinterland reminds Jo of Melbourne, in that she sees the seasonal changes and the cool weather, Jo also loves being so close to everything, beaches, city and bushwalks.

October is also known as Pinktober - the month for breast cancer awareness so what better time than now to share the story from Witta local and breast cancer survivor Jo Cockram.

hree years ago after a long drawn-out

by JACQUI treatment for breast HENSEL cancer, Jo Cockram decided to throw the switch and restart her life in Witta. Originally from Melbourne, Jo and her family found paradise waiting for them in a little acreage cottage with views over a lake.

Moving to the area was a long-held dream that Jo and husband Geoff had thought could wait until they retired.

With Jo’s battle in the rearview mirror, they decided that actually, right now was the right time.

“I felt it was important to make this move while our girls were still young enough to appreciate the change in lifestyle.

“In the space of twelve months after I finished my treatment process, we had sold our house in Melbourne and found our lovely country acreage. It all happened so quickly!” Jo reminisces.

“I had a few non-negotiables. I had to have a veggie patch, a chook shed for some chooks and a pool for the girls. I wanted the girls to go to school in our community, so they could make friends locally.

“I lost my mum, grandma and a cousin to breast cancer, as well as losing my Dad to lymphoma last year. So, it was in the back of my mind to do this before something happened to me.

“However, I have had a very positive outcome from my treatment and I am coming up to five years cancer free

“Geoff and I wanted to bring us all back to the simple life and focus on our family. We were very much a part of the city rat race with both of us working full time and the girls in care. It was time for a change. So many of our family and friends have been up to visit us in our piece of paradise. I know they are sick of all my Instagram posts,” Jo laughs.

“Sometimes after school or on weekends we can go for a walk in our beautiful area and talk to cows, alpacas, goats and buffalo. We come home again and go and talk to our chooks. It’s a complete change to everything we have done before. I really feel like a part of the community. I am involved with the girl’s schools and sporting organisations as well a fitness group that keeps me motivated”, explains Jo. “My journey with breast cancer started when I was about 25 years old and my mum was diagnosed. Mum had a very aggressive form of breast cancer. She got on top of it for a couple of years, but then she passed away when she was 51.

“My sister and I were watched over continually by mum’s specialist, so when my cancer appeared it was a very early diagnosis. A lot had changed in the treatment process since my mum had cancer so although it was the same type of cancer, I had a much better outcome,” Jo explains.

“I had such a great treatment team. I had absolute faith in my specialist and what he recommended for me as a plan. He put me onto a multi-disciplinary team. I had breast care nurses, an oncologist, dieticians, exercise physiologist and a psychologist.

“The holistic care team was so important to me.

They were on top of everything. The surgery I had to have happened very quickly, but I felt supported the whole way.

“I’m naturally a pretty positive person and I think

PINKTOBER that helped when it came time to go through the chemo treatments. I always focused on the next thing and getting it done so I could move forward.

“One thing that helped me a lot was going to Pilates after a treatment session. The effect of exercise after a treatment meant less of a reaction. It was also good for my mental health.

“There were days where I couldn’t move, I felt so sick.

Sometimes a walk to the end of my street was all I could manage. But overall exercise became an important part of my process.

“My family really pulled together for me. Especially my sister. She was amazing and I was so glad to have her beside me through everything. My Dad, who was facing his own battle with cancer, was so supportive. We kept each other’s spirits up,” Jo smiles.

“There are so many women I have met that have survived breast cancer. I have made friends with an amazing group for breast cancer in Maleny. They meet once a month on the second Wednesday of the month at Flaunt in the Riverside Plaza, and have been a great way for me to meet other survivors. They are a wonderfully supportive group.

“We have morning tea and catch up with each other.

There are sometimes reps from companies that talk about prosthetics and breast care after mastectomies.

“It’s just a safe place to share experiences and tips. It’s very relaxed and everyone is welcome. It’s good to know that you can be professionally fitted up here in Maleny,” Jo says.

The Mother’s Day Classic is a fun run or walk event that is held nationally to raise money for Breast Cancer. It is something Jo and her sister Andrea do as a way to pay tribute to their mum and other family members.

“It feels important to give back to the people who supported me on my journey and to acknowledge the successes and the losses.

“I usually do it in Melbourne with my sister, as it’s a great reason to get back down there to see her and my friends. Covid 19 has made travelling a bit hard, so I will go to one near me. They are held all over Australia and there is usually one nearby.”

Location details are on the Mother’s Day Classic website. This year they raised over two million dollars.

With so many people facing cancer, and as someone who can look back on it, Jo advises embracing help and support. Listening to your body, letting it heal.

Accepting your journey both medically and spiritually. Giving yourself permission to enjoy the simple things and don’t sweat what you can’t manage. Most importantly, she believes you need to take the time to slow down and enjoy your life.

“I know now that I will get to see my girls grow up. I will be a part of their lives and those of any grandchildren I’m lucky enough to be blessed with. For a while there I didn’t think that would be possible. But I know now that I will be here,” concludes Jo with a smile.

TIME TO CHECK YOUR TANKS With most homes on the Range using water from rainwater tanks, bores, and springs, most of us are very conscious of our water consumption. The national household average daily use on the Sunshine Coast is 203 litres per day (approx 45 gallons) including outdoor usage.

It is very helpful to learn how much the water level in your tank drops per week in a dry time to help monitor and budget with your reserves.

If your tanks are getting low, its best to contact a water carrier sooner rather than later to order a delivery. According to one of our delivery companies, the current wait time is about ten days however that can easily blow out to several weeks if the dry period continues. The average cost is around $200 for 10,000 litres delivered. The average inground concrete tank is approximately 45,000 litres so a truckload is only 1/4 of a full tank!

The roof on an average size home will collect approximately 3 million litres per year based on the average rainfall at Maleny of 1991mm. (Source Patrick Stacey – Maleny Weather Station). One of the best tips for new home builders is to not skimp on rainwater tanks when construction is underway.

Our predominately summer rainfall often means overflowing tanks through much of the summer and a shortage during the drier winter months due to inadequate storage capacity.

Tips for better water usage include: dual flush toilets, eliminating leaking taps, front load washing machines, dishwashers with higher water efficiency, efficient shower roses, mulching and watering gardens only when plants require it.

Clear instructions for visitors from the city on water conservation are also very helpful. Improved grey water usage systems are increasing in popularity as well.

ARE GOODS OF AN ’ACCEPTABLE QUALITY’?

It had been months since I’d seen my family. We were all dotted across Australia, from Cairns to Cradle Mountain. In between lockdowns and border barriers it was impossible to plan anything. I felt like I had been in a lockdown all of my own lately, even without the government mandates.

As we are close to Mother’s day, I thought it useful to raise the issue of the quality of the goods that you will purchase for your Mum – or indeed gifts that you receive because you are a mum - and what happens when the goods you have just purchased or received do not meet your expectations. The Competition and Consumer Act (2010) (Cth) (the Act), and incorporating in its Schedule 2 the Australian Consumer Law, provides uniform legislative protections for all Australians, based on the premise that goods must be of an ‘acceptable quality’.

Prior to the Act’s introduction, rather than considering whether goods were of ‘acceptable quality’ you would consider the good’s ‘merchantable quality’. This generally meant that goods bought only had to be ‘reasonable’ in description and price rather than ‘acceptable’ in description and price. In other words, the new requirement of ‘acceptable quality’ demands a great level of quality than merely that of ‘merchantable quality’.

How then does one establish whether goods are of an ‘acceptable quality’? The Supplier guarantees that the goods must be: • • • •

fit for the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied acceptable in appearance and finish free from defects safe and durable.

Therefore, goods that are of ‘merchantable quality’ might not be ’acceptable’ to a consumer if, for instance , there is minor blemish in the appearance. Note, however, that, if the blemish was brought to your attention at the time of purchase it may be regarded as a product of “acceptable quality” as you were made aware of the defect, and elected to continue with the transaction.

A supplier may have breached this guarantee of ‘acceptable quality’ if: •

the product would not be acquired by a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the nature and extent of the failure; or the product did not match a description or a demonstration model; or the product did not meet the standard that is expected of goods of that nature, or the supplier did not disclose that the goods are unfit, or the goods are unsafe.

Running the corner store was a full-time job, especially when I had to run it all on my own. While I loved the job, it didn’t exactly allow me a butler to fold me laundry or do my dirty work. Nevertheless, I was happy. I was a lot better off than many people.

ang! A shockwave swept through me as a loud crash drowned out the sound of my laboured breathing.

They were back for more. I had nothing left to offer them. But it was rare that they listened. I whirled around, ready to face my attackers. Alas, it was only the howling wind that had blown my shop door open.

Breathing a sigh of relief, I strode across the mottled brown tiles and locked the door. I ripped my black mask from my face, inhaling the cold night air. You didn’t have to wear them on your own. I glanced around my small convenience shop floor. The shelves were bare, nothing but a few obscure cans and toothbrushes hiding on the second level.

Another COVID cluster had been announced in the community. With a lockdown looming, people had panicked and flooded my store for essentials. They ravenously raided canned foods, pasta, bottled water, toilet paper and other products deemed imperative for survival. Shutting the lights off and stepping outside into the dim car park, I closed the door to my tiny convenience

This disease wasn’t only killing our people in crowded hospitals, it was killing their livelihoods. Their connections.

Their ways of life. I’d won the lotto. I had my cat, my apartment, my books. What else do you need in life?

My throat ached as I pulled into my single parking space. That was new. Slinging my backpack over a shoulder, a small cough escaped me, probably an effect of the layers of dust caking the garage.

The LED light above the stairs blinked haphazardly, the closest thing to a rave party that would occur in the tiny block of units. Unable to face the fifty or so stairs up to my floor, I took my chances with the ancient elevator.

The metal groaned menacingly before collapsing on the fourth floor. Pushing the doors open sent spots before my eyes. I almost dropped my keys when I barged into my apartment.

Percy mewed expectantly, I had taken too long, and he was starving. “In a minute Perc,” I replied as I flopped onto my couch with a heavy sigh. Why was I so exhausted?

The incessant ring of my phone pulled me away from the edge of sleep. “Is this Audrey Smith?”

“Yes?” “We have reason to believe an infectious COVID case has been in your store recently. You may be at risk.”

She clumsily clawed along each unstable step, with no enthusiasm in her voice or movements like usual.

Arriving at the top she laid her eyes on a dimmed room littered with cobwebs and tiny spiders in every dingy corner.

A mess of old toys, letters, and parcels lay crowded on the wooden floor, nearly knocking her over as she tried to move. The only source of light was a small wood-framed window that only invited in small beams of light.

Suddenly, a faint alarm went off. “My cake,” Lily’s mum muttered to herself. She climbed down the rustic ladder clumsily, leaving Lily by herself.

Lily found a broken cardboard box laying in front of her, with old dust-coated toys leaking out, and an envelope laying on top. She snatched it up with her small chubby hands, only to find it had been ripped off, with its seal hanging flimsily.

A sprinkle of yellow-stained sunlight tiptoed gently on her face like a ballerina. The open window welcomed a calm breeze which brushed across her face as light as a feather.

The quarantine had left her bored to the core. The busy and large city had become as small as her own home. Her mother had said constantly that laying on the couch was the perfect way to get bored.

Abruptly, the irritating sound of her mother’s voice leaped into her ears from the kitchen. This was followed by the creek of the door which echoed through the room, stinging Lily’s ears.

She carefully opened the note, noticing its bold creases and rough edges. Shining it towards a trail of sunlight seeping through the window, it read…

Dear Ophelia, my only sister, I write this in tears, Time has passed rather slowly and dreadfully the past few days. Take the road less travelled and discover a glorious view across the hinterland where you’ll fall in love with the Sunshine Coast all over again.

I

f ever there was a lookout on the Sunshine Coast that flies under the radar, this is it. Hidden within the northeastern pocket of Mapleton National Park, Point Glorious Lookout offers up postcard perfect views.

Cooloolabin Dam sits to the west of Yandina and, like Point Glorious Lookout, it’s remote location has allowed it to remain crowd-free. With shoreline fishing, a lovely nature trail that loops alongside the dam, and a grassy expanse where you can spread a picnic blanket, it’s a delightful destination to while away the afternoon.

Capturing the rolling green hills of the hinterland all the way across to the coast, the expansive views from Point Glorious are enough to make you fall in love with the Sunshine Coast all over again.

A short but sweet nature trail weaves through bushland adjacent to the dam. A multi-use track, hikers can spot birdlife while enjoying intermittent glimpses of the dam, while mountain bikers will revel in the twists and turns along the way.

Unlike others around the coast, there’s nothing fancy about Point Glorious Lookout. There’s no epic mountain to climb for the view, no coastal scene and no ancient mountain range to gasp at. It’s as understated as they come.

Somewhat of a secret road trip, this is not an area of Mapleton National Park many would think to venture down. But if you do, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most glorious views in the hinterland and a beautiful sanctuary where you can stretch your legs en-route to the rest of the hinterland.

A no-frills lookout that’s stripped back to the essentials; a beautiful place to sit and relish in a glorious landscape.

To get here a 4WD vehicle is best. A bumpy track climbs through bushland strewn with towering Eucalyptus haemastoma trees, more commonly known as scribbly gum. It’s a pleasant drive that takes you all the way from Eerwah Vale to a remote part of Yandina, with Point Glorious Lookout a detour along the way.

Once you’re done taking in the sweeping views at Point Glorious, continue on towards Yandina where you’ll find another under-the-radar gem of the hinterland: Cooloolabin Dam.

How to get there: From Eumundi, take Eumundi Kenilworth Road towards Kenilworth turning left onto Buckby Road.

Follow the dirt road until you see a sign for Point Glorious Lookout. To get to Cooloolabin Dam, continue down Buckby Road towards Yandina and turn right onto Cooloolabin Road where you can park at the dam’s Day Use Area.

An end to kitty toilet problems

High school hits the food jackpot!

We like to cover every angle in our Food Drink Dine pages, from restaurants and cafes, to stalls and special outdoor events, but we rarely get the chance to share a story like this one! Thanks to the parents who contacted us - it’s great to sing the praises of someone who makes delicious, nutritious food for the younger generations in our community.

“I also think It’s important to have healthy, fresh food in a school environment.

Especially in high school, as the kids have a lot on their shoulders, I like to support their nutritional needs. I also like to make sure the prices are affordable too,” Sharyn explains.

haryn Kennedy is a self-confessed foodie and her most recent venture as the Maleny State High School Canteen Convenor follows a varied career that includes running cafes, restaurants and hotels.

As a past Maleny High School student and having lived within the hinterland community off and on for most of her life, Sharyn feels she has a good understanding of the diverse tastes of the student body.

Having run the canteen previously under the P & C, when the opportunity arose to take the canteen on as a private business, Sharyn jumped at the chance. Now it is her own venture; she knows the rewards she will reap at the end of the week, knowing she has provided good value in quality, home style food.

“Maleny is such a diverse community so catering to everyone’s needs is important to me. So far, the changes have been really well received. Just lots of homemade, really fresh food. We are adding a range of delicious and healthy salad bowls and wraps to the menu now for summer,” Sharyn says excitedly.

“I have always been in hospitality on and off. I have managed a couple of restaurants and hotels in Brisbane, and I had my own café up in Coolum about ten years ago.

“It’s not hard to make nice, quality homestyle food, which is my goal, to offer that choice. The response has been phenomenal. I can’t believe how much support I’ve gotten from the kids and the teaching staff. I’m feeding so many of the teachers!” she laughs.

“I am catering for vegetarian and gluten-free dietary needs which can always be preordered. The kids (and staff!) know that whatever they get from the canteen, it will be good,” Sharyn says confidently.

Sharyn encourages the kids to try something they haven’t eaten before and to be more adventurous foodwise.

“I love the kids and getting to know them all by name. I love the banter - they are awesome kids.

“I have also worked outside of hospitality, but something always brings me back to it. Usually, a really good opportunity crops up, and I just go with it,” she laughs.

“I just love good food. I’ve always loved entertaining and feeding people. I wanted to share my love of good food with the kids.

“We are doing breakfast, and both lunches every day, so the kids have lots of opportunities to get something yummy. But I also enjoy the flexibility of working for myself.

“At least 85% of the food on offer is made here. The bolognaise and butter chicken are my recipes and clear favourites. I also take the opportunity to make seasonal changes to the menu. I am using some of the produce from the school agriculture department like eggs, beans, potatoes and beetroot.

“I would like to be able to include some hospitality students in the future. Now that the canteen is a registered kitchen there are opportunities for growth in outside catering. Which is where students might be able to learn and develop real world hospitality skills,” explains Sharyn.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this enterprise continue to grow. I get really excited about setting new menu items and using fresh, seasonal produce. It’s full-on, but it’s fun too. I love working ten minutes from home and being back in the Maleny community again,” Sharyn concludes.

From face-painting to make-your-own slime and more, there’ll be crafty activities galore at the River School Spring Fair.

River School Spring Fair You’re in for a treat at Maleny’s River School Spring Fair on Saturday October 23, with live local music, entertainment, stalls and activities running from 10am to 3pm.

Year 6 students will help to host games on the oval for all ages and there’ll be a dunk-the-teacher experience.

Get hands-on with poi twirling; make your own jewellery and slime; or chill in the reading corner and colouring zone.

P&F President, Ross Doherty, says a team of dedicated helpers have organised an affordable day of fun for the whole community.

“We’ll have a range of delicious sentient foods available, amazing coffee and our Year 4 and 5 students will be selling homemade lemonade,” Ross says.

The neohumanist River School is set in a beautiful rainforest valley and caters for 160 students between its Primary School and Early Childhood Centre.

Ann Donoghoe, who has been the principal for four years, and with the school for 24, looks forward to explaining the school’s heart-centred approach during a tour at 11am.

A blossoming project Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance is a group of local residents and avid gardeners with a joint interest in the beautification of Maleny and, in particular, Maple Street and the Riverside Centre for the benefit of both locals and visitors alike.

Planning is in progress to erect hanging baskets and place tubs of flowers along Maple Street, Riverside Centre, the Bridge, Maleny Hotel and the RSL. It is also envisaged that the Maple Street roundabout would be planted out to add some much-needed colour and visual impact to the entrance of Maleny.

Consultation is currently in progress with the Sunshine Coast Council, Main Roads and various other interested parties to allow this exciting new venture to move forward.

The topic is Stolen Wages, where they will explore the long history of Indigenous people in Queensland having their wages taken and ‘held in trust’ by government authorities, and their efforts to receive compensation for lost earnings. Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club T

he Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club was established in December 1992 for automotive enthusiasts to share memories, ideas and fellowship while indulging their appreciation of fine automobiles from throughout history.

The Club is based in the precinct of the Maleny Historical Society, and currently has 147 members, with 259 vehicles on the Club Classic Register, representing 64 marques.

“The range is impressive,” said Club President Graham Bailey, “typified by veteran replicas, vintage American tourers and roadsters, pre-WW2 classics, British and European marques of the 1950's to 80's, and Australian icons.”

Many Club vehicles are operated under the ‘Special Interest’ registration scheme for affordable registration of cars used for historic and automobile club purposes.

This limits their use to Club-organised excursions and regulates safe operation on public roads.

“It is with a great degree of satisfaction that our members restore and preserve these special cars, rather than the alternative of such history being scrapped,” said Graham.

“We have a busy annual social calendar, vehicle displays, and regular excursions to venues within a 150 km radius of Maleny,” Graham continued.

The year's program includes monthly Sunday rallies, midweek rallies, hosting events at the clubhouse, and a monthly social breakfast at a local restaurant.

“The Club takes part in several community events throughout the year,” Graham shared, “Australia Day celebrations, the ANZAC Day Street Parade, static displays at local schools, historical days at Pattemore House and the Maleny Show. Our fundraising efforts throughout the year benefit local charities.

“There is a strong social atmosphere in the Club,” added Graham, “and the annual Open Day in conjunction with the Historical Society and the Men’s Shed attracts plenty of community participation!”

The upcoming Montville Country Run in October will be a major community promotional event, starting on Friday October 8 with registration, rally pack info and nibbles and(non-alcoholic) drinks.

Saturday October 9 begins with breakfast at 7am, followed by a drive to Mapleton, then Eudlo for lunch; the afternoon takes in the Maleny Historical Village, and a themed dinner in the evening at Tranquil Park, with trophies, awards and a raffle.

Sunday October 10 is another 7am breakfast followed by a drive to Beerwah for morning tea and then to Pattemore House, Maleny, for a car display, guided tour and lunch. The run entry fee is $50 per vehicle, and the food fee for the weekend is $100 per person.

ork to improve safety and efficiency along the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast, the region’s largest ever infrastructure project, is now

complete.

The $932 million project has seen the Bruce Highway upgraded to six lanes between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway, including major upgrades to both interchanges and a new two-way service road for local traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive.

State Member for Nicklin, Rob Skelton, said the Bruce Highway upgrade - Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway - also created an important active transport corridor.

“The Palaszczuk Government wants to keep Queenslanders healthy and safe, and that’s why we’re

encouraging more active transport options,” Mr Skelton said.

“As part of this project we’ve delivered more than nine kilometres of new active transport infrastructure for people walking and riding bikes.

“This will encourage more people to hit the pavement and jump on the bike to get to their destination.”

CHOIR OVERCOMES ADVERSITY Maleny’s Inspiration Project Choir has overcome COVID restrictions and lockdowns to be in a position to present The Messiah later this month.

According to Kim Kirkman, the music director, it hasn’t been easy. “We had about seven weeks of being unable to meet in person, so I used Zoom to teach the parts,” said Kim. “Zoom rehearsals tend to polarise singers. Some enjoy it and some don’t. We have lost a few of our singers along the way, but we will be fielding a choir of at least 45,” said Kim. The choir will be presenting Handel’s masterpiece with orchestra and professional soloists. They will also be performing at Baroque pitch, which is a semitone lower than current pitch.

“Performing a little lower is more stylistically authentic, but the real reason we do it is that it makes it easier to sing,” joked Kim. “But it plays havoc with those instruments that have set pitches such as trumpets. They have to play in some very odd keys.”

Wayne Smith has been a practising freelance artist for the past 30 + years with a broad range of experience from solo shows through to venue theming, murals and public art. He completed his formal arts studies at Queensland College of Art gaining a Degree in Fine Art. His recent move to the Sunshine Coast has resulted in the development of the two current streams of work with themes relating to earth and water. In the landscape inspired works the image field moves from abstract pattern fields through to more representational techniques.

The use of bold dark line work reminiscent of woodblock prints combined with fluid painterly techniques is original and unique and invokes a romanticised other worldly element with colour, form and line generating mood and intensity.

In contrast the water themed work is inspired by his love of surf and the ocean. There is a calming sensuousness to these fluid forms with the changing colours tones and textures that move from subterranean depths up through the light and water column. Much of this work is also inspired by the experience of snorkelling over coral with its myriad forms and colour variations.

These works come out of a deep commitment to his practice and a desire to share with others visual forms that are inspired by the natural world and elements within it. He believes bringing such nature inspired imagery into the home or business allows us to honour our connection with it.

Letters Covid exposes other issues

Thanks Victoria for a really great September edition.

I particularly enjoyed the article from Doug Patterson who looked at the reasons why many members of our community find it hard to trust Government decisions and promises.

So sad that people trust information on social media platforms more than from politicians, believing unsubstantiated information, contrary to our best scientific and health advice.

Australia has long been at the forefront of scientific research. Many of our brightest go overseas to study, some staying there for funding support from Foreign Governments and private corporations they don’t receive in OZ. Commercial development and production could provide enormous employment benefits to Australia but small minded penny pinching restrains our economic potential.

LNP Governments claim to be superior economic managers but we are yet to see evidence of that. Instead, delivery bungling and political corruption is their modus operandi with ministers believing they are unaccountable to us.

Perhaps the most serious is the failures of the NBN roll-out as Richard Proudfoot outlines in his excellent September letter to the editor. The NLP promised a better, cheaper plan for that essential infrastructure but the inadequacies are huge, the cost blowout enormous and nobody in government is taking responsibility for this national disgrace, with regional communities again overlooked in favour of large cities.

Maleny Pathways Group want to thank the wonderful people of Maleny who completed the survey called ‘Getting Around Maleny Without a Car’. We received over 2000 detailed comments from over 400 people. A report analysing survey responses will be presented back to the community, as well as to Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Initial results of the survey indicate that it’s not uncommon for people to feel unsafe when getting around Maleny without a car. There also appears to be a great need for existing pathways to be connected.

We have been advised by Council that if you have safety concerns, it is important to contact the Council Customer Service Centre by phone and report the incident on 54757272 or 1300 007272.

The importance of breast cancer screening

ctober is national breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Australia, and will affect around 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. It accounts for over a quarter of all cancer diagnoses in women.

The majority of breast cancers, if detected at an early stage, are highly curable and have an excellent prognosis. Robust screening programs have been developed, with mammogram and ultrasound screening advised for all women between the ages of 50-74.

Screening is effective, an essential part of women’s health checks, and ultimately saves lives. Unfortunately, when breast cancer is detected at later stages, there is a significant drop-off on survival, despite great advances in management.

Over the last year and a half, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted on screening programs, with intermittent pausing of BreastScreen Australia services in several states, and reduced services.

It is important to plan to keep up with screening recommendations as much as possible. Currently, screening programs are continuing in Queensland, so it's important that if you are feeling well, that you keep up-to-date with your screening.

Self-examination also has an important part to play in early detection. If you have any concerning symptoms – new breast lump, pain, swelling or redness, changes to the nipple or nipple discharge, you should get in contact with your General Practitioner and book an examination and further investigation.

The majority of breast cancers, if detected at an early stage, are highly curable.

If you have a family history of breast cancer, have a discussion with your General Practitioner about how this affects recommendations for screening and surveillance.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate?

However, one person infected with the Delta strain can infect about five-to-nine others. This causes the rapid and often difficult to control outbreaks we are currently seeing across the globe.

eople often ask me if I, as a doctor, have been vaccinated against COVID-19. The answer is yes and so have my wife and children. The reason for taking this decision as a family is that we wanted to take control of our health and help our children live their lives without having to worry about the serious consequences of COVID.

The symptom range of infections with the Delta strain also includes gastro symptoms, and the strain infects a wider demographic of people. Those who are pregnant have a higher risk of severe illness from COVID and their babies are at risk of being born prematurely.

The pandemic will eventually get better, but it may get worse first. As the vaccination rates are rising, we will reach a point when the borders open. This has positives, such as regaining some of our freedom, but it will also bring the Delta strain into Queensland and the hinterland - if it hasn’t already arrived via other routes.

Even though no vaccine provides perfect protection, the COVID vaccines are very effective against severe outcomes.

Does vaccination protect against long COVID? Some of the long-term effects of an infection with COVID are loss of smell, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and brain fog. Vaccination reduces the risk of these long COVID symptoms.

What will this mean for you? That depends on whether you are vaccinated or not. If you have had both doses of any of the COVID-vaccines, you are very well protected - over 90% - from becoming severely unwell and needing intensive care or hospital admission because of COVID infection.

It is good news that you can now take action to protect yourself and your loved ones: there are many GP practices and pharmacies, including in the hinterland, offering a choice of different COVID-19 vaccines.

The vaccines are safe, and although vaccinated people may occasionally still get infected, these ‘breakthrough’ infections are rare and more likely to have very little symptoms.

Unfortunately, if you are not vaccinated and the borders open, the risk of intensive care admission is about eleven times higher. This is why some are expecting a pandemic of the unvaccinated. This is indeed what we are seeing in other states and overseas; most seriously unwell people have not or not completely been vaccinated.

When - not if - the Delta strain comes to Queensland, this will have serious consequences. The ‘R0’ of previous COVID-19 strains was about two, meaning that one infected person could infect two unvaccinated people.

he Chi Hub Nambour is the creation of Trent and Teagan Banyan of ‘High on Chi’ and opened mid August after five months of renovations to an historic 110-year-old property on Blackall Terrace.

The intention is to be the Sunshine Coast’s premium holistic wellness hub. “The hub is a conscious collective of healing therapies, workshops and events to support the community to thrive,” shared Teagan.

The Nambour Chi Hub is home to 15 therapists, regular yoga, meditation and sound healings. On the weekends, the Chi Hub’s 5 Element event room is open for casual hire.

“Outside we have a workshop area and a Zen Mindfulness Walk to relax and integrate after a session,” continued Teagan. “Inside the Chi Hub there are five therapy rooms called Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

to help in the recovery of the endangered Southern Pink Underwing Moth (Phyllodes imperialis smithersi), which is threatened due to land clearing and rainforest fragmentation and is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, invasive species and fire.

Our project aims to work with landholders to diversify rainforest seed collections and plantings, improve and extend the range of habitat for endangered species (with a particular focus on the Southern Pink Underwing Moth), and build rainforest resilience through increased weed management and quality revegetation activities.

The grant is a wonderful boost for Barung and its members as it is enabling us to expand our native plant nursery so we can propagate more native rainforest plants, deliver more educational workshops and programs, and take a more coordinated approach to threatened species recovery.

he Blue Banded Bee (Amegilla) is a Native Australian Solitary Bee. They do not run in colonies nor do they produce honey!

Barung Landcare has been successful in securing a Landcare-led Bushfire Recovery grant to deliver a rainforest resilience and threatened species project as part of the 111 projects funded by the Australian Government under this program.

Moth, will focus on working with local landholders who are actively involved in, or just starting out their journey in, restoring and looking after rainforest vegetation across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

With over 75% of rainforest and vine forests in the Sunshine Coast region found on private land, landholders can play a vital role in the recovery and survival of many species in this region.

An especially exciting element of the project is a partnership with the scientific team at Natura Pacific

Landholders will have access to a range of educational workshops and field days that will cover topics such as native plant identification, seed collection and plant propagation, rainforest restoration, bush regeneration and fire management. The project will also include environmental film nights, and rainforest revegetation activities with free native rainforest plants available to landholders who take up works as part of the project.

Climate Y Action Now

ou may start noticing yellow and black 'Climate Action Now' stickers adorning garden fences, shop windows and wheelie bins along the streets of the hinterland, the coast and between.

This comes from the work of long-time hinterland resident Dr Barry Traill, who, working with the Qld Conservation Council and the Australian Conservation Foundation, has helped print signs and car stickers with this signmessage to distribute to anyone who would like to display on their property.

Barry works for Climate Action Network Australia, and is also a volunteer with the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade and an environmental scientist, who has spent decades working with land managers around Australia.

t’s another beautiful day on the Maleny plateau, and we are enjoying our first bit of rain after the dry season.

It’s been a great time to get on top of weeds, and things that you cut back stay cut back. But look out! The growing season is upon us! What can you expect? Well, because of our incredibly fertile soil and unusually high rainfall, most tree species put on between one and two metres of growth vertically and on both sides laterally in the next six months.

This is what causes trees in Maleny to grow three times or more than the height predicted on the Nursery label when you buy the little tiny pot plant.

While it is so important to have trees around our homes for beauty, habitat for wildlife, wind protection, sun protection and general harmony, it is also important to keep them safe.

This generally involves controlling the size of the tree to prevent them falling, or if they do fall, to prevent them from hitting your home.

We have been finessing our pruning style to the point where the way we are controlling the growth of the trees is basically real life bonsai.

The results are amazing, and it is deeply satisfying to work with these seemingly timeless organisms in the picturesque gardens that abound in our area.

Recent polling found that a clear majority of Australians in all regions want faster action on our warming climate. “Fortunately, we can now transition away from polluting coal and gas to new industries and jobs based on cheaper renewable energy,” said Barry.

The simple sign idea came from a conversation Barry had with the NSW Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean last year. Matt, a Liberal Party Minister, pointed out to Barry that "It's what people are thinking, but we need to make it more visible, we need to see it on the streets."

By placing a sign on your front fence, car, bin or window, you can show others and your members of Parliament that you want faster action to stop the warming of our climate.

Watch out for wildlife

s the weather starts to warm up with spring setting in, another season also begins - Trauma Season, as it’s referred to by wildlife care authorities such as Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

The heat and drier climate brings animals out into the open searching for water; youngsters are leaving the care of their parents to find their own territory and for the mature animals, mating season has arrived.

Traffic collisions rise, as roaming wildlife often cross busy roads to travel between habitats.

It’s good to be particularly cautious as you drive at night around forested areas.

Please keep some basic supplies in your car – all you really need is a box, a towel and perhaps some gloves to rescue an injured animal and transport it to the nearest vet or wildlife hospital.

Bees and wasps are rubbed against the perch to remove the stings and venom glands, then beaten before being eaten.

Ferocious! They have even been known to eat prey as large as their own head.

Rainbow bee-eaters nest in “loose colonies” of up to 50 mated-for-life pairs, but some prefer to nest solitary. Both parents dig a long tunnel, up to 1.6 metres deep with a nesting chamber lined with grass at the end. Nests can be found along sandy banks of creeks, rivers and dams, sometimes using man-made structures like roadside cuttings, gravel pits and quarries.

This strikingly beautiful bird can be identified by its green and orange head, red eye set in a black stripe which is edged by a thin blue line, green and blue back and under parts, long curved bill and a pair of tail streamers.

The Rainbow Bee-eater

The males have longer, thinner tail steamers than the female, otherwise they look the same. Bee-eaters are found in all parts of Australia except for desert areas and Tasmania. After migrating north to over-winter, sometimes travelling as far as Indonesia, they return to their breeding sites between August and November.

Wildlife specialists such as myself and many other groups are happy to provide assistance if you are not confident or lack the materials to perform a rescue - don’t be afraid to call! This is particularly the case with bats, it cannot be emphasised highly enough that you should not ever touch any bats.

Sadly, Rainbow Bee-eaters have shown a marked decline on the east coast, with reporting rates down by over 50% since 2001. Some of their biggest threats include foxes, dogs and cats.

Stillness brings great reward

I

was having a good day. At Ewen Maddock Dam, I had been watching a White-bellied Sea Eagle eating a fish on top of a tall post in mid-water. It was being harried by a hovering Whistling Kite which applied its species’ well known distract-and-snatch tactics. They failed: and the eagle fed on unperturbed.

It was by the Mary River that it happened. I had stood in one spot for some time and my mind had wandered. Lodged in shaded water, close to the bank, was a half-sunken tree branch. Suddenly, I realised that I was looking at a Bush Hen standing on this log.

I had stood still, enthralled by this, for a considerable time, when I noticed a small, brown bird fussing in the bottom of a rush tussock at the water’s edge, about a metre from my feet. This was a Little Grassbird – a secretive resident of wetlands.

Careless movement and human voices serve to separate us from the natural world and what it might reveal.

It is not only snakes that take secrecy and aversion to human company to highly anxious levels. I had almost given up any hope of seeing a Pale-vented Bush Hen – a bird that, unlike its Moorhen cousin, sems incapable of tolerating our presence. Its loud calls are often heard, but its movements and behaviour are an enigma.

It continuously flicked its tail in nervous agitation, turned its head to look one way then another and took quick, feverish steps in different directions, before dashing out of sight under riverside bushes, for no apparent reason. This bird was grey, unglamorous and, to the eye of an unexpecting birder, wholly wonderful.

Careless movement, distraction of mind, indifference and, worst of all, the intrusion of human voices all serve to separate us from the natural world and what it might reveal. Stillness can be hard to achieve.

Yet, if you can manage it occasionally, it might just make your day.

The species is not rare – and its call, ‘p-pee-pee’, is familiar – but all we usually see (if we are lucky) is a swift flight low across the water’s surface, from one tussock to the next, where it dives into hiding among the stems. This bird had not recognised me because I was still.

oreLogic’s inaugural Million Dollar Markets report for 2021 has identified 218 markets where either house or unit median values in a suburb reached the million-dollar-mark.

Eliza Owen, CoreLogic’s Head of Research Australia, says “Australia’s current housing boom has led to property value increases, pushing a more vast range of markets up to, and beyond, the million dollar mark.

Queensland is the only state where the combined regionals have a similar number of million-dollar suburbs to its capital city. There are 51 suburbs across Brisbane with a median house value of at least $1m, compared to 46 house and unit markets across regional Queensland, driven by the popularity of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

A Planned Transition

I

recently attended a Montville Village Association meeting where Dr. Barry Traill, a Maleny environmental scientist, was the guest speaker. It was informative to hear about the latest issues in Australia’s response to global warming.

However, what caught my attention was a case study he reported on which concerned a ‘planned transition from fossil fuels energy generation to renewable energy generation’, for a mining community in Spain, and it was compared with an unplanned transition for a mining community in the USA. The first provided workers with alternative work pathways while the second resulted in violent protest and unemployment and the ultimate destruction of a once vibrant community.

I haven’t heard the notion of a planned transition from fossil fuel generation to renewable energy generation seriously discussed in the Australian political environment.

Labour talks generally about the transfer of employable skills from one sector to the other, the Libs don’t want to know and the Nats only seem to care about compensation for farmers.

None of our political leaders seemed to have addressed the issue that there is a highly skilled and productive fossil fuel-based workforce that can, and must, be part of the transition.

As the cost of energy production shifts from fossil fuel to alternative, renewable sources the future of coal miners and those who support the mining industry is dire. The alternatives for them are really laid out in Dr. Traille’s case study. We can ostracise and demonise them and pay them benefits to become social pariahs or we can recognise the value of their skills and harness them in worthwhile, nation building projects.

Perhaps the last nation building project was the Snowy Mountains Scheme of the 1950s, but we have a number in the wings that workers in the fossil fuel industry are ideally placed to undertake.

Projects like the inland rail line through Victoria, western New South Wales and western Queensland immediately come to mind.

Others might include the upgrading of our national highways to support and service electric powered vehicles; the provision of alternative north-south highways for heavy,

commercial vehicles to take the pressure of existing networks that service both industry and tourist traffic; and the better management of water resources.

Those working in the mining industry have the skills to work in major infrastructure projects for the national good. Not only that, they have the fly-in, fly-out, can-do work ethic to work in isolated, hostile environments to get the job done.

We just can’t afford to waste the hundred thousand plus mining-based work force to inept party politics that would consign them to the dump.

We can pay them the miserly job-seeker benefit to ignore/deny their worth or we could acknowledge and recognise their value and employ them to begin the rebuilding of our national transportation network for the twenty-first century.

It does seem to be a no-brainer, so one has to wonder why none of our political leaders has stepped up to address how we can plan a transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy that keeps those in the mining industry a productive part of Australia’s environmentally sustainable future.
