egular HT readers will notice some changes to our usual content for May – not surprising really, as we (like many others) are having to adapt to circumstances. We still have our popular features for you, business stories, arts information, and Food Drink Dine has a list of takeaway services across the hinterland. We also have the announcement of the 2020 Hinterland Times Young Writer of the Year competition – a chance for younger people to express themselves and win a cash prize, book voucher, HT front cover and have their short story published! There are even three Barista training courses with Montville Coffee, valued at $235 each! Turn to page 19 for more details.

I have been hearing lovely isolation ideas over the last month: two friends have started‘storytime’online, entertaining any kids who are keen to be read to; another mum is creating black and white photos of people ‘in iso’ on their doorsteps; others are doing ‘pop-up’ yoga classes online; one dad built a treehouse for his kids, another has been hand-painting plant pots, and one family has created a community noticeboard for her street (page 38).

It’s heartening to hear these positive stories, and with Mother’s Day coming up, it’s a great time to be really creative: paint Mum a picture, write her a poem, make some jewellery, create a home video message, make a photo montage of special moments and frame it… (Treat Mum to a delicious takeaway meal or scrumptious pastries from one of our listed cafes!)

I’ll sign off this month with the poignant closing paragraph of an opinion piece written by my old friend and boss, John Bird, for The Big Issue newspaper.

Another thing that lifted my spirits was finding a Facebook page called The Kindness Pandemic – in times like these, it is a tonic to read of so many people with generous hearts out there – and I know we have a great deal across the hinterland.

"If we have learned something, or are learning as I write, it is how we so dearly need each other. And how we so need to understand that life is a series of social echoes as we pass through time. That everything we do has a relationship to many more people than we think. And that one person's vulnerability is a chance for us to prove our humanity. Aiding people to get through life and have a better one brings out the best in us."

nce again, we are running a dedicated page for local businesses to share their details and services during this tricky time.

Everyone is trying to cope as best they can, and we are all trying to support one another, while also staying afloat. Even at the HT, we have had to pause some of our usual pages: Travels With…, Creative Cuts, and the Market Profile, and we really look forward to the time when our hinterland is buzzing with activity once again and we can share all this with our readers. In the meantime, let’s keep positive and work together to keep our community connected and our businesses in business! unshine Troupe, a non-profit organisation, was formed in 2009 with support from the Compass Institute Inc. to provide opportunities for participation in the performing arts for adults with disabilities.

Allycia was born with a rare chromosomal condition – a deletion on the 18th chromosome and had open heart surgery at nine months of age. Since joining the troupe at age 14, Allycia has blossomed.

Every year, Sunshine Troupe participates in the Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival, taking home two acting awards in 2019. Anywhere Festival and Horizon are other major theatre events they have been involved in.

“I have been able to develop as a professional in the performing arts. Some of my favourite moments with the troupe include performing at the STEPS Grand Winter Ball for the last three years and in the Queen Street Mall for the Global Games in 2019,” she says.

They regularly perform at fundraisers and community events like the STEPS Grand Winter Ball; Compass Hoe Down; Noosa Together; Noosa Alive; and The Global Games Arts and Cultural Program.

Graham Eastwood who has Asperger’s says his involvement with Sunshine Troupe since age 42 has changed his life. “I have been able to get out and about in the community and have done many more things than I would have done if I hadn’t joined the troupe. I have really enjoyed performing in our theatre restaurants and at Noosa Together,” he enthuses.

Veronica Wain, president of Sunshine Troupe and whose daughter Allycia Staples is a troupe member says: “Some of our greatest joy comes from recognition as artists and performers outside our immediate community where the hard work and talent is validated.

Like Graham, Tim Orton was 42 when he joined the Sunshine Troupe. Tim has an acquired brain injury, having

suffered an accident at age six years. He credits the Sunshine Troupe with helping him to remove mental barriers. “I thought I couldn’t do very much and being part of the troupe has helped me to realise that I can do a lot. Before I joined I had been caring for my mum and had become quite introverted even though I am an extrovert. I agree with Graham and Allycia about the performances we have been able to be a part of – they have been amazing.” The shining eyes and wide grins on Allycia, Graham and Tim leave no doubt that each loves performing, as does the entire eight-member troupe. This year, they began training with Cindy Darabi, a trained circus performer, who established Sylph Circus in Maleny 2011. The opportunity was initiated by Sunshine Troupe’s creative director, Florence Teillet, a veteran community artist with 35 years’ experience. “I became involved in the Sunshine Troupe through invitation by Florence Teillet to teach the troupe members circus skills in order to expand their repertoire as dancers/ performers,” says Cindy. “I’d not worked with intellectually disabled adults before so I didn’t know what to expect. Learning circus skills can be physically challenging and quite confronting for adults but I’ve been impressed by the troupe’s enthusiasm and professional approach. “Each troupe member’s attitude was really warming. They encouraged each other by cheering their successes and supporting the hesitant among the group with words like, ‘You can do this, I believe in you.’ It’s easier to succeed when your team has your back.” It appears that the troupe members weren’t the only ones learning something new. Cindy was in awe of their “lack of self-doubt”.

Sylph Circus Allycia Staples (purple scarf), Graham Eastwood (blue scarf) and Sunshine Troupe members learn to juggle scarves with Sylph Circus

“The main thing I've learned from the Sunshine Troupe was to be bold about self-promotion and sharing your strengths and achievements. In an introductory circle where we each shared who we were and expressed our past achievements, I struggled somewhat ... whereas the Sunshine Troupe members were very bold and eager to share their strengths with generosity. It was a real ‘ah-ha’ moment for me.” During the training, some of the skills Allycia, Graham, Tim and the rest of the troupe have been learning include how to juggle scarves; work hula hoops; the aerial ring; and the ‘teardrop’ – a suspended silk sling. Behind the scenes, the Sunshine Troupe would not exist without the sheer dedication of the members’ parents, support from RADF and the Dalwood Wylie Foundation. Florence and Veronica are the driving forces who are rightfully proud of the troupe’s achievements. “Members have really pushed themselves and have found a lot of satisfaction in challenging themselves. They have been showing improvement with every training session,” beams Florence.

When asked about where they would like to be performing in two years’ time, the trio showed no Florence Teillet, Allycia Staples, Michael Beh (adjudicator), Veronica Wain lack of ambition, citing with their awards at the 2019 Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival a variety of events and destinations ranging from Australian agricultural shows to the stages of New York. It sounds like Sunshine Troupers are setting the bar high! If you are interested in having the Sunshine Troupe perform at your event or fundraiser, contact Veronica Wain on 0433 433 204.

Matthew Clark shoots for gold

Montville has a champion living right under its nose, but Matthew Clark goes about disguised as a high school student.

by JACQUI HENSEL

A

t just 14 years old Matthew has already represented Australia twice in his chosen sport of archery. Along with his family, mum Cassie, big sister Annabelle and his dad Peter Clark, who is the Queensland State Archery coach, he has a brilliant support team and a bright future in his sport. At his club of Samford Valley Target Archers (Brisbane) he has been mentored by another Australian archery champ, Trevor Clark, who represented Australia in the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Trevor, who isn’t technically related to Matthew’s family, has been quick to adopt both Matthew and Peter as the trio frequently stand on podiums together at the end of a shooting match. All photos by “One in each age Cassie Clark group!” Matthew cheekily explains. “Me in the Intermediates, Dad in the Open and Trevor in the Veteran Division.”

Archery has been a part of Peter’s life for as long as he can remember. He grew up with bow hunting, however target archery was the sport he adopted whilst studying Engineering at CQU. Now the Maths, Science and Engineering teacher is passing the baton on to Matthew, who is going forward in archery in leaps and bounds. As a child with Aspergers, Matthew brings strengths to the sport of archery such as his ability to remain

focused and intensely engaged in a chosen activity. Originally, Matthew’s mum Cassie thought archery would be a good way to work on gross motor skills, as Matthew has a Dysfunctional Coordination Disorder, making it difficult for him to catch a ball. Matthew has excelled at his sport far beyond what either of his parents expected of him and they are incredibly proud of his achievements. “My first Trans-Tasman in 2018 was so much fun. It was my first international competition and I earned a

bronze medal. It made me feel like I really was good at something,” Matthew says, smiling.

Matthew and his dad, Peter, target practice in the shed

“Then the next one was in New Zealand and I won gold there in the individual, silver in the pair and bronze in the mixed pair competition.” “Matthew is currently ranked No1 in SQAS in Intermediate Division (South East Qld) and exited Club Division Nationally ranked No 1 in all four categories (Indoor, Outdoor, Field and Clout),” dad, Peter, says proudly. “It has taken a lot of work for Matthew to achieve these results, but he has persevered. It helps that he really enjoys what he is doing and is always seeking to make improvements.” However, it is the unconditional support Matthew receives from other club members that makes his success all the sweeter. “Matthew has learned so much from archery,” Peter explains, “he is so much more confident in social situations now. That was something he struggled with. “He enjoys his sport and mixing with a wide range of people from all ages and walks of life. It is more than we could have ever expected, that level of acceptance of him, just as he is. “When Matthew came back to Australia with his gold medal in hand, he told us he was ready for a new challenge and broader horizons! He wanted to change to recurve and prove to himself he has a true craft of archery,” Peter shares with obvious pleasure. Matthew will remain part of the Queensland High Performance squad for compound archery but would like to compete in recurve. Therefore, Matthew has been practising with his recurve bow for two months, showing promising form and securing his position on the Queensland State team. As the current record holder for many State and National Archery records, Matthew has been keen to move into more serious competition pathways and the recurve bow offers more opportunity for international competition, including the Commonwealth and Olympic games, which are pathways Matthew is keen to explore.

Matthew Clark

“Patience and repetition are my main strengths and I enjoy this aspect of training,” Matthew says. This makes the constant practise required by the sport much less onerous. He also doesn’t seem to get nervous at competitions as he focuses on the task completely. He is also a very good shot. “I always hit the target with the compound bow, now with the recurve bow I am still learning. Last outing, I lost one arrow and broke another one!” You get the feeling Matthew isn’t letting his new bow get the better of him. Instead he will be out there practising to ensure his posture and alignment are spot on to make him a formidable opponent in f uture matches. “It has been a big change. And the way you use the bow is totally different. With a compound bow you pull it back and lock it into place. Whereas with the recurve bow it relies more on your shoulder strength,” Matthew explains. Due to coronavirus concerns the Nationals that were to be held at Easter will be delayed by a few months. However, Matthew will be sure to use the extra time to continue to master his new recurve bow.

TIPS FOR LANDLORDS OF RETAIL PREMISES - PART 1 As a landlord of commercial premises it is important to identify what business your tenant will be carrying out from your premises so that you can prepare a lease that will comply with the requirements of the relevant act involved. In Queensland commercial leases generally speaking come under two distinct areas; the first being retail shops which are governed by the Retail Shop Leases Act and the second being non retail shops governed by provisions of the Property Law Act. I shall concentrate my discussion on leases that come under the Retail Shop Leases Act.

The

Historyof

When negotiating with your prospective tenant these are some important tips to keep in mind: • DISCLOSURE – both you and your tenant must provide disclosure in the particular format provided by the Retail Shop Leases Regulations. As a landlord your disclosure must be in the form of a Lessor Disclosure Statement annexing a copy of the lease. The Lessor Disclosure Statement gives information about the lease such as the term of the lease, the option periods available, the rental payable, whether bond is payable etc. Importantly note that this information must be given to the tenant at least seven days before the parties enter into the Lease otherwise the tenant will be at liberty to terminate the lease at any time within the next six month period. • YOUR TENANT also has to provide you with disclosure to. In the Lessee Disclosure Statement the tenant gives you disclosure of way of a Lessee Disclosure Statement as well proof of both legal and financial advice from their accountant and lawyer in a Financial Advice Report and a Legal Advice Report to say that they have been advised of their legal obligations as a lessee and had the financial implications of the tenancy explained. • TERM AND OPTIONS – keep in mind what you want to do with your premises when you negotiate the term and any options (further terms). An example is a lease that has an initial term of three years with two options each of three years’ duration. It is important that you note that legally, as long as your tenant is not in breach, you have to honour the lease for the whole period of time until the end of the second option period – in this case a period of nine years. • EARLY NOTICE OF THE NEW MARKET RENT – prior to exercising the next option in the lease your tenant is entitled to request and be provided with the new market rental amount. In part 2 of this article I shall discuss Notices about option periods, Bond, legal costs and the Tenant as an incorporated entity.

Jim Hooper

A much-loved and respected resident of Montville, Robert James (Jim) Hooper, recently passed away, and Doug Patterson, from the Montville Historical Society, shares some of the interesting chapters of Jim’s life story, which connect to this characterful hinterland village. by DOUG PATTERSON im was born in Somerset, England, the son of Frank and Mary Hooper. He was one of ten children born on the family dairy farm near Cheddar, an area famous for cheese making.

J

Jim wanted to learn the trade of blacksmithing but was needed to help his father on the farm, now growing wheat as directed by the war cabinet. Throughout the ‘40s, he worked on the family farm and took on casual work in the district, saving his money to buy tools and equipment like his first small welder.

A foot-and-mouth outbreak in the middle of the depression made his boyhood extremely tough. All their animals had to be slaughtered and only government compensation kept the family going.

In 1952, he applied for the 10-pound assisted passage to Australia. When he didn’t receive any response, he contacted a shipping company that advised him there was a 3-year waiting list.

A week later he scored a cancellation and was on his way; but it was a first-class berth at a cost of 180 pounds. This made a huge hole in his savings but he wrote that he thoroughly enjoyed the luxury and the seven-course meals at the “Captain’s Table”. It also meant that he could bring his tools and equipment with him. On the voyage he met and befriended George Morris, returning from Sudan where he had served as a missionary. George converted Jim to Christianity and offered him a job on the family’s dairy farm at Gayndah, Queensland. There he met his wife-to-be, George’s sister, Joan. He spent the next four years working on the Morris farm and on a number of cattle properties in western Queensland, learning how to farm in Queensland’s hot, dry conditions. He claimed later that these experiences made him a much wiser man and allowed him to establish a network of contacts throughout western Queensland which became useful when he later established his Montville Engineering business. Jim married Joan outside Gayndah in 1956 and a year later bought an established pineapple farm

on Balmoral Road, Montville, which he named Tutnell after his family farm in Somerset. Tutnell is Saxon for Top-of-the-hill which is where his new farm was. He applied his blacksmithing skills to design and make carryalls, a system attached to the back of the tractor to carry harvested pineapples. Jim realised he was more a blacksmith than a farmer and in 1958, built a workshop at the front of the farm right on the road; Hooper’s Engineering was born. For the next 60 years, Hooper’s Engineering supplied metal fabricated machinery and equipment to farms, properties, mines and mills all over the world; starting with re-conditioned windmills to huge ploughs, scrappers and buckets. Jim became recognised for designing and building customised machinery, including a snow plough for the Australian Antarctic Base. As the machinery got bigger, the welders, presses, lathes and forges also got bigger and the foundry grew to accommodate them. Jim quickly became involved in the Montville Community. Within days of his arrival a serious bush fire broke out. Jim realised that Montville did not have a Bush Fire Brigade and set about rectifying this omission. He helped form this service and served it for 25 years as First Officer and 37 years as Fire Warden. He also served as Secretary of the Montville Progress and Fruit Growers Association; an early community body that much later became the Montville Village Association. While in that position he fought for better roads and a new telephone exchange. As well, Jim served Montville as a JP for many years. Jim was a very committed Christian. He was secretary of the Montville Methodist and Uniting Churches and a lay preacher for 32 years and a Chaplin for Gideon’s International. He served as a missionary in Papua New Guinea on ten different two-month tours where he built airstrips, aircraft hangars, and community infrastructure and spread the word of God. In later life, Jim joined the Nambour Baptist Church. He was a hands-on, practicing churchman who prayed daily and visited members of the community regularly. Jim’s world centred on his God, his family, his community and his business and he served them all well.

OUR SERVICES WILL NOT CHANGE

Everyone is shu ng around us, however MCU is seen as an essen al service so we will stay open if we can. Our hours may be shortened over coming weeks and some mes we may shut at lunch mes to allow our staff to get their break. We want to assure our customers that our services will not change. If our doors are shut during office hours you will s ll reach us on the phone. We are happy to advise that our staff will stay employed during this en re me. If our doors do need to shut we are all set up to work from home on our secured network. The day-to-day running of a financial ins tu on does not stop just because our doors may shut. Of course, we would not be able to do any in-branch banking, such as over-thecounter deposits and withdrawals. However, we are working with those customers that use our branch facili es to ensure they have something in place to meet their needs if this me arises. What is pleasing to us, is that in the last two weeks we have had many new customers join MCU, which is very encouraging and definitely keeping our staff busy. Thank you for suppor ng local!

We wish all our customers and our community the best at this me and we are here to serve you, please do not hesitate to call us 5499 8988 or email us at info@mcu.com.au

Many readers tell us they enjoy our monthly Q&A with a local hinterland business, and this month it’s the turn of Alice Graham from Yandina Art and Framing.

BIZ QUIZ Alice with Eugene at Yandina Art and Framing 

Q A Q

Where did you grow up? I was lucky enough to grow up in gorgeous New Zealand in the cool, crisp area of Lake Taupo and other surrounding beautiful areas. What made you move to the area?

The Sunshine Coast has been home to me for the last four years and (hopefully) for many more to come. I originally moved here from Sydney and immediately loved the slower pace of life. Yandina in particular has such a ‘community’ feel that I associate with a country town type vibe. Very friendly.

A

Q

How long have you been running Yandina Art and Framing? And what did you do before this?

A

I have been running Yandina Art and Framing for three-and-a-half years! My background is varied but has always been of a creative/colour nature.

Q

Do you have any funny/unusual stories from your work?

A

I think of all the interesting and unusual things I have framed over the years and a few of my favourites are an original 2000 Sydney Olympic torch, teddy bears, a piece of Gyprock and my absolute favourite would have to be the 18 individually hand carved miniature Buddha figurines!

Q

What do you enjoy the most about your business?

A

Framing is such a unique and special experience and we are often entrusted with people’s most treasured belongings. We get to hear the stories that make the pieces special and often share a few tears too. But, hands down the most exciting part of our job is the ‘unveiling’. The thing I absolutely love most is seeing our customers reaction at the end result.

Q

What does a 'typical' day entail for you?

Q

If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be?

There is no typical day in the world of framing. That’s one of my favourite things about the industry. We are lucky enough to see a variety of beautiful, inspirational artworks which definitely keep things interesting.

A

Our enduring lesson has been the importance of taking care of every detail and following up with our customers. It has been through “word of mouth” and local publications that we have built up an established following. With the current events, there is no substitute for customer loyalty – particularly local loyalty!

LOCAL BUSINESSES - ADAPTING TO CHANGE “

Ochre Health

R

When the Coronavirus pandemic started, our main concern was to keep everyone safe from the virus,” shared Dr Edwin Kruys, of Ochre Health.

ob and Samantha Outridge purchased the Maleny Supa IGA in 1995 and transformed it into a modern supermarket, but with a traditional country feel. The store is renowned for supporting local community groups and local suppliers, and has been adapting to the current circumstances to help their customers.

“We have changed our service model and are now offering, for example, outdoor influenza vaccinations and Medicare-funded telephone consultations, as well as inperson doctors and nurses visits.

Rob Outridge shared, “It’s like riding a wave for us, a fairly big wave! And we are trying to stay on a surfboard looking ahead to where the next wave might be going.

“Despite all the signage at the entrance and the changed check-in procedure, everyone is very welcome! We have implemented social distancing and stricter hygiene measures to protect patients and staff.” It is a daunting time, but the people in the Sunshine Coast and hinterland have done well and so far, the situation is better than overseas. However, as they say, this is a marathon and not a sprint. “A big risk we are seeing now is that people are avoiding the doctor out of fear and, as a result, are not looking after their general health,” said Dr Kruys. “The last thing we want to see is more unwell people after the pandemic. For that reason, we are encouraging everyone to continue to have screening for important conditions, such as bowel cancer. Make sure vaccinations, including the influenza vaccine are up to date. “Take your medications as prescribed and ensure you stay well with a healthy diet, daily exercise, sufficient sleep and relaxation.” Ask your doctor which check-ups and (screening) tests remain important for you during the pandemic. You can talk to your GP or practice nurse either in person or via a telephone consult. This is the time to really look after your health. Dr Edwin Kruys is a GP at Ochre Health Maleny and Montville, phone 5494 2388 (Maleny) or 5442 9144 (Montville)

Hannah and Rich Hayes of Little May Espresso - image Brodie McGuin

I

Little May Espresso

t has been a little over a month since social distancing changed the face of Little May, in Montville’s Main Street. Overnight Hannah and Rich Hayes, who have owned and run Little May for the past five-and-a-half years, changed their much-loved community hub of delicious food, great coffee and social hot spot into a take away, grab’ n’ go. Determined to continue to serve and connect with the locals that have built Little May into the heart of Montville, Rich and Hannah are serving the same flavours of Little May, with a little extra sweet treat baking, just as a take away version. “The connections we have with our local community are so important at this time of uncertainty,” said Hannah. “The few minutes I spend chatting, laughing, venting with our customers, has made this whole situation bearable, pleasurable even.” Little May has adjusted their opening hours to balance work and income with the care of their two boys who, like many other school students, are learning from home for the time being. Like all of our local businesses we want to see them reopen to full capacity when the time is right, so please, if you can, support Little May with your custom during this very unique time.

“Every day is different. There has been a huge demand for many essential products in our stores. The panic buying began with toilet paper, then pasta and rice, then flour … the system hasn’t fully recovered yet despite the restrictions, which shows how fragile the system is.” The Maleny IGA offers a temporary online service to support customers shopping for basic items as they can use a 'Click and Collect' option from the store. Shopping/order days are now five days a week (Monday to Friday) and the staff are working towards same day pickup depending on order quantities. They also offer a home delivery service for a small fee to an area that encompasses Mapleton, Mount Mellum, Witta and Boroobin. Please call the store after 7am on 5494 2257 to place a phone order, if you would prefer to talk directly with one of the team. “My crew are really amazing,” said Rob. ”They have really stepped up. They say, ‘thanks for my job boss’, as they know how hard it’s been for many people, but they also realise how important their role is in the community as well. They have been there for us, and we really appreciate that.”

Follow them on Instagram and Facebook for daily specials: recent offerings have included vanilla custard eclairs, chocolate and passionfruit Mille-Feuilles or raspberry custard and Nutella brioche scrolls.

The lovely reception team at Ochre Health in Maleny, who are welcoming patients, answering the phones and keeping the practice ticking over!

You can also buy house-made vinaigrette, almond dukkah, tomato relish, artisan bread, fresh eggs, Little May Espresso coffee and the hugely popular ‘Suzie June’ drinking chocolate. Their new trading hours are 7am till 12pm daily (closed Wednesday). Phone: 07 5478 5015.

In the Wild

A

with Spencer Shaw

Gardening in the Era of Covid-19

s the Covid-19 pandemic rolls across the globe and the reality of our vulnerability to diseases without borders sinks in (for some of us...), it’s a good opportunity to remember that not so old saying “think globally but act locally”. By that, I mean we need to have a global outlook - we’re only one earth and we all need to pull together to look after her and to resolve our global problems, but it’s also a good time to consider localising some / many aspects of our economies and high on this list of priorities has got to be growing our own food locally and in-turn looking after this little share of earth that we call home (our true source of all true wealth). And before you ask ... no I’m not having flashbacks to the ‘60’s (born in ‘69’), the Age of Aquarius, peace love and rainbows etc... This is simply how the world works and its about time we grew up and caught up with this... rant over (for now).

In this time of great adversity for the health and wealth of people, it’s heartening to see a few positive outcomes including a strengthening of our local communities (while keeping a respectful distance, of course) through the support of our small businesses at least those who have been able to adapt and stay open.

Anyway, this is supposed to be a promotion of our business of some sort, so time to get off the soap box and fill you in with what we’re up to at Forest Heart ecoNursery during Covid 19. We’ve reduced our hours for this period from 9am-3pm Tuesday to Friday and 9am-2pm on Saturdays.

Another interesting outcome has been the growing interest in self and shared reliance when it comes to growing food and gardening and growing plants in general. Vegetable seedlings have become worth their weight in gold (I wish) or at least their weight in toilet paper (apparently the second most valuable commodity after gold in a global pandemic?)

We operate a clean open air premises and are practising social distancing and increased hygiene practices. We can offer no contact purchasing and delivery options, just visit our web site.forestheart.com.au.

Gardens have never looked so good as the home isolation brings us back into contact with that lovely bit of earth that we call home and we all should be treating it like our own precious little bit of Eden...literally!

We offer the best range of local native plants, cultivars, bush foods, fruit trees, mulches, fertilisers and much more and as of this week were also supplying our own range of vegetable seedlings. So when it comes to pandemic lockdown, don’t panic, just plant-it!

Once the ‘planted forest’ flowers and fruits, natural regeneration can take place. The challenge for the revegetation enthusiast is to decide how many of some species are too much of a good thing.

Because we live in such an ecologically diverse part of the world, there will of course be a lot of variation in soil types, drainage patterns, local rainfall patterns, elevation, past history and much else.

There is plenty to observe, to think about and to learn about our immediate surroundings. We are often busier than we ever were! There is always maintenance; will the weeds ever stop growing?

Tree and shrub choices may be made with an eye on climate change given that larger trees are likely to outlive us, or they are known to attract wildlife to their fruit and/or flowers, or we simply like that particular species.

Established forest thinning. Unlike more tropical rainforest, there is no understorey other than where there is sufficient light for native grasses.

The garden needs attention, whether it’s pruning, preparation for spring flowering or we’ve decided to become self-sufficient in vegetables. A routine for the day is planned, a job list decided and only half of it is achieved. Sound familiar? Who ever had time to go out. We are so fortunate in where we live.

A true survivor has been the Flame Tree, Brachychiton acerifolius, which makes one wonder just how common this tree may have been in the past. It has, however, been recorded right up the east coast as far as Cape York so presumably was always here, but has also been planted in larger gardens and can self-seed.

or many of us, COVID-19 has slowed the pace of life and time has been found for those living on acreage to revisit areas left to do their own thing, sometimes for years. It’s quite fascinating to note the changes, see which previously planted species survived and which have thrived.

On parts of the eastern escarpment, shade from the emerging canopy, combined with reduced moisture levels due to both root competition and at times increased evaporation, have resulted in substantial

By PAUL FRASER oping with housebound boredom during this pandemic can be difficult, especially for families with children. Books, television and Facebook definitely help with this, but after days, and weeks, maybe you’re ready for something new and exciting. Birdwatching, and the keeping of home/yard species lists is something that many Australians have been doing for years, however, the popularity of this activity has significantly increased worldwide since coronavirus has affected the way we live our lives. The message from those who participate in this hobby is universal - it’s fun, inexpensive, educational and highly addictive, in a positive way. So, how do you get started? A good bird book or bird app is essential. The most up-to-date, and most comprehensive Australian bird book is “The Australian Bird Guide” (ABG) published by CSIRO. Another very good one is “The Complete Guide to Australian Birds” by George Adams. The former contains illustrations of each species, usually showing differences between male, female, immature and adult. The latter displays photographs of each species, both are useful. There are several bird guide apps available, one of the most popular being “The Michael Morcombe and David Stewart eGuide to Australian Birds”. This app has settings allowing for different zones (areas within

Spangled Drongo

Australia) to be selected, which reduces the number of species options (for the selected area), therefore making identification a bit simpler. It also has call and song recordings for most species which can also be a valuable tool to assist with identification. A pair of binoculars is a very beneficial tool, especially for seeing identifying characteristics of some of the smaller species. Another useful tool is a camera with a telephoto lens. Photos can be cropped to see detail like eye colour, bill shape and finer feather patterns. Good quality binoculars or a camera will last a lifetime and will contribute enormously to your birdwatching experience. When you spot a bird in your yard, identification is best achieved by a process of elimination, based on size, colour, habitat, feeding activity and the general behaviour of the bird. If, for example, you can narrow your sighted bird down to a species of dove, fruit-dove or pigeon based on its appearance, then the app will show approximately 13 possible species in the Blackall Range area to select from. The good news is, like any hobby, the more that you do it, the more skilled you will become. You may be surprised how many species visit your backyard. Some on the range have recorded in excess of 100 species on their property. If you’re not already a member, you may find local bird Facebook group, Blackall Range Birds, useful to see

Grey Goshawk

what local species are being posted and to get assistance with identification. Give it a go, and if you have children they will benefit from the contact with nature, and nature will ultimately benefit from their appreciation of it.

HANKFULLY THE VIRUS hasn’t really affected our tree work. We are still joyfully doing all the normal things we do at this time of year, namely reducing the height and spread of trees and shrubs to let in light and warmth as the weather cools down, and cutting back the excesses of the summer growing season. And then there is the usual ongoing work of pruning or removing trees that have grown too large, too close to the house or shed, and really just any number of the different aspects of caring for your trees and gardens. Being out and about it feels like nature is taking a big sigh of relief at the cessation of all the humangenerated noise and busy-ness and pollution. The trees seem to be standing even more proudly in their grandeur, and I’m getting a sense that simply pausing has allowed people to notice and connect even more deeply with the wonder that surrounds them. This whole thing has shown how humanity, united in a common cause, can achieve literally anything! Global air travel has stopped, consumption of fossil fuel oil has virtually ceased, and the attendant pollution. Now I would like to see us do something really useful, and reafforest the entire planet! Treat this as a ‘Call to Arms’, and go and hug a tree, then plant one.

No-one out there!

VALE Peter Erdmann

In these trying times it is important to recognize those who “stand up to be counted” by helping others and one is the teams at Spar Woombye and Palmwoods who host our collection boxes, where LOCALS, just like you deposit your small change on a regular basis at the checkout.

My local council and local newspaper encourage us to support one another and show compassion to those who need it, neighbour to neighbour, street to street, band together, look out for each other. I took a camping chair, a glass of wine and the newspaper to the end of the driveway and sat ready to call out encouragement to my neighbours. Not a single person passed by.

The HT team was very sorry to hear of the recent passing of Maleny icon Peter Erdmann, shared to us by Danny Rose. Writer, Gay Liddington, wrote an HT feature on Peter in 2017, talking of his time in the Hitler Youth, the US Army, emigration to Sydney, love of photography and film and how to connect people through those mediums.

You may not think it is much in the overall scheme of things but Smartpups, like other charities, are struggling, as we have to feed our pups EVERY day and utilize veterinary care to ensure they are ready to go when required to a needy child who is either suffering autism, epilepsy or those wheelchair dependent. We appreciate YOUR support for us but also importantly for your support of SPAR in their endeavours to keep our towns functioning. I personally noted that several of them, the manager in particular, have worked very long hours above the call just to keep the shelves stocked for you. So to you, as a LOCAL, a very BIG THANK YOU for stepping up to help not only Smart Pups but your towns. ...and keep those donations coming at the checkouts.

Ian Pollock, Witta

Remembrance success Thank you for printing my poem entitled Day and Night in the recent edition of the Hinterland Times. I was delighted to see it there. Our Remembrance Ceremony held on 25 January, 2020, at the RSL Hall, attracted some 200 people this time around. It continues to grow each year. We look forward to sending you details prior to next year’s event!

As Gay said, Peter was a self-appointed historian who ‘viewed his community through the lens and wove a tapestry of stories over three decades’. It is testament to Peter that since we announced his passing on our Facebook page, it has reached over 1,500 people and elicited comments such as ‘Vale Peter. RIP - a gentle and delightful man who lived an extraordinary life,’ ‘RIP Peter a wonderful gentleman,’, ‘Very sorry to hear this. Peter was unique. Sounds like he lived a full life’ and ‘Sad day for Maleny’. As for Peter, in his interview with Gay, he said of Maleny, “This place makes me gloriously happy. There is no other town like it.” Rest in Peace, Peter. Victoria McGuin, HT Editor

ver the past five years three members of the Sunshine Coast Pente Poets group, Judith Bandidt, Deanne Lister and Lyn Browne, have worked to create the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to Headland Poetry Trail linking poetry, people and place through a series of poetry installations in popular public spaces of natural beauty and heritage significance, from the Blackall Range to Point Cartwright.

the to door a new Opportunity

Six independent poetry pathways or places make up the complete Sunshine Coast Hinterland to Headland Poetry Trail. At the poetry sites QR codes are provided for scanning via smartphone app to access recordings of poems written about the local area by the poetry trail poets. The Hinterland Poetry Trail runs from Kenilworth (Little Yabba Creek picnic area), to Maleny (Heritage Trail near the golf course), to Montville (Russell Family Park). The hinterland trail is a series of sculptures by local artists across three sites, bearing excerpts from poems inspired by the history, heritage and landscape of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Maps can be found at the sites and the Kenilworth and Maleny Visitor Centres. Yandina ‘walk and drive’ audio poetry trail consists of listening posts at six historically significant sites in and near Yandina. Maps are available at the Yandina Historic House and the public notice board in Yandina. The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary’s audio poetry walk comprises three listening stations at seating alongside the boardwalk at the Sanctuary. Plaques bearing QR codes are provided for scanning so that visitors may listen to recordings of poems written about the Wetlands environment and birdlife. Point Cartwright poetry place is situated beside the walkway from La Balsa to where the sea meets the headland at Point Cartwright. Here short verses are carved into sandstone blocks and a QR code is provided to access recordings of longer poems by the poetry trail poets about the natural beauty and lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast. Sculptor, Wayne Markwort, also designed the poetry stones at Maleny Heritage Trail, and has engraved the blocks along the Coastal Pathway with words from the poets describing the ambience, sea and landscape at this point.

ith studios and gallery doors closed, it will be a while before we can reinvigorate the arts hub on the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast. As artist Tina Cooper shared, “We were experiencing new galleries emerging and the arts groups thriving and then, overnight, all trade came to a standstill! “With art competitions cancelled, studio trails postponed and gallery orders stopped overnight the artist community was suddenly faced with the nothingness!” Tina, however, is now thinking of the up side, because many of us realise we must adapt and make the best of the situation. “I was in shock for a time, unwell, couch surfing at home and thinking of this nothingness we have been placed in,” and she came up with an idea. Creative Online Visual Ideas Diary- 2020: COVID 2020 “So, I am writing to all artists of all ages for expressions of interest, to take part.” What is it all about? “It’s about making works out of stuff you have at home, nothing new is to be brought in, and there is a three-month time frame. “We are looking for sponsors, and for human resources to run this event online. The good news is we have our new local division 5 MP Winston Johnston and his wife Helen already putting their hand up as a sponsor!” The works will be for sale online and will give every artist a reason to self-motivate and work together to make this a success. “Hopefully we will have 2D and 3D art awards, but the most important thing I feel is to record history,” said Tina. This new formed committee will be applying for an art grant to put at least 50 of the works in a ‘coffee table’ book, including the sponsors, as a record/diary of COVID 2020. “Let’s rise from the depth of this murky water of despair, and create!” Contact Tina Cooper on 0417194329, or email : tinacooperglass@bigpond.com

angeCare and Nambour and District Care are joining resources with local businesses in a continued effort to provide in-home services to over 2,000 clients and vulnerable members in the community. As a highly compassionate organisation, RangeCare and Nambour and District Care saw the need to provide a safe, affordable and nutritional, bulk food service that also supported local businesses. RangeCare’s Marketing Officer, Jess Garey, explained, “The initial launch of a delivered, frozen, bulk food service saw the collaboration of RangeCare and Nambour and District Care with local cafes and restaurants such as The Barn and Le Relias Bressan in Flaxton. “Unlike previous frozen meals programs, this service allows you as the customer to support local businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19.” Meals start from $10 and are delivered by the kindness and support of local volunteers in a contactless manner. “Following on from the success of this food service, RangeCare and Nambour and District Care have expanded the frozen meals service to also incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables and meat boxes thanks to partnerships with The Farmers Gate and Maple Street Meats – Butcher Shop in Maleny,” smiled Jess.

“These businesses have worked hard to ensure that there will be produce and meat packs available for every budget. It takes courage to reach out, but I really encourage it. Connection is a great antidepressant, but if you’re not ready to make a call yet, even connecting with an animal or a bird, being in nature, even looking to the sky if you are stuck in an apartment, these things are all valuable. “Being real is important too; it is okay to say “I'm scared”, “this sucks”, whatever it is – it is the sharing at this time that is needed, and often we will find others are feeling this way, if they don't succumb to the need to 'fix you', and there is shared relief.” Sheenagh believes kindness is also vital, for self and others. Matt recommends using this time to reconnect with what is important, and what gives you an identity. “Try returning to simple hobbies you can do around the house or develop new hobbies with what you have available. Remember that many simple hobbies do not require a lot of equipment: a pencil and paper to draw, growing plants, learning to meditate with free online audios/videos.” Matt has found that for some people, their health phobias increase and people decide to change alcohol or sugar habits, trying to get some balance back and reset bad habits. “This is the time to reassess balance in life through routine,” Matt suggests. “Routine is important in everyday life and even though normality is disrupted - new things

O

Only good will come of this

nly good will come of this, is one of my favourite affirmative statements to cue the unconscious mind to source the hidden blessing within everything that happens in our lives. It reminds us that we are greater than external events. It trains our mind to soften the captivation that difficulties or obstacles use to narrow our field of attention. The Corona crisis that currently hits us at every angle of our attention is revealing such an amazing variety of responses from people everywhere. We see so much love, humour and support pouring from and into people’s lives, that even this period of isolation and dire warning cannot block. I’m finding more people genuinely responding to a “Good morning, beautiful day isn’t it?”

with a joyful response. This is an opportunity to be kind to one another, and remember that some people are filled with fear and insecurity, not just because of the virus, but also because of the effects it might cause that could have further implications not only on their health and that of their loved ones, but also on their financial security. Whatever you give your attention to will grow. As always focusing exclusively on the problem will expand our awareness of the problem. Becoming aware of what is occurring and then focusing your attention and responses on whatever you can do in the best possible way calms the mind and disperses some of the tensions that place, a greater burden on our immune systems and our decision making. We are just starting to understand the power of

A Problem Shared...

the mind. Mindfulness, meditation and the power of visualisation (remember how it felt to run along the beach, and to feel the sunshine and the fresh clean air fill your body), this evokes a beneficial chemistry in the body. Awareness of body posture makes a great difference to how your body and mind feels. Correct your diet and take appropriate herbs and vitamins. Listen to inspiring and highly qualified individuals, examine everything, a break in routine is a great time to exercise the mind. Even in physical isolation its vitally important to reach out and stay in touch with family and friends. Remember too, that you are part of a Great Mystery, and prayer can create unexplained miracles.

Brant & Bernhardt Property Update

T

he property market in our beautiful hinterland is showing positive signs. Although enquiry numbers are down, the quality of buyers is definitely up. The digital space for buying property has been widely embraced, according to the latest realestate.com.au stats for Queensland, released in late April and pictured above. Realestate.com.au have also said “Despite unprecedented lockdowns, Australia remains passionate about property with more than 1.4 million Australians1 continuing to visit realestate. com.au each day. Australians are spending their time at home researching the property market, with searches for properties for sale and rent increasing for the second week in a row. Property seekers also continue to engage heavily with digital tools like Digital Inspections and 3D tours to shortlist properties, ahead of making a private appointment with an agent.” Source Realestate.com.au

Digital media is what buyers are using to research and buy property. In Oct 2019 Brant and Bernhardt Property purchased the latest Matterport, 3D Virtual Tour equipment, to enable us to showcase your property at its very best, without the huge cost of external media companies. Giving you the greatest opportunity for buyers to put your property at the top of their list. Contact us today, to talk about how we can expertly market your property.

COVID app

must admit to a moment of apprehension before unloading the COVID-19 app; anything that involves Amazon or Stuart Robert has to be either incompetent or dodgy or both. But the case for using it is irresistible, not only because it is the carrot Scott Morrison is dangling to allow us out of lockdown, but because it is simply good sense. Fears about privacy are almost certainly misplaced, but even if they were valid, the thunder of hoof beats when the horse is bolted is long gone. If either the multinationals or the government really want to spy on us we have willingly offered them far more dangerous tools for the task. And although I doubt that the app will be anything like as effective as Morrison is promising, it will help, which in these troubled times is all that matters. And obviously a great many Australians agree; even with the usual technical problems over implementation, the take-up rate is highly promising – by last week about four million of us. But given that Morrison says he wants 40 percent, before lifting the lockdown, a figure which Greg Hunt quantifies as 10 million, there is still a long way to go. At Friday’s press conference Morrison was all but obsessive, delivering what sounded very much like an ultimatum: download the app, you slack bastards, or I’ll lock you down forever and throw away the key. Given the innate scepticism of the population over climate change, vaccination, fluoridation, 5G - science itself, in fact – the idea that listening to those who actually know the area may be a welcome novelty. A pity that even if it kicks in this time, it is unlikely to continue. And there are a few other caveats before we can get down to the serious exercise of picking the many locks of business as usual. Some states are still seeking increased testing, others want enhanced tracking and locating of potential victims. But almost all are starting to ease the wards in one way or the other, from the promise of almost complete liberation of a hopefully Corona-free South Australia to a cautious permission for two visitors in isolation in New South Wales. And this uncoordinated unravelling will bring new problems for our great pandemic leader. It is fair to say that much of the leap in ScoMo’s polled popularity has come from the perception that he is the one in charge – the man. One reason that the same popularity has not dragged up his government with him is the view that he is something of a one-man band. His constant media appearances, with both their almost imperial edicts to cosy living room chats have been convincing and reassuring. But it will be hard to sustain that agenda if the various premiers go off on their own, as they are clearly determined to do. About the only way to bring them back into line is to pre-empt them - for the commonwealth to start lifting restrictions on a national

level, which is no doubt why Morrison is personally foreshadowing an early mark as a reward for obedience. Apart from the obvious logistical difficulties of putting such a program in place, it would put Morrison’s own political schedule awry. The current plan was the big statement on May 11, ready for the latest truncated session of parliament. And we have been told by Morrison and his ministers that it will not be entirely good news. The restrictions will become fewer. But so, in near future, will be the economic stimuli that have justified them. In particular, NewStart will revert to its cruel and derisory level of $40 a day, in spite of pleas across the board for it to remain. And some other benefits will also fade away, perhaps before many have even been accessed in the short time frame available to them. This, Morrison insists, was always the idea: a temporary emergency measure before the revitalized economy snaps back in all its resilient glory. But the economists, both local and international, are now making increasingly gloomy predictions that this is unlikely to happen. And Morrison’s promise of a big boost to growth will take a while to materialise – if indeed it happens at all, which given the global uncertainties (not to mention the local variety) looks pretty dubious. There will be immense pressure for the government to leave the largesse that the punters expected and in some cases have become used to, especially as unemployment now appears to rise by at least a million – horrendous figures not just for the politics, but for the hit on both revenue and spending. Morrison used to talk about the crisis running over six months; he (and we) will be lucky if we get out of it in a year, and probably longer. The push will be not for removing the stimulus but for reinforcing it, for continued spending and more spending. And this does not mean following the tired old formula of company tax cuts and industrial relations reform – union bashing. What the vast majority of the nervous and insecure will demand will be, as always, immediate relief – money in the pocket. The contradictory imperatives of politics and policy will become stark, there will be no painless solutions. And as this realisation sinks in, Morrison is facing a by-election. Given his personal approval rating, this might have been welcome news, a rare chance for the government to snatch an opposition seat. But as noted, the other numbers do not look so good – the two party preferred vote is neck and neck in NewsPoll, Labor is holding its ground, and while Morrison is way ahead of Anthony Albanese as preferred prime minister, the opposition leader has kept his own approval rating relatively stable. This has been no mean feat given Morrison’s unrelenting media blitz and the publicly funded campaign that has accompanied it, and an ominous sign for the government in what looks like a very difficult year ahead. Like COVID-19 itself, it ain’t over yet.

No ‘What’s On’ (apart from Mother’s Day on May 10!) as we wait for things to shift, so in the meantime we will bring you positive local stories or useful information you may need.

Community matters ‘Notice’ something different in Flaxton? Ali, Alex and Sophia Hoffmann who live on Flaxton Mill Road have put up a community notice board in front of their property. Alex made it out of recycled materials in their backyard and Sophia, a student at Maleny High School, painted the sign. “Flaxton is home to many retirees and accessing changing information about important services was initially a real worry” explains Ali. “Not everyone is tech savvy and many don’t use social media or feel confident shopping online. This way they can see who is delivering up here and on what day.”

This information gives some independence back to more vulnerable community members enabling them to stay safe during isolation. There are several local growers and producers who would normally be at the Montville and Witta markets who are now offering home delivery services. The board has been received very positively by the local community and with a new joke or cartoon posted every day, one local resident thanked Ali describing it as the ‘highlight of her walk’!

The Care Army

Information for Queenslanders with disability

Via the Queensland Government, an army of volunteers is growing to make sure Queenslanders who are most at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic have enough food and access to the medication they need, and will help them stay connected through call or video chats. This includes all Queenslanders over 70 years of age; Queenslanders over 65 years of age with underlying health issues and Indigenous Queenslanders over the age of 50 with one or more chronic diseases.

Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) in partnership with the Queensland Government have information and support available for people with a disability on the QDN website (qnd.org.au/home/ covid-19).

The Community Recovery Hotline—a free call on 1800 173 349—will link seniors and other vulnerable Queenslanders to essential services, food and support.
