The best things in life…

feel like I spent most of June in a state of exhaustion – mental, physical and emotional. These past few months have been a strain on so many of us. But as we move into July I have seen a gradual shift in mood, with places and classes slowly opening up. It is such a joy to walk down the street and see…people! We had friends over for a barbecue last weekend for the first time in MONTHS. Sitting on the patio, with a crackling fire, good music and great conversation, it was yet another reminder that the simple things are all we need – friendship, food, laughter and love. Speaking of love, if you turn to page 9 you will find something that filled me with joy when I was asked if we could include it in our pages! I won’t say any more here, but it’s a first for the HT as far as I know, and I feel very honoured we were asked to be involved. As we say on our website, ‘Tell your story’ – and this month we have stories from possibly the busiest woman on the Range, Nicole Hilton; a group of local market stallholders from Nambour, and Colin James, the man behind the most delicious fine foods and ice-cream in Maleny, now renamed The Maleny Food Co. I am missing a few of the usual July events that COVID has denied us: Celebration of Books, the Obi Art Prize, the Queensland Garden Expo, NAIDOC Week, Knitfest….but I’m happy to see the beginnings of a resurgence for local arts. We have a Blues event in Maleny, live music in Mapleton and a show at Lind Lane Theatre in Nambour. Hopefully next month, we may be back with our Creative Cuts pages as they were pre-COVID.

he Rotary Club of Maleny is very excited to support local musicians who haven't received any income for months now, as well as give a boost to the local community of Maleny, with the Winter Blues Drive-In Concert. All profits will go to the Community Grants scheme which provides support to many local organisations. Maleny Showgrounds is the location, the date is Saturday July 18, from 5pm to approximately 9.15pm. Not only is it a drive-in, but to keep our musicians warm on these typically cold Maleny winter nights, they will perform on the stage in the pavilion allowing people to be seated at tables indoors as well. There will be a large screen out on the oval which will live stream the musicians playing, and people will be able to listen in on their car radios. There is a fabulous and diverse line-up of local musical acts to enjoy: Accidentally on Purpose - Maleny and Beerwah High School uke band who have performed at Rick’s Garage in Palmwoods and at the Blues Mountains Uke Festival in February 2020.

Vix & the Slick Chix - well known in South East Queensland for their blues, funk, soul and rock, played at numerous festivals and regularly appear at Rick’s Garage, Palmwoods, and the Maleny Hotel. Kevin Borich Express - this guy needs no introduction as he is a rock god and the band perform at many festivals! Maleny Hotel will provide the delicious food which will be delivered to both tables and vehicles by a preordering method. The bar inside will only be for people seated indoors.

4 JULY 2020 HINTERLAND TIMES

This month is the second part of our feature on entrepreneur and community leader, Nicole Hilton, who still insists she is ‘not a very interesting person’!

N

icole Hilton, the 2019 recipient of the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range District Governor’s Distinguished Service Award for ongoing excellent service to the community, takes us back to 1994 when the 70-year old family Conondale home and their lives were torn apart by a tornado-like storm. It was then at age 27, Nicole learnt the true value of community.

by GAY LIDDINGTON

“We settled in the Nagy house across the road furnished by generous locals, and community fundraisers supported those affected by the disaster. Mum and Dad chose not to accept any money as they decided there were young families who needed it more. “We lived there for over a year when Granddad surveyed off a block of land for us on his property. We went from strength to strength ending up with a new house and swimming pool. It was the start of a good life for Mum and Dad down on the creek at Cookes Road.”

Nicole moved out and went back to work after 18 months with her parents, the Black Dog of depression never to cross her path again. In the mid-90s romance appeared in an unexpected guise when Nicole met Ken Hilton. She reminisces: “It was at a How to Host a Murder dinner party and, he was dressed as a woman! We married in 1998. “Ken and I have travelled the world, but our favourite are our driving holidays. We love taking roads less travelled, visiting country towns and exploring their op shops. “While my job is people focused, my down time is to be away from people and responsibility. Toogoom is my healing place where I can be creative with nature and landscape photography.” Fifteen years ago, Nicole was employed by Maleny Credit Union (MCU). The position, Credit Controller, was to be for three months. It lasted eight years.

have it printed but I don’t know that I need to, maybe it’s just something I needed to do for myself.”

“One day the CEO said he’d created a job for me Business Development Officer and Credit Control Officer. Later, I moved into my current role of Business and Community Development Officer.”

Five years ago, supported by the credit union’s CEO, Nicole melded her business acumen and creative skills into a book of another kind - financial literacy.

Nicole shares a situation that expresses itself through her passion for community: “I have such deep sorrow around not being able to have kids. It is raw but it defines who I am. However, I have three step-kids and three grandkids. I helped raise them, they are like my own.

“We observed people who came in for loans and the debt kids had gotten themselves into. I talked with the principal at Maleny High School. Perfect timing, as they had recognised the need for a financial literacy program. I teamed up with Nev Dance, a teacher at the high school, and together we penned the book.

“I host Chics in Biz in Maleny and that has now grown to Glasshouse, Palmwoods and Nambour. It’s like I want to be a mother to them all. I cry with them, laugh with them, and celebrate their achievements. Chics in Biz movement has also been invited to start in Buderim and Peregian.” Nicole joined the Chamber of Commerce six years ago and has been President for three. It proved to be the springboard and support needed to launch her ideas, such as the concept of Live Love Shop Maleny and the Maleny Gift Card, aimed at keeping money local. Apart from an astute business mind, Nicole Hilton exudes creativity. Currently, she creates art pieces from recycled ceramics. The assemblage of bowls, teapots, vases and the like, transform into pot plant stands, water features and garden ornaments. That raw side of Nicole speaks: “I’ve also written a book. It’s about what it’s like to live your life as an obese person because since I had my accident, I’ve put on 70 kgs.” I asked about the accident. “I used to teach aerobics and was a gym junkie. Then, I tore the cartilage off my hip in a gym rowing accident 15 years ago. I have to have my hip replaced, it’s bone on bone.”

Check out the "Hinterland Times" on Facebook

“Since that time, it has grown wings. A school in Nambour, Mt Tambourine High School, and recently, our Flexi-school use the book. Also, Sunshine Coast University have expressed interest. “This was an interesting project for me because, in my younger years, I was one of those people the bank chased to pay my car loan. One story I’ll never live down is when I laybyed a dinner set for a friend’s wedding present and she ended up paying it off! Fortunately, I’ve done a 360 degree turn in the matter of finances,” says Nicole, who was recently appointed to the position of caretaker of Maleny Credit Union’s branch and staff during its transition period. A recent update reveals, however, that Nicole the trailblazer has taken a leap of faith and resigned from her position at MCU. “I will continue with what I love – community, and the groups I’m involved with. I’m going to get my health sorted and then who knows what will come my way? I feel so light and happy!”

And so, Nicole Hilton, the Frustration evident, Nicole ‘I’m not a very interesting emphasises each word by person’ concludes: “I may live banging her fist on the desk. in Palmwoods because Ken’s business is there, but Maleny “I’ve gone from this fit, town. “It gives people a chance to try something and to show their work. A friend of mine started with a market stall in Eumundi, she now has two shops, she goes to Europe every year and goes to fashion shows overseas and wholesales to suppliers all over Australia. And she started off with one little market stall. “Unless you try you just don’t know.” It has not always been easy for this market that brings joy to so many people, with many shops closed all around Nambour the foot traffic greatly decreased and the markets are not what they once were.

Artist, Katie Staples, said markets give artists like herself a chance to see if people are interested in their work.

“The café used to be there and there were a lot more people when it was there, because they would come and have breakfast or lunch and it created more atmosphere. People also are not spending much or even going out much anymore. The last few months especially have been challenging.”

“A couple of friends bought paintings off me and said, ‘instead of filling up your garage why don’t you sell them.’ I thought no one would buy them but then people started showing interest and I sold a few and then I thought I’ll give this a go and see what happens, so here I am.” Market organiser, Helen Langlois, said the number of artists and small business owners she has seen over the years of running many different markets, who start out just doing a small market stall, is inspiring.

“That is why markets are so great, you have minimal outlay and they are huge launching spaces for businesses,” she said.

n the centre of Nambour, a tiny market has sprung back to life after weeks of deserted streets and silence. With laughter and conversation ringing in the air, bursts of colour, fresh food and herbs; artistic endeavour has appeared again to entice locals to explore their town once more. Here I met a young woman who has newly discovered her art, holding her first ever market stall, a stepping stone in what she hopes becomes a career. Her stall is alive with vivid reds and purples against the grey footpath.

Helen said it becomes a passion to keep a market going and thriving, and this one has the real Nambour spirit about it, but it has not always been easy and support makes a huge difference. “The Sunshine Coast Show Society really support us; we currently run under their banner. make at markets you wouldn’t have in other circumstances.” The Nambour Village Square Market is a charming spark of life and local shopping, one of many across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, a market according to organiser Helen that has found a happy home at the square. “This square was built, along with an upgrade to Lowe Street as part of the Revitalise Project in Nambour years ago, it is a great space. It has stage lighting, speakers, and everything.”

Markets, it turns out, are not just an opportunity to shop - if you talk to a few people, you start to see how it is an experience they love that connects everyone. “A story about what markets mean to people that I will never forget is from when I ran the Nambour Moonlight Markets. After they stopped, I had a lady come up to me in town and ask, ‘why did you stop the night markets because my daughter used to come up once a month from Caboolture with the grandchildren and we would come down here and we’d have a hotdog and there would be a street performer and kids activities and balloons; she doesn’t come up anymore, and that was my monthly regular outing.’ My heart really felt that,” Helen said.

But if people want markets to stay and thrive, they need to support them, stallholder Darryl Wessling said it is in everyone’s interest to do so. “When the customer buys from the markets they are keeping the money local, all the profits are then definitely going

The story behind Colin James – Maleny icon For nearly 20 years, the ice-creamery and fromagerie in Maleny’s main street has been an icon with an international following. But for Colin Cunningham, the man of humble beginnings responsible for establishing the business, the road to success was paved with a lot of hard slog. by JUDY FREDRIKSEN

A

s a 17-year old lad, Colin Cunningham began washing cheese hoops in Kraft’s Kenilworth cheese factory, not a very glamorous job for a man who would go on to become the factory manager before opening his own renowned business – Colin James. “I started off as a 17-year old in the factory and I learnt practically every job there,” explains Colin. “My job in the ‘60s and ‘70s was relief man because the factory ran seven days a week. So I was the relief pasteuriser, cheese maker, separator operator, whatever jobs were going – the key jobs, I was the one who did them. Then I worked my way up to foreman of the factory when I was about 21, then chief cheese maker and eventually became manager in the 1980s.” Little did he know that when he started the job that romance was also on the horizon. Every day, Colin would notice a pretty blonde walking past the factory on her way to the school where she taught home economics. Her mini-skirts and long legs proved irresistible, as did her personality, and in 1973, Colin married Jean who has been by his side ever since. Until deregulation of the industry in 2000, dairying was a mainstay in the Mary Valley and Maleny surrounds. So when Kraft closed its Kenilworth factory in the late 1980s, it was Colin who, with the help of a local investor, stirred some fellow workers into buying the factory.

When they are not travelling, Colin and Jean Cunningham enjoy the peace and quiet of Maleny

It is an attestation in vision and bravery to those who made that move; Kenilworth still has a cheese factory – one with plenty of tourist pulling power. With the dairy industry facing its demise, Colin made another bold move in 2001, opening Colin James ice-creamery and fromagerie in Maple Street, Maleny. “It was at the time when dairy deregulation was coming and people in the industry knew it was going to destroy the industry. Our idea was to try and support Queensland dairy farmers and when we set up the cheese room, we had 25 Australian cheeses in there.”

“I do see that we’ll probably follow the sort of things they’re doing at Noosa with the nitty gritty producers, hopefully producing really good stuff. I think the potential is definitely here for it.” If the future fresh produce is as delicious as Colin’s gelatos, we have a lot to look forward to!

Armed with good intentions, Colin and Jean set about establishing the business in what Colin describes as a vibrant town at the time with only three coffee shops. But it was a lot of hard work, he admits. “The first two-to-three years were pretty tough, but the first six months were really hard because people in Maleny thought we had rocks in our head. They thought it was the coldest bloody joint on the range and you’re opening an ice-cream shop.

The business went on to win countless awards for its products, but in 2015, Colin and Jean decided to retire and sold the business to Maleny Food Co. Since then, the couple have enjoyed travelling, taking their first big overseas trip around the world to visit various family members in Asia, Europe and the USA. They’ve also traversed large tracts of Australia’s outback and are looking forward to more adventures under the big skies. When asked about the future of the Maleny food trail, Colin sees it growing further because of all the boutique agricultural pursuits in the vicinity.

Colin started to introduce a wider variety of cheeses, incorporating European brands and flavours. He ensured the ice-creams and gelatos were made from good, fresh ingredients, sourcing milk from Maleny and Cooloola, and ensuring consistency of the meals.

Tove Easton

PRINCIPAL LAWYER

WHAT IS PROBATE AND WHEN IS IT NEEDED? Being appointed as Executor of someone’s Will means that you are the person with the primary legal responsibility for the carrying out of the deceased’s wishes as noted in that person’s Will. This ‘administration’ of the deceased’s estate involves winding up the deceased’s affairs and distributing the assets to the entitled beneficiaries. A source of great confusion to a lot of executors is the topic of Probate, what it means and when and why it is needed. Probate means that the authenticity of the deceased person’s Will has been proven and confirms the Executor’s authority to administer the estate in accordance with the provisions of the Will. The process of obtaining Probate allows others to object to the Will, and if there are any objections, to determine if the Will is valid, because it is always possible that 1. there was a later Will (which, if valid, would replace the older Will), or 2. the Will was made at a time the deceased was not mentally competent to make a Will, or 3. the Will was the result of fraud, mistake or “undue influence” or 4. the Will was not properly “executed”, or 5. the so-called Will is actually a forgery, or 6. for some other reason the Will is not fully valid. Obtaining a Grant of Probate means that the court has recognised that the Executor has the right to administer the deceased’s estate and also that the Executor has title to the assets of the deceased in his or her capacity as the legal representative of the estate.

Tove is Easton Lawyers’ full time principal lawyer and also the Hinterland’s longest serving principal lawyer serving since January 2004. She specializes in all commercial law matters as well as wills and estates, leases, partnership and company matters. She has always had a policy of providing the first consultation free of charge. That gives clients peace of mind that they are not up for legal fees before they have even had advice on their questions.

10 JULY 2020 HINTERLAND TIMES

This month our regular business Q&A is with John Kendall, owner of MALENY COUNTRY ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES (Ed note - my favourite place to potter in Maleny!)

John sells everything from pots and pans to antique jewellery to furniture in this treasure trove of a shop!

BIZ QUIZ Q

Where did you grow up?

A

Muttaburra in western Queensland. It was quite remote, and I did Distant Ed and School of The Air before boarding school. We talked on a party line which ran to an exchange 120kms from home (anyone down the line could listen in to your phone calls), it was a very different time!

Q A

What made you move to the hinterland? After a lifetime of droughts, I thought I would give green grass a go.

I had visited this part of the hinterland quite a bit through the years and thought it was a beautiful spot. The landscape and the weather, you can’t really beat it. It’s also close to Brisbane, where I enjoy going a lot, for live music and sport especially.

Q

How long have you been running Maleny Country Antiques? And what did you do before this?

A

I bought the business eight months ago. I was already a dealer with the previous owners, and they asked me if I’d like to buy the business when they left. It’s what I love, so it was the perfect opportunity. Most of my life I was running a cattle station north of Muttaburra which I owned. I also built and ran a motel in Morven. I also played bass guitar in a punk band, doing the pub circuit in Toowoomba in high school and as a result of being into music I enjoy collecting vinyl. There’s a good collection in the shop now, which is constantly growing!

Q

Do you have any funny/unusual stories from your work?

A

Not specifically but I have sure met some funny characters both in the shop and buying from people. From the mildly eccentric to the wildly unusual (some may have a similar story haha).

Q A

What do you enjoy the most about your business? I love antiques, and have been collecting since I could walk in one way or another. I enjoy talking to people, especially fellow collectors.

When I was a kid, you could often find me rummaging in rubbish dumps for old bottles, cast iron pots and various objects - it’s in the blood!

Q A

What does a 'typical' day entail for you? Googling, reading, drinking coffee, talking and in winter....freezing. Did I mention I was from Muttaburra.

When people come in with objects and antiques, it’s great to find out more about them, and you learn about history and habits from times gone by. We have people of all ages coming in, and the turnover is fast. If someone is interested in a piece, it’s advisable they buy it sooner rather than later, as things go pretty quickly. Retro objects are popular at the moment, but also decent furniture as it’s so well made. I like sourcing unique or original pieces through my work. Right now, I have some RAF wingflaps (from the ‘50s), which would look good in a bar or man cave. You never know what might appear in here! This last weekend, now that COVID restrictions have eased a bit, we had one of the busiest weekends since the shop has opened, so I think the situation has made people look at different ways to shop perhaps – to buy local, support local, and not buy cheap mass-made goods.

Q

If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be?

A

Just in general - to the younger generations, if you need furniture...don’t buy new stuff that will last ten years, buy 100-year-old stuff and it will last another 100. Maleny Country Antiques and Collectables can be found at 7/38 Maple St, Maleny, 4552. Phone: 0427 585 660

Early Settlers

Full steam ahead!

Cate and Doug Patterson have just completed the Montville History Group's new book, Early Settlers of Hunchy, Razorback, Flaxton and Montville: 1885 to 1914, which they will launch at the July Montville Markets on Saturday July 11.

Mary Valley Rattler General Manager Mike Green is pleased to share that this popular tourist attraction is back on track!

This history captures the challenges 20 early settlers faced and overcame in moving from a more gentle European environment to a vine forest with pockets of sub-tropical jungle, where the lore and practices of northern hemisphere farming proved unhelpful. It also identifies the tyranny of distance for these communities only six miles from the nearest railhead at Palmwoods. The lack of serviceable roads left these settlers isolated for long periods of time. Early Settlers is more than a collection of 20 biographies. It acknowledges the connection of the First Nation People to the area and the careless erosion of their rights by the decisions of consecutive colonial governments. The book also describes the process of gaining and keeping a selection, which was a challenge in itself, and recalls the social activities of a community that had to create its own entertainment. Including some of the stories that have survived the years, this is a fascinating historical read.

“We are excited to let you know that our first steam service will recommence on Saturday July 11 with a special ‘Superheroes’ event train where we will introduce Steam Man! Our volunteers can’t wait to get back to doing what they love, welcoming guests to the Rattler! This will be a great day out for the whole family to reconnect,” Mike said. The Mary Valley Rattler has seen over 46,000 passengers get on board since commencement of operations in October 2018. At the time of shutdown, the Rattler had increased their schedule from three days a week to running services six days a week and the historic Gympie Station which houses a café, retail space and historic display open seven days a week. Train schedules and advance bookings (currently required) are available on the website: maryvalleyrattler.com.au

Bumper Swap Meet The Sunshine Coast Antique Car Club (SCACC) is all about the history, restoration, care and preservation of motor vehicles, with a dedicated clubhouse within the Nambour Showgrounds.

All aboard the Mary Valley Rattler!

Maleny Country Antiques & Collectables We pride ourselves on diversity and customer service. With multiple dealers through the shop, we really do have something for every type of collector.

Unfortunately, the SCACC wishes to inform HT readers that the annual Nambour Swap Meet scheduled for July 25 has been cancelled due to current COVID-19 restrictions and the uncertainties associated with this pandemic.

Settlers work on the Razorback Road

The Club, however, looks forward to holding a 'bumper' of a Swap Meet on Saturday, July 31, 2021! The Swap Meet is held under the pavilions and across the ovals at the Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour, with 600 sites available for advanced booking and 300 non-bookable casual sites. ‘Pride of Workmanship’ Awards The Rotary Club of Maleny is recommencing their Pride of Workmanship Awards this year to provide Opening Hours: for Saturday businesses and organisations with an opportunity and a way to acknowledge and thank employees their 9 -2pm excellence. Given the COVID-19 times, some employees have gone to exceptional lengths to help their managers and businesses in this difficult period. Nominees for the Pride of Workmanship program will be presented with a special plaque, which has their name engraved on it, in recognition of their achievements. A dinner will be held at Tranquil Park on August 29 where the recipients will be presented with their plaques. Nominators will explain the reasons and the achievement behind why each recipient was chosen. This is a great way to publicly recognise their employees for their efforts. Nominations commence now and the closing date is August 1. Members of the Rotary Club of Maleny will be going around the community, businesses and organisations, giving out nomination forms. As it is impossible to get to everyone, please contact Paulette at paulette.steele@gmail.com if you want a nomination form or more information.

henever we visit Majestic Cinema in Nambour, an advert for DownTown Burger Restaurant always appears, which has my family salivating. Needless to say, it often results in a visit afterwards! If you’ve never been, then I highly recommend you take a look. The décor is inviting and funky, with wooden tables, exposed brick and decent lighting - such an important part of creating a welcoming atmosphere that I find quite a few restaurants seem to forget. The burger selection has something for everyone: the Tropical Paradise, with maple bacon, beetroot, fried pineapple and salad; the Clucky Coconut burger, with free-range grilled chicken breast encrusted in almonds and coconut; the Pulled Pork burger, or the Veggie Delight created with housemade falafel, tzatziki, grilled halloumi, tomato relish and salad. During this difficult period with COVID-19, Downtown’s owner and Nambour local, Cameron Scott says, “There’s no doubt small and local businesses have

had some dark days and many are still struggling, but we have seen a resilient response from the community and local businesses. People have definitely been thinking out of the box in order to survive through COVID! “We took critical measures to ensure strict cleaning and hygiene practices and still adhere to them, as the health of our staff and customers is paramount; because of this we feel comfortable with the changes we are making, inviting customers back in for meals, as well as continuing our takeaway and delivery service.” It has been met with great happiness by many burger aficionados that the restrictions are easing, as the restaurant is now able to offer dine-in once again from 8am-8pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those who haven’t sampled breakfast at DownTown yet, the menu is delicious, with savoury or sweet waffles, brekky burgers, smoothies and Shakshuka style eggs on offer - just jump on their Facebook page to see the menu and mouth-watering photos! DownTown Burger Restaurant is at 99 Currie Street, Nambour, open 8am-8pm, order online and delivery from 4-8pm to Nambour, Burnside and Woombye. Phone: 5441 1587

A chill in the air

ell, if this damp weather continues, it looks like we’re in for a cool winter on the Blackall Range and nothing quite beats a good wood fire to warm you up (and dry you out). This brings us to yet another great reason for planting trees - you can cut them down... (wait for it... I haven’t quite lost it yet!) and turn them into environmentally sustainable heating fuel! Even a 10-year-old tree can provide lots and lots of firewood and if you’re on a few acres there is no reason why you can’t plan to supply all your own firewood within a decade or so. One great surprise for you all may be that Broad Leaf Privet (Ligustrum lucidum) makes good firewood - it’s one of my favourites, burns hot, clean and splits well. There is a trick to making young wood such as Broad Leaf Privet into good firewood and that is, that the cut wood

generally quite separate from these days.

should be stacked and kept dry to season for 6-12 months. This allows the timber to dry thoroughly to make good clean burning fuel. At Forest Farm we’re already harvesting our own firewood from just 10-year-old trees. To ensure sustainability we continue to plant more trees for firewood such as River She Oak - Casuarina cunninghamiana, Black Wattle - Acacia melanoxylon, Flooded Gum – Eucalyptus grandis and many more trees to provide multiple uses including, cattle fodder, soil improvement, windbreak, firewood and of course habitat for wildlife! One of the great aspects of growing, cutting and seasoning your own firewood is that it reconnects you directly to nature through physical activity. Our ability to harvest the resources we need to survive in a sustainable manner, is a direct connection with nature, a connection that we are

Firewood production can be an integral part of your acreage plan and as electricity costs increase we may see it become an increasingly attractive option. Purely financially growing your own firewood looks good, but then there are all the other benefits such as those listed above in our timber plantings. It’s a win-win, just a little bit of hard work involved, which is also a great way of warming up in the winter months. Harvestable timber lots are also a great way of protecting the edge of remnant forest, as they extend the shade and canopy of the forest edge. Planting, harvesting, preparing and sharing your own timber fuel is a great healthy way of keeping warm, and restoring our native forests and habitat. Come visit Forest Heart for the tubestock that you can grow your own firewood with, it’s a great time for planting.

3. Switch it off! By reducing your electricity consumption (and your power bill) you are helping the planet. Also swap to LEDs, which use roughly 75% less energy than halogen light bulbs and last up to 10 times as long. 4. Repair items, if you can, to avoid landfill - and we have the Maleny Fix-It Cafe and Eric the Ready in Palmwoods to help you, for starters! 5. Pick up litter - it’s all of our responsibility to keep waste, plastic, wires and the rest from our waterways, oceans, trees and wildlife.

Charcoal coloured pebbles surrounded by baby mondo amongst stone pavers create the checkerboard effect.

6. Recycle everything you can and buy recycled - two great ways to help with sustainable living, along with choosing plastic-free whenever possible.

hose of us who have been revegetating our properties for some years are seeing more seedling trees as part of the understorey. These have come from our own trees that are now old enough to flower and set seed or have been carried in by birds. Occasionally we might dig up the young seedlings and pot them on for future use (free trees) or just let them grow and sort out the competition themselves as time passes. Either way, it’s very encouraging to know that our efforts are literally bearing fruit.

it’s not surprising that birds drop the nicely cleaned fruit, probably with some fertiliser, in the revegetation where it readily germinates. Because of the generally fleshy nature of rainforest fruit and seeds, they don’t store readily for future use. Wattle seed on the other hand, with its hard, dry coat can last for a long time in storage so it won’t matter if we’re not ready to plant at the time we collect it. If you have fruit or seed to spare do contact Barung where the species can be verified, and rainforest seed planted straight away by the nursery volunteers. A recent CSIRO publication ‘Australian Rainforest Seeds: A Guide to Collecting, Processing and Propagation’ will be an invaluable addition to our libraries and will help us all in our efforts to better understand the ecology and behaviour of our local trees.

It is of course a good idea to learn to recognise particular species as some can look very alike. Our locally native palm, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana is very similar to the Alexandra palm, Archontophoenix alexandrae from north east Queensland.

On another note, we’ve passed the shortest day and while July is usually a cold month, the early wattles are in flower, especially closer to the coast, and buds are opening on the blue flowers of Hovea acuminata. Spring is coming!

Here are ten top tips to help you on your way:

2. Choose locally made products and produce, and look at the labels - where was it made, what is it made from, how far did it travel to reach you, has the company been involved in exploitation of people, animals or the earth’s resources?

This beautiful extended living area features a raised garden bed with an ergonomically designed slatted seating area built into the planter box. Plantings of Japanese Maples, English box, Cassuarina cousin it, and Ficus pumila to adorn the walls.

We know we need to avoid continually taking from nature, so as to maintain an ecological balance on our planet. So how can we be more sustainable, and is it easier than we think? 1. Think before you buy - make a checklist before you shop, so you only buy what you need.

Sustainable solutions

7. Fertilise your garden organically - chemicals you use on your land can end up in the water system eventually, so organic is the best choice. Check out Forest Heart Nursery or Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies for options and advice. 8. Back away from balloons - sorry to be a party pooper, but those things are constantly killing animals who mistake them for food, whether on land or in the sea - just research sea turtles and balloons to see the damage they have caused. There may be biodegradable options these days, but please research before you buy - the ecosystem needs your support! 9. Use compostable bags for clearing up dog poo wrapping it in plastic makes no sense, when what’s inside is organic and can break down into the earth naturally. 10. It’s clear that buying less stuff is more a sustainable choice, so find multi-purpose natural products for you and your home, which mean less packaging and less toxic chemicals. The Maple Street Co-op, Kunara in Forest Glen and The Source Bulk Foods are great places to look, and there are many more hinterland businesses who are thinking of the planet in their products and practices. Let’s support them.

Feathered friends... or foes? by PAUL FRASER

numbers have been in significant decline, something that would have been rejoiced in the past. Whilst some of the introduced birds have been accepted by many naturalists as having minimal environmental impact, there are still some that are of major concern. Two species that fall into that category are the Common Starling, and the Common (Indian) Myna. Both of these compete aggressively with native birds and continue to increase their range. In some parts of the country, native species, especially hollow nesting birds, have been almost totally displaced by these more dominant introduced species. Many local authorities recognise this and have trapping programs in place. There is always the debate that it’s not the fault of the introduced species however, my view is that it’s not the fault of our precious native birds either, and they should be protected whenever possible. ird species can be classified in terms of their presence at a particular place, at a particular time, as being migrant, vagrant or resident. A migrant, or migratory species travels from some part of the world to spend time in another part of the world, usually on a regular seasonal basis. Examples in our area include the Spangled Drongo, and most of the Cuckoo species. Down on the coast it includes most of the wader/shore bird species, many of which migrate from places like Siberia for our summer. A vagrant is one that may turn up at a location where it would not normally be seen in any season. Unfortunately, it often means that it is a migratory species (heading somewhere else) that has become lost or blown off-course in a storm. A recent example of a vagrant is a Kentish Plover that has been seen (by numerous birders now) on a sandbar in the Noosa River. It is my understanding that this is only the second ever confirmed sighting of a Kentish Plover in Australia. A resident species is one that is present in an area all year round. These will be the native birds that we see frequently, and often take for granted, regardless of the fact that they are often unique and beautiful. In our area resident species include Rosellas, Lorikeets, Cockatoos, Butcherbirds, Fairywrens, Bowerbirds, and many more.

Another group of birds are the non-native or introduced species. These species don’t occur here naturally, but were introduced, either intentionally or accidentally, and have become established as resident breeding populations. Some of the introduced species that we see on the range include Spotted Dove, House Sparrow, Common Starling, Nutmeg Mannikin and Common (aka Indian) Myna (not to be confused with the native Noisy Miner). Introduced species that have become established in other parts of Australia include the Common Blackbird, European Goldfinch and European Greenfinch. There are also examples of Australian native species (including, but not restricted to birds) being introduced to areas outside of their natural range, and becoming an environmental pest. Some of the introduced species have now been established here for more than a century. Some species appear to have an almost insignificant environmental impact, and have become so familiar over time, that they are now endeared by some people.

SOMETIMES feel like one of the luckiest people alive! I am in a unique position where people have been asking me to help them with their trees for the last 24 years. This means that I now get to drive around the Maleny Plateau, one of the most picturesque places on the planet, and continually observe how these giant, gentle beings have responded to my tender ministrations, over a period spanning decades. There is something about the passage of time, and how that relates to the life cycle of trees that lends gravity the simple pleasure of observing these magnificent organisms as I drive around. It is amazing to watch them evolve and flourish and to see how my sometimes remarkably simple remedial actions, like removing dead and diseased wood, affects their continuing development.

A good example is the House Sparrow. Introduced to Australia in the 1860s, it has become established in cities and towns across the eastern half of Australia. In the 1960s, some local authorities became so concerned about the House Sparrow that a bounty was paid for both the bird, and its eggs. However, in more recent years, major concerns have been raised in some places because House Sparrow

NEW BOOK, NEW CONNECTION Marg Gibbs with her new children’s story, Jasper’s Jumbled Up Words

Author Marg Gibbs has watched her latest story unfold and come to life through the pandemic. The 32-page picture book is based on the author’s twin grandchildren, who at two love to babble and speak in their own language. A gentle and sensitive book it’s about persistence, self-confidence, language development and family relationships. Jasper’s Jumbled up Words, written by M J Gibbs and illustrated by Emma Stuart shows that a young boy longs to be understood. In the story, Jasper, who is a toddler, gets frustrated with communicating to his family. As Mum says in the story, “your words will come soon.” When an incident with the chooks causes Jasper some stress, he runs into his mum’s arms, endeavouring to speak out his emotions. Throughout the story, the use of sound effects, onomatopoeia help to enliven Jasper’s communication. Marg says, “I hope this book encourages positive experiences in communication from birth to school age. Gestures, sounds, new words and fluency can develop at a child’s own level.” Jasper’s Jumbled up Words sensitively deals with the difficulties surrounding language development and offers children, parents and caregivers hope. This book is coming out soon ($19.95) and you can contact Marg via her website: mjgibbs.com.au. You can buy a signed copy at the Mapleton Country Markets, Saturday July 25.

a barista-made coffee or tea under the trees while listening to live entertainment this month from Lee and Shaye Hardisty. Shaye and Lee are Mapleton locals, birthing and raising their kids on the ridge. Both are avid banjo lovers and can often be heard serenading the neighbours or their chickens from their porch. During lockdown, aside from rearranging everything in their house and their garden, they have both been working on new musical projects. They are bringing to life a roving musical duo of banjo, sax, and vocal harmonies. Shaye is designing new costumes for them to wear and Lee has been hatching new plans of making the duo portable enough to rove at festivals, markets and events. Lee is also working on a new solo album with a whole stack of musical instruments and new songs. Watch this space for news on its eventual release! Losing bush means losing birds

Veterans deserve Smart Pups

Two brief stories of Queensland endemic birds. The first starts 400 million years ago in Gondwanaland where trees that we in Australia call Southern Beeches first developed. These trees live and belong in rain forests. Forests that were never meant to burn.

Things have been rough for Smart Pups during COVID-19 but we are still there, breeding, training (and feeding) our smart pups for our children in need, but now we are also providing assistance dogs for our deserving Veterans. So, whether you host a collection box at the checkout in your store, or as a consumer you fill it with your change, donate online or just spread the awareness… I say THANK YOU… it is sincerely appreciated.

The devastating bushfire late last year on the Queensland/ N.S.W. border burnt Southern Beeches, but also destroyed the habitat of the already endangered Rufous Scrub Bird, whose existence on this earth now hangs by the proverbial toenail. 400 million years and it now comes to this! Not only are rain forests burning, but bushfires are now so intense that the small pockets of bird refuges are also being destroyed. In this last season of bushfires 50% (or more) of the habitat of 60 species of endangered birds was destroyed. The second story is about the small, beautiful Blackthroated Finches, which I used to call Black-hearted Finches and kept a pair in my aviary when I was 11 years old growing up in Melbourne. It is estimated that there are 800 of these magnificent birds left in the wild. Their numbers are falling because they are losing their habitat in central North Queensland, mainly to coal mining. We have Australia’s National Environment Act to protect them. Now 775 development proposals have requested permission to clear parts of the Black-throated Finch habitat. How many have been successful? 774… Only one was knocked back. Now the Adani Mine wants an additional 9,500 hectares of this bird’s key habitat and of course the Queensland and Federal Governments have approved this disastrous proposal.

Thanks for the laugh! What a great poem from Kath Fisher in the June edition! It led me to think that perhaps she could design the last two lines to fit almost any age group. I am now ancient and inclined to dunk my Milk Arrowroot biscuits in warm milk, wear tartan slippers and forget where I left my teeth! For me the age of 40 was way back when the earth was young! To make this great piece of verse relevant to those who are still vertical of my generation perhaps the last two lines could change from:

“You ought to thinking of writing your will Cos forty is here and you’re over the hill!” To:

“When you turn seventy then’s time to worry Not just over the hill but stuck in the gully!”

I loved it Kath, please keep them coming. It truly made me laugh and brightened my day! Angus Richard, Montville

I write in response to the letter from Julian Sutton in the recent Hinterland Times (June 2020). I spent all my working life in telecommunications and related fields. I have experienced radio frequency burns, the warmth of radio energy in a hand, holding a 40-watt fluorescent tube alight while it was powered by radio energy, etc. So, I know what electromagnetic radiation can do. Let me make some observations.

1. 5G, mobile telephones, etc., produce electromagnetic Terry Clark radiation (i.e. EMR), not nuclear radiation. Smart Pups Volunteer, Woombye 2. We are all bathed in EMR from the sun. EMR is just light on

a different frequency (as are X-rays and radiant heat). 3. Radiant energy drops as a function of the square of the distance from the radiator. So, if there’s a certain energy at one distance, it will be only a quarter at double the distance, a sixteenth at four times, and so on. This means it drops very quickly as you get away from the transmitter. 4. People who ask for absolute proof of its harmlessness (a negative) are asking the impossible and are being disingenuous or mischievous. So, as noted above, it can “cook” you if there’s enough power and at the “right” frequency (which is why microwave ovens work at 2450MHz to target water molecules). All the research I have seen (not that much) seems focused on heat effects (Try the EMF Forum on the net as well as material put out by ARPANSA). Basically, this looks to see at what power density level there is observable damage to tissue. Standards have been set (and revised as evidence suggests) to ensure our safety and mostly the levels we are exposed to are an order of magnitude lower than these or less. Engineers therefore design radio systems to work within these parameters and usually there’s only just enough power radiated in the direction of the receiver to ensure reliable communication. This level will be determined by how weak a signal the receiver can handle along with the gain of the receiver’s aerial (think of it as the size of the receiver’s dish). So systems between two fixed points can use less power than mobile systems because they direct the energy mostly at the receiver. 5G systems may try to do this to some degree by detecting the direction of the mobile handset whereas older mobile systems simply direct their radiation slightly downward in all or general directions (horizontally). (This also means you may be exposed to less energy near a tower than, say, a couple of hundred metres away depending on terrain, and more energy from your mobile phone or home WiFi network near your head or face.) I think it would be fair to say that our safety from heating effects is assured as far as towers are concerned. I’m less certain about the phones we put up against our heads or our home WiFi systems. Having said all that (and I could explain more), there may be other, probably rare, situations which might affect us. For example, the energy may be reflected from a number of surfaces to focus on us (imagine a shaving mirror in the sun); or the electric field between two adjacent points in space (between your ears, say) may experience a very short peak as all the radiation we are exposed to conspires to come into synchronisation there for an instant. That will be virtually impossible to prove or replicate. Similarly, there may be structures within our biology that could resonate at certain frequencies which 5G may produce briefly. Again, impossible to prove. And there may be aspects of particular people which might make them susceptible to some effect - say a resonant cavity in a tooth (working like an organ pipe). I can think of a few other possibilities in this vein. Would you forego the benefits of 5G, etc., for such rare downsides? I doubt it unless you happened to be the one affected. I hope that clears things up. Poets

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

CORNER

SPIDERY OBSERVATIONS The stars glimmered like diamonds; the moon was a ball of light, Like a ballad the sound of the insects echoed their songs in the night; My work for the day now was over, as I on my veranda reclined, It was time to relax in Maleny with a cheese and a glass of red wine. When suddenly down swung a big spider, truly an incredible sight, His eight hairy legs so close to my nose it made me jump up with a fright, My cheese went flying upwards; my red did splash and spill, As the spider – I named him Harry – began to show me his skill. Four strands he spun horizontal, swinging by just one thread, These were to be the foundation upon which he would build his web; With speed, he then moved in circles, clockwise he moved to the right, Each circle becoming much smaller, the centre now well in his sight. Harry was a hard worker, who did not stop for a break, Kept going until he had finished, two hours and a half it did take, His web was well positioned, and covered a large track of space, It was a beautiful work of perfection that hung like a silken lace. It was obvious that Harry was clever, because he had a plan, He showed me his skill as the factory, the architect, and artisan; His body produced the substance that his legs weaved into a thread The design of his finished product an artistic spider’s web.

Keep sending us your poems - we love receiving your creative work!

Like man; poor Harry also labours, just for his snack or a bite, His might be a fly, a moth or an ant, or some other trapped in its flight. As I relaxed with my red in Maleny, I wished Harry, ‘Bon appétit!’ Spiders are such hard workers and deserve every morsel they eat.

To submit your work for possible publication, email: editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au or post: PO Box 818, Maleny 4552 Word limit per poem (due to space) is 300 words.

Local restaurants and RangeCare keep community healthy C

ommunity care has always been at the core of RangeCare’s services. When COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing practices hit the hinterland, their ability to deliver that high standard of care was tested.

Newly appointed CEO Greg Manion saw the immediate financial implications that the pandemic had on local businesses, as well as isolated and vulnerable members of the community, and took action by expanding on RangeCare’s traditional meals service.

“We were able to adapt our meal service to incorporate meals from local businesses - The Barn on Flaxton, Le Relais Bressan, Café Mapleton and The Glasshouse Clouds Montville - and expand our delivery capabilities thanks to the kindness of our dedicated volunteers,” said Jess Garey, Marketing Officer at RangeCare. RangeCare have now taken a further positive step by creating a ‘pay it forward’ service. For a limited time, if you purchase three meals or more both you and the community benefit. You will receive one complimentary meal from The Cottage Range, and RangeCare will also donate one meal to a vulnerable community member. The impact of this simple act of kindness cannot be overstated. Tracie O’Grady, client and recipient of donated meals said, “The meals took me back to home and when I could cook my family meals”. “Those of you being blessed with these meals make sure you enjoy every mouthful,” Tracie said. If you would like to view the full menu or to learn more about RangCare please visit www. rangecare.com.au/frozen-meals or give Shae a call on 07 5445 7044. Meals coordinator, Shae King

Ayurvedic Health Advice To Suit You

Staying Strong

W

e have just experienced an unprecedented time of staying at home and keeping a distance from our normal social interactions to stave off the spread of Covid 19. While this has in part kept the spread of the virus at bay, there is still talk of the second wave of infection and fears of what will happen in the future when other viruses emerge. Will we go scurrying into our homes and have to shut down our businesses every time a new epidemic appears? Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to the disease process. Instead of isolating the strain of disease and attempting to come up with vaccines to control the spread, Ayurveda looks at strengthening the physiology so that the disease does not take hold.

Wendy Rosenfeldt is a teacher of Transcendental Meditation and an Ayurveda practitioner

There is a theory of immunity in Ayurveda called "seed and land" theory. The body is analogous to the land and infection or "bugs" are like seeds. If the body is filled with toxins and lacking in vitality then the infection will find fertile ground for spreading, just as land that is fertile will sprout many seeds. If digestion and immunity are strong, then the seeds of infection will just not be able to take hold.

I am not suggesting that we should blindly put our faith in just boosting our immunity and then taking no other precautions, but it is worth putting some attention on the role of prevention. If our digestion is weak, we have a poor diet or we are exposed to toxins in the environment, we develop ama. Ama means anything that has not been properly digested. Ama creates blockages in the physiology and disrupts the body’s natural intelligence. The physiology is remarkably good at repairing itself and maintaining balance but if it is overloaded by impurities it will struggle and eventually fall ill. Some simple tips for reducing ama are: Optimising the digestive system. This can be done by eating your main meal of the day, or heavier foods such as animal products and sweet food, at lunchtime. Eating a big meal in the evening puts a strain on the digestive and metabolic processes. If you have a lighter meal in the evening you will notice that you feel more refreshed and lighter when you wake up. Eat freshly prepared food especially vegetables and avoid leftovers. Vegetables are bursting with vitamins

and eaten in their whole form contain many balancing properties. A poor diet can never be rectified with a handful of supplements. Modern science tends to isolate the active ingredient in a plant. This approach compromises the synergies that exist among organic components. Bioflavanoids, found in fresh fruit and vegetables, were originally dismissed in favour of artificial vitamins. They have since been found to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antiallergic properties. Food can lose its intrinsic intelligence the longer it sits around in the fridge. It is not as if that bag of carrots will remain perfectly nutritional until the magical use by date. Cooked food declines in goodness even more quickly. Food that has been cooked, refrigerated and reheated can create ama no matter how organic and fresh it was to begin with.

Sip boiled, hot water throughout the day. Just as washing the dishes with warm water will help to dissolve the greasy deposits of food, drinking warm water will assist in dissolving the sticky, blockages lodged in the physiology.

Major grants

The cluster of hot spots that emerged from Victoria does not yet constitute the dreaded second wave, but it is worrying and defies explanation.

Can your not-for-profit group make our community more active, vibrant, inclusive or resilient? Do it with support from Council’s Major Community Grants Program which is open from 13 July to 24 August. To help with your planning, why not attend a free grant writing webinar being held late July to early August. Visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Livingand-Community/Grants-and-Funding to book and for more information.

ustralia awoke last week to the strains of Spike Milligan’s poignant refrain, “I’m walking backwards to Christmas.”

It may not be all the way to Christmas, but it could be even further – well into next year and perhaps beyond that. We don’t know and we can’t tell,

Containing state borders has been hard enough. Policing municipal boundaries would be all but impossible – unless, of course, vast numbers of troops are to be redeployed.

But it is sadly clear that our dream run over the Coronavirus pandemic has come to a sticky end. And it has happened on both fronts, the medical and the economic.

And that would entail considerable political risk. There is already talk of ignorant ethnic populations – by which, of course, we mean Muslims - breaking the rules, holding illegal gatherings for their Eid celebrations. To turn them into closed ghettos would not be a good look, especially in these sensitive times.

For readers of The Australian, of course, it is all too simple: Daniel Andrews unleashed the beast by not clamping down on the Black Lives Matter protests. But hang on – there were protests in other states as well, without clusters emerging. And in any case, not one of the cases in Victoria can be traced to the demonstrations. So perhaps the problem was Andrews mismanaged the Cedar Bay abattoir outbreak. Or ignored the ethnic communities. One way or another, we have to blame the socialist totalitarian for something.

But apart from the partisan bullshit, the fact that there are clusters at all must serve as a warning, because across in other parts around the world COVID-19 is still raging.

The Lift Project Sunshine Coast

It is out of control in Brazil, spreading dangerously in India; working its way through the southern United States, and most disturbingly making huge inroads in parts of China, where it was thought to have been tamed.

spots, and if they can be confirmed and isolated, they will become mini-gulags, no-go areas. Good luck with that.

The global infections now number close to ten million with nearly half a million deaths, and despite the predictions of the optimists, we are not yet in reach of a vaccine. This is not good news. And for the government, the worse news is that the easing of restrictions has not just stalled, but has been reversed in some areas, notably the urgency of opening state boundaries. It appears that we are reverting to the old maxim: think globally, act locally. The national cabinet was never much more national than our mish-mash federation or the constitution that birthed it; it was a useful conceit, and helped us muddle through the early emergency, but it was always gesture politics rather than reality.

And it appears that the other premiers are less than sympathetic. In NSW, Gladys Berejiklian has made it clear that Victorian holiday makers will not be welcome in her pristine domain - in fact she has bluntly told them to bugger off. Australia is still doing fairly well by world standards. Moody’s rating agency and the International Monetary Fund have both offered commendation, ticking us off as one of the best in a fairly miserable bunch. But the IMF have warned that shutting down the stimulus measures designed to dampen unemployment too abruptly could lead to awful consequences – it has urged caution, a gradual easing rather than a sudden shut off. Morrison and Josh Frydenberg seem, reluctantly, to be getting the message. The strictly temporary JobSeeker program, scheduled to end in September, may have to be extended, at least for the most vulnerable sectors of the economy. And some extra spending is being rolled out; the beleaguered Arts are finally getting a boost, although a very minor one, and in the wake of the Qantas stand down, assistance for the airline industry is on the table. But it is still all about industry, business. Individuals – casual workers in particular – are not considered essential. And of course enemies are still to be punished. The universities, and most of all the ABC, have been singled out for clobbering. Some of us are in this together more than others. And Morrison is hell-bent on ramping up the nation up for business whatever the consequences. “We can’t go ‘stop, go, stop, go’, we can’t flick the light on and off,” he insisted, blithely ignoring the fact that this is precisely what he is planning to do with JobSeeker.

And now the premiers have declared that it is every state for itself. Some are derestricting like mad, others are more cautious, playing for time. And of course Victoria has gone backwards – even toilet paper is back on the rationing list. This is serious, folks.

“We’ve got to just keep the focus on keeping the economy open and getting people back into jobs.” And there is absolutely no need for anxiety about the Victorian outbreak, because ”we were expecting it.” Perhaps he was – the rest of us were somewhat taken aback.

And at that stage Andrews called in the army – not to guard the state’s vital supplies of dunny wipe. but mainly as prison wardens, preventing desperate returned travellers immured in five star hotels from making a bid for freedom. However, after a brief contemplation, Andrews apparently decided that this was a mission not in the finest traditions of ANZAC.

But it’s time to forget about the health crisis – so 2019-2020, We need a new narrative to turn the page into the new financial year. It’s the economy, stupid – and we do mean stupid. Back to Spike Milligan. As the Great Goon warbled:

So the troops were sent back, and the long-suffering cops sent off on the job. A few were retained to assist emergency testing statins, presumably to look intimidating, to warn of the dire consequences if victims refuse to co-operate.

I’ve tried walking sideways And walking to the front But people just look at me and say It’s a publicity stunt. Yes, quite so. Moving right along….

It seems that the lock downs may not just return, but be micromanaged. Crash testing has begun immediately in trouble

Travels with… Rensina van den Heuvel Local women in the villages sell their excess produce

The women stare at me hearing the foreign accent; I point to myself and say “Afstrali” and they immediately begin to chatter amongst themselves. Warm smiles break out and working women’s, calloused hands are outstretched to me in welcome. Holding my hand out with rubles, one woman takes a few coins from my palm. It really is a pittance. I take the whole bucket full and drop them into my bag. “Oh so many, Spaseeba,” I say as I hold my hands out wide. The women laugh goodheartedly making their generous bodies wobble; still chatting to each other in their beautiful language.

“Da Svidanya” I say in my limited Russian with an Australian accent, a smile and a wave and they all respond, “Da Svidanya”. We ate those beautiful Russian potatoes for a month and created a lifetime memory. n Russia they grow potatoes. I mean everyone in every rural village, in every backyard is a garden filled with flowers and potatoes.

Oh, and some green cabbages. The outer leaves of the cabbages have been removed, so they look like big green shiny, bald heads as they sit up on their stalks. They are still growing and alive. So instead of harvesting them all, they just cut one off as they need it and the others keep on; in the ground just doing what cabbages do and waiting for their turn to be picked. How brilliant is that? The potato plants still have their white flowers atop the glorious lush green stems of the plants and they dominate all the gardens. If you’ve ever been privileged enough to eat Russian dumplings with homemade mayonnaise you’ll understand why they grow the finest potatoes in the world. Against the bright blue cottages, the garden colours are vivid and show a romantic rural picture. We are driving from Zarabino, a tiny port town on the far Eastern coast of Russia to Mongolia on one leg of our Australia to Switzerland journey.

We stay off the extremely rough dirt ‘Trans Siberian Highway’ and drive on smaller (but just as rough) tracks to see more villages and have some interaction with the local folks.

Travelling in a certain style! 

On the sides of the roads as we drive slowly through the potholed tracks in the villages, buxom breasted, voluptuously moulded women sit together on tiny stools in rows. They often sit outside their homes. Adorned with bright headscarves the women create a bobbing rainbow as they interact with each other. In front of them in well worn, pewter coloured metal buckets is the excess produce from their gardens. Most of the buckets are filled to the brim with golden potatoes. Solemn faces gaze curiously as our dark green Land Rover stops. I emerge and walk purposely towards the women. The small potatoes look delicious, piled high with the deep brown earth still clinging to them. I point to the bucket and ask one of the women in Russian, how much the potatoes are. “Skolka?”
