Horizon Festival heads to town

T

his year, Horizon Festival cranks the lever on excitement with a festival hub like no other, over 10 inspirational days and nights.

Running from Friday August 27 to Sunday September 5 the festival brings together local and national artists to offer vibrant, immersive and entertaining experiences for all ages.

Tickets are available to book online now, horizonfestival.com.au, where you can also find the full program, and there are also many free events to amaze and entertain everyone.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the festival was an exciting celebration of the arts.

“Horizon is a great example of Sunshine Coast Council and our community working together to create a festival that pushes boundaries and surprises and delights all in attendance,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Our region’s arts and cultural sector is thriving and, in its sixth year, Horizon Festival is well on its way to becoming a cultural highlight on the national arts calendar.”

Horizon Festival Artistic Director Dr Lynne Bradley said this year’s festival shone a spotlight on the extraordinary talents of our local Sunshine Coast and Queensland-based artists.

“The all-Queensland line-up offers local audiences and visitors to the Coast the chance to experience a high quality and accessible artistic program, set against the spectacular backdrop of the region,” Dr Bradley said.

“The natural environment and issues such as climate change feature throughout the program, with many projects inspired by, and set within, this region’s very special landscape including Lake Baroon, Glass House Mountains, Chambers Island and Happy Valley.

“Deeply connected to Country and community, local Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) and Jinibara artists are central to this year’s festival.

“The First Nations’ program includes the muchcelebrated ceremonial performance, Dawn Awakening, at Stumers Creek on Sunday 5 September, large-scale outdoor visual arts projections, Kabi Kabi Connections, and an array of rich cultural offerings throughout the region.”

The Wonderland Spiegeltent will take centre-stage overlooking the water at Cotton Tree Park, bringing with it a program of world-class cabaret, comedy, circus, dance and theatre. It also includes hands-on workshops led by local artists, a poetry slam-night with The Bunker Spoken Word Series and a Disco Rainbow Sparkle Dance Party for kids.”

Ann Donoghoe grew up in Canberra and knew at the age of 14 that she wanted to be a teacher. However, her path led to community work and social activism before she arrived in Maleny to become principal of The River School.

unshine, laughter, and the bright faces of children at play whilst on a ‘brain break’ drew me into The River School at Maleny as I sought their Principal, Ann Donoghoe. Preceding Ann as she walked out of the office was her dog Jet, a nine-year-old Bichon Frise, black eyes peering out from groomed white fluff.

“Jet has been coming to school for nine years—he’s gone up through the ranks and he thinks he’s the principal.

He loves the school. In fact, during the holidays, he tends to go very quiet because there’s not much for him to do at home and he loves being around the children.”

A child of the ‘60s, Ann grew up in Canberra with her six brothers. “Mum had twins at 19 and then me, followed by four more boys. And Dad was part of a family television company, Tom Donoghoe & Sons, started by his father.

“I remember a happy childhood in a secure family.

Growing up with only brothers built a lot of resilience in me and had a lot to do with shaping who I am.”

At 14, while attending a Catholic girls’ high school, Ann knew she wanted to be a teacher. After graduating in 1979, she attended teachers’ college for a year but then deferred. A path of community service unfolded.

“I was always drawn to people-orientated work and started volunteering at the Louisa Women’s Refuge in

Queanbeyan, working with the children of women from domestic violence situations. Then I moved into being a general worker, working with the women.

“It was nothing for me to go to the housing commission office in Canberra and just sit there with a family in crisis and refuse to leave until they gave them accommodation. We would sit until closing time and beyond.

“We were one of the women’s refuges represented on the very early NSW Domestic Violence Task Force that set initial laws into motion.”

In 1981, when the new Parliament House was being built, Ann and a friend who worked at the refuge started the Queanbeyan Tenants Union. They advocated on a

volunteer basis on behalf of tenants in response to a housing crisis created by the influx of workers. Long-term rental residents, in particular the elderly, were being forced out due to rent increases.

“We held public meetings, and what came out of it was the South Eastern Tenants Advice and Housing Referral Service, and as a direct result, it became set up as a government agency. That was that early stage of looking after tenants’ rights.”

Ann shared that her paternal grandmother was the first woman on the Queanbeyan Municipal Council and was instrumental in setting up a pre-school. And so it did not surprise me that her granddaughter was also a change-maker.

“When I worked at the refuge, I saw a need for short day care. So, I formed a committee, and we opened Campbell Street Children’s Centre, which provided occasional care and long day care in a centre rather than in people’s homes.

“And I was on the steering committee that established the first youth refuge in Queanbeyan.”

An advocate for women’s equality, Ann’s research found that the Louisa Women’s Refuge was named after Henry Lawson’s mother Louisa, one of the first advocates of the women’s suffragette movement.

When the council proposed an exhibition to showcase ‘past to present’, Ann created a section on women in change, which of course included her grandmother.

It seemed a natural progression that Ann Donoghoe became involved in political issues and was one of the initial group, Women Against Racism.

They joined the Pan-African Congress, which became part of the anti-apartheid protest outside of the South African Embassy in Canberra.

“We set up the longest picket line that went for over 100 days. Rosters kept the line in place so the police couldn’t dismantle it. It was amazing to see lots of different groups come together to fight apartheid.”

On South African Women’s Day 1985, protesters disrupted a National Press Club address by Ambassador Cornelius Bastiaanse. Ann filled in the gaps: “Me and four other women bought tickets. We sat at different tables and took on various personas—I pretended I was a teacher.

“When the ambassador got up to speak, we, one by one, in a pre-arranged order, interrupted and spoke against apartheid. Each time, a speaker from our group was ejected and everything calmed down, he would start to speak again, and then the next person interjected.

“They ended up stopping his address as they did not know how many of us there were in the room. The event received international coverage. We were very dedicated to the cause.”

August edition of HT: The intensity of social activism sees Ann Donoghoe leave Canberra.

She sets out on a journey that ends in Perth and revisits her dream of becoming a teacher. Ann takes up a post in Maleny in 1997 and 12 years on, becomes Principal of the River School.

“When you put 50 machines in one spot and start staging structured events with world ranking points you start to attract competitive players, social players and pinball tourism,” he said.

Covid really affected the industry, with the machines disappearing from many venues they are normally found in, like clubs and pubs.

“I decided to go ahead and do what I had always wanted to do, which was to create a dedicated pinball centre, for the purpose of growing the sport and exposing people to pinball.

“We have a very significant list of pinball games here, one of, if not the biggest in Australia. We don’t have a

bowling alley and dodgem cars and a couple of pinball games in the corner - this is a dedicated pinball centre.

“This space is specifically set up for the expansion of pinball at all levels, club level, world championship pinball, social pinball, introduction to pinball for young people and people with a disability,” Vaughan said proudly. “The centre is flat and level, it can be accessed by people of all abilities.”

So when did Vaughan’s love of pinball begin?

When he was in high school, Vaughan caught two buses with a transition point right outside an old-style cinema with a pinball arcade inside. The front was a series of bi-folding doors with one simple latch door at the end.

He was given special permission to use this door, reserved for cleaners and management, as long as alone.

“When I finished high school my very first job was a radio announcer, and it was right over the road from that cinema.

“It was a job I worked very hard to get. On my first day, I started at 8.30 and by 9.30 we had a break and one of the presenters said, ‘let’s go across the road to play pinball’. I said to him they are not open until midday, because I am thinking the owner had said not to bring anyone with me.

“He said to me, ‘that’s okay, he leaves the end door open just for us, we are just not allowed to bring anyone else, although sometimes the games are on when we get here, so I think someone else does play.’

“I turned and said, ‘that was me!’ All those years I had been dreaming of a job at that radio station, and the announcers were playing the same games, an hour after I left each morning!”

In just a few weeks there will be an exciting unveiling of a new machine at SCP. The Mandalorian. The latest machine to be launched by Stern in the US, and Nambour will be one of the first places in Australia people can find it.

An official unboxing night is planned with the very first game played on the brand-new machine to be auctioned off for charity.

“There has probably never been as much interest around a new game as this one, partially because the title is one that everyone is fascinated with at the moment in its own right, and also it has just been quite a while in between drinks (due to manufacturing ceasing in the US because of Covid), people are eager to see something new, so we are really looking forward to it!”

The club also had one of their most popular wins and a milestone recently with 15-year-old Cailin Ferguson becoming the first female player to win an Open Tournament with the club, beating three top players in a three-round-final.

Along with making club history, Cailin is now considering entering the Women’s Championships at the Masters coming up in Brisbane.

“We are lucky to have three really strong young competitive players here, all headed to the Masters next month in Brisbane,” said Vaughan.

“They will have the chance to go and play down there and it will give them some big tournament experience, next level stuff.”

Vaughan said pinball is often thought of as just a bit of fun and a game of chance, and it can be played that way, but there is also an exciting world of competitive and structured playing that requires a great deal of skill.

Many people do not realise you can learn how to have a lot of control over what the ball does, even its speed.

“Interesting things happen,” Vaughan explained, when you play with intention.

positioned in the centre of the machines, “That’s what is so much better than playing for a fluffy toy, people are playing for this.

“The moment one of those scores comes down, the bell rings, everyone stops. I own the place, they are all my games, but my initials aren’t up there anywhere!”

Vaughan laughed, “That’s an indication of how hard it is to get up there.”

It also brings people great joy, Vaughan added.

“People seem to walk out ten years younger than when they walk in, especially people that haven’t played for a while. They walk in and they say, “Oh I remember this”, and you hear them laughing and people they are with are commenting they haven’t heard them laugh like that in ages.

“Having a facility of this scale is also unheralded in Australia. We have other clubs come and play here, because of the scale. And because it’s alcohol-free it is accessible to everyone.”

And that is important to Vaughan - that pinball is inclusive.

“They are meant to be enjoyed by families, by kids, by everyone.”

than I possibly would have had I followed a professional career. Being an amateur has really opened up my world to so many wonderful opportunities.”

I think I may have popped out of my mother singing. It’s just there and I have to sing,” Evalee laughs.

“I really didn’t start vocal training until I was working and could afford to pay for lessons or a vocal coach myself. So, I was very late to the training side of singing.

But I have always had a vocal coach, even now I find I am still learning.

“I did get into the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (twice) when I was in my twenties. I learned a lot while I was there, but I became a mother of two and it was a very big commitment that wasn’t a good fit for me.

I always wanted to put my family first. So, I found other outlets,” Evalee reminisces.

“I like to say that I have had the best amateur career, and I have had the opportunity to sing many more roles

Evalee was a part of the Brisbane Light Opera Company and The Ignatians in the 1980s, both groups prominent in Brisbane music theatre. Unfortunately, they no longer exist.

“I was also fortunate to do a season with the Queensland Opera and Essgee Entertainment (Simon Gallagher) as well as being an artist for Colin Harpers’ Pop’s Orchestra.”

Evalee admits it is very hard to have a professional career as a singer and have a family. “I had to choose.

The professional road was difficult to achieve with a young family...so, I chose my family and to do the things I wanted to do, rather than the obligations I had with a professional career around rehearsals and performances.

“The amateur theatre suited me better and I was in the enviable position of not having to make my living that way,” Evalee smiles. “You could do it after hours when you had some help. Everyone there is juggling family and work.”

Evalee says one of the best parts of the ‘amateur’ world is you meet and work with people from all walks of life. “That is really exciting. You know, you had judges, shop assistants and council workers all coming together in music theatre, as well as amazing opportunities to work with people with brilliant musical careers.”

Evalee has many special memories, but the Oriana Choir is a major one.

“The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir is a standout in my career. It’s an 80-voice choir that has travelled and performed internationally, as well as many performances here on the coast. I was a part of it until last year.

“I was in the choir since its inception in 2005 and travelled with them on three international tours.

It was fantastic and it burns so brightly in my memories. We performed in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome and St Paul’s Cathedral, London, to name just two of the amazing churches and theatres on our tours. It was a fabulous experience with an amazing group of people.”

Evalee enjoyed all of the tours, but the one through central Europe in 2016 is her favourite, where they played in a beautiful theatre in the town her son-in-law grew up in, and where Beethoven had played.

“However, my favourite memory was the night we had dinner at a Hungarian restaurant, and I ended up in an impromptu performance with the roving musicians. It was fabulous,” Evalee has a wide smile at the recollection.

National Opera company, and The London Concert Artists group, before she moved to Australia and eventually to Maleny where we have benefited enormously having someone of her calibre directing our music and stage productions.”

Evalee says that The Singers are looking forward to next year’s major production of The Merry Widow.

“I have had a fulfilling and wonderful amateur career. I have been able to perform many roles and I’ve worked with fantastic musical directors, orchestras, and directors both here and in Brisbane.

“So much is hard to plan right now with Covid, but I do have a new grandchild arriving soon and that’s very exciting, as well as joining another local choir,” Evalee laughs.

“I knew the music and just started singing. It was not planned; it was just amazing. It fills my heart that I was able to do that. I had the confidence in myself to sing those songs and I just got up and did it.

“By the end we were all singing. It still gets to me and makes the hairs on my arms stand up! Such a fabulous night!” Evalee says again with relish.

“The Maleny Singers provide the most remarkable opportunity to sing with a 25-piece orchestra. The orchestra musicians come from here, Noosa and Brisbane, just everywhere. They come together every year and it’s always exciting. It’s a collaboration we have been enjoying for around fifteen years,” Evalee explains proudly.

“We often raise funds for local charities. This year we donated all our proceeds to the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade.

“I have been involved since 2013 and I have played a principal role each year. We have a really great principal line-up. There were 30 singers involved in the production this year.

WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 2 In last month’s article I discussed formalities that Must appear in a Will in order for it to be a valid document.

In this article I discuss matters that should appear in a Will and why. A Will Should contain the following:

1. EXECUTORS: Appointment of one or more executors. The executor’s job is to carry out the wishes of the Testator as these are set out in the Will. Provided that the person is aged 18 or over and does not lack mental capacity any person can be appointed to that position including a beneficiary of that Will. It is always a good idea to appoint two or more executors in case one executor should predecease the Testator.

2. GIFTS: The Will should also discuss how gifts of property are to be distributed.

3. RESIDUE:

The residue means the left-over property of the Testator after the Testator has given away specific items of property. An example could be where the Testator gives his house to a beneficiary but does not mention what is to happen with the rest of his assets such as cash and shares. If the Will contained a Residue clause then these non-specific and non itemized pieces of assets will be able to be distributed. If, on the other hand, the Will did not contain a Residue clause then the result would be partial intestacy. Intestacy means that those items of property not specifically gifted away would have to be distributed in terms of the rules of intestacy rather than as one might imagine that the Testator would have wanted.

4. ATTESTATION: The attestation of a Will states that the Testator signed the Will in the presence of both witnesses. The best place for an attestation clause to appear is at the end of the Will. Should the Will not contain an attestation clause and the witnesses not be found to clarify that they were both present when the Testator signed the Will then it may be impossible to obtain a grant of probate of the Will.

t’s beautiful around here, isn’t it? And there are certain groups who help keep it that way, such as Barung Landcare, who are all about conserving and enhancing the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and the surrounding areas.

This vital community organisation has recently welcomed two new members of staff to their Maleny team, to add to its zest for all things green and growing: General Manager, Doug Evans (a new position), and Education and Communication Officer, Megan Lee. Doug comes from a background in business, followed by a career in not-for-profit organisations such as Boystown, driven by his deep sense of social purpose, and he believes that efficiency is key to any enterprise.

“If you run a business more effectively, you can do more of the good stuff!” Doug shared with a smile.

“Sometimes people think you’ve gone over to ‘the dark side’ if you are business-like, but it’s what helps a not-

for-profit organisation like Barung achieve its goals.”

One of Doug’s first goals will be to launch into fundraising for Barung’s new home on the precinct, a challenge he is looking forward to.

“If you want people to support you, you have to give them a reason,” Doug explained. “Barung has a compelling story to tell. What it does is important, and we have to educate people to understand its importance.”

Educating people to understand the importance of looking after our environment is where Megan Lee comes in.

Megan’s career seems almost tailor-made to suit Barung’s needs, starting from a position with Conservation Volunteers Australia and moving to Intrepid Landcare (which she co-founded) in 2015, and bringing more than 100 young people into the Landcare fold through the youth program!

Megan moved to the Sunshine Coast from the Illawarra in New South Wales two years ago to be closer to family, but during the Covid year worked remotely with the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council and as a

The last community planting (on April 24) established the outlines of the rainforest-to-be, and it won’t be long before the gardens are a joy and a delight for Maleny residents and visitors.

The success rate of the first two plantings is remarkable – some trees are already almost head high after just a few months!

“Last October’s planting had ideal conditions with the summer rains,” said Cam. “We’ve been really lucky with the weather!”

The April planting extended the rainforest area, covering the slope from the top of the site down to the level area where the buildings will be located, with paths wandering amongst the trees.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can hear wompoo pigeons and the miaow of catbirds (though

some people say they sound more like babies crying) almost in the heart of Maleny.

Cam’s plan also includes what will be a native garden showcasing local plants, to create a garden for wildlife, with grasses and shrubs for our seed-eating birds, a special area designed for frogs and lizards, and homes for native bees.

Cam is planning to use the native garden as inspiration for local gardeners. “Even in a small garden we can help the insects along, such as our blue-banded bees, by planting appropriately,” he said.

“I’d love to see gardens incorporating important plants for insects, which will repay us by pollinating the plants we love and by keeping pests down.”

Barung is about community just as much as it is about plants. More than 30 enthusiastic people came to get their hands dirty and put these plants into the ground.

Black felt pens were provided so participants could write their names on the labels of the trees they planted – and one day, when the trees are tall and magnificent, our planters (or their children – or their children’s children – some of these trees are very long lived) will be able to say, “I planted that!” or perhaps, “Grandad planted that”!

The results of such community effort are highly visible. Aerial photographs of Maleny from the 1950s show an almost denuded landscape with just the odd Moreton Bay fig left standing in a paddock as shade for cattle, but stripped bare of every other bush and tree.

“Not all of the revegetation is native rainforest, but there has been a huge influx of landholders into the area who have embraced the idea of revegetation” said Ian McMaster, Barung’s president.

“These landholders put tremendous effort into Barung Landcare clearing weeds and planting local species.”

Parking Donations Time for tennis The Montville Tennis Club Inc., at Montville Sports and Recreation Ground on Balmoral Road, is in full swing since opening the clubhouse in May. Near derelict tennis courts, originally laid down in 1925 on an old pineapple farm, have been transformed from a dustbowl to synthetic grass courts, following the incorporation of the Montville Tennis Club in 2018.

A handful of enthusiastic ‘tennis tragics’ paid $5000 for Life Membership which helped realise the vision of an inclusive tennis club that welcomes players of every standard - just for the love and fun of tennis.

The Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club (BRHCC) managed the car parking for the recent Maleny Show at the Pioneer Village site and the property at Tallowwood Street, Maleny.

Show patrons were extremely generous with donations for the parking, and the Club at its recent meeting decided to donate $500 each to two worthy local not-for-profit groups.

The Twinnies at Landsborough who undertake sea bird rescue and rehabilitation, and the Cindy McKenzie Breast Cancer program based out of Buderim Private Hospital but servicing the whole of the Sunshine Coast.

Sublime Fingerlimes A local hinterland business, Green Valley Fingerlimes, has been stacking up awards recently for their produce. We caught up with Head of Agriculture Senior Teacher, Jade King, who produces this delectable citrus.

I have been on the Sunshine Coast for 21 years and have found the Sunshine Coast provides the most amazing conditions for fingerlime production. It is not just that we have the perfect climate, particularly the valley which is Green Valley property, but also the incredible local community, restaurants and grocery markets that support us.

The Green Valley Fingerlimes team is our small but amazing family business that includes myself and my teenage kids. We also have great support from neighbours and friends.

If you had one piece of advice for a small business starting out with a passion for their product, what would it be?

Q

How much work is involved in growing fingerlimes, and how do you manage to be sustainable and chemical-free?

Q

I grew up on a sheep, cattle and grain property, I have worked across a lot of agricultural industries, and I have to say that fingerlime growing would be the one of the most difficult to manage when it comes to harvesting.

Their passion is what will show through their product and business. So the fact they have passion, this will give them the drive and resilience they need to succeed!

The thorns, wasp nests and intense labour is definitely the biggest challenge. Growing them productively and without any chemical applications to the trees is relatively easy as they thrive naturally.

You recently won the New Exporter Award at the QHED Awards - what does this mean to you?

A

This means a lot to us obviously and gives us the confidence to go further and continue to provide our product both here in Australian and overseas.

So, what are fingerlimes?

What was the inspiration to start Green Valley Fingerlimes, and when did it begin?

Fingerlimes are an Australian native citrus that grow naturally in the border rangers and northern New South Wales rainforests. They are elongated finger sized fruit that are full of pearls of citrus, which many aptly call citrus caviar.

A love for all things Australian native certainly made me aware of and keen to grow fingerlimes, however it was an assessment task I provided my senior students to present on a new agricultural enterprise, with the promise that the one selected by an independent judge would be started.

That day Taylor Holt presented on fingerlimes and was selected as the winner, and there started the first fingerlime planting.

Have you always been based on the Sunshine Coast, and why is this a good place for growing fingerlimes?

The talented chefs use our fingerlimes on seafood dishes that are delicious, along with desserts and cocktails that are masterpieces, as well as taste sensations.

What are your plans going forward for the business?

Plans for the future are to expand our range of fingerlimes as well as our market area to include more fruit shops and grocers, so that these wonderful fruit become a regular household item.

Nature’s Bounty: Booloumba Creek Discover a plethora of natural beauty at Booloumba Creek, no matter the season.

ooloumba Creek is like a buffet for nature enthusiasts.

Nestled in Conondale National Park, it’s the kind of place you can’t help but think nature’s gotten a little carried away.

For the more adventurous hiker, forge on and take on the colossal Conondale Great Walk. Making its way through varying flora, the 56km trail explores tall open forest and lush rainforest, offering up expansive views along the way. A four-day jaunt, the walk is a truly immersive experience in nature.

The name is somewhat deceptive; this bountiful section of the park is more than just a creek. In essence it’s a gateway to nature’s highlight reel with a slew of dazzling landscapes beckoning to nature-hungry wayfarers.

Come for the day or sleep beneath the stars at one of three campgrounds; whether you’re here for two hours or two days, there’s plenty to enthral.

Most day-trippers come to Booloumba Creek in the warmer months in search of a reprieve from the heat with a dip at one of many stunning sapphire-blue water holes.

I’ve come at the other end of seasons’ spectrum, but the scene is so perfect I can’t help but be lured in.

Pausing at Booloumba Creek 3 camping area, I traipse down to the creek. Gin-like water reveals a kaleidoscope of colours. Pebbles of all shapes, sizes, and colours litter the creek bed trailing to a succession of blues that ends with a deep, indigo pool ensconced in rainforest.

While it’s far from a polar plunge the water is somewhat fresh; let’s be honest, winter on the Sunshine Coast is hardly an arctic affair.

Numb limbs aside, there’s something about plunging into ice-cold water that makes you feel alive. But only in brief intervals. After all, the surrounding rainforest is enough to tempt visitors to delve a little deeper.

A short stroll from the creek, a hiking trail into the forest caters to that whim. Leading through ancient rainforest the track trails to an array of offerings.

An art-inspiring waterfall if ever there was one, the Artists Cascades rush over a mass of boulders into a deep

A hike to the intriguing Strangler Cairn is somewhere in between; a relatively easy 6.5km amble that leads to an ever-changing work of art constructed in a remote part of Conondale National Park.

Towering around four metres high, the work is akin to a giant egg, albeit a thought-provoking one.

Made by renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy, and constructed from a selection of chiselled rocks with a Strangler Fig sapling at its peak, the artwork is designed to shift and change over time.

Whichever path you choose, Booloumba Creek is sure to fill the nature-hungry void.

GETTING THERE: Access from Booloumba Creek Road via Eumundi– Kenilworth Road. High clearance 4WD vehicle is needed to access Booloumba Creek by car, with three river crossings. You can also park at the entrance before the first creek crossing and hike in.

Street Art Nambour’s Lorraine Taylor and The Black Knight

he highly successful Street Art Nambour initiative is planning a massive fundraising event, called Fuse Fest, on Sunday September 12 at the Nambour Showgrounds, from 10am - 8pm.

Organiser, Lorraine Taylor, shared that they have 15 food trucks and over 60 stalls coming, plus Hot Rods, Ken Mills Toyota with a hybrid car display, and the main stage entertainment via the Big Pineapple Festival, with bands from 3-8pm both days. There will also be a small stage hosting various breweries and local entertainment.

“On top of this will be Street Art Nambour displays, roving entertainment, stilt walkers, a Brazilian brass band, the Nambour brass band and much more, “Lorraine said.

“Rotary and the Girl Guides are organising the car parking as fundraisers.”

Street Art Nambour is looking for buskers to set up around the showgrounds and calling for volunteers to man the event. They also need corporate sponsorship.

“We’ve done 35 murals in Nambour, with no assistance from any local groups. We have sponsorship from Diablo and Toyota, but we need more corporate companies to step up,” Lorraine explained.

“I’m a hand sign-writer and work by brush. I’ve worked in theatre, on sets at Aussie World, in movies, and I’ve always adored street art. I follow quite a few street artists.”

Lorraine believes that artists of international standing, who have a big following, help bring people to Nambour.

“The mural on the pinball parlour in Currie Street of The Black Knight is very popular. We spoke to Steve Ritchie in the USA, who created the original knight design on the pinball machine, and he gave permission for us to replicate his design. ”Ross Holloway was the artist we chose to do this mural. Steve was so pleased with the result that he shared it on his page, leading to 35,000 likes within a few days.”

The current plan is to continue with murals that connect to the history of the town, such as the mural of Maureen Hungerford, the tuckshop lady at Nambour State College for 40 years – her image is two storeys high.

“There’s the sawmill on Bridgestone, and a mural of log carts on the Nambour-Mapleton Road, at the Nambour Health Centre. We have a World War II hero project for the RSL, and Sir Clem Renouf, who was a polio vaccine pioneer

from Nambour, and another potential local artist for Lind Lane Theatre.”

There have been plans to recreate a 1950s image of a telephonist on the side of the Nambour Telstra building, and Lorraine ran a poll for residents on Facebook to see if they wanted this.

“It was a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ poll for the Telstra mural, and overnight we had 1100 saying yes, and only three said no – I think that’s a clear message from the locals. We just need funding to achieve this spectacular mural.”

Street Art Nambour is a team of volunteers who dedicate their time and experience to build a community and their recent award is well-deserved. It’s certainly been an interesting journey so far, with various challenges and great rewards.

And Lorraine’s motivation for doing this? “It feels so good to make people smile.”

“There are an estimated 10-15,000 people coming, and we are advertising right across Queensland on social media and with Visit Sunshine Coast and Queensland Tourism.”

The event has received a small grant from Sunshine Coast Council to go towards paying for the bands, and excess funds will be used to fairly pay artists for future murals, as they currently work well below cost.

“We are 100% community run and independent,” said Lorraine. “Our dream is to create murals to link hinterland towns, and then print a Street Art Trail across the towns.

It will be a fantastic tourism drawcard.” Murals are already planned for Pomona, Cooroy and Kingaroy.

Lorraine and her team at Street Art Nambour recently received the Volunteering Sunshine Coast Award, and she shared how she found her inspiration to begin this project.

“I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast for a long time, but only moved to Nambour four years ago. I saw the mural of David Bowie and went YES! That was the beginning of the idea.

MARY VALLEY ART FESTIVAL

T

he meandering Mary River and the old valley railway were the inspiration for Geoffrey Webber when he decided to participate in an innovative exhibition at the Mary Valley Art Festival on July 22-25.

Mary Valley Alive celebrates the Mary Valley Art Festival's 20th anniversary, telling the story of the valley through its flora, fauna and people. Twenty guest artists will interpret the theme by painting plinths to be displayed with artworks from the original Mary Valley Alive exhibit, which is comprised of art from the Traveston Crossing Dam era.

The architect-turned-artist said his theme for the plinth was a personal one.

“I retired with my artist girlfriend and wife, Narelle some 15 years ago, to Mary Valley country, simply because we both loved the peace and quiet of country regions,” Geoffrey said.

“I was keen to chase more trains and Narelle wanted to continue painting.”

They soon became actively involved in the Traveston Crossing Dam campaign and learned to appreciate the wonderful attributes that the river and the valley townships offered.

“And just like the railway threaded its way through the valley and connected with townships, so did the river too,” Geoffrey said.

“I treated the four sides of the plinth and the top, quite a large surface – about a metre square - as a three-dimensional work of art, highlighting some of our activities and interests.”

Using acrylic paints, he painted the images so they wrapped around the four sides of the plinth over a period of three weeks.

Geoffrey and Narelle are thankful that the Mary Valley continues to be a beautiful place to live.

“We are grateful and celebrate the successful ‘Save the Mary River’ campaign with the new exhibition of plinths and those original works.”

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED Hundreds of entries poured in from every state across Australia for the prestigious 2021 Sunshine Coast Art Prize. The 40 finalists were selected from 425 submissions across a range of genres including painting, drawing, photography, printing, textiles and assemblage.

Finalist works are available to view online now at gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition of all 40 finalists will be on display at the Caloundra Regional Gallery from 27 August to 10 October, 2021.

The lucrative prizes will be awarded to the winning artists at The Winners’ Announcement gala event on September 23, 2021. Exhibition visitors are invited to vote for their favourite work to select the People’s Choice Prize winner.

ETCHED SERIES Jonathon Westacott’s exhibition, Etched Series, can be seen, by appointment, at the Tina Cooper Gallery in Montville until August 31, 2021.

Jonathon established the Sunshine Coast Hot Glass Studio in partnership in 2004. He works at the furnace, blowing form with many layers of coloured glass within, a complex and physical process.

From his drawings of plants and birds in the landscape, Jonathon creates polymer stencils which adhere to the surface of the glass and the sand blasting process removes layers of colour revealing the image.

“The landscape work is a condensed impression of a place, often surreal and impossible but also unmistakeable in its representation,” Jonathon explains.

PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT  Planning is well underway for the Sunshine Coast Plein Air Paint Out 2021, with spectacular locations being organised and held in conjunction with the 2021 Yandina Street Fair.

Details of the Paint Out are as follows: Sunday August 15, 5pm Meet and Greet; paint out days are on August 16 -20, morning and afternoon sessions (at specified locations around the Sunshine Coast).

On Saturday August 21 the art exhibition has its official opening at 2pm, featuring Rosanna Natoli and Cr David Law, and the exhibition runs over the weekend.

Hope this finds you well and enjoying life (do editors have a life?)

I have just collected the latest HT news from outside Spar Woombye and the stock on the stand was diminishing before my eyes which did not surprise me once I had sat down and read the content.

It is obvious to me why HT is such a success and why it was runner up for 2020 QCPA best newspaper award and if I am any judge, I'll bet it tops the list in 2021.

The reason in my humble opinion is that unlike mainstream newspapers the content on HT focuses on GOOD, uplifting news with virtually no hint of negativity (except sometimes a ‘Letter to the Editor’).

It's probably a mirror image of what I do for Smartpups to some extent whereby myself and Robi O'Keefe focus on what our dogs achieve once they enter the family of a child suffering autism, epilepsy or those wheelchair- dependent... everything changes for the better!

So, you and you team take a BIG pat on the back for your monthly edition of GOOD news. Well done ...keep up the good work!

We had a Windy Winter Solstice at Maleny C & K Community Kindergarten recently, launching into the day with Andrea Kirwin and Nyssa Ray performing, ‘Songs for our Little Friends’.

If you were passing 15 Cedar Street on June 19, you would have heard the joyful songs and laughter of children and adults as we gathered to sing, dance and create! The crescendo of our community music gathering was the singing of a song about Life at kindy - developed from the words and reflections shared by children and composed into a piece by the talented Andrea and Nyssa.

It was a magical moment for all who attended, and we wish to extend our thanks again to Nyssa and Andrea.

So, Nambour has had some new branding lately. ‘I am Nambour’, which I read is part of ‘the Nambour Economic Transition Strategy (NETS)’. Apparently, it ‘invites business to collectively market under one consistent look and feel to encourage business investment and pride in the town’.

It’s a nice idea, so could someone involved explain why only a handful of businesses from the town were in the

promo video? Surely it would have been a perfect time to show a wide range of businesses, community groups and locals?

Where were the cafes? Where was the Nambour Book Exchange? What about the market? How about Backbeat Records? Or the local newsagent? And where was the marvellous Lind Lane Theatre, which has been established in Nambour for over 75 years?!

Our town is diverse and eclectic and deserves more than just four or five people/businesses in the promo. The marketing team behind this have missed a trick – and a huge chunk of Nambour.

Two members, Lou Rommel and Michael Considine, looked all over Mapleton to find a location.

Keeping fit for 20 years

They approached Charles Allerton (former president of Mapleton Bowls Club) and Ray Lovelock (former founding member of Mapleton Bowls Club) to see if the gym could use the space underneath the bowls club.

“Charles and Ray were very supportive of the gym,” said Andrea, “and so it was agreed via a gentleman’s agreement that work could begin on improving the space. Not long afterwards, a lease agreement was established and each person who was a member of the gym would contribute a small fee to the bowls club.”

Improvements were the result of numerous working bees by volunteers within the community, and paint and building material donations from locals, businesses and even Maroochy Shire Council.

Even recently, new awnings were bought thanks to donations from Roger Loughnan Real Estate, Mapleton Realty, Range of Motion Physiotherapy and Mapleton Pharmacy, along with locals Sara and Frank Feldman.

Initially, the steering committee was going to lease gym equipment, however, after lots of research and discussions, Lou Rommel and Michael Considine funded $11,000 to purchase the equipment which was sourced from a gym in Noosa.

’ve been to a few gyms in my time, but one of my favourites for atmosphere and welcome has to be the Range Community Gym and Fitness Centre in Mapleton. A few years ago, I booked an appointment with Paul Parker, an instructor there, along with Tina McLaren. Paul was helpful and encouraging, and always on hand if I had a question.

Absorbing a smattering of violence and negativity along with our food creates a level of stress and anxiety that can compromise the immune system.

In Ayurveda, rasayana is a term for a substance which strengthens immunity and includes many types of food and herbal preparations.

Ayurveda also recognises the value

of behavioural rasayanas; actions that nourish the mind and body and support the immune system.

Behavioural rasayanas include love, compassion, uplifting speech, moderation and simplicity. Anger, violence, hurtful speech and dishonesty are understood to create damage in the mind and body.

Even in modern medicine there is the understanding that emotions can influence our health. The limbic system is our emotional centre and through the hypothalamus, regulates temperature, hunger, thirst, growth, sleep and emotional states.

If the awareness is dominated by sensory overload, the capacity of the mind is limited to the surface value.

Studies show that there is less activation in children’s frontal brain regions, relating to cognitive function and emotional control, following a week of playing violent computer games.

In comparison, when the awareness spends time at deeper levels of the mind, experienced during transcending, hidden brain reserves are accessed and we are able to utilise more of our brain potential.

Impacted on by stimuli from the senses, the immune system, cognitive information and our emotions, the limbic region of the brain causes the hypothalamus to release a wide variety of neuropeptides.

It is not about enforcing control on ourselves or resentfully doing actions for the sake of doing good.

Instead cultivating the awareness of what we do, how and where we spend our time, and understanding the effects of experiences on ourselves and our children helps us to make more life-supporting choices.

Neuropeptides create an effect on the whole body. Emotions such as anger and hate release a surge of neurochemicals that can cause stress and damage while positive emotions such as love and appreciation release health-promoting chemicals.

If we are exposed to violence and aggression, these experiences will have to be processed by the limbic system in much the same way as junk food or alcohol is metabolised, ultimately putting a strain on the physiology.

Hinterland leads the way

T

he good news, according to Trillion Trees (a joint venture between BirdLife International, the Wildlife Conservation Society and WWF) is over the past 20 years, an area equivalent to the size of France has naturally regenerated around the world.

The bad news – trees covering an area the size of Denmark are still being removed each year globally.

Climate science is clear - one of the most effective means of fighting the devastating impacts of climate change is to replace a lot of the trees that we have removed.

How does the Sunshine Coast Hinterland fare in the fight against climate change?

Week after week, year after year, Landcare volunteers have been successfully restoring land degraded by excessive vegetation clearing, erosion, invasive weeds and soil depletion.

So its trees, trees and more trees. Trees modify precipitation patterns. Trees make rain. According to a WWF report (Rain farming, drought assistance for tomorrow, 2018), ‘they pump water from deep in the ground through the roots and trunk and out through leaves. Water vapour released from leaves lifts biological particles from leaves high into the air. Raindrops form around these, making clouds’.

For all of the great work that the hinterland's Landcare workers have done, there is a lot more to do. By some estimates, around 90% of trees were cleared around the Maleny area alone during the last century.

Landcare groups such as Barung Landcare have made heroic gains in re-vegetating some of this cleared land.

Particular mention must be made to the re-vegetation strategy that has been used.

Cloud forests are exceptionally good at combating the effects of climate change. A goal of many Landcare workers is to see the cloud forest re-established in the hinterland. Long-term residents have spoken of the time when moist forest characterised by frequent cloud cover, was a frequent event in the higher altitudes of the hinterland.

Obviously it is impossible for the region to revert to the pre-European settlement state of near 100% sub-tropical rainforest. However, volunteer groups such as Hinterland Bush Links have been incredibly successful in using tactical plantings to connect areas of forest to provide corridors.

These corridors are invaluable for wildlife to survive and prosper. It is not by accident that in Maleny, visitors can enjoy their morning coffee or evening meal while watching platypus in the wild in the waters of the Obi Obi creek.

Rehabilitated riparian zones have improved the quality of water in our dams, forest restoration has enhanced biodiversity across the region, and rainforest endemic to South East Queensland has been restored.

Australia's hottest and driest year on record was 2019, and the bushfire season started two months earlier than ever seen before with a greater intensity.

Seed banks, so vital to ongoing protection of the region's biosphere, have been amassed and native vegetation has returned to land cleared of weed infestation.

The hinterland just managed to escape the type of serious fire that destroyed 21% of Australia's forest and killed around 3 billion native animals. Complacency is no longer an option. A warmer climate means that it’s a case of when our region will burn, not if.

This cloud forest comes with its own built-in weather system and moisture can persist for weeks after lowerlying areas have long dried out. There are still instances of cloud forest in the hinterland but it is too early to say whether large-scale comeback will occur.

The hinterland's Landcare workers are leaders in combating climate change and are rightly proud of their achievements. The region is still one of the most biodiverse in the country. We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

For young people not yet of voting age, this was an opportunity and so they created 10,000 activity books, each carrying a postcard which can be sent to Scott Morrison asking him to build their future on renewable energies, not on fossil fuels.

“We have produced the books using our own funds,” said Helen, “and it is hoped that many postcards will reach the prime minister - alerting him not only to the voices of our youth, but also that public opinion holds similar passionate sentiment.

“Time is running out.”

Jim and Helen believe that young people may succeed where the adults are failing.

Broaching the climate Echidnas on the move

ow to broach global warming with kids? Sunshine Coast Parents for Climate Action member, Nell Azuri, is a trained facilitator of climate conversations for Climate for Change, and she gave me this advice, sourced from the Australian Psychological Society:

his time of year, one of Australia’s oddest animals is on the move – the echidna.

Children are likely to be ready for slightly more complex explanations around school age: “There’s a blanket of gas around our planet, which is a good thing, because it keeps our planet warm.

But when we use electricity, more gas is made, making the blanket thicker. It’s getting too thick, and the planet is getting warmer than we want. So that’s why we try not to use too much electricity.”

Even young children might be quite concerned about climate change because of what they have seen in the media, or things people have said. Try to monitor

what they watch, and discuss anything worrying they see or hear.

Validating their feelings, encouraging any questions they have and keeping a reassuring tone will go a long way to helping them feel safe.

Be ready to answer questions in a way that is both honest and hopeful: “The truth is that no-one knows what is going to happen. But people all around the world are coming up with amazing solutions to the problem.”

Share inspiring stories like the ones in the movie 2040, and brainstorm with kids about what actions they can take.

months until it starts to develop spines.

Then the echidna will leave the puggle in a hollow log, pile of mulch, a burrow or any suitable sheltered space. This parenting process can last up to nearly a full year.

Think of wildlife before you do any backyard burns.

Echidnas may be sheltering in a wood stack pile in your garden. Ideally start a small fire next to your burn pile and feed the sticks and logs onto the smaller fire. If not possible, start burning from one side of the stack of timber to allow an escape route for any wildlife.

As the days grow colder and we are tempted to stay inside, echidnas are at their most active. MidMay to early September is mating season for this spiky species. Male echidnas are roaming about seeking females to mate with, and when they do, there’s competition.

“It can be difficult to know how to talk about climate change with our young children, particularly if we are worried ourselves. For very small children, simply encourage a love of nature through spending time in wild places and getting involved in a garden.

“Explain environmentallyfriendly actions you take: ‘Let’s get this one that isn’t wrapped in plastic. That makes less waste’.”

Echidnas often form what is called a ‘train’ as multiple males will line up and follow a female around for up to six weeks until she’s ready to mate.

Echidnas are found around the entire country, and there are almost certainly a lot more of them around than you think.

The echidna is a monotreme; an egg-laying mammal. After mating, the female echidna will lay a single egg that it will store safely in a pouch-like fold that it creates by contracting muscles in her abdomen.

The egg will hatch after between 10 and 36 days and the baby puggle will remain in the pouch for approximately 2.5

If you find an echidna in your yard, the best thing you can do is to leave it alone for a while. It will move on if it feels unsafe. Echidnas are resilient creatures but their young are extremely vulnerable, so this is the best way we can ensure the species carries on strongly.

There’s only one other monotreme species on the planet, one that on the surface looks like it couldn’t be any more dissimilar to echidnas: the platypus. But that’s another story.

Constant Change C hange is always with us. Our ancestors did not arrive in a ‘pristine’ environment, but in one that had been managed for tens of thousands of years by our First Nations people.

Each area would have been managed according to desired outcomes, vegetation types, climatic influences and many other factors based on observation and passeddown knowledge.

Our early explorers may have had limited botanical knowledge and those who came after them to clear and settle the land, probably less.

Species selection for our own relatively small patches are best guesses based on observation of the nearest patches of relatively undisturbed bush or forest.

Availability can be based on seed sourced in a particular year when seed and fruit were in abundant supply, possibly not quite within our locality.

And then there may be a small number of that particular species with a suspected lack

of genetic diversity in our area. Do we collect from further afield on the assumption that pre-clearing, it was more widely dispersed?

We revegetators face quite a few challenges in a constantly fluid environment, within a changing climate.

Natural hybridisation presents another challenge, especially with grevilleas. Grevillea banksii which can self-seed into bushland will hybridise with several of the larger species and these hybrids are a concern in some Victorian national parks and no doubt our own.

However, we still get on with the job of revegetating the landscape for the benefit of our precious wildlife, to hold the soil and store carbon and enjoy the fruits of our labour. We accept the challenges and gain so much from the results.

A recent survey by Landcare Australia suggested that involvement in Landcare led to substantial improvements in our own wellbeing and led to significant savings from avoided healthcare costs.

We gaze through binoculars at the small island 500 metres off the shore. A flock of Metallic Starlings wheel in formation in the last rays of the sun. They swoop low, bank and climb with a precision that would make any water ballet team weep.

Life

More and more birds join the flock which continues to circle, climb and swoop over the island. Thousands of dots swirl; a cloud of birds, a galaxy, swelling, stretching, soaring.

t dawn we sit quietly beside the waterhole at Trephina Gorge in the East McDonnell Ranges waiting for the show to start. The orange-red cliff face , like a backdrop at the opera, reflects across the mirrored surface of the water.

I raise my binoculars to the moon’s Sea of Tranquility. This is how Galileo must have seen the moon those few short years ago. Still the starlings swirl as the light fades into darkness.

An overture of Zebra Finches buzz down to the water’s edge to drink. In ones and twos, ruby-red Painted Finches nervously join them before retreating to the safety of the cliff.

To become a twitcher all you need to do is: 1. Obtain a pair of binoculars

A synchronised flock of yellow and green budgies whirr overhead, inspecting the waterhole, too nervous to land. They circle, slow, almost land before accelerating again.

2. Purchase a Field Guide of Australian Birds 3. Start making a numbered list of all the birds you see in ‘the wild’.

Several times this manoeuvre is repeated before they settle to drink for a second. With a whirl of wings they are gone, leaving the stage empty and the audience able to breathe once more.

Mist shrouds Sherbrooke Forest. The Lyrebird’s fanned tail feathers shimmer in the early morning light. Pure, strong notes fill the mountain auditorium. His repertoire is prodigious and no bushland sound is overlooked.

Calls of Whipbirds, Whistlers, Kookaburras and Cockatoos are all perfectly presented. Encores are freely given before the maestro bows and steps off his display mound; the world’s greatest song and dance artist.

On a platform perch high in the Cape York rainforest, the male Riflebird raises his head and calls his wares. He calls again. A fawn-coloured female appears at the end of the bough; shy and hesitant.

His jet-black breastplate feathers glisten blue/green. No prince in all his glory was ever more be-jewelled. Like two satin fans he flicks open his wings, holding them high above his head.

Flamenco style he prances forward. She retreats. He prances back. She follows. They mate; the baton of life passed on.

How many aeons of evolution have we just witnessed? She flies off and within seconds the male bird is calling his wares again. What a gigolo. He’ll do nothing to help raise his offspring.

At dusk we sit on white coral sand. Palm fronds rustle. Already a full moon has risen, tugging at the tide as it has done daily for the last three-and-a-half billion years. We are dots on a beach, on a coast that stretches to infinity.

Soil moisture is crucial for plant establishment, the roots of your planted stock need to quickly move from the confines of the potting mix that they have been established in and into the soil (and moist soil is crucial for this process).

For the bulk of the year when the high temperatures are below thirty degrees and the soil that you’re planting into is mulched you may find that you don’t need to water

after planting. I often time my plantings at home for rainy days and save having to water at all (with the added benefits of a mud bath by the end of the day).

In your garden you’ll probably have access to unlimited water for most of the year, so maintaining soil moisture is not an issue, just make sure you don’t over water and drown your plants, you need moist not wet.

The risky time for soils drying out is spring and early summer, but we do generally get just enough rain and mulching keeps soils moist and cool even when temperatures get over the mid-30s.

If you live in a frost-prone area (usually gullies and valleys), then frost is perhaps the biggest obstacle to establishing plants at this time of year. A year or two of good growth can be burnt or damaged if a severe frost hits.

t was immensely gratifying recently to carry out a tree assessment/property visit for a long-standing client of 13 years. I was able to inspect pruning cuts that I performed 13 years previously and monitor how the wound closure was progressing.

More than that however, the visit gave me a perspective on the process of caring for and managing people’s trees that I hadn’t had before.

It is really quite a simple process, one that involves having a competent arborist assess the trees and shrubs on your property and then carrying out the recommended work. This keeps the trees healthy, beautiful, and most importantly, safe.

Trees are an incredible asset to have on your property. Financially, properties that are treed with safe, managed, beautiful trees are valued much higher than comparable properties, and leafy suburbs have higher house prices than those without trees.

But beyond that they contribute so much to the living amenity of your property. Because they are literally giant water columns they moderate the temperature, keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Best Time to Plant hen is the best time to plant in the hinterland?” is a question I often hear (and although it could be rightfully pointed out that I have a conflict of interest being in the nursery business), my answer is that on the hinterland, with the benign climate that we are blessed with, there’s no time better than the present, but as always there are a few important factors to take into consideration.

Strategically positioned, they can block cold winter winds and harsh summer sunlight.

Not all plants are frostsensitive and we have many frost-hardy local natives that can be planted any time of year. Even frost-sensitive plants can be planted once the threat of frost has been beaten by the shade and protection of more frost-hardy species.

Managing your trees is not something you have to do very often. My last visit to this property was in 2017, and now things are just showing signs of needing a light trim, and it gets easier to manage the trees each time, as we can work to a program.

Frost damage in our area primarily occurs due to the plants thawing too fast when the sun hits them first thing in the morning. Planting very frosty areas in spring, after the last frost, can be beneficial to establishing your stock as it allows the maximum growth period before the next frost hits.

Investing in the Sunshine State

uyers near and far are recognising the myriad benefits associated with purchasing rental properties in the Sunshine State. In fact, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics lending indicators, the value of new loan commitments to Queensland investors is the highest in four years.

Sales agents from across the state report strengthening investor activity from local residents as well as from buyers from intra- and inter-state. Some of the many reasons why more investors are purchasing in Queensland are due to the more affordable buy-in prices compared to southern states, but also because of the healthy rental yields that can be achieved.

Consider that in Sydney the gross rental yield is just 2.4 per cent for houses, but in Brisbane it’s 4 per cent, and higher again still in regional Queensland at 4.9 per cent.

Likewise, when it comes to units, our affordability is far

greater than many other capital cities.

A rental yield is generally the difference between the overall costs of a property and the rental income that it returns. In Queensland, weekly rents have been increasing strongly over the past year.

This is due to the ongoing under-supply of rental properties, coupled with an increase in the number of people moving here from interstate and the reduction in the volume of people leaving for other states.

According to the REIQ’s latest Queensland Market Monitor, the vast majority of major locations around the state experienced robust rental price growth over the past year due to these factors.

Regional areas saw rents increase sharply with vacancy rates falling to record lows in some areas. The vacancy rates on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast

are just 0.6 per cent and 0.5 per cent respectively, as an example. These percentages represent critically undersupplied rental markets, which is unlikely to change significantly for some time.

The lack of available of rental properties has resulted in rents soaring in these locations. The median weekly rent for a two-bedroom unit on the Sunshine Coast increased 7.9 per cent to $410 between December last year and the year prior. And the median weekly rent for a three-bedroom house grew by 6.5 per cent to $490 over the same period.

While the increase in the number of investors active in markets across the state will add some much-needed rental property supply, there’s no question that the fundamentals of investing long-term in the Sunshine State remains sound.

Grandpa Eddie

“O

h yes” Mum says, as she parks the car in the garage, “there’s a surprise waiting for you in the house.”

I fling the door open and look around the house. I really hope the surprise is something good enough to cheer me up after a rough day of high school. Then I hear a loud crash and a familiar voice yells, “Ouch my ribs!”

I race into the lounge room. I see Grandpa clutching his side.

“Oh, hi Grandpa Eddie.’’ I am a bit disappointed that this is the surprise, but I am happy to see Grandpa. “Are you ok?’’ I ask.

“Sure, I am, just knocked over the lamp,’’ he says as he stumbles over to me. “Look at you, taller than me now,’’ he remarks as he wraps his arms around me. Grandpa is right about me being taller than him, he’s only up to my shoulder.

That night I walk into my room and Grandpa is standing in there looking around. “This looks nothing like my room when I was sixteen,” he chuckles.

I pretend to laugh. Duh, it looks nothing like his room when he was sixteen, he’s like eighty, so when he was my age a television and PS4 probably weren’t invented. Then Grandpa points to an air mattress on the floor next to my bed. ‘’We’re sharing a room for the week,’’ he says happily.

There is no way I am getting any sleep in my room.

Grandpa is snoring so loud that I could still hear him even when I am listening to music with my noise-cancelling earphones.

I walk downstairs. It is freezing and I am hungry.

I look around the kitchen for something to eat. There

is Grandpa’s chocolate cake, but he loves his morning cup of coffee and slice of cake so he probably wouldn’t appreciate me picking at it.

Then I feel something soft brush past my leg. ‘’Ah!’’ I yelp as I jump back. Woof! Woof! ‘’Oh, it’s only you, Buddy,’’ I whisper in relief. ‘’You have to keep quiet, everyone else is asleep.’’

Buddy takes his focus off me and stares at the bench.

I turn around, ‘’Buddy that’s Grandpa’s cake,’’ I whisper. He doesn’t seem to care.

He leaps onto the bench and darts towards the cake. ‘’No boy!’’ I hiss as I try to grab him, but I slip on a teaspoon and land on my back on the floor.

I quickly pull myself up off the floor.

Buddy has almost licked all the fluffy chocolate icing off the top of the cake! ‘’Bad dog!’’ I hiss. ‘’That is chocolate and you’re a dog so you’re probably going to die, and what will I tell Grandpa!’’

Buddy leaps off the bench and runs out of the room. Thick dog slobber is smeared across the top of Grandpa’s cake.

Suddenly I have an idea. I race around the kitchen and grab a can of spray cream and spray the whole lot into a bowl. Next, I put a cup of Milo into the bowl and mix it together. The last step is spreading it across the top of the cake. It doesn’t quite look like the original icing, but it will have to do.

The next morning Grandpa is up to his third piece of cake. I, however, have not even touched my first piece (for obvious reasons). ‘’Ahhhhhhhhhh,’’ says Grandpa. ‘’This cake is so interesting, it’s sweet and then there is a hint of beef or something.’’ More like dog food! I think as I try my hardest not to gag. ‘’Eat up Gregory,’’ says Grandpa cheerfully. ‘’No thanks,’’ I say ‘’I feel more like toast this morning.’’

Grandpa shrugs. ‘Suit yourself,’’ he says as he helps himself to my piece.
