A favourite saying in our house is ‘we shall see’. Whatever transpires, these three words remind us that every circumstance (whether we perceive it as ‘good’ or ‘bad’) can be observed objectively as a chance to grow: mentally, physically, or spiritually.

Mungo MacCallum

Thank you, Mungo

F

or the last time, we are printing the familiar picture of Mungo MacCallum, which has graced the pages of the Hinterland Times for over 10 years. We were very sad to hear of Mungo’s passing on December 9, 2020, at 78 years old. Indeed, just a few days earlier he had sent us an email (along with the other publications who used his work) to say he was stepping down.

Mungo MacCallum spent decades covering politics for mastheads, such as the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian, along with writing essays and books, plus a weekly column for the Byron Shire Echo.

Although we had a few emails or letters over the years of complaint, we had more which were full of praise, and here we include a handful of the many emails appreciating Mungo.

Mungo divided opinion, but there was no doubting his intelligence, humour and ability to see past the smoke and mirrors of politics in the monthly column he sent us.

I want to thank you for continuing to publish Mungo MacCallum’s columns. What a joy!

His observations were, for many, a refreshing antidote to many other papers. One didn’t always have to agree with everything he wrote, but he certainly knew how to call the government to account!

That’s all she wrote. I never thought I’d say it, but I can no longer go on working. It takes all my effort to breathe and I’m not managing that too well. And now my mind is getting wobbly – hard to think, let alone concentrate. So I am afraid there is not much point in continuing to push the rock up the hill. I shall retire to my Lazy Boy recliner, and doze over the television watching (or not) old sporting replays, propped up by drugs, oxygen and the occasional iced coffee. I am rapidly winding down. I am sorry to cut and run -- it has sometimes been a hairy career, but I hope a productive one and always fun. My gratitude for all your participation. (He added a brief 'seasonal Hallmark message' to 'ScoMo'.) Thank you and good night.

I look forward each month to reading his perceptive and often acerbic comments. Patricia C., Crystal Waters One can rightly understand the polarisation Mungo must at times generate, but to respond to the other side and negate his voice would be to ‘turn to the dark side, Luke’. I for one other, revel in his intelligent discourse each month. Brad D, Montville I love Mungo’s irreverent iconoclastic rants! It’s so refreshing to read a different opinion. Fiona M., North Maleny Given that most major newspapers impose so much “propaganda” on their luckless readers, the presence of Mungo in the HT gives the reader a challenge to question that daily diet. I say MUNGO, not MUMBO! Bruce J., Maleny I will certainly miss his unique political commentary in future editions. He had no fear nor favour, if it was deserved anyone would get a dose! Chris R. Rest in Peace, Mungo – you will be greatly missed at the Hinterland Times. *Michael Leunig pays tribute to Mungo on our Letters page.

Cheers Mungo

In last month’s interview with Rob Outridge of the Maleny IGA, he shared some information about local charity ‘endED’, which we subsequently mentioned in the paper. ix years ago, Mark Forbes and his wife Gayle were living in their dream house in Buddina, but this has now all changed. “The house is still a sore point,” Mark quipped. They have five children between them, and two of them had eating disorders – something that happened before they all lived together. “My daughter had bulimia since she was 16, she’s now in her 40s, and Gayle’s daughter developed an eating disorder at 14,” explained Mark. After attending a visiting organisation’s course on eating disorders (EDs), Gayle suggested the couple have an ‘open house’ every second Wednesday to support parents and carers of children with EDs. “After all, if they are struggling, how can they look after their own kids?” said Mark, and the charity ‘endED’ was created. “The medical system is failing our kids,” Mark continued. “Eating disorders take up just 1% of a doctor’s training, so how are they supposed to deal with it effectively? It’s not their fault, it’s the regime they are stuck in.” The couple also realised that there was no specific place in Australia helping people with eating disorders or offering support for their families and carers. “It’s pretty crazy that we don’t,” said Mark. “In the States there have been residential programs running for 25 years, and there are over 50 of them!”

In researching eating disorder facilities, Mark and Gayle found the Carolyn Costin Institute, a residential treatment centre in Monte Nido, California, run by Carolyn. “We explored using this model and tried to find some land to build our vision. Millie Thomas heard of what we were doing and reached out to help. Millie battled anorexia nervosa for 15 years and is now fully recovered – she was keen to give support and guidance to other eating disorder sufferers.” Gayle and Mark sent Millie to the USA to research Carolyn Costin’s program and existing facilities. “We then had architects Blackburne Jackson in Maroochydore offer to design our facility for free, which was amazing.”

Mark began the search for a perfect site, but nothing had the ‘wow’ factor. Then came Mooloolah…“I drove into the acreage and went ‘this is it’ immediately! We asked for a six-month contract, which was agreed, but only if it was unconditional. So, we had to sell Gayle’s dream Buddina house.” Mark found great support from Andrew Wallace who is now a patron of the charity, and Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, “He gave two million towards the project and introduced us to local philanthropists, Roy and Nola Thompson. “After a chat with them, Roy asked for my business card, then handed it to Nola and said, ‘Nola, we’ve just bought this guy’s business card for a million dollars.’ “With the funds in place we had Zoom meetings critiquing the plans with Carolyn and Bruce (her husband). They even came over and walked through the build.” The 13-bedroom residential space finished construction in August 2020. “We asked the local elders of the Kabi Kabi nation to walk the property, and to name it - they chose Wandi Nerida, which means gather together and blossom.” Mark added, “The Sunshine Coast community has been amazing: BA Murphy’s built it at cost for no profit, we had civil engineers, electricians, consultants and businesses all helping for free or very little.” The Butterfly Foundation Australia have become the operators of Wandi Nerida, and Mark and Gayle have moved on to their new project the ‘endED House of Hope’ in Woombye.

“It’s an eight-bedroom house on acreage, and we plan to run support groups and workshops for parents and carers and sufferers,” explained Mark. “It will also be a transitional house for those leaving the residential program at Wandi Nerida, and businesses we’ve worked with will provide a support network and job experience for those in need.” In a serendipitous moment recently, Mark and some of those involved with House of Hope saw the ‘Hope’ sculpture at Sculpture on the Edge, by Sophy Blake, and Mark promptly bought it, to take pride of place in the garden of this new healing space. “We ran our first support group from the property on December 14, but we need to employ more livedexperience recovery coaches, as our team of three are wonderful but swamped with cries for help. “We are already holding fundraisers, such as endED golf days within Glasshouse, a race day at Caloundra Turf Club, the endED 150 club, where for $150 a month a business is promoted through our social media, and we’re developing a school discussion program.” Support has come from all over, including Mooloolah Valley Country Club, BCU Maroochydore, and Dave Matthews of Hot 91.FM, who has created a podcast on eating disorders with Millie, who does the interviews. “It’s a library asset now, being viewed from 30 different countries,” shared Mark. Before I left, we shared a few stories about the negative impact of areas of the media on young (and some middle-aged) people – the obsession with body image, the heightened sexuality at an increasingly young age, the cruelty of social media. Mark has spoken to the

father of an eight-year-old boy who had body issues – it’s starting younger and younger. “How parents talk about body image, including their own; how they check in on what their kids are watching, it’s all important,” Mark said. “But if someone already has an eating disorder, we want to help them overcome it, because it is possible. “The best thing I heard recently was a young person who came to us and said, ‘I don’t have to go through this alone’. That’s why we’re here.” If you’d like to know more about the work Mark, Gayle and their team are doing, or to donate, visit ended.org.au

he eldest of three children, Jared’s start to life was not easy. At around age eight, his parents divorced, the unhappy circumstances leaving Jared and his siblings in the care of his grandparents, Nan and Grandad Ellis. “They (Jared’s parents) each went their own way and we decided to stay with our grandparents because of schooling and other issues,” says Jared. “Nan and Grandad have done a wonderful job of raising us,” he says, sadly noting that his grandfather has recently passed away. His fondness for the old chap was clear as he turned away to suppress some tears. After graduating from Maleny High School, Jared started work at Maleny Mitre 10 where he still works. But by then, he was already ensconced with the Maleny SES, having become involved in 2005. “I was approached by Lloyd Larney (Group Leader of the Maleny SES) in the day to join as a younger member and see what it was like. I was hooked within the first night, and I’ve not looked back since. “I would have been 16–17 years of age at the time. And then I joined the Rural Fire Service about two or

three months after and I was told by my dad ‘never to join the Rural Fire Service because it wouldn’t be something you’d like’. And I’ve proved him wrong in many ways!” While at high school, Jared, like most teenage boys, took an interest in girls and had girlfriends, but something deep inside him just “didn’t feel right”. With no one to turn to for help, he kept his feelings to himself. Sometime around year eleven or twelve, he realised he was attracted to other males. “Then I went, okay, this is not right, something’s going on here. It just twigged straight away.” Although Jared realised he was gay, living in a small country town meant he found it extremely hard to come out, because there weren’t the same levels of support that there are today. Interestingly, he admits he wasn’t teased or bullied, but in a more distressing way, he persecuted himself. “I was holding my feelings at ransom instead of being out there and being joyful, because I didn’t know how it was going to react with people knowing who I was back then. “Before I knew that support was there, I found it extremely hard and when I came out it was a big relief off my shoulders.

“But there were times that I didn’t feel comfortable doing that and it just made me miserable and when I came out it was the best feeling – the relief, and I knew that I had that support from other members in the community that felt that same way.” Happily, Jared and his partner Chris have now been in a committed relationship for ten years. In demonstrating the typical generosity of his nature, Jared has since started to help others to come out, supporting friends by being present when they nervously announce their sexuality to their family. “In that role now I’ve done a course with the LGBTIQ Community and become an ‘ally’, so I’m also a person that someone can come up to and talk about what’s going on. And I can actually relate to them and say, right, we’re here to help you, and do things like that.

“I’ve now also got that qualification through Fire Services and SES and I will always be there to help someone if that’s necessary.” With such a soft side, it’s not surprising that Jared loves kids and would dearly love to have his own one day. In the meantime, he and Chris are devoted ‘uncles’ to a friend’s toddlers who are just growing up too quickly.

“I look after all the sporting events wherever or whoever requires services. I’ve got advanced care and patient care. I’ve learnt most of that through Rural Fires and SES and some external paths.” When it comes to patient care, Jared has further ambitions to develop his skills and maybe fulfil one of his teenage desires to work as a paramedic or in a hospital, but that plan is still in progress.

As students and teachers return to Palmwoods State School at the end of the month there will be a notable sense of something missing; the familiar and friendly presence of Allan Petts. After 11 years as Deputy Principal of Palmwoods SS Allan closes the book on a rewarding and successful 38-year long career as an educator. After spending time with Allan and other members of the Palmwoods SS community it became very clear that this is a man who will be sorely missed and dearly treasured by many.

“He’s a bit like the Good Samaritan,” added Peter. “He’s always trying to find the good in things and finds ways that we can do what we need to do in a supportive manner. He’s always positive and always optimistic.”

PANDEMIC

Colleague Chris Poingdestre, who has been at Palmwoods SS since Allan started said, “As well as his deputy principal role, Allan spends time away managing school sporting teams, running before and after school activities, and even helping staff members move house on the weekend.

PROPERTY PRICES How things have changed this year! In March 2020, Covid - 19 put the world economy into the most vulnerable position since the GFC. The Australian Government pumped billions of dollars into our economy through various schemes to prevent an economic meltdown. State governments imposed rigid border closures to prevent mass outbreaks of the virus throughout the community.

“He is always good to have a chat to and rarely have I had a conversation that doesn’t involve a good laugh. I am sure many staff members will say the same thing.” Both Peter and Chris mentioned Allan’s involvement and enthusiasm for sport. Allan coached and managed the Sunshine Coast Primary Boys Touch Football teams for 19 years and enjoyed a two-year stint with the Queensland representative team. He was made a LifeLong member of Queensland 10-12 Years Touch. After announcing his retirement Allan was flooded with emails of gratitude and congratulations from parents of Palmwoods State School. They shared fond memories of ways he had helped them and touched the lives of their children. One mother recounted her first memory of Allan as he helped carry her baby to her car. Another shared how after taking a tour of the school with Allan they felt at ease with their decision to make the big move from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast. Parent Kerrie Russell summed it up nicely when she said he had been “the face of Palmwoods State School.” With a warm smile, a welcoming “hello” and often with his Border Collie, Zep, in tow, Allan’s presence infused a feeling of care and kindness throughout the

Helen and Allan Petts with their children Abbie and Lachlan, and their much-loved Border Collie, Zep

school. Without doubt, this is what will be missed by most. Allan shared how he came to make the difficult decision to leave a job he loved so much. “Although I am still active and enjoy my sports, I have had a couple of health scares in the previous two years. “I felt it was time for me to take a rest from work and concentrate on my health and well-being so that I can enjoy what the rest of life brings. We want to travel and spend time with family while we are able to do so in good health.” When I asked him what he will miss the most he said, “It will most definitely be the daily contact with staff, students and families. I will certainly miss not being part of their lives at school. I have had so much fun with the students and that is something I will really miss.” The influence of a great teacher is immeasurable. We may not always remember the lessons they taught, but what we do remember is how they made us feel.

Allan Petts with some of his Palmwoods State School students

As he retires and moves on to the next stage of his life, Allan Petts leaves behind a legacy of kindness, care and an enthusiasm for learning that will be treasured in the hearts of all those who have known him.

In March 2020 when the pandemic struck, some property experts predicted price falls ranging from 20% to 30% across the country. This prediction was supported by the follow on from the Banking Royal Commission which had indicated there were 650,000 property loans in Australia that needed to change from “Interest Only” to “Principal plus Interest”. Few allowed for Federal Government funding injections of around 500 billion dollars plus pressure on banks to “ease” lending criteria! The great news is, since early September 2020, the property market on the Range has boomed with price increases across the board ranging from 10% to 25%. Pressure from city-based buyers wanting to live in our beautiful region has become intense and why not! From rust bucket to road runner! eastonlawyers your local lawyers

Serendipity is defined as chance, luck or fate and for one vintage motoring enthusiast it was definitely a case of all three that brought him to the restoration of a 1923 Fiat. Des Donnan in his Fiat and Geoff Hocking at the window

WHAT ARE YOUR REFUND RIGHTS? Every now and then you might want to return a particular purchase to the store for a refund or exchange but you might be confused about your legal rights. Your confusion is undoubtedly increased when you see stores displaying signage stating that the store will not give a refund for certain items. Items where I have sometimes seen ‘no refund’ signs are on products such as sale items, swimwear, sunglasses, or opened products. These signs are misleading. Although retailers do not have to exchange or refund perfect goods, they cannot contract out of their obligation to provide you with a refund if the goods or services that you purchased: • Have a fault that you could not have known about at the time of purchase; • Are not the same as the description provided by the salesperson or advertisement; • Do not match the sample you were shown at the time of purchase; and/or • Do not do the job as you were led to believe. You are not entitled to a refund if you: • Simply change your mind or no longer want the goods; • Realise you can’t afford the goods;

t 81 years young Des Donnan is a member of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club and has restored around 12 cars over the past 40-50 years. “I have a particular interest in European and English cars. I really enjoy the vehicles from the 1920s and 1930s. “I also have a 1935 Alvis Speed 20 Coupe that belonged to my father until I bought it from him in 1965. I have owned it ever since and have restored it twice. However, the Fiat is something very different.” The old Fiat had long lain abandoned in a paddock when it was gifted to Des as a restoration project by another member of the Horseless Carriage Club. Even with all his experience in restoring old cars, this one left Des scratching his head.

• Found the same item at a cheaper price elsewhere; • Chose the wrong size or colour; • Knew about the particular fault prior to purchase; and/or

Shop

“You see the car is a combination of timber and fabric as well as cast alloy parts. And all that was left were the cast alloy elements. It was a pile of rust, quite literally,” Des says with a smile. Des was not daunted by the project, but he knew he needed expert help in reassembling the vehicle. In a moment of kismet Des ran into his new neighbour Geoff Hocking and his wife, who were out walking their two dogs, and discovered that his project’s salvation was right under his nose. Geoff, it turned out, was an expert timber worker and was more than keen to come on board the Fiat’s restoration. “Geoff has done a brilliant job on the timber in this vehicle. Some of the work will be covered by fabric, but some, like the struts in the canopy will be visible and they are finished to such a high standard.

although it was designed for driving in the Alps, I’m not sure I would trust it on some of the steep downhill sections around here,” Des laughs wryly.

“In a way Covid -19 has been a godsend for this project, as it meant Geoff and I had the time to really keep working on the car. Something like this usually takes years to get to this stage. This has taken 12 months and is so close to completion now,” Des says proudly. The 1923 Fiat was a contemporary of the Model T Ford. It was popular in Australia with commercial travellers as it had a large boot space which was handy for samples. Each state in Australia had vehicle bodyfitting works, as the government had imposed taxes and tariffs on fully imported cars. This meant that car chassis were imported and fitted out in Australia. This particular vehicle was originally fitted out in the Holden Motor Body Builders in Adelaide. Unlike many other cars of its time it was fitted out in the Italian designed model with a single dicky seat and not the more usual double-width seat designed by local manufacturers. So, this car is even more unique. “Everything on the car body is made from plywood sitting on a timber frame,” explains Des. “The whole lot is then covered by a fabric. In this case it is a leather-look vinyl, which should make it a little bit weatherproof. However, it’s not really ideal to drive it in the rain. I can always take the Alvin in the case of a downpour,” Des laughs. “The Fiat also only has two wheels with brakes,

“A vehicle like this, restored to this standard, will one day be a museum piece. Although I will be passing this one on to my son who is also an enthusiast.

The beginnings of the timber frame of the Fiat

“The vintage car gene runs deep through our family, as even my granddaughter drives a vintage car. It’s something I think we got from my own father, as he always had vintage cars. “Modern day cars are not something I understand. With these old things you could look under a bonnet and know what you were looking at.” The cars from the 1920s and 1930s are also very beautiful, with their Art Deco lines. They are very much a product of the era with its appreciation of finely finished products, from cars to fashion to buildings. Everything was finished with a master’s eye for beauty. “The next generation of cars will all be electric and that is another big leap in technology. But I think that it is even more important than ever to be able to look back at these vehicles and see where they started. “Keeping our history alive and in good running order means it is tangible and the engineering of the day can still be appreciated,” Des smiles.

ucked away on the winding, tree-canopied road between Kenilworth and Maleny is Fig Tree Walk, an unexpected oasis of ancient trees and babbling brooks. You’d be forgiven for disregarding this unassuming walk, flanked by a busy road on one side and the Mary River on the other. The juxtaposition of a rainforest walk alongside a busy road is somewhat deceiving. Those who ignore doubt and delve into this section of Imbil State Forest will be rewarded with a serene 780m stroll. The moment you set foot on the track’s winding moss-covered path your ears fill with the melodic sounds of nature. Cicadas chant their strident song unseen in the surrounding trees while birds sing in succession, ostensibly transporting you deep inside a secluded rainforest. Dwarfed by an impressive array of endemic trees, the trail leads you on a leisurely loop past two mustsee centuries-old Moreton Bay Figs. The first just a few minutes in where you can experience an up-close look at their impressive buttress roots and marvel at the intriguing strangling-nature of these extraordinary trees. Using the canopy of a host tree, Moreton Bay Figs live as an epiphyte while establishing their roots, robbing the host of sunlight and nutrients as it slowly strangles

the tree to death. Witnessing the spectacular result of such an arrogate start to life, you can’t help but be in awe of nature. As such, this is the kind of nature walk most appreciated when you slow down. As you amble, play witness to the rainforest floor where you’ll find evidence of natural recyclers, insects and fungi who keep the forest’s cyclical ecosystem on-track. Observe the diverse riverine community, an array of birds and frogs living amongst a unique system of trees dissimilar to those at the forest’s centre. Around the halfway mark Fig Tree Walk’s most illustrious Moreton Bay Fig towers high, a pristine

stream framing its impressive stature. The stream fills and empties with the ebb and flow of the environment, running fast after periods of rain and parched with periods of drought. Crane your neck skyward to spot the host tree, swathed in the Fig’s oppressive roots. Considered a middle-aged tree, its host tree is still alive. For a short stroll through nature this walk has a meditative influence that arouses an appreciation for the hinterland’s remarkable biodiversity. One that can be appreciated at the adjoining park’s picnic tables, complete with a beautiful view of the Mary River.

Let’s Talk Business Martin and Lisa Rudd from Circuit Alert, Nambour

BLESSED EARTH This month our regular business Q&A is with Janine, owner of Blessed Earth, Maleny. This is a welcoming space full of organic bedding and clothing, eco-friendly products from body balms to magnesium oil, high quality cookware, garden products and much more. Best of all, this shop has an ethical, caring approach, valuing everyone, from makers and suppliers, to customers and staff.

Q

Where did you grow up?

A

I grew up in Cohuna, Victoria….. still growing up though!

Q

What made you move to the hinterland? Or, if you grew up in the area, what makes you

stay?

A

I love the ley lines and the crystal mountains.

Q

How long have you been running Blessed Earth?

A

Seems like forever, but we lost Rai a few years ago, so totally on my own since. (l think he still helps a lot though… ) Janine, Deborah and my daughter are amazing. We run it as a team along with our factories who are equally part of all we do. My brothers and Rachael also are involved and very helpful.

Q A

Shop assistant Janine from Blessed Earth, who enjoys working with owner Janine!

Why did you move premises?

We were having stock issues, and frustration with freight costs and so couldn’t fill two large spaces. This space is much better for us, and the layout is spacious and enjoyable to walk around browsing all our beautiful products and bedding.

Q A

Q

What did you do before this? Many things – teaching was the beginning, also some healing work. What do you enjoy the most about your business?

A

I enjoy working as a genuine team with all of the people who are genuinely interested in creating sustainability in all ways and who appreciate our contribution to organic and non toxic alternatives. We offer exceptional quality and beautiful and basic products to enhance the true nature of people. Our customers are the driving force in product development, and they reward us with loyalty and word-

of-mouth recommendations.

Q A

What does a ‘typical’ day entail for you? Making things work… checking everyone we work with is travelling well, and solving whatever we can if we can help.

There is the printing, packing and posting orders, stock control, ordering, answering customer emails, receiving deliveries… and lots of delegating! The website needs updating daily, there’s the admin, creating customer gift cards, team brainstorms, calling my mum, and, of course, drinking the delicious organic Botero coffee from our Marketplace Cafe!

Q

If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be?

Turn up and be prepared to navigate and solve whatever presents. Do what you do and don’t be too interested in what others are doing – unless you can pool your resources and create something amazing.

he RangeCare Cottage meals range has been revitalised! The new menu selection has been carefully created and tested by kitchen staff members Gemma Webster (Kitchen Coordinator) and Alex Lyle (Assistant Coordinator) with the support of a kitchen volunteer, Jen. All kitchen staff are long-term local residents on the Range and together they make up the RangeCare Flaxton kitchen team. “Over the last 12 months the kitchen has been significantly upgraded and the demand for our take home cottage meals has grown to accommodate more clients and community members,” said Gemma.

The cottage meals range is made from locally sourced produce, with a focus on nutrition. “RangeCare is a community organisation and so it is important to us to find creative ways to support our community including buying from local farmers and small businesses,” Gemma continued. The cottage range is an inclusive dining experience which caters to multiple dietary requirements. “Try our new meals such as crispy skinned lemon and herb roast chicken (gluten-free and dairy-free), Moroccan beef with sweet tomato and gravy (DF), Malaysian satay chicken (GF, DF) and spinach and ricotta cannelloni pasta,” said Gemma. All meals are delivered from Monday to Friday by wonderful RangeCare volunteers, all over the coast and hinterland. The RangeCare Cottage meals are available to purchase along with a selection of meals from their partners - The Barn on Flaxton, Le Relais Bressan, Café Mapleton and Clouds Montville. For more information or to place your order visit: rangecare.com.au/partner-meals-service or give them a call on 5545 7044.

lizabeth and Tony Craig-Holmes are adult educators, with a passion for creating experiences where individuals create their own learnings and memories. “Because of this, we decided to take the people and the plates to the place where the food is grown,” explained Elizabeth. “We set up our restaurant without walls, with five courses and paired wines. We ask our farmers to talk about some of their passion for what they do, the challenges they face to put food on our plates and how they see their future.

Kitchen coordinator Gemma Webster and Assistant Coordinator Alex Lyle, getting creative in the Flaxton kitchen

Where possible they source local produce from the immediate area around the farm, and create unique menus for each event to showcase this. The next Plate to Paddock event is on January 15, 6pm - 9.30pm, in Montville with Private Chef Alan Dawes. “Alan brings a depth of knowledge and skills gained through working with the best chefs in the UK, France and Australia. He creates simple, elegant and delicious dishes that showcase sensational produce direct from the supplier,” said Elizabeth.

“Basically we hope our guests go away understanding we need to look after our farmers. No farmers, no food.”

The venue is kept secret until the last minute. “Think amazing location, elegant table setting, comfy seating, relaxed dining, great conversation and laughter,” smiled Elizabeth.

These popular culinary experiences have one main aim, according to Elizabeth, “to showcase farmers and their produce’.

ike us all, the Flowerpot Coffee Shop’s owneroperator, Ally Bing, had an interesting past year. The little café, located squarely in the Village Green of the permaculture eco-village Crystal Waters near Conondale, had its second birthday back in March 2020 -- a month of many adaptations. In April, “there was one day when my co-worker and I looked at each other and knew we should close,” Ally says. “It wasn’t fun anymore.”

Scrummy mushrooms

The Flowerpot ended up closing one day prior to government restrictions mandating takeaway service only. The momentary stand-still is a phenomenon for which the year 2020 will be remembered. Ally remembers it as the spinning of a story, quietly coming to a halt. She thought of her café like a garden; it had grown so beautifully those past two years, and she wondered what it would take to build it back up.

Flowerpot Layer Cake

Ally Bing (centre) with some of her cherished team

She shouldn’t have worried. After two weeks, Ally reopened the Flowerpot on her own with a takeaway menu. The allowance of tables and chairs months later restored some normalcy and the atmosphere of community. The flora of the Flowerpot was slowly but surely restored by a community of kind-hearted and hardworking individuals, drawn in by the irresistible aroma of good coffee and by the desire to create, enjoy, and be together. As the Flowerpot goes into its third year of existence this March, it nods to the gardener who built a thriving garden on the Green and donates fresh greens, and to the teachers offering Covid-Safe Saturday yoga and Tuesday dance classes with the promise of a coffee after. To the community volunteers who applied for a $30,000 renovations grant and won for the Community Deck on which the Flowerpot exists, and to all who have been or may be inspired to add something beautiful, and something kind, into the energy and momentum of social enterprise. “For these people,” Ally says, “I am most grateful.” You can visit the Flowerpot Coffee Shop four days a week: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday, 9am – 2.30pm. Special Remembrance Ceremony There is a growing movement across Australia to acknowledge the realities of the frontier conflicts in our history. For several years now in Maleny, there has been a growing number of people, who have assembled on January 26 each year, who seek to face some of the human dimensions of those conflicts. A Ceremony of Remembrance honouring the First Peoples of this land, who lost their lives and country through the dispossession that began on January 26, 1788, will be held on Tuesday January 2, 2021, commencing at 10m. The Ceremony of Remembrance is to be held in the RSL Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny.

The Tiffany Lamp Man by Jacqui Hensel

S

itting unobtrusively in a well-lit area of the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group (MACG) workroom, Rob Kann has patiently spent a year cutting coloured glass into tiny shapes. The object of this activity is to reproduce a Tiffany style lamp. Tiffany’s Studio is a famous New York design studio that produces beautiful stained-glass work, and the first lamp appeared in 1893. The work is priceless and often appears in museum collections. For Rob, however the lamp brings back memories of childhood visits to his grandparents and in particular his grandmother. Their Chermside home was filled with beautiful pieces and Rob decided he would recreate a lamp so he could cherish the memories and have a beautiful lamp for his home. He was also inspired by his time working in Paris and the Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings that surrounded him. “Even the metro stations are Art Deco, it seeps into you, being surrounded by that beauty in functionality,” Rob reminisces. “I would never be able to sell my lamp, it’s too special and has taken so long to create. I’m looking forward to being able to switch it on of an evening and just enjoy it.” Rob trained in glasswork at the Brisbane Glass Guild three years ago and has produced other lamps, but nothing as intricate as the one he is working on now. His mentor was Jenny Keys who also loved Tiffany Lamps and Rob credits her with his own confidence to tackle such an intricate piece. “Since then I have been coming into the MACG each week to work on the glass cutting. It was so important for me to have somewhere as great at this to come and do my work. This is such a friendly and welcoming community. I feel very lucky to be a part of it all. “I live on my own and with Covid-19 reducing social contacts, this community became even more important to me,” Rob explains. “I moved up from Brisbane a few years ago. I was so drawn to the creativity and fellowship of the area. Of course, the climate is so much better. Brisbane was so hot in summer!” exclaims Rob. Rob’s patience is beginning to reap rewards as he is now on to the final assembly stage, soldering pieces together. Once the leading work is complete the treasured lamp will become a permanent fixture in his home. MACG can be contacted via email malenyartsandcraftsgroup@ gmail.com or further information can be found on the website: malenyartsandcraftsinc.com. Rob Kann has almost completed his Tiffany lamp

FLYING PORKY STUDIOS  Well known Montville residents, Jim Cox and Pam Maegdefrau, are opening their studios to visitors for three mornings this January, 2021. Both retired TAFE teachers in their field, they have contributed greatly to the creative environment of the Blackall Range since moving here in 2002, initiating and supporting local arts organisations. Jim paints, draws and sculpts, his draughtsmanship is superb, and his works are a personal diary, maybe politically or environmentally serious, or perhaps ‘just for fun’. His children’s Book of Krumple is for kids of ALL ages, with an important environmental message! He works in acrylic on canvas or framed ‘works on paper’ in gouache, watercolour or oil pastel. Clay is Pam‘s medium, mostly porcelain or terracotta and some white clays with coloured slips. Her unique Raku-fired, porcelain pieces are exquisitely crafted with subtle colours and textures (pictured). Pam has almost retired from making ceramics, so this present stock is possibly her last works. Downsizing their home, dictates a lifetime of collecting must be minimised. Books on art, wildlife and travel need new readers. Their own private art collections and those of colleagues must find new homes. If you would like to visit their Flying Porky Studios they will be open Sunday 10 , Tuesday 12 and Friday 15, from 9.30am to 1pm at 12 Tulipwood Court, Montville (off Honeysuckle) … follow the signs!

Remembering Mungo

Housing crisis hits locals

Report applauded

Mungo MacCallum was a uniquely intelligent man and a wonderful treasure - a very real and rare person; formidably articulate, witty and expressive yet utterly down to earth and entirely frank. It was indeed a great blessing and privilege to spend time on earth with him.

I recently read a study measuring the economic fallout of COVID-19, which showed homelessness will increase by 3.6%, with 11.4 per cent more Queensland households experiencing housing stress in 2021.

I welcome the Disability Royal Commission’s interim report on its first 15 months of operations.

We had many adventures together where I heard astonishing tales, learned much and grew up a lot. When in Canberra I often stayed at his home and was awakened by the haunting primal cries of his pet peacocks at night.

This is already being felt across the hinterland – friends I know in Maleny are desperately trying to find places to rent, as houses are being bought up for investment, and outof-state buyers looking to escape the city life.

There are many lessons to be learnt from the evidence shared with the Royal Commission by people whose lives have been impacted by violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. Abuse is not inevitable for people with disability and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

No doubt Mungo understood and sympathised with what these birds were expressing - because not only was he a truthful voice in the darkness himself, but he was a natural polymath and a prodigiously insightful philosopher.

The report shared that if the Federal Government invests $7.2 billion in social housing across the country, it could ‘make a serious dent in homelessness, turbocharge the post pandemic economy by $18.2 billion, and create 18,000 jobs per year over four years. In Queensland an investment of around $1.71 billion would create 5698 new homes.’

The report makes special note of the difficulties of reaching all people with disability who have experienced abuse.

It is said that he did not suffer fools, but I think it is also true to say that as a wise man in a world of mad fools, he probably suffered greatly.

This is surely vital?! Families are becoming homeless, people are living in caravans, tents or couch surfing because there is nothing available in their own home towns.

Thank you, dear Mungo, for your kindness and care and the raw unusual ways you expressed and lived these qualities.

One family I know in Palmwoods was told by their landlord they had to move out at short notice as he was selling his house. She and her family (and pets) are now living in a studio space a friend offered at the last minute, otherwise they would be on the street.

I acknowledge the courage of those who have already come forward and shared their experiences, and I applaud the commission’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and accessible environment for people who wish to disclose abuse.

Michael Leunig

For this reason, Endeavour Foundation continues to encourage all people with disability to contact the commission or an advocacy organisation that can assist them in doing so, if they wish to speak out.

The interim report highlights many of the far-reaching challenges people with disability experience, from policy and funding constraints, sector practices and interfaces with other mainstream services to a lack of understanding and undesirable community behaviour.

This is not good enough!! Why isn’t our government helping? It’s time they DO SOMETHING about this.

We all must listen to people with disability who are speaking out in the Royal Commission, so our nation can become a place where people with disability feel safe, valued, and free to live the lives of their choosing.

(The findings are in the Equity Economics report, Double return: How investing in social housing can address the growing homelessness crisis and boost Australia’s economic recovery.)

SPRING AT YARIDNI

THE CAT’S LAMENT

Spring creeps in slowly With the quiet assurance of a welcome guest. She spreads her warm arms over all living things Like a mother comforting her children And brings hope.

Should a bird come flying by I’ll fix it with my hungry eye I’d snatch it from the bounteous sky But this thick glass won’t let me try.

All new creatures feel her presence And bask languidly in her cosy warmth. The new lambs couched by this sense of wellbeing Gambol with gay abandon In the green lush pasture And grow strong.

HOT SUMMER Currawong on fence Ebony feathers, air ruffled Gasps in smoky dawn

The comfortable ewes watch lazily With a feeling of quiet pride And contentedly chew their cud – then pause They have known other Springs, other lambs And momentarily feel sad.

DANCERS Night time revellers Possums partying on my roof Show sleep no respect

The heavy red and white cattle Gaz idly across the still waters of the water hole, Their young have wandered away To explore the washaways And they worry not. The trees are stirred by the light zepher And their buds well with vigour As the warm sap spreads Through their waving limbs And bring life. The regimented rows of wheat and barley stand tall They also are touched by Spring’s gentle gingers Their protected milky seeds swell and fill They stretch and sway to reach the sun’s warmth And they feel power. We too are touched by her presence And feel peace. © Rhyllis Aitken

LOST PLEASURE The exquisite pleasure of a handwritten letter. The dip, the swirl, the scrawl that says so much about the writer. The art of graphology, slipping away as fingers now tap keyboards and individuality of form is lost. The unique joy of words crafted and scribed straight from the heart and mind to the page. Errors shown, thoughts laid bare, imperfect with no backspace to hide the rhythm and pace of the true moment in which the words were created.

The hint of mood or passion in clues from the pressure of the pen. The slant, the speed, an indication of character, of intention. The care, or lack of it, spilling across the page, whether with abandon, laziness or excitement. So much can be gleaned from a handwritten letter, So much is lost now the pen has been stayed. © V. Bensted

Freewill and Destiny

s we head into another year, are you wondering what 2021 will bring? Do you feel powerless and at the mercy of destiny or excited about new possibilities and plans? I don’t think anyone could have predicted the events of 2020 and, regardless of our individual situations, it affected everyone to some degree. However the responses varied from quietly enjoying the imposed time at home to feeling overwhelmed and stressed by all the changes that accompanied the Covid crisis.

People lost their jobs, had to home school children and some even ran out of toilet paper. While many lamented the loss of their ongoing daily activities, some took it as an opportunity to become more self-sufficient, planting veggie gardens and coming up with creative ways to entertain themselves. So how much is our destiny predetermined and how much do we have free will? While the events that are taking place now may seem to be beyond

our control, they are all a result of what we have done, collectively, in the past. Today’s free will determines tomorrow’s destiny.

recover, illustrates that despite the environmental problems in the world there is hope for improvement if we do something about it.

While animals are governed by the laws of nature, humans have the ability to act independently. However with this ability to choose comes the possibility to violate the laws of nature and create suffering and disharmony.

In order to lessen the effects of past actions we need to dissolve the stress that has accumulated as a result and expand our perception so we can see the bigger picture and make proactive decisions, instead of just waiting for the next set of challenges.

We may feel we have little choice in the direction our lives are taking and, yes, to some extent we are under the influence of the results of past actions. If you have a poor diet and never exercise, it isn’t really a surprise when you end up with health problems as you age. However each day brings us the ability to make the most of what we have. Even if you are plagued by health issues, you still have the choice in how you will manage them now and this will determine to what extent they will improve or get worse. Likewise the dramatic healing that took place all over the world when we stopped flying overseas, reduced industry and left nature to

The more traumatic the stress, the more it can limit us from moving on and experiencing positivity in our lives. People living with PTSD don’t feel they have the freedom to live how they would like and are weighed down by the impressions of past experience. To really feel free, the boundaries of the individual mind, complete with its hardwiring and preconceptions, needs to be transcended. This takes us out of the merry-go-round of negative thoughts and daily frustrations and gives us a new experience. Transcendental consciousness is beyond time and space, beyond boundaries of the self and, when stabilised over time, remains stable in the ups and downs of dynamic activity.

New Year, New You

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is characterised by an inability to fully recover after experiencing or witnessing a highly stressful or terrifying event. The condition may last months or years, with symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, heightened reactivity to stimuli, anxiety or depressed mood. Hayley Waylett shares her story on how being creative can ease symptoms and help you heal.

PTSD and creativity Check out the

H

ayley Waylett, of Chapter Two Interiors, never expected such a big reaction to her recent Facebook post on suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but she received a wave of responses.

“I shared how I was finding something I loved to do which was helping me through it, and I think people connected with that.” ‘Furniture upcycling and the love of all things vintage and quirky’ is the mission behind Hayley’s two stores in Maleny and Buderim. She loves to repurpose items, inspire creativity, and save objects from landfill at the same time. She also stocks a fabulous range of paints!

looking for items to push my own limits and that of the paint. Typewriters, old tools, etc. “I was constantly researching colours and techniques; even dreaming it! I researched so much that I must have a Masters degree in upcycling!” laughed Hayley “I then watched the film The Cove and it was a lightbulb moment ... ‘That’s it! I’ll paint and sell furniture with the proceeds going to Sea Shepherd.’ “I made little tags with ‘Ocean Vintage’ stamped on and did just that. I felt it gave me a purpose. Weirdly that week, two beautiful whale pictures came my way... if that’s not a sign!”

So how did it all begin? Hayley bought some furniture for another Mum to paint, but it never eventuated. “Oh, flipping heck, I’ll have a go myself then!” thought Hayley.

Hayley then began her Facebook page and tried blogging. “It was scary at first to talk to ‘thin air’ and expect a response, and because of the anxiety, I deleted so many posts out of sheer fear, but the nurse in me knew this creative journey was healing me and my journey could help others, which gave me courage.

“I didn’t want to, a busy life around four young kids, a new town and suffering PTSD. “I was a happy-go-lucky person who loved nothing more than a good laugh,” said Hayley. “Then I experienced a trauma and my whole world fell to pieces overnight. PTSD is extremely debilitating. At my worst I would look at bread and not even know how to make a sandwich” Hayley was exhausted putting on an ‘everything’s okay’ persona. “I stopped going out, which meant no socialising or sports with the kids. Helping gardens grow V

olunteer opportunities are growing at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens as the Friends of MRBBG prepare for a diverse program of activities in 2021, in partnership with Council. As they enter their twentieth year, the Gardens continue to capture the magic of our bushland and give meaning to our local flora. They achieve this through the diversity of interests and activities that connect plants and people everywhere - through arts and crafts, through education and science, ecology and horticulture. In 2020, volunteers completed a new rope bridge to the Whipbird Walk, started a new bush walk and prepared a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine project to start in 2021. Friends also conducted an information service and offered free guided walks on special topics, from rare and threatened species, to using local plants for developing better local gardens. Cr Winston Johnston tries out the new rope bridge - image Greg Miller ď‚

ď‚ Volunteer Guide Malcolm Cox, gives a tour to visiting Barung Landcare volunteers - image Greg Miller

Now they are looking for new volunteers to welcome and help visitors as the Gardens grow in 2021 and beyond. Plant knowledge and gardening skills are not necessary; time, a passion for the natural world and a drive to learn are enough.

Anyone can find at least one place to fill, from storytelling and website support to gardening, bushcare and wildlife surveys (including koalas). Of course, there are also social get-togethers and learning opportunities. Give it a try! I

t is pleasing to note that people do appear to be reading this column, and are getting their trees checked. We have just had yet another severe weather event in early December, with an attendant round of trees failures. It was the usual suspects, Eucalyptus species, and their partners in crime, Liquidambars, along with a few Coral trees, Erythrina sp. The Eucalypts just rolled right over, roots and all. This is common after a long period of dry weather and then a heavy rain event with wind. One specimen was 39 metres tall, although now it is just 39 metres long! The one in the photo was 1.3 metres thick at the base. One complexity is that they are an amazing habitat for unique creatures such as sugar-gliders and feathertail gliders etc., so the pruning option to keep them safe is a good one, but it can be more expensive. The fact that they are not endemic to the Plateau makes it easier to justify their removal in favour of the far less dangerous, and less common, rainforest species that do belong here. The Liquidambars tended to snap halfway up,or lose large sections. A big one came down on the playground in Tesch Park. I find a decent height reduction keeps them safe and looking good for about 8 years. Please acknowledge the beauty of your trees, and be alert to signs they may need attention. Touch trees!

It can be challenging to differentiate between very young Sugar and Squirrel Gliders. Sugar gliders are a smaller species, with a more squat face and often have a white tip on their tail which squirrel gliders don’t have.

Yolanda Dasgupta is a mum of two boys and a disaster-management expert. She is also a member of Australian Parents for Climate Action (AP4CA), a volunteer-run group of parents from around Australia who are advocating for a safe climate for our children’s future.

A

t the dawn of a new year and a new decade, I have found new sources of hope that we can turn the climate ship around and still avoid catastrophic warming. I feel hopeful seeing the Australian State Governments’ recent budgets that show that they have recognised the economic opportunity for Australia to become a renewable energy Superpower.

Gliders are typically brought in after a cat attack, entanglement on barbed wire or when the tree in their nest is felled or blown down. Sometimes Feathertail Gliders are rescued by members of the public who find what they think are babies that have fallen out of their nest and been abandoned. This isn’t always the case, however. Feathertail Gliders are only around 6.58cm long across the body as fully grown adults. They’re so small and light that they can nest in all sorts of unusual places, even being found nesting in the manes of horses, and have a fluffy, almost feathery tail which gives them their name. I learn so much about our beautiful wildlife every day, and I encourage everyone to learn as much as they can too. One day it might just save the life of one of a very unique wildlife.

Found an injured or sick animal? The HT recommends contacting one of the many wildlife rescue services across the Sunshine Coast, such as the following: Wildlife Rescue Qld 0478 901 801; WILVOs 5441 6200; RSPCA 1300 ANIMAL; Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital 1300 369652; Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre 5442 8057; Bat Conservation and Rescue 0488 228134; Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue 0423 618740/0431; Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast 0458 682 152.

Globally, many countries are taking bold action on global warming by focusing their Covid-19 recovery stimulus in ways that help their economies transition to net zero, including a new President assuming office in the US with strong commitments to climate action. On a personal level it’s time for a New Year’s resolution to reduce my own carbon emission further, and to continue to be a constructive activist to advocate for the systems-wide change that is needed to keep warming from becoming catastrophic. If you want a climate-friendly resolution that takes almost no time and costs nothing- read on! Climate action of the month: Take your money away from fossil fuels! What would you do if you had thousands of dollars that you could pull out of funding fossil fuels and put towards climate-friendly investments? Guess what? You probably do! One of the most powerful actions you can do in a matter of minutes is to change your Superannuation Fund to an ethical fund. Many of these ethical funds are outperforming their competitors. You can see reviews of funds on marketforces.org.au If you cannot change or do not wish to, let your Super fund know that you would like them to divest from fossil fuels. You can find Sunshine Coast Parents for Climate Action on Facebook or via ap4ca.org. We meet monthly on the second Tuesday of each month at Homegrown Café in Palmwoods for a casual and friendly get together complete with children’s activities and face painting.

Welcome 2021

It won’t apply to all plants as some are remarkably adaptable, but it’s worth looking for a local alternative.

W

ith 2020 over and recent really heavy rain, it’s definitely time to think about the coming year. The climate is already changing, and past history is not necessarily a guide to the future.

If you are undertaking a revegetation project, be wary of trees from north Queensland, as some spread their seeds and become weeds. Local is definitely best, tubestock establish quickly and are less expensive than larger plants.

However, some things don’t change and newcomers to the hinterland may be wondering what they have let themselves in for as they contemplate either new gardens or acreage properties, and observe the species diversity of our forests plus the inevitable weed growth.

Check the current Barung Nursery list and see the large range of plants available. Some species sell quickly. A really important aspect of any planting project is timing and that depends on rainfall and hence soil moisture levels, plus avoiding very hot sun on new plants.

It’s a challenge but a good one and there will be many rewards along the way. First, get to know the local species suited to your soil type. That may be the red soils of the plateau, the darker clay basalt derived soils often found on the eastern escarpment, or sandy more free draining soils. The nursery staff at Barung can assist with that.

Local plants are best adapted to the region and most likely to survive the vagaries of our climate. For those

native garden establishing a new garden, bear in mind that native shrubs with a southern parentage (think Victoria) are adapted to drier, mostly cooler and less humid summers.

March is often chosen as plants have time to get their roots down before cooler and probably drier months. It really does depend on the weather and with a forecast La Nina pattern, February could be okay. We all watch the weather; it’s possibly a national pastime. Next month mulch, mulch and more mulch!

Cane toads – love them or loathe them? by STEPHANIE HICKS

I

Does it matter? Cane toads are a threat to native wildlife and a significant cost to agriculture. Their poison is present not only in glands on the necks of toads, it is also present in their eggs and tadpoles. It is highly toxic to every potential native predator; in our waterways they crowd out native frogs and fish, and they have had a significant impact on our insect populations (for example, the enormously useful dung beetle!). The cost to agriculture can be enormous: what if you opened a bag of lettuce and found a cane toad leg in it! Of course this never happens – because our farmers spend a huge amount of effort and money to make sure it doesn’t happen. Cane toad war? The short answer is – at the moment – we don’t seem to be winning. There’s toad busting, but you have to be in the right frame of mind and it’s not for everyone! Plus – cane toads breed twice a year and the female can lay up to 30,000 eggs, twice a year. So getting rid of adult cane toads is an almost fruitless exercise, although there is anecdotal evidence that sustained effort in your own garden can make a difference to a local population. There are efforts to slow the spread of cane toads across the north of Australia by preventing access to water, which requires a concerted effort by everyone in their path, because even the smallest amount of water in a farm trough is enough.

In the Wild

Another project is “taste aversion” therapy. The path ahead of adult cane toads is salted with immature toads. The smaller toads have enough toxin to make predators sick but not kill them, so they learn to avoid the adults when they arrive. This method has had some success but not in all locations, and not with all predator species. What about tadpoles? Perhaps you have seen long strands of cane toad tadpole eggs or thousands of tadpoles in a pool, and thought – surely that’s the most efficient way to control them? It’s an excellent idea but the tadpoles are extremely agile, and there is a risk of scooping up other species and causing damage to the aquatic environment. Now science may have come up with an answer – not complete eradication, but hopefully enough to halt their spread, and to clean our waterways. Professor Rob Capon of the Institute of Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland and his Cane Toad Challenge team were asked to help. “The introduction of the cane toad was a biological experiment which failed spectacularly,” said Professor Capon. “We decided to take the challenge to the toad!” He already knew that toad tadpoles eat toad eggs, but the critical point is that they do so even in water with zero visibility. There is something in the eggs which attracts toad tadpoles and Professor Capon found that

If we slow down enough to take it all in, the land can shape us and open our minds and hearts to a wealth of possibilities for our lives and those we share our lives with. Rainfall finally returned in December after way too long a break and now the running creeks, lush foliage and rolling green hills should remind us of what a great place we call home. Our local scattered rainforest fragments contain spectacular biodiversity and these are just a tiny portion of Australia’s overall rainforest communities that, in spite of their fragmented and limited size (less than 0.5% of Australia’s land mass), are amongst the

Making cane toad traps

Toadpole trapping... Professor Capon presented a seminar to Barung Landcare members in 2017 in the early days of his research and in 2020 our members had a jolly time making tadpole traps using super high tech materials! Not all of us were successful at first, but there are a number of factors to take into account when setting the trap. Where to now? Cane Toad Challenge is a citizen science project with over 100 affiliate organisations, including locals such as Barung Landcare and the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee. Tadpole trapping is generally working well, with catches per trap ranging from hundreds up to 10,000 (the current record is approximately 40,000 in one trap!). Hopefully by using cane toad tadpoles’ own chemicals to lure them into traps, we can achieve a significant reduction in the number of tadpoles in our waterways. Even if we can’t eradicate cane toads completely, reducing the volume of tadpoles in our streams and rivers will be a great achievement. To know more, please go to imb.uq.edu.au/canetoadchallenge, or come in and talk to us at Barung Landcare, 26 Porters Lane, North Maleny. Phone: 5302 9900

Our Amazing Backyard

T

The next step was to extract this chemical (locals brought him thousands of dead adult cane toads!) and make a usable bait: it is now almost perfected and is being trialled as a natural chemical lure that tricks the tadpoles into swimming into a simple funnel trap in their thousands and even tens of thousands, but importantly, it does not attract anything else.

A captured cane toad

t’s hard to imagine anyone who loves them, but the more we study them, the more we learn about them. Just 100 toads were introduced in 1935 to eat a beetle that was causing devastating damage to sugarcane crops in North Queensland. Alas, they had no effect on the beetles but they loved Queensland and have grown to become a plague.

oldest and most biodiverse on the planet. So if you are lucky enough to have remnant rainforest in your “backyard”, enjoy and nurture this precious and rare forest jewel - either just for the sake of it or for the positive real estate values that the rainforest delivers you! Once upon a time, long, long ago (actually just over a decade or so) “scrub” degraded the value of your block, but these days what attracts people to the Range are the views and “owning” your own little patch of rainforest. This is a great turn of events as we now have some financial incentive for the potentially costly revegetation of the Blackall Range. Thankfully we also have lots of support for landholders from our local councils, which is money well spent, as we all benefit from the healthier landscape. Check out your local council website for landholder grant funding information.

If you don’t have any land to rerainforest yourself join in with one of the many local community-based restoration projects throughout the Range. Forest Heart ecoNursery has a great selection of rainforest plants from the smallest groundcovers, to shrubs, to the tallest trees that help you restore some of our amazing rainforest biodiversity. Sometimes it’s easy to forget with the apparent speed of our lives what an awesome place we live in and what an awesome community we are part of, plant more rainforest and make it even better!

Young writers and great coffee! The winner and two runners up of our HT Young Writer of the Year Award were all given the opportunity to join the Barista Training Course at Montville Coffee for the day, as one of the prizes, and two of the writers have now attended.

We had a wonderful morning with Angelique and Latisha,” shared Montville Coffee Marketing Assistant, Lauren Scaroni, “and look forward to having Gudrun complete the course in January. “Angelique and Latisha completed our personalised two-hour Barista Training with experienced trainer, Karen Barnett (pictured with Angelique McClymont and Latisha Brooker). “The course covered effective workplace hygiene practices and delved into the in-depth world of the coffee espresso coffee menu. “With focus, Angelique and Latisha worked through the elements for creating consistent, excellent espresso beverages and pouring textured milk for a variety of styles of coffee.” The course will be an excellent and practical foundation for entry into barista work in the hospitality industry, and the Hinterland Times greatly appreciates Montville Coffee donating this prize to our winner and runners up. “We absolutely love offering comprehensive short courses to youth entering the workforce and thoroughly enjoyed our time with Angelique and Latisha,” said Lauren.

HT Young Writer Award – Highly Commended As mentioned during our HT Young Writer of the Year Awards, we are also publishing the Highly Commended entries throughout the year when we have space. January’s entry is from Willow Antonacci.

23/07/20 Dear Diary, I’ve decided that being alone in quarantine is not necessarily a bad thing. You learn to find yourself, connect with yourself. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway. I am concerned about this whole Covid thing, but I’m not scared – okay, fine, maybe a little. But it is not the type of fear that stops me from moving and it’s not the same type of fear I have with snakes and spiders. It’s more because all the adults keep saying “if you’re careful, everything will be fine”. Usually they just say, “Everything will be fine” and you know that chances are they are most likely just saying that to make you feel better; but still you take comfort from that little thought of hope. Now though, they aren’t holding back much. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older and should be able to grasp this like an adult. I can’t believe now I have to face that too – growing up. It’s like when you’re sleeping and suddenly feel like you’re falling, so you jolt awake. Congratulations life – you have awoken me. I wish Life had a snooze button sometimes. It’s tough. There is so much I want to see, and do, and experience. But there are still so many things I’m not ready to let go of. I guess the world is growing up too. Right now, everyone is changing. There are so many movements to reform humanity. I hope it works out for the better. I also hope that no one gets left behind.

36 JANUARY 2021 HINTERLAND TIMES

I want us all to move and stand together. I think 2020 will be another important year in a history book. Isn’t that just crazy! Life just keeps going. The people on it come and go, but the world just keeps spinning, and the stars just keep shining. Sometimes I forget to just stop. Just to feel the earth beneath me. I am standing on the earth. I forget that when I reach out nothing else is there. If gravity weren’t a thing I’d just fall off and drift away. I am quite small in the scheme of things really. The universe is so strange. We were given a global pandemic, but it is making us appreciate things more. Being stuck inside makes you dream about the things you take for granted. Fresh air, the warm sunlight, the sound of the birds or even cars passing by. I also don’t think I have ever seen the whole world so happy to see each other. To treasure the moments we have to say hello or good morning to someone you walk past. To understand what it means to give and share. In a strange way, we are all united for once. In a strange way, we can understand and can hear each other. I hope we listen. All for now, -W P.S I still haven’t decided if the brain named itself. I guess I’ll keep thinking on it.

10 reasons to move to the Sunshine Coast

A quick dip in Kenilworth

All images - Victoria McGuin

1. A growing economy. The Sunshine Coast is shifting from a tourist attraction destination to an international destination, with one of the largest regional economies in Australia.

Cosy cafes in Nambour

2. It’s a great place for business. Maroochydore New Business district is directly connected to the world with a cable apparently faster than Sydney’s, designed to attract huge global companies. 3. The Sunshine Coast Airport is a big drawcard. Once Covid-19 is in our rearview mirror, locals will no longer having to drive to Brisbane to fly on to Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra, Cairns, Melbourne and Auckland. International flights are also on the horizon. 4. It’s a good investment. The Sunshine Coast is expected to see an average growth of 7% by June 2023, along with the average house price to reach $635,000, according to QBE Australian Housing Outlook 2019-2022. 5. The hinterland is incredible. With plenty of bush walks, nature trails, bike tracks, water holes and waterfalls, the mountains and slopes of the Sunshine Coat Hinterland have you spoilt for choice. Best of all, it’s FREE. 6. Food glorious food! The entire region is known for its quality produce, from pineapples and mushrooms, to grass-fed beef and superb cheeses. Markets pop up everywhere selling farmers’ produce, and there are heaps of excellent restaurants from Maleny to Noosa.

Surf's up at Maroochydore

7. Less pollution and crawling traffic. Yes, there are times of the day where you may get stuck in a jam for a while, but overall, driving is a pleasure and often a visual treat.

Sunset at Coolum

8. Beautiful beaches. Well, most people are aware of this by now, but in case you didn’t know, we have some stunning beaches that consistently hit the Top 10 or Top 20 Beaches in Australia list, and sometimes in the world! 9. Access to the city. Brisbane is in reach by car or train (or coach) within an hour or two, depending on your mode of transport. A faster, more frequent service from Nambour and Maroochydore will be even better, and many hope that this is a near-future plan. 10. The people. Overall, Sunny Coasters are a cheerful, friendly bunch, with a strong sense of community. They love their food, sport, bikes, ocean life, surfing, hiking and supporting local business. The creative scene is also continually expanding, and certain areas are becoming strong hubs for the Arts, such as Caloundra, Nambour, Maleny and Mooloolaba. So, when should we expect you? Q

Queensland is the number one destination for interstate migration, according to REIQ. Antonia Mercorella said the REIQ estimated interstate demand for property had increased by about 20% on this time last year, source ABC News. There is definitely an increasing urgency in the market at the moment. It is very much a seller’s market, with reduced numbers of properties coming onto the market. The shortage of properties on the market is also attributed to owners holding onto their properties longer than in previous years. Realestate.com.au has received three times the site visits compared to this time last year. Searches in the ‘buy’ section are up by 49% compared to this time last year. Last month realestate.com.au received 13 million enquiries. Enquiries to properties listed for sale is up by

128% compared to this time last year. Engagement with 3D tours have increased by 313% on this time last year. All of our new listings receive a complimentary 3D tour which can cost upwards of $750 per property. Digital inspection video views have increased by 60%. Now is the time to list and capitalise on the current market. We have been achieving outstanding results for our vendors - Call Susan or Dee today to see how we can help you.

Blackall Range Rental Crisis… Can You Help?!

W

ith an already tight rental market, with virtually no rental properties available across the Blackall Range, the shortage is getting worse by the day. With rental property owners either selling to make the most of a booming sales market or moving back into their own properties, the shortage of rental properties is becoming a very serious problem, particularly for low income earners who cannot afford to either buy or pay rapidly increasing rent. Blackall Range Real Estate in conjunction with organisations such as CHASM are doing what they can to help provide affordable housing for the less fortunate, but it is currently a losing battle and more needs to be done urgently. So, if you have any self-contained rentable space available and you would like to produce some supplementary income and, at the same time, provide a home for someone in need, please contact us on 5499 9966 to discuss your options.

38 JANUARY 2021 HINTERLAND TIMES

As one of the leading rental agencies in the area, Blackall Range Real Estate will ensure that any tenants put forward are fully background and reference checked before being submitted. We also ensure that your property is fully maintained by inspecting it every three months, as well as making sure that any rental payments are kept fully up to date. We can also help you with drawing up leases and ensuring that you are kept informed of any changes to legislation that might impact your rental property. As part of our contribution to helping relieve this growing rental crisis we are also offering substantial discounts on our property management fees. So, if you were ever thinking of renting out your property, now really is a great time to talk to us about how we can help you to, in turn, help others.

Each month we are saying thank you a business who has one of our stands outside their doors, or stocks our papers inside, so that we are able to bring the HT to even more readers across the hinterland. This month we are thanking locally-owned Brady’s Fruit (and Veg) Stall in Palmwoods, run by Colin and Sandra. Pictured is Brendan Pearce, one of the team who greet people with a smile and chat every day. In addition to fruit and veg, Brady’s sells local cheese, milk, butter and cream, herbs, eggs, bread, honey and fresh flowers. A perfect place to drive in, duck out and grab a few things, especially if you have small kids in the car as they are just a few feet away and easily visible while you shop! Brady’s is situated at 192 Woombye-Palmwoods Road, Palmwoods, open Monday – Saturday, 7am – 6pm. Phone: 54459260
