So what did 2020 teach you? ‘This too shall pass’ was in my head a lot. It reminded me not to give in to fear, to relish the good and appreciate the small and simple things in life, and to hang in there and learn any lessons during the not-so-good times.

I love how resilient we are. I’ve seen communities determined to keep connections going using different means, I’ve witnessed acts of kindness and support (food donations, helping neighbours, supporting local businesses) and in a strange way, I’ve felt the forced separation has made us realise how truly we need and care for each other.

Benefitting the community W

alking through the centre of Maleny with Rob Outridge, makes you feel like you are with a celebrity. Every few seconds someone says hello, or gives a cheery wave, or has a quick comment to share.

Rob and Samantha Outridge have been at the helm of the Maleny IGA since 1995, and proudly believe ‘our buck stops here’ – with money staying in the community, many suppliers being from the community, and consistently giving back to the community.

The Maleny IGA top five beneficiary clubs and amounts raised since March 2006; Sippy Creek Animal Refuge (SCAR)

- $132,600

Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital

- $98,765

Maleny IGA Community Needs fund - $98,290

Rob firmly believes this has allowed their business to add value to the community. “We recently gave life-saving equipment to Maleny Hospital, we’ve filled the fire brigade trucks with fuel during the bushfires, we paid for extensions to the local kindy, helped the River School Year 6 go to Canberra, helped fund the local school chaplain, sent pallets of pet food to Sippy Creek Animal Refuge – the list goes on.”

Rob believes the success is down to Maleny and the surrounding area being so community minded. At the end of November, the Maleny IGA relaunched the CBC over a week-long promotion. “We had employees with laptops helping people sign up in the store, and community groups were participating outside to help drum up awareness.” If you missed it, just pop into the store and grab a form to fill in. “It’s easy,” explains Rob, “Just make sure you quote your CBC number each time you shop, so your chosen club gets the points.” With Christmas around the corner, this is a great time to shop local, earn points and really make a positive difference – it’s a win for everyone.

nid Joyce Pearce was born at ‘Sunny Brae’ private hospital, Eumundi, the sixth child in a family of nine. They were a pioneering farming family and as Enid jovially explains, her mother’s maiden name was Pickering and “four Pearces married four Pickerings, so that saved us hundreds of relations!” As a child growing up in the Depression, the highlight of Enid’s year was a trip to Gympie to do the Christmas shopping and to receive a treat from a spring-activated mechanical donkey. The journey was made in a buggy pulled by two draught horses.

“We used to get up before daylight and milk and get on the road for Gympie. It was a heavenly day! I remember Cullinane’s had a big old donkey, and dad would give them some money and he’d kick you a present. You stood behind him. We thought that was marvellous.”

and all those all over ...” The task was overwhelming, but ingenuity kicked in.

But it was Alf who turned up at the Kenilworth dances and won her over with his dancing abilities. As it turns out, his brother couldn’t dance.

“I just bought some wire netting, netted the whole place in, and got 40 of those end-of-year laying chooks and they scratched around the roots of everything, and I was just able to grub them out.”

The couple married in 1938 and their first child, Ray, was born in 1939. Another 10 children followed and though two (Ray and Ivan) have passed away, their families and six other children still live in the Sunshine Coast region. When WWII broke out, Alf joined up and was serving as an army cook on the Kokoda Trail. “Alf was in that first push over the Owen Stanleys, and he got this rash all over him, spent a lot of time in hospital.” After the war, Alf, still suffering badly from dermatitis, returned to his old job at Tesch’s Sawmill and it was up to Enid to start a farm from scratch, an arduous task for anyone let alone a woman with four little children and another soon on the way. “The kids and I started the farm up to pay for his ointments because the Army didn’t pay for anything in those days.”

With a lot of help from her sons, the block was prepared and the house was successfully delivered. That was about 40 years ago, and Enid still lives there today.

You looked out for your older sister who had polio. Hundreds of locals have enjoyed your beautiful sponge cakes. And you’ve survived 100 years on this discombobulated planet. Each deserves an accolade! Wishing you every happiness on your 100th birthday. A Note from Enid’s Family

Those chooks played another important role though – providing eggs for the magnificent sponge cakes that Enid is renowned for. At Maleny Show time, Enid would churn out five a day for the workers, the cakes all as light as a feather and filled with beautiful mock cream.

The old house had been blown down in a cyclone, but as luck would have it, Enid was able to acquire a ‘relocatable’ house for $2,000, but there was a catch – she needed to prepare the block.

Nambour roads paved with volunteer gold How to choose the right sheets Australia’s finest range of certified organic cotton and wool textile products since 2004

Chef Troy with his dedicated kitchen volunteers Kim, Janelle, Karen and Chris

The Cambridge Dictionary says the word ‘volunteer’ is a noun for, “a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it.”

It really comes down to how it feels against the skin. It is a common misconception that the higher the thread count the better the sheet. Thread counts are no indication of the quality of the sheet; they are purely a numerical measurement of the threads inserted into a 10 cm² of fabric. It all comes down to the quality of the cotton you start with. In terms of what creates the difference in feel between certain styles of sheets is essentially the raw cotton and the method of weaving used. SIMPLE LUXURY for example are the softest cotton we make, they are done in a sateen weave, the sheets end up feeling very soft against the skin and drapes over the body while you sleep. Our HOTEL RANGE is a crisper and smoother feel, crafted with a more even weave of cotton in percale. Then we have the MAGNIFICENT RANGE which is aptly named. This is one of our best sellers, being a thicker, heavier cotton feel with a sateen weave adding a plushness to it. It’s the perfect sheet for those who love pure luxury.

olunteers are the people signing your important documents at the courthouse as a Justice of the Peace, the parents putting in long hours in tiny, hot kitchens at school tuck shops; the unsung heroes answering the call for volunteer firefighters keeping their community safe, and working in op-shops which deliver much needed funds for charities.

by REBECCA MUGRIDGE

Heart-driven volunteer, Val Smith, has been helping with breakfast and coffees for fifteen years at the Shak, a non-judgemental place anyone can visit for something to eat or drink in the morning. Val believes it might be something simple, but it can lift someone’s whole day. “I’m a long-term volunteer here. I think community conscious people get involved … they want to serve,” she said. Another essential area for volunteers is community-based kids sports (so important for children’s health), like Little Athletics, which grew from 1500 competing athletes during its first year in Queensland in 1975 to now over 70,000 a year Australia wide.

Nambour Little Athletics (LA) Centre Manager Lindsie Eastman said it just would not work without volunteers. She herself started as a volunteer because she did LA as a child and found it was a great way to spend her childhood. “I am still friends with people that I did Little Athletics with, even as an adult. It is a community. But we cannot do what we do without parents turning up every Saturday and volunteering and getting involved. They [the kids] also love seeing their parents helping and contributing.” LA Secretary and mum of two, Tamara Sanders, is also a huge fan. “I started volunteering when taking my son Riley to play. My first two seasons I helped on the sideline and now I have committed to a slightly bigger role. I love the aspect that you can be there and help and watch your child at the same time,” she said.

Little Athletics, Secretary Tamara Sanders (left) and Centre Manager Lindsie Eastman (right)

Secretary Philip Worthy is proud to be a part of Meals on Wheels 

Chopping away at a mountain of onions is LA volunteer, Lindy Baptist, who added that it is just as great socially for adults as it is for the children, “I have made some good friends through Little Athletics.” One of the greatest volunteer-reliant organisations with a strong tie to the area must be Meals on Wheels (MOW); a name most people are familiar with. MOW began after World War II in the UK by the Women’s Volunteer Service for Civil Defence and was launched in Australia in the late 1950s. The Nambour branch commenced in 1971, with a committee formed by local churches. They delivered their very first batch of 21 meals on October 4, 1971, out of the Church of England Hall. The MOW popularity and need grew and now they have over 10,000 volunteers in Queensland alone. Shak volunteer Val Smith 

Nambour MOW is a simple brick building with stacks of eskies outside, ready-to-go. A delivery vehicle awaits, and delicious cooking smells are drifting past in tantalising tendrils from a shiny stainless-steel, immaculately kept kitchen.

If you are looking for that special something extra in your life, volunteering might be it. As the meals on wheels handbook says: The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention Oscar Wilde.

Chef Troy places catering-sized trays of parmesan-encrusted paprika chicken on his bench and a captivated team of volunteers listens to his every direction. He is one of a few employees, an important part in the mechanism. Troy has a warm confidence, multi-tasks with practised ease, and his smile shows his pride in his volunteer team and the meals, soon to be delivered by more volunteers to hundreds of recipients. Secretary, Philip Worthy, is passionate about the organisation and how they help people. “The motto is ‘more than just a meal,’ he said, explaining that MOW is also sometimes the only human contact some people might have in a given day or week so it can benefit people living alone in a variety of ways from a welfare check to the socialness of a smiling visitor bearing some soul-nourishing food. “It does give peace of mind [for relatives], they know someone is visiting their family member each day and it’s a little check-up. If they are due to get a meal that day and the delivery arrives and they are not home or not answering the door the driver immediately rings us and we try to track that person down and reach their emergency contacts,” he said.

Nambour Meals on Wheels are currently looking for volunteers 07 5441 3543 nambourmow1@bigpond.com 21A Price Street, NAMBOUR And you can also check the Volunteering Sunshine Coast website to see what other organisations need help near you.volunteeringsunshinecoast.org.au

Philip is quick to point out that MOW is for a ide range of people, not just the very elderly or doctor referred. It has become popular with older people living on their own who do not want to cook a big meal for one person, it is utilised by NDIS, Home Care Package providers, groups and individuals. He said people can also self-refer themselves, refer a neighbour or a loved one. “Really the criteria is, ‘whether their life will be improved by getting a meal,’ that is what we work on.” Lindy Baptist loves being a volunteer at Nambour Little Athletics

a special-interest group. From quilting and textile arts to glass and ceramics, there is something for the curious soul in all of us to explore.

“Clay work was something I always wanted to do, but I had children and a job so it wasn’t until later in my life that I took up pottery. I started with a six-week wheel throwing course and I haven’t looked back. I caught the bug,” she laughs. “I am still doing some workshops now and then but am mainly selftaught.

For Mieke, it is always clay that calls her back. Even after a hiatus to learn new skills in glass and enamel. “The MACG was instrumental in supporting my early efforts. There was always someone to help me or to bounce ideas off. The pottery group has a great workshop in the MACG building with wheels and kilns and everything else a potter might need,” Mieke explains.

“There are over 14 different groups under the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group (MACG) umbrella,” she explains. Every type of material or medium an artist might like to work in is catered for with

people. I am given a coffee, and flowers from one of the lady’s gardens, as well as a seat in the meeting. The group meets either on Thursday mornings each week or during an evening session that was recently initiated due to Covid-19 and restrictions on numbers. Members can also source clay and glazes through the group and there are regular glazing and firing days, so that work is always being progressed. “I joined the group in 1998 and have learned so much. We are a great group, very friendly and welcoming,” Mieke says proudly. Mieke has exhibited her work on the Sunshine Coast and has received recognition for her unique and multi-faceted pieces. She works in sculpture and wheel throwing and loves the way clay can be made into anything the imagination can draw forth.

Raku Sheep by June Godkin

“I do make functional pieces, but I often can only do so many of the same thing. I usually find a set of coffee mugs that turn out all different from each other, but that is part of the charm. “It is the unpredictability of how a piece will turn out that keeps me curious. It is also one of the main charms of the Raku style of work I produce,” muses Mieke. “Raku is a traditional, ancient Japanese style of work,” Mieke explains. “Then there is horsehair and feather raku where the piece is burnished with no glaze applied to the surface of the pot, but horsehair and feathers draped over in a decorative manner and where the carbon burns into the clay leaving behind an intricate pattern.

While Mieke calls herself a hobbyist, it is clear her love for the medium of clay and her dedication to learning and experimenting have made her a talented potter, who now gives back to the MACG in terms of time and expertise. The MACG has a shop in Maleny next to the Maleny Lane precinct where members are welcome to sell their products all year round. Members staff the store on a rostered basis. Anyone interested in pottery or any other art or craft group is welcome to visit the MACG website or contact the secretary via email: malenyartsandcraftsgroup@gmail.com

“I use a wheel and I hand-build my pieces. I often finish wheel-thrown pieces with hand-built elements. I’m always experimenting with different glazes and firing techniques. It is always something new each time, it’s exciting to open the kiln and see what happened,” she explains enthusiastically. Mieke has advanced enough that she now runs workshops in Raku and often mentors others. A recent Raku workshop produced beautiful pieces that mixed traditional glazing techniques and traditional burnishing. Some of Mieke’s work is currently on display in the Ben Messina Gallery as well as the MACG shop. She also regularly has a stall at the Maleny Handmade Markets. “I have exhibited at several exhibitions and ceramic competitions in recent years.” Mieke modestly admits to winning prizes for her work, but although proud of her achievements, she is more interested in the new work she is producing and the progression of her experiments in combining clay work with the enamel and glass-work skills.

“I was the baby of the family, youngest of four, born in Darlington, County Durham in the 1940s. Dad was an accountant and Mum a homemaker. She had left school at 14 and wanted a better education for her children, so she sent all four kids to elocution classes. I was four or five when I began those lessons. “Our elocution teacher entered my brother Roger and I in lots of festivals, like eisteddfods, all over England. Our presentations were mainly in the poetry and Shakespearian categories. My mother made the costumes, and we won lots of prizes.” Patricia attended high school until the age of 16 and “It was at St Martin’s Theatre in South Yarra. “While managing the shop, I tested the market with my craftwork—making doll’s dresses and dressing teddy bears. When I sold the shop, I continued with my craft,” said Trish attributing her needlework skills to mother, Marjorie Grant, who also became well known in the Maleny scene after she moved up the hill. The two could be seen every Friday night socialising at the Upfront Club.

who became an Australian actress whose career spanned over 50 years. “I also had a couple of bit parts on television,” said Trish, admitting she was consumed with acting but being newlywed and the strain of rehearsals and shows between Melbourne and Sydney caused her to forgo her career in theatre. She started working as a secretary in the advertising industry in Melbourne.

Thirty years in Maleny has seen this quietly spoken gentlewoman with a flair for fashion and fun embed herself in the town. Trish concludes: “I have ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and live in a wonderful community. I cherish my family and friends every day. That is what’s important.”

Trish had the first of her three children at age 29. The family, desiring a country lifestyle, moved to central Victoria. Trish and her then husband Richard (Dick) Barnes bought the Swiss Mountain Hotel, near Daylesford.

Trish unfolded a page from The Herald, dated December 1966. She read out the heading On a Whim and a Flair—plus a mother and a brain and recalls: “I was a 25-year-old speech and drama teacher when Mum and I opened a clothing store in Melbourne. Here are some clothes we designed and made,” she said pointing to newspaper photographs. The Bower Bird sold in 2004, leaving Trish free to concentrate on her craftwork, which includes mixed media collage and folk art. She created the stall ‘Raggety Posh’ at Maleny Sunday Market where she still trades.

was a good place for craft, and we loved the weather. In 1989, we bought a block of land on Mountain View Road and built the Maleny Pottery and Gallery. When we sold, it became The Celtic Tearooms. “We couldn’t make a living out of making pots so a couple of years later, we opened a shop in town selling pottery and craft supplies. The shop was next to the Maple Street Co-op. They eventually knocked the wall between the two down to make the co-op bigger. “Then I moved across the road and shared a space with artist Gary Myers. There were two shops with an opening in between. My store was The Bower Bird gift shop.” In the mid-’90s, as her business gained momentum, Trish sought a lease and moved into a bigger space (now Maleny Additions).

“Maleny Market, I love it! It’s a community and the marketeers feel like family. I sell my dressed teddy bears sourced mainly from op shops. I wash them and make their dresses out of recycled antique laces and old doilies. And I make the little girl’s dresses from recycled and vintage fabric like antique tablecloths. Part of the joy of it all is the collecting… like little vintage brooches for the teddy bears.” I asked Trish, “What’s next?” She does not speak of retirement, but of her bucket list. She speaks of exploring new ideas for her creative pursuits and travel. “I usually go to England every two years but that’s not possible at this time, however, local holidays are still on the agenda. A friend and I travelled to the Whitsundays this year, and I snorkelled for the first time. I’m not good in the water so it took a bit of courage, but I did it and it was wonderful!”

MUCH ADO ABOUT EASEMENTS An easement is the right to use another person’s land for a stated purpose. It can involve a general or specific portion of the property. An example of where an easement can benefit a property is where John owns a tract of land that borders the a national park which is a popular area for bushwalking and fishing. Mary lives next door to John , but her land does not adjoin the national park. To avoid trespassing, she must access the national park by walking or driving to a public entry point. Instead, John grants Mary an easement allowing present and future owners of Mary’s property to cross John’s land to access the national park. How does an easement effect the person who grants it? The landowner who grants an easement usually cannot build structures within an easement area or use fencing that would hinder access. Other activities might also be prohibited. It is therefore important that before you a purchase property you know where all easements are located and what restrictions are associated with them. Easements can affect property values – consider these examples: • Several easements on one lot of land might seriously limit the choice of building sites. • High tension power lines running through an easement near an otherwise great building site can be unsightly. Resale values may be affected since many people feel that living too close to ADVERTISING BOOKING FORM power lines is a health risk. SU NN Y C OAS T T IMES

Mystery on Main Allie Knowles from Mystery on Main in Montville

By VICTORIA MCGUIN

A

t the entrance to Montville (from Maleny), you will find an enchanting showroom, called Mystery on Main. Step inside and meet Allie Knowles, who runs this space with joy and enthusiasm for all who are part of it. Mystery on Main is an eclectic mix of artworks, clothing, music, pottery and much, much more – all made by Sunshine Coast (and occasionally Brisbane-based) artists. Allie shows me round, and I see bespoke resin jewellery, glasswork, natural beauty and baby products, handmade pots and bowls, ‘Burnt Paper’ art, hand-painted guitars, Indigenous artworks, ‘conceptual narrative’ photography, bamboo clothes… the list goes on. “I take anyone creative in,” laughs Allie. “I love them. I mean, I obviously like their work, but I just want to support as many people as I can. I’ve always loved art.” The artists in the Mystery stable hail from Eumundi, Yandina, Nambour, Montville, Kilcoy, Maleny, Kondalilla and across the Range. “Most come through word-ofmouth,” explains Allie, “and quite a few through family connections, some I find on Facebook.” Alli grew up in Buderim and went to Maroochydore High School, so she spent much of her childhood at the beach. “I’ve always loved the hinterland though,” Allie admits. “When my husband Tom and I lived in Coolum, we found a property on the Obi Obi Creek and fell in love. We moved as soon as possible.

The couple have been running Mystery on main since April 2020, and Tom built much of the unique cabinetry and shelving inside. “No tree was harmed during the making of this shop though!” smiles Allie. (Tom is also a musician who used to run the Mountain Sessions ‘No Cigar’ gigs in Mapleton.) Prior to opening the shop Allie was kept busy on their property, “I was regenerating areas, planting hundreds of trees and keeping a garden on a large scale, and visiting my five grandchildren.” I ask Allie what she loves about her business? “I love the people, but I love the pets they come with! The large Bull Mastiff from Eumundi who lay across my front door so no-one could get past. The lady on a ‘paint and sip’ tour, who wants to come back and sit on my deck, glimpse the ocean and I will bring her a glass of wine for free.” Allie says the Montville community has been very supportive of her shop, buying gifts and seeing what’s new, and the artisans are her friends. “It’s become a joke with them that I move my stock every day. I like to promote and display to the best of my ability, so I rarely sit down!” Allie is enjoying her new role, “I’m proud of all the artisans I work with, and I enjoy talking to customers and meeting wonderful people who are supporting small businesses.”

“It’s full of wildlife, the running creek, the bush and trees, the quiet, and the winter in the Obi Valley.”

Mystery on Main Art Gallery is at 200 Main Street, Montville. Open Thursday to Monday 10am – 4pm.

Wild weather? Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan, is warning Queenslanders to be ready for the severe weather season.“With La Nina conditions active for the 2020/21 severe weather season,Queensland could face heavier than usual rainfall.” Get ready for the summer season: have an emergency and evacuation plan; pack your emergency kit, and make sure you’re covered – check your insurance! It only takes about 10 minutes to prepare your household emergency plan on the Get Ready Queensland Website: getready.qld.gov.au. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner, Greg Leach, said QFES was prepared for a busy severe weather season. Mr Leach said it was important residents took steps now to protect themselves and their loved ones. “Removing debris from around the home, cleaning gutters and downpipes, trimming overhead branches and securing loose items in the yard can make a big difference when wild weather hits,” he said. “While our highly-trained personnel are ready to help when called upon, everyone needs to do their bit this storm and cyclone season to reduce the impact of severe weather.”

TIPS FOR THE

Holiday Season Many of us will be very happy to see 2020 come to a close, in what has been a year of many firsts, some really bad events and some positives. We hope you have faired ok during this time and are looking forward to a restful holiday time, whether it be at home or, it’s probably safe to assume, somewhere in this lucky nation. If you are heading off here are some reminders to ensure your home is as you left it: • Cancel all milk and papers deliveries. Have your mail held or redirected until you get back. • Have a friend pick up junk mail and arrange for the wheelie bins in and out. • Arrange to have the lawns mown and plants watered. • Have sensor lights on timers. • Install security cameras. • Turn down the telephone so it can’t be heard from outside. • Inform the local police and give them your contact details while away.

• Have window locks installed and place We’d of prefer it not to track. say ‘Many thanks, Hayley lengths dowel in the

please • Don’t leave any spare keys outside the home as often intruders find and use Instead could have(especially our details: these to enter thewe home if you leave them under the pot at the back door-burglars would never think to look there!!).

Another tip is to check your insurance policy. A client brought to our attention recently that some home insurance policies now have a clause that if your property is unattended for a period of time, you may not be covered. We extend our best wishes to all for a safe and happy festive season and a less stressful 2021.

Art Markets Y andina’s historic CBD is set to come alive with Friday December 11 designated as the district’s initial night trading event. One of the attractions will be a Night Art Market conducted by Yandina Art and Framing.

Alice Graham, managing partner and art director of the business, explains, “Many of the local traders have contended with the disruption from Covid-19 by offering new and exciting events and services to their loyal customers, as well as visitors from further afield. “In our case, we started a Saturday Art Market showcasing the talent of some of our very talented local artists. We also included an art class that attracted wide acclaim. Building on that success, we will have a list of who’s who from the local art scene.

As well as providing specialised framing services, the business now boasts a vibrant gallery and is moving into the sale of art supplies including oils, inks, brushes and canvasses. “The Night Art Market is really an extension of our services to enable artists to display their work and meet the public”, Alice added. CRAIG MADDEN  Craig Madden is a singer, string plucker and writer who has more than 20 years experience touring and local gigging on the East Coast of Australia. From solo shows to larger stage band gigs, Craig has traversed a large part of the Australian musical landscape. His career as a young blues guitarist began on the Sunshine Coast, and now he returns with a voice and lyrics ringing with truth, soul and experience, whilst his pumping rhythmic guitar style growls underneath, at times melodic and sweet, at others blue and intense. See Craig at Finbars, Maleny, December 19 at 6.30pm, contact: 5494 3146.

AUSTRALIAN ROCK Time to rock it up with the Powderfinger and Australian Crawl tribute show at the Beerwah Hotel on December 20 from 3pm. As one of Australia’s most beloved rock bands of the ’90s and ’00s, Powderfinger became one of this country’s most iconic musical groups. Their 22-year career spawned seven albums, a handful of EPs and live records, and countless singles, such as the massive My Happiness. Aussie Crawl were one of the iconic Aussie bands of the ‘80s, with hits like Reckless (don’t be so…), Beautiful People, The Boys Light Up and Downhearted. If you feel like stepping back in time and hearing their music played live, then this tribute at Beerwah is the place to be.

f there’s anywhere you are guaranteed a great meal, it’s the Palmwoods or Beerwah Hotels. We at the HT hear consistently good reports from people who have been to both! Valuable hubs for the community, with the addition of live music and tribute nights, sports bar, plus a very useful courtesy bus home - you can’t really go wrong. Palmwoods Hotel, with its spacious main eating area, framed by comfy rattan lounge chairs and low tables, is always buzzing with life. Kids come in and dash off to the entertainment area, while the adults sit and talk, and often the younger generations are perched around the high tables on the start of their night out. It’s basically full of family and friends, which makes for a great atmosphere. So, what’s on the menu? Along with classic starters such as soup of the day and bruschetta, you’ll see Oysters Kilpatrick, Sri Lankan Prawn Curry, Stuffed Mushrooms, and Chicken Bao, to name a few. Main courses include char-grilled steaks (using locally-sourced meats), pizza, seafood, pork belly, pies and, of course the classic, Chicken Parmigiana! Vegetarians are catered for with fajitas, salads, Sweet Potato and Quinoa Fritters, and Mediterranean Eggplant. And with a kids menu for under 12s and plenty of tempting desserts, you’re spoilt for choice. Palmwoods Hotel even has four menus: the lunch menu; main menu; afternoon dining menu, and sports bar menu. Plus, weekly specials to tempt you away for your usual food comfort zone. Bookings are essential for dining in the bistro, so call 5445 9003, or visit palmwoodshotel.com.au for more details and the online menu. Beerwah Hotel has a comfortable bistro and beer garden to sit back and relax in, plus the usual sports bar, where you can enjoy a counter meal and cheer your team on. The meals here are fresh, seasonal and bursting with locally sourced produce, just like at Palmwoods. The main menu offers similar fare, with a few variations, and there is also a kids area conveniently located next to the beer garden. To book a table, call 5494 055. See you there! ounded in 2016, Brouhaha Brewery in Maleny has been steadily sharing the art of independent brewing, and the distinctive flavours of craft beer, to locals and visitors alike. The brewery’s strong focus is on choosing local produce first, for both its beer and delicious lunch menu. “The hinterland is a rich produce hub,” said Toby Stodart, marketing and events manager of Brouhaha, “and we prioritise producers, farms and businesses that are within a 20km radius of our Maleny Brewery, like Maleny Wagyu, The Falls Farm and Mountain Top Mushrooms, just to name a few. Sustainability is important to the business; the discarded grain that comes from the brewing process goes back to feed Maleny’s wagyu cows which, in turn, get bought back by Brouhaha brewery for use in their restaurant. “We are proud to welcome Belvedere Farm as our most recent addition to our list of local producers,” shared Toby.

The December Brouhaha menu has plenty of mouthwatering choices

A little bit Bohemian, a little bit Vintage, classic & contemporary, all rolled into one

“Phil can’t wait to create some dishes using our beer into the cooking to help showcase the pork,” smiled Toby. “He already has some dishes in his sights with the Raspberry Saison and Hinterland Pale Ale playing the role as key ingredients.” The new Brouhaha Brewery menu is set to launch the first weekend in December, and will feature Belvedere Pork as a daily special until sold out. “We’re so proud to work with Brouhaha,” said Brydie, “They’re not just the producers of our favourite beer and our Friday afternoon hangout, but a place with similar values to us, feeding locals and visitors amazing regional food in our rural community.” Brouhaha Brewery: 6/39 Coral Street, Maleny / Phone: 07 5435 2018 / brouhahabrewery.com.au

“Nick and Brydie Holliday at Belvedere Farm will be supplying us seasonally with a heritage breed, Wessex Saddleback pork.” The farm spreads over 20 acres of Jinibara land at Cedarton, just outside Maleny, “We will be receiving the whole animal and will be using our nose-to-tail and farm-to-food cooking philosophy to showcase the hard work and love that Nick and Brydie put in to create such amazing pasture-raised animals.” Nick is the Vice-President of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance, an organisation dedicated to helping small-scale producers and their eaters access good, local, ethical food. Brydie explained a little more about the farm, “We practice agroecology - the concept of applying ecological, social principles to the production of food. “As a delicious by-product, we produce pastured eggs, pastured heritage-breed pork, grass-fed and finished beef and the occasional crop of garlic or sweet corn.” “Our methods aim to mimic ecosystem processes - the animals do the work, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they’re in the right place at the right time. MARKET GUIDE

We love our hinterland markets. Some are gearing up for Christmas, and a few (such as Mapleton and Crystal Waters) are winding down ready for a fresh start in 2021. Here are three of our favourites. Pick a pressie in Nambour

Wend on over to Witta

The Nambour Village Square Market is a charming spark of life and local shopping, one of many across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

This year the Witta Market falls only six days before Christmas, on Saturday December 19, 7am – 12pm at the Old Witta School.

With laughter and conversation ringing in the air, bursts of colour, fresh food and herbs; artistic endeavour has appeared again to entice locals to explore their town.

Breakfast on the new deck

This is a great opportunity to get your hands on outstanding flavours this festive season. At the market you will find many of the traditional essentials like meats, seafood, vegetables, and sweet treats, so every Christmas meal can have something unique, delicious, and local!

Yes, it’s a blissful place to sit and enjoy pancakes and a pot of tea before you start Christmas shopping at the Montville Growers’ and Makers’ Market.

Witta Market is a pickup point for local and pasture raised Christmas hams from Forage Farms, as well as sustainably caught seafood from Soulfish Seafoods.

Catch those cool sea breezes and stunning views while enjoying breakfast on the new deck on the Eastern side of the Montville Hall at their December 12 Christmas Market. This season’s pancake special: Seared Nectarines.

Shopping at a farmer’s market, where you can speak directly with the sellers, is a fantastic way to support your local community. The wonderful artists and creatives who attend the Witta Market offer a range of works and one-off pieces that are as unique and special as the person you are gifting them too.

Image: Warren Lynam

Check out Deez Creations. She has a beautiful range of handmade birthday and Christmas cards to suit everyone’s tastes. Tara has some great dresses at great prices, and if you’re lucky, you might see Nien serving her lovely Vietnamese food. Come and see the range of beautiful pieces Christine has from Unique Upcycled Furniture, such as chopping boards, cheese knives and chopsticks. Grab some 100% organic Australian magnesium oil to soothe away your aches and pains, so you can enjoy Christmas. Choose a handmade leather belt made by John Rigney. Enjoy the wafting aroma of Annette’s incense, or take a look at Alan’s fishing gear. Every week is different, but every week there will be treasures to be found, Thursdays from 8am till 2pm in the Nambour CBD.

Neil and Terry will strum their steel strings while you do your weekly shop for fruit and veggies, organic breads, honey and more. (Picture is November’s musician, Elye J Music.) Local artisans bring their uniquely crafted local wares, such as Emma’s elegant wooden spoons, Claire’s exquisitely crafted silver jewellery, Liz’s chicken wire chooks, to name a few. In the ‘Young Entrepreneurs Corner’, Ella sells her wax sculpted candles, from her own bees; her cute little felted baby native animals and Oliver’s Christmas wreaths made from (the dreaded) glycine vine. (Ella and Oliver pictured.)

The Christmas Witta Market is set to be larger than usual, with a number of extra stalls attending for the festive season! They wish you all a very safe and merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you at the last Witta Market for the year! Stall holder enquiries to: wittamarket@gmail.com

Every Christmas the Montville Village Association donates a percentage of money raised from the pancake breakfast to a worthy charity or cause. This year they will be donating 10% of breakfast profits to CHASM (fb: @ chasmhousing) a local organisation that advocates for affordable housing solutions in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, an issue of pressing relevance both locally and Australia wide. Come along and support local producers and celebrate community, from 7.30am – midday, the second Saturday of the month.

H OLI DAY I D E A S December is not only Christmas, but also six weeks of no school! Many of us find that we need ideas and inspiration during this time, so here are a few suggestions if you’re end-of-year exhausted and can’t think any more! All about aviation

Waterfalls and walks

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Queensland Air Museum (QAM) is run entirely by volunteers, driven by the passion that is encompassed in the vision statement of “Preserving Australia’s Aviation Heritage”.

Make your way to beautiful Kondalilla Falls, where you can swim in the waterhole and meander the leafy, winding, walking tracks.

The Discovery Centre at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve hosts multi-sensory, interactive educational displays plus spectacular views of the heritage-listed Glass House Mountains from the on-site cafe, and the elevated viewing platform and boardwalk.

Over 94 historically significant aircraft have been sourced, restored, rebuilt, maintained and displayed to the public by QAM volunteers for almost 45 years. The museum is open every day from 10am – 4pm except for Christmas. The QAM offers complimentary historic tours to visitors every Monday and Wednesday or by booking to groups of 12 or more. You have a chance to learn about aviation history from someone who has helped create it! Coffee, cold drinks and ice-creams also for sale, plus a shop with aviation models and souvenirs. Visitors are welcome to self-cater. QAM can also be booked for after-hours events. See the website qam.com.au for details. Open December 12, 2020 to January 31, 2021, 10am - 4pm, the Queensland Air Museum is based at 7 Pathfinder Drive, Caloundra.

The walk down to the falls is a little steep but considered ‘family friendly’, with some rock stairs (about 150) and a maintained path. There are stunning views of the rainforest valley from the natural rock pools at the top.

The outside recreation area features gas BBQs to cook your lunch, plenty of space to kick a ball, and also a playground for the kids.

The entire trail is well defined and maintained by National Parks. From the bottom of the picnic area just beyond the car park, join the figure-ofeight trail, which includes the popular Picnic Creek Circuit (1.3km) and shared with the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk (58km).

The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has an abundance of wildlife, birds galore and some easy walking trails that allow you to enjoy the surrounding 55 hectares of National Estate listed subtropical rainforest.

There are picnic facilities, BBQ and toilets at the start of the walk, but none down at the falls. No dogs allowed. Kondalilla Falls is located at the end of Kondalilla Falls road, Flaxton. You can find more great hinterland walks and waterfalls on: visitsunshinecoast. com; just type in ‘hinterland walks’ or ‘hinterland hikes’.

Top tip – you’ll see and hear more on the walk if you’re quiet and watchful. Breathe in that fresh rainforest air and feel rejuvenated by nature. Open seven days, 9.30am – 3.30pm, closed Christmas Day, located at 165 Mountain View Road, Maleny. Website: mary-cairncross.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au

Loads of Lego! Have you heard of The Brick Zone? This fantastic spot (free entry or donation) is a fun place for kids to learn and play in a safe environment.

On your bike Ewan Maddock Dam is an enjoyable cycle ride through a scenic landscape, for all the family. The multi-use trail (called the Main Track) goes from Maddock Park on the northern side of the lake to Gympie Street North, near Landsborough. Plenty to take in along the lake’s edge, waterlilies, aqua plants, the Glass House Mountains in the distance, plus eucalypts, palms, paperbarks and more in the wetlands. The birdlife is plentiful, with whip birds, parrots, kingfishers, pukekos and even pelicans just some of those making themselves known. When you finish, follow the road into Landsborough and have lunch (or breakfast) in one of the welcoming eateries - Family Tree Café at 1 Maleny Street is our favourite, before you head back again! How to find it: Heading south on the M1, at the Caloundra,turn-off, take Steve Irwin Way south. After 3 km turn right into the Mooloolah Connection Road. Follow this road approx 1.5 km till you get to an SEQ Water sign for Ewan Maddock Dam Maddock Park. Turn left and drive down until you reach the car park. If heading north on Steve Irwin Way, Mooloolah Connection Road is approximately 6km past Landsborough on your left. Another great option is the Bracalba Shared Trail in the Glass House Mountains Conservation Park, west of Wamuran. And if you fancy a gentle beach cycle followed by a swim, check out Bulcock Beach to Kings Beach, a 1.6km section of the Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway, then hop in the ocean at Kings Beach, or use the tidal Beachfront Saltwater Pool and let the kids splash around in the nearby fountains.

The Brick Zone is a Lego display and building workshop space in Maleny, run by a Lego crazy family consisting of two adults and two kids, who love sharing their Lego passion with the world! The Brick Zone offers STEM workshops for ages 7-14 utilising Lego WeDo 2.0, and a Lego Robotics product for younger geniuses, as well as the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics system to build and program advanced robotics with gyro, ultrasonic, touch, and colour sensors. They also hold regular Family Fun Days where everyone of all ages can come and view this extensive Lego collection display and build from their imagination, taking home their special creations. (Take-home Lego paid for by weight at cost-effective prices.) The property is set on 2.5 acres of landscaped grounds, so the kids can also run around or kick a ball if they get Lego fatigue! For more information and appointments, visit: thebrickzone.com.au or call 0413 150 003.

A few more... Don’t forget, there are often things to do and books to borrow at the local libraries (Covid-allowing). Visit: library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, for updates throughout the holidays. Others places to visit on our doorstep include: Bellingham Maze (plus mini-golf ) off Tanawha Tourist Drive; The Ginger Factory in Yandina; The Big Pineapple in Woombye with the Tree Top Challenge; Maroochy Botanic Gardens in Tanawha; Australia Zoo in Beerwah; Aussie World in Palmview, and visit the camels at QCamel Dairy in the Glasshouse Mountains. Plus, all our wonderful beaches and bush trails enjoy!

Letters Glass House, can I help you?

LETTERS, LEUNIG AND LIGHT RELIEF Relax, read a few letters, enjoy a crossword and cartoon, and maybe put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) yourself! We would love you to share your thoughts and experiences with us and HT readers. Email: editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au or write to PO Box 818, Maleny, Qld, 4552. Please include your name, email/address and location. Letters may be edited a little if space is tight. As we are a monthly, please be aware we are unable to print date-sensitive letters.

Congrats to Gay!

Thank you for the support as I ran for Glass House over the last six months. I’m deeply committed in making politics work for ordinary people and not just for the politicians and billionaires. I am involved in many groups in my home Maleny. If there is anything I can do for other towns in Glass House, I offer you my assistance. I'd be happy to speak to your group, or help with a social, economic, justice or environmental problem in your area, or to facilitate ’town hall meetings’ in your town. Government of all levels have stopped listening to its citizens. It’s not easy being human, but our unjust structures make it harder. It was a very successful campaign for us. We doubled our supporter and volunteer base and increased our membership by 30% We got an extra seat and had more people vote for the Greens ever. When COVID subsides as the number one issue, voters will start to look at what politics can actually deliver for them. I’m not satisfied with a world that allows billionaires to pay less tax than you. I’m not satisfied with corporates buying influence by ‘donating’ to governments. I'm not satisfied that Murdoch media controls our public narrative. If you aren’t either, please contact me on andrew.mclean@qld.greens.org.au

Valuable Feedback

The HT is feeling very proud of one of team, writer Gay Liddington, as she was recently shortlisted in the AVCAT (Australian Veterans Children Assistance Trust) Essay Prize 2020. Eight entries were shortlisted and out of those were the three prize winners. Gay has not entered a writing competition for many years, let alone writing an essay, so to be considered among the winning entries is a wonderful achievement. Saying that, Gay has consistently given us beautifully written features, full of depth, emotion and insight, over the past six years, so I’m not surprised she was shortlisted. Congratulations, Gay, from all of us at the HT. Victoria McGuin – HT Editor

Change is good Well done, Rob Skelton, for winning the Nicklin seat. Thanks to Marty for his work over the last few years, but it’s exciting to see Labor having a go.

Dear Editor, At a time where so many regional newspapers have been forced to halt their presses, I feel so lucky to have our free local paper, the Hinterland Times. Every month I look forward to reading stories about 'ordinary' people doing extraordinary things in our little corner of the world. And a troubled world it is - which is why I feel the HT is so particularly important at this time, sharing and celebrating what is so special about our geographical local area while empowering us to reach out and do our bit. Like the recent story about a young man creating friendship and support groups to encourage men to talk to each other in safe and respectful spaces, an idea which has gone global. And the young mum, anxious for her children's future in a warming planet forming a local coffee/play group to push for positive actions such as the 'solar our schools' initiative to tackle this global problem.

For too long, this state has been about money, money, money more than anything with the LNP. We all know this is important, there are other things that voters are showing they care about as much – such as the environment, healthcare, connecting community – and they showed this with their votes.

The connectivity provided by the HT particularly during the months of Covid restrictions has been invaluable and I would like to thank the editor and the HT team for providing this enriching (and entertaining) service for our community.

Wishing you a successful term Rob and look forward to seeing what you can do for us.

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

SQUABBLING BIRDS

FIREFLIES

Lost in study of man’s knowledge, Books around me old through the age; Searching out the pearls of wisdom, From the writings of the sage.

The rain swept in across the river Great lashing curtains Isolating the cabin from the rest of the world The song of the water changed as its level rose And, as suddenly, the storm had gone. The still washed dusk gave way to night And in the dark, a myriad flickering lanterns lit the forest Or were they signals flashed amongst the trees Were distant stars playing hide and seek on earth? Fireworks were as nothing compared to this display And all in velvet darkness. Leaves dripping softly, The slowing murmur of the river.

Suddenly, my thoughts went soaring, At the sound of arguing; Birds of feather, got together, In the tree outside my den. What chatter! What a clatter! When both birds of different set; Claimed the right of sole inheritance, On the bough on which they met.

© Joan Dillon

As I listened to their chatter, Watching, waiting, like a judge; Both the birds were claiming bough-rights, And both-the-birds refused to budge. Even though the tree had plenty, Other boughs on which to pad; Both the Raven and the Magpie Wanted what the other had.

BERGANNS WALK

Leaving scene of disputation, Thus, returning to my den; Life’s best lessons come from nature, Other lessons from the pen.

We walked along a rustic path Undulating and serene Heard the eastern whipbird call Omnipresent but unseen The well trodden path we followed Where children rode and walked before On their way to Witta school According to the local lore

It’s a trait in all creation, Taught the birds of different clan; Selfishness is universal Found in nature as in man.

Then silence came, and I stood still Strange voices reached my ear That came drifting through the trees From long ago, but somehow near

© Peter C. Horrell

The sound of children’s laughter And a pony trotting by And I also heard a sadder sound Of a reluctant infant’s cry Then a vision came before me A procession from another time Children walking, skipping, riding A sight mystical and sublime But the calling of the whipbird Brought me back to the present day The voices and the visions faded And we went upon our way © Denzil Nash

angeCare is helping clients stay connected with loved ones this Christmas and New Year period, by offering a free iPad loan (including internet) service. Since joining the program, RangeCare’s client Daphne Haderup (pictured), has been able to increase her communication with her children, who are based both interstate and internationally. “Since the cottage lent me the iPad I have been able to talk to my daughter in Bali, and my son and grandchild in Melbourne. It’s been a bonus and I am really grateful,” Daphne said. To support clients’ transition to the new technology, complimentary tuition is provided. In Daphne’s case she has found the iPad more useful and easier to use than her existing laptop.

To help women in the Beerwah area access a free, high quality breast screening service the BreastScreen Queensland mobile service is returning to the Beerwah Community Hall from November 16 to December 16, 2020.

“The more I use it, the more I learn about it.” RangeCare have also launched a technical support service to help clients use their existing technology to the best of their ability.

Kelly Hart, Health Promotion Officer at BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast said, “Mammograms or breast screens were the most effective, proven method of detecting breast cancer early.”

“One of our technicians can assist you with setting up your electronic device, installing software and apps, troubleshooting your printer, smart TV, setting up your online banking or even help you access your favourite games,” said Jess Garey, RangeCare’s marketing officer.

Women aged 50 to 74 are strongly encouraged to have regular two-yearly breast screens. The BreastScreen Queensland Program is provided free to women aged 40 and over.

When asked about why others should get involved with the iPad program, Daphne said, “If you don’t have a hobby and you are alone, the iPad is really good because you are connected to the world.” For more information about RangeCare’s technology services or how you can stay connected with love ones from a far, give us a call on 07 5445 7044 or visit our website: rangecare.com.au/technology-loan-service

“It’s not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can make an appointment at this free service,” Ms Hart said. “Women who have not received a letter, but who would like to make an appointment at the BreastScreen mobile can call 13 20 50 or they can book online at breastscreen.qld.gov.au. “Referrals are not required.”

health, wellness and beauty

The six building blocks of mental wellbeing J

ust as our physical health requires regular attention, our mental wellbeing needs looking after too. Doing this consistently makes us feel good. It improves our outlook on life, our ability to deal with life’s challenges and has a positive influence on those around us.

1.

Get healthy. Physical health benefits mental wellbeing. Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity each day, such as walking, swimming or gardening. Eat well and go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. Try to get about eight hours of sleep per night.

2.

Keep learning and try something new. Lifelong learning keeps our brains active. This can be as simple as listening to an informative podcast or reading a book.

3.

Give back. Showing kindness and gratitude is a good way to improve our mental wellbeing as it boosts happiness hormones in our brains. Try for example helping a neighbour, volunteering or just say something nice to a friend.

4.

Connect with others. Meaningful social interactions improve our sense of connectedness - no matter how introverted we are. It can also provide us with support when we need it. Take a break from social media or texting and instead call an old friend or organise a face-to-face catch-up.

5.

Be mindful and connect with your thoughts and feelings. Research has shown that mindfulness exercises have a positive influence on mental wellbeing. Try for example a mindfulness app, watch the sun rise, enjoy art and craft or start a veggie patch.

6.

Embrace nature. Our beautiful area offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and its many benefits on our mental wellbeing.

Ayurvedic Health Advice To Suit You

Overload

T

he number of people suffering from anxiety has nearly doubled in the past five years. Younger children are reporting debilitating feelings of stress or being overwhelmed. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, while initially associated mainly with war veterans, is affecting people from all walks of life. This year has definitely brought its challenges and the ripples of the Covid-19 shutdown have spread far and wide. However a lot of people experiencing anxiety are living relatively safe, comfortable lives. So what’s causing this epidemic of anxiety and how do we deal with it?

Wendy Rosenfeldt is a teacher of Transcendental Meditation and a Maharishi Ayurvedic health practitioner.

Is our world really that much more stressful or are we just living in a way that inhibits our ability to cope? Anxiety is the body’s natural response to stress. When we are in a stressful situation we may experience fight or flight or a sense of heightened awareness. This may be useful if we need to get out of danger or are

in a situation where we need to be more vigilant. However for some this anxiety-fuelled state is brought on just by the thought of being in a social situation or having to go to work. There is much talk about how people can be overfed but undernourished and this can apply mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well. We are over stimulated with news, entertainment and extraneous facts, which may help us at a trivia night, but do nothing for our mental wellbeing. While it is good to be informed, we have to be discerning both in the content and the time spent absorbing media of any description. People following the blow-by-blow account of the Covid crisis were far more likely to experience worry and paranoia, a sneeze in public would send them scurrying for cover or compulsively hoarding toilet paper. Even so called benign information should be absorbed in moderation. Hours trawling social media can leave you feeling overloaded but dissatisfied. Students think it is the norm to study with music plugged into

the ears while conversing on Instagram to their friends. In the same way we digest food, we have to process all this information. If we ate continually we would get indigestion. Our body would be overloaded and unable to metabolise our food, leaving us feeling heavy and tired. In much the same way we need to give our minds and senses a break for them to process our experiences, inner thoughts and moods. As you wind down for the year take time to reconnect with yourself, turn off the radio while driving, exercise without the pounding music in your ears, spend a quiet evening without the chatter of the television. Encourage your teenager to take a break from the computer games, social media and web surfing.

All I want for Christmas….. is a safe climate for my kids

Yolanda Dasgupta is a mum of two boys and a disaster-management expert. She is also a member of Australian Parents for Climate Action (AP4CA), a volunteer-run group of parents from around Australia who are advocating for a safe climate for our children’s future.

I

t’s been a very hopeful time for climate action with many encouraging announcements coming out from within Australia and around the world. As someone concerned with a warming future, this was cause for hope and made me feel re-energised to continue to push for climate action. Anyone with children knows how oppressive summer can be. Just popping to the shops with two toddlers can feel like crossing the Simpson Desert. The hot car, the hot tempers, the hunkering down in the cool during the heatwaves.

At least right now, keeping my children cool is within my control. This year, despite an increased flood risk, I’m selfishly hoping that La Niña will temporarily take the edge off the warming trend. But it is with a high degree of certainty, and cannot be prevented, that there will be more hot days and that those days will be hotter than ever. That is why my greatest wish, for this and all Christmases to come is that all levels of government take urgent action to reduce emissions so children don’t have to face the nightmare scenarios that we are on track to see in their lifetime. Climate Action of the month: Send your MP an ‘All I want for Christmas’ card! A great way to go from being concerned about the warming planet is to share your concerns with a political representative and tell them that all you want for Christmas is meaningful action to address global warming. If you want to be specific, examples include: Funding solar and batteries on all schools and early childhood centres (State MP); committing to net zero emissions by 2050 (Federal MP); and declaring a Climate Emergency (local councillor). Remember, these political representatives are human beings and often parents themselves. They work hard and usually and have a genuine conviction that they are making decisions for the best interest of their communities.

Connectivity key for 2020 As we look back at the year that was, there’s no denying it’s been tough for many Sunshine Coast residents, as our region united during an unprecedented global pandemic. Now we continue to build together, supporting and strengthening our community. You can reflect with us and watch this year’s annual State of Our Region address by Mayor Mark Jamieson, joined by members of the community and hosted by Caroline Hutchinson live on Council’s Facebook and YouTube, December 8 at 10am.

Watch Council’s next Ordinary Meeting online – Thursday December 10

Global warming is a very hard reality to accept personally and unfortunately has become unnecessarily political, so I understand why many are not putting climate action foremost in their language and actions. That’s why we have to tell them it matters to us! If you would like to explore these and other actions, please join our Sunshine Coast Parents for Climate Action Coffee and Playgroup at Homegrown Café on Tuesday December 8 at 9.30am. We will be making Christmas cards and there will be face-painting. See you there!

Celebrate Christmas with us from home Join us for a wonderful night of Christmas Carols from the comfort of your own home. Get the family together at 6.30pm on December 19 and tune into the Sunshine Coast Community Carols. You can watch online via Council’s YouTube or Facebook. There’ll be performances by much loved locals Golden Beach State School Choir, Hot Ginger Chorus and Eumundi School of Rock and you’ll hear your favourite carols including Rockin Around the Christmas Tree and Jingle Bell Rock. Plus we’ll check in with Santa who will be visiting the Sunshine Coast. See Council’s website for details.

Hot Under the Collar

I

t’s getting that time of year when the temperatures are soaring, lawns withering, paddocks browning off , trees shed leaves, the bush fires danger is high and houses start to bake (unless they are well insulated) and if you don’t have air-conditioning in your car it’s time to cook in your own juices. What we need is shade and that’s a great incentive for you to plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs create shade and humidity and are nature’s air conditioners and that’s what is needed to cool the temperature and protect the delicate north European complexions of the majority of us! Rainforest trees and shrubs generally have dense, dark green foliage that provides shade and cooling temperatures (just go for a walk in Mary Cairncross on a hot day), so planting trees and shrubs will save your power bill and you from wilting! However

before I whip you into a frenzy of shade tree planting, you need to plan a bit. First you need to think about what plants will work best where. Planting with trees to the south of your house has several benefits including protecting from strong southerlys, cooling the air temperature through their shade and adding moisture to the air on a hot dry day. Most importantly when planting trees near your house always take into consideration how high the tree will grow, eg. if it can grow to forty metres, then never plant closer than forty metres to your house, so that in a worst case scenario and the tree falls down – it won’t hit your house (also keep that in mind for your neighbour’s house!) Too many times we see soaring gum trees planted on fence lines in small acreage blocks.

Planting with lower growing shrubs and groundcovers on the north side will ensure that you don’t miss out on the winter sun (let’s not forget how cold it was just a few months back!). =One way to achieve height and summer shade (and not miss out on the winter sun) is to plant deciduous trees. Luckily we do have a few deciduous native trees to choose from such as Red Cedar (Toona Ciliata), White Cedar (Melia azedarach), Tall Sandpaper Fig (Ficus fraseri), Superb Fig (Ficus superba) and White Fig (Ficus virens) – keep in mind that these are all tall trees and that figs have wide spreading root systems (so best for the bigger acreages). The added benefit of planting for your own comfort and improvement of your personal habitat is that you will also provide habitat for a lot of grateful critters that also call this place home!

t’s disturbing to learn that many of our apparently protected areas are not actually connected to other protected areas. Connection and protection together are the key to maintaining healthy and biodiverse environments.

A ready-made bee and insect hotel or the instructions and materials for making one, or a bird bath which can be placed at a safe height, are other permanent gifts. Our imaginations can go way beyond imported plastic.

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again but, Barung wishes everyone a great festive season and hopes that all family visits can take place.

We know that some gifts “keep on giving”. Plants keep on giving, and growing, while we remember the friend or relative who gave. What better gift is there? It can be a tree to add to the revegetation, a shrub for the garden, a groundcover for the rockery or a pot plant for

Clearly, it’s already hot and though it may be a wettish summer, it will be wise to choose for a hotter and drier climate. Monitor plants already in the ground remembering that your soil and its ability to hold water may be different from that of the gift recipient. Hibbertia vestita the balcony. There are plenty of choices. Shade, foliage, flowers and perfume, nectar, seeds or fruit for the wildlife can be found across a wide range of species. Barung also stocks several books, plant related of course. A really useful addition for those who want to try growing their own, and of course

With this in mind, making specific recommendations can be tricky. However, it’s worth considering Mentha or native mint for a hanging basket, Hibbertia vestita for the rockery, Dianella species for their blue/purple fruit, banksias and leptospermums for flowers and bees, or Xanthorrhoea latifolia, grass tree, as a feature plant. Lasting gifts are a pleasure for giver and receiver.

T

his is the time of year when wild koalas are most at risk. The mating season of koalas falls roughly between August and February, increasing koala movement with adults travelling to mate and joeys leaving their mothers in search of their own territory. This makes them vulnerable to human hazards such as road accidents or attacks by domesticated animals. For wildlife carers like me, this is the time it’s especially helpful to have members of the public know what to do if they encounter a koala who has been harmed or killed.

Contact Ph. 5445 7615 or M. 0412 680 801

It’s been quite a year, perhaps not so tough up here on the Range but for others extremely difficult. Some of us may have already organised their Christmas preparations, but your Barung correspondent has been attempting to avoid the issue. Time is running out.

Watch out for wildlife Our new column from wildlife carer, Rachel Aspinall

Before and After

Charcoal coloured pebbles surrounded by baby mondo amongst stone pavers create the checkerboard effect.

‘Mallee Boy’ from Maleny

It’s always sad when we lose an animal, particularly when it’s due to human intervention such as motor vehicle collisions, but there is something positive we can still salvage from these situations. The obvious one is that a dead mother may still have living joeys in their pouch which can be retrieved, raised and released into the wild. But there’s something else useful we can do too even if there is no joey. From about 22 weeks after giving birth, koalas produce a specialised form of faeces called “pap” for the joey to eat. The joey needs pap to allow it to transition from milk to eucalyptus leaves. Pap is vitally important to raising orphaned koala joeys and can’t be substituted, and it is also used for sick koalas in care to assist with their recovery. It is, therefore, important that koalas that are recently deceased, male and female, are retrieved for pap collection. Wildlife rescue services really appreciate being informed about injured or intact dead koalas, as even these can help save lives. Found an injured or sick animal? Co-operation – or just taking advantage? Platypus resting between dives - image Neil Andison

by JAMIE WALKER

W

e are all a little fascinated by anthropomorphism – the impression of human qualities in the behaviour of birds and animals. When we see wild creatures gathered together to feed or in a defence response (like mobbing a snake) we might think we see mutual assistance: but we could be looking at what is merely individuals’ self interest. Birds attract birds. If you find a flock of Silvereyes, it is worth looking at all of them. Other birds will hang on to their collective food finding abilities and predator awareness; and a flock will draw in fellow travellers like Grey Fantails, Brown Thornbills – even the occasional treat like a Rose Robin (in winter at least). A few months ago at Ewen Maddock Dam, when water levels were higher, birders watched over two dozen Australasian Grebes swimming, diving and fishing together in a group. All were in bright breeding plumage and were aloof from the species’ permanent residents foraging closer to shore. Dumpy little birds, they do not seem to be the best flyers, yet they were probably south-bound passage migrants who travel together at night to avoid predators and, by day, co-operate to find and exploit shoals of little fish. Little Black Cormorants do the same thing. As they swim in a posse, driving fish before them, the birds at the back continually leapfrog to the front and dive into the shoal to catch their share. When the cormorant pack is working close to the shore, Herons and Egrets stalk and quickstep to fish alongside them – taking advantage of the swimmers’ skills. Nature wastes no opportunity and every space is filled. But cooperation also has a dark side. Noisy Miners form large social groups. Every member helps defend their territory and feeds young in the nest. However, these ‘happy family’ practices are wholly introverted for the sole support of their own (all too common) species

whose behaviour is murderously pugnacious to all others. Their natural habitat is clearings and forest edges, but they have now disproportionately benefitted from bush removal and creation of urban areas. Their malign predominance in some places, is of our own making. Friends and family who walk by the ObiObi Creek in Maleny, tell me about the ‘partnership’ they witness between another cormorant, the Little Pied, and platypus. ”If you see the cormorant on the water, look for the platypus swimming and diving close to it,” they say. Of course, the platypus’s rooting about on the river bed (seeking small invertebrates) will disturb fish and yabbies and reveal them to the bird. Some observers have also watched Eel-tailed Catfish (too big for the small waterbird’s bill) apparently joining the underwater hunt. Cooperation? Partnership? A bird taking advantage of the side effects of another’s survival techniques? It’s hard to tell. This could be an excellent study for citizenscience.

I

can hardly believe its December 2020! Trees are still growing and trees are still falling over, and they are usually Gum trees, along with a few really big Fig trees. We had a bit of a storm in Maleny on Saturday the 31st of October, but at the same time Eumundi got smashed by a supercell that tore a narrow strip of destruction through the landscape up there. You can still see some damage along the highway just south of the Eumundi turnoff. Along the highway Acacia Melanoxylon, the Blackwoods, often incorrectly called black wattles, were the species most affected. Away from the highway, in areas where people had gone for a ‘tree change’ and built among the Eucalypt forest, there was some catastrophic tree failures. In one instance a large Gumtree centre punched a two-storey home. The broken branch stubs of its lateral limbs drove into the earth through the kitchen floor on the lower level. The only thing that saved the family was that they were attending a Halloween party elsewhere and came home to find their place destroyed. I can’t say it any other way, if they are not managed, large Gum trees are dangerous. I love trees, but this is reality folks. Get your trees checked by an arborist before the storm season really kicks off. Touch trees!

Go big or go small? D

espite the increase in popularity of ‘tiny homes’, in Australia it seems we are building bigger homes at the moment.

Despite the increase in popularity of ‘tiny homes’, in Australia it seems we are building bigger homes than many other countries. A new CommSec Home Size Trends report found that new houses built in Australia during the 2019/2020 financial year were on average 235.8 square metres, a 2.9% jump and the biggest increase in 11 years.* In New Zealand, the average size of a new house as of June 2020 was 157.4 square metres and Canada, 221.1 square metres. Our new houses are also bigger than those in the USA, which during the 2019 calendar year, dropped for the fourth year, tumbling 3% to 233.1 square metres. However, CommSec Chief Economist, Craig James, highlighted that there was a trend toward building smaller houses in Australia before 2019.

44 DECEMBER 2020 HINTERLAND TIMES

“The size of the average house built last year (2018/19) was the smallest in 17 years. So, while Aussies built bigger homes over the past year, the big question is whether the decade-long downtrend in home size has ended. And COVID-19 may play a big role in answering that question. “With more time spent at home for both leisure and work, some Aussies are looking for bigger homes,” he said. “Others are coming to the belief that the layout of their home needs changing.” As we have seen on the Sunshine Coast, more and more Aussies are embracing working from home, opting to move out of the city in preference for a larger home in the stunning hinterland or by our beautiful beaches. We really do live in the best place. * Source: BusinessInsider.com.au
