e are adapting to circumstances in this issue of the HT, just like everyone else. Some of our usual articles have been modified because events have been cancelled, normal routine has been suspended, and we are all adjusting to the temporary changes in our lives and communities.

How a musician and chef are adapting to change

I have covered this more extensively on the opposite page, so here I would like to update readers on a change in our delivery system.

Time for a takeaway! Who’s offering what across the Range

We love our paper, and we want to make sure any home deliveries reach readers who feel the same. We also want to make sure we are being environmentally conscious and not just delivering to people who don't necessarily read the HT. Therefore, we have decided to focus on our bulk drops to various outlets (which has expanded to over 65 locations) and reduce our home deliveries, which happened along parts of the Range.

We are very happy to keep delivering to those who would prefer it. Just email your address to manager@hinterlandtimes. com.au, or call 5499 9049 and leave your details. You can find a list of our bulk drop locations on our website, under the heading at the top when you hover with the mouse 'Pick up an HT', or type: hinterlandtimes.com.au/ delivery.

You are also welcome to read the monthly editions online, just visit issuu.com/hinterlandtimes and click on the edition you are interested in. Or e-subscribe through our website or facebook page to automatically receive the HT each month via email. Now is a time to rally together (while keeping physically apart!) and look after one another. Yes, we’ve seen some selfish people, acting in a reactive rather than proactive way, but I am also seeing many acts of kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness every day.

Community Support by VICTORIA MCGUIN

I

am a walking contradiction. I like space and order, and yet my home has random piles of papers and books, notes scribbled on the back of envelopes, and perennial piles of washing to put away. I am also a worrier, who tends to see the ‘worst case scenario’ first in situations (it’s exhausting), but paradoxically I am at heart an optimist who likes to find the best result in a circumstance. Take the current world state, with so many of us feeling anxious and unhappy about the Coronavirus. I’ll admit, when I’ve spent too long online, or I read or watch the mainstream media, I can feel myself spiral into panic. (I imagine many of us feel this way.) But I have also noticed my kick-in survival mode has surfaced. I am looking for the best outcomes in a challenging time. The positives hidden in the negative. This is not to minimise or belittle the seriousness of the time, especially for those who are older or have compromised immune systems and illness. Most of us have people close to us who are at risk, so this is a time when those who are not high risk need to act responsibly, to be the gatekeepers and guardians for those who are. But I also realise that we need to find some light, some hope, and some different approaches to cope at this time.

We do home delivery!

So, in this issue of the HT, we aim to try and ease the anxiety a little. Creative Cuts has creative ideas if you have to self-isolate; there are numbers and websites to contact if you’re feeling stressed; there is a homemade hand sanitiser recipe, and a breathing technique to help you feel calmer. We also have a special double feature on (now exCouncillor) Jenny McKay, who has stepped down after many years of dedicated service to our wide community, plus other stories, poetry, local initiatives to keep people connected and Back to Nature - pieces to give you a small rest from the intensity of the world right now.

If you would like to share information, or positive stories, or send your thanks to someone for our May issue, please write to us, or email editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au This may be a time for physical distancing, but we can still be social - through sending messages and sharing news in our community papers (print or online), using apps for chats, and the good old-fashioned telephone. Let's keep our connection as strong as we can.

This page 3 introduces our Community Support initiative - a dedicated page we would like to run each month for local businesses to share their details and services during this tricky time. If you would like to be involved for the May issue, please contact Karen Muir or Craig Spalding, who can help. Our Food Drink Dine section also has details of many eateries who are still open for a takeaway service or offer home delivery. Please support these businesses, they are vital pieces of the fabric of our community. If we can publicise information you would like out there, please let us know. We have a busy Facebook page with hundreds of people reading each post (in fact, some of our recent posts have received over 5,000 views), and we are regularly updating our page with any local news we hear. We also have Instagram to spread messages.

Jenny goes on to share some of her precious childhood memories, like walking to the one-teacher school at Kiamba. The kids who lived the farthest from school would stop at each of the farm gates on the way to collect more pupils with the entire school arriving at school en masse. Back then, life was simpler and rules weren’t as strict. With great amusement, Jenny recalls the day when all the kids decided to wag school and spent the day at the creek instead. “The teacher got the day off!” she laughs. Yandina was the nearest town for Jenny’s family, so a trip to Nambour was like going to the big smoke. “That really meant your socks and shoes,” she explains. Cr McKay at work with Kids in Action 

After marrying and having three children back on the Sunshine Coast, volunteering in the local community was a natural progression. Jenny became involved in the establishment of the Palmwoods/Woombye/Eudlo Safety House and Palmwoods Outside School Care Programs. All this while, Jenny was working full-time as an administration clerk with the Queensland Police Force. Jenny served as the president of the Palmwoods Guides, Palmwoods Sports Grounds Users Group and held executive positions on both Burnside and Nambour State High Schools. But an achievement she is most proud of is being the longest serving parent on the Palmwoods State School P&C for 17 years. It was much easier to get things done back then because there was much less red tape, she says. “My husband owned a local contracting business, donating his time and expertise with other locals to build the school ovals, etcetera.

In the end, Jenny admits it needed commitment from her husband, children and all her family. “You open up your heart and your house. It was important for them (the constituents) to know who you were and where to find you.” In the year 2000, Jenny was elected to the old Maroochy Shire Council. At the time, the size of the division in the old Maroochy Shire was about 4,500 people and Palmwoods, Woombye, Eudlo were all Jenny’s home ground. She settled comfortably into her new government role and worked hard. Poignantly, Jenny clearly remembers the day that Daniel Morecombe went missing in December 2003. Demonstrating her trademark fierceness in protecting her community, she initiated the Walk for Daniel.

“Parents built playgrounds. We as the mothers – we would do the catering, the sandwiches – we got things done. We had great school fairs with great participation.” So it was this extensive involvement with her local communities that gave Jenny the solid grounding to move into local government. She was well known – the community was on her side. After leaving the Queensland Police Force, Jenny began looking for the right opportunity to become involved in any “It was a great experience to come into town to Bayards Corner, for Christmas, it was real. The big Christmas stocking of the Salvos, and Santa Claus – because he didn’t appear then in multiple layers every month of the year. It made those things very beautiful.”

level of government.

Jenny fondly reflects on her time at Nambour High School – Nambour State College as it is known today. Her ambition for life in public office was set when she won the ‘Nambour School Citizen Award’ in grade 11. It was then she began dreaming of the day that she would work in government, serving the people, though she wasn’t sure how she was going to make that happen.

But getting her family to warm to the idea was not easy – after all, she was going to be in the public eye 24/7 and anyone with the name ‘McKay’ would be a person of interest – including her children. It would mean being stopped in the street or supermarket by voters who wanted to discuss council business.

Upon leaving school and gaining local employment, Jenny became involved in volunteering at such events as the Yandina Street Fair before moving to Brisbane to work in the Queensland Treasury Building for Education Queensland.

“People were always my passion and the local government is the closest thing to the people. I was aware the local councillor was retiring, so the timing was right,” she says.

Jenny’s husband challenged her: “Why would you want to do this? People are always complaining about everything, all sorts of dogsbody things.” But Jenny’s passion eventually won him over. She was determined to “work with communities, to create things, to build things.”

Cr Jenny Mckay, getting her hands dirty for Kids in Action

“I had watched those beautiful boys grow up. I watched them walk to school. I actually started the Walk for Daniel. And that was just out of the love for that little boy and those parents.” The Walk for Daniel, now in its 16th year, raises money and awareness around the education, protection and support for children to be safe from abuse and risk of harm. Then came the big shake up of the council mergers in 2008. “They were interesting times and challenging times too.”

The merger would see the realignment of each division boundary, after which Jenny’s new Division 5 would see the number of constituents quadruple to 20,000 people.

every dirt track, over cattle grids, through creeks and barbed wire fences. And the only spare time she had was at the end of a hectic day in the Maroochy Shire Council Chambers.

“So I asked myself, how am I going to do this challenge? I decided I would do it through hard work. I’d use my skills of being a people’s person, of trying to keep the big picture and staying aware of all the things that are going on around me. I’m here to represent everyone in the best interest.”

“My husband again and a team, we personally either door knocked or letter dropped about 87% of every road in that division. We did that after work.

Knowing that if she was to win the respect and be meaningful to the voters of her newly expanded patch, she would have to get to know first-hand how and where they all lived. That was an enormous task. It meant getting off her backside and trekking to the far reaches of Maleny, Connondale, Booloumba Creek…

“I thank him today for his support because I couldn’t have done it without it.” The hard work paid off, and Jenny became the Councillor for Division 5 in the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council in 2008. The tenacity to fight for the things she truly believes in embodies the character of the woman herself. Strong. Focused. Clear thinking. Positive. Compassionate. Honest. In an era when Australian politics grows murkier and more confusing every day, Jenny’s honesty is reassuring.

There are no vague insinuations or false promises, only genuine assurances that she will fight for the cause.

“It could be very much like life today, except without the pay packet!” she laughs.

When Jenny first entered local government, the job was just about roads, rates and rubbish. Now the council’s role has graduated into what Jenny describes as a ‘quasi state government’, i.e. it has to try and balance the economy and unemployment – a balance that does not always resonate with voters who simply want footpaths, sealed roads and playgrounds.

“I do have a passion towards those less fortunate than myself, so I will continue to volunteer and support such groups. Because I suffer lymphoedema now (Jenny battled breast cancer during her term in office) I will continue to give back to that, help fund raise, do whatever I can.

There are Workplace Health and Safety laws which have stifled the partnerships with non-profit organisations. No longer can the local council team up with the likes of Lions, Apex or Rotary to build playgrounds, equipment sheds or other community infrastructure. It must be remembered that Jenny is also a wife, mother and grandmother, and like any loving grandmother, she is concerned about the legacy being left for her grandchildren. “I’ve got grandchildren that live in the hinterland. They need to have the employment opportunities.” This introduces the topic of the council’s massive undersea cable project which will make the Sunshine Coast an international hub for technology – a project that does not remotely resemble the old job description of roads, rates and rubbish.

“I’m part of the Macquarie Institute – University Institute of Research – my arm is, so I’m always willing to be a guest speaker at any forums where I could share what I’m able to. “But I’m just looking forward to a slower life. I’m looking forward to getting my garden up to scratch, a few garden parties, a lot more friends over, and more family time. And a little bit of ‘me’ time.” It sounds like the word ‘retirement’ is not in Jenny’s vocabulary. Councillor McKay, we sincerely thank you for your 20 years of selfless and dedicated service and wish you all the best in the next phase of your remarkable life. And it would be to our great delight if we read of noise complaints from Palmwoods residents about rowdy garden parties.

SURVIVAL MODE Covid19 is having a worse impact than the Global Financial Crisis of 2007. Australians have recently battled through devastating drought, fires and floods. Now we are faced with probably the most challenging times for the entire planet since WWII. We are hearing more bad news every day and this is leading to more fear and worry in our community. Our heartfelt thoughts are with those who are unwell at this time and to those who are looking after loved ones. Time is the answer to surviving this health and economic nightmare we all face. During the 2007 Financial Crisis, many business were put to the test and had to change, adapt, shrink and reinvent themselves to survive. Many did not survive. Some businesses will be affected more than others, but in this circumstance it will be a miracle if any business is unscathed. We are indeed fortunate to live in a country that offers a safety net to the most vulnerable.

Given the massive changes that Jenny has faced throughout her busy time as a councillor, it’s not surprising that she admits that ‘relaxing’ is not something that she has done well in the past. However, her children and grandchildren have been a great source of delight for her.

The Australian spirit will be tested and our generosity will be needed now more than ever. A local focus is vital. Cafés and restaurants adapting to takeaway options will keep those businesses afloat, so please support them and any business that is trying to adapt in these challenging times. Communications are now better than ever in our history, enabling us to keep in touch with family and friends. So, pick up the phone and call and check on your families and friends and make sure

When I ask ‘what’s next for Jenny?’ the answer is not surprising.

$16100 needs to be changed to $1640

“My husband, Hanno, and I met in Queensland, married in his homeland of Germany and have lived in Landsborough for 23 years. We’ve been married for 40 years and have two amazing sons and three grandchildren.” In 2007, Rhonda set up a blog to share her stories and experiences as she embarked on a journey of early retirement. “I opened the blog to share what we were discovering. We began living well on less than we ever thought possible and our days became enriching, productive and meaningful.”

She then continued on to publish three books by Penguin, become a monthly columnist for the Australian Women’s Weekly and Burke’s Backyard, and was interviewed on ABC radio regularly. “I freelanced and worked productively in my home and Hanno owned and operated a local store in Montville called Montville Lifestyle. The store sold a range of bespoke furniture, framed prints and homewares.” Rhonda may also be a familiar face from her time working as a volunteer coordinator at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre from 2006-2011. She helped

move the centre from the old butter factory to the blue house near Maleny Hotel and then into the new building where it still operates. “I helped as part of the team to design the new centre which included the community garden, community kitchen and Flexi School. It was fun and a real privilege to be involved in that community process. “I really enjoyed working with an amazing group of people and helping the people who came through the doors. The neighbourhood centre is a beautiful, vital centre and an important resource for the Maleny community. “I only stopped my work there when Hanno had a nasty chainsaw accident. He badly damaged his hand and wrist and needed a lot of daily care throughout 2011. But that gave me more time to write about how we were living on the blog and to start writing my first book.

Rhonda developed how-to workshops for freelance writing skills which were run online and in-person. “I have an Arts degree with majors in Journalism, Literature and Communication and qualifications in technical writing. My blog has had over 30 million hits, I felt this was the right time to share my experiences and help writers develop their skills and get published. “I started with a blogging workshop as more people are writing blogs for business or pleasure and in the beginning, learning how to build a blog and create content is the main focus. “It’s hard work. You have to be a little bit deranged to have the obsession to write every day, but it is worth it! The more you write, the more people have the chance to read your work.”

“The work you do in your own home will enrich you and make you a different person. It saved me from a life of ridiculous spending and mindless acquisition.”

She then developed a writing workshop, specifically for writers who have some writing experience and want to know more about writing a book, magazine or online articles.

Regular followers of Rhonda’s blog may know that she received a large blow in 2018 when she was diagnosed with a nonmalignant brain tumour.

“In the writer’s workshop, I focus more on the publishing process, approaching editors, writing a synopsis, a proposal and creating an author portfolio.

Blog followers kept in touch with supportive comments and concern. Rhonda shared an optimistic and cautious post ending with “No promises about keeping the blog going. Let’s see how it pans out.

“I feel it is important as we grow older to not just retire and opt-out. I published my first book at 64 years of age for Penguin, we all need to share our knowledge to help the generations to come.”

“This way of living had slowed me down enough to allow me to see the beauty surrounding me. It changed the way I worked, and I knew that I needed to focus on my health as a priority.

Rhonda’s personable and relatable style of writing reaches well beyond the page. We have a local treasure here and it is a pleasure to see the seasons unfold through Rhonda’s watchful eyes.

“I wanted to use our brains and our self-sufficiency to earn income. In doing that, we realised a lot of people wanted to do exactly the same.”

Leafy green arches and winding pathways dazzle with flowers, the smell of fragrant herbs and even the odd, random friendly chicken at the Yandina Community Garden. As you wander in you are greeted by friendly people and an awe for the space they have created there. A green space teaming with life and discovery, not unlike a scene from the secret garden.

s populations grow and more and more people become renters or move to apartments, flats and new urban areas, community Growing friendships and food, gardens have become Andrew and Jonathon are a big part of the success of the an oasis in the cities and Yandina Community Garden provide much needed places for communities not just to grow food, but also to connect with nature, destress, socialise and learn. Gardening Australia’s Jerry Colbey-Williams who has taught a permaculture workshop at Yandina Community Garden said community gardens are growing in popularity across Australia. Many unusual types of plants and vegetables are found at the Yandina Community Gardens 

“Community gardens, like garden clubs, form a vital social network. They are also places where people can gain skills and prepare for and respond to the emerging food crisis. Renting a plot at a community garden is both a logical and social way to garden if you don’t own land.” And according to a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson, community gardens have become more popular in recent years and the Sunshine Coast now has eight council-supported community gardens across the region at Buddina, Lake Kawana, Alexandra Headland, Steps Nursery (Caloundra), Cotton Tree, Bells Reach, Nambour and Yandina and also several private community gardens, such as the one in Palmwoods. “Community gardens are places where people come together to grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers in a supportive community context. The community gardens promote relationship building, intergenerational knowledge sharing, generate social activities and of course the growing of delicious organic produce to be shared amongst the members, friends and the wider community.

Jonathon says the Yandina Community Garden has a really strong community spirit and friendly atmosphere. “Some community gardens everyone buys lots but ours is very much an open style for everyone. We have a lot of stuff you probably don’t find in your traditional nurseries too. A lot of native fruits, jaboticabas, jack fruit etc, a range of chilis, yacon, of course lots of practical things but also things that you just wouldn’t see in the supermarket. Plenty of variety and

rare gems.”

“Community gardens help to bring a community together and also play an important role in the wellbeing of many people who would otherwise not have an opportunity to till the soil and enjoy the health and nutritional benefits of fresh home-grown produce. “They have fantastic environmental benefits including helping to reduce food miles, integrating organic waste recycling and offering an educational hub to reconnect children, families and other members of the community with fresh fruit and vegetables…There are significant social and environmental benefits.” Peeking out from the flowers and trees at Yandina’s community garden is a plant nursery which sells plants and bee, bug and bat homes, the Blue House which is a hub for learning and community, an outdoor pizza oven donated by a local company, an impressive compost and potting mix station, a chicken pen and the stand out, incredible Indigenous art pieces in key places.

The garden is very community based and says they would like to develop that more. “We’d love to get school groups in, that is something to work towards. We have some special needs groups that come and give us a hand which is great.

One of the regular, talented gardeners at Yandina Community Garden is Andrew Chambers who knows so much about the garden and says the workshops have always been popular. “We have how to keep bees, how to have a native garden, how to have sustainable housing, permaculture, cassava planting, we’ve had locals like Dale Chapman a local chef and we have even had Colbey-Williams and Costa.” For people wanting to find out more about the Yandina Community Garden Jonathon says one of the best ways is their free newsletter, “We also encourage suggestions on topics for potential workshops that others might be interested in as well.”

We have even partnered with a few local businesses who are keen to get on board with their food scraps like a local coffee shop called Lawn Expresso, Jeffers Fruit and Veg Shop and a dairy farmer that is about 15 minutes out of Nambour, who donated a lot of their cow manure. “It is these larger scale projects that means we can expand and produce much larger volumes which will be a real benefit to everyone. ANZAC Day

ost of us now know that this year’s ANZAC Day services have had to be cancelled, for the safety and well-being of the public and veterans. There will be a televised national event from the Canberra war memorial. However, we still feel it is important to recognise and collectively remember those who have served and sacrificed for our way of life in this month’s HT.

As the RSL website states: As the sun rose on 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers rowed towards the shores of Gallipoli and into history itself. Every year since, as the sun rises, Australians gather across the nation to remember their legacy, and the legacy of all those who have followed in their footsteps.

ANZAC Day in Maleny 2019 -image Màrshâ Fòtõgräfie 

This tradition began over a century ago, when the ANZAC soldiers marched in London to Westminster Abbey for a service attended by the King and Queen to commemorate a year since their fateful landing at Gallipoli in 1915. Most of the men recruited into the Australian Imperial Force at the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 were sent to Egypt to meet the threat which the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), posed to British interests in the Middle East and to the Suez Canal. On April 25 1915, thousands of men were deployed to assist a British naval operation which aimed to force the Dardanelles Strait and capture the Turkish capital, Constantinople. These men set off by ship for the Gallipoli peninsula to defend our national and individual core values, many losing their lives, but their ultimate sacrifice made a great impact on the history and respect for Australia as a nation. As decades have passed, the ANZAC legacy has remained with the values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice at the core of commemorative speeches around the country. Wreath for ANZAC Day – image Victoria McGuin 

ANZAC Day is when we pause to remember every soldier, airman or sailor who lost their life defending Australia. It’s also a time to pause and think about those who are currently serving our country across the world. This year, the RSL is calling on all Australians to honour the service by standing at the end of their driveways or on a balcony for a minute’s silence at 6am this ANZAC Day. The idea gathered momentum on social media, and is a wonderful way to collectively honour our service people – even though we cannot physically be together. As the RSL says: This ANZAC Day, wherever you may be, when you pause to remember those heroes who braved the gunfire that fateful morning in Gallipoli, and every Australian soldier who has followed in their footsteps to defend our country, take a moment to reflect on the many different meanings of ANZAC Day and how our Defence Force, through incredible sacrifice, has helped shape our country into the great place it is today. Lest we forget. Donations gratefully received to RSL Queensland’s ANZAC Day Appeal at anzacappeal.com.au, with funds forwarded to Districts and Sub Branches for use in their local communities.

Lanie Sutherland and Andrea Kirwin are thinking creatively during these challenging times

Sunshine C Hinterla

Andrea added, “Our number one priority is the safety of our community. So, sadly, we will have to postpone this exciting idea and hope that things improve for everyone. “People need hope during these times, and it was our vision to help celebrate birthdays and special times together, but with a small group and following the correct protocols. “We all have to be creative. See if there are any safe avenues to try. We need to find new ways to keep the musicians going, as we are all struggling right now.”

ambour-based musician, Andrea Kirwin, and Mooloolah-based chef, Lanie Sutherland, are not only excellent in their chosen professions, but they also know how to think outside the box. With cancelled shows and food events, the pair came up with a creative solution to hopefully help keep them afloat, but also bring some pleasure to families and friends across the hinterland.

However, during the course of a week when they first shared their idea to the production dates for the HT, things changed dramatically, and so the plans are on hold. Lanie, who runs catering company Spotted Dog Sunshine Coast, has lost 20 planned catering events over the next few months, and Andrea’s bookings are drying up or being postponed during this difficult period.

“Within current government health and safety guidelines, we were planning on doing very small boutique events, for families or (low risk) groups of less than 10 people, in an outdoor space where people can be 2 metres apart.

“We are all in the same boat, everyone is having a tough time,” said Lanie. “And we hoped to bring some cheer and relieve the stress for an evening for people, while following social distancing rules. We were aiming to be smart and help each other through this really tough time.

“Andrea was to play her wonderful music, and I planned to cook for you,” explained Lanie, “following strict health and hygiene rules, which I am used to already in my profession.”

“As I get most of my produce from the amazing small farms and businesses across the Sunshine Coast, I was also hoping to help out other local workers and families too.”

But let’s keep our focus on a time when we can all village atmospheres, be tempted connect in person once again - and hopefully we can invite Lanie and Andrea to help us celebrate.

INGREDIENTS 2 cups fresh basil leaves 1/2 cup freshly grated Romano or Parmesan-Reggiano cheese (approx 2 ounces) 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup pine nuts (can substitute with chopped walnuts) 3 pcs garlic cloves, minced (about 3 teaspoons)

Once you have a batch, you have so many ways to use it: Spread it on toasted ciabatta or French bread, with chopped cherry tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil; bake some sweet potatoes, then add pesto butter (4 spoonfuls of soft butter mixed with ½ cup pesto); toss in al dente pasta and add steamed broccoli; stir in with steamed green beans and a splash of lemon juice; toss in a tuna salad; mix into hummus; brush over cooked steak; marinade chicken in ½ cup of pesto and ¼ cup cider vinegar with hot sauce and honey and roast on high for 45 minutes; mix with salmon when making fish cakes… The list is endless – just experiment and see how pesto can brighten your culinary repertoire!

1/4 tsp salt 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper METHOD In a food processor, pulse the basil and pine nuts several times. Add the garlic and cheese, make sure you have a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides as you go. Add the olive oil slowly when the food processor is pulsing – this helps it emulsify and stops the olive oil separating. Stir in salt and pepper, you can add more to suit your taste. Pop into a bowl and enjoy using any way you choose!

WITTA MARKET L

ast month, the Witta Market was faced with a new challenge we could not have predicted. Even though we were blessed with the forecast of gorgeous sunshine, a luscious green field which has had its fill of summer rain and plenty of enthusiastic stall holders wanting to trade, we were challenged to adapt and evolve with the world. The platform provided by the market, of local trading in a community, could not be more important than right now. It is a place where local small businesses and entrepreneurs can share their passionate creations to earn an income. It also provides our local patrons with a single destination that is easily accessible for all these producers and their products. Witta Market is committed to continue to provide this platform for our hinterland community for as long as we are allowed. While we are implementing changes and, of course, promoting best hygiene practice with both customers and stall holders, we believe shopping in the open air with plenty of space is an incredibly valuable asset to our community during these times. On a more exciting note, the beginning of the year has seen some great developments for the Witta Market. The Old Witta School Management Committee has

upgraded the power to the grounds. This now means the market can offer more powered sites and will help the market expand its range of offerings. Witta Market has also expanded to have some of its arts and craft stall holders underneath the school. Protected from the weather, it has allowed stall holders with fragile items to attend markets without worrying about rain. We encourage everyone in the hinterland community to support their local small businesses and markets during this challenging time. Together we can live locally and create resilience within our community. Witta Markets are held in the grounds of The Old Witta School on the third Saturday of each month from 7am-12pm. Put Saturday April 18 in your diary and enjoy a morning with us. Please check our social media for updates, as the situation may change over the coming weeks. Public toilet soap

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is one of the most dynamic and prestigious visual arts awards in Australia. The diverse range of 40 works by established and emerging artists from across the country will be showcased in an exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 20 to October 11, 2020. The exhibition will be a reflection of outstanding contemporary 2D arts practice in Australia. The Major Prize is $25,000 and is generously funded by Argon Law and Sunshine Coast Council.

The 2020 Easter Art Show by the Blackall Range Visual Artists, which was to be held at St Mary’s Hall on the Green, Montville from April 10 – 19, has sadly been cancelled.

Sunshine Coast Council will install and maintain soap dispensers in all public toilet facilities across the region to help combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This art group has just celebrated 17 years together (pictured), pursuing new techniques and improving their skills. The woman wearing the black apron, in the right-hand corner, is Marianne Reardon who is the member who put an advert in the paper 17 years ago asking if any person would be interested in getting together to pursue visual art!

The soap dispensers will be installed over the coming weeks. They will be maintained over the next few months, provided council can continue to source supplies.

The Official Opening of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize is on Thursday August 27, 6-8pm. Registrations appreciated, visit: gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Art-Prizes/Sunshine-Coast-Art-Prize

The group has gone from strength to strength and is a much-loved part of the community. We look forward to seeing their work again in the future.

Council public toilet facilities are regularly serviced by council’s cleaners. Council encourages the community to report any dangerous items, hazards or vandalism at parks by phoning (07) 5475 7272.

Time out from stress Hypnotherapist Christian Dunham contacted the HT wanting to help relieve some of the anxiety people are feeling at the moment.

Urgent appeal Bloomhill Cancer Care has announced an emergency appeal as it faces an unprecedented financial crisis. Uncertainty around future events and projected impacts to their Op Shop income means over 70% of their income stream is now at risk – this will have an unimaginable impact on their cancer care services and community outreach programs. Right here, right now, you can make a difference. Please donate today, visit: bloomhill. com.au/appeals and click ‘donate’ or call 5445 5794.

He is offering a free hypnotherapy MP3 that people can download from his website to help lower their anxiety. Called 'Gifts', it is a very gentle self-hypnosis MP3 designed to create a deep feeling of relaxation and give a bit of time out from all the stress. Please see christiandunham.net and feel free to download and share it with anyone else you think might benefit.

Wood Expo cancelled In line with the Federal Government’s directive, Barung Landcare regrets to advise of their decision to cancel the Maleny Wood Expo planned for May 2 - 4.

As we are all well aware, there has been a fair amount of panic buying recently, which has meant some people have stashed tons of toilet rolls, hand sanitisers and various staple foods, leaving others with nothing.

Lunch to go!

Barung Landcare completely supports the government’s initiatives to slow the spread of infection, as the health of our community should always take precedence. However they cannot help but be disappointed, for Barung, for the exhibitors, and more generally for the Maleny and broader Sunshine Coast community.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will be cancelling their Thursday Community Lunch until the end of March and possibly longer.

They would like to pay tribute to all the hard work of the Expo committee, led by Steve McLeish, over the last 18 months, and to acknowledge the significant commitment by sponsors, exhibitors and volunteers.

Emergency relief is now only available between 9am and midday, Monday - Friday.

Mix them in a bowl and decant into a clean pump or soap bottle. You could add a drop of essential oil if you like – just make sure it’s one that’s safe for your skin.

If you require emergency relied, are self-isolating or need your food package delivered please call the Centre. They are liaising with volunteers to help with deliveries, but this may not be immediate.

Remember the gel needs to stay in a sealed container to prevent evaporation of the alcohol, because evaporation will reduce the concentration of the alcohol. Keep it in a fridge for prolonged use.

The front door to the Centre will be closed, but they still have a good supply of frozen cooked meals, which are available for sale from $5 per meal. If you knock or ring on 5499 9345, they will bring your meal to you.

Advertising bookings due prior (best to phone rst to make sure we are open)

to the 21st of each month! JAMES FRAMES

If you’d like to make you own hand sanitiser, here is what you will need: ⅔-cup rubbing alcohol (80-99% isopropyl alcohol), and ⅓-cup aloe vera gel (or perhaps squeeze some from your own plants)

AN ACCIDENT IN YOUR HOME ion & Advice – OCCUPIER’S LIABILITY An accident causing someone injury in your home

on is adoes priority at Bush andyouBeach not necessarily mean that as the occupier r clients are happy to attest toyou the is liable for that injury. As an occupier are only ordable service weis provide. liable if an accident caused by your failure to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect the person being injured.

458 659 The key710 words are ‘reasonable care’.

As you may have suspected already there is no hard and fast rule about what amounts to ‘reasonable care’ or lack of such care. It depends very much on the nature of the premises, the type of danger and the reason for entry. An example is a defective staircase in a house would be a danger to most people but would not be a danger to the tradesperson engaged to fix the staircase. You may think that provided that your visitor has been warned of the danger then this would be sufficient to protect you from liability. However a warning is not always sufficient to protect you from liability. The occupier’s duty is to take ‘reasonable care’ to protect your visitor from danger – not simply to warn your visitor of the danger. Sometimes a warning may be sufficient but other times not depending on the type of danger. What of a person who enters your premises without your permission – a trespasser? The law holds that if you know or you have reason to suspect that a trespasser is on your premises, you have a duty to that trespasser to take reasonable care to protect that person from injury. This duty does vary depending on the circumstances. An example here would be the requirement on you to fence a pool to prevent a child trespasser from being injured or drowned. Finally, a landlord has a statutory duty, under the Residential Tenancies Act (Qld) 1994, to keep premises in good order and repair. A landlord may be liable if a tenant is injured on the premises, the injuries occurred as a result of the landlord’s failure to repair defects and the landlord knew of the defects.

That gives clients peace of mind that they are not up for legal fees before they have even had advice on their questions.

What a time we are in. I would just like to say a huge thank you to all those who are helping on the front line. The amazing nurses, doctors, medical staff and hospital support workers. The small business owners who are running little supermarkets, the people working at petrol stations, the drivers, the carers.

And of course, the teachers, who have been dealing with a confusing situation, whilst trying to teach and plan lessons for online work. What a challenging time for everyone.

The least we can do for all these people, is stay home as much as possible. Take walks, chat to people online or on the phone, or from across the road! Nurture ourselves and our loved ones. Use this opportunity to centre ourselves and create a gentle routine for the weeks ahead. Too much media is overwhelming and often conflicting, so I would recommend sticking to one or

It’s nice to choose an area, do the walk, and take in the poetry on the way. Gives the whole experience something extra. We take a picnic and it’s some gentle fitness in nature plus food – what’s not to like? It’s easy to stay a few metres away from other people as there’s plenty of space! The walks are in Montville, Kenilworth, Maleny, Yandina, Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary and Point Cartwright. We’ve done three so far. It’s a good project to maybe do one a week. Anyway, just sharing in case it helps.

Hey HT. Thanks for your consistently positive publication. This is no doubt a challenging time for you, and I just wanted to say I hope you are supported by our community, since you bring so much joy to it. Keep going, keep bringing us some of the good stuff out there – we need it!

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

Memories of late night walks along salty promenades, The sound of laughter and freedom mingling with the warm breeze,

of mourning.

bonny buds so fair come tumbling to your shoulders you shake them from your hair

As it caresses my skin and lifts my hair. oh tonight I will be travelling

Butterflies flutter in my stomach Flowers fold

In anticipation of the promise of youth and discovery.

in foetal grief.

Revelling in the pure joy of life unfolding across the moonlit bay,

through the cool grace of sleep searching for you lassie as I cross the frozen deep

While lights twinkle in the mountains And the music from a nearby tavern dances with my soul.

The air weeps dew.

we’ll climb the craggy peaks

At times I yearn for that pocket of the past,

But in the midst of death

But Spain comes to me on the wind and,

we’ll sip the yellow moon

For a moment, I am there once again.

we’ll lay on silver grasses we’ll breathe the night’s perfume

we are in life. © V Bensted

I’ll be there with you Dodie

Colours kiss the hills,

I’ll braid your sunny hair

I’ll tell you that I love you I’ll tell you that I care

And the night is born

I’ll dance with you sweet Dodie

LAMENTATION

OUR LAND

This disillusioned heart is old.

Stretched out there

Our flora and fauna

We must learn to conserve

Twas once idealist youth and bold,

Is the horizon bare,

In this world so rare,

What we still have there,

Which is one of the things

These are the things

For these are the things

That we are meant to share.

For which we should care.

We are meant to share.

The mountains are purple -

We have wide open spaces

All of us must

Blue and grey,

To the far outback,

Walk hand in hand,

Fear dogs my steps and dims my view,

These are the wonders

These are blessings

To make sure we preserve

The hopes I held with youthful eyes

That are meant to stay.

That others lack.

This - our beloved land.

There are birds, there are animals

If we preserve these natural

And the trees to view,

And wondrous things,

These wondrous things

We will have played our part

Are for me and you.

In what future pleasure it brings.

But life, in it’s relentless way Has woven wisdom’s tapestry Of resignation through the years Though once I fought the facts with tears Though changed in garment, clothed anew

No longer light the wearied skies. Acceptance comes……I sigh of late And label life “God’s will” or “fate.” © Kath Fisher

creative cuts

T

his is an unusual time for us all. And here at the HT we have had many calls about cancellations of events, concerts and shows – which means our Creative Cuts is understandably very sparse. Therefore, we decided to be creative in our response to this.

So, this month, we are focusing on this period of self-isolation as a time to reconnect with things you love, but never usually have time for, or a good time to learn something new, or make changes to your home and garden – or just rest and nurture yourself. Here are some ideas to make self-isolation less of a prison sentence and more of a luxury retreat!

LEARN HOW TO KNIT

MAKE A PHOTO ALBUM/ BACK UP YOUR PHONE PICTURES

Many of us have a computer or hard drive full of photos that we planned to arrange into proper albums ‘one day’. Well, here is the ‘one day’ – although for most of us it will probably take two or three, but also means you can enjoy all the memories your photos bring. If you do it with your family, it could be a mammoth event, where all sorts of family history and funny moments are revealed.

Knitting can be very therapeutic – people say they go into an almost meditative state with the rhythmic action and the gentle ‘click clack’ of the needles. Lessons online include ‘knitting for beginners’ and ‘how to knit’ – just hop on a search engine and you’ll find something in a few seconds.

GAMES!

If ever there was a time for board and card games, it’s now. Monopoly, Cluedo, Articulate, Uno, Bridge, Dominos… Check your local toy shops (like Amazen Puzzles and Games in Montville) and order online or over the phone (5478 5788) to collect from the door. The Little Book Nook in Little Main Street, Palmwoods, is also a place to do a few things in one hit – with novels, Bingo, Origami, activity books and more for you to peruse, or order online and collect at the door (0431 750033). You can grab a much-needed delicious coffee and bite to eat (takeaway only of course) from Homegrown Cafe next door.

LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT

Do you have a guitar or violin, or trumpet, gathering dust in a corner because you’ve had no time to learn or practise? Or are you interested in learning something new? And if that’s not your cup of tea, start singing - it’s brilliant for releasing feel-good endorphins!

PLANT SOME VEGGIES AND FLOWERS

ART AND CRAFTS

Set up the easel and create, paint your wine glasses, make candles, build a fairy garden, paint rocks, crochet, make scrap-wood frames and signs…there are so many ideas, just choose a few to tide you over at this time and grab the supplies if you are able to go out, or order online. Remember, try to order from local businesses first.

“And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. "And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. "And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed."

~Kitty O'Meara

If this virus has taught us anything, it is that we need to be much more sustainable and use our own space and land wisely. Whether that’s creating vegetable beds, planting trees, or adding a climbing veggie garden and herb pots to your patio or kitchen. This is the perfect time of year to get planting! Our local nurseries, such as Forest Heart and Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies are still open, at the time the HT went to press.

DO SOME DIY

Home with the kids? Teach them how to make shelves, or maybe fix something that’s been broken for ages, or give them a lesson on what’s under the bonnet of the car. Use this time to teach them practical, hands-on skills, or hone your own.

Our local nurseries, such as Forest Heart and Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies are still open, at the time the HT went to press.

CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER

Again, now is the time! The cupboard that bulges at the seams with clutter. Those drawers where you chuck pens, paper clips, batteries, and any random thing – sort them out and streamline. Feng Shui experts recommend you keep one clutter drawer, but the rest needs to go! Clearing clutter has been shown to reduce stress and emotional baggage in many people, with those who do it usually saying, “I feel lighter” or “I feel so much better” once it’s done. Just try it with one room if it’s hard at first, and feel the physical and psychological benefits afterwards – you’ll be hooked.

creative cuts BAKE

Cakes, bread, biscuits, pies – the best thing about baking (apart from the end result) is you can totally focus on the activity at hand. Lose yourself in the moment, that feeling of creating something nourishing or decadent, the comforting smells of good food baking in the oven. It will lift your spirits and, if you do it with whoever else may be self-isolating with you, it can be even more enjoyable, creating a fond food memory to look back on.

DIGITAL DINNERS 

So, we can’t get together in large groups for now, but there are various apps which mean you can actually have dinner or coffee with at least six people! Set up your largest available screen with Skype, WhatsApp, Messenger, Facetime or your chosen app, and set a dinner date with some friends. It’s different and could be quite a funny experience!

START A BLOG OR DIARY

For most of us, this is a time we have never experienced before. Physical isolation, but still strong community connection. Quiet streets, but people still busy helping each other behind closed doors or with deliveries. The mood is different. There have been displays of negative and selfish behaviour, but also plenty of positive acts and humour. Record it on the page – your feelings, your observations. It will be something to look back on or share with your family in years to come.

MEDITATE

Learn to meditate, making it a part of your daily routine. Meditation is used to still the mind, relax the body and produce a harmonious inner state. You can meditate while sitting, walking, or practising yoga, or by being fully aware of the moment you are in. There are two basic steps: to focus on a single word or phrase of your choice, or simply to focus on your breath; and to acknowledge and release any thoughts that rise up during this time. By focussing on a single word, thought or image, we produce a state of calm that increases mental alertness, while relaxing other body systems. Make an effort to practise every day, even if it’s initially only for five minutes. You may find it’s easiest to meditate first thing in the morning and last thing at night. So, there you have it – plenty of ideas to keep you going for the next few weeks, if need be. We hope these suggestions inspire you to use this time in a creative, productive and fun way, and we’d love to hear from you if you try some of these.

LEARN A LANGUAGE

Mais, bien sûr! Whether you plan to travel in the years ahead, or just love the sound of a different dialect, learning a language is an exploratory, joyful experience. Not only that, it helps develop strong cognitive skills (and sharpens the ones you have), such as mental flexibility, improved memory, multi-tasking and problem solving.

READ A BOOK

Look after yourselves and each other.

Read a ton of books! Try some classics, which you can really give some dedicated time to now, such as Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, The Catcher in the Rye, Crime and Punishment, 1984, or The Odyssey. Or try something more recent – and support your local book shops when you buy, either in person or online.

EXERCISE / DANCE / YOGA WATCH A FILM

Grab some popcorn and have a few movie nights - you could even set it up under the stars to make it feel extra special! Or snuggle down inside and binge watch a series that you clicked ‘Add to List’ ages ago. Sometimes escaping to another world, time, country or story can be a great release. (And if you watch a film with subtitles, you can start to learn another language too – win-win!) Documentaries are also great to expand the mind, especially ones like Our Planet with Sir David Attenborough, where you can appreciate and marvel over nature and remember how we are just one part of a big whole.

Again, you will find plenty of online lessons, especially now, as many studios are having to close so are choosing to share their classes online instead. Or, just make up your own routine at home, or one for the kids. Maybe use objects around the house for light weights, do laps around the yard, walks through the neighbourhood, have a good dance to music you love. Release those endorphins which make you feel better and help your immune system! (Remember, don’t strain yourself and do anything that makes you uncomfortable – gentle and regular exercise is better when stuck at home.)

Brant & Bernhardt Market Update

"I

n times of economic upheaval and share market crashes, people head for the safety, security and solidity of bricks and mortar,” according to hotspotting.com.au CEO Terry Ryder. The last time Australia faced a major economic crisis was the global financial crisis of 2008. According to property experts during this time, while some were forecasting a real estate crash, house prices in Australian capital cities actually rose 13.6% in 2009 and a further 6% in 2010. According to Terry Ryder – “The evidence so far, including the latest auction clearance rates and price data, indicates that property is hanging tough in the face of the current crisis.” Realestate.com.au is also reporting that the property market is doing “well” with clearance rates high and buyer demand steady. Online

searches are at an all-time high as people look to the relative safety of bricks and mortar. According to Core Logic’s latest figures as at March 2020 our property market on the Sunshine Coast is still remaining strong and still showing positive growth. Why would you not move away from the busy crowds to our little piece of paradise in the Hinterland? Stay safe and well, call Susan or Dee today to organise your tree change.

Managing Stress

honeyeaters and a good source of nectar during the winter. There are even some early wattles in flower.

T

For the revegetation, the branches of Pink Euodia, Melicope elleryana, are covered in clusters of pink flowers that bring the butterflies. Blue Quandongs, Elaeocarpus grandis, have been attracting flocks of lorikeets. There are several species of different sizes in this genus.

here’s no doubt that our lives have changed, and social isolation can be quite stressful. However, one of the best ways to manage stress is, apparently, to take action. What better way to take action than to get out into the garden, or the revegetation areas, admire what has been achieved already and do more planting, further maintenance, and some restructuring if needed.

When we are avoiding unnecessary outings, we might like to try growing some new foods. Look for warrigal greens, Midyim berries, lemon myrtle leaves for a cup of tea or perhaps the edible and slightly spicy blue fruit of Blue Lillipilli, Syzygium oleosum.

Plants can’t catch Covid -19 and the natural environment can be very soothing. The weather is cooling down, soil moisture levels are good and new growth is everywhere. It’s a great time to be enjoying the environment. In the garden why not plant some colourful flowering annuals or shrubs to brighten things up. Natives preferably, and even at this time of year there will be something in flower, but if you can’t find what you want, dahlias aren’t weedy, and the bees love them.

Midyim, Austromyrtus dulcis, can be a sprawling shrub or used as a low hedge. It is best kept pruned to shape and will be covered in due course with small white flowers followed by spicy berries. The birds will compete with you for those.

Banksia integrifolia The pretty little native violets, Viola species, grown as a groundcover or in a pot, are displaying their violet and white flowers, and Coast Banksia, Banksia integrifolia, is a very adaptable small tree much loved by the

Adult butterflies flutter through your garden to search for nectar in flowers (pollinating as they go) and for females to lay their eggs on suitable host plants. Different butterflies require different plants to breed and ensure the caterpillars start life on the right diet. FRANZ LOORS

In the Wild

W

So, let’s help these colourful friends to remain flitting through our gardens and forests, and choose some butterfly-friendly plants.

We can manage this process for our own benefit by planting and working with fast growing plants that provide mulch through their natural leaf fall or through pruning and lopping. You can grow your own mulch and soil improvers, in fact in the long term this is the only solution to creating sustainable and

regenerating soils and reduce dependency on fertilisers and mulches from external sources. Native plants that are great for soil improvement include our native Hibiscus spp, rainforest pioneers like Pipturus, Homalanthus, Macaranga and of course our legumes (who have the bonus ability if adding nitrogen to the soil) such as Acacia spp, Pultenaea spp, Hovea spp, Oxylobium spp, and many more. Diversify your orchard and vegie patch by incorporating these plants into your plantings. These plants, if managed, will provide shade and protection from the intense summer sun, strong winds, provide habitat for pest controlling birds and insects and when pruned – mulch. In the case of the Hibiscus and many of the legumes you also get the added benefit of their beautiful flowers. Managing these plants is a simple as going for a stroll with your secateurs, hand saw or whatever cutting implements strike

your fancy and pruning to the desired shape that provides shade and protection to your food bearing plants and all the prunings are dropped where required to provide an in-situ mulch source, a permaculture term for this is “chop and drop”. Soil-improving plants have been used by traditional subtropical farmers for millennia throughout Melanesia, Polynesia, Africa, SE Asia and the Americas. Permaculturists and forest farmers have adopted these techniques in Australia for many decades, but often using exotic plants from other traditional systems. However, Australia has a great range of plants tried and tested by Indigenous Australians also over the millennia, it’s time for us to catch up and incorporate our native plants, not just into our amenity gardens but into our orchards and vegetable gardens, for both beauty and sustainability. Check out the great range of plants we stock at Forest Heart to grow your own mulch.

Turning A New Leaf

All plants naturally produce mulch as they shed, leaves, stem, bark, branches and eventually themselves as they die and decompose. Plants through their shade, organic matter and their symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi enrich the soil for future generations of plants (and everything else – including ourselves!).

One butterfly we like to celebrate here is the endangered Richmond Birdwing (often seen at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve) whose host plant is the birdwing vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa). Please think about planting this vine to help ensure the survival of this species. Other plants that are useful as food or habitat for butterflies are acacias, banksias, westringias and melaleucas, native sarsaparilla and tuckeroo.

e all know that mulches are great for creating and building soils, but the majority of conventional mulches are ones we have to source from elsewhere. But what if you could grow your own mulch? Sometimes we do grow our own mulch and just throw it away in the bin!

Not wild about cats?

by JAMIE WALKER

 Red-backed Fairy Wren - image Paul Fraser

C

ats make beautiful pets but, in the Australian landscape, like foxes, Lantana and Indian Mynahs, they are aliens. They are also, by their nature, driven, natural hunters – effective, compulsive and indiscriminate.

A native animal like an Antechinus has a litter of only five each year. If you have never heard of an Antechinus, it may be because, where you live, they are all long dead. Second, research has shown that Antechinus, like Bandicoots, are able to live close to people in urban environments. They are small predators and can, if allowed to exist, effectively deal with nests of troublesome mice better than poisons or cats.

Small, native animals and birds are equipped by evolution to cope with the dangers inherent in the Australian ecosystem, but they have no effective response to a predator imported from other continents. The perils posed by cats are not within their inherited memory. Feral cats now have a worse impact on native wildlife than other of the well documented threats across our country. Scientific observation has shown that, on average, each cat will kill seven animals each day, if free to do so. This is a huge contribution to causing 30 mammal species to go extinct since European settlement. They are also guilty of ‘surplus’ killing, i.e. more than they need to eat. Feral cats are all descended from domestic animals, since pets can turn feral at any time. If our cat goes on to someone else’s property and hunts (and it will) then, at that point, it is feral – just as our dog would be in the same circumstance. I know of people who assert that their cat only kills moths, yet I have seen Frogmouths, Water Dragons, Lorikeets and small birds like finches and wrens in feline jaws.

This is a tough subject and the rules governing cat ownership are also tough. We are not allowed to let our cats wander away from our property (so we may have to build a run for them in our backyard). We must have our cats neutered and register them. Penalties do apply if these conditions are not met. Also, and this may seem toughest of all, land owners are permitted to humanely trap cats which wander on to their land. (Cage traps can be loaned from Council). To then recover the animal from the Council pound will incur a considerable financial penalty for the owner. I sympathise with all responsible pet owners. But everything above needs to be stated. When it comes to the choice of a pet, cat ownership in Australia is not eco-friendly and, for some people, it may not even be a viable option.

There is irony in all of this. First, people may believe that cats rid them of rats and mice, but in fact, they only get rid of natives. House mice evolved in Asia where they coped with many species of cats. When she is three months old, a female house mouse can have a litter of six young. Meanwhile, her mother can have two more litters. Predation is thus countered by production of massive numbers. Buff-footed Antechinus - image Rob Kermot 

About That Tree

with Tony Wootton tree surgeon TONY WOOTTON Tree Surgeon is our local arborist and author, meeting the Hinterland's tree needs since 1996

W

HENEVER THERE IS a situation like Covid 19, I think to myself” What would a tree do?”. When a tree is faced with a serious infection it compartmentalises itself and walls off the affected section of itself with a chemical barrier. If the infection or pathogen is particularly virulent and manages to breach the barrier, the tree sets up another barrier further out in a bid to further contain the pathogen, be it viral, bacterial or fungal. If you think of humanity as an organism, it’s like Queensland walling off the border with NSW to prevent the spread of coronavirus, and then if the virus crosses the border, the next step would be to wall off Southern Queensland to protect Northern Queensland. The other point is that when trees exist in a forest, they support each other through a fungal network known as the Soil Food Web. They understand that if one tree dies, even a weak and ailing one, the integrity of the whole forest canopy is compromised. In human terms we have to understand that each of us has a uniquely individual role to play in the rich fabric of our society, and that the healthy need to support the weak, for all our sakes. The next time you look at a tree, consider these marvellous hidden processes, and you may just catch a glimpse of a deeper reality.

QBCC Lic No 1129605 35 APRIL 2020 HINTERLAND TIMES

Many readers tell us they enjoy our monthly Q&A with a local hinterland business, and this month it’s the turn of Derik and Jeanette Reinecke from Oral Art Denture Clinic in Montville.

BIZ QUIZ Q A Q

Where did you grow up? Derik - Kalahari in South Africa Jeanette - North Eastern part of South Africa, a place called Magoebaskloof. What made you move to the hinterland?

We were looking for a cooler climate and love the surroundings. It reminds Jeanette very much of the area where she grew up in South Africa. Jeanette especially likes the misty and rainy weather.

A

Q

How long have you been running Oral Art Denture Clinic? And what did you do before this?

A

Derik established a dental laboratory in South Africa in 1989 and sold it after five years when we emigrated to New Zealand with our two daughters.

He opened another dental laboratory called, Oral Art Dental Ceramics, on the North Shore in Auckland which still exists, and has become one of the largest labs in Auckland. He sold it when he decided to move to Australia 22 years ago. Derik’s third dental laboratory bearing the same name, Oral Art Dental Ceramics, was established on the Gold

Derik and Jeanette Reinecke of Oral Art Denture Clinic in Montville 

Coast in 1998, and he expanded by adding a denture clinic five years ago. He opened the branch, Oral Art Denture Clinic and Dental Ceramics in Montville in October 2019.

Q

What do you enjoy the most about your business?

Meeting the wonderful people in the community and experiencing their joy and satisfaction once their dental needs have been met, gives me so much job satisfaction. Dentures or teeth that cause pain and discomfort or that are not aesthetically pleasing could be the cause of self-consciousness and poor quality of life. It really is heartwarming to be able to help people who experience these problems.

A

It is also a delight to say ‘hi’ and sometimes to have a little chat with passers-by who would just like to know what the business is all about. Even the courier person who works for a pathology company used to pop in to have a little yarn. (He has now recently retired, and we miss his friendly pop ins on Mondays and Fridays when we are up here in Montville). The community here is an absolute delight. It is of course most convenient and beneficial to have the doctors, the pharmacy, the IGA and of course best of all – the waffle shop only a few steps away from the Denture Clinic.

Q A

Life is worth hearing

What does a ‘typical’ day entail for you? Make appointments, order materials, book a courier, and work on existing cases that I have in the laboratory.

I receive crown and bridge work from dentists, so I do liaise with them about the cases that I receive. The latest technology means that I am able to receive patient impressions from the dentist by means of a computerised file. Dentists use intra oral scanners for that purpose and they email the files to me so that I can then go ahead and design the model on the computer, print the model and complete the manufacturing process. When a new denture patient arrives at the clinic, I consult with the patient to establish what his or her needs are. Sometimes it could be a repair on an existing denture or only an adjustment on the denture which causes discomfort. Other times the patient requires a complete new denture or dentures. I then take an impression and organise the next appointment to see the patient. It could take from 3 - 5 visits from start to finish to complete a denture or set of dentures.

Q

If you weren’t running Oral Art Denture Clinic, what would you like to do?

A

I would like to have more time to grow vegetables, have chickens, travel in Australia and overseas, read and go kayaking.

Help is here There are many different organisations and numbers to call, or websites and apps to use, to help people look after their mental health and the mindset of those around them, in particular, children.

The Sunshine Coast Council is also encouraging all residents to look out for their neighbour (#Covidkindness), with their At Home in my Neighbourhood program, which encourages connected neighbourhoods. Similar to many other countries, a free postcard has been developed that can be downloaded from Council’s website. Residents can print out the postcard and pop it in their neighbour’s mailbox using good hand hygiene or screenshot and send it to their neighbours electronically. We have also printed the #CovidKindness cards on our What’s On page and you can cut these out to copy and use. It could be offering to buy some groceries if they’re in social isolation, mowing the lawn, putting the bins out or even just writing down your phone number so they have someone to call if they need to. Council will continue to review operations as the situation evolves, and for information on this program and about other council facilities and services visit: sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. There are people and organisations out there ready to help, so please don’t feel alone – your community is in this with you. Let’s keep on looking out for each other.

Ayurvedic Health Advice To Suit You

A

An Ayurvedic approach to staying balanced during times of turbulence

yurveda uses the theory of doshas to understand the universe and everything in it. Vata governs all movement and circulation, Pitta is responsible for energy and metabolism and Kapha provides all structure and cohesion. Vata dosha is light, dry, changeable and cold by nature. Its principle role in the universe is to govern movement and when out of balance it can lead the other doshas out of place and therefore is the most important to treat.

Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner and teacher of Transcendental Meditation.

With all the changes happening daily and the high levels of anxiety in the collective consciousness we can except to see a rise in the symptoms of out of balanced Vata. Insomnia, anxiety, indecisiveness, forgetfulness, irregularity in digestion and elimination, and feeling like you are running on nervous energy are all signs that Vata is in excess. Vata is pacified by having a regular routine of meals, exercise and

sleep. If the internal cycles are going out of balance we may forgot to eat because we don’t feel hungry but later on feel depleted and weak, likewise the nervous energy generated by all the panic and fear can make us feel that we are not tired and therefore we end up staying up to late and not getting enough sleep. The usual habit of taking a lunch break at a particular time may go by the wayside with people working from home and with all sporting activities and gym closures, the dedicated times for exercise may also slip away. Establishing set times to exercise, eat and go to sleep will help to support the physiology and maintain balanced energy, digestion and overall well being. Favouring warm, nourishing meals and reducing raw, dry, cold food is preferable if Vata is out of balance. If you do start to feel like you are getting a sore throat and possibly the COVID-19 virus, drink hot boiled water. This will help to flush the

virus out of the throat and into the stomach where it will be broken down by the digestive system and away from the throat and lungs. Adding some ginger root to the boiled water will increase the effect. Turmeric is one of the best spices to support immunity and should be taken with good quality oil like ghee, coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil as it is fat soluble. Its effects are enhanced by heating it in oil and can be used in cooking. Putting your attention on positive activities instead of just absorbing all the latest news about the virus will help you to stay calm amidst all the upheaval. By either starting or maintaining an already existing practice of meditation, yoga, walking, gardening or doing something creative, it is possible to ride the waves of change and come out feeling grounded and healthy instead of accumulating more stress as the days go on.

We will get through this

W

ow, 2020 certainly has packed a punch and it’s only March. As always there are people who will make the best of things and those who will move through the same times with great stress and difficulty. It doesn’t help either that there is so much conflicting information that is trying to command our attention from every angle. To make sense of what we are moving through, first I believe we need to step out of the screaming headlines and dramatic reporting. In whatever way works for you come into a more peaceful inner focus, remember that stress is a disruptive energy and does not contribute to your health and wellbeing in any way.

Notice how there is an escalation of dramatic reporting. We need to be informed and this is a dramatic situation we are moving through with tentacles that extend deep into the fabric of our existence.

The suggestions of which vitamins to take fill pages and empty wallets, based on results some vitamins have been shown to help, Vitamin C, good old Cod Liver oil, Vitamin D3, etc.

But we need to balance our thinking and how we surrender our attention.

Stuck at home? Set up a veggie garden, cook up a healthy storm, play with your children, love your partner, love yourself, listen to healing music, do yoga…

There are just as many doctors, scientists and general members of the public reporting wonderful information as there are those who seem to want to create fear rather than to be truly helpful. The amount of individuals who are terrified if they sneeze, the pressure we are putting, by our fear, on hospitals and doctors creates an unwanted burden for those who are working to help us during this time. Follow their advice.

This situation will pass, but life may not be the same, change was inevitable, we have been holding back a Tsunami. We have been too busy to stop, turn off the TV and think. Be kind, don’t put others at risk, explore reality beyond what is presented to you.

And breathe… Is the intensity of information on COVID-19 overwhelming you? Do you feel creeping anxiety or panic inside? You’re not alone! One of the best methods to centre yourself in times of stress is to control your breath, and focus on the moment you are in.

D

r Andrew Weil devised the 4-7-8 method also called ‘relaxing breath’ and recommends practising this twice a day.

On his website (drweil.com), it states: “The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise is utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. Although you can do the exercise in any position, sit with your back straight while learning the exercise. “Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise. You will be exhaling through your mouth around your tongue; try pursing your lips slightly if this seems awkward.” Always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth, and make sure the tip of your tongue stays in position the whole time. Exhalation should take twice as long as inhalation. The amount of time you spend on each phase is not important; but the ratio of 4:7:8 is important.

4-7-8 breathing technique

How to do the 4-7-8 breathing technique • Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. • Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. • Hold your breath for a count of seven. • Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. This is one breath. • Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

Comprehensive denture services direct to the public

REHABILITATION & EXERCISE

If you find it difficult to hold your breath, speed the exercise up but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8 for the three phases. With practice, you can slow it all down and get used to inhaling and exhaling more and more deeply.

Mungo MacCallum

Last week

Now, more than ever, we need to come together as a community, support each other, show kindness and consideration.

L

Council is committed to supporting Queensland Health as the lead agency responsible for responding to COVID-19 and will ensure our community is kept informed.

Well, actually I couldn’t do any of the above even if I wanted to – I am in isolation. But I am not considered ill and I will not be tested. Indeed, I can order cocktails delivered to my door.

ast week I could have my hair styled but I couldn’t get a kidney transplant. I could take my kids to school but not to church. I could invite nine mates to a funeral but only four to a wedding. I could attend a bootcamp, but I could not meet my friends in a park. I was told to vote in local elections if I lived in Queensland but not in New South Wales.

Anyone with health concerns can call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or find up-to-date reliable information on the Queensland Health website.

And I am expected to work. All workers are essential -- until they are not, until Scott Morrison bans or restricts some occupations and the previously essential workers are sent off to join the queues at Centrelink where they will social distance – or not.

To find out the most up-to-date information, follow the dedicated COVID-19 link from the home page of our website.

It was beyond confusion, beyond parody. And when journalists tried to make sense of the chaos, a snarly Morrison slapped them down: any attempt of interrogation was not helpful, verging on unpatriotic, even unAustralian. Shut up and do what you’re told.

#CovidKindness - how you can help

Clearly this situation could not go on, but it did. In his so-called National Cabinet, Morrison bullied the state premiers to yet again postpone the inevitable.

At times like this, it’s essential we support one another and show compassion to those who need it, neighbour to neighbour, street to street.

Well before the end of the week it was clear that the government was reluctantly moving to impose a near total lockdown of the kind already in place in many other countries.

Together we can build a strong community. Council has brought together resources, ideas and information to help you explore new opportunities to become a more connected and supportive neighbourhood - during and after COVID-19. Go to Council’s website to download your #CovidKindness postcard to pop into your neighbour’s mailbox with your phone number and offer of how you can help.

The premiers may have disagreed about the urgency, but all accepted it was going to happen. So did business: any resistance was minimal, the real debate was about who would be compensated and by how much. And the premiers of the biggest states, Liberal Gladys Berejiklian in New South Wales and Daniel Andrews in Victoria have made it clear that they are preparing to move soon, even if Morrison will not. The National Cabinet was supposed to produce national policy, but Morrison is now extolling the idea that state differences are actually a good thing. Talk about making a virtue out of necessity. The schools were spending more effort on home learning than supervising their dwindling numbers in the classrooms: few believed that schools would reopen after the impending holidays. The overall mood was that something close to total lockdown was only a matter of time; we might as well get on with it. But Morrison was determined to string out the phony war for as long as possible, perhaps because he was all too aware that the cost of a lockout will be horrendous, in economic, social, and crucially political terms. Unemployment will soar, certainly to over ten percent with some estimates reaching 15 per cent – two million Australians out of work. This is not just recession – it is getting into serious depression territory and it will not be over in six months, as Morrison previously optimistically predicted. The cost to the Treasury will be enormous in lost tax revenue and increased welfare payments, even without the third and subsequent stimulus packages that will be required. There will be no talk of surpluses in the foreseeable future. But there is no real choice, in spite of Morrison’s insistence that we must act to protect both health and the economy – lock down

Online library services Stuck at home? Access Sunshine Coast Libraries' eLibrary anytime and anywhere, 24/7. Update your technology skills, learn a new language, access quality information and learn how to play a musical instrument. There is so much on offer, which you can access from the comfort of your lounge room. Check out the latest eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, eMusic, eMovies and more.

And the pain will be immense and long-lasting. Very little of this will be Morrison’s fault: the worst he can validly be accused of is procrastination and dithering, and given that those have characterised his time as prime minister, the electorate can hardly claim to be shocked. But his will be the hand that signs the paper, that authorises the lockdown and the misery to follow. He is the officer on watch, and a lot of voters will not forgive him: they will remember the leader’s burden, the buck stops here. Morrison will be remembered as the prime minister who dumped them in the mire, just as the equally innocent Jimmy Scullin was in the Great Depression. ScoMo’s legacy will be far darker than that of Kevin Rudd, who blew the budget to manage the Global Financial Crisis, or Paul Keating, who oversaw the recession we had to have. In time, Morrison may be condoned – he may even win another election, like Keating did in 1993, with the aid of John Hewson’s GST. But he will not be forgotten, and it will not be the epitaph he craves. So he is preparing to spread the blame. For no apparent reason he has convened what he calls the National COVID-19 Coordinatiion Commission to solve problems. It was picked by him alone, mainly consisting of business cronies with a couple of supportive bureaucrats, none of whom have any known expertise in managing a pandemic. Ironically the only one who might have is the token lefty, Greg Combet, who was a minister during Rudd’s bail out in the GFC. But he will be hopelessly outnumbered by the corporate free-enterprise number crunchers. And the greatest irony of all is that the people elected to do the job – the members of the federal parliament – have been sidelined for the duration. Barbers are considered essential, but the MPs are considered redundant in a way they have never been, not during wars, depressions and previous pandemics. Naturally there is resistance, and not just from the Labor Party and its allies. And no reasonable justification for the extraordinary move has been advanced – other parliaments continue to sit around the nation and indeed around the world. There should be outrage, a demand that our representatives are brought back to do their job. But a shell-shocked, confused and frightened populace seems to be copping it as part of the ongoing madness as they are assured by the partisan commentariat that Morrison knows what he is doing -- that unity is vital, we must all stick together and that we should be ready to accept sacrifices in the name of – well, what? Morrison tells us that our health, our immediate physical survival, is not the overwhelming priority; preserving the economy is at least equally important. So like some businesses, democracy must be placed in hibernation for the duration. and just perhaps preserving his political dominance might also have something to do with it. Whatever it takes.

The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
