Cafés, community and creativity

C

AFés PLAY AN important part of my month. sitting in a welcoming environment with a cup of tea or coffee, i find it easy to work, with the gentle buzz of chat and laughter around me. often a conversation will strike up with locals and staff, and i find new ideas and stories regularly come from these moments. this month, my laptop decided it would no longer work unless plugged in, which almost scuppered my café plans… i am therefore grateful to Little May espresso in Montville, and shotgun in Maleny for letting me cheekily use their electricity for a couple of visits until my new battery arrived! i briefly mentioned i was trying Laughter Yoga in last month’s editorial, and the results are in! (see the Health, Wellness and Beauty section for details.) Maleny Lane, where the class was held, is such a cosy and welcoming hub in the centre of town and i am so impressed with their community spirit and willingness to try new ideas. this month we are encouraging that community spirit with Ryan engle’s fundraiser in Maleny, and a crowdfunding campaign for a local couple’s fledgling mushroom business in Montville. the local markets, from Mapleton to Witta, always appreciate your support, as do the artists and performers

who entertain us, from Nambour’s Black Box theatre, to the monthly sunshine Coast spoken Word in Palmwoods. this month, performance poet tug dumbly is the special guest – he is outstanding, and i highly recommend seeing him in action! i hope you like the october cover as much as me, with the whimsical image of Musical director Kim Kirkman and his tower of strings in our beautiful hinterland. His Viva Vivaldi Festival comes to Maleny this month - details in Creative Cuts. our feature stories are varied as ever and Back to Nature talks turning your dam into a wetland habitat, shorebirds, a WiLVos plea, and breakfasting with birds. there’s also Poets’ Corner, two Ht Young Writer of the Year stories, and Travels With… which takes a second stop in syria with Rensina. i’m off for our annual family day at sculpture on the edge, where we enjoy the gardens of spicers tamarind peppered with unique art installations, followed by scones and tea. time flies, and these moments are precious – i wish you precious moments too.

Ryno’s Round Up S

ALLY-ANNe ANd Herby engle are the essence of what a community is built on; honesty, love and integrity. A family who give so much without thought or want for anything in return. Now this family has a hard road in front of them. Ryan engle sadly took ill with meningitis recently and he's currently taking small steps to recovery, but the family have a long journey ahead which will see them face physical and financial battles. Ryan loves all things country - from the music, to the farm, to motorbikes - and he's also a champion sports person, achieving more in his 13 years than most do in a lifetime. So a fundraising music event, ‘Ryno’s Round Up’, has been initiated to help support this family. A family-friendly event filled with community spirit and featuring all that Ryno loves: great music, games, good food and having fun! We're asking the Maleny and general sunshine Coast community of businesses, sporting groups, musicians and vendors to give time to help raise the spirit of a family who never ask but always give. Ryno's Round Up is on october 19, 3-11pm at the Maleny RsL. tickets are $15, available from Nellie's Creative Hair design (the more tickets you buy, the more chances you have to win prizes!) and kids under 15 free. the line-up is fantastic, and includes Nellie Finley, Will day, oh Harlow, steve Miller, Gemma Kirby, Rikki Chaplin, Col Finley and the Round Up Gang, featuring Ryno, diezel Finley and Levi Finley singing some big country hits! there is also a chance to win the Mystery Jackpot Prize, plus an auction with a Woodstock smoker, eskies, vouchers for food, clothing, musical instruments and so much more. Join this fundraiser and make a difference to a wonderful family, who deserve all the support we can give. See you there!

K

Ate tAYLoR LoVes animals – dogs in particular. Working as a locum vet nurse in Palmwoods and other hinterland practices throughout the month, she also works for smartpups three days a week, and became a dog trainer five years ago. “i had been doing vet nursing for 13 years and enjoyed animal behaviour more than physiology, so i began with puppy pre-school classes and from there it was a natural progression,” Kate smiled. Recently, Kenilworth-based Kate had the opportunity to travel with Vets Beyond Borders to Phnom Penh, Cambodia,

where she worked for PAWs, volunteering her vet nursing skills. the experience was one Kate will never forget. “You have to be either a vet nurse or a vet to volunteer with Vets Beyond Borders. they have partnerships in different countries and you put your order of preference,” explained Kate. “Cambodia was somewhere i was very interested in visiting.” the work was immediate and intensive at the vet clinic. “We focussed on de-sexing and rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs, but mainly dogs. We also did school visits, helping educate kids about approaching dogs. “there is some resistance in the community to de-sexing, as there is a feeling that the dogs should have freedom, but with one dog to three Cambodians and rabies being a big problem, it is vital the message gets through.” the Cambodian people seem to care a great deal about animals, and Kate explained that even the street dogs appeared to be owned by people who live in the street. “it’s an amazing place, with amazing people. the city is crowded and congested, but there is no road rage. the Cambodians, who have been through terrible atrocities, act with kindness and patience. they have a siesta between 12 and 2pm, due to their French heritage, so maybe this makes them more relaxed!”

the clinic offers free treatments on Mondays and for the rest of the week, people pay what they can afford. “there is a great honesty system here, Cambodians are very honourable people. some pay with money, others a bag of mangoes, one even repainted the waiting room!” Kate showed me pictures from the trip, and i saw queues of people on scooters with dogs. “PAWs runs a free vaccination clinic, and we would drive for several hours to different communities to do this, which could keep us busy for up to two days,” Kate shared. “People worked out it was easier to create a scooter drive-thru, as more dogs could be vaccinated at a quicker speed.” Another photograph showed a dog in a tiny makeshift wheelchair. “A local high school made this wheelchair, as they are so expensive to buy from the United states. A teacher and the students make the chairs out of cheap, plastic parts. By the end of the week, this dog was running down the street chasing a cat!” laughed Kate. it’s clear this was an incredible experience for Kate, and she shared more photographs of some of the stunning places she visited in her downtime, such as siem Reap with the magnificent Angkor Wat temple. “the work was confronting and hard,” Kate shared. “there were no machines, so i was monitoring anaesthetic with a stethoscope and a watch. it was very testing for my nursing skills, but also very rewarding. “Because of this intense work, my weekends off were a good time to regather and regroup, and i was lucky my apartment had mod cons and a pool in the complex.” Food was something Kate liked to be adventurous with, both on her weekend jaunts and at the clinic itself. “every day, we would roll out the bamboo mats and Cook would bring out traditional food to share, such as crickets, snails, frog legs, chicken broth…” Kate saw the look on my face and laughed. “Most things were cooked in a broth with rice. i enjoyed that every day, and then had a simple meal of fried rice in the evenings.” despite being home for a couple of months now, Kate still has the clinic and the dogs she befriended, treated and trained on her mind. “i’ve been organising some specially made boots for a disabled dog that drags its back feet. A company in ireland makes them, and i’m paying for them to be made and sent over. i was sure there was something i could do to help.” Kate showed me a few more images of her training the Cambodian dogs. “i trained Roxy to be an ambassador dog, to show tricks and teach people how to safely approach a dog. “i had to learn the language to train the dogs, and i taught them the basics – sit, come when called, lie and wait, shake hands, high fives. some of these trained dogs have now been adopted,” Kate smiled. “it’s news like this that makes it all worthwhile.” Vets Beyond Borders is an Australian-based, not-for-profit, incorporated organisation established by veterinary volunteers in 2003. Vets Beyond Borders co-ordinates and runs veterinarybased animal welfare and public health programmes in developing communities of the Asia and Pacific region. PRINCIPAL LAWYER

CHANGING YOUR NAME When you are born, and in this instance say in the State of Queensland, your name is registered with the RegistrarGeneral of Births, Deaths and Marriages and this is then considered your legal name. However there are occasions when a person wants to change their name. Although a person can use another name informally simply by just adopting another name this is not recognized as changing the name legally as the name change has not been registered pursuant to the act that governs this area, namely the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 2003 (Qld) (“the Act”). To formally register a change of name, an application in the relevant form needs to be completed and submitted to the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages. As an adult this is a relatively simple process of completing the relevant Form 4 (or Form 5 in some specific circumstances), providing three forms of appropriate identification and photo ID as well as paying the relatively modest filing fee. People are generally entitled to change their name to any name they wish and as many times as they wish however with the following limitations: • The new name must not be used with the intention of defrauding another person; • The new name must not be considered offensive; • There is only one name change in any one 12 month period. Changing a child’s first names can only be done once before the child turns one and then a second time but for one occasion only between the age of one and 18 (before the child turns 18). If the child is over the age of 12 then the child’s consent to the name change must also be obtained and noted. If only one parent is requesting the child’s name change then the court’s approval may also be required. The Act will even allow an adult who is not married to make an application to note that person’s “sexual reassignment” – or change of gender - as long as the application is accompanied by two statutory declarations from doctors verifying that the surgery occurred. The old system for formal name change of using deed poll was an expensive and time consuming process requiring the person to obtain approval for the name change from the Supreme Court. This is no longer necessary with the Act providing a process for name change which is vastly improved making it relatively easy, quick and cheap.

Writer Gay Liddington met David Woolston 20 years ago when new to Maleny and seeking a mechanic. Over the years they’ve bantered about cars and family. However, it wasn’t until his recent departure from business, the Auto Range Centre, and subsequently, this interview, that she discovered the layers that maketh the man.

the youngest, with three siblings, david was born in 1963. He grew up in Aspley on the north side of Brisbane, a carefree childhood. i fancied david followed in his father’s footsteps when taking up the wrench but was sidelined by the response: “dad was an optometrist. He had an interest in anthropology which began in the 1930s and continued for the rest of his life. He was highly regarded as an authority, in particular, North Queensland Aborigines.” in 1969, Frank Woolston along with artists, Percy trezise, Ray Crooke and dick Roughsey, undertook a research mission to Cape York. it is obvious that david’s father had a great impact on his life as he recounts the stories with pride. “they went on adventures in search of cave paintings and also looked for the Hell’s Gate Pass which was the shortcut to the Palmer River Goldfields.” Blended with anthropological adventures and fascinating visitors, david continued his formal education. “i finished Grade 10 in Brisbane but during that year, an

opportunity arose to do a mechanical apprenticeship in Maleny. Mum and dad brought me up on saturdays so i could try it out and the owner, George Moffatt, could check me out. “i moved here before Mum and dad and lived at Maleny Guest House near Watson’s Garage, for $25 a week board. “i was 16 and had to fend for myself including meals. everything was cooked in a sunbeam Frypan. A hunk of meat every night and, when you chuck in the frozen peas, make sure you put the lid on because i found out it’s like popping corn.” david likened his introduction to Maleny in 1978 to the eagles song, New Kid in Town. “i wasn’t a local, so early in the piece when my boss wasn’t watching, i had a visit from a couple of fellas who told me to stay away from their girlfriends or watch out!” Wilson’s Garage, later known as Koala Maleny, is now the Marketplace café in Maple street. david recounts working for George Moffatt. “George was a pretty hard task master. We’d fix anything from wheelchairs to bulldozers. it was a typical country garage where you had to be able to repair anything, not just replace parts like we do these days. “i worked three years then completed the fourth at a toyota dealership in Brisbane. i learnt a different set of skills but really missed Maleny. At the end of my apprenticeship, i came back, started doing mechanical repairs from a shed in Coral street and fixed cars for $10 an hour. it was 1982.” three years later at the age of 22, david’s life took a downturn. He finished the day’s work and drove his Corolla into the street where a drunk driver’s F100 hit david’s vehicle head on. He recalls the accident: “injuries led me to close up shop, sell my equipment and convalesce at Mum and dad’s place. it was back in the days when you didn’t have income protection or insurance. the payout took years to sort out.” A couple of years healing and repairing cars from the backyard, david began again.

“the shed was the first built in Lawyer street. it was November 1990 when i moved in and rented. eventually, i was given an opportunity to buy the place, which i did.” during my association with david, i heard he played drums in a band. My mechanic? Really? Another layer to explore. “When i was a teenager, i met a couple of guys who played and we thought it a good idea to get a band together. “drumming gave me a hobby separate from cars. the guy i played with as a teenager, guitarist dan McNamara, he and i still play together. We have a band, My Cat Nellie, and love doing local gigs. our thing is playing classic rock from the ‘60s and ‘70s - a good melody and great guitar riff. dan’s cousin Kate became david’s wife in 2003 and the two created a blended family. “Kate helped me with the business. i couldn’t have done it without her. she’s a people person with the bubbly personality and i’m the quiet, reserved guy. it works.” Aware they are the proud owners of a 1955 split screen Kombi and david, like his dad, was a Holden man, i enquired. “Kate always had a passion for old Kombis. to me, air cooled Volkswagens were evil. i didn’t want to be part of it but the split screen Kombi is a classic. i like the idea of a challenge and so, we bought it. the restoration process took several years. “it’s a stunning car. Kate has made it her business interest while i stay in the background and keep the car on the road. ‘Lovedubs’ is hired for weddings and functions.” departure from business presented david with an opportunity to continue restoring classic cars and

motorbikes. He mentioned his 1970 VF Valiant Coupe which signified the beginning of a collection of Valiants and adds: “Anything with a chrome bumper, not plastic!” A down-to-earth, quiet achiever, david Woolston cites a significant aspect of his ‘retirement’. “We still have two teenagers at home. And now, i get to drive them to school and have conversations which i was never able to do. And to be here on school holidays, just to be around. that’s what’s important.”

AVe YoU seeN tHeM? Pieces of tiny art, easy to miss. Pieces so little you must open your eyes and really look about you to find one. From a bright red ladybug glistening in the sun, to a frog in a tree so hidden you only spot it out of the corner of your eye. the next time you are out and about, if you really look you just might find a painted rock from the group, ‘sunshine Coast Rocks’, founded by local mum Kathleen Halliday. As Kathleen shares her story you are immediately drawn to her warm smile and generous nature. You can see why this tiny art movement is such a beautiful and heartfelt one as her face lights up as she talks. “i thought it was something we could all do as a family and even a great way to meet new people in the

community,” she said. “i think i even look forward to it more than the kids!” And it all started with just a bag of smooth rocks. “When i moved to the sunshine Coast in 2017 i had a bag of rocks that i didn’t know what to do with, and my daughter loved painting at the time so i thought, ‘let’s start painting these rocks’. “My daughter then went down to the park one day and put some rocks there and some children started playing with them. i thought it would be lovely to put rocks around the sunshine Coast and hinterland.” the group has just hit around 470 members and is growing every week as more people find the stones and

become enchanted by the whole idea. “it’s lovely to hear about the outings and the things families have done to go out and look for these rocks. the fact that they get out to do some exploring and have family time together is just wonderful.” Around the base and in the hollows and branches of trees has proven to be one of the most popular spots to find one she has found. Places like the botanical gardens, libraries and parks are always good spots to look, she said. the rocks sometimes even have their own tales as they get around too. “sometimes you even re-find one your family has painted,” Kathleen laughed happily, “we found the same rock we had painted

and hidden but in a totally different location, which was funny and great to see. it shows they actually get around and families are often rehiding them!” Kathleen said painting the rocks gives you such a beautiful hobby in your life, “it’s so calming to just sit and relax and paint rocks. it’s nice to give to someone else and not expect anything back.” sunshine Coast artist Jill Valliere also loves the rock movement and puts her special rock pieces out there for lucky people to find. Her exquisite stone artwork includes story stones, mandalas, birth stones and intuitive art, and is so beautiful she also sells them and shares images through her Facebook page, ‘Art from the heart by Jill’. it would be a lucky day indeed if you were to find one of hers. Jill and her family became involved after finding a painted stone from the sunshine Coast all the way in Brisbane and now she and her boys love to go out there and hide the rocks. For those who don’t think they have the skills, Jill is the first to say you don’t have to be a professional artist to get involved. “it is not about how talented you are; it is about having fun and the nice little things you can do to connect with your children. i definitely think it brings out the artistic talents in a lot of people,” she said. “For me, art is my special time and something i do to fill my cup up. i know it would be like that for a lot of mums too. it’s something i do when the kids are in bed, i sit down, and i paint.” Jill encourages those new to painting rocks to head to Pinterest for inspiration, she also highly recommends people use paint pens like the ones by ‘Posca’ or acrylic paints. “i find the pens easier to use, they do cost a little more but investing in good quality paints really helps. i often put a white base underneath to really make the colour pop and i use a good clear sealer on top.” Jill recommends using a sealer like ‘dura max’ by dulux in a semi-gloss spray but says there are quite a few types you can use and to ask at your local paint or hardware store. “it’s about having a go and keeping at it,” said Jill. “Really it is just practise, practise, practise. What i did a year ago compared to what i do now, you wouldn’t even think it was the same person. You just get better with practise.” But Jill also says not to let your artistic skills, or lack thereof hold you back either, “it is all about having fun at the end of the day,” she smiled. And it is an interactive art experience we can all enjoy; i know for myself, i have two girls eager to hunt rocks and have a go, get out the paints and release some painted treasures of their own into our hinterland!

MEDIAN PRICES… MISLEADING IN THE HINTERLAND From time to time you will hear about changes in the property values and median price in your suburb. Take care not to confuse median sale prices and average sale prices, the two numbers can vary enormously! Averaging adds up property prices in a list and divides by the number of properties. The !"#$%& '(#)!& #*& +,!& -./(!& #%& +,!& #""0!& of a range of properties arranged from lowest to highest. So, if you have 11 properties, the median price would be the price of the 6th property from lowest to highest. There 1#00& 2!& -3!& '(4'!(+#!*& 2!041& #+& #%& 3$0/!& $%"&-3!&'(4'!(+#!*&$243!&#+&#%&3$0/!5 Median and average prices can be quite similar if the prices form an even range from high to low. However, if the list of 11 properties has eight low priced and only three high priced properties, the median value will look low compared to the average value. Conversely, with three low priced and eight high price properties, the median value will be higher than the average value. Median prices in city suburbs with lots of sales of similar type properties are usually quite accurate and useful. The 6#%+!(0$%"& #*& 3!(7& "#8!(!%+& 1#+,& 9$(& 0!**& sales and selling prices ranging from $400,000 to $4million! While median prices can assist as broad indicators and allow comparisons between cities, looking at recent )4 '$($20!& '(4'!(+7& *$0!*& #%& *'!)#-)& areas will always give the clearest understanding of the property market in your suburb. You are most welcome to give our agency a call to see how your property compares in the current market. We look forward to assisting you with any real estate matters.

Goalie with

goals Fourteen-year-old Sam Lapsley from Maleny has made five Queensland hockey teams for the last three years running and is working towards a place in an Australian team - it’s safe to say hockey is his passion.

by Jacqui Hensel

H

oCKeY is oNe oF Australia’s most successful team sports at the olympics, and sam Lapsley was inspired to take up the game at just seven by his mum Fiona, who plays hockey herself in the social league. since then he has discovered he is a goalkeeper at heart. “Being goalie means you have the best view of the game. so you don’t just stop goals, you are also directing the other players,” sam says. “i enjoy the responsibility of my position and the teammates i have in each squad i play for. i think hockey has made me a more confident person.” the goalkeeper must be agile and quick to stop balls that can be travelling over 100km/h. in some top level games the ball has been clocked at 180km/h - but this doesn’t phase sam, who seems to live and breathe the game. “Hockey is a second family to me. My family and i spend every saturday at hockey. For me, i like knowing that i can

go to anyone there for help or advice. there is a lot of trust and support for me there.” it also appears to be a family affair. “Both my brother and i umpire lower grade games, then i play for my team, and volunteer in the canteen. My brother and i play a late game for the men’s team, where i am learning a lot,” sam explains. “the shots are harder and faster and take more skill. it's a way of developing my game further and more of a challenge for me,” sam says thoughtfully. Hockey is an ancient game that was played in the past by several civilisations such as the egyptians and Aztecs, but the modern version of hockey was developed at schools like eton in england, making its first appearance at the olympics in 1908. Women’s hockey, although played since

1927, only made its olympic debut in 1980 at Moscow. Hockey has given sam and his family the chance to see Australia, which he enjoys. As travelling for hockey has become the family holiday, mum Fiona uses it as an excuse to see things that are off the beaten track. sam remembers visiting the old Fremantle Gaol in Western Australia as a particular highlight of these trips. “i have been to every state in Australia except Victoria and the Northern territory,” sam says proudly. “When we go to different tournaments we usually get a couple of days where we can go and see what’s there, which is pretty good. “We drove down to Goulbourn one year and it was a massive trip. We saw lots of the big things, like the Big Ram. Mum always tries to get something more out of the trips,” smiles sam, “there are always things to see and do.” Playing for the Nambour Blue demons in the Junior one

He is also aiming to be a part of the under 18s Queensland team in 2020, which will offer an opportunity at an Australian team placing. Both opportunities will lead to international competitions and yet another step up for sam. if sam is placed in an Australian side, the international Hockey FiH Pro League will be held in Auckland and Christchurch in January 2020. the games run until ANZAC day with international men’s and women’s teams taking part. Australia has a strong history of success in international hockey, and sam will need to work hard to make it into the Australian side, but his grit and quiet determination will certainly stand him in good stead.

Brand New Clinic Opening Day Tuesday 8th October! division, sam is kept busy with training and team commitments. “i go to training with my team twice a week, plus i have a High Performance goalkeeper training session at Ballinger Park one day a week. “i’ve been squad training for the sunshine Coast under 15s team that is competing at Warwick during october. And i do a personal training session once a week with Kurt Pennington from KFP Fitness,” says sam. this busy young man has also attended training sessions with the Queensland Blades hockey team. Making this squad means an increase in intensity for sam as he will be one of the younger members and will be playing a much more advanced and structured game, as the umpiring and rules are tightened up in this age group. sam sees it as another chance to step up to a challenge. “it will be great to play at this level. i have a lot to learn yet,” sam says humbly. Next year sam will have an opportunity to qualify for an Australian team if he makes the under 16s school boy side. The Queensland Gold 2019 U15 boys, with Sam in the middle row - Narellan NSW

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has launched a food pantry (outdoor) based on the Wurtulla pantry. Maleny community member Andy Pether was inspired by the idea and approached Centre Coordinator Nooreen Harris about building one for Maleny. Andy and some friends donated the 100-year-old timber, built and installed the food pantry. The pantry is for people that may require food during hours the Centre is closed, such as weekends. The MNC is sure the Maleny community will ensure the pantry is not looted and only used as needed, hence the signs "Take what you need, give what you can". Donations have been generous already and MNC volunteers will monitor the use of the pantry and refill when necessary.

Bring out the Barrel F

oLLoWiNG exteNsiVe refurbishment, the Barrel at Clouds Vineyard Maleny is open for business and welcoming patrons, albeit in 'soft opening' mode. A selection of south east Queensland wines from Granite Ridge, Whisky Gully, Casley Mount Hutton and Kominos wineries, as well as craft beers from Copperhead Brewery in Cooroy are on offer. Greg Guilford, Manager of Food, Beverage and events at Clouds, said, “the Barrel also serves shared grazing platters and boards including a Ploughman's Lunch and Chef's Choice special, with a wider menu to be developed.”

Patrons of the Barrel are also invited to order from the menu of neighbouring Clouds Vineyard Cafe which opened on the same site on Landsborough-Maleny Road in April. the iconic property shaped like a giant wine barrel was formerly the site of Maleny Mountain Wines. the Barrel is open five days a week, from thursday to Monday 10am to 4pm. so, what can you expect from this striking building? “Among the many tap and bottle beers on offer from Copperhead Brewery is 'dark Cloud', a stout brewed exclusively for Clouds,” explained Greg.

Hi nterla nd Time s Youn g Writer of the Yea r 20 19 Run ner Up

All in your head By Lydia Keet, aged 15

“H

eRe’s YoUR cup of tea, Mella!â€? sophie announces cheerfully, setting a miniscule pink teacup, filled with what appears to be muddy water, before me. i stare at it in horror and disgust, then swiftly replace my expression with a false smile that would make even the fakest Hollywood actress cringe. “oh, sophie!â€? i trill happily. “this looks‌ interesting.â€? Interesting, i remind myself, can have many meanings though, can’t it? i realise that sophie is staring expectantly at me. Not wanting to disappoint, i seize the teacup, raise it to my lips, and try not to gag as i pretend to sip from it. sophie squeals with laughter as i make a show of extending my pinkie finger and batting my eyelashes, slurping from the cup of weak mud. Mission accomplished, Melanie, i congratulate myself. sophie’s feelings have not been hurt. sometimes it’s hard being an imaginary Friend to a six-year-old girl. okay, all the time. the hours are long and hard, and the pay is non-existent. the BiF (Bureau of imaginary Friends, nicknamed ‘the Agency’) assigns you to a child when they’re born,

and you gotta hope you get stuck with a kid with imagination, otherwise it gets boring pretty quickly.

her age, so it’s not that bad. she’s kind and always cheerful, and she throws a mean tea party.

i have to work all day, and all through the night, too. see, all sophie has to do is think of me, and automatically, i’m snatched from whatever i was doing before and transported to wherever sophie was when she summoned me.

However, as a child matures, their imagination abilities tend to diminish. Usually, once our assigned kid turns ten, it’s all over. they’re all grown up. they don’t believe in us imaginary Friends anymore. so what becomes of us? Well, we simply‌fade away. We cease to exist.

My duties include attending tea parties, accompanying her to school, and spending hours raiding the dress-up box to play princesses, to name only a few. the Agency also teams up with the dsA (department of stuffed Animals) from time to time, so when the need arises, i’ll find myself joining forces with Mr Cuddles (sophie’s teddy bear; little does she know, his code name is the terminator), battling the monsters under sophie’s bed late into the night. Basically, we’re required to live with the kid we’re assigned to. When they aren’t thinking about us, we take up residence in the part of their brain that controls their imagination. so, as i said before, you want to end up with a child who has an adequate sense of creativity. the more vivid the imagination, the stronger we become. i’ve looked after sophie for six years now, and her imagination is surprisingly decent for a kid of

sophie only has four years left until she turns ten. so i’ll try to enjoy every last moment i have with sophie, every last moment i have left of my life. But fading away is an unfortunate facet of an imaginary Friend’s short life. We don’t like to talk about it, though. it’s bedtime for sophie now. i’ve spent about an hour re-enacting her favourite scenes from The Faraway Tree as her mother reads it to her. i wonder what sophie’s mother’s imaginary Friend was like? But all too soon, story-time is over, and sophie’s mother leaves the room, turning on the night-light as she exits. sophie’s eyes flicker shut as she drifts off to sleep. Underneath her bed, the monster stirs. Mr Cuddles glances over at me, and i respond with a determined grin. “It’s clobberin’ time.

NAMBoUR FAMiLY’s vision to create an intimate, listening concert venue in the heart of the sunshine Coast led to the creation of sunday Folk four years ago. the venture began with a sunshine Coast Council grant from the Regional Arts development Fund to find out whether the idea was sustainable. “Four years and over 15 concerts later we definitely

know that it is,” said founder Karen Law. “What started as a test run really has grown into a much-loved event bringing people together from all over the coast to enjoy some of the world’s best folk musicians.” Now fully self-funded and running at the iconic Black Box theatre in Nambour, part of the old Ambulance station precinct, sunday Folk puts on three or four shows every year. they are usually on a

Musicians from around the country and even the world make the show part of their tours, joining local musicians for this showcase event. “the idea was to provide a listening audience for some of our local songwriters who otherwise spend a lot of time playing to people eating in cafes,” Karen explained. “there is such a wealth of talent on the coast but not always the best environment to hear it.” Combining local talent with better known, established folk artists like enda Kenny, Cloudstreet and scott Cook has proven a winning formula. “i always open the show with a short set, either as a duo with my son Murray or sometimes as a full family band,” Karen said. “it has been such a great experience learning how to host an event like sunday Folk and watching it grow. We see it as good for folk music and also good for Nambour where we live. it’s great to be able to give back to both.” the next concert is with Canada’s scott Cook and the she’ll Be Rights (with support from Liz Frencham) on Friday october 11, 7.30pm. tickets $18/$14 available from trybooking or on the door for $20/$15 unless sold out.

Currently, each month, HT shares a profile from an ACI member, and October’s mixed-media artist is Jennifer Eurell.

“I

HAVe PRoBABLY always dabbled around in art. it is an enjoyable pastime which just follows along wherever life takes me. As a child i would tell people that i was going to be an artist when i grew up. i probably didn’t really believe it, but that is what i have become.” Jennifer is known as a mixed-media artist, who began drawing and painting “seriously” in the 1980s, when she joined the Central Queensland Contemporary Artists in Rockhampton. “My husband, John, and i set off to sail the world in our yacht Burramys in the 1990s, so my art changed to travel sketches” Jennifer shared. “13 years later we settled down again so i enrolled in CQtAFe and my work became that of a printmaker.” Jennifer moved to Mapleton a few years ago and three things happened. “i finished my art degree; i bought a printing press; and bravely opened my studio to the public

Below: Le Corset linocut

through Art Connect inc.’s open studios program. “i am currently working with etchings, lino prints, cyanotype, embroidered and digitally altered photographs, artist books and the occasional painting.” Predominantly, Jennifer’s work revolves around the environment, and she is not averse to a quiet bit of protest art. “i do like repetition, patterns and somewhat decorative art, and my other focus is clothing and garment construction where i feel my dressmaker mother is still peering over my shoulder.” Jennifer currently has a variety of work in the Collaborations exhibition at the Matthew Flinders Gallery, at the Bribie island Community Arts Centre, and is preparing works for two Maleny Printmakers exhibitions later in the year – Feathers of the Forest at Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve and the lovable Collectables 2019 at Maleny. Maleny Flexi School: 20 Years Later

Feedback for HT

Congratulations to the Maleny Flexi school for passing another important milestone. the history of “FLx” is complex, challenging, elating and a tribute to the staff who provide an individualised curriculum and to the students who do not give up.

i just wanted to let you know i found the Hinterland times Young Writer of the Year Competition to be an enjoyable experience that helped me to develop my skills as a writer when it came to writing with a set theme: 'A day in the Life of'. i will definitely be entering this competition again next year!

the “thinking outside the box” was initiated by a small group of parents and Maleny High school personnel and was closely monitored in a supportive way by then Regional director Rob McAlpine. Before settling into the current premises at the Neighbourhood Centre, students gathered for lessons under trees, in small spaces under the RsL, the scout Hall, the Community Centre, the old Butter Factory and in garages.

Inspiring kids

some naysayers comment that they should be in school getting an education, but standing up for your beliefs and calling for democracy is a fine way to educate yourself in the practice of ethics, moral fibre and research. i am aware most schools spend the last day of term doing ‘fun’ stuff with the kids anyway, so these young people decided to stand up for their planet and their future, rather than have a day a rewards, games and fun at school which speaks volumes.

Praise for poem

Please pass on my praise to her. thank you.

i'm writing to extend my appreciation and thanks to all the hinterland students who took the time to attend the recent Climate strike. it was heartening to see people of all ages down at Cotton tree, especially the wonderful younger generations.

As for the attention-grabbing Youth Festival theme, if Maleny Flexi school responds to the unpredictability of living, mixing uncertainty with hope and positivity, replacing obstacles with opportunities and demonstrating that “one size does not fit all”, it’s doing a pretty good job.

Michael Benson, Palmwoods

Lucy Macdonald’s poem Life as a Tree in the september edition of Ht is wonderfully composed, with beautiful imagery.

Lydia Keet

At the risk of omission, i highlight the work of david Nancarrow (original teacher), teachers Brad owens and John Mays, supported by Nell Hayward, Carol Ferriday, school Chaplains and current co-ordinator Jo Rickards. All the staff and volunteers have made a huge difference.

i only hope the millions of voices around the world are heard, and more positive action is taken to reduce our damaging impact on the natural world.

Warwick Nash

Evocative writing i am really enjoying the monthly contributions from the winner and runners up of the Ht Young Writers Award what talented writers they are. The Frost in september’s edition is outstanding to me. so vivid and raw - i wondered if Catie davis has any firsthand experience of the droughts affecting these farmers? if not, she paints a very accurate picture. Well done. Liz Cattley, Nambour

The Mountains

Dark clouds brood above the hills. A drum roll evokes the cry, “Better get the washing in.” And then, “Tell the children to come inside.”

Follow me to the forest mountains Far away I will be there Watching over you my child Because I tenderly care

A voice from the radio issues a warning: “A severe storm with gale-force winds and hail is expected to reach the Sunshine Coast Hinterland within the next half-hour. We repeat, a severe storm warning is issued for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Expect gale-force winds and hail within the next half-hour.” My washing isn’t Omo Bright, my kids won’t stay asleep at night. I’m overweight, I hate my hair, my clothes are worn, no glamour there! The bills are always somehow paid but there’s never any left to save. The house is blessed with persistent dust and creeping toys that feel they must fill every room without a rest. I try, I do, and I try my best But I never seem to get jobs DONE!! They keep on rising with the sun. Three children battle night and day demand attention right away. My friend has gained her B.S.C. but all I’ve got is M.A.D.! Hubbies in love with the T.V. set “Uh huh” and grunt is all I get. Whatever became of being in love? I guess the years gave that the shove. Angry clouds do a threatening war-dance while the mortar bombardment gathers pace on the south-western front and the dog cringes underneath the stairs. “You’d better close the windows.”

Follow me to the wind-swept mountains In the gales I will hold you in My arms Steadying your fragile fall Whispering my sweet psalms Follow me to the snow-capped mountains High above I will see you through A lone and weary traveller Taking small cold steps too Follow me to the desert mountains In the wilderness I will wait for you With your deepest pains and hurts The sorrows and tears too

Bright sunlight banished, the world turns ashen grey, then bilious yellow, before an eerie green takes over. “Turn the computer off.” “Unplug the stereo.”

Julie Walters plays the strong, struggling Glaswegian mother of aspiring country-and-western singer Rose-Lynn Harlan, in an uplifting story that critics have pronounced much more than a performance of country and western songs. since the age of 14 Rose-Lynn (played and sung brilliantly by Jessie Buckley) has been front woman for the house band of Glasgow’s version of Grand ole oprey, dreaming of following dolly Parton to Nashville tennessee. As an ex-con, estranged from her two children, she takes on daily cleaning to retrieve survival, identity and family relationships in this quirky, positive story with universal appeal. october 19, Maleny Film society, Maleny Community Centre, tickets at the door, 6pm for optional sit-down dinner, movie starts at 7.15pm.

An Unexpected Love

An Unexpected Love is a romantic comedy of an unexpected kind: Marcos and Ana (Ricardo darin and Mercedes Moran) are a married couple in their 60s who are facing life’s big questions rather than mere love troubles. director Juan Vera has created a romcom about new beginnings, exploring with humour the way the couple works through questions about their lives and their marriage after their adult son flies the nest for university in spain. An Unexpected Love has been a great success on its home ground of Argentina, where it was the second biggest selling home-grown film of 2018. November 2, Maleny Film society, Maleny Community Centre, tickets at the door, 6pm for optional sit-down dinner, movie starts 7.15pm.

the eudlo Music Nights festival is on october 12 and 13, and it’s time to let your hair down, dance and camp overnight rather than worry about a late night drive home. the expansive five-acre grounds of Wominjeka Park in eudlo provide just the venue for this. it will run from 12pm saturday to 2pm sunday and costs $35 an adult ticket, along with family tickets and concessions. the outstanding artists include Cigany Weaver, Cloudstreet, Red Crow, tin star, dave orr Band and many more. there are two stages, and a workshop shed with a songwriters concert, open mics and acoustic jams, along with choir, guitar and ukulele workshops. Further info at eudlomusicnights.com.au.

Outspoken returns outspoken is pleased to be able to welcome Clare Bowditch to Maleny as part of her ‘speaking Frankly’ tour. she’ll be talking about her memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl. Long before Clare Bowditch was a singersongwriter touring with the likes of Leonard Cohen she was a young woman working in a call centre in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, still far too afraid to declare her dreams. A brilliant Jeff Buckley concert and a terrible breakup changed all of that. Clare quit her job, packed her backpack, grabbed her guitar, and headed to London to test her fate… Maleny Community Centre, Wednesday November 6, 6.30pm, tickets $22, students $15, outspokenmaleny.com

ALeNY is JUst one pearl on the string of the Hinterland necklace, it is also known as the Heart of the Hinterland, and for good reason too. Maleny sees such a unique mix of cultures, interests, ages and ideas - people coming together building relationships. strong links within a community are vital as, alone we can do so little but together we can do so much! Research has shown that contributing to a society, and the positive feelings associated with giving back, are just as important as overall health and wellbeing. Brant & Bernhardt Property have recently had the pleasure of attending and donating to the Maleny Chaplaincy Fundraising

dinner. this cause is so worthy, with our Chaplains providing our children with much support and guidance, they really are invaluable. We also attended the ‘Lions’ Welcome to Maleny dinner last Wednesday. A fantastic evening was had by all, a great chance to come out and show community spirit whilst welcoming our newcomers. Community involvement, support and a sense of belonging are paramount to being a local resident, as both susan and dee are. “it’s a joy to share our passion for the area with others.” After all, ‘the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members’.

In the Wild

with Spencer Shaw

Fauna Carnage

W

HAt is tHe Most under-rated threat to Australia’s native wildlife? sure, we know about foxes, cats, wild dogs, weeds, habitat fragmentation and even climate change ... the list goes on and on, but a serious threat that we don’t consider for the significant threat that it is, is ourselves in a vehicle! Just in the last month, 100’s of possums, bandicoots, wallabies and many more of our native wildlife’s lives have been cut short on the roads around the range, as our speedy convenience of getting from A to B meets the more easy going pace that the rest of nature follows, with often messy results... Fortunately (not sure if that’s the right word) this level of carnage seems to only occur for a short period every year. Perhaps it’s because there’s tastier grass to be found on the roadside (late winter), perhaps it’s mating season and animals are travelling further and crossing more roads, perhaps it’s down to us driving a bit crazier in spring! A bit of speculation perhaps, but either way the result appears to be an increased death toll, as the weather warms up. the problem for the driver like yourself is that the wildlife can appear to want to be hit... there you are, minding your

own business, zooming along a picturesque country road and see a wallaby crossing the road, you may slow down a bit, but accelerate again as it jumps to leave the road. However at the last minute the wallaby hooks back across in front of you and hey presto, there’s a dint in your bumper and a dying wallaby on the road. Why? Put simply the dodge, weave and back track technique has worked well for the wallaby in evading predators for millions of years of evolution and worked perfectly fine against dingo (and before that the thylacine), however the speed , size and weight of our vehicles is something wild animals have little or no defence against. the only way we can try and reduced the road carnage is through your awareness of where there may be wild animals on the roadside and also that they may irrationally jump out in front of you! i know there are some special individuals who swerve to hit animals on purpose, but for the rest of us, if we drive according to conditions and reduce our speed in bushland areas, we can try and reduce the road toll. However if you do hit an animal and it requires medical assistance, contact the Australia Zoo wildlife Hospital 1300 369 652.

Weather Matters

S

ePteMBeR WAs oFF to a shocking start with dust (topsoil) from south Australia landing on our doorsteps plus the appalling fires that destroyed homes but also wiped out very extensive areas of bush and grassland. Coastal populations are no doubt much more aware of our drying and warming climate than might have been the case even only a year ago. We are learning that rainforest vegetation can also dry out and burn, as happened last year around eungella west of Mackay and happened so recently in the Border Ranges behind the Gold Coast. this knowledge will affect how we manage our own properties and select tubestock for future planting. Although we are experiencing unusually hot spring weather, it’s a reasonable time to consider removing problem patches of lantana while planting is out of the question. if mulch is available, protect the exposed soil to conserve moisture and reduce wind erosion, and if we do get rain, water erosion from impact or run-off.

Bandicoots are out in force searching for any patches of damp soil containing worms, insect larvae and edible plant material. they are omnivores with a varied diet. the effect of that in the revegetation is that any small, unprotected plant surrounded with mulch is likely to be dug out and cast aside in the search for food. sometimes, horizontal chicken wire

secured around the base of the plant is about the only deterrent! Well established plants put in last wet season seem to have put their roots down far enough to survive the present weather, and the bandicoots. they are even putting on spring growth. the natural world can show remarkable resilience so long as there is sufficient moisture retained in the soil. some mature trees will be lost to natural thinning of the planted forest, usually related to available soil moisture, but that’s the way nature works. We have been fortunate so far in the Hinterland but need to remain vigilant to the danger of fire, keep flammable materials away from our homes, prune garden shrubs where necessary and avoid planting fire prone species. Good luck for the coming summer and hopefully, we’ll get some rain to replenish our water tanks.

Workshop organiser, Karen schmidt, said, “Many landholders are keen to create or re-create their dam as a dual purpose feature on their property – a wetland oasis for native fauna, a productive source of fish and crustaceans, while still serving the traditional roles of stock watering, irrigation and bushfire protection.” this workshop will provide tips and tricks to navigate the creation of micro-habitats, adding variations to the dam edge gradient, stock access control options, revegetation tips and much more. the expert presenter, Phil Moran from Noosa and district Landcare, encourages attendees to bring along plant samples from their own dams for identification and advice on their use or removal. the workshop coincides with Mooloolah Native Nursery’s open day with a 20% discount on plants, tours of the Biocontrol Facility and much more, see the Mooloolah River Landcare Facebook page for details. Our shorebirds are back

by Jamie Walker

N

oW i’M CALLiNG them our shorebirds but, in fact, they come to us from far, far away. this is the time of year when our coastal shorelines are animated by the activity of thousands of waders. these are not just our own endemic residents, but those that are summer visitors who have flown thousands of kilometres to escape the lethal winters of northern Asia and Alaska. When they arrive, they seek shores where the sand, mud and water combination holds the invertebrate food supply they need to keep them through the season. Without those places to feed and safe roosts to rest, their life support system would come to an end. As tides ebb, waders spread out to feed across a wet, glistening world; but, as the sea returns, they roost in elegant ranks of eastern Curlews, Whimbrels, Bar-tailed and Black-tailed Godwits, Great and Red Knots, Plovers, tatlers, sandpipers, stints and more. on their way to us, many of these birds have encountered difficulty beyond the normal stresses of long distance flight. Along their route, much of what they need has disappeared. in China, Korea, Japan and other countries, a lot of suitable shoreline has been lost to industrial and agricultural development, tourist resorts or other “improvement”. there are, however, hopeful signs of a new thinking which may reduce the extent and soften the impact of future seashore projects. in Australia we should offer good, persuasive examples when need for change and development is perceived. When i lived in the UK, my home was near one of the few breeding sites of the Black-tailed Godwit. A single ancient drove road (for cattle) penetrated the Fenland reserve and i could walk into its centre. Nesting Godwits would mob me if i dallied. the rule was to keep walking to prevent them from becoming distressed as they shouted from overhead or perched on fence posts. i also saw them gathered in red breeding plumage on the shores of dundalk Bay in Northern ireland; readying themselves for the 800km spring flight to iceland. i have been fortunate to have travelled, and have watched the same species’ migrating flocks stream past dubai beaches and noticed them wintering in the broad, braided river valley overlooked by the taj Mahal. Finally, i have found them, with their Bar-tailed cousins, on the shores of my new home in south-east Queensland – and, in my mind, the world joins up through contemplation of birds’ breeding and migration patterns. Birds, and nature as a whole, do not belong to just one nation or section of society. they belong to us all, and we

Many readers told us they enjoyed our last Q&A with a local hinterland business, so this month it’s time for Jeremy Nunn, farm manager of Platypus Turf, to be in the spotlight!

Platypus Turf Where did you grow up ? i grew up in south east Queensland. i was born in a little town called Kilcoy. i used to spend a lot of time in the hinterland area because my family was dairy farmers. We used to visit a lot of farms in the hinterland. What made you move to the hinterland? the people and the lifestyle and the warm weather. All these things combined with high rainfall make it a great place to have a farm. How long have you been running Platypus Turf? And what did you do before this? i have had a company for eight years now, that i set up. Platypus turf is a part of that company now. i’ve been working in the turf industry since 1999 when i was still in high school. it’s always been my dream to have a company like this. Do you have any funny stories from your work? Like the time i delivered a truck load of turf and laid it. then asked the owner ‘where is the water you said you had’ and he’s standing there with a watering can. don’t worry, in the end he had a large hose and portable irrigator!

What do you enjoy the most about your business? An opportunity to transform somebody’s space from a dry dust bowl to a lush green cool area that they can really enjoy. If you weren’t running Platypus Turf, what would you like to do? i would still be farming. What does a 'typical' day entail for you? We get up early. We check the orders for turf. then we prepare the machines and the paddocks and harvest the days orders. in the afternoon, it is spent or mowing or irrigating. in the evening we still have to check the pumps and irrigators. If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be? don’t overestimate your water storage. Platypus Turf is based at 1025 Mount Kilcoy Road, Mount Kilcoy, 4515 Ph: (07) 5498 1180

Dates hang from a local café in Syria

HandbuiltStone.com

Palmyra, syria A

MAN sits BY the market; a tall stack of very large flatbreads next to him. i see folks go to him, drop money in his hand and take some bread. i walk over and hold out my syrian notes as i don't know how much the bread is. the man senses me but doesn’t see me and i realise that he’s blind. A syrian woman comes to my aid, shows me the correct note and gives me the bread. i place the money in his hand. i feel his humility and i am grateful for her kind assistance. Whilst eating a delicious Bedouin lunch, we see an old sepia photo on the cafe wall. it is a Model t Ford parked in front of the arches of Palmyra. Allen suggests we do this with the truck. We split from each other near Palmyra. Allen heading to our camp while i go into the ruins to get my necklace. it’s a good kilometre and as i approach half a dozen kids pile out, calling "Hello, welcome." the children are from toddler to about ten, have hennaed hair and amazing almond shaped pale green eyes; combined with tanned skin and unruly curls, they are stunningly beautiful; wild and very engaging.

Desert nomads (Bedouins) cave inside a huge wind sculpted rock

three women sit on the earth patio. A small figure, covered in a cream blanket lays nearby on a sleeping mat. the jewellery seller, holds her hand out and shakes mine then offers me tea but i decline, keen to get back to camp before dark. she calls to someone and a child runs up, handing her the necklace. We exchange necklace for a five hundred syrian pound note. the Bedouin holds up her mum’s tiny hand for me to see. it is tattooed all over the back. A cloud of flies takes flight as she moves the blanket back to reveal a very wizened, tiny face; heavily tattooed below her lips and down her chest in rays. one eye is covered by a white patch bandage. tough to lose an eye at ‘100’. i hurry back to a quiet night behind the high mud wall of the campground. oMeoNe CoMiNG on a transcendental Meditation weekend Wendy Rosenfeldt retreat remarked that the people on these retreats were always really nice. she came from the legal profession and commented that if you had a bunch of her colleagues together this would definitely not be the case. it is not that the people on a tM retreat are all enlightened or the same type of person, they come from a variety of backgrounds and professions. Many people that come on the weekends are there because they have high levels of stress in their lives. But what makes a difference is that they are all transcending and experiencing that level of life where we are all connected. Quantum physics understands this level of life to be the Unified Field of all the laws of nature. it is at the basis of all life and the basis of the individual. When we transcend during the practice of tM, we experience this deep state in our mind. When you are in the experience you have gone beyond thinking, so you are not sitting there thinking about being connected with everything. You just are. i was recently on a course of people all doing their meditation in the same room and someone over the other side of the room moved and i experienced it as if part of me had moved. it is like being in a warm bath. if it is a comfortable temperature you don’t notice the difference between you and the water unless you start to move around.

over time this experience in meditation seeps into daily life. You start to feel that everything is connected to you. it can be subtle to begin with, but there is a growing sense of unity with your environment and more harmony with the people around you. While we are fighting for equal rights and tolerance for people with differences, it is just that, it is a fight. defining differences in sexuality and gender brings with it a range of responses. No amount of legislation is going to change peoples’ deep feelings and prejudices. in fact, it is often not the person that is being objected to, it is what they represent and actually how we feel about other people comes from how we feel inside. For example, driving in busy traffic when you are feeling stressed or running late, you may feel agitated at the person driving too slowly in front of you, they are an object of annoyance and if they happen to be male/female, a P or Lplater, elderly, the negativity can be directed to that type of person. transcend the superficial differences and we all come from the same stuff. When we have a living experience of this it is harder to maintain opposition to other people because we are experiencing that they are just another part of the bigger self. His is A powerful time. there is much that needs investigation and correction. We see that individuals and nature herself are clearly not expressing the health and vitality we are naturally capable of. Research tells us that cancer rates are increasing rather than going down, we see that all members of society, young and old are suffering health challenges of some sorts. We see that many individuals are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. our news reports predict all sorts of possible negative outcomes, from financial collapse, to dramatic weather patterns, to scientific experiments gone wrong. there was a time when us oldies could remember eating all manner of bread and cakes without digestive disturbances, now we have so many who are suffering from gluten and digestive intolerances. We see individuals who are trying to correct bodily health by taking medications, vitamins, various diets, all manner of exercises and practices often without noticing sustainable

benefits, in fact sometimes with added complications. often, we are too busy trying to do what we have to do to sustain ourselves and our families to truly investigate what is really happening. We are first and foremost energy beings. this beautiful earth is first and foremost energy substance. everything has a field of energy, some of which science has discovered, some we just know because we feel it. it is vitally important for the outcome of positive stable change within our bodies, minds and emotions as well as within our weather, the stability of our planet, and all of life that we share this time with, that we don’t polarise. this is a time when we will see that the most positive outcomes will manifest as we quieten our confusion, our fear, and become still, connect with the healing force within us, perhaps coming together in small groups to broadcast love and healing to all life and from that point of clarity taking external action.

Laugh your way to better health?! by Victoria McGuin

A

FeW WeeKs AGo, i attended a yoga class. this in itself is quite unusual, as i have often tried to ‘get into’ yoga, but never managed to keep it up. (i will keep trying though!) this, however, piqued my interest as it was called ‘Laughter Yoga’. the thought of deliberately laughing with a group of strangers made me….well, laugh! For those (like me) who haven’t heard of this before, Laughter Yoga has been on the scene since 1995, when an indian physician, dr Madan Kataria, brought together the breaths of yoga with playful exercises that mimicked or created laughter. dr Kataria found that when this was practised in a group with strong eye contact, the simulated laughter often

Affirmations and giggles

became real and natural. in addition, the health benefits of laughter have been linked to reduced blood pressure, a strengthened immune system, increase in blood circulation, and the release of ‘happy’ endorphins. With this in mind, i corralled a friend to join me, and we headed to our first class in Maleny Lane, organised by Rovielle Yamaki of soul about sushi. Queensland’s leading Laughter Yoga facilitator, HeatherJoy Campbell, ran the class and, in keeping with her name, she filled the space with her infectious joy! No yoga mat, towel or equipment is needed, just the openness to try something new. Warming up the laughter muscles, followed by moves such as ‘the clam’ soon had us genuinely laughing. Yes, you may feel a bit ridiculous and odd at first. But so do most people, so you are soon all chuckling together at the bizarreness of the situation. there is a sense of camaraderie and trust about laughing for no reason! When we cooled down, there was a time for sitting in a circle and some positive affirmations were shared. My friend Kristie and i found we got the giggles (took me back to the school classroom!), but as she said, “if you can’t have the giggles in a Laughter Yoga class, when can you?!” so, if you are interested in releasing stress, feeling welcomed, and giving your internal organs a good workout, the next Laughter Yoga class will be on November 2 at the back of Maleny Lane (in the garden), 10-11am, and the cost is $5.

We came, we laughed, we took a group selfie!

For queries call Rovielle on 0447 220 645. And if you need any more motivation, this is some of the feedback Rovielle received from the last class: What great fun! I feel lighter after an hour of laughter. Loved it! I would come once a week if it was on. Really enjoyed it - so good to laugh and be silly together. Hope it becomes a regular thing in Maleny sometime. Felt the tingling of energy going through my body. Great experience. Great stuff! So good. Life Love Laughter. Be these. Be yourself. Love seeing others in joy.

Breast Awareness Month ● a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing ● a change in the skin of the breast such as redness or dimpling ● an unusual pain that doesn't go away. there are now many ways to treat different types of breast cancer. Patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer are looked after by many different health professionals, including GPs, surgeons, oncologists, nurses and allied health professionals to name a few.

Physiotherapists can be involved to assist with, but not limited to:

O

CtoBeR 2019 is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this provides an opportunity for us to all focus on breast cancer and its impact on those affected by the disease in our community. it’s important for women of all ages to know what they can do to help find breast cancer early. Finding breast cancer early means there are more treatment options and the chances of survival are greatest. Breast awareness is important for women of all ages, even if you’re having regular mammograms. For information on breast cancer in men, visit Cancer Australia’s dedicated website, Breast Cancer in Men.

How to check your breasts You don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts. take the time to get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts as part of everyday activities like showering, dressing, putting on body lotion or simply looking in the mirror. Knowing what is normal for you will help you to detect any new breast or nipple changes. Breast changes to look out for include: ● a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast ● a change in the size or shape of the breast ● a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion

● exercise prescription to regain shoulder/arm movement after breast surgery ● sharing of information and education regarding lymphoedema ● early identification and management of lymphoedema should it occur ● guidance with returning to physical activity and exercise during treatment phase and subsequently following breast cancer treatment ● sharing information regarding support networks eg BCNA/centres eg Bloomhill depending on the individual client’s needs. so, remember, check your breasts and always seek medical advice if you have any queries or concerns.

toUGH WeeK in the Anglosphere. Not only donald trump in the UsA and Boris Johnson in the UK struggling to bluff and bluster their way out of their self-inflicted problems, but even the previously untouchable Canadian Justin trudeau was embroiled in decades old controversies over black face pranks. it was left to the Antipodes to hold the line, which New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern managed with her usual panache. But scott Morrison, for all his supposed insouciance, had worries that might prove more long lasting than the transient disasters of his colleagues. Last week the earth moved for him too – not a major tremor, certainly not a tsunami, but a rumbling that warned of a political tectonic shift that needed to be fixed promptly, before his remaining credibility was washed away by the rising waters those pesky climatologists keep harping about. some seven million people, 300,000 of them his own constituents, rallied in protest demanding more action – real action – over climate change. this could be shrugged off as yet another distraction – obviously they were not quiet Australians, the only kind worth worrying about. But they had a focus: Greta thunberg, whose excoriating speech at the United Nations gained worldwide attention and threatened to turn a demonstration into a movement. Clearly she had to be stopped, destroyed, vaporised. so scoMo and his hardened shock troops sprang into action. there was no need to respond to her arguments – too complicated, too time-consuming, and too risky, especially because they were largely irrefutable. terminating the messenger was much simpler, and in any case would be more fun – how good is smashing a teenager? so let’s get kicking. Her crimes are clearly many and deep rooted, but the worst of them is undeniable and irreparable: she is young.

Not actually a child, although we will call her that when it suits, but by definition too naïve, stupid and gullible to have delivered that speech – or her numerous previous speeches – without coaching and manipulation. she must be the victim of a sinister conspiracy, a cult aimed at undermining western civilisation. so it is not really her fault, except that it is – she should go back home (or better, a home run not by her obviously abusive parents, but one that is politically sound) and learn the revealed truth about the eternal benefits of fossil fuel and the fallibility of the science to the contrary. But perhaps she can’t – after all, she has Asperger’s syndrome, so she is not entirely rational – barking mad, in fact. His lunacy is attested by her habit of wearing a pigtail – what normal girl wears a pigtail these days? And she speaks kind of funny, not like us dinky-di ockers. But above all, she is angry, or as Morrison might call it, needlessly anxious – why would a healthy 16-year-old be anxious about the future of the planet, her hopes and dreams? We adults have it all under control and if we don’t, well, something will turn up. Get back to school, you little presumptuous brat. But Morrison, resuming his daggy dad persona, is at least marginally sympathetic. Kids should be kids, he insists, and teenagers should be teenagers he told a bemused audience at his own UN address – perhaps he meant they should spend more time on the traditional teenage pursuits of sex and drugs and rock’n’roll… He respected the passion of the young: “my impulse is always to respond positively and to encourage them,” he continued patronisingly. “to provide context, perspective and hope. We must respect and harness” – yes it’s all about control –“the passion and aspirations of our younger generations rather than allow others to compound or worse exploit their anxiety for their own agendas.” that is clearly his job and his success on asylum seekers,

sudanese gangs, internet porn, unnamed security scares and all the rest of it shows that he is bloody good at it. And to prove it, he was happy to drag in his own young daughters, aged 12 and 10 respectively. they discussed climate change and fossil fuels – but he wanted them to keep everything in context and perspective, just as he had said. He wanted them to be optimistic, looking forward to what he called a pristine environment (if he ever knew what the word pristine meant, he has long forgotten it) in an ideal future. We can just see him as he gathers them on his lap, and their little eyes light up at the prospect of a landscape scarred by coalmines, with power plants belching clouds of smoke all around as they stroke and pat their father’s pet, the lump of anthracite he one cradled lovingly in parliament. Not at all like that deluded dupe Greta thunberg. Was there anything more to say? of course there was, the usual lies about how Australia was doing its bit, more than its bit, and in any case it wasn’t polluting very much at all, and places like China should do more, which was no doubt why we were flogging them as much coal as we could possibly manage. And now for the big announcement: cardboard man has morphed into plastic man. scoMo is going to clean up the world’s oceans. Well, not really, but he is going to try and find someone who will, as long as there’s a buck in it, which, in the current circumstances that recycling plants around the world are either closing down or putting harsh restrictions on the waste they will accept, may be tricky. Which is no doubt why Morrison’s government has some kind of aspiration to phase out the use of plastic packaging in Australia, but is not putting a timetable on it. the environment is not just climate change, he thundered, and as far as he is concerned, that’s certainly true – it is not about climate change at all. And Australia has absolutely nothing to apologise for. or at least Australia is not going to apologise, and definitely not to Greta thunberg and millions of enthusiastic followers. Not now, not ever. deny, obfuscate, distract, mislead – and if that does not work, terminate with extreme prejudice.

The Anecdote of

Ryan Sharkey R

He owns two large dogs, four chickens and a simple outlook on life. His weekend mainly consists of going to the beach, no matter what the weather, to take his dogs for a walk. His dogs are called Rosie and shanti and measure up to be around Ryan’s hip height. shanti is like Ryan’s daughter and never leaves his side. Ryan lives in Perth in a small suburban street with high fences and small backyards. His house is small but has a backyard to make up for it. it’s made up of dead grass and paving stones. the paving stones are just like a toupee on a bald man, making the lack of grass look worse. His backyard also has a broken clothesline, a shed, a dingy chicken coop, a simple patio with a dog bed and a eucalyptus tree that dwarfs not only the house but covers the backyard in a blanket of leaves and twigs. What i have learnt from many friends of Ryan is he has collected many stories over the years, some funny, some serious. so, one day i sat down coffee in one hand, choc-chip biscuit in the other, with the sole intent to listen to his anecdotes. After a while he began to tell his favourite story. the story that he told me was about his dog Rosie and a very strange encounter at the beach. it was a gloomy and foggy night. Ryan was walking his dogs on the beach when a man in a large greasy black overcoat with a tattered hood, greasy black slack pants and scuffed black boots approached in a limping sort of walk. His hair was greasy and jet black. He stank so much that you could probably catch a whiff of him over 200 kilometres away. this odd man approached Ryan and asked, “is-ss that a lagaradore?” in snakelike tones, “in my country i eat that,” then barked up a cough that sounded full of phlegm and grinned showing Ryan crooked broken teeth.

YAN sHARKeY is my godfather. Ryan is short and stocky, with white hair and he dresses in button up casual shirts with long shorts. He has an average sized mouth that doubles its size when smiling. He has a grey five o’clock shadow around his chin and mouth. His eyes are deep blue and seem to sparkle and he is always quick to laugh.

Library members can access movies, audiobooks, music and magazines all for FREE!

Ryan stammered out, “A what?” “A lagaradore,” the man replied, his face crisscrossed by scars twisting hideously underneath the cowl. “Actually the dog in question is not a lagaradore!” Ryan’s tone had begun to fill with anger, he did this to replace the fear that had just crept up and stabbed him like a knife. either this man was being a nuisance, or he was going to try and eat his dogs. in a last and desperate attempt, he stammered, “these are not dogs.” He stammered because the fear he was feeling was clogging his throat, choking him, but he fought back the fear and said, “these people are my family, this is my wife,” he said indicating to Rosie who realised that Ryan was complimenting her and grinned from ear to ear and wagged her tail happily in a way that said, ‘everything is fine’. “And this is my daughter!” he finished pointing to shanti. the man’s hand faded away, then his arm, then his torso, then his legs, then his shoulder then with a whisper escaping the mouth, “lagaradore,” his head disappeared into the fog like a ghost never to be seen again.
