HAve BeeN so excited about this November edition! Firstly, we have our features: Maleny state school with their dedication to helping our planet; Forest Glen’s Kadelle smith with big dancing dreams, a journey with dale Jacobsen through writing and music, and a slice of Maleny history, thanks to a butcher’s shop. Next, we have Creative Cuts bursting at the seams, tempting food from France and Africa, markets, art, a new allied health centre and charities to support. However, what i am bursting to share with you is our two new pages. those who know me will be aware i am a fan of the artist, cartoonist and poet, Michael Leunig. i find him inspirational and heartfelt, with a social conscience and a passion for our planet. so, i am thrilled to say his cartoons will now be in the Hinterland Times each month in our Letters, Light relief and Leunig page. We have a wealth of people across the range who love to write, or read, or listen to, or perform poetry - and many who do all four. How good it feels to offer them a platform with our new Poets’ Corner. so, there you have it. And i hope you like it! our wide community is rich in talent, creativity, ingenuity and generosity – both of deed and spirit. i hope the Hinterland Times is a constant reminder of that, and that readers feel informed, comforted and inspired through these pages. i know life can be hard, everyone has their own struggles, and world events can seem overwhelming and pervasive at times. But, i remember something Mahatma Gandhi once said, I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet. i aim to keep Ht’s feet clean, so you can find sanctuary here.

oLLoW tHe reds’ journey through the hood and deep into the wood, where sightings of wolf-like creatures have been reported. Will the reds find their inner power and overcome the bullies (wolves)? What choice will the reds make when the wolves are in a vulnerable position? Perhaps we all feel vulnerable sometimes? Watch the reds shine light on the darkness and bring the community together. Red in the Hood is an adaptation of the classic tale Little Red Riding Hood and is created by Kirsty szironChalkley, Kester Chalkley and the late Adam Bruin. originally, the award-winning seven-minute piece was the brainchild of well-loved school teacher, Adam Bruin with Kirsty sziron-Chalkley, and was created for a sunshine Coast state school’s story-dance competition. this is Heartspace Performing Arts Centre’s first major

dance concert, as the school opened early this year, in conjunction with Maleny independent school. Featuring over 110 students, many who have only started dancing this year, with dance costumes sustainably sourced where possible, Red in the Hood is no ordinary dance concert.

Kirsty says, “i’ve always created story-dances with meaning, so not only is the audience entertained, they feel moved by a thought-provoking performance. dancers at Heartspace are learning dance steps, but also the power of choice and life lessons.” sadly, Adam Bruin passed away from the effects of a brain tumour late last year so this reworked and extended show, performed almost a year to the day of Adam’s death, is dedicated to Kirsty and Kester’s friend and his family, and a portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Brain tumour Alliance Australia. Red in the Hood will be showing at the Maleny Community Centre, Friday November 16, 6pm and saturday November 17, 11am. tickets $20/$10. DJale acobsen A life of adventure Dale Jacobsen was a highly regarded HT feature writer for five years. She gathered the stories of our locals and now, we have the privilege of glimpsing into Dale’s world: one of challenges, adventure, music and inspiration.

ALe JACoBseN WAs born in Brisbane in the late ‘40s and lived in Weller’s Hill in a little worker’s cottage. “As a kid, Bribie island was my holiday refuge. My sister and i had the run of the bush.� in part, dale was shaped by strong women. early influences came from her mother, aunt and older sister. she speaks of a time when a teacher inspired her vision. “i’ve always been a bit of a loner and always loved remote,

wild places. When i was eight years old, i had a teacher, a young man obsessed with Antarctica. “in 1955, in the lead up to the international Geophysical Year, once a week, throughout the year, he would have a little story about Antarctica and the progress being made from Australia to send a team down.� enclosed in a classroom, this child discovered a continent of mountains, ice and snow - no people, and decided it was her place. “We had chooks and concrete tubs in the backyard. so, in the morning, particularly in winter, to go and feed the chooks, i’d wash my face in the cold water at the tubs, let it dry in the cold wind and pretend i was in Antarctica.� in tandem with dale fantasising about the Antarctic, was a budding writer whose hero was Uncle shawn - journalist, poet, author and war correspondent. “When i was about ten years old, i had this exercise book that i covered in brown paper, ironed flat, then decorated it and started writing a story. i imagined what it would be like holding my first published book. “And, when i finally got to hold that first book Union Jack published in 2011, it was every bit as thrilling as that ten-year-old knew it would be.� Like many girls in the early ‘60s, directed by the expectations of parents and society, dale studied commercial and home science subjects at high school.

Dale Jacobsen at her writer’s hut, shares words from Being Lucy


“Marriage and three children in my mid-twenties, i lived the life of a mother but also did things like study at home for my real estate practice exams and lots of research about Antarctica.” When dale’s children were young teenagers, there was a defining moment when she knew her life had changed. A corkscrew type roller coaster ride at a theme park was key. “the spirit of adventure that had been in my mind all that time was suddenly released into my body and i knew if i was brave enough to do that, i could do anything. “so, from that moment, my life blossomed but my marriage declined. it was sad in many ways because until then i was like the bird in the gilded cage but all of a sudden that cage door opened.” time out with two suitcases and two guitars in remote, mid-winter tasmania, dale isolated herself and wrote out her internal struggle. A journey of self-discovery that led dale to university. Being a musician with classical guitar training to sixth grade shaped an idea that the conservatorium was the answer. However, science won out over music and, at the age of 42, dale Jacobsen graduated Griffith University with a degree: Bachelor of science – Australian environmental studies. “in the meantime, i went to an instrument-making display, saw an Appalachian dulcimer and wanted to make one. i was invited to the workshop where my tutor was doug.” (For those who may not of heard of one, an Appalachian dulcimer is a stringed folk instrument.) Meeting luthier, doug eaton, led to an enduring partnership. dale then decided she wanted to be an instrument maker. she made 20 trapezoid Cimbalom dulcimers and was one of three people selected to attend a congress at the Cimbalom World Association in Belarus, russia. on her return home to Maleny, dale set about to design and make ‘the perfect dulcimer’ subsequently named Aurora. dale’s love of music led to her playing and singing in bands. they could always be seen at Maleny’s Celtic tearooms on sunday afternoons and at themed concerts, usually scottish based. “i played music and made dulcimers for years but the tug to write was always there. then, one night i had a dream. i was sitting at my computer writing a book… “Not long after, we were at a folk festival viewing a display of railway history. they had a huge photo of a railway camp tent with a family outside. the light went on. this is my story, of my grandfather, his railway and union days. “i knew little of my grandfather. Four years of spending many days in the musty railway union office going through 100-year old records then suddenly, i came across my grandfather’s signature, signing as secretary and i cried.” the research for what became dale’s first book Union Jack was intense. she spent days at the John oxley Library immersed in railway history. ten years of research and writing brought her grandfather’s story to life. dale had written a short story about a woman in a

retirement village in 2005. she says the story was ‘given’ to her and remains the best writing she’s ever done. it won the ABC short story award, was professionally recorded and read on the ABC. “that gave me confidence. i had written Union Jack but hadn’t actually sent it off to any publishers. it was a turning point. “the second novel presented itself because i was a member of the Kosciuszko Huts Association (KHA).” KHA is a voluntary association formed in 1971 to assist with the conservation, management and reconstruction of huts, homesteads and surrounds within Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) in southern NsW. “We were down at a work party and i came across this story of a woman buried in a grave up in the hills. Her story got to me and so, i spent another ten years researching and writing Yenohan’s Legacy published in 2013. then Lucy strobridge came into my life. “We were in victoria with KHA when i visited the hut of this reclusive woman. she had died five years before, aged 80, but her spirit was absolutely still there. i came home but when i went back to do in-depth research, she wasn’t in the hut anymore. she was here with me.”

Lou Walsh is a familiar face at Maleny State School (MSS) where she has been teaching for 26 of her 30 year career. There were excited whispers in the community about a popular new War on Waste program. Writer, Angela Reedman-Polinski, sat down with Lou and the students to hear about the program and how everyone from prep to grade six is getting involved.

LWAYs WorKiNG with the students to strengthen the community and build up her student’s social awareness skills, Lou Walsh is a warm, energetic and kind pillar of the school community. “this is one of my greatest achievements in 30 years of teaching and i'm so proud of all of the Garden Club for maintaining a huge effort throughout the whole year.” two of the key students involved in the project, William McCallum, a Year 4 student and Helen owens, a Year 6 student and school captain are leading the team to share an understanding of how everyday people can help the environment. the school’s War on Waste program started in 2017 when William’s class saw waste around the school. “We present a weekly report on parade each week and three times a week we check the levels and maintain the bins around the school.” they started with checking the composting bins and creating signage for students to recycle and to take the lids off before they put their bottles in the recycling bins. “twice a week we walk up to the Maleny iGA and the Maleny Woolworths stores to deliver their soft plastics packaging for recycling.” school captain, Helen, has noticed that the students found it easy to know where to put the soft plastics. “they just do the scrunch test and then they know which bin to use.”

Mss signed up with the official Waste 2 resource school stArs Program and the process began with a three-step plan. Lou enjoyed observing the students’ excitement grow as they tried out new ideas and learned more about the processes. “First they conducted an audit on the school’s waste and secondly they provided a recycling bin for every class. the final step was to introduce a soft plastics bin which is 50% of the waste identified in the school.” Lou ran a lesson with each class in the school to discuss the impacts of recycling and why it is important for the students, staff, families and community to get involved. “it blows me away that ten-year-old kids can run a whole recycling and composting system throughout an entire school.”

William proudly goes ‘bin-diving’ to rescue discarded soft plastics and checks tuckshop label names to help remind students to make good choices in their recycling. the Garden Club members empty out the compost into the veggie garden beds and regularly consult with their friendly and helpful groundsman, Mr sherwell. “We do all of the planning, work and maintenance ourselves and it feels good to see the results,� said William. it seems parents have caught the sustainability bug too, learning from the students as they share news on the garden and the program’s successes. “We hear from a lot of parents that they have a vegetable garden and compost system going now and they are learning more about which vegetables to plant and eat,� shared Lou. there is also a financial literacy aspect to the program as students, staff and parents have been buying the herbs and vegetables produced by the students each week. As the vegetable gardens produce income for the students, it gets re-invested back in to more seeds, tools and saplings to keep the project flowing. the project team was awarded a $900 grant from Maleny rotary, which they have used to buy more compost bins, mulch, seedlings and gardening tools. Parents and grandparents have also been donating compost bins to keep the system flourishing. these have been gratefully received by the team. Next, William wants to canvas Andrew Powell MP to arrange for a Maleny facility for the new Queensland Container refund scheme which begins this month. “We need somewhere close by so people will use it easily and regularly.�

the team also develops short videos, which they share to the entire school each week to share their progress and capture the attention of their peers. As the team keeps an eye on the future, these videos are being entered into a sunshine Coast regional Council competition for environmental media. this week, Barung Landcare donated a native beehive to the school project for the students to learn first-hand of the importance of bees. “Barung Landcare has given us such a special gift, the kids from the Garden Club had the native bees all over them and no one was frightened. it was a beautiful sight and great to have our principal there to observe their enthusiasm. these are the moments the kids will treasure for a long time to come,� Lou smiled. Lou is so proud of her students and what they are achieving with their drive and enthusiasm for the project. “it has been a highlight of my career to see children embracing something so important for their future,“ said Lou. “our students were instrumental in arranging a second soft plastic recycling point in town at the Maleny iGA, a positive change for the community and an opportunity for these young students to realise that they have a voice!� William summarises the aim of the project perfectly and how we can all be involved. “one person can make a difference to a chain reaction. We are a group of kids and a school making a difference, we all need to help recycle and look after our environment!�

ALeNY Hosts 15 heritage listed sites, one of which, celebrating 100 years and still being used for its original purpose, is Maleny Butchery built during World War 1. this historic building is being acknowledged as part of the remembrance day celebrations as it was there from the beginning. on december 6, 1918 Maleny welcomed home its soldiers from war with a victory Parade. At the time, it was reported in the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser: ‘Maleny’s Great day victory Celebrations. the weather was admirably suited for the event, the people nobly rose to the occasion, and the pageant entirely eclipsed any previous function ever witnessed. Practically every person in the district was present, and the crowd numbered many hundreds, all of whom carried some patriotic emblem… the procession was over ½ mile in length, and started from the doctor’s residence, passed through the township to Mr. dunlop’s paddock.’ in Queensland, between 1915 and 1929, a wartime Labor government introduced state butcher shops enabling the price of meat to be fixed. it assisted people in deprived circumstances to make ends meet. While there were 90 such butchers, the Maleny shop remained privately owned. the local butcher shop was a fundamental part of each community; meat central to the Australian diet. Butchers wore navy blue and white striped aprons and a scabbard fixed in place by a large leather belt, knives and sharpening steel at the ready. the business of selling meat was a family concern. Butchers closely associated with

their customers. it was where tales were told, stories shared. Meat hanging from butcher’s hooks on a rail hovered above a sawdust strewn floor while the shop’s centrepiece was an oversized wooden chopping block, usually scrubbed daily with salt. raw meat smell permeated the air. A ‘sign’ of the times was often seen on the wall of a butcher shop. it authoritatively stated ‘No expectorating’ meaning no spitting, which was a social norm for men of that time. the history of Maleny and its butchers is told by the Historical society’s desley Malone: “the first butcher shop was where the primary school is today. that was in Francis dunlop’s paddock with a bunya tree and little slab hut. dunlop, an original selector, started butchering on February 19, 1898.

“Conditions for selectors were tough. People often say to me, ‘Why did they cut the trees down?’ our pioneers were timber-getters. the government around the 1870s issued a licence to anyone for a fee of 10 shillings a year to enable the holder to fell red cedar anywhere. “the selector paid two shillings and six pence an acre and had to pay rent, like rates, before the end of March. “they had to reside on the land continuously for five years. Failure to reside on it for six months could see the selection forfeited and all improvements reverted to Her Majesty the Queen. “then, during the five-year term they had to prove they’d spent ten shillings an acre on improvements. At the end of that time they could go to the council and apply for a deed of Grant. “As the township developed, Francis dunlop moved his butcher shop to the roadside near where the pine trees are at the primary school. We don’t believe he built the Maple street shop.” A docket headed ‘dr. to Francis dunlop, Family Butcher’, dated october 31, 1912 to Mr W.F. Gardner outlines the meat purchases over a period of several months in spite of the invoice terms being ‘strictly monthly’. on average, meat was purchased every three days and was mostly beef. the order was recorded by piece rather than weight. in one instance, 42 pieces of meat cost 12 shillings, three pence. this is at a time when meat was a staple food and the weekly per capita consumption of meat in Australia was around five and a half pounds in weight. research paints a hazy picture as to whether butcher, Mr P.J. Heenan relocated the shop to where it stands today or if it was built sometime between 1915 and 1920 by

Mr Jack Grigor. J.A. Grigor Family Butcher in Maple street sported a dunny out back and, in the early days, the cold room was water cooled. the heritage listed building embraces its past within a timber frame, clad with fibro, timber and corrugated iron. old metals fittings can be seen in the ceiling of a room at the back of the building. desley adds: “While there was a succession of owners, the butcher shop served Maleny for 50 or 60 years as their sole butcher. Years ago, bread, meat and other supplies used to go out to all the farmers on the cream truck. People would put in their order and the cream truck picked it up.” in spite of the fact our diet sees us eating less meat and supermarkets attract a large portion of sales, the traditional butcher survives, still offering quality products and personal service. Visions of dancing in the romantic city of Paris, in some of the world’s most treasured ballets, is a whimsical dream for most young girls that take that first ballet class. For Forest Glen’s Kadelle Smith, this dream could become a reality. Writer Rebecca Mugridge met with the young dancer to find out more.

roM tHe MoMeNt they slip on their ballet shoes and learn about the grace and elegant dance technique, to that magical moment they wear their first tutu or undertake their first exam, ballet has a way of forever taking a place in a dancer’s heart. Local baby ballerina Kadelle smith, ten, from Forest Glen has just won a Gold Medal at the prestigious Asian Grand Prix in Hong Kong and now has her sights set on a ballet career in Paris, in particular, the Paris opera Ballet school. the Paris opera Ballet dates back to 1669 and links to Louis Xiv. to join such a dance company would be one of the greatest achievements in a ballerina’s life and no easy feat.

the Asian Grand Prix, held in Hong Kong, is a high level competition where ballet dancers from all over the Asian Pacific compete and showcase their ballet artistry with a team of international dance experts. they have the opportunity to receive awards and scholarships that will help develop their career in ballet. this year was the first time that one of the qualifying finals was held in Australia, where Kadelle won first place. to win gold at such an elite level competition is a massive achievement. the moment the judge announced Kadelle was the winner will stay with the young ballerina forever. “i was shocked and excited. i was shaking,” Kadelle said. the impressive young girl with vibrant red hair and gorgeous smile is as down to earth as she is inspiring; for Kadelle, it is all about the artistry of ballet, you can see it is a part of who she is. the dancer has an impressive portfolio already with years of expert training, first-place trophies and national dance titles behind her, and has performed main roles in two ballet productions with Brisbane City Youth Ballet. it takes a great deal of hard work combined with natural talent to reach such an elite level in ballet. in fact, as far as elite sports go, it is one of the most physically and mentally demanding and competitive out there. the young ballerina currently trains 30 hours a week and makes the commute three, sometimes four times a week to Brisbane for coaching at elite school, Classical Coaching.

Kadelle hopes to dance her way to Paris

A brief respite in rehearsals

“When i was younger my mum said she didn’t want me to be a ballerina at first because she had been right through it all,” said Kadelle. However, the passion was there from the start along with the drive to achieve. “she loved ballet right from the start and always wanted

more,” said mum Miranda, who is an inspiring woman in her own right and was a dancer herself. the prima ballerina in the making undertakes hours of stretching and conditioning, practising and enhancing her skills, although that elusive ‘X’ factor is something that comes from within. “Judges are often commenting on how captivating she is and how they cannot take their eyes off her as she performs,” Miranda shared. Kadelle began dancing at just three years old, with her mother at the family business, dance empire, which has Kinderballet classes right across the sunshine Coast. Kadelle is also now an ambassador for the national Kinderballet brand who help sponsor her travel to competitions and events. Along her dance journey so far she has also met some amazing role models, including the director of the Queensland Ballet Li Cunxin from Mao’s Last Dancer who “kissed me on the cheek”, laughed Kadelle, when she performed for him a couple of years ago whilst training with local ballet school, sunshine Coast Conservatory of dance. “i like to look up to people,” said Kadelle whose current idol is Bianca scudamore, a fellow Australian ballerina who has just joined the Paris opera Ballet school in France. “We have already talked about relocating,” said Miranda when asked about what the family would do if Kadelle was offered a place in a european ballet school. Kadelle’s sister Bailey, 12, also a talented ballerina, is one of her biggest supporters, “i was very happy for her and i was very proud of her. she is always practising at home,” Bailey said of Kadelle’s recent big win. the two sisters are extremely close and very supportive of one another. even more recently, the international Get the Beat finals saw Kadelle awarded runner-up national Petite Champion which comes with an invitation to compete in America next year, with a select group of other elite dancers in team Australia - very exciting times indeed. People can watch Kadelle in an upcoming ballet production by Brisbane City Youth Ballet of the Wizard of OZ, held at the Conservatorium theatre at Griffith University in southbank. All artists also do a meet-and-greet at the end of each production. Kadelle is deservedly thrilled with how her career is progressing, “i can’t imagine not dancing,” she said, as it was time to say goodbye. After talking with this elegant and focussed young girl, i can’t imagine it either. TIPS FOR LANDLORDS OF RETAIL PREMISES – PART 1

Our hinterland schools are pretty special, and we have been running a monthly article finding out more about the person at the helm. This month it’s Principal Paul Lowik, from Woombye State School. 1. Are you and your family from this area? No. My family and i moved here in July 2006 and i was given the position of Acting Principal at Woombye state school in early February 2007. i was given the permanent position three years later. We have lived in Calliope, redcliffe, Grosmont and Mungar. i am originally from ipswich.

As a landlord of commercial premises it is important to identify what business your tenant will be carrying out from your premises so that you can prepare a lease that will comply with the requirements of the relevant act involved. In Queensland commercial leases generally speaking come under two distinct areas; the first being retail shops which are governed by the Retail Shop Leases Act and the second being non retail shops governed by provisions of the Property Law Act. I shall concentrate my discussion on leases that come under the Retail Shop Leases Act.

2. What do you do on your days off? spend time with family, catching up with grandchildren and friends, yard work, household maintenance as well as play field hockey. My wife and i have four daughters and two grandchildren that we enjoy spending time with. i love to head out and fish from my kayak and i enjoy reading, particularly biographies and autobiographies.

When negotiating with your prospective tenant these are some important tips to keep in mind:

Why did you choose to become an educator? in my primary school days we had over 50 students in a class and it was impossible for the teacher to see each student individually, thus peer teaching was used. i clearly remember the excitement displayed by my friends when they understood a topic that i was sharing with them. From those early years, my desire to become a teacher grew.

• DISCLOSURE both you and your tenant must provide disclosure in the particular format provided by the Retail Shop Leases Regulations. As a landlord your disclosure must be in the form of a Lessor Disclosure Statement annexing a copy of the lease. The Lessor Disclosure Statement gives information about the lease such as the term of the lease, the option periods available, the rental payable, whether bond is payable etc. Importantly note that this information must be given to the tenant at least seven days before the parties enter into the Lease otherwise the tenant will be at liberty to terminate the lease at any time within the next six month period. Your tenant also has to provide you with disclosure to. In the Lessee Disclosure Statement the tenant gives you disclosure of way of a Lessee Disclosure Statement as well proof of both legal and financial advice from their accountant and lawyer in a Financial Advice Report and a Legal Advice Report to say that they have been advised of their legal obligations as a lessee and had the financial implications of the tenancy explained.

What are the strengths of the school community? the community is incredible; united in its quest to make Woombye state school an awesome place. this starts with the supportive parents providing fantastic students for our school. often, visiting teachers who are in for the day comment positively about the behaviour of the students

What are your plans for the next year for the school? Next year, our focus will be ensuring our curriculum planning is aligned with the Australian Curriculum. reading Comprehension will also be a focus for improvement. outside the classroom, we will continue in partnership with our wonderful P&C team to beautify and enhance our school grounds with murals, working bees and facility upgrades. 7. What is the most rewarding part of your job? the smiles on the faces of the students, parents and staff as they enjoy the positive culture and ethos of our school that each of them contributes to. 8. What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt? i have learnt that to be a good leader, you must be a good listener. We have two eyes, two ears and one mouth and they should be used in that ratio. After all, John Maxwell often says, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!” You show how much you care by listening first before answering or telling. 9. Did a teacher inspire you when you were a student? No, not really. i got on quite well with all of my teachers. Back in my school days (the dark ages) we had large class sizes, thus it was difficult to develop relationships with the teachers as they were too busy trying to teach. 10. What is your motto or favourite quote? “i’ve learnt that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

• TERM AND OPTIONS keep in mind what you want to do with your premises when you negotiate the term and any options (further terms). An example is a lease that has an initial term of three years with two options each of three years’ duration. It is important that you note that legally, as long as your tenant is not in breach, you have to honour the lease for the whole period of time until the end of the second option period – in this case a period of nine years.

roFessioNAL CoUNseLLor, sue Krucker, will once again be coordinating the it’s in the Bag (iitB) campaign, as the Maleny shero for the Aussie charity Share the Dignity. Are you able to help? “this is when generous people all over Australia fill new or pre-loved bags with new sanitary items, everyday essentials, and items that would make a woman feel special,� explained sue. every bag created in Maleny goes to registered charity, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC), for Nooreen Harris and her wonderful team to distribute to ladies and women who present, in need, during the Christmas period. throughout the remainder of Queensland and Australia, these bags are donated to shelters, refuges, drought-stricken farming communities, charity partners and other service providers to ensure women and teenage girls in need receive a lovingly created gift at Christmas time. For some this is the only gift they will receive all year. sue explained why she became involved, “As a professional counsellor, i am very aware of the effects homelessness has on women of all ages, whether it be due to economic challenges, domestic violence or other circumstances.

ALeNY rsL sUB-BrANCH is organising a re-enactment of the 1918 Maleny victory Parade. the parade will be held on remembrance day, sunday November 11, at 10am in Maleny culminating at the Maleny rsL for the remembrance day service. Permits are in place from Council, Police and dept tMr to close the main area of Maleny between 10am and 11am. Whilst the parade will be a draw for the public, the main focus of the day will be the centenary of the end of World War 1 and the beginning of peace. the original parade was a civilian affair with only 12 ex-servicemen involved. it is believed it was put on by the families of the servicemen still overseas (there was no deployment by airlines then). the Maleny rsL have tried to have as many direct descendants as possible in the parade, floats and cars from Blackall range Horseless Carriage Club and equestrian vehicles from Australian Carriage driving society. there will also be approximately 80 local school children, cadets from ts Centaur on a replica of HMAs sydney built by Maleny Mens Club, Maleny equestrian Group members, 5th Light Horse troopers, an old ambulance, Bushrangers

visited Le reLAis Bressan restaurant and café on a rainy day, so the view to the ocean was shrouded in mist. However, the ambiance from my host, thierry Clerc, more than made up for the weather. As i sat enjoying a creamy cappuccino and croissant (made with French flour), a steady stream of visitors came through the doors. Many greeted thierry like an old friend – he clearly has a loyal following. i watched the umming and ahing over the selection of sweet treats and cakes. it’s certainly a tough decision, with offerings such as peanut and chocolate tart, glutenfree coconut meringue jam cake, and strawberry brûlée tart. thierry came to Australia from Burgundy 30 years ago, “i was imported with the Hilton Hotel,” he laughed. He had a restaurant in Brisbane for 13 years before moving with his wife, Cindy, to Flaxton. “We’ve been here 15 years this month,” thierry said proudly. the restaurant offers classic French fare. “i would try to change the menu, but people want the popular dishes, snails, duck a l’orange, crème brûlée, crêpe suzette.” there is French beer on tap and a selection of French wine to complement the meal. (thierry also offers some Australian dishes for those not in the mood for French flavours.) “our café also has light lunches, fresh baguettes,

cauliflower and salmon gratin, and our cream of sweet potato soup, which i have been making for 28 years!” Cindy also makes all the cakes on the premises. this month, a local florist will be occupying a room at the front of the café, so fragrant flowers and attractive blooms will also welcome visitors. thierry loves being here, but also visits his French home for six weeks a year. “i actually have a house in the countryside where i grew up. People here can rent it, just come and see me. the village only has 560 people and a quarter of those are my family!” Business is steady, and Christmas day lunch is a popular choice for many. “i am so grateful to the locals who support us and regularly visit,” thierry said. “i want to thank them very much.” the coffee shop is open thursday – sunday, 8am – 4pm, and sunday 8am – 10.30am for a breakfast special.

One of Cel’s most notable creations is the Akara which is served in a salad wrap, though also equally delicious on their own. Akara is made using blackeyed peas which are soaked overnight, then peeled individually and finally deep fried resulting in a flavour and texture comparable to chicken. Akara can also be steamed rather than deep fried for a healthier option called Moi Moi, which is paired wonderfully with a fragrant coconut rice salad. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in preparation for service, but it is all worth it to share something completely new and tasty with the community. Roger Loughnan celebrates

20 years

eetiNG WitH MAPLetoN real estate agent, roger Loughnan, recently was a genuine pleasure. As roger himself admits with a smile, “real estate agents tend to rank alongside lawyers for public trust”, but not in this instance. “i fell in love with this area when we used to come for holidays on the range, and living here i notice one thing we all have in common – we all feel privileged to live here. the climate, soil, water, landscape, produce, the people.” “i initially lived in Maleny, and in 1998 i purchased Montville village Agency, which was located next to the iGA.” over 20 years roger Loughnan real estate has sold over 730 properties, and roger has employed locals and given back to the community. Part of his contribution was taking on the helm of the Montville Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and 2011. His tenure included the Festival of Walks event that produced the Montville Heritage trail Map, and a Kids Walk at Baroon Pocket dam. He also linked local businesses with Montville state school, which led to the annual tree Lighting Ceremony, amongst other events. He is also proud to sponsor the kids’ end-of-season trophies for the range United soccer Club, and has been quietly contributing these for the past six or more years. With the business now in Mapleton, it is a time to reflect on all that has gone by. “i am conscious of time, now we are celebrating 20 years. Where did it go? We are roaring through life and i feel it’s been a blessing to be connected to so many people. i just want to say thank you to them all.” one of roger’s other personal achievements was producing and publishing a book of his father’s memoirs, entirely self-funded. “dad’s wife Marilyn and i would record dad’s stories - he had an incredible life.” As Kitch Loughnan (roger’s father) says in the introduction: “i have had a charmed life! i have been electrocuted, thrown by bucking horses, had a snake in my pants, been horned out the yard by wild cattle, caught in a windmill, bashed by the Japs, machine-gunned, torpedoed and chased by an elephant.” if you are curious to know more, roger has copies for sale or loan in his office!

He HistoriC GYMPie railway station celebrated the First run day of the Mary valley rattler last month, and now the train is in regular operation for you to climb aboard! take a journey through the picturesque Mary valley and experience all the different elements the rattler has to offer: a heritage railway experience, historic railway stations, the rich mining history of the area, and the fine produce of the region. Morning and afternoon services will run on Wednesdays, saturdays and sundays for a return journey from the historic Gympie or Amamoor stations via dagun. He dAte oF the Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Fest for 2019 is saturday, June 29. With 2018 marking the 10th anniversary of the festival, the committee members who have worked so hard over the years to establish the Fest as an essential easter saturday date in the sunshine Coast events calendar decided it was time to hand over the reins. the challenge to continue this event has been taken up by a new committee, with hopefully more volunteers as word gets around. With the support of local sponsors and businesses, the date for the festival has been changed for 2019 to June 29. Hopefully, the first saturday of the June school holidays will become the established date of the festival into the future. stall holders, sponsors, volunteers and visitors are asked to take note of the new date and keep an eye out for more information as the new committee establishes it’s website and gets operations under way over the following months. Snakes alive! Photo ID with no licence?

the snakes are out! How do i know? i was in my friend’s backyard and i saw one in the leaves, and i saw a brown snake in our backyard, about four metres from me! so, look out for snakes in the long grass and bushes, also near the log piles. When you are walking near bushes, clap loudly, make lots of noise. Make sure you have a snake bite kit and have it near you whenever you are in the bush. Keep safe and be aware!

i enjoy reading the Hinterland times and look forward to each issue. Could i suggest a subject for an article please: How can you go about obtaining a photo id card if you don’t drive and don’t have a passport or similar document? it is not a problem for me, although my wife has confronted it quite often. Many older people without driving licences must face this quite regularly, since many businesses and official bodies now demand a photo id for their services.

My mum was diagnosed at 62 with breast cancer, she survived a further 20 years and then lost her battle after being diagnosed in her remaining breast. My sister who is 62 has just, in the last six weeks, undergone a double mastectomy. But i would just like to acknowledge the guys from Maple street Meats in Maleny for making me aware that i need to talk to my brother about him also ensuring that he, like his sisters, is vigilant in checking for signs of this disease that really isn't just a 'woman's disease'. Please lock up! We police tend to harp on about this, but the consistent habit of the community not locking vehicles with garage remotes in them means the offenders are easily entering houses at night via the remotes and taking property, wallets, phones, backpacks etc, car keys then taking cars. recently a triton and an Aurion were stolen from Mountain Creek as the offenders got in via an unlocked window after removing a fly screen. And in another incident, we had offenders again using remotes from unlocked cars, stealing car keys, unlocked garage doors being opened. Can the whole sunshine Coast make one effort before they go to bed tonight to make sure their cars are locked, no valuables in them, put the cars in the garage and lock everything, check that their doors and windows are shut and locked. Skies filled with passion farewell the day, The sun kisses far hills in a sensuous way and Lake Baroon dressed in silver lamé catches the light of the moon. She ripples and turns with teasing delight while the twilight of evening turns day into night, The mountainous backdrop sets a scene for romance and Lake Baroon eases her way into dance. Robinson Stacey Robinson has just celebrated the opening of her new studio in Maleny, so the Hinterland Times decided to learn more about this local artist.

How long have you been an artist? i have been an artist for a long time but have been scared to call myself an "artist"! Age has definitely helped me to be more confident with my art. i have been interested in drawing and painting since i was a child. When i left school i received a part-scholarship to an art school but i wasn't confident to take that artistic leap then. Before starting a family, i spent several years employed as a graphic designer which i loved and i still create digital artwork in Photoshop and illustrator. i’ve always loved nature and when i left school i sold my photos of flowers, interlaced with flower quotes, at markets.

How would you describe the medium you work in and your own style within that? i work in thick acrylics and oils. My main focus is to communicate colour with bold strokes to create energy

and fun. i use paint brushes, palette knives, metal kebab skewers and old business cards to add texture to my work. My work is influenced and inspired by dutch still life artists, impressionism and over-the-top beautiful flowers. What or who inspired you to become an artist? i had a creative childhood with lots of paper and fabric to play with and blessed with a mum that didn't mind a bit of mess! i am lucky because my parents encouraged my creativity and my husband steve is a great supporter of my art. Are you self-taught or did you train? i have taught myself by experimentation in various art areas such as pottery and ceramics, digital art and photography, and painting. What has been your most poignant, memorable or rewarding experience so far? so far my most memorable experience is opening my studio at Maleny. it is a celebration of my art that has taken me a long time with which to feel comfortable. it has been very rewarding as my family and friends have been so supportive. How long does it take you to plan and create a work? the time it takes to create my artwork varies greatly. sometimes i can sit down and produce a piece in two hours; other times it takes over 20 hours. it depends on how complex the piece is. Art is amazing because sometimes i like a painting done spontaneously more than one i have sat at for days! Do you have any advice for aspiring artists? i am quite shy and it has taken me a long time to have the confidence to show people my art. i think it is easier to be brave as i get older and not worry so much about what other people think because art is subjective and not everyone will love your artwork. The Ryan Giles Band are a fourpiece explosion of funk, soul, reggae and hip hop, based on the Sunshine Coast. Time to reflect Brooke smith, together with her father Gregg Nowell, currently has paintings on display at the reflection Gallery, Montville Uniting Church. Brooke’s sister, Haylee Freudigmann, is also involved with framed presentations of some of her writings. the aim of the gallery is to reflect the artist’s experience with faith in the artwork on display and then to invite viewers to reflect on what they see. sunshine Coast spoken Word (sCsW) was founded by award-winning performance poet and writer, robin Archbold aka Archie, in 2013, and has been involved in sunshine Coast festivals and other events ever since. Being Lucy at Rosetta’s In 2005 writer Dale Lorna Jacobsen stood among dangling cobwebs and collapsing walls of a hut in the Victorian High Country, trying to imagine what it must have been like living in this dim, smoke-blackened place. It had been the home of Lucy Strobridge who lived the life of a recluse until she died in 2001, aged 80. Dale returned home to Maleny, but Lucy’s spirit stayed with her. Ten years of research and writing have produced the novella, Being Lucy. Launching at Rosetta Books by writer and poet, Gay Liddington, Thursday November 15. 5.30 for 6pm. Back in the HighLife Nordic Flux Nordic Flux is the resident dJ at the Crystal Waters Chill sesh and he specialises in chill, downtempo, worldly beats that makes you feel good. Jory Freyee aka Nordic Flux grew up in Crystal Waters and when he moved back to the area he realised there needs to be more things happening for younger people, so he put his dJing skills to good use and created the Crystal Waters Chill sesh. The Humble Gum Tree

UM trees (eucalypt and Corymbia spp.) are the iconic Australian trees. they occur in almost all Australian ecosystems from deserts, to the edges of rainforests, from beach sides to mountain tops, from the tropics to the Australian Alps. Gum trees literally frame the Australian character. there are a few Gums that are small (such as the Plunkett Mallee - eucalyptus curtisii), but the vast majority of Gum’s are big, some very big. the Mountain Ash (eucalyptus regnans) – is the tallest flowering plant in the world, from victoria & tasmania and recorded historically at over 120 metres (the last big ones were cut down to measure...) Closer to home we have Flooded Gums (eucalyptus grandis) & Blackbutt (eucalyptus pilularis) which can grow to over 60m. Gum trees often are Big trees for a “Big Country”, however most of us don’t live in the “Big Country”. Most of us live in small backyards and although Gum trees are a national institution, they might just be too big, for your average backyard. too often Gum trees are planted as a fast growing, windbreak or privacy barrier, close to houses and fences. Within a few years the privacy barrier is gone, as the trees race upwards leaving a bare trunk. Also within a decade or so, there starts a rain of branches,

Ur FAst-PACed lives often don’t seem to allow time to ‘smell the roses’, or the perfumed wildflowers, or to pay attention to the natural pathways on which we may walk, in the bush or the garden. Fascinating and often colourful fungi abound in damp weather but there are also small and equally interesting flowering plants. recent weather conditions seem to have favoured an explosion in some areas of an intriguing plant that looks just like a fungus, hence its name Balanophora fungosa, or Fungus root. it’s a rainforest plant, is supposed to be uncommon, and is a root parasite on nearby plants, not that it seems to affect them. it is usually seen in the leaf litter and can grow to about 8cm high. A ring of tiny white male flowers, which are quite distinctive, form below pale brown female flowers. it definitely does not look like your average flowering plant.

various species of insectivorous sundew, Drosera, can be seen in the coastal heaths, eucalypt forests and on mountains. these low, herbaceous plants have a basal rosette of leaves with sticky hairs designed to trap insects. Flower stems are erect and bear white or pink flowers. there are ground orchids, noticed mostly when they produce their flower stem, and pretty Ladies tresses, Spiranthes sinensis, with pink and white flowers in a spiral up the stem. this one is found amongst grasses in sunny, moist positions. it will grow in lawns but tends to be mown simply because gardeners don’t realise it’s there. it does seem to disappear in winter so try it in pot instead where it will multiply and can be replanted in the garden. An unusual little plant worth trying if you can find one. Murdannia graminea, Grass Lily, is a perennial grass-like herb to 40cm tall

with fleshy roots and attractive pink to purple flowers in summer. once this is established, it will spread itself around but is not invasive. there are many others, so watch where you walk and discover another plant world.

with the associated hazard of heavy sharp bits of timber plummeting earthward in your backyard! then there’s the gum leaves clogging gutters if planted within 20-40 metres of yours (or your neighbour’s house). on the Blackall range two nonlocal gum trees have also been extensively planted and they are Gympie Messmate (eucalyptus cloeziana) & White Gum (eucalyptus dunnii), they grow ridiculously quickly and ridiculously big, due to the higher than average rainfall of the range. so where am i going with this i hear you say? Am i challenging the iconic status of the great Aussie Gum tree, not quiet... just trying to save you a lot of money when it comes tree management, by suggesting you don’t plant gum trees in small backyards and near infrastructure. However, all the attributes that make gum trees bad for the backyard are their greatest assets in the bush and for growing timber. they are fast growing, hardy trees and great habitat for wildlife. they can live for hundreds of years and the hollows that form in the trunk and branches are the ultimate in high rise accommodation for so many of our unique Australian wildlife. they produce some of the finest durable timbers in the world. Just don’t plant them next your hills hoist!

He NGANGKAṟi are the Aboriginal traditional doctors of the central desert and are now making themselves known to the general public. Gifted with the ability to heal with their hands and see the source of illness, these peoples are truly special and unique. the Ngangkaṟi learn from other Ngangkaṟi in their family’s lines. they are taught from the long heritage of traditional healing practices handed down from generation to generation for more than 60,000 years. Most of the healing ‘power’ comes through the hands. “All we have to do is see someone, and we know straight away that they are ill and what is wrong with them, and what will put them to rights,” said Arnie Frank. dr Francesca Panzironi recognised the powerful benefits of the Ngangkaṟi treatments and has been a champion to get recognition for the healers. operating from Adelaide, the Anangu Ngangkari tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation (ANtAC) offers consultations and workshops to all those that wish to know further. Witta local, Katrina Foster, recently attended a weekend workshop and was graced with the presence of three Ngangkaṟi healers, Max Watson, debbie Watson and Margaret Winton, who introduced those attending to their healing methods and herbal preparations. N tHe seCoNd saturday of every month you will find a busy band of volunteers in the kitchen of the Montville village Hall preparing pancakes for the Montville Growers and Makers Market. every market day the kitchen volunteers look out the kitchen windows to admire the beautiful view as the sun rises over Hunchy. Montville village Association (MvA) President, deb davis said, “We aim to build a deck on the eastern side of the hall so that everyone can enjoy this amazing view. david Gole, a market volunteer and respected heritage architect has generously donated his time to design and oversee this project.” the extension will improve disability access to the hall and create an all-weather space for people to share in community activities and functions. the plans will be on display at the next Growers and Makers Market on saturday, November 10. the MvA aim to raise $30,000 to ensure

t tHe tiMe of writing we’ve had about 400mm of rain in a week, with the attendant wild winds, and it feels like the summer storm season is with us again. Go outside and check the trees around your house and see if you think any of them, or their limbs, could hit the building if they fell. if any of them look like that, check around the base of the tree for signs of decay, or any other problems. if it is a limb that looks threatening, check where it attaches to the trunk and see if it looks like a strong union, again with no signs of damage or decay, or weeping, or staining from exudates. i am a tree lover, and i believe that

until they stop being so, trees are an asset to a property, and like most assets, they require looking after. i also believe that trees around your house need to be cared for, and kept in such a way that doesn’t present any risk to property. Alternatively, you could do nothing and just take a punt. the Bumpy Ash, Flindersia schottiana, trees are about to come into flower. these magnificent specimens are one of the iconic tree species of the Maleny plateau. Look out for their masses of creamy white flowers laid on top of their distinctive, slightly layered, relatively open canopy structure.

the wake of recent events it would never pass the pub test. so instead, scott Morrison and his army of spin doctors settled, as always, for the second-best option: authenticity. By this they mean that if the punters see enough of their prime minister going to the footy on saturday and church on sunday, drinking beer in public more often than is strictly necessary and parroting Alan Jones by using the homely colloquialism fair dinkum for dispatchable (which isn’t a real word anyway) when he actually means coal-fired, they will think he’s just one of them, but more successful. this may or may not be a winning strategy; there is considerable evidence that the electorate like to see their leaders as rather more able than their own fallible efforts. But in any case, more than a few voters might see that there is more to political authenticity than simply making chit chat in a hard hat on television. the word authentic actually means reliable, trustworthy, entitled to acceptance and belief; and Morrison’s relentless attempts at ordinariness invite the belief that he is indeed pretty run of the mill. But authenticity requires rather more substance than that, and there is no sign that Morrison is prepared to address the need to include it in his policy prescriptions. His embarrassment at having to admit that yes, he did ask Malcolm turnbull to talk to Joko Widodo in Bali about moving the embassy in israel to Jerusalem – it wasn’t, as he had previously agreed with Jones, an act of deliberate sabotage – was one problem last week, and the one that swamped much of the rest of the political news. But there were others, notably the Forrest Gumpish rejection by the previous education minister, simon Birmingham, of peer-approved research grants because he thought the names would sound funny to the readers of the Murdoch press. i have no idea whether the projects would have produced worthwhile results or not – but nor does Birmingham, who showed no sign of reading beyond the title pages. the whole point of research is not to know in advance, but to find out – and waffle about whether it is in the national interest, by which the government means its own shortterm interest, which is not only premature but absurd. the expert examiners who approved it obviously thought it showed promise, but of course Birmingham, the new minister dan tehan, and presumably Morrison knew better: roll on the culture wars. this is not authenticity but the rankest populism, naked demagoguery of which Jones would be proud. Which leads to the conclusion that what Morrison really means by authenticity is a cynical dumbing down of complex issues in the hope that the public will not analyse them too closely. And obviously climate change is the prime example. Morrison says he accepts that it is real – up to a point. But the point is a firm full stop when it comes to doing anything about it. Morrison has so far resisted the demands of the “stop the

world we want to get off” brigade of denialists in his party room and beyond, who want Australia to walk away from the Paris accord, and presumably abrogate or ignore any international agreements and treaties that the knuckledraggers do not like. But he has studiously refused to acknowledge the concern of the scientists, who insist that action is urgent and drastic if the planet is to remain in anything like the condition we would prefer. Morrison replies that Australia is doing its part, to the extent that we will meet our Paris targets for reducing emissions in a canter. virtually no-one else shares his optimism -- once again the scientists are saying that not only is Australia lagging severely on its current commitments, but they need to be ramped up in the near future. it needs hardly be said that the prospect of that happening under Morrison’s regime is remote to the point of non-existence. But his stubbornness is truly authentic: he knows that what people really want is lower electricity prices, and if they say that climate change is their priority, they are either misguided or lying. Marketing is the art of convincing people that what they really need is whatever you are providing. Which is how Morrison is dealing with the children on Nauru issue. He has let is be known that he is, bit by bit, getting most of them to the mainland, which is receiving wary applause; but he won’t say what happens next – are they to have a swift medical check and be sent back? if not, what happens to their parents? What, if any, are their rights? And given that Peter dutton is utterly intransigent about conceding them anything, what, if any, is the long-term solution? A leader who was truly reliable, trustworthy and entitled to acceptance and belief would at least attempt to answer those questions. Morrison’s response is along the lines of “don’t you worry about that,” echoing another shonky leader who liked to think that he was authentic. this will not be enough in the days that follow. First, we have the victorian election, in which the only New south Welshman the locals ever liked, turnbull, has been punted with one they loathe, Morrison. Watch our Prime Minister authentically avoiding the garden state for the next three weeks. But then there will be the New south Wales poll, which he cannot ignore – the problem is that likely his state colleagues, turnbull and Abbott, won’t either. And if that will not produce sufficient angst, it will lead swiftly towards the big one around May. How much authenticity can we bear? Perhaps ProMo scoMo might gain encouragement from another saying of Jean Giraudoux: only the mediocre are always at their best. At least that sounds as if he has a chance.

The Challenge is back on! the LifeFlight razor Challenge is rACQ LifeFlight’s most gruelling cycling challenge. After bad weather scuppered the event last month, it is back on November 10! this unique challenge originates from a concept called ‘everesting’ which involves cycling repeats of one climb until the accumulated ascents reach 8848 metres – the altitude of Mount everest. the trail stretches 5.3 kilometres, up and down razorback road, Montville/Hunchy and 12 dedicated cyclists are attempting this to raise funds to keep the rACQ LifeFlight helicopters flying. it’s predicted to take approximately 17 to 20 hours to complete. Note from the Mayor Council’s international broadband submarine cable project will be a real winner for our Sunshine Coast community. In recent months, we have made major steps forward with this project which will transform our region and benefit the broader Queensland community. I’m excited about the many opportunities that will flow from the cable which should be in service by mid-2020. The fastest data and telecommunications transmission from Australia to Asia will happen from here on the Sunshine Coast. This will help encourage local businesses to expand, new businesses to establish and new career opportunities to open up for people in the workforce now and for future generations. Council has begun working with local businesses to raise awareness of the opportunities associated with the cable and what they should be considering to enable their business to grow. This project reinforces our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.

These two passionate, local heroes inspired us with the idea that an external board of industry people, deeply connected to the arts, could guide and better serve the development of the creative industries on the Sunshine Coast. The board, with its own charter and independence, can quickly respond to the ever changing arts environment, working with council, the arts sector, the community, investors and all levels of government because we all benefit when creatives in our region bring to life new ways of seeing, thinking and doing.

Maleny Aquatic Centre I would like to pay my respects to Joyce Newton, a very special lady whose life was dedicated to the community and her family. For two decades Joyce championed upgrading the aquatic facility for the Maleny and hinterland communities. When the report comes to council in November, I will asking councillors to support housing the new facility on the Maleny Community Precinct. The precinct is a wonderful place for this asset and I thank the many who have worked tirelessly with Joyce to bring this to fruition. I am sure I speak for many in saying that Joyce will be sadly missed.

Clearing on a road reserve Did you know a permit is required to clear vegetation on road reserves, footpaths and on the nature strip. With the right people doing this work, pedestrian and driver safety is maintained and potential damage to essential services is minimised. When it comes to trees, you’ll need an assessment before any work starts. Contact council, phone 5475 7272, about trees or vegetation on council-managed land of concern.

Dusty road update Council is responsible to maintain all rural roads to a safe standard, but you can partner with council to improve a road that does not carry a lot of traffic, or isn’t a through road, by contributing to the cost of a minimum seal. They have now planted over 28,000 trees, removed many exotic and feral trees and weeds, transforming the property. Where there were empty paddocks, feral vegetation, landslip and erosion, there is now a forest of local species, with erosion and landslip controlled. My congratulations go to the Lake Baroon Catchment Care Management Committee for winning the National Landcare Award for Excellent Sustainable Farm Practices at the National Landcare Conference – the only Queensland winner. What a boost to our region. These locals are part of a network of Sunshine Coast heroes, and without them the Sunshine Coast would not be able to face the challenges of human impact through growth and natural elements.

oW We resPoNd to stressful situations depends on the state of our nervous system and current state of wellbeing. if Wendy Rosenfeldt we have experienced trauma, on going stress and lack of sleep, the slightest event can trigger a reaction. Past experiences get hard-wired into the brain. the more frequently the event took place, the stronger the interneuronal connection. if we have been in an abusive relationship we come to expect that we will be treated that way in the future, this becomes normal to us. the body also holds the impressions of the stress. tears, high blood pressure and excess heat in the body are all physical sensations that can be felt just by recalling a situation in the mind. to fully eliminate the detrimental effects of high stress and trauma we need to work on both the mind and the body. transcendental Meditation does this by providing the experience where the mind goes beyond thinking to experience a silent, restful state of awareness. this inner silence corresponds to the deepest level of the mind, beyond even all the memories and impressions stored in the subconscious. By transcending the limitations of the hard-wired connections in the brain, we experience a peace beyond the repetitious thoughts that dominate our daily awareness. Coming back into the conscious mind after meditation is like coming back into the routines of daily life when you have had a relaxing holiday. You feel refreshed and inspired to make positive changes instead of feeling bound by the day to day grind of life.

during transcendental Meditation the body goes into a state of rest that can be up to twice as deep as deep sleep. this profound rest allows the body to physically release the emotional charge of the stressful occurrences. People find they no longer dissolve into tears when they think or speak about past relationship break ups or family members that have passed away. Anger doesn’t flair up when you are reminded about negative situations that have happened. there is a sense of being able to accept circumstances, make the most of them and move on. When the nervous system is full of stress it is like a rock. if you bang a hammer into a rock it will create a permanent mark, just as some bad news or negative interaction will dominate the mind and create upset every time you think about it. As the stresses in the mind and body are reduced the nervous system becomes like sand, an impression made in the sand can go back to what it was fairly quickly. over time, with regular transcending the nervous system becomes like water, so the stress creates a slight ripple which disappears almost immediately, then eventually the nervous system is like air and is barely disturbed at all by stresses and the impressions caused by day to day life. You can’t control what life brings you but you can create a nervous system that is better able to deal with the ups and downs of life. tress tHAt HAs no constructive outlet or that doesn’t bring about a positive conclusion is different to the type of stress which stretches us a little and makes us stronger in many ways. today we face a chronic type of stress, one which eats away at our wellbeing on many levels. it’s the onslaught of rising costs and never-ending bills, it’s the schedules, the rushing around, the trying to find time to just live and love all the aspects of our lives that we should be able to enjoy and take for granted. it’s the tiredness that robs us of our vitality and enthusiasm, and which seems to create many little chronic health problems that are sometimes difficult to diagnose but which never the less sabotage us. it’s living by the clock that moves our blood flow from our forebrain to the back of our brain and which tightens up our neck and shoulders, as we rush from one thing to another. it’s the struggle to figure out what we should attend to first. All of these fires our nervous system to signal our body to pump us with chemicals that were never designed to flood our body for long periods. We need new strategies to help us move through each day, simple actions which when understood and practiced daily will

help us to cope better on a daily basis. A few actions might include, placing your open hand on your forehead while you take a few gentle soft breaths in and out for about 3 to 5 minutes. this will bring blood flow back to the forehead and away from the flight and fright back of the head. or try taking a few minutes to stop, focus on your breathing, and then count to four as you slowly breathe in, hold your breath to the count of four if it feels comfortable, and then exhale to the count of five or six. stress tightens the breath and puts undue strain on our heart, this simple exercise will restore a sense of calm. Be mindful of your internal dialogue, listen to it and stop talking yourself down. Find a few statements or just simple words that bring you peace and say them to yourself. Words evoke emotions and chemicals and exert a powerful influence on your body and mind. drop your shoulders, soften your tummy, if it’s safe to do so, close your eyes and take a few soft deep breaths. simple practices can make the world of difference. Too Much Sun It is obvious that as summer approaches, many of us will be reaching for our sunglasses. And there is a very good reason. Not only does bright sunlight cause watering of eyes, squinting and excessive blinking, it also contributes greatly to eye damage. Why is this? Yet the stigma surrounding bladder and bowel weakness is such that it is rarely discussed in public. the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is reassuring all Australians that treatment is available. incontinence is one of the most common health conditions affecting Australians, with approximately six million experiencing the condition during their lifetime. Pregnancy and giving birth are the most common causes of incontinence in women, while for men it often occurs as a result of prostate surgery and associated radiation therapy. other causes include stroke or other neurological conditions, diabetes or endocrine diseases, menopause, pelvic surgery and general ageing. APA pelvic health physiotherapist dr irmina Nahon wants to reassure sufferers that help is available, and not to be resigned to it. she said, “incontinence has a significant effect on quality of life, and has both psychological and financial impacts. “Less than one third of people who suffer from incontinence seek appropriate treatment, yet the recovery rate if treated properly is very high.” there is strong evidence to support pelvic floor muscle
